With a young and tender lack of confidence, it was as a brownie in Girl Scouts that Connie Miller found her second home. “I could go to Girl Scouts any day of the week and I felt accepted, loved, and there was no sense of cliques.” Miller says.

Michelle Murray: Girl Scout Volunteer Extraordinaire
Girl Scout Silver Sage Council
Michelle Murray is a Girl Scout volunteer extraordinaire. She uses her natural talents and she gifts the young women of our organization with her service. She is an entrepreneur with enough energy and enthusiasm to run two businesses at a time, which is good because her second ”business” is not for profit, it’s for love. Her first business is a company named Love to Stand Up Paddle Boards, aka Love2SUP, where Murray leads an affordable way for Idaho to experience the fun and fitness of paddle boarding. Making it affordable is simply another piece proving her heart doesn’t fall far from her work. Her leadership in love is internal and reached deep and wide. Michelle has been an integral part of Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council for years. She has Michelle Murray

programs of Girl Scouts. They have stayed with the same troop for years now and the troop leaders and girls are deep friends, supporting each other through the ups and downs of life, ce le brating e ach othe r ’s
As to why Murray herself got involved at an adult, She said it began with her “bonus daughter,” Hailey. She coined the step-child term because Hailey was a “bonus” to the love of her life, her husband, Tyler. Murray noticed Hailey was focused and goal oriented, and Girl Scouts was the path to connect the beauty of both with yet another benefit, a way for all her daughters to join forces. Murray has three daughters, and they are all passionate about the

from business owners and leaders throughout the community.
“The ample leadership, entrepreneur training, and opportunities that the girls receive are outstanding,” said Murray, “Older girls have a chance to mentor younger girls and make a positive change in their own lives and the greater community.”
“There is a great need for girls to have women role models,” Murray said, “and Girl Scouts provides the perfect partnership for women who want to give back and young women who want to grow.”
To echo this opinion, Girl Scouts will launch a one-day CEO Camp where young women can learn

Through this connection to each other and to community, both the girls and the

adult volunteers grow stronger. When looking at highlights of her leadership, Murray shines when she speaks of her leadership role in the awards ceremony in partnership with the Idaho Women’s Journal held in October 2013. “We had a room filled with business women and Girl Scout members and leaders. We were able to focus in and recognize more than a dozen Girl Scout volunteers and young

entrepreneurs who are inspiring.” Much to her surprise, Murray was also recognized at the event as an Idaho Women’s Journal 2013 Woman of Influence. Another highlight, in 2012, she helped organize a Girl Scout camping event, Jubilation, that drew 1400 campers! Her love of event planning in sync with natural talent was shared with the many young women. Her collaborative team of adults and young women put into
practice their social skills, project management, creativity, leadership, trouble shooting, and heart to produce a very successful event. There are many reasons people get involved. Murray’s involvement has tipped the scales of heart and wholesomeness. She has created powerful bonds and always leaves the door open to continue in her leadership in love.

Scoring with School THE ATHLETE’S DILEMMA
Isla Brazzil
With school back in session, young athletes may find themselves trying to balance the demands of their sport with their academics. The challenge is – how to prioritize the two and what to do when things feel out of balance? Participating in sports builds life skills that come in handy, one in particular that isn’t always emphasized or even noticed, multitasking. At a young age, children are forced to balance the competitive nature of a sport and the stresses of games, practices, and conditioning alongside schoolwork, tests, and class.

Rosedale is an expert in what student athletes endure. “I see a lot of students and a healthy percentage of them are high performing students in athletics and other extracurricular activities.” He adds, “The “It’s about Some research shows amount of pressure and being proactive, that athletes tend to executive management have better grades skills needed by these efficient and and are more likely to disciplined in all students to not just go on to college, but make it, but exceed it aspects of the it is important to keep high. many forms, but looking at the schedule one should be able to get a grip on what needs to be done to succeed successfully on and off the field or court. What hasn’t been mentioned yet is a student athlete’s social life. A student athlete is expected to also relax and enjoy their own down time amidst the chaos and competitiveness of everyday expectations. It is easy to forget that beyond taking on as much as they do, they are still adolescents who need to have fun socially. “The best way to balance these competing interests is to get good at establishing and executing strong routines and habits. It’s about being proactive, efficient and disciplined in all aspects of the student’s life. On the sport’s field, coaches guide the student athlete in these areas. The question is: who is guiding the student in these areas off of the field and how is the student being held accountable?” Rosedale said. Communicating with parents and teachers allows the student to be up front with what they have going on in their lives. Teachers often are sympathetic when they learn about a sports game coming up or big tournament stress, and it helps both teacher and student understand how they can meet the student’s needs as well. There is nothing worse than being overwhelmed when competing at a high level competitive sport, but the thrill outweighs the negatives. Doing what a student loves is part of the thrill of high performers, and doing well in class only multiplies their intensity for the game. Many times coaches check grades of students to ensure grades and play time are straight. To get a well rounded education, having a tutor like Tutor Doctor on the team just might be the right thing to hold and not pass on.
