Regional information Experience the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site Wonder at the amazing sunrise and sunset over the sea dike (page 27) Take a boat at low tide to Ameland or Schiermonnikoog, you never know, you might spot some seals (page 13) Hunt for oysters at the Skoor near the village of Ternaard (page 23) Spot some exquisite birds or simply enjoy the fantastic views from the lookout points at Noarderleech or Zwarte Haan (page 9) Take some spectacular photographs at Moddergat or Wierum (page 27)

UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea region has an unparalleled dynamic landscape. This obviously starts with the sea, but when the tide is out, a vast network of channels and gullies is revealed, interspersed with tidal mudflats and sandbanks. The German and the Dutch Wadden Sea regions were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2009. These regions were joined by the Danish Wadden Sea region in 2014. This puts the area on equal footing with other such world-famous natural wonders as the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. From Den Helder to Denmark, from Schiermonnikoog to Dokkum, the vast and varied landscape of the Wadden coastal region is unique in world geography. Mussel banks, nutrient rich silt, vast salt marshes, and white sandy beaches, sand dunes punctuated by swaying seagrass meadows: this varied landscape makes the Wadden Sea region a unique living environment for all types of plants and animals.

North Friesland Outer Dikes

Terpenland

One of Europe's largest salt marshes can be found between Zwarte Haan and the pier at Holwerd; the North Friesland Outer Dikes. This area covers more than 4,180 hectares with summer polders, meadows, silt grasslands, mudflats and salt marshes and is a paradise for flora and fauna. Every year, more than one million birds choose this region to feed, rest and breed. The entire sea dike offers ever-changing and multi-coloured panoramic views in every season of the year. The salt marshes are invariably flooded during the storm season.

It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time, before the construction of sea dikes, when the only sea defence was provided by the mounds. The “Terpenroute” (mounds route) forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and passes through areas that were formerly covered with water for centuries. You will pass through small villages such as Ginnum, Reitsum, Lichtaard, Waaxens, Brantgum and Kettingwier with amazing churches, windmills and estates, and you can climb the highest mound in the Netherlands - Hegebeintum. The Bezoekerscentrum Terp Hegebeintum (visitors centre) is a good starting point for a cycling trip along the mounds. ❶ Pypkedyk 4, Hegebeintum - limited winter opening hours ❶ Harstastate Hegebeintum ❷ Brick-built Sjuxmastate entrance in Waaxens

The dike is home to an unmanned visitors centre, Kweldercentrum Noarderleech. The centre provides information on the nature and history of the inner and outer dikes of the North Friesland coastal region. An ideal starting point for a journey of discovery in this remarkable region. Noarderleech 5a, Hallum - open all year round

The Lauwersmeer The sea became a lake; the lake became a natural wilderness. A short summary of the historical background of the Lauwersmeer National Park in the region bordering the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The Lauwersmeer region has so much to offer. Sprawling, rugged grasslands naturally maintained by the grazing Konik horses and Scottish Highland cattle. Vegetated sand and clay flats, with an enormous area of shallow water. A welcome resting place for all types of birds, including the Sea Eagle. Migratory birds rest here when travelling to warmer climes or to their breeding areas. Winter guests use this region to escape their colder habitats. The wildlife in this national park has created an irresistible destination for all ornithologists and nature lovers. Would you like to know more about the activities in the Lauwersmeer National Park? Go to pages 20 and 21!

The historical storm disaster Museum 't Fiskershúske, Moddergat During the night of the 5th and 6th of March 1883, the Paesens-Moddergat fishing fleet experienced one of the heaviest spring storms in the history of the region. The ice-cold sea waves to the north of the Wadden Islands claimed the lives of 83 fishermen. Only Gerben Basteleur, aged 31, survived the disaster. His uncle, Kornelis Visser, survived initially, but Gerben was forced to watch as his uncle finally succumbed to exhaustion and drowned. Gerben managed to reach the shore. When the islanders of Schiermonnikoog discovered him, he was more dead than alive. After just a few days, Gerben felt the need to venture out to sea. Unbelievably, while he was fishing he retrieved the body of his brother Jan. The fishermen of the Paesens-Moddergat fleet were not the only fatalities that night. Many other fishing boats were lost on the coasts of Groningen and North Holland. However, the Paesens-Moddergat disaster was unparalleled. Opposite the Museum 't Fiskershúske on the sea dike, a monument has been erected in memory of the 83 fishermen who died during the storm. ❶ Fiskerspaad 4-8a, Moddergat - closed during the winter season. A house that is a work of art Ruurd Wiersma Hûs, Burdaard During a period of 5 years, Ruurd Wiersma created a large, colourful panoramic painting representing the four seasons. It became the life's work of a man who transported milk throughout the region until he was 60 years of age. Once he discovered his talent as an artist painter, he couldn't stop painting. Ruurd continued his work, which was later described as naive art, until his death in 1980. Every piece of artwork by Wiersma depicts a story: Nine biblical scenes, his profession as a milk transporter, the coronation of Queen Beatrix, a marriage ceremony in the village of Burdaard and his most famous painting, 'de Elfstedentocht’ (Eleven Cities Tour). His collection also features paintings of a loving wife and children - he had always yearned for a family. Many of these works can be seen at the house adjacent to his original home. A number of expert and enthusiastic volunteers are on hand to explain the works of Wiersma. ❺ Mounewei 6, Burdaard - closed during the winter season. Price class: € Interested in art? Regional features Forget about the usual chain stores for a while. Go by car or bicycle and explore the North Friesland Shopping Route (Noord-Friese Winkeltjesroute) or the Wykeinroute. Many local businesses along the route hold communal open days for the public on a number of Saturdays throughout the year. There are: the candle making shop in Burdaard, Polish ceramics in Reitsum, a gastro cafe in Wierum, a working windmill in Paesens, and outdoor mosaic and lace workshops in Ferwert. Just some of the places that make Friesland even more enjoyable. Opening hours and directions can be found at www.friesland.nl/ noordoost.

Islands excursion If you wish to take a day off from the mainland, you can take the ferry from Holwerd to Ameland or from Lauwersoog to Schiermonnikoog. Once you step on to the shore of one of the Wadden islands you can forget about the world and start to relax. Experience the sunshine through the day and the guiding lights of the lighthouses in the evening. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity, go exploring, admire the beautiful nature or fantasise when you hear the sound of the sea. The Wagenborg passenger ferry completes the trip several times a day.

Schiermonnikoog You will not only leave your car in Lauwersoog, but those feelings of stress as well. As soon as you board the ferry to Schiermonnikoog, you'll be overwhelmed by the tranquil sea and the unparalleled natural beauty. There is, of course, a village where you can not only purchase essential items, but also an array of island knick-knacks and souvenirs. However, the main focus is the cycling trip! The island is 18 km long and boasts 30 km of cycling routes. Schier will also reveal a world of flora and fauna. Once you leave the village, you immediately enter the Schiermonnikoog National Park. Experience the unique environment of the smallest inhabited island in the Netherlands. It’s also great fun to take a seal spotting tour on one of the islands.

TIP

Ameland The views from the 27 km long Ameland beach are awe-inspiring. These distant views can be especially enjoyed during long walks. Cycling can also be a delightful and enjoyable experience with around 100 km of cycle trails running through the woodlands and dunes. These islands, in all their glory, will make the extra effort extremely worthwhile before relaxing on one of the many terraces to be found on Ameland.

A boat makes regular trips from the Esonstad Holiday Park directly to Schiermonnikoog. Tickets are available at the reception at: Skanserwei 28, Anjum - limited opening times throughout the year. Price class: €€

WADDEN Walking

Mudflat walks No, not mudflat wading as described elsewhere in this magazine, but mudflat walks. The section of mudflat along this walking route is part of the Friesland coastal trail that runs from Stavoren to Lauwersoog, which represents a section of the Netherlands coastal trail that starts in Zeeland and travels to the German border. This is also a section of the European ‘North Sea Trail’ which is a coastal trail that runs past Germany, Denmark, Norway and England. Would it not be a personal achievement to walk just part of this trail? It is simply a ‘must’ for any enthusiastic walker! The route: the Frisian coastal trail - choose the distance to suit you The entire route can be downloaded from the website: www.friesland.nl/noordoost.

Start at Lauwersoog and follow the white/red signs featuring the letters LAW (Lange Afstands Wandelen, which is Dutch for Long Distant Walk). Don't forget to take something to eat and drink for on the way. Remember, some of the inclines along the sea dike are not accessible to dogs (even on a lead). Visitor attractions Distant views from the old sea dikes, the outer dike sea marshes at Noarderleech in Hallum, the Marrum dike temple, mound villages in Ferwert and Hegebeintum, together with a few sheep simply wandering free.

A walk around the church grounds: Sibrandahûs

Historical route The north of the Netherlands is steeped in history. Evidence of this can be found in the 50 historical walking trails throughout this region that run for a total length of 400 km. These routes are indicated by blue-purple signs. All routes can be found at www.friesland.nl/ noordoost. The following information concerns just one of these trails.

The route: Warfstermolen – Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen | 8.5 kilometres The walk starts in Warfstermolen at the crossroad sign in the village. You leave the village towards the east. On leaving the village, head north along the Oosternieuwkruisland. After approx. 2 km, take the Nieuwe Zeedijk, also known as the Buitendijk. This will take you past the vakantieboerderij (holiday farm) Rintjeshoek and onto the Schalderdijk. Continue past the village of Kollumerpomp and the resistance monument on the Soensterdijk, along the Eskepolder and on to the end destination in Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen. The word “zijlen” in this case, literally means “sluices”. If you still have some energy, you can continue the route from Engwierum to Anjum, a distance of approx. 8 kilometres.

Visitor attractions The view of the landscape is everchanging when viewed from the meandering dike. This elevated position only adds to the charm of the route surroundings.

This small church is situated on a mound beneath high trees. It was established as an outer sanctuary for the former Klaarkamp monastery. The north wall has a recess that runs down to ground level, and is fitted with a Romano Gothic window and a circular window. The church is surrounded by a graveyard encircled by a canal. A small number of houses and farms are located beyond the mound in the middle of the clay landscape, just outside of Dokkum. The church has become well-known for its many, extremely popular concerts featuring Frisian troubadours, folk groups, classical ensembles and major orchestras. Interesting trivia: once a year, a church service is held in the native language of Groningen especially for people from Groningen now living in the province of Friesland. Fetch the key yourself Every Saturday afternoon during the summer period, more than 250 churches in Friesland open their doors to the public. Volunteers are always on hand to welcome visitors and tell them a little about the history of the church, often offering a cup of coffee or tea. Occasionally, a church will be holding an exhibition, a concert or special cycling trip. The churches or chapels are the ideal venues for peace and contemplation. Would you like to visit the inside of the church in Sibrandahûs out of normal opening hours? You can collect the key yourself from Mrs. De Vries, Burdaarderstrjitwei 2 in Sibrandahûs. WaDDEN Cycling

Route 1: Part of the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) 25 km Every year on Whit Monday, thousands of cyclists travel the Elfsteden route. Due to such large numbers, the cyclists avoid a narrow but beautiful road along the Dokkumer Ee. Would you like to take this route? Start at the bridge in Sibrandahûs on the road known as Trekwei. Keep to the left onto the Iewal, the water should then be on your left-hand side. Turn left at the T-junction onto the Iedyk. Shortly after cycling past the water, turn left onto a narrow cycle path which takes you in to the woodland. Continue along the cycle path to Burdaard, around the harbour, past the windmills and through the village. Carry on cycling along the right-hand side of the water. Shortly after Burdaard, the cycle path ends and continue on to the Iedyk, just a short distance from the water. You can’t miss the turning to Bartleheim. You will then notice the famous wooden bridge. This tiny bridge has become world-famous thanks to the television broadcasts showing the enormous number of spectators standing at this spot during the Elfstedentocht. This location allows the spectators to see the skaters pass twice. First heading towards Dokkum and then back from Dokkum to Leeuwarden. After Bartelheim, continue cycling along the waterside to Wyns. Keep to the right-hand side of the water on into Leeuwarden. You can also take the ferry, after disembarking, continue turning right until you reach the Wynser Binnenpad. After crossing the meadows and farmyards, you will arrive in Lekkum, the end of your route. You are almost certain to pass some freshly mown grass - a truly delightful experience! Another famous bridge Instead of keeping to the right-hand side in Wyns, take the through road towards Gytsjerk. At the T-junction, turn right and take the route along Canterlandseweg to Lekkum, the final part of this section of the Elfstedentocht. You can also turn left at the T-junction and cycle across the ‘Tegeltjesbrug’ (tiled bridge). This bridge has been tiled with the images of past Elfstedentocht competitors. When seen from a distance, the thousands of tile images appear to be a single large image of a line of skaters. This is the final bridge before the finish line of the Elfstedentocht.

NORTH-EAST FRIESLAND · THE WADDEN SEA REGION

Die Dokkumer Ee De Dokkumer Ee is a long connecting section between Leeuwarden and the Lauwersmeer. De Ee was once an important shipping lane for the transport of raw materials in the north of Friesland, but is now primarily used for pleasure boats between Leeuwarden and the Waddenzee (Wadden Sea). Dokkumer Grutdjip, Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen and the Lauwersmeer can be reached using this same stretch of water.

Route 2: Along the shores of the Wadden Sea and Lauwersmeer 57,5 km This route combines the three main features of North Friesland: the Waddenzee, the Lauwersmeer National Park and the polder landscape. This is a tour to enjoy the salty air of the Waddenzee, the peace and tranquillity of the villages and, given nice weather, paddling in the Lauwersmeer. Your children might even catch some crabs! On the way The picturesque landscape is adorned with numerous Friesland villages such as Wierum, Metslawier, Anjum, Ee and Paesens-Moddergat. These are ideal places to take a rest from cycling. It will seem as though time has stood still when you wonder at the monumental treasures of yesteryear. You will cycle along Esonstad near Anjum (Oostmahorn), a newly built town in historical style. It has borrowed its name from Ezonstad, a settlement which once stood in the same place and was intended to protect Friesland from the Normans. That the settlement actually existed has never been proved, but it makes an intriguing story. Direction signs The route starts and ends in Ternaard, at the Herberg de Waard van Ternaard. Routes are indicated with rectangular green and white boards featuring circled numbers. The numbers on the boards will guide you from junction to junction. There is an information board at every junction providing further information about the ongoing route.

WaDDEN Water

Let someone else take the helm!

Take the rudder!

Lean back with a drink and a bite to eat within easy reach and watch the magnificent Frisian landscape pass you by. Take plenty of photographs to preserve the beautiful memories. It’s all possible thanks to a number of the organised boat trips throughout the region:

A whisper boat is reasonably quiet, hence the name. The engine controls are relatively simple. This allows the helmsman to still take in the views. The controls of a motor boat are also fairly straightforward while the actual boat offers more space. To make a real impression, go for an electric sloop! It is not only superb in appearance, but these boats are fitted with the latest mod-cons.

Listen to stories about sea fishing during older days and experience the atmosphere of working on a fishing boat under sail, the Wierumer Aek. ❶ Booze Wijf: Strandweg 1, Lauwersoog - limited opening during the summer season. Dokkum on Sea It is difficult to imagine, but just a couple of centuries ago, Dokkum was a busy trade route due to its open connection with the Lauwerszee. This is still evident from the quays located to the east of the Zijl. High constructions calculated to cope with the varying water levels caused by the tides. The quays to the west of the Zijl are much lower. These were the unloading points reserved for local ships to unload goods intended for the surrounding towns and villages. Regularly, international ships from the Scandinavian countries, northern Germany and even Russia could be spotted moored in the Grootdiep. The Dutch Admiralty established its base in Dokkum in 1598. The Admiralty ensured the safety of shipping and protected the coasts of the provinces of Friesland and Groningen in times of war. What still remains? The Admiralty house and the slipway opposite are the last remaining features of the maritime history of the Admiralty town of Dokkum. Dokkum ceased its function as a seaport a long time ago, but it is still an excellent sailing link between Dokkum and Lauwersmeer and boats can still be seen moored around the magnificent bulwarks.

P Boniface Chapel (Bonifatiuskapel)

Photo: Marit Anker Foto: Marit Anker

Boniface (Bonifatius) Boniface, is the man that made Dokkum famous. He was murdered in Dokkum on 5 June 754 and immediately declared a saint. Even though this missionary met such a tragic end, the town retained a wealth of stories and a magnificent chapel with a natural spring which became a place of pilgrimage. Learn more about Boniface and the life of this missionary at the exhibition in Dokkum Museum and on the beautiful walking route through Dokkum that passes ten different pieces of art. The route takes you past the natural spring, the chapel and the church, as well as special pieces of art in the town centre. This route is shown on the map in red. A good place to start and finish the walk is the Boniface Chapel (Bonifatiuskapel). ❶ Bronlaan 12 - closed during the winter season. Price class: €

Interesting trivia

Theatre, film and entertainment

.....................................................

Dokkum has a small but welcoming town centre with several cafes in which to enjoy a drink or two. Dokkum also has its own theatre, known as Sense. The spring, a natural source of drinking water, is the only authentic location that still functions the same as during the time of Boniface!

The clocks chime at ten to ten You may notice during the evening hours in Dokkum, that the clocks in the town chime at 9:50 PM. This is a reminder of the time when the Dokkum town ramparts, also known as the bulwarks, were closed. The clocks always chimed at 9:50 PM as a warning that the gates of Hanspoort, Halvemaanspoort, Woudpoort and Aalsumerpoort were due to close in 10 minutes. In honour of this tradition, the Dokkum town clocks chime at precisely 9:50 PM.

The turning point Those even slightly familiar with the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) know that the skaters receive their rubber stage stamp on the waters of De Zijl in the centre of Dokkum, before leaving the town on the same ice in the direction of Leeuwarden. This point in Dokkum is known as the ‘turning point’ of the Elfstedentocht. If you visit De Zijl, look out for the benches on the quay. Both of these benches are in the shape of Friesland long distance skaters. The points of their skates provide the skaters with directions. ❸ De Zijl

Churches in Dokkum St. Martin’s Church (St. Martinuskerk), also known as the ‘Big Church’, is dedicated to the holy St. Martin. He is known because of the lantern processions held on St Martin's Day on 11th November. The church is named after Martinus van Tours, the saint that became known for giving a beggar half his cloak. The church is located on the Markt in Dokkum, and dates from the 15th century. The current St Martin's Church is not the first church to stand on this site. At least 3 wooden churches preceded the current tufa stone church. St Martin's church is the venue for a number of organ concerts throughout the summer months. These are walk-in concerts of approx. 40 minutes with free admission. ❺ Markt 2

Additional Sunday information There are regular Sunday shopping days in Dokkum, and the supermarkets are open every Sunday. Concerts are also held in the town centre on Sunday afternoons. Music, bustling terraces, and a convivial atmosphere contribute to the special appeal of this town on Sundays.

The Roman Catholic Church was opened in 1872 and was designed by the famous master builder, P.J.H. Cuypers. He provided Dokkum with a cruciform basilica in an early Gothic style, with stone cross vaults above the choir and side aisles, and wooden barrel vaults over the nave and transept. This church was dedicated to St. Martin, H. H. Boniface and companions. There are a number of Boniface relics on display in the church: including a skull fragment and a petrified loaf of bread. The church is located in the middle of the shopping centre, a stone's throw from St Martin's Church. ❹ Koningsstraat 25

Sightseeing in Dokkum In the past, a railway line ran from Leeuwarden to Aalsum near Dokkum, the route became known as the Dokkumer Lokaaltje, a nickname for the local railway. The railway is no more, but the Dokkumer Lokaaltje remains one of the most original forms of transport for exploring the town. A small train on wheels travels through the town while the driver, Piet Wiersma, provides the passengers with a variety of useful information during the journey. Skûtsjesilen is myn nocht (Skûtsjesilen is my pleasure) Skûtsjesilen is a traditional sport in Friesland. These sailing competitions have been organised for as long as anyone can remember. The most remarkable feature of the ‘skûtsjes’ is the originality of the vessels. With their sturdy construction and large brown sails, they look as though they've been launched into the water from a history book. The language used by the seamen is almost just as authentic. Below is just a small selection of some of the words used:

Drafts - Friesland style Everybody knows how to play, or has heard of drafts. But Friesland drafts (Frysk Damjen) is a different ‘ball game’. The rules are slightly different, which makes the game challenging for both young and old. So grab a drafts board, follow these extra few rules and away you go!

Frysk Damjen

• With Friesland drafts you can not only capture an opponent's pieces diagonally but also horizontally and vertically. (A total of 8 directions making many more moves possible.) • White starts, touching the counter means you have to move, and capturing an opponent’s counter is compulsory when possible. • A multiple capture and the capture of a king, known in Friesland as a ‘wolf’ has priority. • A counter that reaches the opponents rear line becomes a wolf. This counter is topped with a second counter. This does not form part of the capture. A player may make 3 consecutive moves with a counter. • The game is won when all of the opponent’s counters have been captured, or the opponent is unable to make a move. • Tip: you can surprise your opponent if you can anticipate up to ten moves in advance.

The Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) The Elfstedentocht is obviously the most prominent event in Friesland. However, this requires 15cm deep ice along the entire route. woodland and lakes Regional information

The Northern Fryske Wâlden: the best-kept secret of Friesland The combination of cultural history and nature has made the National Landscape of the Northern Fryske Wâlden one of the most unique regions in Europe. A region with its own history: clues are still visible, even after hundreds of years. Pingos from the ice age, boulder clay in the soil, peat formation, peat digs and small agricultural plots bordered by lines of trees including alder. The alder trees were planted to enclose cattle and to prevent the erosion of the sandy soil. They are now hugely important in maintaining the special biodiversity of the region. The local farmers are now largely responsible for the maintenance of this scenic landscape, which is probably the best-kept secret of Friesland.

The many faces of De Alde Feanen National Park ..................................................... De Alde Feanen National Park lies in the heart of Friesland. Small waterways, peat bogs, open lakes: the water in this natural region takes many forms. One moment you can be gazing across the vast grasslands and fields of swaying reeds, the next moment you can have the enchanting feeling of being in a swampy woodland straight out of a fairytale. The enormous variation in the types of landscape has ensured that nature flourishes. For instance, De Alde Feanen is home to more than 450 different types of plants, and is the breeding ground for more than 100 species of birds. The roe deer, fox, pine marten and otter are more than comfortable in this habitat.

Did you know that Leeuwarden-Friesland has been declared the 2018 Cultural Capital of Europe? De Alde Feanen National Park is the backdrop for the Feel the Night project. During a variety of events, visitors can experience the beauty of the night. Further information at: www.feelthenight.eu

Woodland and Lakes Culture

About the Wâldpyk The Friese Wouden (Frisian Woodland) was once a region where workers dug peat under appalling conditions. As soon as the peat was exhausted, the investors simply left the unemployed workers behind. Left with nothing, and in extreme poverty, they built their own huts. Entire families were housed in turfcovered huts and sheds. They looked after themselves, they didn't care for anybody, and nobody cared for them. Decades later, the evangelists and pastors arrived to care for these moorland residents. Step by step, or rather stone by stone, houses, schools, and eventually entire villages were built by the moorland residents. This typifies the current residents of the Friese Wouden, still referred to as ‘Wâldpiken’: full of spirit, just a bit different, and occasionally somewhat cantankerous. A Wâldpik would always prefer to be a small employer rather than an important employee.

Commercial character Wherever you look in the region, you will see things for sale at the side of the road, from unmanned stalls selling small items that ask the purchaser to leave money in a small pot, to a variety of home businesses.

Back to the old days Old money: Staten and Stinzen (Frisian estates and stone built houses) When poverty ruled the countryside, estates and stone-built houses were symbols of wealth in Friesland. A large number of these magnificent buildings are now gone. However, a number of estates and stone-built houses remain. A couple are ‘concealed’ in beautiful parks. One example is the totally restored ❶ Park Vijversburg in Tytsjerk. Garden architecture enthusiasts are fascinated by the themed gardens. Wander through the Dwaalster gardens and discover new adventures in Tobias' Tún (Tobias’ garden), and enjoy the intriguing displays in this historic garden where traces of the work of the Architects, Vlaskamp and Roodbard, are still visible.

Indoor attractions: Ot and Sien, Surhuisterveen Museumboerderij Ot en Sien (Ot and Sien Farming Museum) where time has stood still for 100 years. You will see a small shop, a school and a doctor's practice from days of old. ❶ Jan Binneslaan 84, Surhuisterveen - open all year round. Price class: €

Outdoor attractions: De Spitkeet, Harkema The open air museum and theme park known as ‘De Spitkeet’ covers more than 4 hectares, and offers a glimpse into how difficult life was for the people of the Groningen and Friesland moorland between the years 1850 and 1950. ❷ De Dunen 3, Harkema - closed during the winter season. Price class: €.

While in the area, visit: ❷ De Klinze in Aldtsjerk ❸ Stania State in Oentsjerk ❹ Fogelsanghstate in Veenklooster ❺ Lytse Slot in Veenklooster ❻ Allemastate in Oudwoude ❼ De Schierstins in Feanwâlden ❽ Rinsmastate in Driezum. Check the website to see which estates and stone-built houses are open and take a peek into the world of old money.

A great deal of local knowledge can be gained from smaller museums where the host or hostess is more than happy to tell you about the history of the region: ❸ Korenmolen de Hoop, Sumar ❹ Museum 't Wâldhuske, Houtigehage ❺ Natuurmuseum Bruinenberg / SanjesZoo, De Westereen ❻ Oudheidkamer Dantumadeel, De Westereen ❼ Simke Kloostermanhûs, Twijzel ❽ De Sûkerei, Damwâld ❾ Nôtmûne Koartwâld, Surhuisterveen IJstijdenmuseum, Buitenpost

The index m ap on pages 4 and 5 gives a sum mary of the routes

Historical route The following is a description of just one of the fifty historical walking routes described on www.friesland.nl/noordoost. The walking routes in this region are largely made up of old footpaths, such as churchpaths, huntingpaths and schoolpaths. As well as disused trade and pilgrim routes. The walking routes occasionally cross farmland and go through nature reserves. Don't forget your wellies! These routes are sign-posted by bluepurple signs. The route: Stroobos – Buitenpost | 6.5 kilometres The route begins to the south of Stroobos, at the root junction signpost for route 9. Continue along the Oude Vaart and walk across the Heawei to the Blauwverlaat neighbourhood. Cross the Princess Margriet Canal and follow the canal for a few tens of metres in a westerly direction. Follow the dirt path through the Polder Rohel in a northerly direction to the path known as De Tjoele. At the end of this path, continue through the polder towards Buitenpost, the final destination of this route.

It Bûtenfjild (the Outfield) Have you ever heard the sound of a moorland frog or experienced the aroma of bog myrtle? This is all possible in Bûtenfjild, the 319 hectare nature reserve that lies between the sand ridges of the Trynwâlden. The Bûtenfjild has so much to offer, not only the wet, arid grasslands, silted peat bogs and marshy woodland, but also ponds, vast fields of reeds, undergrowth and even a valley left by a former river. This diverse landscape has resulted in a vast array of flora and fauna. The route: choose from four In Bûtenfjild there are three walking routes that are open throughout the year. The fourth route is a circular trail on the Sippen-Finnen that can only be reached by boat from 15th July up to and including 15th March (outside the breeding season). All routes can be found at: www.friesland.nl/noordoost. Points of interest During the penultimate ice age, between 100,000 and 150,000 years ago, glaciers arrived from the Scandinavian countries. These glaciers created glacial valleys. The Bouwepet is a glacial valley that runs straight through the agricultural land in the Bûtenfjild. It connects the Grutte Wielen at Leeuwarden with the Bûtenfjild. The many glacial boulders found in this area originate from the period when the glacial valley was created. Travel in the direction of Mûnein in search of the glacial boulder monument. See the index map on pages 4 and 5.

Take a detour during your trip around Burgum and visit the Kruiskerk. This imposing church dates from around 1100 and was built on the foundations of a former monastery. The floorplan of this church became the shape of a cross when it was extended in the 14th century, transforming this Romano Gothic church into a cruciform church. During the 13th century, the height of the spires was increased and the church was provided with 3 aisles and narrow lancet windows. Over the centuries, the church has been restored and renovated several times and at one point, was close to collapse. Thankfully, it is still standing in all its glory at Nieuwstad 5 in Burgum.

Dam Jaarsma Dam Jaarsma collected almost 17,000 folk stories. This made him the most prolific collector in the Netherlands and amongst the top three in Europe! His collection is priceless, and a part of it is displayed in the stories room in his hometown of Eastermar, as well as on walking routes throughout the region. A walk around the church grounds: Surhuizum With its brick built spire and an overhead bridge, the Surhúster Toer stands in the former centre of the Friese Wouden. It is among the last remaining in the north of the Netherlands. The church was thought to have been built in the 12th century but has been destroyed several times. This is probably why the church path, ‘it Langpaed’, has such a bad name.

x map The inde 5 s 4 and on page ary m m su a gives utes of the ro

The story of ‘It Landpaed’ A pastor, accompanied by an elder was returning from some house visits when they were confronted by something strange. They were half way home when a white apparition appeared before them. They stopped and the apparition disappeared. This happened twice. However, on the third occasion, the apparition remained in view. Both men stood as if rooted to the ground. This frightening experience never caused the pastor to abandon his holy faith and he demanded the apparition to fly away in the name of God. The spirit offered no resistance. However, the path still has a dubious reputation to this day.

5, 7 or 12 kilometre route Start at the church and travel west onto the ‘it Langpaed’. Half way along the path, turn left and follow the concrete path. Cross the road and continue straight on to the sand path known as ‘de Hurde Eker’. When you reach the end of this sand path you have three options: • Turn right to the bustling town centre of Surhuisterveen. A walk of approx. 1.5 km. • You can turn left and take the first turning on the right. Continue straight along the Suderheawei to the Miedwei. Then turn left and cross the small bridge in the direction of Rysloane. This road eventually takes you back to the village of Surhuizum. This route through the Nationale Landschap De Noardlike Fryske Wâlden is approx. 7 km. There are no opportunities for refreshments along this route. • The third option is to turn left onto the sand path and return to the village of Surhuizum.

This extensive cycle tour follows a network of hedgerows, alders and rows of trees. You will cycle past grasslands and fertile fields. En route, you will see water holes, known as ‘pingo ruins’, that are thousands of years old. Isolated farms and a number of small villages are the only buildings in the Nationaal Landschap Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. It's actually known as the most small-scale landscape in the Netherlands. Study the route at: www.friesland.nl/noordoost. Take a quiet moment You will find a total of eleven different picnic tables on the way. While you are enjoying a sandwich in Burgum, Oentsjerk, Damwâld, De Westereen, Veenklooster, Kollum, Buitenpost, Harkema, Rottevalle, Eastermar and Oudega, you can learn more about this region from the information boards.

Woodland and lakes Water

Earnewâld Do you like water and magnificent nature? Then you must visit Earnewâld! This village is located in the centre of De Alde Feanen National Park and is steeped in history. The turf industry started in the mid-18th century. A blow to the peat region that turned largely into areas of bog. The strips of land became narrower and the wind and weather caused large pools of water to develop, preventing the local residents from leaving their land, sometimes for months. In the 19th century, large sections of this land were segregated to create the summer polders. Nowadays, Earnewâld is a village known for recreational watersport and for not being overrun by the masses. You can rent a small boat to enjoy a short trip and moor up at a terrace to enjoy the convivial atmosphere. The Princes of Oranje preceded modern visitors by a couple of hundred years. Which is why you will often see the word Princenhof (Princes court) throughout the village.

Why not try a SUP?

All on-board!

This wetland region can be explored perfectly well by traditional methods. However, for something different, you may want to try a SUP. Often described as ‘walking through the wetlands’. A ‘SUP’, otherwise known as a ‘Stand-Up Paddleboard’ involves standing on a surfboard while using a paddle to move along. This is not only a different outlook on water recreation, but a whole new way of seeing the surroundings. When you ‘SUP’ through the Friesland landscape, you might occasionally come face-to-face (literally) with horses or cows on the wetland.

With the whole family, or the entire camping site, Rondvaardij Princenhof (pleasure boat hire) in Earnewâld has a suitable craft for all occasions. An experienced guide will travel with you to provide regional information and, to add to the fun, you can set up a barbecue on deck. ❼ Steiger Rondvaardij Princenhof, Piet Miedemaweg 19 , Earnewâld - limited opening during the winter season. Skûtsjemuseum

......................................................................................................... There is still plenty to see onshore. The Skûtsjemuseum in Earnewâld is just one example. It is located in a building shaped like a ‘skûthûs’ (Frisian boathouse). In the past, these buildings were the heart of a shipyard in Friesland. The main focus of the museum is the life history of a former generation of sailing ship crew members. The skills involved in traditional shipbuilding are demonstrated in specially fitted-out workshops with the obvious emphasis on championship skûtsje sailing. De Stripe 12 closed during the winter season. One of the most beautiful Christmas Fairs in the Netherlands is held in Dokkum. The town centre is decorated in Dickensian style during the second weekend of December. Are you in need of some exercise after the Christmas period? The Slach om 'e Toer (Battle of the Tower) offers a number of scenic walking routes on the final Tuesday of the year. Registration is possible in Surhuizum for distances varying from 10 to 40 km. A number of ‘snerttochten’ (pea soup tours) are organised at the end of the year, not because of the weather, but because of the delicious pea soup that the competitors can enjoy after completing the tour.
