EDITOR’S NOTE

I

f there’s one thing you must do before you die, it’s strut down Park Avenue to a killer soundtrack. You’ve seen it done a thousand times on the big screen and let me tell you, it’s just as satisfying as it looks. The hustle and bustle of the city streets creates it’s own rhythm and soon, you’ll find yourself keeping time with the best of them. And as you begin to tire of sashaying past Chanel and sidling up to Ralph Lauren, simply extend one well-manicured hand, hail a New York taxi and treat yourself. Perhaps a glass of champagne at The Ritz or high tea at The Plaza, whatever you decide to do, sit back, relax and watch the streets of Manhattan come alive to your own city soundtrack. Have no doubt that music has the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. When words fail us, we use music. When our heart breaks, we find solace in a song. When we’re afraid our courage will fail us, a tune will come to our rescue. Which brings us to this, our music issue. To me, music and fashion are inexplicably entwined. And so we’ve collated some of our favorite tunes, our favorite heels and our favorite people to provide the perfect soundtrack to your spring. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

WE WILL ROCK YOU

W

e asked some of our favorite designers if they work better with our without music. Rock on!

AMSALE ABERRA DESIGNER AMSALE.COM “Music is mood driven for me but I prefer silence when designing.”

ANYI LU FOUNDER ANYILU.COM “I design best without music. Well, without music from an iPad or radio. I like to be able to hear my inner voice and thoughts while designing and be a part of my natural surroundings. I appreciate the sound of wind, rain, birds and the occasional dog barking. However, man-made music is just slightly overwhelming to me during my design process.”

KILIAN KERNER DESIGNER KILIANKERNER.DE “I listen to music every day. Couldn’t live without it. My career started because of music and all my shows are accompanied by live music. Music helps me to underline my emotions for a collection.“

HEAVEN HAS HEELS april 2014

GIANLUCA TAMBURINI DESIGNER & FOUNDER CONSPIRACY.IT “During the creative imagination of a model I usually listen to music. For example, my model Biotech was born while listening to the wonderful ‘All is full of love’ by Bjork. ‘All is Full of Love’ is an elegant, moving description of two Björk robots in love. As they are pieced and wired into existence, they sing to each other and fall in love. The robots join in embrace while still being detailed by the industrial machines beside them. When I first saw the video, directed by Chris Cunningham, I wrote down the words “sexual,” “technological,” “polished,” “frozen,” “passion,” “delicate.” This video is a combination of several fetishes: industrial robotics, female anatomy and fluorescent light in that order. This combination inspires me everyday of my life. “Biotech” style is a perfect example of what I mean. Now “Byotech” is in permanent exhibition at The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and I’m proud of it and all thanks to the music. However, when drawing I remain in absolute silence. I focus on the lines, volumes, on the smallest details: to do that requires the utmost concentration.”

STACY HERZOG BERK & SARAH REID CO-FOUNDERS & DESIGNERS FRIEDAANDNELLIE.COM “When we are in the zone and drawing and making jewelry we need groovy tunes. Currently loving Valerie June and Van Morrison.”

DENISE FOCIL DESIGNER ASTARSWOMENS.COM | ASBYDF.COM “If I am designing or putting together a collection, music is a must. It sets the mood for every season and makes the ideas flow—now if you ask me that same question when I am crunching numbers or doing the not so fun part of my job, then I need absolute silence! Every season I design a collection to a soundtrack which I put on repeat over and over until the line is done! Usually it’s rock & roll, since that’s my preference but it varies. This Spring 2014 collection I listened to Astrud Gilberto (Brazilian Goddess) when designing AS by DF and the Buena Vista Social Club album when I designed ASTARS. The bright colors & sexy feel of the music is carried throughout the two collections!”

HEAVEN HAS HEELS april 2014

KUULA + JYLHÄ CO-FOUNDERS & DESIGNERS KUULAJYLHA.COM “Music often deepens the concentration and might lead us into the right mood, so we definitely work better with music. Lately Marika has been listening a lot to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and Essi has been listening to Daughter’s song ‘Still’ on repeat.”

LINNIE MCLARTY DESIGNER LINNIEMCLARTY.COM “I work better with music. No question. Everything is better with a soundtrack! I often feel my work has elements of whatever I’ve been listening to running through it, but maybe that’s just me. When I’m working at the bench there’s a natural rhythm of sawing, hammering, filing... and music keeps it all ticking along. When I’m in the studio sketching or at the computer music just keeps me on the path. I choose the tracks though. Definitely not a radio station.”

TEA PETROVIC DESIGNER TEA-PETROVIC.COM “I work best without music.”

RUTH SIBBALD CO-FOUNDER & DESIGNER ZOEANDMORGAN.COM “We come from a past of design and music. Growing up Zoe, Morgan and I made jewelery in our dad’s workshop and had fun being creative. In our ’20s, Zoe married a bass player and Morgan organized huge dance parties and festivals. After that, we decided to form the brand, Zoe and Morgan, and all work together designing and making jewelery. Music has always been a big part of what we do. We find inspiration, relaxation and fun in music.”

CAROLIN HOLZHUBER

R

emember Barbie and the Rockers? Well, designer Carolin Holzhuber was never satisfied with their costumes nor any of Barbie’s clothes for that matter so early on she began designing her own collection but it was footwear that finally captured her attention. “When I started my BA in fashion design in Vienna I was sure that I wanted to design women’s wear,” says Holzhuber. “During my studies we had to try four different workshops— dressmaking, knitwear, shoe making and millinery. I ended up in footwear because I love the smell and feel of leather and in the end, the craft of footwear fascinated me more.” Holzhuber’s work is on the forefront of footwear design—sculptural works of wearable art that provoke discussions as to the role of footwear in our world. “I saw shoe making as a personal challenge to concentrate on one part of the human body, the foot,” says Holzhuber. “In fashion, for me, it’s all about the details. Footwear is a very important detail of the whole outfit. But footwear can also be a work of art that pushes the boundaries of what a shoes is.” In her latest collection ‘Conjoined Illusion,’ Holzhuber experiments with traditional footwear techniques and the latest technological advances combining leather with new and innovative materials such as carbon fibre. She ventured into 3D printing for the soles of her shoes, something she admits

was an intimidating but worthwhile endeavor. As for inspiration, Holzhuber is influenced by what she sees and feels—everyday objects and occurrences that alight her imagination. “The concept behind my last collection was about mirroring, reflection and conjoined twins,” explains Holzhuber. “During my research I saw mirroring everywhere in my daily life so I thought I have to work with this topic. My intention is that people look closer at objects and do not see them just as one piece. I want them to discover all the different parts that an object contains and also discover its hidden beauty.” As Holzhuber heads into the future she hopes to create one or two sculptural footwear pieces and then produce a derivative ready-to-wear collection—shoes that are at home in someone’s wardrobe and on display in an art gallery. “Of course in our daily life we need shoes that are comfortable, easy to walk in and good for our feet. But they already exist. My intention is to design and make sculptural footwear that somehow confuses, disturbs or grasps the spectator’s interest. With my work I want to challenge the eyes and the mind. Footwear is not just about being wearable. It is about the wonderful materials, all the little steps and details that make a pair of shoes a wonderful luxury product.” We couldn’t agree more. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

F

estival season is fast approaching, how do these touring artist stay stylish on the go? We find out.

PONY BOY Blonde bombshell, Pony Boy (aka Marchelle Bradanini) knows what it takes to stay stylish on the road—from couture casualties to good times with red heels. Flats or five inches? Five inches. Life is short. What three accessories always accompany you on tour? An amazing red leather doctor’s bag I bought in a Glasgow thrift store for £12; one of my Grandfather’s old Pendleton flannels and a good book. Do you remember the first pair of heels you ever bought? I found a pair of secondhand Chanel Black Suede high heels in mint condition, which I wore until no shoemaker could save them. Do you have a lucky pair of shoes? A pair of simple red high heels. We’ve had a lot of good times together. If you could sum up your style in one song, what would it be? Tammy Wynette’s, “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” or “Red Shoes” by Elvis Costello.

Twin sister duo MACEDO, took the music industry by storm with their debut LP ‘Flags & Boxes.’ Having just released their follow up, ‘Paper Doll’ we caught up with the dynamic duo to talk style, simplicity and the importance of lucky shoes. Flats or five inches? Michelle: Um...definitely flats! I am more comfortable in flats. Once my feet hurt I’m done. Melissa: I only wear heels that I love and I am willing to sacrifice comfort for style! What three accessories always accompany you on tour? Michelle: I have a vintage pocket watch on a long chain that I got from a flea market in Hollywood with our amazing stylist, Chandra Dyani. I have to have that necklace. I also have these earrings from India that I love. They remind me of where I come from and I like everything I wear to have a story with it. Every piece of jewelry has its own story. I have a blazer I got from a vintage store that Chandra also helped me pick out. It goes with me everywhere, it’s comfortable and fits well. Melissa: I got this amazing black vintage Dior dress that I love to wear on tour from a flea market. When I tried it on in the flea market it felt like it was made just for me. I knew I had to have it. It’s very classic and I loved it because it channels Audrey Hepburn. I have a necklace from India that is fantastic. There is so much beautiful jewelry in India. Every time we go we stock up on lots of it! It has multiple silver chains and goes perfect with most necklines. I have these heels from Free People that I fell in love with. They are so unique. They have an 18th century style about them and surprisingly it goes with everything. I always get complements on them whenever we’re on tour. HEAVEN HAS HEELS april 2014

Do you remember the first pair of heels you ever bought? Melissa: We were very close to our grandmother. She always gave us so much of her awesome stuff, including her heels because we happened to be the same foot size. Rummaging through her closet was a necessity of any holiday. They were very formal and she wore them when she was in her twenties. Michelle: Yes! We were obsessed with this great vintage chain in L.A. called Out of the Closet. Part of the proceeds go to AIDS research. I remember buying these heels that I thought were amazing and they were probably at least 20 years old. They were worn and tattered but I felt so feminine in them. Do you have a lucky pair of shoes? Michelle: I have these heels that look like they are from the 1920s. They are not but they have a great classic look. I wore them on the subway once and an older woman came up to me and asked me if they were vintage. She sat me down and told me these amazing stories about her life. I would say that’s lucky! Melissa: A friend of mine gave me a pair of these beautiful handmade heels from Mexico city. Wherever I go it reminds me of how lucky I am. If you could sum up your style in one song, what would it be? Michelle: My song would be “California” by Joni Mitchell. Not only do I relate to her lyrics of heartbreak but I am sensitive, sassy and poetic. Melissa: My song would be “Honeysuckle Rose” by Anita O’Day. Her style is so elegant, poised and classy. She commits to every song and my philosophy is to commit to everything and anything you love.

LIZ RODRIGUES She’s the voice of Eminem’s “Survival” and Queen Bee of The New Royales, Portuguese songstress Liz Rodrigues reminisces about her first pair of Jellies and her go-to heels of choice.

Do you remember the first pair of heels you ever bought? I don’t remember the first pair of heels but I do remember the first pair of Jelly shoes.

Flats or five inches? Flats most of the time...heels when necessary. I love my heels too!

Do you have a lucky pair of shoes? Hm... no lucky pair of shoes. I’ve got a great pair of ‘go-to’ nude pumps though.

What three accessories always accompany you on tour? Hair clip, charm bracelet, sneakers.

If you could sum up your style in one song, what would it be? I don’t know, a song about throwing my hair up in a pony tail and getting into a snug pair of jeans...I’m sure there are plenty!

STEPPINGout ALEKSANDRA KIELPINSKA

“In today’s world you can literally wear a bin bag and someone somewhere will think it looks amazing. When it comes to shoes it’s not that simple. In my opinion, shoes are more important because they are as much a piece of clothing as they are an accessory, so they have to be perfect.” Welcome to the world of Aleksandra Kielpinska.

unique, like they are the stars of their own movie, even if that means they have to bring ballerinas to change into on the way home.”

Originally aspiring to work in fashion design, it was Kielpinska’s own frustration at not being able to find the perfect pair of shoes to complete an outfit that spurred her on to pursue footwear design. “I have always Shoes with soul. That’s how this young design wanted to be involved with clothes,” says talent likes to describe her creations. A lover Kielpinska. “The dream when I was younger of ballet, Kielpinksa’s latest collection was was to work for Alexander McQueen—I inspired by ‘Body Remix & Les Variations love his work, every design is a piece of art. Goldber’ a contemporary dance piece But the more I looked at clothes the more choreographed by Marie Chouinard. I realized there were no shoes I liked to go with them. I started looking into shoe design “I have dreams about shoes,” says Kielpinska. and as cliché as it sounds, it was love at first “The simplest thing can bring such vivid sight. I was good at it, I enjoyed it and I was images that I cannot stop thinking about bursting with ideas.” it.” It’s these images that set the tone for her creations. From a window display to a As with any contemporary footwear designer picture in a magazine; contemporary dance bringing those ideas to life can be a fine to architecture, Kielpinska’s capacity for line between pleasure and pain. “Every creative inspiration seems limitless and has new design I make is a challenge,” admits been one of the primary reasons this young Kielpinska. “I like to use new materials and designer has been attracting world wide ever time I do, it’s a bit of a gamble. Is it attention. That doesn’t mean however, these going to work the way I’d like it to? It’s not shoes are made for walking. like I don’t like to use conventional methods but I like to experiment; to always find “I don’t mind a little pain with my shoes,” new ways I can do things differently. Being says Kielpinska. “For me, it’s important the challenged is what pushes you forward and shoes look good and of course, I would if you’re not challenged you may as well stop like someone who wears my designs to be designing.” And for this young designer that comfortable but personally I’m looking is simply not an option. — NICOLE ROSS for the ‘wow’ factor. PLAY THAT KNOT BY TIFFA

It all starts with a song, at least that’s the case for knot by TIFFA’s creative director Tiffany Rogers. We caught up with the driving force behind the brand as they get set to launch their latest collection, Sweet Awakening. What role does music play when you design? Music is the most important inspiration for my design process. It’s what triggers the development of the collection; drives the color palette and prints, and influences how we develop the marketing story of the collection. The process starts with the development of a playlist, for me it’s like a mood board. I play with the positioning of the songs, bring in outside influences and explore different artists and genres. Once the playlist is set, the color palette and prints are developed from the music inspiration. The color palette keeps the collection cohesive, while the prints allow for each bow tie to express the personality of the song. Once everything is set into production, we have to develop a story for the collection and each bow tie, which is something we’ve been working hard on. Do you have one particular style of music that inspires you? I can’t say there is one style that inspires me more than others. It depends on the mood and the season that we’re thinking about. To me, some seasons evoke different types of music naturally. For spring, light, upbeat music is what I want to listen to, I want to get energized. For summer, fun is just around the corner. So, that’s how Sweet Awakening started with electronic music. But then after wanting to

funky

music

dig deeper into down tempo and soul music, the playlist remained upbeat but had some deeper moments for me to work within the collection. How did you get into accessory design? To be honest, we’ve never really considered knot by TIFFA to be an accessory line, even though that’s exactly what we are. We started with bow ties, because we saw the need in the market for more exciting bow ties and the production was not too intensive. But we are working to grow TIFFA into a menswear—and eventually—womenswear brand, keeping the musical inspiration and playful aesthetic. I started in contemporary womenswear for the Tracy Reese Collection, where I really strengthened my print and embellishment design skills, so we will continue to bring those strengths into developing new lines for TIFFA. I see a need in menswear for interesting and tactful print use, and so I think we can fill that space by being accepted first as an accessories company and then grow into apparel. What’s been your crowning achievement so far? I think each achievement adds a jewel to our crown. Each print placement, blog post, shout out on social media really gives us a little more recognition and adds to our momentum. We’ve had some great people wear knot by TIFFA: Olympic Figure Skater Jeremy Abbott, Comedian Paul F. Tompkins, Singer/Songwriter Mayer Hawthorne and a few others and had some great press placements. They all just elevate us towards more recognition in the fashion industry.
