HOW TO: Have the BEST SUMMER EVER

HOW TO HAVE THE

BEST SUMMER EVER! Dr Yvonne Fedewa, ELifeBoise.com

1. Soak up Some Sun. Ever notice how in the winter, people in general have lower energy, less spunk and more down days? That is because the lack of sunlight leads to the number one vitamin deficiency, Vitamin D3. The best part about summer is not only the sun, but also the health benefits that can be gained from 20 minutes daily of sunlight. When a person is outside the sun hits the skin, and is transformed into Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is needed to take Calcium into the bones. It acts like a vacuum, helping to take Calcium from the blood stream into the bones. So not only does Vitamin D3 help with energy and mood but also with bone health! To soak up this free vitamin, spend 20 minutes a day in the sun with 80% of the body exposed (remember not to over-do it!)

2. Decrease Tension. Having a headache or neck tension can make summer time less fun than it should be. Getting specific scientific chiropractic adjustments can decrease headaches and tension lead to a rockin’-fun summer! Many patients under chiropractic care mention that not only do they have less tension but they also sleep better. Find an office today to get checked out!

3. Workout. As little as 10 minutes of exercise a day can get you into swimming suit shape to be able to enjoy the pool, lake or floating the river. Most of the exercise programs are switching over to shorter, high intensity workouts that throws the body into a fat-burning mode. Pick 1 to 5 exercises and go as hard as possible for 20 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds. Repeat for 10 minutes and for the next 24-36 hours enjoy the benefits of being a fat-burning machine.

7

4. Drink Plenty of Water. Most daytime fatigue comes from lack of water - especially in the heat of summer. It is extremely important not to forget to drink water to stay hydrated. It is best to drink clean water, free of chemicals and unwanted particles found in tap water. Drink filtered water for optimum energy and a fun summer.

5. Eat Fruit. Most fruit is in season in the summer - take advantage of this. Fruit is water rich and full of great vitamins/minerals to help bust the winter blues in to the bright summer. The best fruits to choose are the ones with the most color. Fun colors = fun summer!

TORI KOCH Supportive Mentor & Girls Scouts Ambassador

Maureen O’Toole

Meet Tori Koch, a junior

at Renaissance High School in the IB program. With a quick, engaging smile and an equally quick and engaging hug, Tori is an ambassador of good will as well as being a Girl Scout Ambassador. Despite rigorous academic demands, she worked at Baskin Robbins Ice Cream for 1 1/2 years, is a member of the Renaissance Leo Club, a junior version of the Lions Club, and is ardent in her commitment to Girl Scouts.

“Tori is an ambassador of good will as well as being a Girl Scout Ambassador.” Tori just completed two years as a member of the Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Board of Directors, is part of the Girl Scouts Teen Advisory Committee, and will be a delegate www.gemstatefamily.com

to the Girl Scouts National Convention in October 2014. Her blood runs green, Girl Scout green. Tori leads from the front and from the heart. Her positive energy envelops you as she describes all the things she loves: her family, music (she plays 6 instruments!), volleyball, skate boarding and long boarding, baseball and English and History. You find yourself wondering how you would do on a long board if she coached you as her voice lifts in excitement describing the fun she has on wheels with her friends. What really grabs your heart is hearing Tori’s passion for supporting girls. Tori joined Girl Scouts in kindergarten. Twelve years later, she’s pursuing the Gold Award, the highest award in

Girl Scouts, spent two summers at Camp Alice Pittenger in McCall in the Counselor in Training/Leader in Training program, and plans on becoming a life-long member of Girl Scouts upon high school graduation. Why such a passion for Girl Scout?

“Tori leads from the front and from the heart.” Tori explains “I became very inspired by the message of GS and how it created a safe place for me and my friends. I was bullied in school and GS gave me a place where I belonged and was safe. Girl Scouts made me confident in who I am and what I wanted to be. I realized how much it means to me to be a part of an organization

that benefited so many girls and lives. I know I will stay with it going forward, becoming an adult Girl Scout member and Troop Leader because I want to be a part of creating that powerful, positive change for others.” And the Counselor in Training/ Leader in Training program is where Tori found her gifts and passion for serving young girls. Tori’s voice resonates with sincerity when she describes what that opportunity meant to her. “Being a leader at the Camp Alice Pittenger Leader in Training/Counselor in Training program is hands down my most cherished Girl Scout Experience. As a Counselor in Training, I engage with peers and younger girls, listen to what’s going on in their lives and can help them. As they share their

stories, I let them know that things will get better, that things happen for a reason, and that people care. Because of this leadership experience, I know that I want to work directly with people in a supportive role in a professional capacity.” Her role as a mentor and role model helped Tori identify her life mission and know that her life will make an impact. Ask Tori what she sees in Girl Scouts that inspires her and Tori answers without hestiation, “Girls in Girl Scouts are supported to pursue their dreams. In Girls Scouts it’s not about the limits society puts on you, it’s about what you want to do. Girl Scouts replaces societal limits with the knowledge that you are limitless. You are strong and beautiful and you can do whatever

you want. You feel so strongly about the support you get in Girl Scouts that you want to be a part of that support yourself.” It’s clear that Tori has a vision of what she wants in her own life. She intends pursue a college degree in psychology or counseling and work with children.

“You are strong and beautiful and you can do whatever you want.” Tori also knows that she wants to inspire girls in middle school to stay with Girl Scouts and feel the life-long impact. She considered leaving Girl Scouts in middle school because “it wasn’t cool. But when I was with my troop, I was in a group that loved me for me, not what I represented or did. Girls need experiences like that more often.”

Tori has experienced tremendous personal growth in Girl Scouts and has learned that the connections she’s made and making could influence her life. As a member of the Board of Directors, Tori met “incredible people and develop maturity as she saw behind the scenes what it takes to make Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council successful.” As a Board member, Tori visited Girl Scout troops and had exposure to all levels and ages of girls who were going through the stages of scouting she had already experienced. Tori thoroughly enjoyed being part of Board dialog that shapes the council in short and long-term business decisions. “Learning about the council budget inspired me to understand the importance of creating a budget. I began making a personal budget at home.”

What does the next year in Girl Scouts hold for this remarkable young woman? Tori has been selected as a delegate to the National Girl Scout Convention in Salt Lake City in October 2014. She’ll have the chance to share ideas and dialog with delegates from 112 Girl Scout councils in the

US. “I’m thrilled to go to the national convention and represent Girl Scouts of Silver Sage” she gushes. This comes during her senior year in a tough academic environment as she’s also working towards her Gold Award. But this is Tori. She’s got this.
