QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED BY PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY

Q:

ARE YOU A BOX DYE

AT HOME KIND OF GAL OR PROFESSIONAL ALL THE WAY? [ Question asked by Bri Clark on Facebook 3/11/2014 ]

DONNA FOSTER - Professional...I’d flub it up myself. MARY CUNNINGHAM JOHNSON - Dye at home...never had salon color in 25 years.

BETHANIE LEE - I’m a cheap a$%&. RAINA LORRING - Box at home.

I cut and thin my own hair too.

GINA DOWNING HALLAM - I was

ANDREA EMILIEN “Box at home”

a box kind of girl, but after last year’s attempt at getting a perm, I won’t do box kits again. I’ll get it done professionally.

BRENNA FORREY - All my hair needs are taken care of by

my personal hair stylist. (Personal because I won’t go to anyone else, not because I’m her only client).

DESLYN O’DELL - Salon dye, I am no good at it and I love the pampering.

CHRISTINE ASHWORTH - I’ve done both, and it totally depends on how my cash fluidity is going.

DUCKNKIA ANVILKIN “Neither... I don’t dye or bleach.”

WRITER SHELLY GOODMAN-WRIGHT

- Professional! Once I did the box and ended up orange. My husband called me pumpkin head.

SHERYL ARONSON STEINES - Professional. I was

getting tired of repainting my bathroom each time I did my hair. Dark hair color shows up on everything.

EVE PALUDAN - Box dye. Have several times spent over

$100 at a salon, only to be horrified by the results. No one does it right. Only me! I LOVE a brand called FAT FOAM!

BRI CLARK - Michele [Kafton] does

LAURIE BAXTER

ALEXANDRA HEEP - I have to do

“I’m too chicken to try it myself. I go get it done.”

mine. She’s the bomb. I have done box before but I prefer salon.

mine at home because of health issues. So, the answer is box, but I used to do professional.

MAUREEN O. BETITA - I’m a no dye lady! Love my silver hair...

DEENA GOOD ANDERSON

SHANNON JONES JANECZEK -

Box dye_however, I’m thinking I need to start with the chunking/highlights which I cannot do at home (well, anyway).

“Profesh.”

LOUISA BACIO - Totally professional, and everyone always

asks how I do it, and I tell them I DON’T.

JULIE KROGER BAUKE - Profesh, then box touch up dying of roots in between.

LINDA VANDERLAAN TUCKER - Professional. I used to do it myself, then I grew up. You can have weird funky hair when you are young; not when you are a professional.

VELLA MUNN - Box dye. I’m cheap. BRIANNE CHASON - Amen, Vella! Let’s see_$10 for at-home treatments, or $50-$60+ at a professional. At these prices, buy 2 boxes and retouch what you missed the first time, and you still pay a fraction of the price.

RACHEL JONES KURTZ - I never put any

color on my hair until I was in my 40s. I tried lightening it myself but didn’t like it. Now I have a pro do a partial weave, 1 shade lighter, 1 shade darker...I only need to do it twice a year. I love my stylist, Kayla Miller at Nancy Janes!

MELISSA SESLER INGRAM - Both, it depends on the cash flow...

NIYA SUDDARTH - I’ve always done box, but after 2 years of dying roots my hair is damaged pretty bad. Had it done professional first time this past weekend and I will do what I have to to afford it every couple of months. Plus you can get root spray to spray away the greys until your next appointment. I will try it out. I just bought brown spray.

MAUREEN LOMANDO “$8 every 3 weeks at home, thank you very much!”

ASPEN MORROW - Neither...I am

an all-natural Idaho chick who has a green canoe as a fourth child and could care less what my hair looks like after a week in the woods.

HER SMILE The dedication and postitive infl uence of Lori Fascilla Maureen O’Toole Meet Lori Fascilla, Executive Director of Giraffe Laugh who has devoted her life to working with children as a teacher, Girl Scout Troop leader, and as the director of Giraffe Laugh. Warm, friendly and visionary, Lori radiates a commitment to leading from her heart. Lori’s heart is as big her smile and she draws you in with her positive attitude and high energy. You can only imagine the incredible influence she’s had on thousands of girls in Idaho.

Lori radiates a commitment to leading from her heart. Lori became a Troop Leader for Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council when her daughters were Girl Scouts and, with the characteristic enthusiasm that spills into everything she does,

Lori went to camp every year and raised money for troop activities. Lori rolled up her sleeves and served as camp “nurse” during troop camping and encouraged her husband and son to participate, too.

By engaging the girls at all levels, they create life-long bonds, memories and connections. Equally at home in the forest and the city, Lori says that the most exciting troop experience was a the thrill of the hunt in city wide scavenger hunt with her troop. Girls rented a limo to take them from clue to clue! Creative and energetic herself, Lori loves how girls in Girl Scout select

and help plan their own activities and events. Lori says that by engaging the girls at all levels, “they create life long bonds, memories and connections.” And Lori works wherever she is to create strong bonds and connections. Giraffe Laugh builds life-long connections, too, and Lori sees the children of former students enrolled now. Girl Scouts and Giraffe Laugh both fulfill Lori’s passion for engaging the whole family to create success. Giraffe Laugh provides affordable, quality pre-school regardless of the family’s ability to pay, and Lori’s efforts expand across organizations and the city. In 2010, Giraffe Laugh partnered with Salvation Army at Mary Pritchard Alternative School to provide another form of training. Giraffe Laugh provided care for infants and parenting training for young mothers.

Despite raising a family with three children and running a large organization, Lori keeps learning and growing personally. She graduated from “Leadership Boise” in 2013, a year-long professional networking and leadership program sponsored by the Boise Chamber of Commerce. She also participated in a six month nonprofit leadership experience with

Idaho Non-Profit Sustainability Cohort in 2013. To top of a busy and successful year, she was an honoree for the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children as a visionary and innovative leader. And she accepted the 2013 “Non-Profit of the Year Award” by the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce. Wow, Lori has a lot to smile and laugh about.

You provide a healthy and safe environment for your children. Does your child care provider offer the same?

Healthy H abits

START IN THE EARLY YEARS

Promoting Excellence in Early Care and Education

You provide a healthy and safe environment for your children. Does your child care provider offer the same? One in three Idaho children are overweight or obese, which puts them at risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 Diabetes, sleep disorders and asthma.

33

GEM STATE FAMILY www.gemstatefamily.com

Child care providers are a gateway or barrier to childhood obesity. Because Idaho does not regulate meals or activities for child care providers, it’s essential for parents to investigate what kind of setting is available to their children.

Ask your child care provider these questions to see if they offer a healthy habitat for your little ones: How much activity time do kids have?

Promote frequent short, fun bursts of play throughout the day. Ideally this would equal about two hours of physical activity throughout the day, including outside play when possible.

How much screen time do kids have?

No screen time for children under two years. For children older than two, limit screen time to no more than 30 minutes per week during child care, and no more than two hours of quality screen time per day at home.

Do you offer nutritious foods? What are meal times like?

Serve fruits and vegetable at every meal, eat meals family-style whenever possible and don’t serve fried foods.

www.gemstatefamily.com GEM STATE FAMILY 34

What do kids drink at meal times? During the day? Provide access to water during meals and throughout the day and don’t serve sugary drinks. Serve low-fat milk for children over the age of two.

Parents are invited to learn more about healthy child care programs and how they can help to fight childhood obesity through the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC) and their partner, the High Five Children’s Health Collaborative—a group created by the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health. Together, their goal is to make childhood obesity a top priority in the state and educate Idahoans on how to prevent it. Child care is a critical first step.
