Should You

Be Screening Your Health? Nicole Holten

The idea of "well-being" is big business nowadays. With the amazing technology that is easily accessible, we’ve become much more proactive regarding our own health. We check our own blood pressure while waiting in line at the local pharmacy, we do a free eye-check to make sure we can still see straight, and every six months we get postcards in the mail to remind us we're due for a dental visits and women’s health check-ups. Regular screening is important because it allows you to be aware of any risk factors at an early stage. Many of these tests can serve as a wake-up call. Early screenings have saved lives. One of the most important tests, according to the American Heart Association, is the heart health screening test. “Cardiovascular health is critically important to your overall well being," explains Wayne Faw, expert of the Cardio Test Center in Meridian. “Your cardiovascular system is designed to provide your limbs and vital organs with the necessary ingredients for life – oxygen and nutrition. The less your heart pumps, the less oxygen is delivered to other organs which may have an adverse affect on your health.”

“Many of these tests can serve as a wake-up call. Early screenings have saved lives.”

For those looking to be proactive in their own heart health, the Cardio Test Center specializes in cardiovascular testing with a non-invasive screening. "It's an easy test, but can give an indication if your heart beats too slow, carrying less oxygen, or too fast indicating premature aging of the heart." According to Faw, a lack of oxygen can result in a lack of energy, memory loss, and a poor immune system." Faw's cardio test measures the blood’s pulse rate and strength through a noninvasive Pulse Wave machine. One of the reasons why we don’t often sign up voluntarily for many of these health tests is because they involve needles, out-patient care, or are uncomfortably invasive. The Pulse Wave Test is none of these things, and yet will give you a clear understanding of the health of your heart. Wouldn’t it be nice to know how your heart is functioning? Screening tests, such as mammograms, Pap smears, and cardiovascular testing, can find diseases and conditions early when they are easier to treat. Making a small investment into screening can lend peace of mind and arm you with knowledge when talking with your doctor. Faw recommends talking to your doctor about which of the tests are right for you and when you should have them. iwj

Detroit’s Bankruptcy

FLYING HIGH STOCK MARKET Dini Harris • Harris Financial Advisors / KMS Financial Services, Inc.

The Motor City, a global symbol of innovation, modernity and American Capitalism is out of gas. The city of Detroit has filed for bankruptcy. Yet, the stock market is still driving to all time highs. Here's the big money question: Should an investor continue to put money into a retirement plan, IRA, their 401k, 403b,

Our natural reaction to securing wealth might be to wrap it up, pull it close, and hold tight.

Our natural reaction to securing wealth might be to wrap it up, pull it close, and hold tight. The children of the great depression, those kids who grew up in bread lines, buried their coins in old coffee cans, hid cash in the walls of their homes, and concealed their wealth within common everyday items. Because of those years of struggle they reacted emotionally from what they had experienced.

If you are just getting started in saving and investing for retirement, a mutual fund may be the best way to reduce some of this risk. As money grows you may look to spreading into several individual stocks to provide variety. There is also power in time and investing, but procrastination will cost you this advantage. Starting now, however small, be consistent and let your money work. There are options available to get started investing as low as 25 dollars per month. Lastly, seek advice from people you know and trust. If you are looking to find a professional that can help, seek a second opinion, and maybe even a third until your investment philosophies are aligned.

There is also power in time and investing, but procrastination will cost you this advantage.

Use your heart for giving, not for investing. Sadly, this is where most investment errors happen. Making investment decisions with the heart or out of fear rather than solid fundamental and technical analysis like financials, charts, and trends can have costly results. For example, historically, over the long term, stocks have outperformed www.idahowomensjournal.com

Although it is near impossible to determine exactly what will happen in the market and how that will affect the nation or even the world, consistency patterns can be found. In order to have some sort of consistency when trading stocks, it is important to continue to analyze market trends and understand what they mean. Next, go back to the basics and diversify. The old clichĂŠ for eggs in many baskets is still true today. Having the number of baskets that a well diversified portfolio provides helps to minimize volatility and is certainly less risky than concentrating on just one investment.

or Real Estate? Or would a smart investor purchase gold and silver coins to bury in the back yard? Many sensed this Detroit bankruptcy headline would be coming. Nevertheless, news of a once great city unable to pay its own bills certainly doesn't encourage people to set aside a part of their hard-earned cash into investments.

Here in 2013, society is still reeling from a great recession, watching great cities go belly up. So, how does a smart investor make choices in a time filled with such events and emotions?

Know your goals, review them often, and then have the commitment to stay the course. With discipline in planning and sticking to principals, choices about savings and retirement will be a little less challenging.iwj Sept/Oct 2013

Barbara Rudin

An Accountant and 9 Year Breast Cancer Survivor

Barbara Rudin says frankly, “I may have been meant to have cancer because she is not afraid to open up and tell her story.” She is an accountant by career choice, and she played the odds even in the face of physical threat. Just six months after her father’s death from bladder cancer in 2004, Barbara Rudin was faced with her own breast cancer diagnosis. Feeling her family was still reeling from the loss of their patriarch, Barbara’s first comment to her doctor was, “And how do you suggest I tell my mom this?”

profile

Meanwhile, life was still taking place in her Arizona household. She was still working and even moved into a new house. She and the rest of her family still worked through the loss of her father.

Not every situation has a simple end. After Christmas in 2004 Barb underwent her second surgery, and a sentinel node biopsy. A sentinel node biopsy is when the doctor injects a blue dye or special tracer substance or both into the area around the original cancer site. The dye or tracer moves to the first lymph node (sentinel node) that drains close to the cancer site. The dye or tracer makes a map pattern of lymphatic fluid. The map then can show where the cancer is likely to spread and which lymph node is most likely to have cancer cells.

Rudin says, “Get a mammogram.” The numbers don’t lie.

At age 30 Rudin was living in Phoenix and had her first mammogram on a whim after her friend was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Barbara’s results were negative, or no cancer in layman terms. Her doctor advised her that her breast tissue was too dense and they would not need to see her until she was 40. At 44, Rudin was tested. Over the long Thanksgiving weekend in 2004 she received a letter indicating her mammogram was abnormal and she would need more tests. On a weekend that was meant to be spent celebrating, Barb was instead spiritless. On her next visit to the doctor she had an ultrasound and a biopsy was ordered. By the time Rudin got home, her doctor had already made her appointment. Ruden heard the words, “You have cancer.” In her straight forward style she told the doctor of her father’s passing and asked him what to tell her Mother. The doctor sat in silence. The doctor’s discussion for treatment jumped to a mastectomy for a one-centimeter tumor. He encouraged plastic surgery is she chose, but Ruden wouldn’t be pushed into a decision. She went home and shortly after consulted with another doctor, her father’s Oncologist. The Oncologist gave her the best advice to that point. He referred Rudin to a breast surgeon. The breast surgeon took his time with her and educated her on her form of breast cancer. Taking control of the moment, Barb put the breast surgeon on the spot and asked point blank, “What would you do if it was your wife?” His counsel lead her path. The surgeon would go back in, explore around the tumor bed, map the tumor margins to know exactly which spot in the area may still be affected by the cancer. This method prevented unnecessary cutting and loss of body tissue. www.idahowomensjournal.com

Your doctor can see the dye or tracer with a special device. The lymph node can be taken out, cut into very thin slices, and looked at under a microscope at the time of surgery. She had 4 sentinel lymph nodes removed. She would have additional treatments and now knowing her prognosis was more positive, Barbara decided to share the information with her Mom. With reports in hand, Rudin talked to her mother. She was able to deliver the news that her daughter had breast cancer but all the damaged tissue had been removed. She still had several weeks of radiation treatments and wanted her mother included. With a mother’s love Rudin was scolded for not telling her what was happening. But for six and a half weeks, five days a week, Rudin’s mother was vigilant. Mother drove daughter to every treatment and caring for Rudin with the tenderness of a doting mother. Rudin is steady, sturdy, and was the last person friends would suspect had health issues. Barbara kept an active lifestyle that included organic foods and plenty of excercise. She has been active with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure long before being diagnosed with the disease, and continues to participate each year since moving to Boise five years ago. In jest, Rudin notes that the year she did not participate in the Race for the Cure is the year she was diagnosed with cancer. Sept/Oct 2013

She wears her pink shirt to the gym, the grocery store, and as many places as she can. It helps to start a dialog so that she can share her story with others and get them thinking about their own health screening. Rudin is a breast cancer survivor. When asked what her most important message is, Rudin says, “Get a mammogram.” The numbers don’t lie. Research shows that early detection can dramatically increase chances of survival. And true to the accountant in Rudin, who sees life in simple calculatons, she says a lumpectomy and radiation are preferred over chemotherapy and mastectomies. iwj

Other tips

Look for leaders: If they lead, most likely they're going somewhere. You should be on that itinerary. Be memorable: Find something that makes you stand out. It might be in wearing a certain brioche or a color, or it might be in always having a gift in your pocket. Follow up: At some point the goal is to capture leads. So for heaven's sake, follow up with them. Resist the clique: Don't look for revenue through the same 10 people you've become attached to. Look around, sit in other places, and have new conversations. Contribute: Be purposeful. Not to sell your wares, but intentional to contribute. Share knowledge, appreciation, ideas, strength, or leadership, but share who you are, where you are.iwj www.idahowomensjournal.com
