IRHACE announces first apprentice to represent New Zealand

It is a significant achievement for Jack Butler to be selected to represent New Zealand in the 47th WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France, on September 10-15 this year. IRHACE has also been invited to compete in the Australian Global Skills Competition in Melbourne in May. This is a simulated international competition and is an important part of Jack’s training plan in the lead-up to the WorldSkills Competition.

Neill Adkins has been appointed as the WorldSkills expert for New Zealand in the refrigeration and air conditioning skillset, and this adds another layer of expertise and support to Jack’s journey. It is a crucial role in the coordination of a training plan for our apprentice and an opportunity to showcase skills on an international level.

The restructuring of the Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Competition and the successful organisation of the new regional challenges are noteworthy accomplishments achieved by members of IRHACE. The upcoming 2024 Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Competition, with regional challenges in July and finals in October, promises to be an exciting event.

Special mention to our new members and those members achieving milestones. It’s always inspiring to see members being acknowledged for their expertise and contributions in their respective fields.

Overall, these achievements reflect positively on the New Zealand HVAC&R industry and highlight the dedication and excellence of IRHACE and its members. Well done to everyone involved!

RCR Green breaks ground on Ashburton Solar Farm

In a momentous step towards sustainable energy, RCR Green has broken ground at their Ashburton Solar Farm

In association with Lightyears Solar, RCR Green – part of Stonewood Group and RCR Infrastructure – has broken ground at their Ashburton Solar Farm which will contribute to the renewable energy landscape near Ashburton, powering approximately 2,500 homes annually and significantly reducing carbon emissions. It will also allow for the continuation of productive agriculture, with sheep able to graze beneath the panels.

The farm will boast a peak capacity of 7.5MW of clean energy and RCR Green and Lightyears Solar are spearheading the development of this already consented solar farm. Lightyears Solar has recently completed a 2.4MW solar farm in Waiuku, Auckland, and have other projects in development.

“The Ashburton Solar Farm represents a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable infrastructure development,” says John Chow, chairman at Stonewood Group. “We are proud to collaborate with Lightyears Solar to bring this solar farm to life.”

Described as just the beginning of Stonewood Group’s commitment to ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) responsibility, the project is a clear commitment to expanding renewable energy through RCR Green.

“Breaking ground on the Ashburton Solar Farm is an exciting moment for RCR Green. This solar farm aligns with our mission to drive positive change through clean energy solutions, and we are eager to see the positive impact it will have on the community,” adds Garry Ko, executive director at RCR Green.

Matt Shanks, development manager at Lightyears Solar, says he’s looking forward to adding to the renewable energy supply in Ashburton, and working with RCR Green: “Our companies share a commitment to finding sustainable solutions, and low-cost, renewable electricity can help address energy poverty, drive economic growth, and help mitigate climate change.”

As well as providing clean energy to the local distribution network, RCR Green and Lightyears Solar are dedicated to fostering positive relationships with immediate neighbours and iwi with an interest in the land, ensuring transparency and collaboration throughout the project.

RCR Green and Lightyears Solar are developing several projects ranging from 15 to 60MW to provide New Zealand with renewable energy. This forward-looking approach aligns with the vision of expanding renewable energy initiatives for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The solar farm venture holds paramount importance in New Zealand’s renewable energy landscape.

Currently, only a handful of solar farms are operational, contributing to the country’s transition towards a greener energy future. Stonewood Group aims to further this impact by developing another 15 solar farms in the coming years, reinforcing New Zealand’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.

The target date for commercial operation of the Ashburton Solar Farm is late 2024. rcrnz.co.nz

HVAC&R apprentice representing New Zealand on the world stage

For the first time, a local apprentice will be representing New Zealand on the world stage in HVAC&R

irhace.org.nz JAN / FEB 2024

A competitor in IRHACE’s annual Wallie Askew Memorial Worldskills Competition, Jack Butler from Active Refrigeration was one of six young apprentices who showcased their skills under the watchful eyes of industry expert judges in the two-day event held at Steelfort, Palmerston North. Now, Jack has qualified to participate in the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in France later this year.

WorldSkills New Zealand is a charitable trust, part of an 86-member country movement that promotes competition across scores of vocational skills: from refrigeration and air conditioning, aircraft maintenance, welding and additive manufacturing, to cooking, cybersecurity, graphic design, renewable energy and more.

“Having an apprentice from the HVAC&R industry represent New Zealand at such a prestigious event is a remarkable achievement. This is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate New Zealand’s skills and capabilities in the HVAC&R sector to an international audience,” says Gina McMaster, CEO of IRHACE and HVAC&R industry associations.

“Being the pioneer apprentice to represent the HVAC&R industry in New Zealand is a huge honour. Jack’s success is undoubtedly a result of immense hard work and dedication from not only himself, but also from his family, mentors, trainers, the workplace providing opportunities, and the experts and companies offering essential training and guidance.”

Carl Rankin, WorldSkills New Zealand general manager, agrees it will be great to see New Zealand’s HVAC&R sector represented on the world stage.

“This is the first time we will be competing in this skill at the international competition and it’s an amazing opportunity in so many ways – to connect with the international HVAC community, to learn and to showcase a pathway for young people.

“Jack will be one of 29 competitors, each representing their country, and all will be aiming to win gold. Jack will be required to have a deep knowledge of all aspects of the skill, from component fabrication and brazing through to electrical fault-finding and everything in between. He will be tested to his absolute limits during the four-day competition,” says Carl.

In the leadup to WorldSkills in September, Jack will also be participating in the Global Skills Challenge held in Melbourne in May. Believed to be the biggest international skills event to be held in Australia this year, it’s an event designed to simulate a WorldSkills International Competition. The event will be held over four days, use the same marking and assessment framework as WorldSkills, and include test projects and materials based on those that will be used in Lyon where possible. Australian CIS Skill Advisors will also be at the competition, if available.

Accompanying Jack will be Neill Adkins, New Zealand’s WorldSkills expert.

If you’d like to support Jack in the WorldSkills International Competition or the Global Skills Challenge, please reach out to learn more about becoming a sponsor.

“Events like these don’t just happen – they require dedicated effort, expertise and passion,” says Carl. For more information about supporting Jack, contact Gina McMaster: eo@irhace.org.nz

Reducing waste with reusable cable ties

Traditionally non-recyclable and made from nylon, cable ties are used across the country in many sectors –usually making their way to landfill when no longer needed. Now, a waste-free solution has been introduced

In collaboration with Auckland Council, Naylor Love carried out a waste trial at its construction site on Auckland University of Technology (AUT) North Campus. The trial involved separation of resources on-site and making changes to how Naylor Love used and disposed of its leftover building products and materials.

At the end of the trial period, over 90 percent of Naylor Love’s construction waste had been diverted away from landfill – allowing the company to make a saving of 40 percent on their usual landfill costs.

The sheer amount of cable ties thrown away each day by each trade’s personnel was an eye-opener during the study.

“Everybody uses them for all sorts of applications,” says Annie Day, group environmental manager at Naylor Love. “Once we knew the extent of the issue, with 13.5kg of cable ties collected during the foundation build stage, I went online to search for an alternative and came across reusable cable ties. I bought a pack being sold on Trade Me for an outrageous cost and showed them to our team. We shared a ‘wow’ moment – then the hard work started.”

Understanding the issue and finding a solution

One of the first steps Naylor Love took was creating an accessible onsite sorting area where waste materials could be separated – then providing different bins for different materials, with signage consistent with WasteMINZ guidelines so people would understand which bins to use.

irhace.org.nz JAN / FEB 2024

After auditing the building products and materials they were using, Naylor Love saw that there were multiple actions they could take to divert resources away from landfill. They found that some products and materials could be easily sorted on site, while others could not. They also saw an opportunity to work much more closely with suppliers to reduce, reuse and recycle their products and materials to divert them from landfill.

Swapping single-use cable ties with a reusable product had the potential to divert an entire category of non-recyclable waste away from landfill – but would people be willing to use reusable cable ties?

“First, we had to get the reusable cable ties retailed in New Zealand,” says Annie. “This was a long process – I started talking to one prominent retailer in January 2022, and it took them a long time to ethically source them.”

Approvals were also needed from the project design teams, and challenges around the definition of a cable tie were also noted.

“I’m talking to Masterspec to see if they can write a specification for cable ties. There is nothing in the architecture and services specs that say what kind of cable tie to use. If we have clarity on this, it makes the decision easier to choose reusable ones.”

And Annie says progress is being made: “I’m happy to report that since we have been promoting the use of reusable cable ties, other companies have started to use them – including scaffolding, electrical and carpentry.”

A step forward

There are now retailers either stocking or looking to stock the reusable cable ties, and Annie’s team have found a recycling company that will take plastic 6.6 – the nylon plastic used for cable ties.

“They are in development mode at present, trialing the 13.5kg bag of cable ties we collected from our AUT site. It could be a good solution for non-reusable cable ties we remove during refurbishments and demolitions.”

Annie’s advice for other companies looking to use reusable cable ties?

“Make the switch now. Use them for all the temporary works, do them up – unfasten them – do them up again. Save on buying new cable ties, save on waste to landfill. Be a positive change, role model for your company from the top down or bottom up, and influence in between.

“Take a look at what you do every day and question whether there is a better way to look after the materials, complete the tasks or use a different approach altogether.

“Sometimes it’s the little things that have a big impact –in this case, a small, incidental piece of single-use plastic that costs next to nothing.”

Where can you purchase reusable cable ties?

• GFC Fasteners

• Powerpac

• Discount Office

• Marine Deals

• StarTech

• Mega Mitre 10 will soon be a stockist.

Choose the right trade event: why HVAC&R Hub is right for you

Showcasing the latest advancements in heating, cooling and air quality control technologies, HVAC&R Hub is returning in June

Finding the right trade event is essential. If the area of interest it covers is too specialist or too broad, it is unlikely to attract visitors who want to buy what you have to sell. This is why IRHACE created the HVAC&R Hub – taking place at Auckland Showgrounds on June 25-26.

HVAC&R plays a pivotal role in New Zealand’s building, construction and design domains, making it the perfect fit to be positioned at the heart of BuildNZ.

Last year, over 5,000 industry visitors attended BuildNZ. This year, that number is expected to rise even higher with the event taking place alongside BuildNZ, Facilities Integrate and The National Safety Show.

“Trade events of this calibre are powerful face-to-face platforms, allowing companies to amplify their brand, expand their network, increase sales, stay competitive, launch new products, secure trade deals and discover news suppliers while fostering professional development,” says Lorraine Smith, head of trade sales at XPO Exhibitions.

In 2023, the HVAC&R Hub welcomed 221 exhibitors and 1,477 exhibiting staff – providing plenty of networking opportunities. Of the 5,000+ visiting industry professionals, 88 percent attended to see new products and source new suppliers.

“HVAC&R Hub offers unmatched opportunities for members to connect with decision-makers, establish B2B relationships and generate leads that would likely not have emerged without their participation in this industry trade event,” says Gina McMaster, CEO of IRHACE and HVAC&R industry associations.

What else should you know?

• In the lead-up to an exhibition, it is worthwhile to invest in your staff so that they can answer queries and show your company in the best light.

• If you’d like to exhibit at HVAC&R Hub, low-cost options are available so that you can get in front of 5,000+ visitors, network with other exhibitors and talk one-on-one with potential customers.

HVAC&R Hub is set to be the largest event for the HVAC&R industry in 2024. Get in quick to book your exhibition stand. Contact us at admin@irhace.org.nz

NETWORKING

Engage in meaningful interactions with a diverse audience of industry professionals. From potential clients, distributors and partners, exhibitions such as HVAC&R Hub put you in direct contact with key decision-makers.

A solution to the big issues: FMANZ calls for a minister of the built environment

FMANZ highlights the important contribution the sector can make in achieving New Zealand’s global emissions goals

Holding the solutions of a better, healthier and more resilient Aotearoa, facilities managers provide answers and actions on the greatest issues facing the nation. This is why, late last year, the Facilities Management Association of New Zealand (FMANZ) called on prime minister Christopher Luxon of the New Zealand National Party for the creation of a new cabinet-level portfolio for a minister of the build environment.

“This new ministerial role would focus exclusively on making the most of our existing buildings – rather than building new ones,” explains FMANZ CEO Jo Duggan in her open letter to the prime minister.

It’s proposed that the new minister could take the reins on vital projects – from overseeing an increase in the longevity of assets, saving the country billions of dollars, to improving and mandating levels of indoor air quality, which could have significant health impacts and lead to improved productivity. The new minister could ensure urban areas play a part in a predator-free Aotearoa, and drive energy efficiency deep into our built environment –slashing bills and carbon pollution.

“A ministerial role such as this would significantly benefit the economy, our businesses and every person in New Zealand, and show New Zealanders that our new government recognises the significant importance and value of our built environment,” says Jo.

“As an AASA member of ASHRAE, IRHACE supports this initiative to remind governments of the importance of the building industry to our global emissions challenge,” says Phil Mohan, IRHACE president.

In Jo’s words, “we are the often-unsung heroes who work behind the scenes of our airports, hospitals, banks, office blocks, museums, universities, laboratories, shopping malls, urban parks, government buildings, etc., to ensure everything is running as it should be for the productivity and wellbeing of everyone using that space.”

The importance of Continuing Professional Development

There are plenty of opportunities for Continuing Professional Development, but it’s important to first understand why it matters and why it exists in our industry

Why is Continued Professional Development (CPD) important and why does it exist?

It’s important to not fall behind in your knowledge and skills – not only does it show your current and potential employers that you are a keen and dedicated individual who wants to progress and better themselves at every opportunity, it also ensures you stay up-to-date with current industry trends and best practices.

As the world’s industries are forever evolving – including HVAC&R – exciting and new opportunities are always being created, but this also naturally comes with challenges. CPD allows you to regularly apply focus and attention to important areas of your own development – providing a framework to take appropriate action to reduce any shortfalls in knowledge.

By investing in your continued education, the currency of your knowledge and skills won’t become outdated.

“As more people become professionally qualified with similar qualifications, CPD becomes more important as a means of separating yourself from the pack. For example, it can give you the opportunity to differentiate yourself at moments where this may be required, such as job interviews or proposals for new work,” says Gina McMaster, CEO of IRHACE and HVAC&R industry associations.

Continued professional development exists to ensure that an individual enhances their skills and abilities once they have formally qualified. Typically, academic qualifications may have already been completed at this stage and an individual is now working within their specific industry and job function.

CPD is important as it helps to ensure that further learning is progressed in a structured, practical, and relevant way to guarantee that there are applied efficiencies to the learning. For the individual, it means they can focus on the specific skills and knowledge that they require over a short-term period, in order to be confident there is recognisable improvement within their proficiency and skill sets.

TAP A PROFESSIONAL ON THE SHOULDER

If you can talk to your colleague or friend and get them to join IRHACE, we will reward you with a $20 e-voucher.

Help us strengthen our membership by attracting your peers!

Making the most of your CPD

It is important to manage your professional development with ease and efficiency.

“For the HVAC&R industry, we have our CPD programme which provides a wide range of CPD-earning activities to ensure that you can choose the best mix of activities to meet your personal development goals. These include webinars, online courses, face-to-face courses, technical tours and events,” says Gina.

“Being an IRHACE member gives you access to the programme. Your progress through the various activities is tracked and there is an overall leaderboard showing which members are the most active. Every time you complete a CPD activity, you are provided with a CPD certificate and we can assist you with a full report of your activities.”

There is an increased need for CPD points as compliance grows across the HVAC&R industry, such as IQP, PSA and upcoming licensing. Joining IRHACE gives you access to the CPD programme as part of your membership, allowing you to:

• Maintain pace with other candidates in your field.

• Remain up-to-date with changing trends.

• Stay interested in what you do.

• Be part of boosting workforce motivation and loyalty.

• Develop your skills while you continue to work.

CPD for employers

While it is up to the individual to complete CPD – which often comes within the context of their membership and involvement with industry professional bodies or institutes – more and more employers are taking a proactive role in supporting their employees with CPD as they see the benefits of a more motivated, highly-skilled and committed workforce.

There is a common misunderstanding with some employers that CPD takes significant time which may result in periods of ‘out of the business’. However, the availability of more flexible CPD suited for the HVAC&R industry, available from IRHACE, can provide CPD learning seminars alongside new business revenue and networking opportunities.

“For the HVAC&R industry, we have our CPD programme which provides a wide range of CPD-earning activities to ensure that you can choose the best mix of activities to meet your personal development goals. These include webinars, online courses, face-to-face courses, technical tours and events”

Technical site visit for IRHACE members

A technical site visit was organised in the Southern region taking place at the Belfast site of Silver Fern Farms.

Silver Fern Farms were gracious enough recently to let us take a tour through both the old and new ammonia engine rooms at their Belfast site. Around a dozen people attended, from contractors to suppliers, and, along with the site’s shift and project engineers, we were shown through the recently decommissioned engine room and the brand-new purpose-built replacement.

All attendees and the SFF staff enjoyed pizza and soft drinks at the end of the visit and enjoyed themselves immensely. Our thanks to the staff at Silver Fern Farms who accompanied us and provided so many insights into the plant operation.

Silver Fern Farms, Belfast

Silver Fern Farms were gracious enough to let IRHACE members take a tour through both the old and new ammonia engine rooms at their Belfast site

irhace.org.nz JAN / FEB 2024

Ammonia refrigeration systems are made to last decades, and this is certainly the case with the old engine room here.

The original building was constructed before 1885 and is still standing, although it will be demolished in due course. It was being used up until the new plant was commissioned and pipework cut over to the new engine room in October/November 2023. There have been a number of changes over the literal centuries as the plant upgraded from the steam Hercules water-cooled compressors to the multiple belt compressors in place today. The compressors in the room today all date from approximately the 1960s and 1970s and were showing it.

Silver Fern determined the need for a new engine room some years ago and embarked on the design and construction in 2021 with the entire construction process taking almost two years. The project involved two ammonia refrigeration subcontractors with the refrigeration works split between the heat pump

installation and main refrigeration systems, along with many consultants and project engineering companies. Thousands of man-hours were expended in design, review, LUME modelling, and construction.

Like many others, this pumped ammonia system and vessels are limited to an MT and LT pot. The swing compressors swing between high and high-high-pressure discharge lines to provide the source for the heat pump, which is already drastically reducing the heating costs for the site. New SCADA systems replace the older manual valve actuations with time savings for operational changes going from 40 minutes to the flick of a button.

Perhaps the most significant item in this plant, however, is the lack of a cooling tower. On-site water storage and usage means that all the HOR of the plant can be discharged into the site’s consumables, removing the need for towers and the maintenance requirements they need.

FROM THE CHAIR

Business owners, heads up! There are new laws and potential tax changes with the change in government that you should be aware of.

90-day trial periods (from Dec 23, 2023): Now available for all employers which gives you confidence when hiring new employees. A trial period must be agreed to by the employer and the employee in writing, and in good faith, before the employee starts work, as part of their employment agreement. The extension of 90-day trials will not affect other aspects of employment relations, such as the requirement to act in good faith, or worker protections regarding pay, conditions, leave, and health and safety.

Fair Pay agreements (from Dec 20, 2023): Gone for now. If your organisation currently holds any personal information collected for the purpose of the Fair Pay Agreement activities, including bargaining, it must now be disposed of in line with the privacy laws. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner explains how you can do this. Read more here, https://lnkd.in/gwBYDK-M
