EDITOR’S LETTER

“The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.” — Bertrand Russell

THE PLAY ISSUE

It’s rare to see me without a camera. It’s the one way I feel I can capture time without letting it passing me by. Photographs give me the ability to savor, relive and share a moment. One that I will always cherish—even if I don’t feel like I did it justice at the time. I’ve always been one of those people who wants to jam as many experiences into one lifetime as humanly possible and I have. The trouble is; I haven’t always had the energy to savor those moments the way I would like. And so, in our overachieving world that never seems to come up for air, I thought it was important that we had an issue simply entitled, Play. It’s been so much fun to put together this issue. I’ve had the chance to work with some of my favorite creative people to

develop concepts, shoots and editorials. From our gorgeous model, Lindsey Coffey, who happily jumped on top of playground equipment to fulfill my “creative vision” to our wonderful lineup of designers. This is issue is about doing all those things you’ve never made the time to do like apple picking or being a tourist in your own backyard. As 2015 looms in the not-too-distant future, I think it’s important that we’re able to reflect and make positive changes about how we choose to live our lives. Wasting time doing something that makes you happy is okay. Remembering to laugh is highly encouraged. Spending time with people who love and inspire you: an essential ingredient to staying young. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. Until next time, may your heels be as high as your standards.

IN HER SHOES CHARLOTTE LEBECK’S ROAD TO RICHES.

F

or Danish designer Charlotte Lebeck, jewelry is more than an accessory, it’s the way in which we reflect our individual sense of style—an outward expression of our inward intention. “The type of jewelry you like—and wear—is a statement about you and your personality,” says Lebeck.

The former fashion industry veteran launched her eponymous line of jewelry in 2012 having become frustrated by the difference between fashion and fine jewelry. “My designs appeal to women who still have a playfulness about them and have an innate love for design that can be mixed and matched,” says Lebeck.

Lebeck’s designs exude a fine jewelry feel with an on-trend, contemporary aesthetic.“I love the simple and minimalistic aspect of design,” says Lebeck. “I think that is very much a part of my personality. I also love the raw and extravagant. I love to mix these two very different designs, and make it personal and unique. I think that is something that I have from my Danish heritage.” Lebeck loves to work with precious metals creating a line of jewelry that is compartmentalized into four sections —Gold Plated Silver, Oxidized Silver, Titanium and Fine Jewelry. All priced accordingly. Working painstakingly on the details are what sets Lebeck’s designs apart. Handcrafted, these pieces are both timeless and on-trend based upon universal themes. “I work very hard with all my creations, so when my design are produced there are no mistakes or challenges,” says Lebeck. Crossing international borders, Lebeck has been busy establishing her brand in Germany and readying her latest collection for the holiday gift-giving season, revealing in the path jewelry has paved for her. “I am fascinated by the different expressions you can achieve with styling your jewelry and making it personal,” says Lebeck. “It is like building a jewelry wardrobe; you can make big and chunky, or small and delicate.” Whatever your personal style, it’s clear Lebeck’s road to riches lies in following her passion. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

ON PINS & NEEDLES THERE’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN PLEASURE AND PAIN.

T

here are certain designs that simply memorize us. Kim Bruce’s collection of fine art sculptures, entitled Heels, is one such collection. Using footwear as a medium of expression, Heels prove the power of footwear goes far beyond fashion fads and catwalk trends. Born and raised in Canada, Bruce studied fine art at The Alberta College of Art & Design and The University of Calgary. An artist specializing in fine art sculpture, her work utilizes everyday objects to express thought provoking questions. “I am a visual problem solver who invites the challenges of working with incongruous materials,” says Bruce. “This often leading to new and exciting processes that investigate bitter sweet contradictions concerning life’s fragility.” Using the human form—in this case the foot—to express her artistic vision, Bruce’s creations were designed to provoke musings about the state of our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. “Well Heeled started this series when I thought of your feet getting pins and needles,” says Bruce. “I use multifaceted double entendres that exploit puns. I love visual puns, but my work goes deeper than that and can have many levels of meaning.” As a medium of expression, shoes are often used to express the way society views women, wealth and our acceptance of pleasure meets pain. Our obsession with height and dominance all come into play when it comes to footwear design and statement pieces, something Bruce explores in her creations. “High heels represent in a word, sex because it certainly is not comfort,” says Bruce.

“For women in lower income areas it may present encouragement and a means of measuring success, decadence and abundance. On a practical note; there is no practical note.” These days Bruce has swapped her heels for more practical wear, leaving the height to her sculptures. “I had a pair of four inch spikes that I used to wear out dancing when I was younger,” reminisces Bruce. “I’m still not sure how I pulled that off; dancing barefoot comes to mind. Once I settled into my twenty-year career of running a design firm, my heel lowered. Luckily in a creative business one does not have to, nor is expected to, conform to conservative dress.” Geography often plays a role in one’s personal view and creative endeavors for Bruce; however, a global perspective is only a click away. “I remember in college we were taught that the trends start in Europe and trickle down to western Canada (where I live); this could take a year or two,” says Bruce. “Now with the Internet, there’s no reason not to be global. Where one lives is arbitrary, as long as you have a good Internet connection. People find my work online from around the world. Which in turn has presented exhibition opportunities in America and Europe.” With an arsenal of contemporary works and limitless inspiration, Bruce’s footwearinspired pieces give us food for thought. “I want people to experience something when they look at the work; be it positive or negative,” says Bruce. “I want to evoke a response. If it does that, then the piece is a success.” KimBruce.ca — ANASTASIA RUBIN

BACK TO THE FUTURE IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS.

A

dvanced. Innovative. Multifunctional. Welcome to the designs of London-based jewelry designer, Viktorija Agne. Inspired by the concept of mobility and transformation, Agne’s creations push the boundaries of accessory design utilizing shapes, materials and production techniques to create unique pieces for the fashionforward crowd. “Being an accessory designer has been my dream ever since I was a teenager,” says Agne. “After completing my education in Denmark, I followed my dream all the way to London to study Fashion Jewelry. It was the best decision I ever made.” Vibrant colors and bold silhouettes are the trademarks of this upand-coming accessory designer who melds techniques, old and new, to achieve her futuristic look. “I enjoy working with different kinds of metals, 3D printing and leather,” says Agne. “But mostly, I enjoy experimenting and combining these

techniques together because even though it seems like very different materials it provides endless possibilities.” A designer who believes in the functionality of accessories, as well as their beauty, it’s the attention to detail that sets her apart. “Tiny little details, which might not be very important to other designers, are very important to me because at the end of the day, every tiny detail in my designs plays not only a visual roll but also a functional one, so it’s really important to think through every single aspect.” As with many creatives, Agne’s greatest obstacle is time. Thankfully the young designer, has a burgeoning career ahead of her. “Jewelry is a big part of our lives,” says Agne. “I guess most of us don’t even notice it, but I’m sure that every female—even every male—who wears a piece of jewelery every single day, that particular piece of jewelery is a part of who she of he is.” — JULIA STUART

t was a love of designer shoes that first set Konstantina Tzovolou on the path to footwear design. Beginning in Greece, designed in San Francisco and made in Italy, this globally sourced brand, is as eye-catching as it is wearable. Created and designed by Academy of Art alumni Tzovolou, it was both the craftsmanship and the challenge of starting a non-traditional business venture that set her eponymous line of footwear into being. “As a small startup company, the resources are limited, which often means I’m a designer, an inventory manager and an accountant in the same day or even hour,” says Tzovolou. “Juggling hats is one of my favorite parts of the job.” Driven to succeed with a well-defined aesthetic, Tzovolou uses a mixture of

HEAVEN HAS HEELS november 2014 | @HHHEELS

design elements to create her signature look. “Leathers and mesh are some of my favorite materials,” says Tzovolou. “They’re visually and texturally different, but the two compliment each other so well.” Fierce, feisty and feminine, Tzovolou is a believer in comfortable heels that allow women to look and feel their best. “Stylish shoes can be comfortable,” says Tzovolou. “I’ve had a lot more comfortable heels than comfy flats.” A firm advocate of the heavenly heel, the world is beginning to discover the fanciful designs of Konstantina Tzovolou. You can be sure that many more shoes and fun designs are on their way—along with many more hats to juggle for this talented designer. KonstantinaTzovolou.com — NICOLE ROSS

LUCK FAVORS THE PREPARED CAMILLA ELPHICK’S STYLISH GAME PLAN.

W

hen you enter the world of heavenly heels, you roll the dice when it comes to commercial success. Every year thousands of design students graduate around the world compete for a place among fashion’s elite. Few make it, fewer still ever work out why. The deciding factor is not based on talent alone, but on tenaciousness—a willingness to listen, learn and apply experience, knowledge and creativity to the competitive world of fashion design. Up-and-coming footwear designer Camilla Elphick, is a designer who realized early on that luck favors the prepared. “I have always had a real love for fashion and footwear from a young age but began my university studies at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York,” says Elphick. “I would try and direct each project during my Foundation year towards footwear design. It seemed like a good idea to then apply to Cordwainers at the London College of Fashion to the BA Footwear course. The course was a good start into the footwear world, but I also gained experience interning with Nicholas

Kirkwood, Sophia Webster, Donna Karan, Paul Andrew and Charlotte Olympia.” Inspired by everyday life, the process of concept to creation remains one of Elphick’s favorite parts of the job. “There are so many different parts to a shoe,” says Elphick. “It’s quite amazing how all of the different parts can come together to form a beautiful shoe that also holds the weight of a person.” Conversation-worthy designs in classic silhouettes have propelled this designer into fashion footwear’s hottest young things. “I want women to feel instantly lifted, lucky and confident in a pair of my shoes,” says Elphick. “Style and comfort can work together. I do think it’s important to find the right shape and heel height for your foot and your lifestyle, but it doesn’t mean that shoes can’t be stylish too.” With International distribution on her hit list, it won’t be long before we see the talents and tenaciousness of Camilla Elphick on the feet of the fashionable the world over. NINETEEN PIECES

INSPIRED DESIGN FOR THE SAVVY FASHIONISTA.

N

ineteen pieces was created to bridge the gap between costume and fine jewelry. The brand is the brainchild of former apparel & graphic designer, Hannah Goldstein, who, having had a successful career in ready-to-wear discovered her true passion, accessory design. “I’ve always loved accessories,” says Goldstein. “I am a firm believer that an outfit is never complete without them.” After graduating from Parsons The New School for Design, Goldstein worked in the apparel industry before launching her own line. “A slight change of course, was in order,” says Goldstein of her career change. “I began sketching. Sketches lead to samples, and before you knew it, I found myself in front of a desk full of jewelry prototypes. I was in heaven!” Inspired by animals and nature, Goldstein combines quality materials with intricate designs to deliver show stoppering pieces at an affordable price. “I often find inspiration through animals and nature,” she explains. “Having such unique textures, patterns, and color combinations, I start there and then build a story. I look for areas of the world that I’m curious about and ask myself questions. What animals are native to

HEAVEN HAS HEELS november 2014 | @HHHEELS

this region? What other aspects can I gather about this section of the world that would make sense in a story? A mood board is then created, and I refer back to that at all times while designing.” Texture is an important element in the designs of Nineteen Pieces. For Autumn/ Winter 2014 Goldstein introduced the use of leather to the line, something that adds yet another dimension to her unique aesthetic. “Leather was so much fun to work with because it’s a fabric,” says Goldstein. “Therefore, you can pleat it, shred it, use it as a watch band, etc. I chose to do all.” For Spring 2015 expect Goldstein’s latest milestone—her wedding and honeymoon to Bali—to shine through. “I was so inspired! For Spring 2015, you’ll see lots of Indonesian inspired jewels. Shapes and patterns seen on historic temples, patterns and textures representing wildlife native to Bali and much much more!” With a growing fan base and loyal clientele, this is only the beginning for Goldstein’s unique take on jewelry design. For her, jewelry is more than an accessory its a personification of her mood; an opportunity for self expression. “If I want to be bold, I’m going to wear the biggest, most colorful earrings that I have. If it’s a rainy day and I don’t really feel like getting too dressy, I’m throwing on some cute, funky studs or hoops and a simple chain and walking out the door. If I’m going out on the town, I’m wearing my Showstopper necklace and Fashionably Late bracelet and stealing everyone’s attention! The key is to feel it, wear it, and be confident about it. No one can knock you if you believe in it.” NineteenPieces.com— ANASTASIA RUBIN

If you could wave your magic wand, what’s one fashion trend you would do away with forever? Laura: That’s an easy one. We would entirely eliminate the use of animal products in fashion. To most people, living without leather, fur, silk, and wool might sound dramatic, but we’re out to prove how fantastic you can look without those materials in your closet.

What’s coming up for LookieLou.com? Laura: We’re just beginning to carry outerwear and will have a fabulous selection of pieces from Unreal Fur, Vaute Couture and Hoodlamb this fall. We also try to introduce new brands to our existing categories every season. Next up are some gorgeous velvet heels and booties from Italian brand Opificio V. — LookieLou. com

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. What information lies within our footwear? Could the exploration of the way we walk prove to be a defining factor in our health and well being? We chat with Daniel Xavier, Founder and CEO of UniverSoles, in the hopes of discovering the secrets of our soles. What is UniverSole? UniverSole insoles are hightech insoles dedicated to making you a better athlete and improving your quality of life. Using advanced pressure mapping technology UniverSoles give you pro-athlete performance data like foot weight distribution during activities like running, cycling, walking, or just standing around. How did the idea of UniverSoles come about? The idea for building UniverSole came about like most new ideas, we discovered a problem and had a potential solution. It sparked when one of the founders began discussing how he was getting a pain on the side of his leg and he knew it was from having flat feet. Then bulbs started flicking on, and someone said the magic words, “I wonder if there’s a device for your shoe that lets you track your weight distribution?” It was down the rabbit whole from there, leading us to where we are today. What is the design background of the UniverSoles team? The UniverSoles team has experience in various aspects of engineering, including mechanical, material and hardware. In addition, product design experience specific to Internet and mobile technologies. Combining these skill sets allows us to create a 360-degree product that considers the hardware and software user experiences. How will Universoles revolutionize the way we gather data? UniverSole is the most accurate foot tracker, able to map out a user’s applied pressure across countless activities. This data can be used beyond normal fitness applications, providing information that can be used by the medical world, specifically orthopedics and sports medicine. We

will be able to understand and learn the way people move in their natural state, and with high accuracy. How can this data be applied? The data can be applied across lifestyle, sports, medical and more. Imagine being able to identify that you’re not sitting properly while at your desk at work, or the way you walk is causing a slight pain in your leg. Imagine, being able to shed a few seconds off of your run by understanding your stride and posture. Or how about why you fell short on your jump shot by the amount of power you released off of the balls of your feet. How about monitoring a foot or leg related injury and knowing when you’re putting too much pressure that will lead to a slower recovery. All of these examples are just snippets of how UniverSole can be applied. Can anyone wear UniverSoles? At the moment, only adult men and women can wear UniverSoles. But we cover nearly every size. UniverSoles can also be used in virtually any footwear that uses or has insoles. Are UniverSoles primarily for fitness wear? Initially yes, the application for UniverSole is fitness. But we intend on expanding out to specific sports, lifestyle and medical applications in the future. How much would you see them retailing for? At the moment, we can say that they will go for around the same price as high-performance wearable like a Garmin watch or monitor. Again, our claim to fame is monitoring pressure through our mapping technology. Activity tracking is just a bonus. — UniverSole.com

Designer Marie Lapaire

when worlds collide

Tia Blanco

Tia Blanco travels the world competing in some of the world’s most prestigious surfing events. A lover of nature, she recently teamed up with Parisian jewelry designer Marie Lapaire to create Satine x Tia Blanco—a capsule collection of vegan jewelry. We caught up with the surfing super star to talk inspired design. What role does jewelry play in your life? I think jewelry is a fantastic way to express yourself and be creative. I also feel that personal style is important and jewelry is an excellent way to accessorize and emphasize your vibe to others. How did the collaboration between you and Paris-based jewelry designer Marie Lapaire come about? We met through Instagram. She started following me and when I saw her collection I really liked it. We started conversing, and my manager suggested we collaborate. Being that she was in Paris, and I am in California it was pretty interesting to work on something solely through emails, Skype and text. When she flew out to shoot the pieces with me, it was awesome. It was my pleasure to work with her! How does your own vegan lifestyle affect the way you shop? I love animals! If I

could control what product all designers had to use, I would make it all vegan. Making the line vegan was a no-brainer for me, and I am thrilled that part of the proceeds will go to an organization I work with, PETA2. It’s been quite a meteoric rise to the top for you, did you ever think that surfing would become your business? No way! When I was little, I was such an underdog, and I totally had no confidence in my surfing. Now I believe in myself. This career has been way better than I imagined it would be. I am so blessed to have so many incredible people supporting me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. It has definitely been a team effort of family, sponsors, friends, my manager and the fans. What does an average day look like for you? I surf about five hours a day. I wake up at 6:30am to surf, do my schoolwork (I am on a home school program so that I am able to travel and compete). I train with my trainer, surf again, and then relax. Some days are more stressful than others, but I know I’ve got the dream job and that definitely puts things back into perspective when I focus on that. I am very thankful to be able to do what I do as my job. What’s the best thing about living the life you lead? Surfing is my passion. My life revolves around the sport. It has taken me on so many amazing adventures. The best part is traveling and experiencing new places and cultures and learning new things. — SatineCreation.fr

PLAY UP YOUR STYLE WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE A CLOWN

BATTLE OF THE SEXES: DO YOU LOOK WHERE YOUR SHOES ARE MADE DO YOU CARE?

We caught up with New York stylist, Mia Tucker Williams, for tips on how to reinvent your style.

H ER SAY

How can you play around with your usual style without feeling like a clown? Taking risks with your fashion sense can be fun and easy. Try out a new trend with your accessories and work it into your personal wardrobe. You will avoid looking like a fashion victim, and you will not be stuck with a full look if you decide you don’t like it.

“I always check to see where my shoes are made. It makes a big difference in quality and price point.” — Jessica, Finance “Certain countries are known for certain production qualities—from craftsmenship to materials— so yes, I care where my shoes are manufactured.” — Lisa, Consultant

What’s one thing you can do to elevate your everyday look without buying a new wardrobe? Invest in a great coat. It can elevate everything from jeans to slouchy sweatpants.

“If I like it, I’m going to buy it. I don’t care where it is made.” Melissa, Sales Assistant

HIS SAY

“No, I never look. I buy mostly athletic shoes so I didn’t think there was much of a choice.” — Todd, Fitness Industry “If I’m investing in a good pair of dress shoes, I definitely want to know where they are made.” — Mark, Entertainment “I think the world is changing. Good and bad products can come from anywhere so I look more into what materials the shoe is made of rather than where it is made.” — Mike, Driver

“I do read where a pair of shoes are made, which I never used to do before. Maybe it’s because I feel ethically inclined... But at the end of the day, price and design are the deciding factor to me .” — Maree, Personal Assistant

Are you a fan of bright colors or muted tones for AW14? I love a great plaid during the fall season, and anything jewel toned. What’s you fashion mantra to the masses? Just do you!

According to the GuinNess Book of Records, The heaviest vehicle pulled in high heels by a woman is 6,586.16 kg (14,520 lbs) and was achieved BY Lia Grimanis (Canada) at Toronto Track and Field Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on 11 June 2014.

eary of tales

Inspired by old-world fairy tales, we couldn’t resist the allure of fine jewelry line Feary of Tales after all, who doesn’t want their happy-ever-after? Based in Switzerland, we caught up with founder and creative director, Susie B.

thing for you when it comes to design? It’s the consistency of all elements and the harmony between them that make the concept. The soul of the line and perceivable craftsmanship comes from being hand-drawn and handmade.

Describe FAERY of TALES in three words: Fresh, meaningful & timeless

What materials do you most like to work with? I am very sensitive to the touch of materials. After all, jewelry is in direct contact with our skin. I like to combine materials that are smooth and warm to touch. The delicate charms and the keyhole clasp, all made of 18 karat gold and sterling silver, obtain their sleek surface through most thorough polishing, done by hand. For the bracelets, I love to use soft calf leather. Even the round jewelry boxes are supple, made out of suede.

What was the inspiration behind the brand? Century old fairy tales share a world of wonder, and wonders delight little people, but also grown-ups. In the beginning, fairy tales were passed on orally. Then the Grimm brothers and others wrote them down to preserve them for the next generations. Over the last 90 years, movies made tales popular for a wider audience. I want fairy tales to come alive in a new way, allowing them to be with us every day. In jewelry, they become a visual link between parents and children. What’s the most important

Are you a believer in layering jewelry or letting one piece shine? I like pure lines and prefer to give each piece its unique place and value. Choose well and go for it. — FaeryofTales.com

CLUB CAVALLI Last time I was dining “Cavalli” style it was in Dubai. Nibbling on gold leaf sushi will sipping Roberto Cavalli Vodka, we sat surrounded by an interior filled with 356,000 Swarovski crystals while some of the world’s most well-known DJs cranked out the hits. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For those looking for something a little different, there is an experience a little closer to home thanks to the Cavalli Miami. This two-story, villa-style restaurant and lounge has all the opulence you’ve come to know and love from the renowned fashion designer. The decor is distinctly Cavalli with exotic animal prints, distinctive floras and mirrored accents line the walls with larger than life photographs of Cavalli—a tribute to the designers 35 year career. The menu is authentic Italian headed up by Executive Chef Stefano Mazzi, whose recipes are inspired by his Italian heritage. Offering everything from Crab Raviolli to Pan Roasted Chilean Seabass and Lamb Ossobuco this opulence is the kind that appeals to all five senses. — A.G.

SHAKERS

WE TALK INSPIRED DESIGN WITH Martin Premuzic, Creative & Managing Director of one of the leading FASHION showrooms in Europe. How did you get started in fashion? I was born in the southern part of Germany, in Bavaria, and I moved to Berlin in 1997. Bavaria is nice, but it’s a bit conservative and not very open minded when it comes to avant-garde fashion. They say that Munich has the money and no style, but Berlin has the style and the money. I finished my studies in Economics in Berlin, and during my studies I set up the space here. In the beginning, it was just a space for friends and me to do, discuss and show art and fashion. Once a week we did an exhibition with a little bar aside and with the money that came in, we paid the rent. After a while, I decided to focus more on fashion, and it became successful. The agency part of the business began in 2004. Two years later, due to the huge international customer demand, we launched our online shop: TemporaryShowroom.com/shop. What is a designer showroom? It is a space to display the sample collection of a designer for the upcoming season. You always present collections one year in advance. Press are invited to see the collection and write about it to promote future trends and styles that will be available in the shops and streets one year later. Buyers, this means people that own stores or buy for them, place their orders so designers can produce a certain amount of pieces that will be delivered later. Stylists also visit showrooms to pull pieces for photo-shoots, editorials, videos and red carpet events. What kind of brands do you represent? With Temporary Showroom, we are always combining the concept store and PR agency work. For us, the most important thing is to work with brands with a strong concept and that are visually striking and different, plus we love unisex brands. For several seasons, Temporary Showroom has presented the Swedish unisex brand ODEUR Odeur.se Apart for conducting sales for them, last season we organized a stage presentation at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. For the next season, we would like to make a bigger show with ODEUR, hopefully, a catwalk show with

some surprises. We also started presenting 3.Paradis 3paradis.com, a menswear brand from London with a brilliant future. What’s the best part of your job? To have the privilege to work with very creative people and be surrounded by beautiful clothes, objects and images. Do you ever want to run away with the samples? Most of the time. We work with brands we identify with and love to wear. When it comes to having an eye for fashion, what do you look for when scouting new designers? People come to our store searching for special pieces, so we make a selection that will provide our customers the possibility of making a statement about style. When looking for new designers, we focus on the concept behind the brand. For us, it is important that the universe of the brand has an appealing story, concept and static. By this, I mean that not only the clothes are important but also website, Lookbook, campaign images basically their whole image plays a very important role for us. Temporary Showroom was for very long focused on Scandinavian design; we still carry many Nordic designers like Henrik Vibskov and Stine Goya, but now we are also focusing on other brands with a different approach especially from London. Who are some of your favorite finds for 2015? For the next summer, we will bring on board three new British brands: Nasir Mazhar, KTZ and Kit Neale. What skills do you need to be great in this fashion field? Be able to see upcoming trends, work with the good part of them and realize what is just ephemeral. — TemporaryShowroom.com

JeanIUS

Statistically, every American owns, on average, seven pairs of blue jeans. Then there are the endless varieties... As we head into the cooler months we talk fit, form and fabulous denim with Diane Carleton, Creative Director of FIGI jeans. Why denim? I love denim for a few reasons. Firstly, Indigo dye is a “live” dye in the sense that it is ever changing. It is one of the few fabrics that can improve with age, wearing and washing. Secondly, the possibilities with denim are endless with all the different fibers, weights and treatments which make it a very fun material to work with. Another great thing about denim is it can be dressed up and dressed down to fit almost any part of your day and night. The same pair of jeans could be worn casual or decked out for an evening out. I love the authenticity and the celebration of the very cool American invention that is denim. How did you get started in design? As a child, I loved everything to do with art and decided that fashion design would be a great way to incorporate that love into a career. I went to F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) for Fashion Design and then for Apparel Production Management. I’ve been designing ever since. What’s the most fun part of your job? The design process is the most fun for me. This entails picking colors, fabrics and trims. It also involves market research, that is staying abreast of what is happening in the larger world and what is trending. Another part of the design process is sketching styles, thinking about details and fit and pulling this all

together with color, fabric and trims. How important is fit when it comes to a good pair of jeans? There are a few things you need to get right when designing jeans and one of them is fit. It would not matter if everything else is perfect, if the fit is not good; no one is going to wear them. Women have several different body types and luckily there are a number of different jean brands so you can find the right one for your body type. How do you know what style suits you? This is two part question: 1) Your body type may dictate that you wear certain styles, for example I have a petite torso and wearing high waist jeans/pants/skirts makes me look even more disproportionate. 2) How you want to express yourself is a big determining factor on what style suits you. Here I would recommend that you discern how you feel when you wear certain styles and work these items into what you wear each day. What’s the most challenging part of working with denim? The most challenging part of working with denim is taking a concept and figuring out how you will be able to make it in production consistently and that the consumer can wear and care for it appropriately. — FIGIJeans. com

EXPORE Sometimes you simply want to be guided. You want to discover hidden gems without the trial and error, particularly when it comes to culinary hot spots in a city like Manhattan. I’ve lived here for over a decade and still not scratched the surface of what this great city has to offer. Occasionally, it’s nice to ask for help from the experts. Foods of NY Tours have been doing our homework for over fifteen years. Established in 1999, they provide tours of Manhattan’s most favored culinary hot spots. From Greenwich to Brooklyn, these guys have scoured the streets of New York to provide a foodie cheat sheet of fabulous eateries. That book up fast! On a rainy night in downtown Manhattan, a group of fifteen strangers gathered to explore the best of Chinatown. Personally, I’m not a big fan of tours. Simply because I don’t like being a tourist. I want to go off the beaten path and eat like a local. Perhaps due to the small numbers or because of their reputation, but a night out with Foods of NY Tours feels like a reunion of distant friends not a touristy gathering. At my table was a fellow Australian, a couple celebrating their ten year wedding anniversary, a choreographer

and socialite from Texas, and native N New Yorker. Many had been on more than one Foods of NY Tours and were returning for more. Always a good sign. A new addition to the company’s coveted tours, Foods of NY’s Chinatown tasting and culture tour is a “sitdown” vs. walking tour beginning at Dim Sum Go Go (5 East Broadway). Our knowledgeable guide, Raheem, talked us through the history of dumplings—which is actually quite fascinating—as we sampled the best of this much-loved dumpling house. Next, it was off through the backstreets of Chinatown for a little history lesson before our main course at New York’s famed Peking Duck House. The food, the ambiance and the VIP treatment was well beyond anything I could have expected as we dined on the best dish of each restaurant, headed next to New Malaysia (48 Bowery) and finally Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (65 Bayard St). Of course, there were numerous smaller stops on the way, but the beauty of this tour was definitely the access, the knowledge and the company. Go with friends, go alone, go anyway you can. A culinary cheat sheet of New York City has never been this fun (or this delicious!). FoodsofNY. com — ANGELA GILLTRAP

WELL HEELED HOT SEAT WE put FASHION BLOGGER, Xeni Kouveli OF thestylelove.com, IN OUR WELL HEELED HOT SEAT. Sequins or Satin? I will go with satin because it’s smoother on the skin. Flats or Five Inches? Although heels have a special place in my heart, I’ll choose flats because they are practical and much more challenging in terms of styling, for me. Tiny Tote or Enormous Bag? Tiny tote. Full-stop. Overdressed or Under-dressed? My nature yells overdressed. Even if you’re wearing flats. What’s Your Fashion Mantra to the Masses? Layering and mix ‘n’ match. I don’t like simple outfits apart from some classic combinations, but even then, I’ll spice up a minimal look with an extra simple layer. If You Could be One Shoe What Would You be? I would be a Laurence Dacade ankle boot. Interesting, classy but edgy with a normal heel height, enough to give you some extra inches, but easy to walk in and keep you going all day.

WE TALK TRENDS, TIPS & TOUGH LOVE WITH BEAUTY VLOGGER AND MAKEUP ARTIST, BRE ISLAR OF BREEZYFAB. What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? I’d say that my biggest beauty pet peeve is the overdone brow. We have all seen that girl with brows that are too bold, too big, and too dark. I hate it! There’s nothing better than a beautiful, soft natural looking brow. When it comes to makeup, I totally think that less is more. What three items are always in your handbag? Three items that I always carry in my handbag are: 1. MAC Prep+ Prime Pressed Translucent Powder: Perfect for keeping my oily skin at bay without making me appear “cakey.” 2. ELF’s Oil Blotting Paper: Works perfectly for absorbing the excess oils on my face. 3. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara: Perfect for long sparse lashes that need a voluminous pick me up. I prefer the blackest black formula. When it comes to sure-fire beauty purchases, what’s one brand that always delivers? I’d have to say Makeup Forever is my one stop shop. I love everything in their brand and have yet to be disappointed with anything I’ve purchased from them. I’m a huge fan of their HD liquid foundation, their mascara, and their amazing pressed powders. Absolutely love that brand. What’s your favorite holiday beauty trend? I think my favorite holiday trend is the bold lip. Nothing compliments a makeup look during the holidays like a flawless lip. I’m especially a fan of violets and deep red lips. M.A.C’s Russian Red and Cyber, & Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in #15 are a few of my faves. Quick Tip: Always use a lip liner that compliments your lip shade when applying deep color lipsticks. This helps to ensure a long lasting lip color and prevents the lipstick from “feathering” around your mouth. Youtube.com/EzBreezynFabulous

THE POWER PART YEARNING FOR THE PERFECT PART? TONY WHITE, FROM RYAN DARIUS SALON, TELLS US HOW. Megan Fox rocking a power part at the opening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

We’ve seen slick, parted hair on the runways for two seasons now, can anyone rock this trend? I would say that the slicked part is a one-size-fits-all type of hair style and if done correctly, will look amazing. What’s the key to getting the perfect part? The key to getting the perfect part is using the correct tools and the Rat Tail Comb is the best tool for the perfect part. This is due to having a pointed end that makes it easy get a clean part. It also depends on if you are going for the wet look then it is all about the products and if not, a blow dryer and brush. Are there any products you would recommend to make sure the part stays put? For a wet look use a great holding gel

like Oribe’s Rock Hard Gel. The Rock Hard Gel is great because when it dries it does still give you a wet sleek look and after it has dried you can brush it out without the flack-age. If you prefer a the more dry look with a defined part, still use the rat tail comb to define the part where you want and then blow dry part in place, that will make sure your part stays. What if you have short hair, can you still do a variation of the power part? The power part can absolutely work for short same rules do apply as long hair. Any pet peeves when it comes to the power part? The only thing the peeves me is a great outfit with bad hair!
