The place South Africa has an area of over 1 million sq. Km. It includes ten territories, which are the reserved “homelands� for black people. Inside the country there is also the state of Lesotho. Its main rivers are the Orange, the Vaal and the Limpopo. South Africa consists of four provinces: the Cape Province, the Orange Free State, Natal and Tranvaal.


Climate and wildlife South Africa has a great variety of climate zones. In the south west, the climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and cool winters. In the north there is a desert region. The mountainous areas, north east of Cape Town, have the coldest winters. There are 580 game parks in South Africa where you can see wild animals. The most important is the Kruger National Park where you can see the Big Five (elephant, lions, buffalo, leopards and rhinos).


People 79% of population of South Africa is black, but they come from a variety of different ethnic groups and speak many different languages. Some of these ethnic groups, for example the Zulu, are unique to South Africa. The white, 9,3% of population, are divided into Afrikaners, who speak Afrikaans, and English speakers. 2,5% of population describe themselves as Asian.


Cities The capital city is Pretoria, and other important centres are Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.


Produce South Africa produces one fifth of the entire production of the African continent. It is the largest producer of gold in the world and has many valuable diamond mines. South Africa is the eighthlargest wine producer in the world.


Freedom Day Freedom Day celebrates the moment in 1994 when Apartheid, as a system of government, was abolished, and Nelson Mandela, the famous freedom fighter, became president on South Africa. The flag of South Africa has six colours. The black, green, and gold represent the anti-apartheid movements. The blue, white and red represent the British and Dutch influences in the country.

In 2001 there was a huge free concert in England to celebrate Freedom Day and the guest of honour was Nelson Mandela himself. On the tenth anniversary of Freedom Day there was a big party in Pretoria.


Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. Nelson went to college and became a lawyer. He soon realized that the African National Party was very cruel to black Africans. Nelson decided to try to change this. Mandela helped black Africans whit they legal problems. The Africans National Congress asked Mandela to lead a war against the government. But he was arrested and put in prison on Robben Island in 1964. People in other countries were very angry about Apartheid. They refused to buy South Africa things in their shops.


Pop stars, actors and opera singer refused to perform in South Africa and sports teams refused to go there. Nelson Mandela was the world’s most famous political prisoner. In the 1990, the President de Klerk of South Africa ordered the prison on Robben Island to free Nelson Mandela after 27 years. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and in 1994 he became the first black African president of South Africa.
