a letter from the president

Dear Parents, Alumni, Students and Friends, The 2013-2014 school year was a tremendous success. Our girls soccer, boys soccer, boys basketball, football, baseball, boys golf all made it to the semi finals of the North Coast Section. Boys basketball and boys golf won NBL titles. Five of our team sports made it to the North Coast Section and several individuals competed in the NCS/CIF Championship series including cross country, swimming, track, badminton, and wrestling. So many life lessons are taught through athletics: discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship to name only a few. While nurturing our program and developing lifelong memories, we, as a board, invite you to participate so that you, too, will have a direct impact on our school through the athletic life of all of our children. I cannot overemphasize how parental involvement is the key to establishing a tradition of successful support provided by the booster club. Over the past year, with strong parent and community support, we have been fortunate to assist Montgomery athletics physically and financially, contributing $116,000, and we thank all those individuals who have donated their time, talents, and resources for our school. By joining the Montgomery Athletic Booster Club, members receive a booster card that gives you entrance to all home non-playoff games and a discount at away games. Our goal is 100% membership and representation of all of our athletes. Membership information can be found at our website: montgomeryvikingsathletics.com. We welcome you to attend one of our monthly meetings held the second Monday of every month, 7pm in the Viking Room. In addition, we are now offering a monthly support program. For a mere $10 per month, you can support the athletic program and assist in providing the best student athletic program possible. On behalf of the Montgomery High School Athletic Booster Club board, we thank you for supporting our efforts in contributing to the success of our student athletes. Have a great 2014–2015 year! The Viking co-ed badminton team had a tremendous season on multiple fronts. How proud Head Coach Mary Lehman must be when her team performs well on the courts and in the classroom. The varsity team posted an overall 16-2 record, good for 2nd place in the North Bay League. The junior varsity team finished with a 17-1 record, so the future looks bright for the Vikings. Numerous Vikings qualified for the North Coast Section play and performed well in the toughest of competition. All North Bay League nominees were: (boys doubles) Anthony Goldstone and Yuxuan Qi, (mixed doubles) Tommy Wikle and

Serena Uppal, and (honorable mention) Dylan Freitas and Jeffry Nambayan. The team’s accomplishments in the classroom were even more impressive. The Vikings were selected to receive the North Coast Section Scholastic Championship Team Award for 2014 with a team GPA of 3.64. This is presented to the top three NCS teams with the highest GPA. For perspective, we are one of three teams out of the 170 schools to receive this honor. Fabulous work, Vikings, for living the true meaning of “student athlete!”

Led by Coach Dean Haskins, the Vikings had another outstanding year. In a tough league and a challenging pre-league schedule, the Vikings finished with an overall 20-9 record. After playing several close games with the NBL Champions, Maria Carrillo, the Vikings settled for a second place finish in both the regular season and the league tournament. Qualifying for the North Coast Section playoffs, the Vikings

made a great playoff run bowing out in the NCS semi-finals to the eventual champion, College Park. The Vikings were well represented on the All-League team with four first-team selections. Those making first team were Jared Noonan, Sam McBeth, Matt Miller and Josh Lenney. Great season, Vikings, and let the tradition continue!

This year’s edition of Viking golf won their fourth consecutive NBL championship and are now on the verge of a dynasty. The Vikings were the only team in the area to move on to the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions. This year’s team was led by NBL Player of the Year, Nick Rogers. Other

first-team, all-NBL selections included Luke McLaughlin and Kousuke Tominaga. With a number of quality young players coming back, Coach Stimack has plenty of firepower to continue the “dynasty.”

We all know that a win/loss record does not always tell the full story, that was the case for this year’s Lady Viking softball team. Their overall record of 9-15 and a North Bay League record of 3-11 is not a reflection of how well the Vikings played. Of the league losses, five were by one run and two of those were in extra innings. Certainly one highlight was coming from behind against Cardinal Newman with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 victory. Despite the losses,

five Lady Vikings were recognized with second-team all-NBL honors. They were: Haily Herrman, JT Arias, Jennifer Warner, Sarah Wikle and Sophia Rowan. The Lady Vikings have several returning players nex t season and are looking forward to making tremendous strides. The team works hard and plays with great enthusiasm, and that is a combination that adds up to success. We look forward to watching the Lady Vikings compete with the best next year.

Head swimming and diving coach, Shelley Kelley, reports she had a wonderful team this year. This year’s team had skill levels from beginners to All-Americans. Both the boys and girls teams finished third in the competitive North Bay League. Numerous school records were set by the group and five swimmers/ divers made it all the way to the North Coast Section Meet. Three of the five qualifying for the NCS Meet made it all the way to the finals. Senior Jenna Bauer completed her wonderful career receiving All-American Finalist honors and being voted

the Press Democrat Female Athlete of the Year! Jenna will be swimming for the University of Arizona next year on scholarship. In addition to being outstanding in the pool, the Vikings were outstanding in the classroom. Over half of the team was recognized as distinguished scholar athletes for their outstanding GPAs. Both top scholar athletes for northern California were Viking swimmers. Receiving top honors were Sean Patrick Kelley and Angelica Nowak . Way to go, Vikings— athletes and scholars!

Enthusiastic head boys tennis coach, Sean Benoit, has much to be proud of with his young Vikings team. The team finished in fourth place in the North Bay League with a 7-7 record. Quite the accomplishment with a young team of only 11 players. Coach Benoit reports that the team had an excellent work ethic and always competed to the best of their ability. The group was

led by Shannon Connell who was selected Honorable Mention All-North Bay League including a fourth-place finish in the NBL Singles Tournament after playing four matches in two days. The outlook is bright and the expectations high for the Vikings as they will return their entire team next season.

Viking co-ed track and field teams had both individual and team success this year. Head coaches Alena Cook and Alan Bursch should take tremendous pride in this year’s team accomplishments. This year’s team fielded the most athletes they have in years. To be successful in track and field, depth is needed, in addition to some individual standouts. The varsity girls record was 3-3-1 and the boys finished 3-4. Junior varsity girls and boys both finished even better with 5-2 records. There

were plenty of individual accomplishments. Montgomery set a new Windsor Relay frosh/soph record in the 400m race. Tori Mollard set the new Montgomery school record for the 300m hurdles. The varsity girls 4x400 relay team won the North Coast Section Redwood Empire title. Also, the varsity boys 4x400 relay finished second at both the NBL and NCS Redwood Empire meets. Great job, Vikings, and continued success!

The Montgomery boys soccer team, under the leadership of Jon Schwann, posted another great season. An overall 18-4-2 record and a league record of 12-1-1 resulted in another North Bay League championship. This record garnered the #1 seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs and the boys advanced to the section finals before losing to Tamalpais High. Team MVP honors went to Chris Ortiz. Evan Martinez was the leading scorer and Offensive Player of the Year and Julio Chavez was the Defensive Player of the Year. All three were selected first-team all-North Bay League along with Martin Macias. Perpetual award winners were Julio Chavez for the Tony DeCosta Memorial Award and Keegan Kinnahan for the Stucky Sportsmanship Award. Great job, Vikings, and continued success!

FOOTBALL What a year of excitement and transition for the Viking football team. With the retirement of legendary coach, Jason Franci, Montgomery athletic director and baseball coach, Dean Haskins took over the helm. Coach Haskins continued the winning culture with an outstanding overall record of 10-3 and a North Bay League record of 5-2. Season highlights included an undefeated preseason, beating rival Cardinal Newman in overtime, a big homecoming victory over Rancho Cotate and a triple-overtime win over Ukiah. Two big playoff wins moved the Vikings into the North Coast Section semi-finals. A tough loss to Casa Grande finally ended the Vikings’ playoff run. First-team all-NBL players included Etienne Ezeff, George Pennington, Henry Stelzner, Logan Francavilla and Justin Perry. Others receiving NBL honors were Anthony Bautista, Justin Eatmon, Cole Larson, Bradon Sackett, Keshawn Walker, Colton Silvers, German Rogue, Bryan Dingus and RJ Flores. After transitioning the Vikings’ coaching staff, Coach Haskins has now handed the reins to new head coach and longtime assistant, Marcelo Bautista. Continued success, Marcelo. And the Viking tradition carries on!

FALL REVIEW

BOYS SOCCER

CROSS COUNTRY There were many exciting moments for the Viking cross country team this fall season as reported by head coach Val Sell . Both individual and team performances highlighted the overall effort. On the boys’ side, Christian Friday was a first-team North Bay League runner. His season also included a second-place finish at the prestigious Yoshanny Rahm Invitational. The most outstanding girl runners included Lauren Ray and Molly Kinahan. The girls’ team had an overall second-place finish in the same Yoshanny Rahm Invitational. The overall team highlight was watching the group come together as a team and the encouragement and support provided to each other. As happens most years, the experienced runners were always there to support and cheer on the beginners. This is the type of spirit always shown by our cross country team.

The girls volleyball team produced another outstanding year, as we have come to expect under the leadership of Head Coach Koy Stewart. The team finished with a tremendous overall record of 23-12 and a North Bay League record of 13-3. This record resulted in a North Coast Section playoff run that ended in a nail-biting, five-set loss to league rival Maria Carrillo. The Lady Vikings had three first-team allNorth Bay League players in Hannah McGary, Violet Johnson and McKenna Laforge. Others receiving all-NBL honors were Alyssa Comb and Katie Kirk. Hannah McGary has signed a Letter of Intent to attend LaSalle University on scholarship. The team only graduated two seniors and had seven underclassmen who contributed heavily to the team’s success this past season. The future looks very bright for the Lady Vikings volleyball team.

GIRLS SOCCER The tradition of success for the Lady Viking soccer team is well documented and this past season was no exception. The Lady Vikings finished the season with an overall record of 19-3 and a North Bay League record of 12-2. In the preseason they beat the nationally ranked Alta High School of Utah 1-0. Their outstanding regular season led to a great North Coast Section playoff run which found them in the NCS finals for the 12th time in the past 13 years. A hard-fought 2-1 loss ended the Lady Vikings’ great season. Top players leading the Lady Vikings were senior Izzie Beal, junior Sarah Iroz and sophomore Taylor Fager. Leading scorer was sophomore Taylor Ziemer who has made a verbal commitment to the number one ranked team in the country, the University of Virginia. Clearly the winning culture will continue under Head Coach Pat McDonald. Great job, Lady Vikes!

GIRLS GOLF One could not judge the success of the Lady Vikings’ golf team only on wins and losses according to Head Coach Chris Giovannini. Their record on the year was a very acceptable 5-7, good for fourth place in the North Bay League. Golf being a competitive game also known for sportsmanship and etiquette, Coach Giovannini reports this year’s team was a big winner. Coaches from around the league routinely commented the Lady Vikings were the hands-down favorite team with which to play. They played honestly, supportively and at a pace that is so appreciated in the world of golf. Thanks for your dedication to Montgomery!

GIRLS TENNIS The Lady Viking Girls Tennis team had a great season under first year girl’s Head Coach, Sean Benoit. The team included a large number of participants with varying levels of experience. This made the contribution of Assistant Coaches Mary Lehman and Marie Meredith invaluable to the growth of the team. The players were enthusiastic, responsible and very hard working. Highlights included very competitive matches with Maria Carrillo, Santa Rosa and Cardinal Newman. The final result was an 8-6 record and 4th place finish in the North Bay League. Individual honors included a Consolation Championship in the NBL Singles for Alexandra Wood who defeated her teammate Sami Eberhart in the finals. Delany Seymour placed fifth in the NBL Singles overall. Delaney teamed with Sami to place 3rd overall out of 16 teams in the NBL Doubles. Great job ladies and special thanks to Coach Benoit who also is our Boys Tennis Coach.

cheerleading 28

The Viking cheerleaders just might be the unsung heroes of the Montgomery athletic program. This hard-working squad supported all 17 Viking teams in some form. They performed at all football, boys and girls basketball games and supported other teams in some meaningful way. They cheered at a home wrestling match, supported the Soccer Breast Cancer Night Game and provided motivational gifts to all other teams. In addition to attending sporting events, the cheerleaders perform at a number of other important school events. These events include the Montgomery Education Foundation Crab Feed and the boosters’ annual dinner dance. The cheerleaders are the main sponsors of the homecoming dance and the Mr. Viking contest which directly supports multiple community non-profit groups.

In the competitive arena, the Viking cheerleaders are nothing short of top notch! They participated in three regional competitions and actually qualified for three national competitions. They chose to participate in the nationals at Disneyland and put on an outstanding performance for their first trip to nationals. They also swept both the drill team and grand sweepstakes at this past year’s Rose Parade. This is an enthusiastic group that works as hard as any athletes on campus. They additionally perform in the classroom with an overall GPA over 3.0 including multiple girls with GPAs over 4.0. Thanks for all your hard work and we are truly appreciative of all your support! Go Vikes!
