he word ‘adventure’ can have a multitude of different meanings, depending on who you ask. For some, it could be diving out of an airplane, 12,000 feet above the ground as you plummet to the earth at a speed of 120 miles per hour. Others, however, might list the most adventurous thing they’ve ever done as a camping trip to Golden Ears where they slept in a tent and ate hotdogs cooked over a campfire. Defined in my handy online dictionary as “an unusual or exciting, typically hazardous activity or experience,” adventure can be summed up as anything that gets your heart racing, and makes you feel like you’ve conquered the world upon completion. I think you may be hard pressed to find someone around this province – or even this country – more familiar with that pulseracing feeling than the Man in Motion, Rick Hansen. After all, what’s more unusual, exciting or hazardous than spending 26 months wheeling through 34 countries over four continents? 4 JUNE 2011 ).$5,'%

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Man in Motion Tour, Hansen shares with Indulge his recollections of the ups and downs that came with his great adventure, as well as what’s in store for him in the coming months. Also, with summer on the horizon, Chef Angie Quaale, of Langley’s Well Seasoned, shares some of her barbecue expertise and a few mouth-watering recipes that will have you blowing the dust off your picnic basket. Then we take a look at the trends in creating outdoor living spaces, which go well beyond a patio set and lanterns. And if you’re on the hunt for a summer vacation, check out our feature on adventure travel, which explores some of the world’s most exciting and exhilarating destinations. To wrap up this edition of Indulge, we offer a summer fashion feature and unveil wineries that double as hiking spots. So here’s to excitement, going outside your comfort zone and that uplifting feeling that comes with life’s many adventures.

ngie Quaale not only grills with the best of them, she barbecues in a league of her own. As the province’s female barbecue pitmaster on the competitive circuit, she is the undisputed B.C. Queen of BBQ, as well as one of only two female head judges in Western Canada certified by the Pacific Northwest BBQ Association. She has barbecues like rock stars have guitars, and come summer, the Webber clamshell and fully stocked hamper are in-car necessities. Not surprisingly, Quaale can picnic on a dime – especially considering where she spends her days. “Picnics and barbecue go hand in hand. It’s easy to be spontaneous when you are prepared,” says Quaale who never travels far without the requisite corkscrew, cutlery, glasses, knife, napkins, plates and simple seasonings. “With a bit of forethought, you can picnic anywhere, anytime.” As the owner of Langley’s gourmet food store, Well Seasoned, Quaale opened the doors to the perfect pantry for Fraser Valley freshness in 2004: salts, oils, spices, marinades and more, bundled with a coterie of hand-picked pots, pans, local products and a bustling cooking school. Unquestionably, Well Seasoned has lived up to its name since opening, and become a Fraser Valley hub for chefs and home cooks, wine masters and glass acts alike. “We have a lot of weekend warriors coming out to explore, but there are still a lot of people who see gourmet as scary,” says Quaale with a grin that is anything but. “Eating fast food in your car is scary. We have plenty of good alternatives here. Everything I make is real food for real people.” “Here” references both Well Seasoned’s well-stocked domain, as well as the grander scope of the surrounding community. “Staying in, eating at home and doing it well, does not have to be complicated,” she explains. “Especially when we are so lucky in the Valley to have such a wide range of suppliers.” From the produce of Windset Farms to the pristine pork of Gelderman and top turkey of JD Farms, alongside the local bakeries and artisan cheese makers, Quaale admits that the Fraser Valley

Eating at home and doing it well does not have to be complicated.

may be lean on haute cuisine, but has all the fixings for gourmet goodness on a daily basis. “We could easily do a 50-mile diet out here,” Quaale says before adding with a nod to her stocked shelves. “Naturally, I take an 80/20 view on local eating. Exploring the backyard potential is important, but I am not giving up on oil, lemons, salt, pepper and whatnot.” Other essentials that keep Quaale’s home fires burning with quick kitchen inspiration include arborio rice, pasta, good canned San Marzano tomatoes, a range of canned beans, peanut butter, tahini, pesto and hummus. Where she is most in her element, though, is in the realm of low and slow – and she is quick to point out the difference between barbecue and firing up the grill. The first is where her mastery shines, as she and her husband compete under the team name of “Completely Q-less” on the competitive barbecue circuit. Crowned Grand Champions in Kelowna at the 2010 Smoke on the Water BBQ competition, for four years running, Quaale has been the local hero behind the Well Seasoned BBQ on the Bypass. While this year’s event is not until Sept. 18, Indulge readers don’t have to wait that long to savour a quotient of Quaale’s barbecue. For the truly Q-less, her slow-cooked pulled turkey comes together beautifully in a crock pot – and tastes even better cold on a bun stretched out on a blanket somewhere warm with friends! i

The Man in Motion looks back on 25 years of turmoil and triumph [r F^ebllZ LfZee^r

t all started with a summer excursion of an adventurous teen and his best buddy – a fishing trip to the plains of the Chilcotin in B.C.’s Cariboo country. Unbeknownst to a young Rick Hansen, the trip’s tragic turn of events would lead to the greatest adventure of his life – now celebrating its quarter-century anniversary – and the creation of a Canadian icon. Growing up in Williams Lake, Hansen was exposed to plenty of adventure opportunities at a young age. “If you loved the outdoors, if you loved adventure, if you loved sports, it was a mecca. Williams Lake had it all,” he recalls from his office at Rick Hansen Foundation headquarters in Richmond. As an avid athlete and adventure-seeker, he had dreams of one day representing his country in the Olympics, and in the summer of 1973, the 15-year-old was preparing to try out for a provincial volleyball squad. But a hitchhiked ride home from a fishing trip in the back of a pickup truck put an end to those dreams – the driver crashed, sending Hansen flying out of the truck, breaking his back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. “It was a pretty dark period when I was filled with a lot of depression, frustration, despair,” Hansen acknowledges. “I didn’t know anybody before who had a spinal cord injury or any kind of major disability, so I thought that all my life as I had been preparing and building and living was gone.” With the help of family, friends, medical professionals and other role models, Hansen was able to reignite his hopes and dreams, and focus on life’s new possibilities. “I was still essentially the same person – Rick, the adventurer, the pioneer, the outdoors guy that loved sports,” he says. “I could still be an athlete, and nowhere in the definition of athlete does it say I have to use my legs.” Within three years of his injury, Hansen was back to competing in sport, as a member of a championship wheelchair basketball team in Vancouver. He began studying physical education at UBC, where he turned his focus to wheelchair marathoning. He went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons and six Paralympic medals in 1980 and 1984. He also participated in the 1984 Olympic Games Wheelchair Exhibition in Los Angeles. Although pleased with the athletic success he had achieved, Hansen’s world travels opened his eyes to the physical barriers – as well as negative stereotyping – that faced people with disabilities. The desire to raise global awareness, and give thanks to those who had helped him over the years, set the course for Hansen’s greatest, most difficult and rewarding adventure. “I decided I would wheel around the world in a wheelchair to

Ma^ @k^Zm PZee h_ <abgZ% :ikbe *,% *21/ demonstrate the positive attributes of a person with a disability and the potential that was there if barriers were removed,” he explains, adding that the fundraising component of what would be coined the Man in Motion World Tour came as a secondary objective. “It was hard to measure awareness, especially back then. And the impact for fundraising for something that you cared about as well would be a tangible expression of how people would respond.” On March 21, 1985, Hansen set out from Vancouver’s Oakridge Mall, embarking on a 40,000-km, 26-month world tour that saw him wheel through 34 countries on four continents and raise $26 million for spinal cord research – more than double the original goal set. Hansen and his tour team battled through countless emotional and physical setbacks – injuries, extreme exhaustion, self-doubt and skepticism of others. But for all the devastating lows and moments he was on the verge of quitting, Hansen said there were plenty of peaks that made the struggle worthwhile, recalling a visit to a small village in Poland that stands out as particularly memorable.

The contrast of how much change has taken place was dramatic. “During one of the ceremonies, there was a fellow who was disabled, and he pushed himself, not on a wheelchair, but on a piece of plywood that had four skateboard wheels,” he recalls. “He was weeping tears of joy, because for the first time his family and his community were looking at him as a person of ability. When you see highlights like that, you go, ‘this is why we’re doing it.’” Hansen’s journey came to an end May 22, 1987 in front of more than 50,000 cheering supporters at B.C. Place Stadium – the same venue he would play a pivotal role in the Winter Olympic opening ceremonies as a torchbearer, nearly 23 years later. “It was an incredible source of pride to be asked to be part of the Games.” The last day of Vancouver’s Games – on March 21, 2010, – landed 25 years to the day the Man in Motion World Tour started, and served as the perfect launch date for the tour’s 25th anniversary celebrations. In honour of the milestone, the Rick Hansen Foundation has a number of festivities in the works, including visits by the Man in Motion to five countries he

wheeled through during the original tour. He has already returned to Australia, Israel and Jordan over the past eight months, and in April spent time in China where he took part in a symbolic relay on the Great Wall of China, exactly 25 years to the date of his original visit. “The contrast of how much change has taken place was dramatic,” he says of the progress made in China in accessibility and social acceptance for disabled people.

This month, Hansen is visiting New York City, Washington, DC and Miami, Fl. to wrap up the first phase of anniversary celebrations. Later this year, a Canadian anniversary celebration will be launched, in the form of a cross-country relay re-tracing Hansen’s original route, and featuring 9,000 ‘difference makers.’ (Those wanting to take part in the relay can apply online at www. rickhansenrelay.com) “We want to make sure that Canada from coast to coast is fully engaged in this continuing journey,” Hansen says, adding the goal of the relay is to “transfer the theme from one man in motion to many in motion.” As much fun, celebration and adventure is on tap for Hansen and his foundation members as they celebrate the Man in Motion tour’s 25th anniversary, he’s quick to note that “we still have a long way to go.” “We can make an even greater difference in the next 25 years, and that inspires me to believe that my best work is still in front of me.” i

DESIGN TIPS

Cakes & Confections

Budget Don’t begin planning (or dreaming) until you have determined your budget and discussed it with your builder. Give yourself a margin of 10 – 15 per cent for changes or delays. This way, everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal.

for special occasions

Style Are you aiming for a Mediterranean, French country, Zen or minimalist design? Go through some magazines and put together an “image board” so your designer and builder have a visual of your likes and dislikes ahead of time.

Function Focus on what you really want to achieve from the living space. Most people would like a combination of the following: a quiet oasis, a place where family can hang out and a place to entertain friends — essentially, three rooms! Generally, the key to a great outdoor living space is to think about how to achieve all three in one area.

Bakery • Deli • Bistro 4123 200th Street, Brookswood | 604.530.1737 cedarbrookbakerydeli.com | open 8am-8pm 7 days a week

Lighting Remember the lighting. Most people only think about this at the end, when it’s more difficult to incorporate into your plan. Also think about gas points and electrical outlets and even where you’re going to store wood if you incorporate a wood burning oven.

Hardscaping/Landscaping These two important elements bring your space to life. Hardscaping is the style and type of brick and stone you want: the pavers, the decking, the fencing and even the seating. Landscaping adds softness to your outdoor space with plants, greenery, texture, height and form.

Permits and Bylaws Before you start your project, check with the city if you require permits for any of the work and to be sure your project abides by city by-laws. Courtesy Casa Vita Outdoor Living. www.casavitaoutdoorliving.com

hether you’re a true-blue adventure hound or simply looking for an exciting summer vacation that “gets you off the tour bus and out of the resort,” Laura Main, a manager at The Adventure Travel Company, says 2011 offers an array of options for adventurous fun seekers of all types and tastes. “Adventure travel isn’t about demographics,” said Main. “It’s a mindset. lifestyles. Our clients span an incredibly wide range – all with different definitions of ‘adventure.’” For some, she says, an adventure may mean taking a year off to travel the world and “hitting as many destinations as possible.” For others, it may include taking the family to an exotic locale, volunteering abroad, trekking to the top of a mountain, soaking up a new culture or knocking a long anticipated trip off their “bucket list.” “Either way, we’re finding that Canadians

are seeking more meaningful travel experiences that take them off the beaten path for a more authentic adventure. Though, like anything else, there are good ones and bad ones, and certain itineraries (are) better suited to certain needs and preferences than others.” So, when it comes to deciding which one is right for you, Main suggests start by thinking about where you want to go and what you want to do. “Planning ahead can often secure you a

better deal and (offer) more routing options… and for some destinations, booking ahead may be necessary. For example, in order to trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, you need a permit and there are only a certain number of these allotted at any given time.” Since many adventure travel destinations require complex itineraries that include international flights and domestic connections, Main also recommends talking to an adventure travel expert – particularly someone who will take the time to get to know you and learn about your needs, wants and budget. “The most important thing is to make sure your trip is booked through a reputable company,” she warns. “Many adventure travel options take travellers to remote international locations where regulations and customer service standards may not meet ours here in Canada. Booking through a reputable travel agency in Canada will ensure that you’re protected and (that) the local operators and suppliers you’ll be travelling with meet your standards for service and safety.”

As a custom trip-planning specialist, Main acknowledges she has been privy to some “pretty unique” bookings, including a family volcano-climbing expedition to Indonesia, a 50th birthday celebration atop Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro and a whirlwind backpacking trip for a retired single dad. But with so many available options, she reminds people to do their homework. “You can check out our website for some great ideas to get you started,” she suggests. “Browse our regional guides, our agent picks and our top 10 lists for inspiration. (We) also hold travel talks every few weeks on various destinations. Our adventure specialists share their stories, pictures and advice.” When it comes to adventure travel safety, Main advises there are potential medical and safety concerns associated with any type of travel and exploration. However, she says people shouldn’t – “within reason” – let it deter them from getting out there and experiencing the wonders of the world. “With the adventure market opening up so much, there are small group tours to almost any destination you can imagine – each partaking in an equally large number of different activities,” said Main. “Be aware, use common sense and always trust your instincts.” i

ake good walking shoes when you go wine touring. That is not just because it is tiring to stand around in tasting rooms (chairs are against regulations!) without good shoes. There is excellent hiking in wine country. My favourites include the Mission Creek Trail in Kelowna. It starts at Lakeshore Road, just east of the Eldorado Hotel JOHN and the Manteo Schreiner Resort, two of the best hotels in Kelowna. It is a cool, shaded walk, 7½ kilometres one way, beside a creek; and there are plans to extend it about another eight km. The trail is a refreshing break while visiting the nearby wineries. Sperling Vineyards and Tantalus Vineyards are a short walk from the trail. You will want a bike (allowed on the trail) or a car to visit CedarCreek, St. Hubertus, Camelot, Spierhead or The View Winery. The hike works up an appetite for lunch or dinner at Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s excellent restaurant. In Penticton, the Kettle Valley hiking trail begins near the art gallery and then swings north past a number of Naramata Bench wineries. D’Angelo Vineyards operates a bed and breakfast whose selling feature is that five or six wineries are in walking distance. The luxurious Serenata Guesthouse Retreat, located amid a vineyard, is another excellent B&B beside the hiking trail. The Kettle Valley Trail, on an old rail line, is part of a strenuous cycling trail,

especially notable for its breathtaking route over the railroad trestles near Kelowna (restored since the 2003 forest ďŹ re). Those who are not longdistance cyclists will be more than satisďŹ ed with the brisk walk along the Naramata Bench. The trail passes the Red Rooster and Ruby Blues wineries and then climbs uphill behind three wineries – Hillside, Laughing Stock and Black Widow. The views over vineyards, wineries and the lake are a photographer’s delight. A hike I have added to my list recently (I just heard about it) is the climb to the top of McIntyre Bluff. This is the dramatic cliff north of Oliver that looms over Highway 97. In the history of the First Nations in the valley, the cliff was the locale for many battles. To get there, drive up to the Dunham & Froese winery, which is part of Covert Farms, a mile-square vineyard and farm behind the bluff. They will tell you how to access the hike to the top of the bluff, to take in the stunning views over the valley. You will certainly want to slake your thirst at the winery when you come back down. Another ďŹ ne hike with great views is the 6½ km Golden Mile Trail. The best access point is Tinhorn Creek Vineyards. The winery usually has trail maps or at least directions. The trail climbs the mountainside from the top of the winery’s vineyard. The signiďŹ cant elevation gain requires a few rest stops – but you will want to stop anyway to take pictures. On the mountainside, you should see the ruins of the Tin Horn Creek mine’s stamp mill. The trail winds through grazing land in one direction and orchards in the other. The easiest guided hike (there is a modest fee) is at the Nk’Mip Desert Interpretation Centre at Osoyoos, 1½ km one way, with stops to learn about First Nations culture and history. Combine this with a visit to Nk’Mip Cellars and to the Passo Tempo Restaurant, and you have a day to remember. i John Schreiner is one of Canada’s best-known wine writers with 15 books published since 1984.
