EDITOR’S NOTE

I

f you don’t believe in what you’re doing, stop doing it. If you’ve lost your passion for what you’re creating, find it. If the people around you don’t inspire you, seek out others who do. Be responsible for what you create, and what you contribute to this world. In every corner of the globe there is someone making a difference to the lives of others and yes, that includes you. All too often we dismiss our everyday accomplishments because they don’t fit into our sensationalized feed of information but the fact is, the small things add up. Simply reading this magazine, is giving a platform to designers who have spent their lives pursuing their dream. Without you, who would they tell their story to? We never know what battles others are facing, sometimes something as simple as a smile, a hello, an acknowledgement can transform a person’s day. So in this our Warrior Issue, we acknowledge the everyday warriors in our lives. From our family and friends, to fierce designers courageously pursuing their passion to provide you with a means of self expression. We hope you enjoying reading this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. Until next time, may your standards be as high as your heels,

ACTIVE DUTY DOES THE FUTURE OF FASHION BELONG TO ACTIVEWEAR? ACCORDING TO LONDON DESIGNER CHARLI COHEN, YES. COMBINING HER LOVE OF FASHION AND FITNESS, THIS UBER TALENTED DESIGNER IS PART OF THE NEW WAVE OF VISIONARIES BLURRING THE LINE BETWEEN THE PRACTICAL AND THE ULTRA HIP.

Activewear has become such big business, is it something you predicted when you first started? Absolutely. I could see the industry changing as I was finishing university and knew that I had to launch CC as quickly as possible to be part of that momentum. I used my final year at university to research, source, create my branding and build out a supply chain, so I was as ready to go as soon as possible when I graduated. Why do you think activewear has become so popular? Between 2012-2013, mainstream fashion media really started to focus in on health and fitness, dedicating editors to it and creating wellness pages in their magazines. I think this is what kicked off fitness as a status symbol. Aside from this, I think people just need and expect more

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2016 | @HHHEELS

from what they wear—as well as wanting to be able to spontaneously hit the gym, our lives are busier, we commute more, there is less structure and we want to be prepared. We need clothes that keep up, so wearing activewear as daywear makes sense. What’s different about Charli Cohen? One of the first priorities for me was to ensure we had the best of the best materials to work with, I wanted to break the mould of traditional scratchy shiny activewear fabrics. We work with fabric mills who specialize in putting fashion finishes on Olympic-level performance fabrics which means we have technical polyamides that emulate silk, leather and soft cotton. Our trims come from the same suppliers as Prada and Chanel. As a fashion designer first, but also a certified personal trainer,

I’m able to design from both sides. I’ll start by designing the clothes I think people would love to wear, then I figure out how to make each item fully technical. How did you first become involved? I’d always planned to have my own brand and actually started my first—a t-shirt label—when I was 15. I wanted first hand experience of the industry and all the elements of running a fashion business. The decision to pursue activewear specifically came later, whilst I was at university. I loved both fitness and fashion, so the idea of combining them was really exciting and also logical given that it was a growing market. How has the brand evolved from its first launch? With the limitations of being a new, unfunded brand, I had to keep each collection very concise. For that to be commercial and to establish the brand in this new space, I chose to focus on the more traditionally active styles—bras, tanks, leggings— with a much smaller proportion of ready-to-wear pieces. As time has gone on, I’ve been able to expand on the technical readyto-wear side, which I find so exciting, it allows me to be much more creative as a designer.

What do you love about seeing more people develop a love for activewear? I love that health and fitness is cool to the point that people want to embody that in their everyday clothes. It’s part of a sustainable movement towards prioritizing health. I also love seeing proof that fashion doesn’t have to mean discomfort or impracticality, you can look awesome but still have the freedom to respond to whatever the day throws at you. What do you see as the future? I think technical fashion is the next step on from activewear—clothes that you wouldn’t even know were active because the technology is all in the fabric and construction, rather than in the silhouette and detailing. So you could potentially workout in a tailored trouser rather than a pair of leggings, run for the train without your choice of supercool daywear holding you back or fly long haul looking perfectly put together, in total comfort with no creasing. I think it’ll be all about clothes to live in and do anything in, without being sport-specific or leisurespecific. Charli-Cohen.com — ANASTASIA RUBIN

JEREMY SCOTT X MELISSA DESIGN. WOW. REPEAT.

T

he road to awe-inspiring success is wide open for fashion warriors—particularly the formidable duo of Jeremy Scott and Melissa Shoes who have been wowing the crowd with their colorful collaborations. Earlier this year, Scott and Melissa Shoes made the Spring/ Summer 2016 runway burst in a myriad of bright candy colors. The two standout styles were the Inflatable Mule and the Ankle Boot. Only the Inflatable Mules was available from a retail standpoint which quickly made the Ankle Boot a collectible item among fans, while the mules flew off shelves in concept and Melissa Galeria Stores in Sao Paolo, New York and London. The capsule collection includes the Melissa Inflatable Mule, Melissa Ankle Boot, two flats called Melissa Space Love and Melissa Ultragirl, the amazing Melissa Tube sandal and an irresistible mini teddy bear rain boot for kids, Mini Melissa Monkey. They all feature an exclusive air nozzle thus simulating Jeremy Scott’s signature inflatable shoe. “I find the energy between opposing elements inspiring,”

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2016 | @HHHEELS

says Scott. “I also love twisting reality and making the surreal, real! It was more of a play off the fact that Melissa is known for its plastic shoes. I wanted to have it play with the inflatable pool toy ideas.” The ground breaking success of their initial collaboration showed what a great journey it can be when you’re happy to not take fashion quite so seriously and these two brands have been enjoying it every step of the journey. “I do always like the idea of putting a smile on people´s faces when they see my work and hopefully surprising them,” says Scott. “One of the reasons I choose to do this collaboration with Melissa was because I wanted to share my designs with more people and I felt this would be a great way to do that. I love seeing people wearing my designs and that they can be part of people´s everyday life.” This fabulous footwear is available for purchase at Galeria Melissa stores or online at Melissa.com. The store locations in Sao Paulo and London will also host unique exhibitions of inflatable art objects signed by Jeremy Scott. Get them while they last. — BILJANA EVERETTE

EYE ON DESIGN THE EVOLUTION OF OYSBY LONDON. FOR DOLAPO OTUNLA, OYSBY LONDON IS A CULMINATION OF LIFE, LOVE AND THE PURSUIT OF HEAVENLY HEELS. STANDING FOR, “OWN YOUR STYLE, BE YOURSELF” IT’S A BRAND THAT IS AS EMPOWERING AS IT IS STYLISH. WE CAUGHT UP WITH OTUNLA THE BRAND’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR ON THE EVOLUTION OF HER STYLE. How did you get involved in footwear design? My journey into footwear design started while I was working in Oil and Gas about eight years ago, and I started a retail footwear business alongside my regular day job. I eventually decided to make and sell my own products and I initiated this process by studying Apparel Industry Manufacturing at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. I launched my footwear brand, OYSBY, in August 2014 in Las Vegas. Since then, OYSBY has been delivering great products and receiving positive feedback from the public, press and even celebrities. What do you love about it most? I love being able to conceptualize an idea and see the idea brought to life as products. It’s even more exciting when I see the products on customers and celebrities, runways, and also receive great feedback from press. It’s all very rewarding and satisfying. What are some of the challenges you face as a footwear designer in terms of form meets function? A wise woman once said to me, “Never let your creativity become your greatest roadblock.” That wise woman happens to be me and I learned this very important fact over the course of my business. At the beginning, I was always very eager to to throw in several ideas into one season but over time, I realized that people appreciate simplicity with a little bit of quirk and since we adopted this strategy, the feedback got even better. In all of this, we never let our need to deliver exceptional aesthetics get in the way of the product functionality. There’s no point wearing a beautiful shoe if you can’t walk in it. At OYSBY, we take both form and function very seriously.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2016 | @HHHEELS

What materials do you most like to use? I love leather a lot. Apart from being one of the most comfortable and breathable materials for the feet, new technology has also made it possible to achieve very beautiful, fashion forward and extraordinary effects on the surface a leather. This has no doubt reinforced the fact that leather is enduring and will continue to evolve through the times. How would you like a woman to feel in your designs? When I think of the OYSBY woman, I think of simplicity with character. I think of women that want to tip the scale, light a fire, break boundaries, run the world and staying true to themselves while doing all these things. Women that have worn OYSBY shoes have said they feel like they have been able to express their most eccentric style dreams without losing the elements of class and sophistication. This is how every woman should feel when wearing an OYSBY shoe. What exciting plans do you have for the future of the brand? Our world today is ever so dynamic and OYSBY is evolving in such a way that it adapts to customers’ needs without losing our core values of fun and individuality. There are so many choices out there but I keep seeing the same thing over and over again. For the future, we’ll continue to deliver new and unique upper designs, heels and interesting uses of materials and colors. We are granting HHH an exclusive preview into our FW 2016 campaign and this collection reinforces the aforementioned plans. We are also beginning to expand our geographical reach and what this means is that we will become even more accessible to our customers. Oysby.com — A.R.

Aida Rock Necklace Saloukee.com

stoned THE INCREDIBLE DESIGNS OF SALOUKEE. Describe your designs in three words: Raw. Unique. Unconventional. How did you get started in the jewelry industry? I studied jewelry at college and university. After graduating, I worked for others and spent time traveling. By 2008, I knew working for myself—on my own terms—was the only way to take the steps to reach my goals. What materials do you most like to work with? Ones that feel great in my hands, sometimes natural, sometimes found, always real; ones that I can morph into something new, contrasting textures and problem solving through the limitations that the materials have, to something unexpected, designed through exploration and adventure. What’s one thing jewelry design has taught you about life? To listen to my instinct and trust my gut, it’s not often that they have done me wrong. It’s too easy to base life on what you believe are others’ expectations of you. With experience, I realized that the biggest critic in my life was always myself. The more I learn to have faith in my decisions, the more freedom I have to find contentment and answers. What’s your greatest professional accomplishment to date? When I set up my business in 2008, I set out on my one-woman mission to change—in my own little way— preconceptions of what jewelry should or could be made from. Along the way,

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2016 | @HHHEELS

I’ve written a book on the subject, undertaken workshops with people, aged from five to seventy-five, and even lectured designers on the future on the subject. In all those years, 2016 feels like possibly the most exciting year yet. It’s finally the year where I will see the medium of paper in jewelry, being ‘accepted’ and sold in a designer boutique within one of the most stylish lifestyle stores in the U.S., so watch this space for more details. What’s one thing people would never guess about you? Having been a city girl my whole life, excited by bright lights, opportunity and bustle, last year I took a huge leap of faith and moved away from family and friends and settled in the tiniest hamlet in Shropshire with my now husband and two cats. In a ‘trust my gut’ moment, I realized that with only one life to live, I wanted to spend more of my precious time taking a moment to just ‘be.’ My studio now overlooks rolling hills, I get to breath fresh air on lunchtime strolls and I get more head and physical space than I’ve ever had. Luckily for me, family, friends and London are still only a few hours away, so I also get that fix frequently too, just with more energy to give when it does happen. Priceless means: Something unique, with sentiment, never to be physically replaced.

CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF THE BALLERINA FLAT.

I

n 1947, Rose Repetto created her first ballet shoes in a tiny workshop near the National Opera of Paris. Her son— dancer and choreographer Roland Petit—was by her side to encourage and advise her. Soon, legions of prima ballerins were requesting Repetto ballet shoes, and the brand’s first boutique was opened at 22 Rue de la Paix in Paris. Unwilling to simply be the dancer’s go-to, Repetto decided to take this iconic style from stage to street, creating the first ever fashionable ballet flat embraced by style icon Brigitte Bardot and soon, women the world over. Today, Repetto hits the streets of Soho as the iconic brand opens its first U.S. brick and mortar store. The 2,350 square-foot store at 400 West Broadway in New York City, includes authentic dancewear as well as a wide variety of footwear from loafers and Mary Janes to heels and boots. The exterior takes advantage of Soho’s classic architectural elements including cast iron columns and arches, which dovetail with similar elements evident in Repetto’s Parisian stores. And, like the Rue de la Paix flagship, the use of projectors at the entrance provides dramatic lighting inspired by the catwalk. The circular room at the back of the store houses “L’Atelier Repetto”—a service that allows men and women to customize select Repetto styles. Surrounded by classic ballet apparel such as tutus, the space links the elegance of dance with chic city style, the two worlds that Repetto celebrates in equal measure. This marks the brand’s 83rd store worldwide, so wherever you are, make sure you put this store on your Shop Stop and next time you don a ballet flat, take a moment to thank the lovely Rose Repetto. EYE ON BEAUTY

COMBINING HER TWO LOVES, MARISSA WALLER, IS OUT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT BEAUTY WITH BEAUTEABAR.

How did the concept of BeauTeaBar.com come about? The concept for BeauTeaBar came about because of my own skin issues. When I was graduating law school my skin was a nightmare. I was always health conscious and holisticallyminded but no matter what I did ,I couldn’t get my skin to clear up without using harsh prescription acne medications. At the time, I was working with a naturopath/ acupuncturist who encouraged me to start exploring natural beauty products. I immediately saw a drastic difference in my skin, which sparked my obsession with natural beauty products and then my business idea. The name itself came about by blending my two most favorite things in the world, beauty and tea (hence BeauTeaBar). In our Online store and our New York boutique we sell the finest collection of natural beauty products and organic tea. What is your background? Before BeauTeaBar, I was working in the commercial real estate investment world. I’m also a New York State Attorney (which I am quite proud of). The funny things is, I remember sitting in my back yard when I was supposed to be studying for exams and playing with my makeup while trying to recreate all of these gorgeous looks I was seeing in magazines. Needless to say, I’ve always been obsessed with all things beauty!

Why do you think BeauTeaBar.com is important in today’s world? BeauTeaBar is important today because it gives women an option for luxurious products without any questionable ingredients or fillers. Women have really ushered in this new culture of health and wellness that we’re seeing everywhere. It’s almost as trendy to be seen with a bottle of green juice as it is with a killer pair of Louboutins. I wanted to create a place where luxury, world-class products, and wellness could come together. What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? My biggest beauty pet peeve is when people don’t take their makeup off before bed. The thought of it just grosses me out! And ladies, face wipes do not count! You need to get all of the makeup and debris off your face before you go to be and you need to use a cleanser and water! I know it’s hard when you’re exhausted but the two minutes it takes to get your face good and clean will make a massive difference in your overall skin health! If you were stuck on a desert island, what three beauty products would you take? Mascara (I never go anywhere without mascara, ever!), coconut oil (you can use it for pretty much anything), and a good face cleanser so I never have to go to bed without washing my face.
