EDITOR’S NOTE

I

n an article entitled The Rules of Instagram, Hayley Bloomingdale the editorial and social media editor for Moda Operandi wrote on Vogue.com, “If your picture doesn’t get more than eleven likes, you need to take it down because it sucks. Note: This applies to users with 100 followers or more. If you are new and have fewer than 100 followers, then hurry up and get cooler.” In a world obsessed with “likes” and “followers,” we’ve lost sight of the positive power of social media. It’s not a judgment platform designed to make you feel bad about yourself. It’s about tapping into a virtual community of like-minded individuals to share your views, passions and creativity to the world. The early adopters of these platforms weren’t buying friends or creating strategies to attract brand sponsorship; they were sharing. The gratification didn’t come from likes (bought or earned) it came from mustering the courage to post in the first place. I’ve been in the publishing world for over a decade, before that, I toured the world as a performer. What I’ve learned is that creativity comes in all shapes and sizes. What may appeal to one person, may not register for another but the fact is,

there is beauty in everything — from the froth on our morning coffee to the heirloom ring I’m wearing as I write this piece — not everyone will see it, but it is there. In this our Boots & Beauty issue we reflect on what beauty is, as defined by individuals we admire. If you’re a loyal follower of ours you’ll notice that our editorial isn’t designed to highlight the brands with the most followers or active social media teams, it’s based upon merit, creativity, passion and courage. History shows us that the great innovators of our time did not attract the “likes” of the masses. It was decades after they were laid to rest, that the world truly began to appreciate their work. So please don’t be discouraged by the shallow side of social media. Focus on what you love, not what loves you. Until next time, may your heels be as high as your standards,

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU LOVE, NOT WHAT LOVES YOU

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION LONDON FOOTWEAR DESIGNER ALEXANDER WHITE PUTS HIS BEST FOOT FORWARD WITH HIS EPONYMOUS LINE OF HEAVENLY HEELS. What attracted you to footwear design? Initially, I had planned to study architecture, but at the last minute I changed my application to Design and Applied Arts. I specialized in fashion and noticed that I was more excited about designing the shoes and the ‘look,’ than the actual clothes. After graduating, I made the switch and enrolled at Cordwainers College. What’s your design philosophy? To create chic, elegant shoes with a youthful twist. What do you love most about being a footwear designer? The realization of your ideas and dreams. It’s always been about creating, and I still get excited when new designs come in from the factory. I’m currently sketching my new collection and when I get an idea; usually in the shower, I get so excited about what’s about to come. What are three things you know now, that you wish you knew when you started out? In terms of design, there’s not much that has shocked me. The biggest learning curve has been on the business side. I’d have to say I knew it would be hard, but it’s harder. I wish I had known how supportive some people in the industry can be. Sara Maino and Vogue Italia have been so fantastic. Finally, I wish I knew how difficult it is to balance all of my work. From working in a design team to starting off being the Lone Ranger has been trying, but luckily I have a good network of people who have been so kind.

consider the comfort. For me, good design consists of not only aesthetic design but how well a product serves its purpose. If a designer creates shoes that are painful, then the purpose isn’t being met and, therefore, the design fails because the shoes will be admired and never worn. However, quality comes into play with all design. I recently made a bespoke pair of wedding shoes. At the end of the wedding, the bride was still wearing my shoes, she had been dancing all night without a problem. While the bridesmaids wore cheaper shoes and had to take them off because of the pain. For me, that means a lot. She’s since bought two pairs of shoes from me.

“FOR ME, GOOD

DESIGN CONSISTS OF NOT ONLY AESTHETIC DESIGN BUT HOW WELL A PRODUCT SERVES ITS PURPOSE.”

What exciting developments do you have in the works? The whole AltaRoma Vogue Italia Who is On Next? experience was incredible, and I’m very much looking forward to Milan fashion week. — AlexanderWhiteLondon.com

Can comfort and style coexist in footwear? Definitely. I think it’s a disservice to the customer if you don’t

THE BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAILS FOR MODEL-TURNEDFOOTWEAR DESIGNER SUSANA TRACA.

W

e are all shaped by our experiences; the world in which we grow up. For footwear designer Susana Traca, her heritage, travel and unique sense of style are the key elements in her showstopping creations. “I usually combine my African style with my Portuguese background, to give a metropolitan soul to my creations,” says the young designer. “Thanks to my Angolan background, my collections are always full of colors with African details and natural materials.” Her latest collection, Urban Tribe, mixes an element of street style with catwalk sophistication utilizing laser cuts and geometric prints in neoprene, lurex and laminated fabrics. The result is an homage to her hometown of Angola with a European flair that sees each design at home on any metropolitan street, much like the designer herself. Growing up in the Heart of Africa, Traca moved to Portugal to study at the age of fourteen. She soon found herself traveling throughout Europe as a model. With an eye for design, she began working behind-the-scenes for several well-known brands and gravitated towards footwear. “I decided to launch my shoe brand in 2010 because I felt a strong need

to express my style through footwear,” says Traca. “I spent a lot of my life in Portugal, where I met a lot of shoes suppliers that showed me the manufacturing steps, it was so interesting! I love to see my creations’ birth!” Traca believes in beauty and comfort, insisting on highquality materials and manufacturing. A perfectionist at heart, she is all about the details, creating feminine silhouettes with an edge. “I would like that women wearing my shoes would feel fashionable, strong, and more self-confident in my shoes,” she says. Her line encompasses a variety of styles from kneehigh boots to fabulous flats, all created to inspire. “My greatest satisfaction is to give women the opportunity to wear something that can elicit strong emotions,” says Traca. With a growing market for her stylish aesthetic, expect to see much more from this up-andcoming footwear brand. SusanaTraca.com — J.S.

SLIP ON IN REINVENTING A FOOTWEAR FAVORITE IS ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR RISING STAR DUKE & DEXTER.

T

hey say variety is the spice of life for us, it’s the key to fabulous footwear. While we love our heavenly heels and sky-high stilettos, chic flats complete any well-styled wardrobe. Finding the perfect pair however, is not as easy as one may expect. Ill-fitting uppers, shoddy workmanship and a lack of support often tarnish a beloved footwear staple. Enter London brand Duke & Dexter, a brand that takes slip-ons to a whole new, and exciting level. Duke & Dexter was created to fill a void in the marketplace for high-quality yet affordable slip-on shoes, explains CEO and Creative Director Archie Hewlett. It blends British Heritage with Global inspiration to provide a contemporary take on a footwear favorite. The concept, was to transform the much-loved velvet slipper from indoor wear to ready-to-wear — an item to be dressed up or dressed down. By producing ontrend variations of differing patterns, textures, and colors, Duke & Dexter quickly attracted a loyal clientele eager for chic comfort at an affordable price point. From camouflage print to classic shades, these designs take their inspiration from the past with updated manufacturing techniques that spur them into the future. For example, their signature velvet is a short, non shiny, brush velvet that enhances the brands solid,

clean colors. Other materials such as canvas, linen, pony hair, quilt and needlepoint, are used to give the designs a contemporary feel. And then, of course, there are the practical elements “Comfort is key,” says Hewlett. “You might explode with sales initially due to your innovative designs and brilliant marketing, but if customers are unable to physically enjoy wearing your shoes, then your brand has no longevity to it.” The brand sources materials from near and wide, “the more extravagant, the better.” But it is the brands home base which gives the brand a grounded outlook. “Being based in London allows us to remain in constant touch with the traditional aspects of a British velvet slipper and the associations, clients, and grandeur one should expect from such a shoe,” says Hewlett. “Simultaneously, London allows us to embrace the contemporary world of shoe fashion at the very best level. A perfect harmony of the two is what we’re all about!” With global expansion on the horizon and its own independent retail store set to open in Central London, this is one brand who’s bringing sexy back, one slipper at a time. WALK ON BY DESIGNED IN AUSTRALIA. MADE IN ITALY. FOOTWEAR LABEL ATIANA DESIGNS TIMELESS STAPLES TO ELEVATE YOUR EVERYDAY.

A

quest for the perfect shoe was the catalyst for Atiana, a Sydney-based footwear label founded by Danielle Louise. “I’ve always been creative,” says the Australian designer. “But it was after an internship in New York that I was inspired to step out on my own. Being tall and traveling a lot, I found it hard to find the perfect pair of shoes you could wear with everything, this inspired me to explore that gap in the market.” Exploring the perimeters of form meets function, the designs of Atiana exude a sense of effortless style that has become synonymous with today’s hottest labels. The shoes are created to elevate your everyday with Italian-made footwear conceptualized in Australia.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS october 2015 | @HHHEELS

This street-chic aesthetic has universal appeal not only for its on-trend designs but for its quality manufacturing. It’s something Louise is taking to the International market with great success. This year, the brand showed at London Fashion Week for the first time — “Our most exciting achievement to date.” With Global expansion on the horizon, and a long line of fans waiting in the wings, Atiana’s commitment to creating timeless wardrobe staples is its key to success. Still a relative newcomer in the world of fabulous footwear, we’re excited to watch the evolution of this design favorite. Atiana.co — ANASTASIA RUBEN

HATS OFF

INSPIRED BY A BRITISH SENSIBILITY, RUSSIAN MILLINER IVA KSENEVICH IS INTENT ON CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WELLDRESSED WOMEN. How did you become involved in millinery? All best things happen by accident, and this was the case for me. Unexpectedly, I came to London and fell in love with the city, the people and their style. Hats were everywhere! In Russia, for example, if you see someone wearing proper millinery, they automatically stand out in the crowd. In London, it’s a natural thing. I was amazed. I found a millinery teacher in London, a royal milliner. She was over seventy years old, and used to say, “I’ve been making millinery since I was thirteen, and you know what? It’s never boring!” She was right. What do you love about it compared to other facets of design? Millinery is a very powerful weapon in terms of style and fashion. A hat, like no other accessory, can make your look remarkable and unique. Everybody wears rings, necklaces, earrings, bags but hats are special. If a woman comes to wear millinery, it is a different level of style. For me, millinery pieces are little creations, wearable art, emotions and excitement. For some reason, men just love women in hats. What three elements do you feel are needed to create an amazing headpiece? Order. Movement. Chaos. How do you think your culture heritage contributes to your design aesthetic? Originally, I’m from Belarus, at the moment, I’m based in Moscow. Shipping my pieces worldwide, I consider myself an international designer, studying millinery in London and Paris, inspired by the vibes of these cities. Frankly speaking, Slavic cultural heritage doesn’t really contributes to my designs. In Russia/Belarus, a hat is something more of a practical thing, to keep you warm in a super cold winter for example. Also, those Russian “kokoshnik” are too big and heavy looking. I prefer something more elegant. On the other hand, there are old black and white movies with vintage pillboxes and veils. It’s beautiful, my mother and grandmother wear those. But the layer of classy women in postSoviet countries is unfortunately pretty thin.

1.) plastic net, it is very flexible and gives an amazing effect when you shape it properly. It has an air about it and at the same time builds up interesting forms. 2.) All sorts of textiles. I am a very tactile person, and it’s not only about the look, but also about the touch. I choose finest materials such as artificial suede, leather, silk, wool, plush etc. 3.) I like taking time decorating, adding details, sparkling accents. So the third one would be crystals. It’s not a problem to spend a day sewing those up to the piece the result is what matters.

“A HAT, LIKE

NO OTHER ACCESSORY, CAN MAKE YOUR LOOK REMARKABLE AND UNIQUE”

What materials do you most like to work with? I experiment a lot with materials. Right now my favorites are:

What has been your crowning achievement thus far? Oh many, every day is a little achievement. If I had to choose one, I would say seeing my artworks travel the world and fit people from different countries and cultures. My hats are worn by celebrities, fashionistas and people who simply love millinery. I see their happy faces, their incredible styles, their positive emotions. That is what I consider my greatest achievement. — IvaKsenevich.com

FALL FASHION TIPS & TRICKS DALE NOELLE, FORMER MODEL AND FOUNDER OF TRUE MODEL MANAGEMENT, SHARES HER TIPS FOR PUTTING YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD THIS FALL.

OUR FAVORITE FALL ESSENTIALS

LAYER, LAYER, LAYER! The season is changing. Be bold! Do not be afraid to layer your clothes as you mix those colors. Always be mindful of styling for your shape; do not disguise your body under a plethora of items, but, rather, mix and match to create a nicely balanced, full ensemble. Try a nice blouse with an outer jacket with an accessory piece such as a belt or a scarf. The great thing about this season is it is the perfect blend of warm and cool. The options are endless.

RECOGNIZE YOUR BODY TYPE The female body varies in shape and size. If you have an hourglass shape, be sure to accentuate your tiny waist line. Belted jackets that cinch around the waist will bring your shape much positive attention. For the apple-shaped, or rounded, female, focus on the shoulders and leg area; this will minimize your midsection, and create the S-curve illusion. Flowy fall tops or swing coats for chillier weather will be the most flattering. If you are noticeably heavier in the midsection and have a slim lower body (carrying all the weight toward the tummy area), aim for cropped jackets with banded bottoms that will again, create the illusion of a smaller waist. Pear shaped women with wider hips should accentuate their top halves and create balance. Structured jackets with details and fun patterns draw the attention to the top half of the body. A diversion of the attention to the lower half will create a more balanced body perspective. Remember, all bodies are different, and it is up to you to decide what is more aesthetically pleasing. The key to styling for your body is creating the shape you desire.

BE MINDFUL OF THE COLORS OF THE SEASON

THE CLASSIC BLAZER ALEXANDER MCQUEEN TAILORED BLAZER, FARFETCH.COM

THE GO-TO BAG SJP BY SARAH JESSICA PARKER MADISON BAG, COUTURE.ZAPPOS.COM

Earthy neutrals are in this season. Fashion forecasters have foreseen sage, rose, and ranges of bold colors reflecting landscape (full of blues, browns, greens, and grays) as the colors of the upcoming fall season. Choose the color(s) that pop(s) against your skin. Do not be afraid to mix and match the colors. Fall is colorful in itself. Stay festive.

WEAR YOUR CONFIDENCE No matter what garment you wear, remember you are carrying it; do not let it carry you. The most important piece you carry with every outfit will be your confidence. Your confidence stays with you through all four seasons and will be consistently striking, if exercised daily.

RUNWAY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MODA LISBOA AUTUMN/WINTER 2015

FACES OF FASHION WEEK IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO PUT TOGETHER THE WORLD’S MOST RENOWNED FASHION WEEKS. WE GO BEHINDTHE-SCENES AND HEAD FRONT ROW TO ASK PORTUGAL’S MOVERS AND SHAKERS, WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MODALISBOA, LISBON FASHION WEEK?

I love ModaLisboa. It’s such an amazing and exciting time of the year. As press office coordinator at ModaLisboa, I’m always really busy and literally running all the time. However, I try to find the time to attend some shows and when I can’t, I get to see the collections backstage, it’s the ideal place to get in touch with the designers, the models, the stylists, hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, press, and all kind of artists. Besides the shows, I get very excited with the looks that people put together for this occasion. Street style is a huge source of inspiration for me.

MANUELA OLIVEIRA PRESS OFFICE COORDINATOR, MODALISBOA

I love ModaLisboa because I started here as a model, eighteen years ago, so I have a kind of a emotional connection to the event and the staff. Now, I work as the Director of Styling Project Mag StylingProjectMag.com so I’m looking for seasonal content for editorials, and outfits for my personal styling clients. I love the mix between the emerging designers and the more established ones. I always feel inspired by the street style, because that’s where we see the catwalk continue on the street and that is interesting, and always entertaining.

It’s always fun meeting with old friends and colleagues. Three days full of work, laughter and cool energy!

MICHAEL GOMES INTERNATIONAL BOOKER, JUST MODEL MANAGEMENT

After twenty-five editions as the official catwalk photographer, ModaLisboa is like coming home (with my big family) and catching up with friends. It’s lots of work but lots of fun. The fashion world is like a gold mine for a photographer. I love to help Portuguese designers share their creations.

RAW & REAL IN A WORLD OF FILTERS AND NON-REALITY TV, IS THE NO MAKEUP SELFIE CHANGING THE WAY WE VIEW BEAUTY?

@LADYGAGA

@CHRISSYTEIGAN

@HEIDIKLUM

It’s 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I’m sitting on the porch watching the lobster boats come in. I want to capture the moment—myself, the view, this wonderful opportunity, but I’ve decided that this vacation will be makeup free. I hesitate. In a world obsessed with filters; one that makes millions off non-Reality TV, doing something as simple as being photographed without makeup has been labeled “brave.” And it made me think, does something as seemingly inconsequential deserve to be dubbed bravery, or is this simply another ploy to illicit compliments from complete strangers? There’s no denying that social media is the Pandora’s Box of communication. It’s connected us, giving people a voice and an opportunity to speak their minds. It’s also exposed us to judgment from complete strangers who often comment behind a mask of anonymity. Although I believe in the “sticks and stones” approach, sometimes words do hurt. Lately however, it’s been celebrities who have been fighting for a little perspective when it comes to beauty. Aubrey Plaza, Gina Rodriguez, Sophia Bush all posed makeup free for People Style Watch in a fresh-faced editorial. They each commented on how liberating it was, to pose makeup free. “I think there’s a nice point of self acceptance that you reach in life when you can say, ‘This is me’,” said Sophia

Bush on the behind-the-scenes video for the shoot. All natural beauties, these shots were taken in great lighting in carefully curated locations, Vanity Fair’s well-publicized Hollywood issue featured a less flattering approach capturing everyone from Kate Winslet to Scarlett Johansen in raw, untouched images shot against a plain background. These pulled no beauty punches. “They have to give up a great deal of vanity in order to do it,” photographer Chuck Close told Vanity Fair. “And it takes a real act of generosity and faith on the part of the subject to go with it and to give me their image without having any control over what’s gonna happen.” This real and raw approach was taken to a whole new level when Tyra Banks posted an unfiltered, no makeup Instagram pic she hashtagged #RawandReal. And it was. Reading her comment and those of her followers, I had to admit, it was brave. For a woman who has built a career on her looks, sharing a completely raw picture, was a decision she did not take lightly. And yet, a simple act like this, reminds us, that we are all human; that while striving for perfection is a worthwhile goal, accepting yourself — in the good and the bad — is the true path to happiness. We are more than our makeup, a social media message I can definitely get behind. — ANGELA GILLTRAP
