FOR ELIZABETH BRITISH DESIGNER LEE PATON’S ON POINTE FASHION MUSE.

L

ee Paton is a designer on the move. The young Brit launched his eponymous label in 2010 offering bespoke and made-tomeasure services that continue to attract a loyal clientele. This year marked the designer’s first foray into ready-to-wear offering sophisticated, high-quality pieces for the modern-day woman in sumptuous fabrics and easy-to-wear silhouettes. A graduate of the London College of Fashion, Paton went on to intern at Alexander McQueen and honed his tailoring skills on Saville Row before branching out on his own. The result is an aesthetic that combines British sensibility with detailed hand-finishing inspired by the early couture ateliers of Paris. This season, the designer looked to a modern-day muse — and frequent client of the house — the talented Elizabeth McGorian. A Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, McGorian was born in Zambia and studied at the Mercia Hetherington School in Zimbabwe. She joined The Royal Ballet Upper School in 1976 after wining gold in the 1977 Adeline Genée International Ballet Competition. She is a woman not only of talent but tenacity. It was her poise, grace, and unfettered style that were catalysts for Paton’s “For Elizabeth” collection, a well-received assortment of highend women’s wear. Here, you will find luxurious textures and feminine, yet powerful silhouettes. Cashmere wool, silk velvet fabrics, buttery leather and plush fur are a nod do McGorian’s elegant style. The relaxed shapes and tailored comfort reminiscent of her earlier days of dance training. With menswear also available, this is definitely a designer to watch. — LeePaton.co.uk

THE CALL OF CAPRI THE AGE-OLD CRAFT OF SANDAL MAKING GETS A FRESH NEW LOOK THANKS THE STYLISH DUO BEHIND SOFIA CAPRI.

W

e may be headed into cooler weather but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream of azure seas and seaside destinations. Enter Italian footwear brand, Sofia Capri. An island in Italy’s Gulf of Naples, Capri is known for its upscale beach resorts, rugged landscapes and high-end shops selling handmade leather sandals. It was this tradition in footwear manufacturing that became the inspiration for the brand. “We love the fact that each single sandal is created by an artisan, not a machine,” explain founders Rosella and Silvia. “Each sandal carries with it not only the story of that particular artisan, but also the stories of all the artisans before him/her and from which they inherited the craft.” Dedicated to preserving the island’s legacy, each pair of Sofia Capri sandals is made-to-order and lovingly handcrafted on the isle of Capri by a local family of artisans whom have been plying their trade for over three generations. The name of each sandal style is drawn from the names of the cobbled lanes and streets of the isle.

During the 1960s, style icons such as Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Jacqueline Kennedy could be seen strolling Capri’s narrow streets in this iconic footwear. The duo hope many more will follow in their footsteps as they aim to give these much loved styles a twentieth century makeover. “We draw inspiration from the lines and form of the classic Capri sandal designs whilst reinterpreting them through innovative textures, leathers and on-trend hues.” These modifications however, are not done at the expense of the craft. “We have learnt that certain modifications to classic styles or the design of new styles inspired by the classics are not always possible to create by hand. Therefore, certain designs have to be abandoned to ensure we fully respect our philosophy of 100% handmade.” Believing that style and comfort can coexist, Sofia Capri seeks to ensure their creations are not only beautiful but extremely comfortable so that they may be worn for many seasons to come. With an expanding list of retailers and innovative styles to come, a slice of Capri may not be as far away as you originally thought. SofiaCapri.com — A.R.

ANOTHER FEATHER IN HER CAP RACHEL TREVOR-MORGAN CELEBRATES 25 YEARS AS ONE OF LONDON’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER MILLINERS. Operating from her 17th century atelier in London, Rachel Trevor-Morgan’s creations are coveted the world over. In 2014, she was granted The Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen; an illustrious honor bestowed upon very few. We caught up with the ever-humble brains behind the brand, the illustrious Rachel Trevor-Morgan. RachelTrevorMorgan.com

How did you get involved in millinery? I always knew that I wanted be involved in a creative career and it was quite by accident that I found millinery. I had originally wanted to study theatre costuming but after writing several letters, found myself doing a millinery apprenticeship and loved it. My mother always wore a lot of hats so maybe that had a subconscious effect on me. My apprenticeship was with milliner Graham Smith. It was the best place to learn. Graham taught me that every stage is as important as the next, and that precision is key. I love what I do every day. What do you love most about creating hats? Hats become an extension of the wearer. I love how a woman’s personality becomes a part of her hat. Hats are a wonderful icebreaker for conversation and the right hat on the right person can give a confidence that no other accessory can. A hat always makes an individual stand taller and with greater poise. What three elements do you feel are needed to create an amazing headpiece? Balance and proportion are key for any hat, then of course perfect craftsmanship. We are all about the finish and I pride myself that every hat that leaves here is perfectly made. Everything is handmade in my workroom from start to finish. For example, each flower is dyed, cut, rolled, shaped and put together by hand. Feathers are steamed, cut and shaped individually. It’s a meticulous process. What materials do you most like to work with? That’s a very difficult question as I love working with such a wide variety of materials through the seasons. I love very fine paribuntal straws which are hard to come by these days but create an exquisite fine finish. I also love felts and silk taffeta for dainty small pillboxes and flowers. What has been your crowning achievement so far? In 2006 I was contacted by Buckingham Palace and asked to submit sketches for HM The Queen. The designs were approved and the first hat I made for HM was for her 80th birthday service at St Paul’s Cathedral. As you can imagine, this really was the highest point of my career. In 2014, I was granted the Royal Warrant for HRH The Queen. This year is also the 25th anniversary of my millinery business, reaching this milestone has certainly been an achievement I’m proud of. What does the future hold for the brand? I’m hoping another 25 years! At the moment we are working on quite a few projects for the Spring/Summer 16 season, including design collaborations. I’m always looking for new inspiration and to add more feathers to my cap!

ENDLESS LOVE MARA & MINE TEAM UP WITH RAIF ADELBERG TO SPREAD THEIR OWN BRAND OF HOLIDAY CHEER.

I

t began with a piece of art. Tamie Ingham took to it immeditaley, so too did her Mara & Mine co-founder, Jasmine Yarbrough. It was by the formidable Raif Adelberg. Based in Los Angeles, the two talented Australians joined forces to launch Mara & Mine in the U.S. in 2013. Their collection quickly became the “it” footwear brand on the market, worn by everyone from Cara Delevigne and Kendall Jenner to Chanel Iman acnd Catherine McNeil. Spurred on by this latest inspiration the pair met with the man himself. “We found we had a lot in common — a love for luxury and statement pieces and the use of skeletons,” says Ingham. The result is the “F*&k I Love You” collaboration, a combination of all three personalities blended into one unique range. The phrase originated on a holiday card created by Adelberg which became an instant hit.

“Following the success of the card, I started applying the phrase to various items — the things I love,” says Adelberg. “It was a way to show my appreciation to those who make our lives better.” The range is available in the Sleaker (Mara & Mine’s take on the sneaker), the classic Slipper and the exclusive Anaconda Slipper. “We wanted to add the use of exotic skins into our collaboration and make it even more luxurious than normal. It worked well with the rest of our fall collection,” says Yarbrough. Lined with lambskin and suede for comfort, these are statement-making shoes for the fashion forward — and those who like the f word. “It’s interesting that such a positive message can be viewed in such a negative light. I think more people need to say F*&k I love you. It’s amazing to me that a simple gesture can recieve such a reaction either way,” says Adelberg. MarandMine.com — J.S.

SHOE TALK MEGHAN CLEARY, AUTHOR OF SHOE ARE YOU, GOES FROM COVETING SHOES TO CREATING THEM WITH HER NEW BRAND MEGHAN SAYS. What attracted you to the footwear industry? I have been obsessed with shoes since I was five when I spotted a pair of baby blue espadrilles with embroidery at KMART with my mom. Shoes have always held a fascination for me even then. I knew just looking at this shoe that if I stepped into that shoe, my life would somehow be different. Fast forward a few years and I’ve learned over and over that is indeed true — shoes are the only fashion item we put on our bodies that have a physiological impact on how we walk, carry ourselves and operate in the world. Now that I am actually in the footwear industry — as opposed to covering the industry from a journalist’s perspective — I am even more excited. It’s an industry filled with some of the greatest, most creative and passionate people I’ve ever met. What do you know now, that you wish you knew then? Honestly, I’m always learning. I feel like you learn what you are supposed to at the time you are supposed to. I let my curiosity and passion drive me and ask a lot of questions. If I don’t know about something — for instance, trying to figure out a production issues — I usually ask why. That one simple question if you really drill down and continue to ask it — in any situation — will usually give you all the insight you need.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS holiday 2015 | @HHHEELS

Explain the concept behind MEGHANSAYS: We wanted to do something that no one else was doing in the footwear industry— we ask women what they actually wanted in shoes. From my eight years as a footwear expert, thousands upon thousands of women have poured out their wants, needs, desires and problems when it comes to shoes. We polled women during our design phase, we axed designs that people didn’t like, added materials, etc. People are so excited to buy the shoes now because they were a part of it! We design for a very spirited, fun woman who likes to have fun with her shoes and fashion, but also likes classic lasts or shapes they can return to again and again. We see this in luxury shoe lines all the time — developing those amazing lasts that women fall in love with, giving them something chic, something that fits well, that becomes an evergreen staple in their wardrobe — and in our case for under $200. We also know that fit is crucial. Because of this, we put 5mm of memory and regular foam, and faux suede pillows in the ball of the foot in every shoe. Combined with the lasts, we are really proud of the way the shoes feel when you put them on. We wanted women to feel good in them and feel good about how the shoes looked. That’s really what it’s all about.

Do you think your geographic location has an impact on your design aesthetic? I’m not sure to be honest. I lived in Manhattan for a long time and now I live in LA. I get inspired by so many different geographic locations when I travel as well. Out here I love the sea, the trees, the mountains (we’ve got a leafy palm tree print in our Spring II collection) and when I travel I will see certain details that excite me like a bow tie someone is wearing or the way a girl puts together her outfit on the subway. You never know where you’ll find design inspiration. I try to be open to as many visual treats during the day wherever I am. What’s in the works for 2016? For next Fall we are going to open up two more lasts — I can’t say yet what they are but you will see a great bootie and a very cool pump in the mix that are new additions. We are also going to continue to deepen our commitment to fun materials, prints, and detailing — look out for a partnership with a brand known for it’s prints! We are also going to expand the way we talk to our end consumers about what they want in shoes, what they are looking for that’s not the market, etc. We can’t wait!

orn in Nashville, Tennessee, Arnold Myint spent a great deal of his childhood climbing 100 pound rice bags at his parents’ market and traveling to their homeland of South East Asia for summer break. Inspired by the world of hospitality he attended the Institute of Culinary Education going on to work in Jean George Bongerichten’s before branching out on his own. MOVERS SHAKERS

&

She’s one of the most influential people in fashion — and one of the best dressed. We catch up with the power house that is Emily Bungert, one of Manhattan’s most respected and loved Public Relations gurus and founder of EB Consults.

and some days we are at the office working on paperwork, contracts and billing. We love when we get to be creative and pull images for campaigns and brainstorm ideas and collaborate with photographers and artists. It’s always something different.

How did you get into fashion? I have always been obsessed with fashion. From the time I can remember, I was drawing pictures of outfits with close detail to accessories and the full look. I started out working in fashion retail in my hometown (Minneapolis) and began meeting people around downtown that worked in the model agency and hair industries. I started doing some local modeling as well as working in reception at a local agency. I went to college for fashion buying and merchandising, before dropping out early and moving to New York City after securing a retail job in Soho working for an amazing high-end Japanese designer named Atsuro Tayama. From there, I met people and eventually started working in fashion PR for Vivienne Westwood, followed by Betsey Johnson. After that, I worked at PR agencies. In August of this year, I opened a new agency EB Consults with my business partner Stefanie Skinner, specializing in PR, Social Media/Digital Brand Management, and Event/Fashion Show Production.

What characteristics do you feel you need to possess to be great at your job? You must be a strong communicator and creative multi-tasker to be great at this job. We have to take on many different roles and move from one to the next throughout every single day. Also, you need to be a hard worker and have a strong desire to do only the best work. You cannot be lazy.

What you do you love most about what you do? I love the creativity involved in the fashion, beauty and food/hospitality industries and how we get to tap into that to tell the stories behind the brands. I also love to travel and have had the opportunity to go all over the world for work, including Sydney, Mexico, São Paulo, Paris, London, Rome and more, as well as regularly producing events in Los Angeles and Miami. What does an average day look like for you? In my job, no day is ever the same. Sometimes we are out at events, working on shows or out meeting clients or editors,

HEAVEN HAS HEELS holiday 2015 | @HHHEELS

Are there any specific qualifications you need? When I am looking at potential candidates to hire, I usually am most interested in what kind of actual work experience they have, rather than what college degree. I look for people who have strong writing and communications skills, as well as good people skills. What advice would you give to others who are looking to get into this line of work? It’s not easy. I think a lot of people come in thinking this job is all ease and glamour, and come to find out that most of the time it’s actually not glamorous at all. There is a lot of legwork that needs to be done before you end up with a clipboard at that red carpet or check-in desk. Checklists, budgets, spreadsheets, grids, phone calls, meetings, press clips, pitches, campaigns, proposals, press releases, lists, strategies, reports, our work never ends. — EBConsultsWorldwide.com

EYE ON BEAUTY WE CATCH UP WITH JORDANA WOODLAND, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF NAKED PRINCESS.

Describe Naked Princess in three words: Easy or onthe-go. Nourishing. Luxurious. What inspired the creation of the brand? My love for vintage costumes, lingerie, perfume bottles and everything pertaining to the “boudoir” was the starting concept for Naked Princess. I believe that every woman deserves a special “boudoir experience” — an uninterrupted moment where she can lay out her day and decide how she wants to dress for it. What do you love most about being an independent brand? We have the freedom to create without

boundaries. Our team is able to see every aspect of each project from start to finish, which isn’t always the case when you have a parent company to answer to. What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? When products mislead consumers with their effectiveness. You’re stranded on a desert island, what three beauty items do you take? Hand Cream, Lip Gloss and a bottle of water (I drink a ton of water). Beauty to me is: Confidence.

TRANQUILITY MEETS INSPIRATION AT SHA WELLNESS CLINIC IN SPAIN. In the shadows of the Sierra Helada mountains, lies SHA Wellness Clinic. The Spanish award winning wellness resort combines the best in western technology with ancient healing remedies to provide an inclusive experience unlike any other. Foundered by Alfredo Bataller Parietti, it was his own search for wellness that led to the creation of SHA. After a worrying diagnosis in 2002 — and rounds of ineffective pharmaceuticals — Parietti was recommended a doctor who specialized in natural therapies. He was so inspired by the results that he went on to launch this amazing facility; the doctor, now a member of SHA’s medical team. The aim of this scenic retreat is to re balance the body, mind and spirit through a series of treatments, healthy eating and the latest advances in western medicine. Designed by prestigious Uruguayan architect Carlos Gilardi and award-winning European designer Elvira Blanco Montenegro, the structure itself is designed to flow from one area to the next with a seemingly never-

ending option of wellness services. Comprised of five buildings, SHA has 93 suites that are between 70 and 320 square meters with Zen, Mediterranean and tropical gardens, an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, waterfalls, numerous relaxation areas and more than 4000 square meters of amenities that include a complete hydrotherapy circuit, various treatment rooms, relaxation areas and consultation rooms. The variety of programs on offer covers a plethora of modernday ailments from sleep deprivation and stress, to programs created to aid weight loss and counteract the harmful effects of tobacco. Dedicated to positive lifestyle changes, SHA also has its own Chef’s Studio that features daily healthy eating classes in either a group of personalized setting. It’s no wonder that they find themselves once again on the receiving end of yet another award, winner of The Best Spa of Europe Category in the Wellness Travel Awards. ShaWellnessClinic.com — J.S.

We caught up with our resident styling expert Selda Cortes to talk about the hottest trend on the catwalk, slick, styled bangs. — SeldaCortes.com What tools do you need to get slick, styled bangs? A comb, gel and hairspray. Does it lend itself to different styling options? Sure! This hairstyle can be very glamorous whether you wear it with a bun or a sleek low pony. What do you love about this look? I love that if you make the wave more profound, it replicates a 1920s look with a modern edge. How do you achieve it? 1. Style your hair straight, and choose your part. 2. Section the hair from ear to ear. 3. First, take the comb, wet it with water, and add your favorite gel. Then use the comb to start running it through the top of your head where your part begins. Use your fingers to give it that wave shape making sure that the gel doesn’t spread to the rest of the hair, only at the front part. My recommendation is to use a duck clip to help hold the wave. Spray it until it dries and then take the clip out. The gel will add that final, wet look. On a scale of 1-10 how hard is this to do yourself? It’s easier than it looks. I would rate it a 4 out of 10.

SALTY YOGA What is Salty Yoga? Salty Yoga for Breathing is a unique class where poses are chosen to focus on developing strength, flexibility and range of motion in areas specifically used by the body to breathe. As you breathe deeply, micro particles of pure white salt are dispersed into the air, entering your airways to naturally cleanse and detoxify your lungs, sinuses and air passages. Why try it? The end result of Salty Yoga for breathing will be a deeper breath, relaxation and a sense of vitality! The classes are perfect for a more effective Salt Therapy treatment. MIX UP YOUR ROUTINE

TIRED OF YOUR OLD WORKOUT ROUTINE? ADD THESE AWESOME CLASSES TO THE MIX. THERAPY BALL CLASS

What is a Therapy Ball Class? Sadly, there is a pain epidemic in our culture. Sedentary lifestyles, fancy footwear, and high stress from high-demand lifestyles can cause aches and pains throughout the body. The Roll Model® Method Therapy Ball classes (branded “Rx Series” for Equinox) are self-massage classes designed to help you eradicate pain, improve posture and enhance your performance. “Performance” could be whatever you do in daily life — from your favorite athletic activity to chasing your kid around the playground to making your entrance into a ballroom or board room with ease and grace. These classes empower you to take healing into your own hands by guiding you on a journey through your body’s habits and habitat to identify pain blind spots, and effectively transform that tissue. Why try it? Because it will make you feel amazing! And can very seriously prevent long-term pain and dysfunction that could lead to myriad injuries and musculoskeletal diseases. I often say that The Roll Model® Method classes are not the “Primrose Path” the feeling good. They aren’t a pharmaceutical shortcut that masks the problem or a quick surgery that could lead to a constellation of other issues down the road. In these classes you might experience some initial discomfort as you feel the effects of your daily life on your body. But it is incredibly rewarding to take control of your own health and wellness, face those discomforts, remove them, and let your body act as the self-healing mechanism it’s designed to be. So exciting. Ariel Kiley, The Roll Model® Method Therapy Ball/Rx Series’ Teacher ArielKileyYoga.com

NYC DANCE PROJECT What is a NYC Dance Project Class? Every week, we learn a dance specifically choreographed to a popular song. The styles vary from hip hop to jazz to contemporary, but more often than not, we are shaking our a$$es like Beyonce back-up dancers. Why try it? Many people who take New York City Dance Project have some prior dance experience (or at least a love of dance) and are looking for a place to learn additional skills. But the class is filled with dancers of all levels, and everyone walks out feeling sexy, sweaty, and ready for MTV! Abby Goldenberg, Teacher of New York City Equinox.com

SALT OF THE EARTH

THE ANCIENT PRACTICE OF DRY SALT THERAPY LIVES ON THANKS TO NEW YORK’S BREATHE EASY. During an average day, we breathe nearly 25,000 times. It’s such a basic part of our existence we barely stop to think about it. For some however, something as basic as breathing can be a challenge. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that 25.9 million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma, with numbers increasing each year as our air quality decreases. It’s one of the reasons Breathe Easy was created. For centuries Halotherapy or Salt Therapy has been used to heal. The extraordinary properties of this now everyday commodity are well documented throughout history. Wars have been waged, economies built upon the trade of salt. Apart from flavoring our favorite dishes, salt reduces inflammation. It’s anti-viral, antibacterial and super absorbent. The micro-particles of salt also have a beneficial influence to the protective layer of the skin and hair providing healing and cosmetic effects. Think about how good you feel after a swim

in the ocean or a day at the beach. This is all due to the healing properties of salt. Breathe Easy amplifies these qualities in their Dry Salt Rooms. The floors are covered with layers of Pink Himalayan salt —like sand on the beach. The walls are covered in Pink Himalayan Salt bricks to generate negative ions to stimulate a relaxation response. Pure salt (NaCl) is then ground into tiny micro particles by a state-of-theart Halogenerator which releases it into the air. All you have to do is sit, back, relax and breathe easy. A Breathe Easy Salt Room Therapy session lasts 25 minutes and requires nothing more than deep breathing and relaxation. Other services include Salty Yoga, Salt Massage and sessions in Breathe Easy’s therapeutic salt beds – a powerfully concentrated dry salt therapy experience. From allergies to sleep apnea, eczema to skin aging, dry salt therapy is a natural, organic way to counteract the harmful effects of our modern-day world. Give it a try. BreatheEasyUSA.com — A.G.
