through being a holiday decor fanatic herself, Maria has tried and true tips on nontraditional and creative ways to decorate your home for the season:
T hi nk ou tsi d e t he t r ee.
The holiday season is finally here, which means it’s time for Christmas cookie baking, gift shopping, and. . . holiday d ecorating! This year, don’t go through the sameold, been there done that routine of putting up the white icicle lights and calling it a day--add creative and festive holiday cheer to your home by decorating it in a nontraditional way! InStyleModern.com Executive Maria Samuels has the scoop on exciting and unique ways to decorate your house for the holidays. Through her experience in researching trends for InStyleModern.com and
If your house is too small for a tree or you simply can’t stand the mess, you can still decorate to the max without one. For example, hang garland on the railings and put a crèche on the mantle. Another option is a wall or door tree that you either create yourself (for example, made from holiday cards, or just holiday lights laid out in the shape of a tree) or you can buy a flat half wall tree to hang. Another option is to hang lights on taller plants or tree twigs/branches.
Use only what you want. Don’t feel like every ornament needs to go on the tree simply because the kids love them. Look at the ones you like and purposefully place them on the tree, as this will provide a cleaner,
more streamlined look. Change up the theme every year with groupings of ornaments (made by the kids, travel souvenirs, grandma’s ornaments, photo ornaments only, etc.)
Spr ead c heer t hroughou t you r house. We get to the point where we go on autopilot once the holiday decorations come out. We know exactly what goes where because it’s been that way every year. Time to change it up! Add a holiday candle to the bathroom, add some garland to your bed frame, no reason to limit the joy of the season to just one or two rooms.
Whit e, whit e, whit e! Decking the halls with clean and white decorations will be very popular this year. Choose white linens, white china, white candles. It’s a great way to give your holiday decor a more sophisticated twist.
Let t he k i d s d ecor at e. A fun afternoon craft project for the kiddos. Let them choose what they want to make, wreaths, star, snowman, Santa drawings or cutouts, a snowman centerpiece, etc. Get the supplies and let them have some fun!
Go natu r al . Decorate with pine cones, nuts, and other decorations that nature provides. They can be store-bought or straight from the outdoors, such as branches, leaves, and birch bark from your backyard. You can even make your centerpiece out of natural supplies!
A d d C hr i st m as lights i nsi d e. Don’t just put up dazzling holiday lights outside--wrap a string of Christmas lights around the stair banister and hang up lights in the living room. They really dress up a mantle too! Holiday lights will help bring colorful and festive cheer to any room in your home!
Hand -m ak e you r own d ecor ations. Traditional decorations like dreidels or Christmas tree ornaments become
nontraditional when you add your own unique touch. Use your favorite colors, add glitter, glue on sequins, or don’t. Whatever way you create your decorations, they will definitely be one-of-a-kind.
No suc h t hi ng as C hr i st m as color s.
Christmas colors are beginning to be ‘anything goes,’ such as purple, gold, silver, pink, and brown. If red doesn’t do it for you, choose a color that does. Find a place that you can really make your new color pop, such as the shiny ornaments on your tree or the accent candles on the table.
Do it you r way.
The most important thing to remember during the holidays is there is no right or wrong way to decorate. If you love purple, use purple! If snowmen are your thing, go crazy with the snowmen! Traditional or not, it is your home. Decorate it in whatever way makes you happy!

Another Leader in Love shared by the Girl Scouts Silver Sage Council is Kim Ivacek. Ivacek is the director of Advocates Against Family Violence (AAFV), aka, Hope’s Door. There mission is to address and pursue the elimination of family violence. “I am a survivor, and this is my life’s passion” says Ivacek. In a ‘now is the time’ approach, Ivacek is passionate, “I want to work together with Girl Scouts in developing ways to work with troops, encourage and teach healthy relationship, and create projects that work together.” Young girls have many opportunities to serve. There are schools, church, social activities, and civic volunteer work. For teens, the world moves and changes fast. Instilling a strong self worth is difficult when being squeezed among all the data young minds absorb. A lack of self esteem and personal value can lead to other trouble.

According to Ivacek, 50 percent of men who hit their partners also abuse their children. Women who are abused are 50 percent more likely to hit or abuse their children. “This is alarming data,” she says, “an alliance with Girl Scouts can offer opportunity to support positive self images to decrease family violence.”

Girl Scouts is providing tools to educate as well as opening opportunities to have young women work with others who present positive life choices. That can be through the Girl Scouts cookie sales, CEO Camp, summer camp programs, and area partnerships that are supported. In these various programs, young women have the opportunity to

For their future
THE UlTIMATE GIFT CARD Isla Brazzil
The Holidays are truly the busiest time of the year.
Santa dutifully fills the children’s stockings with presents while families hustle to grab the holiday cheer. As the world steps into a vast increase of technological upgrades by companies like Apple and Xbox, it is no wonder that adults are in a pickle with what to purchase this year. It is becoming difficult for society to see the line between helpful and hurtful with increased use and privilege of giving children technology. To combat this very issue, education expert, Robert Rosedale, with Tutor Doctor says educational gifts are among the top choices for parents, “The question today is are computer programs and education gift cards profiting a child’s learning growth, or would the money be more effective in the form of a tutoring service? Rosedale also says providing an educational line of credit is optimum for a student’s future. “In the days beyond high school, a student’s self-esteem will be connected to their ability to be financially independent. Offering an education gift today means better ability in the future.” If that doesn’t tempt parents for their child’s future, Rosedale says, there are other alternatives. TheGiftofEducation.com

create savings plans for a child’s higher education, which allows donations to be added as gifts to the cause. Buying a gift card in denominations of $25, $50, $75, or $100 makes it simple for friends and family to contribute easily to a child or student. In the squeeze between more technology or looking for alternatives, Rosedale says,
“providing an educational line of credit is optimum for a student’s future.” “Machines simply can’t establish personal relationships tailored to the individual student’s personality, learning style and academic foundation. While machines have brought a student a long way in educational access, students still need genuine motivation and encouragement to be able to bridge the two gaps. It takes a human being to do that.” In a recent report, the Alliance for Childhood detailed the potential hazards of computer use among young children. The report concluded that an overreliance on computers can give rise to losing natural creativity, hampered social skills, and health effects such as eyestrain and obesity.

This is yet another reason to have face-to-face interactions. Educational coaches paired with technology is the perfect accomplice to build and maintain the ideal educational structure for families. If it deems fit for the child, then tutoring and educational gift cards will be stuffing the stocking with knowledge this year. Before personal computers swam their way into the average American households, parents used to beam with pride when their child built a volcano out of clay, but things have changed. America’s youth are ready to collide this season with old and new.
Tutor Doctor’s Bob Rosedale is passionate about providing students the academic coaching they need to succeed. He is a retired USAF Colonel and Command Pilot who took his experience training over 500 USAF pilots and brought it to youth education. To schedule a free consultation contact Bob at 208.922.6416

It’s difficult to get information out of students about their school life, and it’s especially frustrating when there is an obvious problem like declining grades or changes in behavior. Serious situations call for experts in a different field, but many of the common issues can be warded off by asking good questions. A conversation with Robert Rosedale, academic coach and and esteem builder at Tutor Doctor yielded some eye opening results. The chart on the next page shows good questions on the left side, common questions that parents might ask their child. However, on the right side, there are better questions that can generate dialog.

According to Robert Rosedale, a couple keys to healthy grades are study skills and esteem building or confidence in school. “Questions that result in a yes or no response fail to give parents the insight they’re seeking.” Rosedale said a student’s support system should have confidence builders or people that work with them as confidence builders in academics. “These pieces are closely related, and I’ve seen it over and over.” he said, “Once a parents engages someone to work on their child’s academic problems, you often find through open ended questions that a student may not have connected to a specific way of being taught or felt embarrassed by repeatedly asking for help.” Once the information is known, parents can make adjustments or get extra support for their child outside of school. “For a student, it’s pretty empowering to have your own academic coach.”
