Idaho families

come in all different forms, but there is one family so outside the frame that in 2011 Mayor David Bieter declared September 25 a Boise holiday in their name. On September 25 of each year, the large, blended, bi-racial, foster/adoptive, special needs, military family celebrated Roberts’ Family Day with a BBQ and photo album.

It all started when Roberts met her husband Jeff on a blind date. For their second date, Jeff asked both her and her one-and-ahalf-year-old daughter Alexandra out. That was it. “When you know, you know,” Roberts says, explaining how they got married in her parents’ back yard exactly three months after they met.

“I never imagined this would be my life.

Jeff adopted Alexandra, and the couple chose to have another child soon after. Now none of us can imagine Both thought their family was complete when Savannah our life any other way.” was born, however, a year later, they decided to try Lisa Roberts, the mother of this diverse once more for a boy. The day Roberts group, tells their story through laughter, arrived home from the hospital with their tears, and multiple phone calls from the third daughter Saige, she found a message five different schools her children attend. “I on her answering machine concerning never imagined this would be my life,” says a child from Haiti who needed a home. Roberts, “but now none of us can imagine The timing wasn’t right, but the call got our life any other way.” her thinking about adopting a mixedrace child so that Alexandra wouldn’t be the only African-American in their home.

Two years later a friend started caring for foster children. Roberts thought the idea was crazy, but as soon as her friend brought home the first baby, Havyn, Roberts became the crazy one.

son tested positive for Down syndrome,” she cried tears of joy at the idea of keeping him. The years that followed taxed their fortitude with extreme medical needs and intense time commitment. Today Jack is a healthy eight-year-old. “He is the angel of our family. He is our lifeline. Every single one of his siblings have a protective nature toward him. And he is a little stinker, beyond stinker. An absolute blessing.” Jeff is the one who chose to take in their next child. Chase was Havyn’s four-year-old brother who the Roberts knew nothing about until he started showing up with Havyn’s biological mother at her visitation meetings. When the state took Chase away from his

mom, the Roberts took him in. This experience was emotional, with the biological family stepping into the picture, then stepping back out after only a month. Roberts didn’t wait for the kids to be brought back to her. She got on a plane and flew to Washington to pick them up herself. For some children, the Roberts home has become home after 25 different foster placements. Choices are a journey of life. And in 2008, Jeff decided to pursue a life-long dream of joining the military. He served in Iraq for about 18 months. Today when their house starts to get crazy, she jokes to Jeff, “You can always go back to Iraq. I’m sure it’s quieter there.”

18

Roberts looks back in amazement at all they’ve been through and looks with pride at their new family photos showing how far they’ve come. She claims their unique mix worked for them because it happened when the kids were young and it happened fast. “All they know is a big, crazy family. And they love it.”

Wisdom:

When asked what she has learned through growing such a diverse family, Roberts shares the four pieces of advice that helped her the most:

Get your kids active. Help them find something that excites them and gives them individuality.

Schedule everything.

Even your shower if necessary.

Go with the flow. Because life

doesn’t stay on schedule. (Her original desire to keep their house looking perfect and her girls wearing bows in their hair flew out the window a long time ago).

Keep pictures from adoption day

and talk about it freely.

Q:

What is a cold remedy that you use in your home?

Brandi W Lee - We use Emergen-C packs. I send them to school with my daughter, and I love essential oils too. Herbal Wellness tea with echinacea and good sleep. Rhonda Walker - YL essential oils, herbal teas, and local honey. Michelle Anderson - At the first sign of cold, I brew a double-strength

batch of Stash Lemon-Ginger tea along with: 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed, two dashes of cayenne pepper and sweeten with enough local honey to be able to get it down (swallow it).

Janice Christensen - We use Juice Plus to prevent colds which has worked well for us. For treatment, lukewarm baths to break fevers and lots of LOVE!

Jenifer Cavaness-Williams - Baking soda for skin conditions and stings; honey for throats; candied ginger for upset tummies. I still remember how heavenly it was to sit in a bath with baking soda when I had the Chicken Pox. It was the ONLY time I wasn’t itchy! Mandie Metier - We use our Melaleuca Vitality Packs to keep us healthy year round and Activate-C when we are feeling a little down to help build us back up. When a cold settles in we drink Melaleuca Herbal Tea and use Melaleuca oil rubbed on the chest, on the feet, behind the ears, dropped in the ears with a carrier oil and in the humidifier with Solumel.

Thankfully, last year was our healthiest year by concentrating on prevention and good health! The Vitality Packs are amazing supplements from Melaleuca that you pick which level you need based on your own health needs, my husband uses Vitality Total and I use Vitality 4, my kiddos use the Vitality for kids.

Emily Christensen Barker - We load up on Vitamin D, Vitamin C and

probiotics to support our immune system and suck on elderberry zinc drops. Epsom salt baths are a great way to sweat out the toxins. We also eliminate all sugar as it really suppresses your immune system!

EACH MONTH,

GEM STATE FAMILY BRINGS YOU THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE LISTS OF USEFUL RESOURCES, BASED ON OUR MONTHLY THEMES.

October’s theme is:

Hot Chocolate

The LIST:

October

BEST HOT CHOCOLATES for the fall season: This month’s theme is Fall Fun. Gem State Family thought it would be a great idea to gather a list of Hot Chocolates for the Fall season. Guittard Grand Cocoa Drinking Chocolate: On the pricier side, this cocoa is slightly spicy with a very dark color and tastes like fine dark chocolate. The only problem is that the powder doesn’t melt all the way, so if you don’t like to waste this one may not be for you. Godiva Hot Cocoa: One of the best instant hot chocolates with a smooth milk chocolate flavor. Also available in the dark chocolate that is for the more refined tastes due to the hint of bitter dark chocolate flavor. The milk chocolate version is slightly on the sweeter side. Ghiradelli Double Chocolate: When you hear Ghiradelli you automatically think chocolate. World-renowned for their chocolate, Ghiradelli’s Double Chocolate Hot Cocoa is just like drinking a melted chocolate bar and has that classic hot chocolate taste. A perennial favorite. Sarabeth’s Hot Chocolate Parisienne: Looking for something other than the classic brands of hot chocolate? This is one unique variety that gives you the great chocolate taste with just a hint of orange flavoring. It is a little on the rich side but not too overwhelming.

365 Organic Rich Chocolate: There’s something for everyone when the cold weather hits. This organic hot chocolate is not what you’re expecting when you have a cup of cocoa. It has that real chocolate flavor with some coconut undertones. Slightly watery, but expected with organic ingredients. Dagoba Xocotatl: Something more exotic than just normal hot chocolate. This fashionable favorite is not for the feint of heart. It has very spicy flavoring of cinnamon, chili, and cherries. If you’re wanting to interesting party conversation this is the cocoa to choose. Green and Black’s Hot Chocolate: A funky blend of chocolate and spices that give this hot chocolate a unique, woodsy taste. Once again though, this variety is organic and can be slightly watery, but is another alternative for having your hot chocolate and not feeling guilty later. Woodhouse Chocolate Hot Chocolate: This is a genuine chocolatier with a hot chocolate product. This brand has the straight up chocolate taste with a rich finish and isn’t too overbearing. Stephen’s Hot Chocolate: A personal favorite, Stephen’s hot chocolate reminds me of being in a log cabin in winter all wrapped up in blankets in front of a fire with someone special. A smooth finish that takes just a small amount of mix to make up a big, rich flavor. Valor Cocoa: And for you sugar-free folks, I haven’t forgotten about you. You will still be able to enjoy some delicious hot chocolate while refraining from sugar. It is sweetened with maltitol and acesulfame-K, but still tastes like the hot chocolate you love and expect.

A native of Idaho, Connie wasn’t easy. Her family didn’t promote Miller came from a family the idea, so despair nearly got the best bulging with six children but of her. As a junior in college, Miller was a slim bank account. It wasn’t doing the bookkeeping for her parents‘ an easy path. The hand-me-downs, business, she was working at BSU counting pennies, or going without is a auditing department, cleaning several memory that stuck. Beyond that, there houses, babysitting, and doing anything was the school yard teasing that is else she could to earn her way. She felt always overpowering when you don’t beaten and determined against the have what the other students had. With a young and tender “I owe a great deal to lack of confidence, it was as the Girl Scouts. They a brownie in Girl Scouts that accepted me.” Miller found her second home. “I could go to Girl Scouts any day of the week and I felt accepted, loved, and there was no sense of cliques” Miller says. Miller’s family was so hard working that education was a secondary consideration. The idea of college was a far away thought that could easily be pushed aside without family disappointments. However, because of her Senior Troop Leader, Mrs. Kadel, Miller forged a new plan. “I remember the conversation very clearly” Miller says, “Mrs. Kadel told me, ‘Connie you’re so smart. You should go to college. You can do it.” Mrs. Kadel encouraged the young Connie toward accounting because she was good with numbers. Miller attended Boise State and achieved her degree in Accounting. It

Miller interviewed for several jobs and captured several offers. “One of the jobs I interviewed for was as the accountant for Girl Scouts. Even with offers from large corporations offering more money, travel, and by all appearances, a better life style, I chose Girl Scouts. They had given me so much that I wanted a chance to give back.” Miller served in her position for many years and today is the President of the Girl Scouts Silver Sage Council Board. “I owe a great deal to the Girl Scouts. They accepted me. My financial situation was

never an issue. They were instrumental in me going to college.” Today, Miller is the President and CEO of Icon Credit Union. A position she would not have had without the encouragement of an organization devoted to young women. “What I really love about Girl Scouts, is that it provides an environment of safety so that women can focus on progress.”

Possessing an attitude of gratitude, Connie has a special place in her heart for lifting girls. Her hopes are that every girl in America gets the opportunities she had, to ensure her participation continues to advocate for a safe place for girls to be productive. She believes in giving more than she receives. Simply from her love and appreciation, Miller bypassed better paying jobs to work for the local Girl Scouts and today she remains active in the same organization. Her love did the right thing when no one was looking.

Conjuring Classroom

Confidence

More than 30% of one’s life is spent in classrooms.

270 days of the year are spent dragging a pencil across lined paper and waiting in suspense for the school bell to ring, symbolizing the day is over. Students spend, on average, 14,145 hours at school, and this is before college even begins. Getting through these hours at any age can be rough, but the secret of success lies in one little factor—confidence.

Discipline , patience , and balancing time and energy

are the challenging components of playing a sport, but also the components to building the right amount of confidence to play in the game of good grades. Ask students what makes them confident in class and a variety of answers will be heard, but all laser in on confidence.

The most important factor

of feeling confident in class is to understand the material. Reading the material or attempting to complete all the assignments will assure students that they will not be sitting in their seats looking out of sorts when discussion or quiz time arrive. Some students are known to blow off homework assignments and readings, but these are the same students hanging their heads behind closed doors in shame, feeling less confident than ever before.

33

Isla Brazzil

There are more than 7 hours

behind a school desk in a day. A student’s performance in the classroom is related directly to peer interaction and satisfaction, and most of all, self-confidence. The world of books seem meaningless, but when college approaches there is nothing sweeter than looking back at those twelve years knowing that they were not only successful years but instilled confidence for college. According to Robert Rosedale, expert in academic coaching and owner of Tutor Doctor in Meridian, students who believe they have the ability to complete a particular academic task do better and have higher levels of motivation. Students often sabotage their academic performance by engaging in negative self-talk about their abilities and by making faulty attributions to explain poor academic performance.

“I work with many struggling yet motivated students in the Treasure Valley. Students don’t struggle because they lack aptitude or intelligence. They struggle when they lack confidence. I wish more parents could see the changes of having

GEM STATE FAMILY www.gemstatefamily.com

an academic coach for their student that includes building confidence. The changes are drastic and rapid. When students struggle in academics, they disengage and discouragement sets in. I’ve seen academic coaches change that.”

It doesn’t have to be like this... Improve Confidence, Study Skills & Grades Experienced & Qualified Tutors All Grades & Subjects

Sports have their oaths, academics have their outcomes. The saying goes, fake it till you make it. Confidence thrives on honesty, honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live.
