Omar Davila
For anyone who has played high school sports, what could have been, what should have been is usually a sign that something didn’t go as planned. How many times have coaches lamented over the player who had all the potential, but was missing a key ingredient that kept him from reaching his potential? Maybe if they had worked harder in practice, the off-season, or studied just a little more or partied just a little less. For most high school athletes who fall into this category, they have a lifetime to think about it. Of course many athletes don’t think about it, because in the end, high school sports isn’t life or death, just a game, but Omar Davila isn’t like most athletes. During the 2010 NCS Tournament, Omar Davila, a freshman for Healdsburg, got in the game during a blowout loss to a talented Salesian team. The 6'3" freshman was lean and raw, but athletic and strong. Coach Travis Taylor could see he had a passion for the game, was coachable, and just as important, he loved to compete. Everyone on the Healdsburg coaching staff had high hopes for Omar over the next three seasons. After making great strides during the summer, fall conditioning and open gyms, Omar sprained his ankle a couple of weeks before varsity practice was to begin. Although he was ready to go for the first practice, he was understandably out of shape and rusty. Then Omar missed a few practices and showed up late for another. Coach Taylor didn’t waste any time and dropped Omar down to JV until he could prove that he was dedicated, committed and understood what they expected of him. Unlike many high school athletes who feel they are entitled based on talent alone, Omar didn’t sulk or pout; he got the message loud and clear. He went down to JV and was completely focused. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, 2010, he was brought back up to varsity. The day before Thanksgiving was not a grueling practice. The team had just finished a drill, when Coach Taylor looked over and caught site of Omar. His eyes slowly rolled to the back of his head and his body hit the floor. All California state high school coaches are trained in CPR, but nobody expects to put it to use, especially on a healthy 15-year-old player. But that

is what Coach Taylor had to do and he did it well. 9-1-1 was called and, with the help of Ray Sterling, a stepfather of a JV player, they kept his heart pumping until the Healdsburg Fire Department arrived a short three minutes later, followed by Bell’s Ambulance Service. He was rushed to Healdsburg Hospital and eventually air lifted to Oakland Children’s Hospital. This turned out to be a winning combination for Omar. Omar spent three weeks at Oakland Children’s Hospital recovering from the heart attack. Remarkably, less than two weeks after his heart stopped beating, Omar was able to give the Greyhounds a meaningful pre-game speech over the phone from his hospital bed. A few more weeks passed, and Omar was back on the bench in street clothes supporting his team. Today, Omar is living in Mexico with his family. He talks to Coach Taylor on a regular basis and although he can no longer play basketball, he still has a passion for the game and wants to become a coach. “What could have been or what should have been;” for Omar as a player, we will never know. For coach Taylor, Ray Sterling, the paramedics and the hospital staff at Healdsburg and Oakland Children’s Hospital, Omar has something more valuable—a “what could be and a what will be.”

I never really thought about if basketball was my sport or not. I made my first basket when I was five years old, and ever since my love for the game has grown.
Best advice a coach ever gave you? “Worry about the things we can control.” I still struggle with that sometimes.
What is your coach’s signature line when things aren’t going well in practice or a game? “Not going hard on defense is showing you don’t care. Prove to me that you care.” Or “Winning is the great deodorant.” Or “Come on, 22." to me specifically. Sil has a lot.
Growing up, who was your favorite high school player?
Do you have a superstition? Before every basketball game, I sit down and dribble behind my legs as fast as I can for ten minutes to get my handle ready for the game. I put my left sock on before my right, then my left shoe on before right. Then my teammates and I sing Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and we do a synchronized clap routine.
If i were a coach… I would have awesome gear, but more importantly I would be motivational and be a lot like my coaches are now, except I would play with my team in practices because I don't like watching for too long.

Donald Making a Difference One Game At A Time
As the Elsie Allen women’s varsity basketball coach, Donald Peoples has never won a section or league title; however, the positive impact Coach Peoples has on current and former players makes his contributions to the local high school basketball scene something special.
TO: How long have you been coaching basketball? DP: About ten years.
TO: How did you get into coaching?
DP: I have experience in basketball instruction and player development. Back in the day I was a pretty good player myself. One day, my children told me that their elementary school couldn’t find a coach. So I said, “Why not?”
TO: What do you do when you are not coaching?
DP: I work for the San Francisco Fire Department as a firefighter. I love to spend time with my family and grandson. My hobbies: sports photography and computers.
TO: Who has been the most influential person in your coaching career?
DP: My AAU and Park Recreation coach Gliden Mayfield. He taught his players that setting goals with high expectations and working hard on the court can be fun. He was always applying the lesson of competition to our personal lives. “Never say never” was one of his favorite quotes.
TO: Are you coaching both JV and varsity?
DP: I coach varsity and am the assistant junior varsity coach.
TO: How do you define a successful season?
DP: For me it’s more than just wins and losses. We need players who want to compete, are willing to work hard, keep good grades and commit to the team without quitting midseason if things get tough. It’s the “struggle of playing” that I love about the game.
TO: You have done a nice job getting more players to come out for team. Has that been easy, and how did you do it?
Photo: shaw kobre
DP: It’s hard because we are competing with other high schools for players. You just have to work with what you have. Some students who attend our school think they can’t play at the next level because of their lack of basketball experience or they find other interests in their lives. We try to insure them that, as long as they are willing to commit, learn, work hard and have fun, they can become a better player and student.

PEOPLES TO: How many years of experience playing basketball do the majority of your players have?
DP: Most of our athletes played some basketball for three to four years in middle school and in high school. We also have players on our teams with limited or no basketball experience.
TO: How important do you think high school sports are for these kids, even though most may never play another sport after high school?
DP: Playing high school sports builds confidence, discipline, trust and leadership qualities. Lessons learned on the playing field can be applied to their work habits and personal relationships. Playing sports adds structure to their lives and keeps them out of trouble. They know they can count on their coaches, teachers and teammates if they are in need of help.
TO: Is there one player that you coached, past or present, that you feel epitomizes the positive influence of high school athletics?
DP: My daughter, Ashley. She worked hard on the court and in the classroom. After a long day of practice she stayed up late because she knew that her school work had to be done. She was a leader on and off the floor, and her teammates knew they could count on her. Ashley was a four-year varsity scholar athlete, and at only 5'4", led our team in scoring and rebounding in her senior year. She graduated from Sonoma State in May, 2011 and has joined AmeriCorps to volunteer to help others.
TO: Best piece of advice a coach ever gave you?
DP: Always keep learning. Keep an open mind. Don’t be afraid of being critiqued or criticized. And most importantly the kids are your number one priority.
TO: Where did you play basketball growing up?
DP: I played basketball in San Francisco with the Boy’s Club and San Francisco Park and Rec Department. I also played some high school ball at Lincoln High School.
TO: If you could, what changes would you like to see made in high school basketball?
DP: Being able to start tryouts and practices earlier in the school year. Starting practices in November doesn’t allow us enough time to prepare our teams for league.

Girls’ Outlook 2012 While there is no clear-cut favorite, the usual suspects, Montgomery, Maria Carrillo, Santa Rosa and Cardinal Newman have the inside track for the NBL Tournament. While Piner, Elsie Allen, Ukiah and Rancho are long shots, they are much improved and look for them to spoil someone’s party near the end of the regular season.

With size and experience, Windsor is the favorite to take the title in 2012, but Analy or Casa Grande are capable of making a run for the SCL crown. While Healdsburg, Sonoma, Petaluma and El Molino will be underdogs to contend for the title, there should be some meaningful games as those four teams play for the final spots in the SCL tournament.

2011 SCL Champion: Analy 2011 SCL Tournament Champion: Casa Grande
Girls’ Outlook 2011 With its experience, Casa is the heavy favorite to win the SCL, and for good reason. They play both sides of the court with a high-scoring offense and a shutdown defense. Just because Casa is the favorite, it doesn't mean the SCL is a pushover. Healdsburg, Sonoma, Analy and Petaluma will battle for the last three remaining spots in the SCL tournament.
