Family FOCUS

With all the hub-bub on who should be on the cover of the first issue of The Idaho Family, it became a tug-o-war. The first issue is historical, and it should not be taken lightly. Should it be the publisher and her family, the designer, some family friends, a single child or children, or a political statement. To settle the debate, this issue is on all families with all their loveliness. Families come in all shapes, sizes, and mixtures. Blend, unblend, older parents, teen moms, single dads, uncles and aunts, disabilities, non-traditional, and traditional. That’s what will be covered in The Idaho Family. A story about the limitless love of families. Thus the first issue and cover allows it to be everyone, yet no one. This is in hopes to establish that sharing lives among any diverse family dynamic is equal in The Idaho Family.

Maureen O’Toole has taken special interest in the positive outcomes of young

women. She is the recently appointed CEO of Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council here in Idaho. As a former military intelligence officer and public school teacher, O’Toole is passionate and direct; she will take the organization to new heights beginning with knowing and understanding the value of this legendary organization. O’Toole has not stopped since entering her role in May 2013. She is involving people, creating new concepts, and embracing community. Among the hours spent combing through information she was startled to realize the powerful and positive influence Girl Scouts has been. She organized some data and says, “Give me three years, and I can show you what Girls Scouts can do for a young woman.” So to put her to the test, we asked. Here are the results of her research:

Studies show structured environments can prevent high risk behaviors in youth. Girl Scouts Leadership Experience provides 15 positive outcomes. Non-college grads are five times more likely to be unemployed with Idaho finishing in the bottom 10 states for finishing four-year degrees. Girl Scouts are 81 percent more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree. Traffic fatalities and violent crimes are attributed to underage drinking. 90 percent of Girl Scouts will not participate in underage drinking. Idaho spends 60 million dollars to incarcerate and treat offenders with drug addition. 96 percent of Girl Scouts will never use drugs.

Fears

Angela Ruth Strong

Imagine your child attending their new school as an employee. The first day of school

becomes their first day on the job. That’s a lot of pressure on both child and loving parent. To ease the pressure and prepare for such an uncertain future by building confidence in the same five areas used in the adult world.

It doesn’t have to be like this... Improve Confidence, Study Skills & Grades Experienced & Qualified Tutors All Grades & Subjects

F inancially:

Rather than let a child associate his worth with possessions and then play the blame game, empower him to prioritize and learn the value of a buck by offering a budget. By doing this he can decide if he really wants those flashy sneakers. It just might mean wearing big brother’s hand-medown sweatshirt in exchange. If he complains about the sweatshirt, remind him it was a choice. Shopping can be another opportunity to teach how to create the life he wants to live.

Emotionally:

31

Kids handle fear in different ways. Some will stifle feelings. Some will act out. Others will try and climb the social wall to gain control. You can’t change who they are, but you can create a safe environment for them to let down their walls. Asking open ended questions can help expose possible areas of concern. Complimenting in areas where children show positive traits can build self esteem. And empathizing in areas where the not so preferred experiences lie can communicate a parent’s willingness to listen.

THE IDAHO FAMILY JOURNAL www.theidahofamilyjournal.com

M entally:

Go on a school tour. Map out classes. Meet teachers. Know bus routes, and even play the “what if” game. The more answered questions, the less insecurity.

Socially:

The older kids become, the bigger their social world increases. As much as adults would like to pick friends for their children, that’s not the job. The job is to guide the tricky navigation of youthful relationships. This can be through establishing and/or supporting hobbies, being a source of information when the waters get rocky, and inviting kids over so you can get to know them.

Physically:

For school age children, the first day at school is the first day on their job. Everyone should leave well rested and well fed, but it’s especially important when there are so many emotions coursing through young bodies. Make a habit of healthy living with vitamins and fluids to keep a child energized enough to have the physical activity he needs. As with anything in life, the greater the challenge, the greater the reward. Make that reward obvious by celebrating the end of a child’s first school day on their job. Consider a special evening social to talk about their experiences, starting a weekly journal, or a healthy snack. A well planned first day can settle the nerves and create a smooth transition.

IGNITING

Ivy

H

ollywood movies can bring college campuses to life and often light a spark in the teenage mind of where they want to set their sights. Silly or not, movies such as The Social Network, Legally Blonde, and Good Will Hunting give students a glimpse of what Ivy League campuses and other prestigious universities like Duke and MIT have to offer and might even get them to start thinking about their future.

33

THE IDAHO FAMILY JOURNAL www.theidahofamilyjournal.com

S

prawling lawns, old architecture, student life, and sports games are enough to kick start a life goal. Something as simple as following an Ivy League sports team can be the right type of motivation for a child to set their sights at schools above the margin, especially if they are in a sport themselves. Ivy League and Pac Ten schools are not easy--in fact these are the most prestigious universities in the nation and won’t budge without the right score, right grades, and right application. This is where parenting plays its part. There is nothing wrong with setting the bar high for universities, but a

At Tutor Doctor we had a family in Meridian who were satisfied with their daughter’s ACT composite score of 26. After 6 weeks of tutoring, she raised her composite score to 32. This resulted in $13,000 per year in scholarships. proper support structure at home needs to be in place to make the goal a realistic one.

Motivation plays its own role. As the world

changes, money is the motive for many young people because their future holds unlimited possibilities. As a parent this very thing can be used to the advantage as a higher earning potential comes hand in hand with a higher education degree. This includes expensive cars, clothes, homes, vacations, and an overall better quality of life. Stressing these facts to adolescents can encourage them to think bigger when applying for colleges.

Meeting with alumni and experiencing campus tours also make a huge impact on a student and give them a taste of the real thing. The physical beauty and experience of stepping foot on the campus can send a teen’s head into overdrive for weeks afterwards. Although seemingly superficial these factors encourage and open eyes to the impact of an Ivy League diploma.

Confidence is key.

Incentives for good grades, constant praise, and tutoring are all positive routes to take to build confidence at home. “If the student has the confidence that the goal is achievable then, with the proper reinforcement, guidance and support structure, they will rise to the occasion,” said Robert Rosedale from Tutor Doctor in Boise. Rosedale has had incredible success helping his clients reach goals, especially when it comes to college bars. Preparing students for college testing is vital. Many seventh graders will take the SAT or ACT in the winter to qualify for elite university programs, such as the Duke Talent Identification Program. These qualification programs are a great way for students to understand strengths and weaknesses while getting involved with their dream campus early on. “At Tutor Doctor we had a family in Meridian who were satisfied with their daughter’s ACT composite score of 26. After 6 weeks of tutoring, she raised her composite score to 32. This resulted in $13,000 per year in scholarships and she

was able to apply and be accepted to the school of her dreams,” Rosedale said. Tutoring programs like Tutor Doctor in Boise can make a huge impact on scores that allow a student to qualify for their first choice university. It’s commendable for any young person to set such high academic goals for themselves, as it takes a lot of time, dedication, and self motivation to get into Harvard, Yale, or Princeton.

When preparation meets opportunity, luck happens. It is important for young teens to not lose sight of big dreams, whether they include diplomas from Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale or from Duke, Stanford, Georgetown, MIT, Rice, Johns Hopkins.

Tutor Doctor’s Bob Rosedale is passionate about providing students the academic coaching they need to succeed. He is a retired USAF Colonel and Command Pilot who took his experience training over 500 USAF pilots and brought it to youth education. To schedule a free consultation contact Bob at 208.922.6416
