“WITHERED BEAUTY”

DESIGN CONCEPT
“ The theme of the project is named “Withered Beauty”. ‘wither’ is a natural phenomenon on plants caused by time, as time goes by, the colour, texture and shape of plants is gradually changed and then another kind of beauty is created. Thus, based on the exploration of the wither process of plants, the project aims to reference the colour, texture and shape of withered plants to create five designs to show their unique beauty. Besides, the collection of the project shows the combination of natural withered plants and artificial textured circles. Inspired by the holes burned through fire, the transformed circles combined the shape of those holes and textures of withered plants to describe an unperfect view to the design. As people always throw away those withered plants because they are often attracted by blooming flowers, they do not realise the process of dying of those plants shows a different beauty from the process of blooming. Time takes away vivid colour and moisture from these plants but give back darker colour and new textures to them to create a kind of natural unperfect effect and show a unique sense of beauty. “Withered Beauty” also reminds me think of those discarded things because of their old, dirty or broken appearance, such as an old cloth, a dirty paper, and a broken plate. People always ignore to consider give these discarded things a new application but pay more attention on new things and things they defined as “beautiful”. This view makes me think of the unsustainable phenomenon within textile industry in contemporary society, that large amounts of textiles will be discarded to landfills every year, which causes bad environmental impacts and loss of resources. Thus, the project also could be treated as a notice for people to help them realize the unperfect aesthetics created by old things and then guide them to pay more attention on the consideration of finding new application from old things instead of directly discard them. From old to see new, the dead of the plants is a starting of new life. ”
