EDITOR’S note Nothing makes you evaluate your shoe closet quite like moving. Did I realize I had 35 pairs of knee-high boots? No, not really. Do I regret having 35 pairs of knee-high boots? No, not at all. I do however, vow to design a fabulous custom wardrobe in which to display them in my new apartment—so I never forget again. From their humble beginnings to the toast of the catwalk, the boot has played a huge role in footwear and we believe that’s something to celebrate. As we head into the cooler months we look at some of footwear’s biggest boot innovators along with the brands we’ve come to know and love. Couple that with this season’s hottest beauty looks and we’ve got you covered head to toe.

FOR WALKING...

DANIEL CORREA CO-FOUNDer vogasbarcelona.com

“Vogas boots are versatile enough to take me all the way from a nice dinner with friends—wearing a summer suit—to a romantic walk on the beach. With my boots, the greatest thing is that I enjoy the path as much as I enjoy the arrival, no matter where they take me.”

INDIA HICKS DESIGNER INDIAHICKS.com

“If my boots could carry me anywhere it would be back in time, to Dehli 1947, to witness my grandfather as Viceroy hand over power to India; to witness the birth of two new nations and be present while history was in the making, and above all to meet my bewitching grandmother, who died before I was born.”

EFVA ATTLING FOUNDER & DESIGNER EFVAATTLING.com

“First my boots would take me to South Africa. I will hurry to pass by Nelson Mandela and thank this superman for making me believe in the human being. Then my boots and I will ride on a horse over Pampas in Argentina and finally come to Brazil where I take my boots off and dance barefoot on the beach like The Girl from Ipanema!”

Imogen Belfield DESIGNER IMOGENBELFIELD.com

“If my boots were made for walking, they would take me back to my art school roots in Cornwall; to rugged coastal path walks, down onto the rocky and isolated seaside landscape of Prussia Cove. To be inspired and surrounded by space and serenity, with glistening ocean jewels, beautiful natural stone and shell formations.”

Ann Spence FOUNDER/DESIGNER SHEBEE.com

“My boots definitely were made for walking, but if they could take me anywhere? I’d love to go back in time and experience the folk cultures of Mexico and India a thousand years ago but only if I could come back again. I’d miss my family and friends too much!”

MEMENTO DUO the rise of the ankle boot From James Dean to The Beatles; Coachella trendsetters to Soho sophisticates, the ankle boot has been a staple for shoe lovers of all generations. It’s something the team at Memento Duo know well. We caught up with the creative minds behind the brand to talk style, shoe making and beautiful boots. Describe the Memento Duo wearer in three words: Cool, self confident, rock ‘n’ roll. How has your geography contributed to the aesthetic of the brand? Being Italian, we strongly believe that “Made in Italy” adds value to our product. Italian shoemakers work for the most important international shoe brands. We wanted to combine Italian quality with an iconic product to create the perfect marriage—quality is the essential element of our boots, together with a clean and sharp design. What inspired you to create the collection? There are so many elements

that inspire us every season; starting with movies and music. David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith are some of our musical references. They were the first ones going to Chelsea during the ‘60s and buying handmade boots by little artisans working in that district; those artisans were Italians. We also like to be inspired by everyday life and common people. A lot of people we meet on the streets can be unknowing icons—it’s absolutely important to be open and receptive. Only by being receptive to every image, sound, moment of life and story can anything become inspiration. What kind of statement do boots make, in terms of style and attitude? One of our claims is: “Boots to rock.” What type of shoes did The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Bob Dylan wear when they first started to play? Boots, of course. We’d like to give people the message that everyone can be an icon, not because of wearing our boots but by learning to be self-confident and expressing

MEMENTODUO.COM

their own personality and charm. It’s not what you wear but what you feel like when you wear something. That is the reason behind our decision of create a unisex collection. Male or female, just feel free to express yourself! If our boots give people a weapon to make them feel cooler, well, that was our goal. What manufacturing components do you feel are necessary to make the ultimate luxury boot? When you look at our boots, they are very simple. To make a simple and clean item in an excellent way is the hardest thing. We only work with top leather and skins and some of the techniques used have been rediscovered from the traditional hand-made craftsmanship; soles are sewn with “Blake” construction, a typical manufacturing process of traditional shoe making through which the leather’s thickness is cut with a scalpel and then repositioned to cover and protect the stitches from rain. Our heels have a straight shape detail taken from horse riding

boots. Another important detail of our boots is the little metal logo inside the upper. We believe true luxury does not come from big logos on display everywhere but from quality that speaks for itself. Any plans to diversify into other types of footwear? When we started almost one year ago our idea was to work on an iconic product. We researched a lot and finally decided to start with the “Chelsea Boot,” The King of iconic boots. Our goal was to take it and re-imagine it to make it recognizable as our own design. We would like to become the icon of this kind of boot. We want our collections to be seasonal but timeless—an item that you hand down to your siblings that will still feel cool in them many years and many trends later. This is also where the brand name comes from: MEMENTO DUO is the imperative of the latin verb MEMENISCI and it means “REMEMBER!”

EYE POPPIN’footwear PETER POPPS It may be true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t feel awe when exposed to the creations of Peter Popps. Starting out as an architect before breaking into the fashion industry, Popps says that he was “born with a pencil in his hand” and first found his love for fashion when he was a just a little boy obsessed with Daisy Duck’s shoes.

While that might seem like a big ambition to place on a pair of shoes, Popps is adamant that his passion for footwear comes from a place that any designer could appreciate. “There is nothing more satisfying [than] a confident woman in beautiful heels who uses the streets as her daily catwalk,” he says. “Designing never stops and I [can only be] proud when I see someone [confidently] wearing one of my designs.”

Though his current inspirations are decidedly more grown-up—citing fetishism, sci-fi, pop art and futuristic design—it is clear that there remains both a childlike fascination for creative freedom and an architectural sensibility in his designs. “[My designs] come from novelties, innovations and revolutions in many ways,” says Popps. “I adore the developments that come out of rebellion and liberty.”

With 24 years of experience creating both commercial and high fashion shoes for numerous brands before branching out on his own, it’s obvious that the main focus for Popps has always been making shoes that any woman would be proud to have in her arsenal. “My shoes are for the woman who knows when and how to wear them,” says Popps. “Who is in charge of her vulnerability in a different way than what most people know or accept... who knows the sound [she makes] when walking as well as the lyrics to her favorite song.”

Though he never works with any particular checklist in mind, each of his pieces are distinctly unique, utilizing sharp edges, metals, clean lines and avant garde accents. He seeks to oppose mainstream cultural values and explore new terrains—and it’s clear that the striking designs speak to much more than functionality. In fact, Popps’ four main works all speak to the same heavy themes, expressing ideas that have little to no part in the mainstream identity of today’s culture—from “Cube” which was developed with the punk and bondage movements in mind, evoking both powerful elegance and vulnerability; to “Bow” which represents men’s animalistic sexual instincts toward women.

It is this idea of self-confidence and disregard for social constructs that ties together all of the artist’s work. “I remember a moment on the subway in New York when [everyone was] dressed in dark colors and there was one woman wearing red shoes and another wearing cobalt shoes. Both were my designs,“ says Popps. “I think we would have a different world with women in charge and that’s what I want to express [in my work.]” We definitely can’t argue with that. — KERRI JAREMA

WONDEROUS

Loose, effortless curls are always in style and this season is no different. Whether you have straight, curly or uncooperative hair, red carpet ready curls are only a fingertip away thanks to our expert hair stylist Danielle Cirilli. If You Have Straight Hair What you’ll need: Curling Iron, Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine, Bumble and Bumble Spray De Mode Hairspray To transform straight hair into glamorous looking curls this season, start off with a medium size, barrel curling iron. You’ll want your hair to be dry. Take a one inch section in hand, open the clamp of the curling iron and wrap hair around in the direction you want hair to fall. Then apply some Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine for shine and Bumble Spray De Mode Hairspray for just enough hold. It’s as simple as that. IF You Have CURLY Hair What you’ll need: Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Calming Cream, Bumble and Bumble Defrizz To tame curly hair, separate your hair into two sections, working on

the bottom section first. Apply a quarter size amount of Bumble Curl Conscious Calming Cream (or a dime size depending on the thickness of your hair). If you have coarse curls or a frizzy texture add Bumble Defrizz to your Calming Cream. Apply to the middle and ends of your hair first, then apply to the roots. Twirl individual one inch sections around the curling iron to mimic a big curl. Do this all the way around and then repeat to the top section of your hair. When finished, use a diffuser on low speed, aiming it down toward your head. This will keep the curl smooth. If you aim from below it blows the hair upward creating unnecessary frizz. Do not twirl the diffuser around, because that will create frizz. Finally when your hair is 85% dry throw your head upside down and diffuse for lift. Do it until hair is 100% dry. “Scrunch” a little after or pick apart any curls that might be too big.

TIP: If you want to keep your style intact for the next day, sleep on a silk pillow case with your hair down.

THE PERFECT Lipstick can be one of the most nerve-wracking cosmetics to apply. Trying to figure out what shade works for you, how to get a long lasting look and how to keep your lips looking plump and healthy can be difficult. That’s why we spoke with celebrity makeup artist Reiva Cruze to answer some of our burning beauty questions. Is it best to use a lipstick that matches our skin tone? I usually like to do one of two things—I either go really bold and dark or super nude. Everyone always turns to the red lip, but I don’t like to just throw that on everybody. What common lipstick pitfalls should we avoid? Unless you’re a supermodel, you can’t always do the red lips, red dress, heavy eyes look. It borders on trashy. If you’re going to do a red lip, I like it with a really neutral shadow and mascara. It’s classy and well-done whether it’s for a casual or formal event. For special events, go for a pretty neutral or a bold burgundy.

What’s the best way to look after our lips? You should exfoliate your lips the way you exfoliate your face. It’s the best way to keep your lips looking healthy all the time. I love Sally Hansen lip exfoliator. When I’m applying makeup I use that, then put on Aquarphor healing ointment, letting it saturate into the lips while I’m working on the rest of the makeup. I always do lipstick last, so you have a completed palette to work with, after all excess makeup has been cleaned off and set with powder.

How do we get a long-lasting lipstick look? If I’m working on a shoot, using a matte lipstick I’ll use a neutral powder to set the lipstick but your best bet is to reapply. We’re looking for new brands to add to our arsenal. Do you have any suggestions? Definitely! Tom Ford has some amazing lip colors right now. They’re creamy, silky, moisturizing and bold. London Butter has a new makeup line out with

incredible lip colors. I also love St Laurent and Chanel for high end options. Should we invest in an expensive lipstick or is it all hype? The most important thing is to first find a color you love. It doesn’t matter what brand it is, if you find a color that makes you feel good, there’s no reason to get anything else. Saying that, if lipstick is your “thing” I would definitely check out the higher end colors because they’re incredible. We’ve been known to chicken out on bold lips, should we be afraid? Even I get afraid of a bold lip. My suggestion would be to ask advice from a friend who’s into makeup. Then put it on and wear it around the house—check out your reflection in the mirror every now and then to get used to it, then head out. It’s like a great pair of heels; you have to practice wearing your lipstick to see if you can rock it before that big event.

WHEN LESS SAYS We all wish we could crawl out of bed with naturally supple skin, looking awake and refreshed without a stitch of makeup. But since most of us weren’t blessed with the power of perfect looks, we turn to makeup for a helping hand. Expert Holly Corsano gave us the scope on what makeup to apply to bring out your natural beauty. Wake Me Up: The best thing you can do for waking up a tired face is to put something on your skin with an illuminator in it. I love NARS’ Illuminator in Orgasm. It’s awesome alone or when mixed in with your foundation

it will make your skin look dewy but not overly pigmented. For The Face: For an every day naturally beautiful look, tinted moisturizer is the best way to achieve coverage and an even skin tone without feeling like you have a ton of makeup on. You can cut your foundation with a bit of your daily moisturizer or try a BB Cream for a lighter look. I love M.A.C’s BB Cream because it has a supple texture that leaves your skin looking hydrated but not at all powdery. For The Cheeks: Choose something that is closest to your natural

lip color. The blood in your skin is what creates your natural flush, so choosing a blush closest to that will wake your skin up but it won’t look painted on. For The Eyes: I would definitely recommend mascara, applied to lightly curled eyelashes. Then for a more natural shadow look, take a small angled brush and lightly tap a brown shadow directly on to your lash line. It will make your eyelashes pop but without that heavy eyeliner look. For The Lips: I like a tinted conditioner or a sheer gloss.

TIP: Always exfoliate and never sleep in your makeup.

ZOE &

Inspired by travel, style and most importantly family, U.K. based jewelry brand Zoe & Morgan continues to deliver timeless designs. Created by three siblings with a passion for adventure we caught up with Ruth Sibbald to talk all things that shimmer and shine. Describe the Zoe & Morgan wearer in five words: Well traveled, smart, a sassy intelligentsia.

also make jewelry on the side but more for fun. What are your favorite materials to work with? We use silver and gold of all colors. In regards to stones, I love Sapphire for the variety of color and properties they have. I am also particularly fond right now of rose gold set with Cognac and Champagne diamonds, or rose gold mixed with platinum and set with gray and pink diamonds.

Was jewelry always your master plan? What’s your proudest moment in business? Jewelry is in our blood but there was never a master plan. Our father was a jeweler so we grew up around it. Zoe started making and selling jewelery as a teenager, and after coming to live in London worked for a milliner, but kept making her jewelry as well. Morgan worked in the music industry and started making jewelry after a trip to India where we found a lot of inspiration and stones that he used in his necklaces and earrings. I worked in the model industry and

I am really loving my shop right now. It’s been great to be able to open in Primrose Hill which is where I have always lived. I enjoy being able to make great jewelery displays and talk to our customers. So right now I guess it’s this. But overall, I am most proud of the fact that we get to work together as a family, travel and create a brand that we all truly love. The perfect outfit deserves... to shine with a positive attitude and a good dose of fun.
