I

t’s been a busy time over here at Indulge, with changes both big and small. For starters, I have taken over as editor while Melissa is away, spending time with her new – and adorable – family. I had some big shoes to fill, and I must admit, I was nervous to head the magazine, but I’m happy I made the decision. Sometimes the most daunting tasks are the ones offering the greatest rewards. So it’s important to do things that are good for you, whether it’s facing new challenges or slowing down to catch your breath. I had to remind myself of that recently after becoming a homeowner with my boyfriend, facing an onslaught of paperwork, bills and the never-ending shopping for toilet paper, mustard and other household items you don’t think about until you need them. I felt I would never be able to relax and enjoy my place. Fortunately, I did. But it took a lot of encouragement (of the forceful kind) from my better half to gear down and take in all our hard work making the house our home.

4 MARCH 2012 Indulge

That experience was part of the inspiration for this issue, in which we focus on the importance of taking care of yourself, mind, body and soul – a task I know is easier said than done. Taking care of yourself doesn’t necessarily mean booking a two-week vacation to a tropical destination. It can also mean setting a few minutes aside to make your life a bit more efficient and worry-free. In this issue of Indulge, we explore how you can make your life that much better, from healthy and delicious breakfast ideas, to tips from a professional organizer on how to declutter your home (and your mind). And who better to talk to about taking care of yourself than Canadian rock goddess and yoga enthusiast Bif Naked, who opens up about why cancer was one of the best things to ever have happened to her. I hope you enjoy this issue of Indulge, preferably when you’re taking an allimportant relaxation break.

if Naked is thankful she had breast cancer. Sitting in her manager’s Vancouver condo with her beloved 14-year-old Maltese, Nicklas, in her lap, the tiny, black-clad Vancouver rocker says she is appreciative of her two-year struggle with the disease that resulted in 13 months of chemotherapy and the removal of her ovaries in order to ensure the cancerous cells didn’t spread. “It was amazing. I’m so happy I went through it, honestly, because it was a fantastic opportunity to experience that as a writer, as a performer and as a human,” she says. “To be able to work with other people and be like, ‘yeah, I absolutely understand,’ I’m glad I went through it.” Born Beth Torbert on June 15, 1971, in India, the American-Canadian singer has always been known for her upbeat, confident personality, which she credits with helping her through her recovery. Following chemo, she admits, her outlook on life was not radically altered immediately. But she began to assess things she considered detrimental to her, and soon realized there were several things she needed to change.

6 MARCH 2012 Indulge

“I began to make adjustments very quickly. Before, I would prefer to sacrifice myself rather than pipe up about something that was bothering me. But I found that after cancer, with things that were terribly uncool, now I will say, ‘I don’t think I survived cancer to do this.’ “I’ll convince myself I have a right to speak up about something that is not OK, that is something new for me.” For some, it may be hard to imagine Bif, who is brimming with confidence and positive energy, as ever being timid or even vulnerable – and for the most part, she says, she is anything but. However, she admits life after cancer was a big transformation. The removal of her ovaries in 2009 catapulted her into menopause at the age of 39, coinciding with a tour to promote her latest album, The Promise, a collection of songs written and produced while undergoing treatment. Her return to the stage just weeks after surgery, however, left her with a heavy heart. “I still had my chemo hair and I just had my oophorectomy, so I still had my stitches, but I did a tour and after that I swore I would never go on tour again. I was so selfconscious and so stupid.

I look out into the crowd and there is not a single face out there, it’s just all iPhones. “I look out into the crowd and there is not a single face out there, it’s just all iPhones. Our culture is now that; all you perform to is iPhones, not faces.” The experience left her feeling as though she was on display as a “dancing cancer monkey.” And, subsequently, every show on the tour was a repeat of the same thing: a crowd of phones. She eventually realized that the cellphone phenomena had nothing to do with her, or with cancer, or with music – but everything to do with the immediacy-obsessed culture we now live in. “People are able to capture what they are seeing and instantly put it in the universe. I kind of had to get over my selfconsciousness, but it’s been a struggle.” The following year, she faced her next challenge, with the end of her three-year marriage to Vancouver sports writer Ian Walker. Turning to yoga to deal with the grief, she found that being in a class with other students was a struggle as her emotions seeped out; she felt exposed and embarrassed. “Last year, I was going through heartbreak, so every time I was in Shavasana, I would start crying and I wouldn’t even know it. I started feeling self-conscious and stopped going to class altogether – and the gym – because everyone kept asking me about my last marriage.” This forced Bif to develop ways to stay fit on her own at home. She switched her focus from training and bodybuilding to restoration of her mind, body and soul. “After 20 years, I stopped running, not just physically, but in my head. I stopped running and I sat down and I asked what are my needs and priorities. They’re not getting my body fat down anymore, because I don’t give a f---.” After reaching an emotional plateau, she began focusing on her passion for people and the need for more open discussion about cancer. She recalls her own experience following her diagnosis, walking in hospitals and seeing patients in their own bubble, eyes down and not speaking. The atmosphere was one of fear and anxiety, forcing Bif to break that uncomfortable silence with discussion to 8 MARCH 2012 Indulge

ease their worries and her own. “There’s so many multilayers to each person’s story, like little onions. Everyone is like a little walking onion. I was, like, no way, so I went up to people and I spoke to them and I was, like, ‘let’s not be upset, let’s talk about it.’” With no family living in the province, she received comfort from other patients, and reciprocated that care and compassion. She also volunteered for whatever she could in order to speak to women going through the same challenges, taking part in trials to reach out to others and find out all she could about her illness. One trial she participated in was an experience she compared to being in an army, huddled in the trenches, during a war. “I was in a trial with 100 bald women and nobody knew what anyone’s job was, none of these women ever heard of me and they didn’t care – it was wonderful. We were all in the trenches together and it was the best

thing that ever happened to me. “If I didn’t have that, or the other patients to be around, I don’t know what would have become of me.” Knowing firsthand the comfort that comes from speaking to someone who can relate to the tumultuous emotions experienced with cancer, it became evident she was put in the position to do something. “I think my job is kind of like saying, ‘hey, let’s talk about it,’” she said. “If I can encourage people to be more brave, then that’s great. I think I’ve done what I’m really meant to do.” With two albums set to come out this year and an autobiography in the works, the Juno Award-winning rocker is excited to be embarking on a new journey in her life. “I feel like an opening flower and I’ve never felt that way before. It’s new to me. It’s truly a shift for me and discovering it has been really cool. I’m finally finding my own voice.”

Chef/owners Jean-Francis and Alessandra Quaglia are healthy proof of the merits of a good start to the day and an even healthier appetite for good living. Ten years ago, they opened their second Vancouver restaurant, Provence Marinaside, under the spotlight and scrutiny of Food Network’s Opening Soon; they’ve been entertaining company since in more ways than one. route. The duo is presently on deck to host a culinary cruise to the Caribbean with Holland-America in April. As parents of two and co-owners of Vancouver’s award-winning French restaurants, Provence and Provence Marinaside, the pair’s excellence on the plate is exceeded perhaps only by their endurance. Besides raising a pair of children, Chef Jean-Francis has his BMW

Healthy is just fresh and sensible. Eat what you love - unless what you love is major processed food. GS Endura motorcycle and budding black belt in counselling, while Alessandra celebrates salsa on a competitive level and has a dance studio at home. Yoga works wonders for both. “It keeps me grounded, healthy and flexible for when I have to go up into the ceiling and fix something in the kitchen,” Jean-Francis said. As per the threeyear counselling program in which he is immersed, it pays similar dividends. “I refuse to go through life and not enjoy myself, but there are things that frustrate, so we all need to find ways to make it work smoothly.” Such as breakfast? Sharing a morning in the kitchen with Indulge, Alessandra stirring the polenta, Jean-Francis putting his touch to an

omelette, the ritual of the morning meal becomes apparent. On any given morning, breakfast is in full swing in the Quaglia kitchen. “Actually, breakfast is a funny thing. We love breakfast. Still, after 10 years, people still don’t know that we serve breakfast,” said Jean-Francis. Save for weekends and holidays, which bring the brunch crowd like clockwork, breakfast is perhaps the only time you will find a quiet corner to call your own at Provence Marinaside. Then there is understandable industry attitude. He explains, “Not everyone wants to wake up at 5 a.m. to do the prep work. Some chefs see it as a downgrade from dinner. We like to show how you can be creative and take real pride in breakfast.” That pride shows on both the faces in the kitchen and where it counts most, on

the menu, where the house-styled croque benedict vies with the croissant shrimp benedict and ham and cheese omelette for most favoured. Naturally, breakfast takes on a lighter note as well, with a steady flow of special requests to be accommodated, ranging from the dietary to the die-hard health nuts who have come to crave JeanFrancis’ egg white omelettes. “We have plenty of healthy options and don’t mind making something up at all, but people really love our take on the croque monsieur benedict-style and, no, that’s not really too healthy,” admits Jean-Francis. “Healthy is just fresh and sensible. Eat what you love unless what you love is major processed food,” said Alessandra. At home, the menu’s bend towards healthy is more obvious. “It gets harder to set aside the time as the kids get older, especially on the weekdays, but breakfast doesn’t have to be complex. You can come to the restaurant for that,” said Alessandra with a grin. “It just needs to be there as both a start and anchor for the day.” Her own secret recipe for a fresh start? A cold glass of orange juice swirled with honey and lavender. INDULGE • MARCH 2012 13

almond soy milk water polenta organic cane sugar salt maple syrup fresh berries or fruit in season Garnish with toasted pecans, almonds or filberts

In a medium-size pot over high heat, bring almond soy milk and water to a boil. Reduce heat so liquid is barely boiling. Stirring constantly, pour in polenta in a thin, steady stream; pausing occasionally to break up any lumps. Stir in sugar and salt. Simmer, stirring often, until polenta is soft and creamy to bite, 20 to 40 minutes (if heat is too high, bubbles may ‘spit’ globs of hot polenta out of the pot). Pour polenta into two bowls and drizzle the maple syrup around, one tbsp each, or as much as you like. Top with fruit and nuts.

Professional hairstylist and makeup artist Robyn Jenkins explains how she transformed Jacqueline’s look from day to night.

It’s Time for a Spring Make Over. Beautiful Skin Starts Here! Jacqueline’s makeup is a ‘50s inspired look with soft, light frosted base on the eyelids with brown contouring in the crease and no makeup on the bottom. Robyn winged out black eyeliner and added mascara, with a few individual lashes to add a “special pop.” Robyn applied two types of blush, one bronze blush to add contouring to the face and a light pink on the balls of the cheeks. For the evening look, she darkened the lips, added a soft dark brown/black eye shadow the bottom of the eyes and to the outside creases on the eye lid. Robyn topped it off with more bronzed blush and mascara.

Organizational Disorder by Christie Judson

E

at less, exercise more, get organized. If you’re like most people, you’re constantly trying to work on those three goals. Achieving the first two goals is pretty straightforward: institute a moratorium on drive-thrus and dust off the treadmill – again. However, when it comes to “conquering the clutter,” most of us aren’t sure where to begin. Of course, it’s no wonder: the thought of organizing a linen closet that has lost its way or (gasp) tackling the “junk” drawer – a shambolic catch-all of random odds and ends ranging from out-of-date grocery coupons to dried up superglue, MIA Scrabble pieces and an arsenal of loose screws and rubber bands – is enough to send most of us packing (and not in a handy Rubbermaid kind of way). Yet, while the job of getting organized may seem like a daunting challenge, according to Janis Nylund, professional organizer and

20 MARCH 2012 Indulge

owner of Orderly Concepts & Solutions in South Surrey, there are important health benefits and practical rewards to living or working in an efficient and well-planned environment. “In addition to providing peace of mind and enhanced function, aesthetic and safety, good organization helps to reduce stress, boost productivity and save people significant amounts of time and money,” said Nylund. “Disorganized, cluttered spaces and inefficient systems in the home or office can often lead to panic, confusion, lack of focus and a perpetual feeling of being overwhelmed.” While she says most people are aware when they have “lost control,” telltale signs of chronic disorganization include frequently being late or running out of time, missing important dates and events, frequently misplacing items, not being able to relax and buying duplicate items of things you already own.

“Having too many things and a lack of logical systems or dedicated spaces for specific items and simple day-to-day functions, such as opening the mail, creates clutter and distraction. You can have stuff stuck in the basement and just knowing it is there creates mental clutter. Some of my clients have too much stuff in their bedrooms and complain of not getting a decent night’s sleep.” While she says closets, garages, kitchens, basements and offices tend to be the most common spaces in need of reorganization, Nylund always recommends that her clients start with the areas that are causing them the most stress, costing them money or leading to problems such as missed deadlines or bill payments. “If you are going at it alone, start on something easy, such as a closet or desk. Take everything out so that you can separate the items into categories or like-item piles.

“Once you see everything you have, you can make better decisions on what to keep or toss. In terms of storage solutions and organizing systems, Nylund prefers anything that doesn’t take an extra step. “In other words, I prefer a drawer system over a lid system – especially for kids, said Nylund. “Lids get lost, whereas a drawer is built-in and requires one direct movement for accessing and retrieving. “Sterilite drawers are one of my favourites for closets, playrooms, laundry rooms, pantries and garages. They come in a variety of sizes, stack nicely and are aesthetically pleasing. When organizing a child’s space, such as a bedroom or playroom, I recommend staying away from multi-coloured containers. Children grow older in no time and those colours will become too primary for them. Plus, too many colours can make the room appear more cluttered. The organization specialist, who is often hired alongside interior designers and

architects at the start of a renovation or new home construction project, says custom-ďŹ t built-ins are a great option for homeowners and professionals who want to get the most out of their space by incorporating highly functional organization systems that reect their particular needs and lifestyle. “Everyone has a different organizing style. The majority of my clients are visual, meaning they need to see an item or system (basket, desktop ďŹ ler or sticky note) out in the open. Others prefer everything to be neatly tucked away. Basically, it comes down to liking the system you use. If it ďŹ ts with your organizing style, you will use it!â€? Quick Organization Tips: • Make organization part of your interior decor. Get the whole family on board with organization by Christie Judson Linda Chu, owner of Out of Chaos and founder of the B.C. Lower Mainland Chapter of Professional Organizers in Canada, says establishing organizational systems in the home not only helps reduce family stress and anxiety, but teaches children lifelong skills that will help them learn to be self-sufďŹ cient, organized adults. To get a handle on busy schedules, while establishing important household routines, Chu offers the following simple family-friendly tips:

Create a Drop Zone Install labelled wall pockets in a common “drop area (kitchen, mud room, family room) to help organize school notices, homework, artwork, etc. Help kids get into the habit of organizing their papers

and emptying their backpacks (including lunch containers and water bottles) as soon as they come home from school.

Calendar Essentials Rather than juggling multiple calendars for mom, dad and kids, use one master calendar to minimize the risk of missed events and appointments. Whether you are using an electronic or printed calendar, be sure to highlight each family member’s calendar entry with a different colour, as it will make planning easier and save time in the long run. Before the new week begins, have a brief family meeting to gather important dates to enter into the master calendar. Make the “meetings into a fun family games night or incorporate a tradition of hot cocoa and popcorn.

Get away from it all Local getaway spots to recuperate and rejuvenate by Sarah Massah When you’re on the go with work and everything else that fills up your schedule, it can be hard to find the time to relax. But it’s imperative to give yourself a break to rejuvenate mind, body and soul. British Columbia has a bounty of resorts combining spas with health and fitness. These retreats pack in exercise, relaxation and even education in a short amount of time, making it the perfect getaway for someone constantly on the go.

Salt Springs Spa Resort www.saltspringspa.com Nestled away along the calm waters of the Trincomali Channel, the 29 acre seaside spa resort provides the perfect backdrop to a relaxing getaway. For those looking to ease into the idea of a spa vacation, every Thursday evening, the resort invites guests to its Oneness Meditation and Blessing (Deeksha) gathering. The blessing is a non-denominational benediction described as a unique and specific blessing, transfering Divine Energy, which over time, brings the state of Oneness in the recipient. For those looking to take the plunge, the resort offers two and three night spa getaways focusing on fitness, weight-loss and yoga. Each retreat includes an itinerary that is full of rejuvenating activities, including massages, meals and exercise.

Coastal Trek Health and Wellness Resort www.coastaltrekresort.com Surrounded by one million acres of old growth forest in the Comox Valley, this resort is a must for those who love to hike in the beautiful trails British Columbia is known for. Coastal Trek offers two options for those that want to get their body in motion, including their two day, three night health, hiking and fitness program, Taste of Trek. The two day program is a compact version of the seven night, six day hiking and fitness program offered, 26 MARCH 2012 Indulge

and includes three nights accommodation, two guided hikes, one relaxation massage and three early morning yoga classes, as well as all meals and snacks.

Fresh Start Health Retreat www.healthretreat.ca Located on Vancouver Island in Oyster Bay, Fresh Start is a health restorative retreat held at Ocean Resort. The retreat focuses on cleansing the body of toxins and rejuvenating the mind and body. The shortest health restoration program, The 5 Day Re-Energizer, uses juice fasting as a tool to cleanse, boasting an average weight loss of between five to seven pounds. It can also help with a range of ailments including sinus problems, headaches, muscle pain and even bad breath. And don’t let the name fool you, even though it is called a juice cleanse, there are semi-fasting days which incorporate fruit and vegetable smoothies and gourmet raw organic meals. The five days also include daily steam baths, health lectures and healthy drink preparation workshops, two guided meditations, two yoga classes and one excursion.

Mountain Waters Retreat www.mountainwatersretreats.ca Mountain Waters Retreat offers a unique combination of pristine natural settings and proximity to world-class amenities, with the city of Nelson just a short walk away. A glass (or three) a day, keeps the doctor away... A male relative, age 42, told me recently that he drinks a glass of red wine every day to keep his cholesterol down. Because there are so many claims regarding the benefits of wine, I looked this up in a source I trust – a 2003 book by a Seattle writer named Gene Ford, called The Science of Healthy Drinking (published by the Wine Appreciation Guild of San Francisco). “Daily drinking has been identified in many studies thus far as a contributor to balancing cholesterol levels and, in doing so, to lessening atherosclerosis,” the author writes. Whoever advised my relative was not talking through his hat. It is always controversial to maintain that drinking wine can actually be healthy. There are numerous religions and temperance JOHN advocates that Schreiner forbid drinking, the implication being that it is inherently bad for you. Over-consumption of any drink is bad for you – whether that is wine, beer, spirits or Coca-Cola. To quote from a paper written by a wine-tasting doctor I used to know: “…every remedy which has a potential for good can also, in excess, cause harm.” These beverages are beneficial only when they are incorporated in a wholesome lifestyle that includes moderate drinking, a balanced diet, proper exercise and adequate rest. The idea that wine, and red wine in particular, is healthy seized the popular mind in November 1991 when broadcaster Morley Safer discussed this during one of his widely-watched programs on the 60 Minutes television show. Among others, he interviewed Dr. Serge Renaud, a French doctor who had been researching the place of wine in a healthy diet for years. This became known as The French Paradox: the French have an abundance of fat in their diets but significantly less cardiovascular disease than Americans. One of the explanations (but not the only one) is that the French consumed a lot more wine. Renaud told Safer that it had been “welldocumented” for years that “a moderate intake

When asked to deďŹ ne moderate, the doctor said: “I mean a few glasses of wine per day.â€? The quantity has been deďŹ ned exibly. Some years ago, a Vancouver doctor, in a paper given at the Playhouse International Wine Festival, put the recommended daily intake at close to half a litre. That would be excessive on its own but, in combination with meals, it is merely generous. The Gene Ford book, which is replete with citations of peer-reviewed research, argues that wine beneďŹ ts more than cardiovascular health. “Two to three drinks a day reduce cancer rates,â€? he wrote. “Alcohol may delay Alzheimer’s onset up to three years ‌ An 8o per cent decrease is found in the rate of dementia.â€? Wine and diabetes: “There is less diabetes incidence among moderate drinkers.â€? Wine and gallstones: “Moderate drinking protects against ‌ gallstones.â€? Wine and osteoporosis: “Higher bone density is found among ‌ consumers of twelve drinks a week.â€? Drinking can even reduce stress - not that we need studies to prove that. One of the most surprising chapters maintains that moderate drinkers are at a far lower risk of getting the common cold. “Consumers of two to three drinks daily had an eighty-ďŹ ve per cent greater resistance,â€? he wrote. Why? It seems that only a handful of research studies had been done. I would think that the antiseptic effect of the alcohol might have something to do with killing cold viruses in much the same way that it counters the bacteria that causes many stomach ulcers. Wine is not a panacea for all that ails us, nor beneďŹ cial in excess. But since people have been drinking fermented beverages at least for 10,000 years, it is hardly a “poisonâ€? as the anti-drink lobby characterizes it. I am with the British scholar, Henry Aldridge, who wrote in the 17th Century that there are ďŹ ve reasons to drink: “Good wine, a friend, or being dry ‌ or lest we should be by and by ‌ or any other reason why.â€?

ADVERTORIAL

Think smart. Think energy smart. Think LED smart. Design Lighting carries a large variety of LED products including landscape, decorative interior and exterior, under cabinet, pot lights, light bulbs and more. What is LED? Light Emitting Diodes. A diode allows current to flow through it only in one direction. LEDs emit a highly directional light across a narrow frequency range, setting them apart from a standard light bulb which emits the light at all angles. This makes the LED much more efficient and gives it an exact color output. What are the advantages of LED? LEDs consume very little power, 75% less than an incandescent and 50% less than CFLs. They also focus the light, making them much more efficient than a regular bulb. LEDs also have an incredibly long lifetime of 50,000+ hours versus the typical 2,000 hours we get out of a standard light bulb.

LEDs do not produce any UV light which can damage photography and artwork, while traditional lighting can. At Design Lighting we carefully choose only the best LEDs, as there are many low quality LEDs currently in the market. We choose LEDs from reputable suppliers and also test the LEDs ourselves to make sure they are of good quality. LEDs can be used in almost every area of your home. Any area where an incandescent or a halogen bulb is used there is an LED solution. Many customers find changing standard halogen under cabinet light bulbs can be expensive and challenging, but with LED this is no longer a problem. At Design Lighting “service is key. We are passionate about lighting and have a well informed sales staff here to serve you better. We believe that LED lighting is an integral part of lighting the future. So stop in at our showroom and enjoy a gourmet VanHoutte coffee on us and let us show you our latest in LED products.
