A month of innovation, collaboration, and successes

Our flagship event the HVAC&R Hub gave us the largest gathering of industry leaders in the country. With 5,000+ visitors this proved a fantastic platform to gather and showcase the HVAC&R industry in New Zealand.

It is an exciting time to be in the HVAC&R industry and it was great catching up with people from across New Zealand and continuing existing relationships with suppliers, exhibitors and members. We are already in discussions with XPO for 2024, so save the date - Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th June 2024, Auckland Showgrounds.

Congratulations to CCCANZ for being a finalist in the prestigious RAC Cooling Awards in the category Environmental Collaboration of the Year. The HVAC&R F-Gas Collaboration Project is an important initiative that recognises the significance of partnerships and collaborations in achieving environmental goals and driving innovation in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. It is a remarkable achievement for the New Zealand HVAC&R industry and it highlights the potential of the solution to mitigate F-gas greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain.

The shortage of staff in the HVAC&R industry is indeed a major challenge. It is great to know that both IRHACE and CCCANZ are actively working on projects to address this issue. International research projects on employment and career development in New Zealand, as well as assistance to employment agencies, can make a significant difference in overcoming this shortage.

Congratulations to Chris Arvidson from Canterbury for joining the IRHACE Council as a new board member. Chris will be joining esteemed members Phil Mohan, Mark Meyer, Trent McDonald, Paddy Durham and David Everitt. A special thanks to Mark Meyer for his service as President, and a heartfelt appreciation to Paul Shaw for his dedicated 8-year tenure on the Council.

The Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Competition is also an important event, and it is great to see the regional challenges taking place in July, starting with Auckland on 1st July. Realcold deserves recognition as the main sponsor for this event, and it’s wonderful to know that CCCANZ is also providing funding to support this significant apprentice event.

AN UPDATE TO AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND DESIGN TEMPERATURES

With marine heatwaves, La Nina’s, and the general warming temperatures from climate change in the news NIWA has recently received several enquiries around what changes would be appropriate to design dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures for heating, cooling and ventilation systems across the Nation. In this short note we provide an update to previous tables calculated nearly 30 years ago as well as providing some aid to interpretation.

Aotearoa/New Zealand is a long skinny country with several different climate zones, where Foehn Nor’wester conditions can cause blistering hot summer conditions in eastern parts, contrasting with cold damp alpine conditions at high inland locations to the warm and humid climes of the far north, so it is important to have the correct settings for specific locations to ensure the optimal operation of heating and cooling systems and the comfort of inhabitants.

Note that for the previous 1986-1995 table values were provided to the nearest degree, but the updated table has values rounded to 0.1 degree °C.

Additionally, some observing stations used in 1986-1995 no longer exist, so either data from a new nearby station was used or if no suitable nearby records were available the location was removed, those locations were Ponsonby, Te Teko and Lower Hutt. However, some new locations have been added, i.e., Hicks Bay, Waiouru, and Lincoln Road, Auckland.

The ASHRAE website (http:// ashrae-meteo.info/v2.0/help.php#annual_cooling) is a useful resource. It does have some information for some Aotearoa/New Zealand locations, but uses slightly different periods and thresholds to the NIWA derived tables (e.g., instead of 1%, 2.5%, and 5% for Nov-May, it specifies 0.4% for the whole year, etc.).

Often times HVAC engineers require more detailed information about the temperature and humidity climate for a location and tin these instances psychrometric charts for an appropriate observing site can be generated upon request (see Figure 1)

We are pleased to announce that CCCANZ has been shortlisted in the category “Environmental Collaboration of the Year” for their HVAC&R F-Gas Collaboration Project. This category recognizes the importance of partnerships and collaborations in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector to achieve environmental goals and drive innovation.

The HVAC&R industry faces a major environmental challenge in reducing the global warming impact of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) F-gases, particularly hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). CCCANZ, along with other HVAC&R industry organizations in New Zealand operating under the HVAC&R Centre umbrella, has partnered with the sofware industry to develop a holistic blockchain-centric solution. This solution has the potential to mitigate F-gas greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain.

How to

handle

inflation as a sole trader

Sole traders have had an especially difficult few years as inflation surged.

As inflation began surging in early 2022, sole traders were initially able to offset the effects by changing their clients more. But their ability to keep up was limited: as of March, this year, we appear to have hit a pricing ceiling. Only 28% of sole traders have recently raised their rates, as opposed to the 56% who did last June.

Research from October 2022 shows that sole traders are only spending around half of their week (55%) on actual work the rest gets taken up with things like admin and taxes, finding work and travel.

Freeing up some of this time could mean taking on more projects, or working bigger contracts, resulting in a boost to your bottom line.

Three tips to help lighten the load:

1. Automate everything you can.

2. Claim all the deductions you’re entitled to

3. Take care of your mental health.

ARE THERE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE A TECHNICIAN DOESN’T NEED AN APPROVED FILLER LICENSE?

RLNZ have an answer from Worksafe’s legal team

Who needs an Approved Filler?

RLNZ has been fielding enquiries (generally from the automotive industry) asking if there are circumstances where a technician doesn’t need an Approved Filler License.

“Regulation 15.64 of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 places restrictions on persons who may charge a gas container. It is quite clear that a person directly filling a gas cylinder is required to be an Approved Filler.

Also, a person may fill a cylinder if they are undertaking a course of instruction or other training to become an Approved Filler and they are supervised at all times by an Approved Filler”.

Refrigerant Recovery Units

Refrigerant recovery units are of two general types:

Refrigerant Recovery Unit Worksafe

Units that decant refrigerant gas into a recovery cylinder that is placed on electronic scales, to weighin the refrigerant, and ensure the cylinder is not over filled. The operator needs to know the maximum filled weight for that refrigerant/cylinder combination.

WorkSafe considers that where the recovery cylinder is independent of the recovery unit, the technician is required to be an Approved Filler.

RLNZ recommends sitting the A1 and A2/A2L Approved Filler courses

Refrigerant Recovery Unit Worksafe

Units that decant refrigerant gas into a recovery cylinder that is located inside the unit. The cylinder sits on a load cell, and there are safety mechanisms to prevent an overfill.

WorkSafe considers that where the recovery cylinder is contained within the recovery unit, the technician is not required to be an Approved Filler.

An A1 approved filler license is recommended for R134a refrigerants (non-flammable) and an A2L approved filler license is recommended for the R1234 family of refrigerants (flammables)

FROM THE CHAIR

Greetings

Well, it’s been another big year for the board of directors, with the year starting off with Covid-19 still hanging over how we operate our businesses. The lack of staff is affecting all of our businesses due to the closed border and our struggle to get recognition at MBIE that we should be on the green list for critical services. We must thank Grant Price for trying to get us recognized with his position on the Specialist Trade Contractors Federation (STCF).

We all were struggling with supply issues which was plaguing New Zealand and seriously effecting our businesses. The price increases were never ending, causing fixed price contracts to be less profitable. As we started to manage ourselves around Covid and the border restrictions starting to ease there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Meantime our board meet every two months and had some progress with governance and projects.

Development of the cradle to grave management of refrigerants, mainly F-gases using a business Ethereum Blockchain which incorporates all stages of refrigerant use. A big thanks to SmartTrade business solutions for leading the development of this exciting world leading project.

SmartTrade has developed our CCCANZ Safety Master system into a SmartForm which is being trialed now with the intention of this being available to our members in 2023. We are now looking at a standardised maintenance schedule in a SmartForm with the hope of it being adopted as a minimum standard to help in the mitigation of refrigerant leaks and higher running costs of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. We are doing all this work due to the government requirements for the Product Stewardship Scheme for F-gases. As an association we need to be applying to run the scheme or be part of a team with the best interests of the industry and our staff at the forefront. We wrote to the Ministers Parker and Shaw to have a meeting to raise our concerns on the implications to our members if we don’t have a democratic voice in this scheme.
