Straight teeth, crooked social construct Jessica Perez Staff Reporter The treacherous and dreadful thing we know as braces have saved the teeth of many people throughout the world. The end result may be fantastic, but the whole process of having braces is very expensive and painful. Braces cost thousands of dollars only to be a never ending cycle of pain. They are worth it, but when you spend weeks of your life wallowing in pain you start to question it. Braces are basically a curse from hell that bring weeks of pain once a month to your mouth, and there’s nothing worse than mouth pain. When you first get them it doesn’t hurt, then a few hours later it feels like you are being stabbed several times in your gums. When you go to put wax on to help with the pain, it honestly doesn’t even work, the little wax pieces just get stuck to your brackets. Good luck with getting that off! Every visit to the orthodontist after getting your braces on is basically the same:

you go in, they give you a thicker wire, stab your mouth with the wire on “accident” a few times, then change your band color if you have one. Since they give you a thicker wire almost every visit, your teeth never adjust to the heaviness of any of the wires and your teeth are constantly sore. “What I hate most about braces is that food gets stuck in the brackets and you can’t eat with

the bands in, and if you do they snap,” senior Jocelyn Pitlik said. The absolute worst thing about braces is that whatever you put in your mouth, stays in your mouth. If you have mac and cheese for lunch, you best believe that mac and cheese isn’t going anywhere until you go home and brush. So the rest of the day you struggle not to smile in fear you might have mac and

cheese in your brackets. Braces are also extremely time consuming. You have to go once a month to the orthodontist and when you go to the regular dentist you’re there all day. First to the orthodontist to get your wire off, then to get your cleaning, then you have to go back to the orthodontist to get your wire back on. Another thing that’s crummy about braces, is if you eat something hard or too sticky, they break. In my life, I have broken approximately seven brackets. They are pretty easy to break. If you break one you have to go through torture to get it glued back on. Then you have to add on the payment of the broken one to the thousands of dollars you are already paying. That’s another few hundred dollars down the drain. The braces cycle never ends. You get a permanent retainer and you get a removable one that you have to wear for the rest of your life, and if you don’t wear it your teeth will shift. If you have the option of either getting braces or jumping off a bridge, pick the bridge.

“Heart breaker” mindset ruins relationship value Jude Hanno Staff Reporter

Falling in love is inevitable. We all crave someone to tell us they adore us. Someone to make us feel like magic. Someone we can share ourselves with. Whose smile can give us an infinite amount of butterflies. When that is found, you cling on and crave their affection. They are constantly in your thoughts and running through your mind. Their absence makes you hazy and their love makes you feel like flying. You have fallen in love and although that is inevitable, so is the fear of potentially getting heartbroken. As teenagers, high school sweethearts may last forever, but the probability of someone spending the rest of their lives with

someone they met in high school is just not common. Getting your heart broken as a high schooler is much more likely. This is where the idea of being a heartbreaker comes up. The idea that it is okay to hurt another individual. To take pride in the fact that someone loved you enough to let you impact their emotions in a crazy negative way. How can a single person be okay with the fact that they have inflicted emotional harm on another individual? The entire idea of being a heartbreaker really appealed to me when I was a sophomore. “In every relationship, pain is inevitable,” I used to tell myself. “If you don’t break hearts, you’ll only get yours broken.” Now that I have experienced both hurting someone and getting my heart broken, it’s evident that the mindset I was accustomed to was ludicrous. Relationships should not be a game. There should not be a superior in them. Treating other people like toys is harmful. Not only is it hurting them, but it’s hurting the heartbreaker too. That sense of power someone is given when they have control over another person’s emotions may seem like harmless fun, but it is only causing them to be mean, bitter, and straight up fake. When you love someone, show it. But when you don’t, don’t pretend you do! On the other side of the spectrum, some heartbreak really is required. People lose feelings. People get bored and tired and that is okay. People fall out of love all the time. It’s the fact that some people pride themselves on how many hearts they’ve broken. It’s the idea that “I got my heart broken so now it’s my turn to do it.” Everyone is going to get hurt, just don’t be cool with artwork, opinions and comments. hurting others. What is the point of lying and cheating someone who loves and cares for you? The issue is that people like feeling in control. When someone breaks your heart, you aren’t in control of a single thing, not even your emotions. I see so many girls finding rebounds and then just leading on a group of boys for the thrill of feeling in control. Hurting others is never cool. Being okay with causing another human pain is never cool. No matter how many times you are hurt, and no matter how many times others have caused you pain, that is never a justification for hurting another human. If you hurt someone from your past, don’t leave that there. Make amends. Any sane and sympathetic human being would let the ones they hurt know how apologetic they are for the pain they inflicted.

Society favors masculinity over femininity De’Ja Heard Staff Reporter Cameron Fairchild Staff Reporter

Gender equality is a hot topic in America. The Bill of Rights states that all men are created equal, which is correct, all MEN are created equal. Women, on the other hand, are subject to a battery of sexual discrimination and harassment. Society likes to pretend the goals of feminism have been answered and that men and women are equal, but women are still faced with ingrained societal prejudices. First fact: Men don’t like being turned down by women, and if women refrain from being docile creatures and reject a man, that makes them a prude. Second fact: If a woman doesn’t reject a man, and then goes on to not reject many more men, she is called a slut, because of course men are never anything but monogamous, saintly creatures. Third fact: Women are still paid less than men for comparable skill sets and similar jobs. Fourth fact: Women are commonly portrayed as sexual objects in mass media, modeling, movies, and music. Hip-hop, GTA and Adam Sandler movies are chief perpetrators of this imbalance but it worms

its way into other forms of entertainment subtly. Fifth fact: If you ask most women if they’re a feminist, they’ll say no, because “feminism” has morphed into “women who

hate men,” which is about the most ludicrous assessment of a human rights movement that has ever been offered. In fact, 23 percent of students at Riverside don’t know what feminism even is.

Don’t believe me? Just look up “the menimist” on Twitter, a page dedicated to shaming women for embracing either their sexuality or basic free will while arguing that women discriminate against men. Sixth fact: If a society has a lengthy history of discrimination towards a particular gender that has been in place since its inception, it is not in any way comparable to the harsh words of a few women who don’t want to be approached by creepy dudes. “I think [feminism] is a great cause, but a lot of people are wrong about the idea of what it is,” junior Diana Ross Rarang said. “[It’s not] girls thinking they’re better than guys. Gender equality is for both sexes.” The general consensus in America is that we have reached an equal, fair, and balanced society for all men and women. Seventh fact: Incorrect. Women have been an incessantly discriminated-against group, and as 1/2 of the population of human beings on Earth, that’s a pretty significant group. Americans and the world at large need to figure out that it is not okay to treat anyone with less respect than any other human they share the planet with. Women deserve respect, and societal prejudice needs to end to accomplish that.

Eating disorders and body-shaming: real issues Sara Koenig Staff Reporter “Real men like curves, only dogs go for bones.” “Eat a cheeseburger.” “Thunderthighs.” It’s called body-shaming and it comes in all sizes and walks of life, just like the people they’re judging. It’s the age-old dilemma: society can’t see past appearances. People judge people for height, weight, piercings and tattoos, body hair, scars, birthmarks and stretch marks, and any number of other things. The clothes I wear, how I do my make-up, whether I shave or self-harm, the choices I can and can’t make about my appearance are everyone else’s business. I am open to everyone’s judgment. I call BS. Whether you have big boobs, big butts, neither or both, whether you’re short or tall, whether you shave every other day or every other week or never, whether you have piercings and tattoos, whether you wear makeup, no one has any right to judge you. And yet, no matter how much we hear about body-shaming, no one makes a move to stop it. And no one makes a move to show younger generations that how their bod-

ies look doesn’t decide who they are and shouldn’t decide how people look at them. And you shouldn’t judge others for the very same reasons. Here’s a reality check for everyone: one in four seven-year-old girls have tried to lose weight according to fatgirlphd. com. One third of young boys aged 8-12 are dieting to lose weight. Even more shocking? Recent studies show that in 2007-’08 there were 1,718 children and teens hospitalized for eating disorders; in 2011-12 it had increased to 6,500. Four hundred and forty-three of those children are under age 13. In other words, our society is making our children sick. In almost all cases, eating disorders were caused by body-shaming in some form or another. So, in almost all cases, hospitalization and sometimes death could have been prevented. So, to everyone out there, don’t let people judge a book by its cover. If people don’t want to learn how to read then ignore their illiteracy because I think you’re perfect. No matter how you look.

Vape life: making haze on values Have you ever used a vape pen or E-cig? 57% Yes 43% No

If you haven’t, will you ever? 42% No

58% Yes ILLUSTRATION BY MACKENZIE BROWN

Jude Hanno Staff Reporter Jesse Eisenbacher Staff Reporter The human race is naturally accustomed to following the crowd. From what we wear to what we do, the topics that never fail to spark our interests are those that are the most prevalent and popular. Although this universal herding can at times be completely harmless (such as fashion and pop music), trends can also have the power to impact a person’s life negatively. From following the Kylie Jenner lip challenge to the milk jug challenge, sometimes teens do things that are not the smartest decisions. Today’s current trend sweeping Washington State is the harmful and addictive use of electric cigarettes. Also known as e-cigs and not too different from vapes, this addiction-driven substance is continually and effectively influencing the youth of our state and needs to be regulated. Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices filled with liquid nicotine that is dissolved in a solution of water to create a vapor type smoke. These devices are most widely used by society to quit smoking or to

create a healthy smoking habit. Its purpose was primarily to revolutionize the way of smoking. It’s exactly like it, but way safer for addicts. Although that is true, E-cigs are an incredibly dangerous trend not too different from the cigarette infatuation in the 1950s. These E-cigs contain nicotine that can be fatal to a child’s body. Although that statement sounds like common sense, it has not stopped the usage rates in high school students to increase rapidly. According to the Health Youth survey, the jump is frightening. In just the past two short years, teenagers in 12 grade using electric cigarettes rose up from virtually nothing to a little more than a fifth. This dramatic jump should signify how important future regulation should be. Thankfully, Washington’s laws are pushing to require child-safe packaging on all E-cig products, as well as prohibiting their sale on the internet in order to reduce their accessibility to minors. Although this bill will guarantee making children safer, many people still stand in opposition. Due to the bill also raising taxes on items, store owners claim that it could cause their businesses to shut down. The is-

sue with only thinking about a self-serving business is viewing of that as a priority is morally corrupt. The safety of the future generations trumps the selfish interests of those who believe selling harmful addictive drugs is more important. According to sophomore Brianna Martinez, people who vape in general “are stupid. E-cigs are made to get people off of cigarettes. But instead people are using them just to look cool.” Martinez will never try E-cigs and does not think smoking at all is really worth it. Senior Kaja Johnson believes that it is everyones own personal choice on whether or not to use them. She has never tried them, but she “could someday if she gets the chance to.” I personally believe that an E-cig is gross and that it smells like death, but I do think that this is a safer, less-nasty, version of smoking. I also think that it helps many smokers quit their addiction of cigarettes which is great! The down side is that kids around the age of 11 are buying E-cigarettes online or through a source and smoking them before they are even the legal age of eighteen. What I’m saying is that if these were

just a tiny bit harder to get your hands on, then more kids would be living a healthier lifestyle and have fewer risks for their life in the future. Some might argue that teenagers using E-cigs as opposed to actual cigarettes is just a lesser of two evils. Although cigarettes do contain more toxins, that argument is not a justification for keeping E-cigs so easily accessible. E-cigs are still harmful. They contain nicotine which, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, is “just as addictive as cocaine and heroin.” It is unsafe, and can start bad habits in people whose brains and bodies are still developing. WebMD stated that the withdrawal symptoms that may occur are “feeling irritable, restless, depressed, and anxious.” As though being teenagers with our emotions all over the place wasn’t enough! Imagine wanting to quit this habit after a while. It will just be torture! Starting it is pointless for us on it’s own, it needs to be regulated so that people can make better life choices. The new bill should continue to be pushed until it is made law. E-cigs and vapes need to be better regulated to keep our children safe.

Emoji update embodies diversity, complexity Deja Heard Staff Reporter Over spring break, the iPhone update iOS 8.3 changed the emoji game, the face of Twitter, Instagram, all faces of social media, and literally, it changed the faces of it’s emojis. The new emoji update includes all skin tones for emoji people and a new layout for finding emojis. The news was all over Twitter praising the iPhone update Gods for the best creation ever made. Now, Snapchat stories are filled with all colors and there are more options for Instragram captions. By far, the best thing about this update were the different races represented in the media for the first time. Many ethnic groups were proud that they made it to the top of the emoji food chain. The emoji game is so wild that many changed their whole people emoji to their skin color. But as we all know, with a set of pros there are a set of cons. Even though the emoji people skin color can be changed, the family, best friend, and the boyfriend and girlfriend emoji skin color can’t be changed. They stay this ugly golden yellowish color that is too horrible to use. Apparently, the people are yellow now because that’s the generic color for emojis, like how all the emotion faces are yellow. It’s still weird though, because now the regular people look like they’re from The Simpsons or like they’re actually made of gold. Also, there aren’t really any new emojis added to list, other than a couple new flags, some new gadgets, and some same-sex families, which sucks because every time there is some new trend on Twitter or some popular pop culture reference, everyone comes up with hundreds of emojis to use, none of which are ever actually taken into consideration. Because we definitely need 13 moon emojis but not one

single taco... The one thing that really pisses me off about the new emoji update is that it takes a crazy long time to find the emoji that you need. For example, when a student who hadn’t seen the new update was given an iPhone with iOS 8.3, it took them on average 20 seconds to find basic emojis. I could write an entire paragraph in 20 seconds... The fix to this is simple: emliminate all irrelevant emojis (which would be about half of them). Things in the emoji world have started to become so complicated, that it would almost be better if people could return to 2008 and start using the first ever emoticons :) :( :P and most importantly <3. Androids have it figured out by

using “Mike the Android” as the star of their emojis, saving its users from the complications of racial representation. The organization of the update is actually really nice compared to the old system. Every emoji is separated under one of eight different categories. You can also just swipe through the entire set under one tab, which is probably actually faster than trying to decipher what each category is and which one contains your desired emoji. This update is controversial because it has so many pros and cons. For some, it’s worth the switch. Others stick with the iOS 8.2 update, and for them, emojis they don’t have just show up as little alien faces.

Diversity acceptance instigates cultural invasion Aaron Baker Staff Reporter

Make no mistake, Cinco de Mayo celebrations do occur. However, it’s not as if Saint Paul, Minnesota is a well-known cultural melting pot.

In an age when accepting cultural diversity has become the latest fads, needless celebration of holidays considered novel by the ethnic majority is now seen as fashionable. Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated by the white American demographic, but the streets of Mexico are, in fact, as quiet as usual on May 5. Cinco de Mayo was originally designated a national Mexican holiday in 1862. Many Mexicans and Mexican-Americans today view it as a source of pride, as its original meaning was to celebrate the unlikely Mexican victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla. Despite its roots, Cinco de Mayo is no longer celebrated as a national holiday in Mexico. In fact, most of the celebration that commences does so within the United States. Diversification of culture is

never a negative act. Nay, recognition of other cultures is what makes us an intelligent society. However, there must be a line drawn between recognition of culture and attributing an arbitrary, obsolete holiday to a culture that doesn’t even recognize the holiday itself. Cinco de Mayo has essentially added itself to the long list of excuses for Americans to party. All other meaning has been long lost. Opposition to celebration is silly, of course, but if we must celebrate, we should at least admit that we’re only doing so for the sake of celebrating. It’s almost as if celebration itself has become taboo. Sure, the typical American party may not consist entirely of family friendly activities, but must we mask our insecurity about our own actions behind a Mexican tradition? In essence, we’re using Mexico as an excuse to exercise our inability, or rather unwillingness, to remain sober for more than a month. Our society has become such that we must have an airtight excuse for every “sin” we commit as determined by some ethical code that we all seem to have adopted. Mexico, it seems, is the perfect scapegoat for any crime, even if the crime is excessive celebration. In any event, it’s not as if Cinco de Mayo celebration will (or should) disappear completely, but we owe it to ourselves as a society to celebrate it for what it truly is, and to fully understand the holiday.

Advanced Placement tests create flurry for preparation Alyssa Ferry Staff Reporter The end of the school year is slowly creeping up on us, and for students, that means testing. Advanced Placement tests started taking place yesterday, and continue through May 15. These tests are taken in the portables. Each test costs approximately $60. Students have high hopes for their scores. “I’m testing in Chemistry and AP Human Geography,” freshman James Lear said. “I think I’ll do pretty well actually.” Students have mixed feelings about the test as a whole. On one hand, some students feel extremely prepared for the upcoming test. “I’m confident that I’ll do really well on my AP Human Geography test,” freshman Jalen Forward said. Studying is a key aspect to doing well on any test, especially a test that gives you an opportunity for a college credit. “I use the prep books and go over notes, and I use flashcards,” Forward said. Everyone seems to be looking forward to next year’s classes, and challenging themselves once more, especially because of how highly colleges think of students with AP

classes on their schedule. “I’m taking AP Physics and AP Euro as a sophomore,” Lear said. Taking this test is not required, but most students take it to avoid failing the in-class final. By taking the AP test, the grade you have in class stays the same. However, by taking the in-class final and not testing for the college credit, your final determines your end grade. Students are using this to their advantage. “I’m actually paying to fail [the AP test], instead of failing the inclass final and failing the entire class,” sophomore Billie Hieronymous said. The cost for testing is a fair amount, but students who qualify for a discount only have to pay the low cost of 10 dollars. As testing comes and goes, there are high hopes for all students and their test scores.

As the school year comes to a close, the ASB welcomes new executive board members. The elections were held on Friday, April 3. The next ASB executive board for the school year of 2015-2016 consists of President Kasaiya Alaalatoa, Vice President Aso Atafua, Secretary Isabelle Creighton and Treasurer Chelsea Shearer. There were also four interviewed positions on the executive board. Those were Spirit Chair Mackenzie Deshler, Junior LASC Garrett Miller, AV Tech Jared Garalde. Alaalatoa has big plans for next year, most of which

follow the common theme of uniting the Auburn school district. “I think my biggest goal is uniting the Auburn schools,” Alaalatoa said. “I want to plan something called ‘A-day’,” I’ve gotten inspiration from ‘K-day’ which is [something] the Kent schools have done every year so far. They have all the Kent schools come together for a leadership conference there and the main goal is to unite all of the Kent schools to one shared goal, so this year it was ‘choose love’ and I think I really want to do the same thing, so my biggest goal for the next school year is to unite West Auburn, Auburn Mountainview, Auburn High and Auburn Riverside together.” As for the current year, there are also some upcoming fundraisers, such as pancake breakfasts for Invest-Ed. As in previous years, ASB members will be flipping pancakes and entertaining the crowds. All of the funds raised will go to Invest-Ed, which helps pay for school supplies and other necessities that some students can’t afford. The “Hitting for Haiti” volleyball tournament has been moved to some time after May 5. Anyone can sign up and join, there will be a competitive tournament and a casual one. Sasha Terry Staff Reporter This year’s Prom will take place at the EMP in Seattle, as it has in previous years. The theme this year will be “The Great Gatsby.” Prom will be held on Saturday May 9. It will begin at 8:00 p.m. and end at 11:00 p.m. Students are required to show up with a ticket and an student I.D. to enter the dance. Anyone bringing a non-Riverside student must submit a guest pass to the activities office, due by this Friday. Auditions for the Prom song “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran took place on April 15 and senior Ryan Smart was chosen from those auditions to sing the song. At first, Smart didn’t intend on auditioning for the song, but later decided to try out because he had practiced singing the song before. He is excited to sing the song in front of everyone and he hopes that everyone will like it. “I love the song! I have been tweaking the song and making it sound a little different,” Smart said. “I will be playing the guitar too.” Senior Daisha Campbell and the seniors in ASB are working with Sue Neu to organize Prom to create an amazing night. “We have prepared for Prom by working with the EMP and with photographers. We used ideas from students,” Campbell said. Prom nominations for king and queen occurred this week and the results of the voting will be announced on the night of Prom. There will be a spirit week for the seniors that leads up to Prom on Saturday. The cost for the dance is $40 per ticket and all funds raised will go towards the senior class budget.

There are hundreds of useless college classes in the world, but only a few are so useless that they are hilarious.

Harry Potter: Literary Tradition & Pop Culture At Otis College of Art and Design you can study J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series in close examination. Don’t take this class unless you’re a full-scale Potterhead because you would need to be truly crazed.

Philosophy and Star Trek At Georgetown University students are given the excuse to watch Star Trek all period and earn credits for it. Sounds good as long as you like Star Trek. Count me out please!

The Art of Walking You literally study walking. While walking in OTHER countries. Umm, yes please. Guess I’m going to Centre College in Kentucky for this easy A with bonus travel perks.

Underwater Basket Weaving Believe it or not this class is offered at two rather lazy colleges. University of San Diego, and Reed College in Portland, Oregon. May shows awareness for unknown disease Alyssa Ferry Staff Reporter Imagine being stuck in an endless cycle of checking food labels for every item you want to eat, preparing your own dishes, and being in a constant state of fright due to not knowing what may happen if you mess up. It seems like just any other allergy, and in most ways it is; however, living with diseases such as Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) takes this and multiplies it. “Eosinophil is a type of white blood cell associated with allergies, parasites, and cancers,” the American partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders said. The fact of the matter is that since so few people have these diseases, research is limited. In fact, the disease wasn’t recognized until very recently. In diseases such as EoE, an excessive amount of Eosinophils in areas other than the blood and intestine cause issues. This makes the body see food as a parasite or enemy and attacks it. EoE is an allergic reaction just like any other, but the effect is longer lasting and greatly detrimental to the health of sufferers. Seasonal allergies affect the nose, while asthma affects the lungs, and EoE affects the esophagus. Sufferers of EoE have intense difficulty swallowing. Depending on their allergies and how long they have gone without a diagnosis, people with EoE live with these symptoms their entire life. There is no known cure. Eliminating the “Top 8” is very common for sufferers to do. The Top 8 is a list of the most common food allergens. Including, wheat, eggs, milk, nuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, and

shellfish. However those suffering from EoE may not have an allergen on this list, they can be allergic to anything. According to APFED.org, the third week of May is designated for awareness for Eosinophilic related diseases. It is signified by the acronym EDUCATE. “E” stands for Educate (Sunday), and would like for people to “post facts about eosinophil-associated diseases to social media pages.” “D” stands for Donate (Monday), this day APFED would like for people to “make a personal donation to APFED and encourage others to match it.” “U” stands for Unite (Tuesday). Sufferers and supporters are wanted to “Join or start a local support group.” “C” stands for Change (Wednesday). This is a day to “Change the way others view your disease by sharing your story.” “A” stands for Awareness (Thursday). Since magenta is the color to represent Eosinophilic related diseases, supporters are encouraged to “Wear a magenta-colored T-shirt to school or work and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same.” “T” stands for Thank (Friday). This is a day to “Thank healthcare providers for their support and care.” “E” stands for Engage (Saturday), and this is a day to “invite family, friends, and others to experience dietary limitations (Suggestion: Eat Like Us for a Day Challenge).” For those suffering with EoE, this week is important to raise awareness. Sufferers will deal with this disease for a lifetime, and the more people who are aware, the more funding will go to research.

Kinsey Miller Staff Reporter Spring Break is a chance for high school students to take a relaxing break away from school. Some kids take the opportunity to catch up on their homework or to study. Most take the week off and lounge around. According to senior Jamillia Lopez, spring break is a time to keep busy. “I went to the tulip festival, UW, and on a band tour to different colleges in Washington,” Lopez said. The Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon has been a favorite pastime for many students this year. “All the flowers were bloomed. Mother’s Day Great Gift Ideas

We’ve once again reached that special time of year when we celebrate mothers for all they do to help us succeed. Mother’s Day is taken very seriously by many students at school, as they wish to honor their matriarchs with the utmost respect. “I definitely celebrate Mother’s Day,” said freshman Katie Ruppert, “When my mother is sleeping, we normally go downstairs and make her breakfast, to let her eat breakfast in bed. Then we give her cards and usually just do whatever she wants to do for the day.” Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world in many different forms. The American incarnation of the holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. It became recognized as a national holiday by 2014. The history of Mother’s Day can be traced back to an early Christian tradition regarding Lent; however, it has since become a secular holiday meant to honor our mothers. The commercialization of Mother’s Day has been widely adapted into the mainstream celebration of the holiday, thus gift giving is a common ritual in practice. “I’ll probably get [my mother] a gift card for a pedicure, or something along those lines,” said Ruppert, citing her ideas for gifts. “She really appreciates that kind of stuff.” For those with less of a plan, we’ve created a list of great presents for the occasion.

SAT Tests Mackenzie Brown Editor-in-Chief While many things determine what colleges a student might attend after high school graduation, most of what counts is the work of four years. Most, being all except the SAT. The SAT is one test, one chance. You can study, but the content will change and there is little you can do to change the outcome of your score. These choices, although few, could add hundreds to your score, or take that same amount off of your potential. Sleep is probably the most important factor. It isn’t necessarily getting enough, it’s getting however much you need for maximum functioning. Everyone varies and some students know that they think the best while running on four hours. Oversleeping might require a little waking up. On top of that, whether you sleep or don’t sleep, you have to have snacks. Oranges, goldfish crackers, granola bars. If you bring enough to share, you’ll make a lot of friends during the test. One extra tip to add is to make the experience as comfortable as possible. When students have to take the SAT in the gym, bring a chair. A padded folding chair will be a grand investment. It weighs about five pounds and the chairs that students have to use during the test are terribly uncomfortable and squeak with every movement. Everyone will tell you to study for the SAT, but no one ever says how. There are a lot of ways to study and many people have published strategy books on what to do and how to do it. These books are cool, but no book will get you as prepared as the College Board book itself. The big blue book contains answer choosing strategies and tips on how to succeed. Most importantly, it has practice tests. You can practice certain sections, or the whole test all together, and even score yourself. It’s the best way to practice, because it gives the best idea on what to actually expect on the test. For students who lack all motivation whatsoever to study for something as bland as the SAT, get the SAT Up app. It’s $10 a month, but it’s really only needed for the couple of months before the test. It has vocab to study, practice questions, and it gives you an overall score with areas that need improvement. Not to mention it makes studying really quick and really efficient. Any free time can be spent studying. Not everyone needs to study. Sometimes, the best plan is to establish a goal for colleges you plan on applying to, take the test to get that goal, and if you don’t meet it, study and take it again. “I didn’t do any SAT prep and I did really well, but I wouldn’t recommend that for everyone,” senior Nico Soerink said. In the end, no one can establish how well you do except you. Preparing yourself, even the tiniest amount, will really improve your testing performance.

Pike Place Market Pike Place Market is a well known tourist attraction in Seattle. Pike Place Market is most known for the fish market because the workers throw the fish when there’s an order. It’s pretty exciting watching them throw the fish around and yelling. Every other time I had gone, I had never seen them drop a fish, but this time they did. I was so shocked to actually see them drop one. That was a rare thing to see. What I love about Pike Place is that there is usually someone playing live music by the fish market. This time I went, there were two people. One guy playing a saxophone, and another downstairs playing his guitar. My favorite was the guy downstairs because he played all original songs. A fun and must see thing at the market is Rachel the pig. She’s located next to the fish market. She’s fun to take pictures with. You can sit on her and pose like you’re riding her into battle. Overall, Pike Place Market is a great place to go. It may be loud but it’s pretty entertaining to see all the things going on at once.

Space Needle The Space Needle is the most popular attraction in Seattle, since that’s basically what Seattle is known for. I went up to the top and they took my picture and I chose to buy it. It was a nice memory for my first time going up. The Space Needle has an amazing view of Seattle; you can see everything perfectly from up there. The Skycity restaurant is up there too. I didn’t get the pleasure of eating there because it was closed, but my mother went later and said it was fantastic. The gift shop downstairs was really nice too. I bought a keychain and picked up the picture they took upstairs. The picture came out really nice! My overall experience at the Space Needle was great. I had a great time and got a chance to finally go up after 16 years of

Woodland Park Zoo Woodland Park Zoo is a great place to take your family or friends. They have lots of animals and exhibits to see, such as the African Village. The African Village includes two huts and a school. The school lets you see out to where the zebras were located. The animals were so cute and excited to see visitors. My favorite animal to watch was the meerkats. They were so funny and would run around everywhere, and stand on rocks and pose for people’s pictures. Woodland Park Zoo offers various activities for the whole family. They have face painting for the little ones, and a bug exhibit. They also have great food and snacks at stands around the zoo. Woodland Park Zoo is a great place in Seattle to take your family for a nice day out.

Ferris Wheel The Ferris Wheel in Seattle is one of the most known attractions to not only tourists but the people of the city as well. The Great Wheel was built in late June of 2012. This attraction is perfect for nice days in Seattle, date nights, school trips or for tourists the perfect opportunity to see the entire city from your tiny air-conditioned compartment. Prices range depending on where you fall withing their age group. Those who are 12 and older pay $13, and younger children cost $8.50. The Great Wheel also offers a VIP experience, which includes a compartment with a glass floor to it along with a look that not all the other compartents have. So if you have the chance to go and experience the Great Wheel, you will not regret it.

Unfriended causes viewers to log-off Karlee Johnson Staff Reporter In the movie Unfriended, cyberbullying is taken to a whole other level. Six friends gather on a group chat, while the seventh person is someone unknown. Little do they know that that person is in fact “Laura Barns,” who is haunting the friends from the dead. Laura Barns committed suicide because of a video that was posted online; she was being harassed until she could take no more. The purpose of the movie is to see who really posted the video, so they play a game to eliminate those who have done the worst things in life. The first person out is the

first person to die. Eventually all the secrets of these teenagers come out one after the other and the group starts to turn against each other. This serves to be Laura’s exact intentions. There had to be someone who wasn’t Laura Barns behind the web cam, because she had died before any of the things these kids had done. Who knew their secrets? I guess we’ll never know. Even though this movie was popular and everyone wanted to see it, I have no kind words at all for this movie. The entire movie was exactly the same thing as the previews, nothing new. Personally, I did not enjoy that the movie was entirely online. There could have been some change up to where they had a

Ex Machina crudely oiled Cameron Fairchild Staff Reporter If you give it a quick onceover, writer-director Alex Garland’s Ex Machina has all the right parts for a classic locked-room sci-fi thriller, a la Alien: a claustrophobic setting, a suspicious, reclusive genius/possible psychopath at its center, and an unlikely bond between man and machine. The movie follows Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson) as he is sequestered in his boss’ research facility to test the capabilities of a secret AI project known as Ava (Alicia Vikander). Ex Machina begins promisingly. But this potential is wasted as its engine grinds slowly. Ex Machina is slow. Ex Machina is almost all set up, and is organized as such until its breakneck (and yet still too long) finale. As the kind of movie it tries to emulate, Ex Machina is a pale imitation. The movie is trapped between wanting to be Her and Alien simultaneously; though the ending is jarring, and exciting, it’s also unearned by what comes before it, and a prime example of how hining a movie on a plot twist ultimately works to its disadvantage. Contrast between naturalistic shots and mechanical interiors becomes obvious, and mirrors reflecting the AI Ava does the same. The film feels very patterned and predictable. Though the film tries to hide this behind nuanced performances, it even falls flat there. Science fiction does not demand good acting, but when Garland tries to write his characters as more than just plot devices his

cast stumbles. Gleeson tries far to little as the everyman tester; Oscar Isaac, his obviously-villainous boss, tries far too hard. The saving grace of the film comes from Vikander, playing the mysterious and innocent Ava with both tranquility and understated anguish at the confines of her laboratory cage. Ex Machina doesn’t really work the way it should. An imbalance of plot and one-dimensional characters bog down what could have been an interesting and intense sci-fi sleeper hit.

brief section outside of the chat room. For literally only an hour you are watching six teenagers argue over a webcam. At some point it just got to be really annoying. The movie itself was really overrated. It was made out to be something really good,

and it ended up being something that I regretted spending money on. If you plan on seeing this movie, don’t. It was a waste of time and money and I would not recommend seeing Unfriended.

If you’re reading this listen up Deja Heard Staff Reporter Drake dropped a surprise rap album this year titled If Youre Reading This Its Too Late following his release of Nothing Was the Same. The song track crafted social media videos, and funny “if youre reading this” pictures, and photo captions. The first song on the album, “Legend,” sets the tone of the album as a whole, seeing the liveliness and calm moments of the song that you feel through the song. Showing his creativity makes you want to keep listening. The first three songs create a chill vibe: just lie back and paint your nails, or do homework. The best song on the album is “Know Yourself,” that starts off chill, but then the beat cuts off for four seconds and then he yells “I was running through the six with my WOES.” The song gets really crazy and turnt.

Naturally, the album blends really well together. All the songs have very catchy hooks that stays in your head. The beat of the album is great. When you put on headphones the bass really pops out. Drake’s flows are really different from his other albums, they’re more real and hard. You can hear all of his pain, hear his frustration, and emotion in every song connecting with the beat of song. Many of his songs are emotional but filled with anger, and love. In the songs “Star67” and “Jungle” you can really hear his emotions. They really stand out. What makes the song even more emotional is his singing. On the album, Drake features rapper Travi$ Scott, singer and writer and songwriter of PARTYNEXTDOOR, and famous rapper Lil Wayne. Travi$ Scott brings a chill, and different sound to the album. PARTYNEXTDOOR is on two songs on

the album: “Preach,” a very turned up song that’s upbeat, and “Wednesday Night Interlude,” super mysterious and romantic. These songs on the album show the loving “caught in your feelings,” and “thinking about your ex” moments. Overall, the album is filled with creativity, romance, and most of all a great jamming vibe. The album has its own sound, and a differnt vibe

from the rest of his album’s. Drake’s album changed the year of 2015 for the best. I give this album 10 out of 10.

5 Best Songs on the Album:

• “Know Yourself” • “Energy” • “Wednesday Night Interlude” • “Madonna” • “You and the 6”

Marina and The Diamonds gets a bit Froot-y Jude Hanno Staff Reporter Marina Diamandis, professionally known as Marina and the Diamonds, is out with another best-selling album titled Froot. At number 8 on the US Billboard charts, this album featured a campaign called “Froot of the Month” before its release, where Diamandis released a new song every month in anticipation for the album. Although this campaign only lasted five months, avid fans like me were bursting with anticipation over the final release. My favorite song on the album Froot is “Happy.” The lyrics speak to me because it speaks of searching for happiness within yourself to have it be true and consistent. When you look for outwardly reasons to be happy, you’ll put your happiness and emotions into something else’s hands and that won’t help you find real happiness. It’s about finding out how to be happy on your own. That has been a huge struggle for me throughout high school and can tell that it is relatable among a majority of people. In an interview with Larry Day from The Line of Best Fit magazine, Marina stated that she “used to think being depressed was part of my personality or that I was born like that, but it’s quite shocking to realize that perhaps that isn’t the case.” She uses “Happy” to describe how she feels she has grown and excelled from her past album of Electra Heart. I also adore the song “Weeds” because no other heartbreak song has ever hit me as much as this one has. The lyrics speak of being unable to get rid of someone you used to love. About how their presence is con-

stantly plaguing you, exactly like a weed. It applies so much because all you hear when you are heartbroken is about how it is going to get better, and I think Marina is able to recognize that sometimes it doesn’t, you just miss those who are gone. A whole lot more than you should. Time may not actually heal all wounds. Marina identifies this entire album as her true identity, while her old albums were not who she truly was. She stated that her past album, Electra Heart, “wasn’t true to who I was as a person, or how I felt like who I wanted to be, but when you’re not happy with yourself like that, it’s very hard to show it, and it’s very hard to change your behaviors.” Froot is who she believes she truly is, because it was written to show how she is now at ease with herself. Although Diamandis believes Froot follows her own personal identity, I would have to say I don’t favor this album over Electra Heart at all. That album made me fall in love with her and how unique her message is. I obsessed over every song on that album, but there were a few songs on Froot that I just did not like. One of those songs is “Gold.” It’s not catchy and when I had the album on repeat, I would always find myself skipping it. Besides that one song, there aren’t many other songs I completely detest, but when I’m in a Marina mood, I usually still go straight for Electra Heart. I would recommend Froot to people who really already like Marina, because it’s more of her identity album. But for those who are curious to find out who she is and listen to truly great music, I would recommend Electra Heart above all.

GTA V exceeds expectations after rocky start Dylan Johnston Staff Reporter “Cousin! Let’s go bowling!” It has been two long years of listening to that cursed line, just waiting for this day to come. As of April 13, GTA V came out on PC. There have been petitions, riots, and arguments on Reddit, the whole nine yards. All of that will finally end today, and the next day, and the next day. This game is seriously amazing, one of the best single player experiences I have ever had in my life. The story is rich and full of drama, humor, and action. A story where the player actually cares for the characters in the game. I constantly felt bad for Michael when he got his day turned upside down by some sort of disaster. Or when Franklin got pushed around by everyone, even though he was working harder than the rest of the team. I would have to say that my favorite character is Trevor, he is the atypical white trailer trash bank robbing psycho. Almost every line that Trevor says in the game is hilarious. One of the big bonuses to playing games on PC is the modding community. In GTA IV there were a ton of graphic

enhancing and gameplay enhancing mods. Sadly, Rockstar North has prevented any and all mods from allowance on the PC version. Until further notice, there won’t be any mods for quite some time. However there is a way to make UGC (user generated content) in the game. One of the most recent updates to GTA online were the heists. The heists become available to the player once they reach rank

12, and own a high-end apartment. Upon reaching this Lester will contact the player saying he has some new jobs if they are ready. This update was really needed for the long term integrity of the game. Heists add a completely new perspective to the game. All of the heists can be done solo; however, it is extremely hard and is recommended to get a team of four people for maximum efficiency. Rockstar was supposed to include

has had at least a single redeeming moment, be it a single chuckle or a particularly meaningful theme or scene. The only emotional moment of the movie was when the credits rolled, and I found myself inexplicably weeping, just as the survivor of a near death experience would. Much of the film featured outdated slang, aerial shots of Las Vegas that contributed nothing to the plot, and scenes completely incongruent with the storyline including, but not limited to, attacking a

large bird of prey for no reason at all. I cannot stress this enough: there was actually no point to this scene whatsoever. Hence, we have Andy Fickman. I love the cinema and the theater, I have a great appreciation for dramatic arts, but I actually wish I could erase this movie from my memory entirely.

heists two years ago when the game released. While the story and graphics of this game are beautiful, the game on launch date, not so much. Over 75 percent of the people who pre-ordered/pre-loaded the game could not even play it when it released. It was extremely hard to launch the game, let alone install it. Did I mention that it was a 60 gigabyte download? But wait, it doesn’t stop there. Once the game finished installing it required an additional 40gb of space just to unpack and decrypt the game. Once you get past the seven gates of hell, the game itself runs amazing on PC, and the difference between this version and the console is immense. On April 19 there was a patch that fixed most of the bugs that have prevented people from playing the game. However, it still doesn’t make it okay for Rockstar to release a game with bugs that prevented people from playing the game on day one. Overall, this game is definitely worth $60. It has improved graphics, first person mode, and even more content to the online version of the game. I would highly recommend this game to anyone.

Kevin James blarts on modern cinema

Aaron Baker Staff Reporter There are no words foul enough to describe Andy Fickman’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Paul Blart (Kevin James) served as a vessel for fat shaming humor, which apparently passes as wit in modern day America. With no coherent plot, cookie-cutter characters and hordes of humor that barely treads the line of ‘innocuous’ and ‘worthless,’ the biggest surprise of the whole experience was my super-human ability to retain my lunch. The plot is completely indescribable. It seems the gist is that Paul Blart goes on an ill-advised boondoggle to Las Vegas, terrorists kidnap his daughter, because apparently there are no job qualifications required for a screenwriter, and everything turns out okay in the end. Fickman’s attempt at weaving zany antics into the plot failed so miserably that I can only assume he put a concerted effort into making the movie unwatchable. With a critic score of four percent on the film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, perhaps I should have seen a bad experience coming long in advance. Prior to this, every film I’ve ever seen

“One-footed wonder” excels, inspires Karlee Johnson Staff Reporter We call him the “One-footed wonder,” but there is no mystery behind the success of this determined athlete. Senior Tye Dutcher was in a tragic lawn-mowing accident that took his right foot. The story of how it happened is one that he will never forget. An 11-year-old boy who had dreams of being in the military made a choice that would soon change his entire world in a matter of seconds. “I wanted to be sneaky, and go up behind my dad to shoot him with a wooden rubber band gun like I’ve done before,” Duthcer said. Dutcher’s dad did not see him as he put the mower in reverse. Feeling the bump, Dutcher’s dad soon realized that it was his son that he had crushed. Lifting the mower off of Tye, in protective mode, Dutcher’s dad told him not to look. “I was 11 years old, of course I’m going to look.,” Dutcher said. “All I remember was my foot being gone. I didn’t see the blood like everyone else.” After being airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Dutcher went

through four surgeries in 11 days and then another one eight months later. Through months of hardship and physical therapy, Dutcher was finally ready to get back in the pool. Swimming being a huge part of his life, this was something he was determined to get back into. Living in California, there wasn’t much opportunity. Moving to Washington his sophomore year is what opened his eyes to his new dream: “To inspire, and show everyone that anything is possible.” His senior year he was named captain, and he was finally able to show off his leadership abilities. Even with what people call a setback, Dutcher used it is as a way to prove everyone wrong. Pure domination in the pool, getting third at districts and qualifying for State. Through it all he never gave up, but instead never lost faith. “This happened for a reason and God has a plan for me.” With his family supporting him, his faith and prayer keeps him going. Dutcher was handed an opportunity to train and possibly compete in the paralympics in Rio. When it came up that Tye’s time qualified for the paralympics, he knew

this was why everything happened. Dutcher has inspired so many people; that’s what he believes he is supposed to do. Sharing his story gives him a belief that he has changed lives. “I wouldn’t change a thing, because if my accident didn’t happen I wouldn’t have accomplished so many amazing things. I inspire people.” PHOTO BY DYLAN JOHNSTON

Senior Tye Dutcher sees injury not as a disability, but as an inspiration to himself and his fellow teamates. After the accident that took his right foot, Dutcher was determined to get back into swimming, and never gave up on his dreams. Those dreams include a trip to the paralympics in Rio.
