EDITOR’S note While others were rebelling, I, too, tried my hand at independence, wanting to make my own decisions, guide my own life. I was eight. “I’m going to be a garbage collector,” I announced. I can almost feel my heels digging in, waiting for a fight. Without missing a beat my mother simply replied, “That’s great. Everyone has garbage, own your own company and you’ll make millions.” It may not have been the answer I had anticipated but it’s exactly the kind of philosophy I’ve always admired. If you want something; if you love something, there’s nothing to stop you from doing it. Find a way to make a living from it, and you have the key to success. That’s not to say things will be easy. But to me, those who choose to follow their dreams, and who support the dreams of others make up the Warrior

Women as personified in our amazing photo shoot from Maurizio Fantini. So it seems appropriate in our “Warrior Women” issue that we celebrate those that go beyond your average design, such as Copenhagen based jewelry designer Alidra Alic, whose wearable art is admired by both art and jewelry lovers; Julia Kaldy who continues to push the boundaries of footwear design and Swedish designer Efva Attling whose inspiring designs and powers of re-invention are truly remarkable. We also welcome to the fold two of our own warriors, our new Editor-at-Large Samantha Lim and Associate Editor Kerri Jarema. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it.

“Functionality is important, but function, too, is a design decision.

Julia KALDY DAYDREAM DESIGNER It can be hard for up-and-coming designers to stand out in the footwear industry but with the kind of designs Julia Kaldy dreams up, stardom was only ever a heel away. Starting out in handbag design, it was a workshop for furniture designers at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen that ignited her love for footwear. “I instantly fell in love with the organic and natural materials” says Kaldy. It was the inspiration for her very first shoe collection, Urban Oasis—the essence of designs to come. Pushing the limits of form meets function, Kaldy continued to forge new paths in footwear from outrageous sandals with red leather cutouts to fur covered ankle booties. Her most recent work, Construct explores the negative space that is created as angles and lines bend, break, intersect and open up into new dimensions. The result is an absurdly beautiful collection of black and white shoes and handbags that range from the avant garde (a black leather bootie that sits atop a cage) to the relatively simple (a peep toe sandal with sheer cutouts in the leather). So what makes a great shoe? “Impeccable quality and intelligent design,” says Kaldy. “It must have details not found anywhere else and make the wearer feel special.” It is immediately clear when looking through Kaldy’s work that she takes this idea entirely to heart. You would be hard-pressed to find a single shoe in her portfolio that looks familiar.

This utter devotion to innovative design constantly challenges Kaldy’s expertise and creativity to continually create a shoe that is both high-fashion art and wearable. “For me, the human body is the base,” she says. “My shoes are wearable, but you have to learn how to wear them. Most of my models produce a new ergonomic effect on the wearer that makes them walk different, act differently. Each ingredient, each element, has an essential reason why it has been used. Functionality is important, but function, too, is a design decision.” “I admire neat and pure solutions where the materials themselves are given the most attention,” says Kaldy, citing the sculptures of Tara Donovan, the conceptual work of Argentinian fashion designer Aitor Throup and the famed fashion houses of Givenchy, Maison Martin Margiela, Marni and Prada as some of her greatest design icons. “I usually turn to contemporary art searching for materials used in new contexts.” Looking to the future, Kaldy hopes that her brand will continue to produce a range of quality collections without making sacrifices to designs or production standards. “I think our strength is and always will be the power to surprise,” adds Kaldy. “I will only expand as long as these principles can be upheld. The shoes have a big responsibility and an inappropriate shoe can ruin a whole outfit.” — KERRI JAREMA
