IN HER SHOES STEPPING OUT WITH DORHOUT MEES.

F

ashion goes far beyond fabric. It’s a form of expression that projects our inner most thoughts and feelings; personifying the way in which we see ourselves. For Dutch designer Esther Dorhout Mees—founder of ready-to-wear label Dorhout Mees—it’s a way to tell a story, and underline the beauty and power of women the world over. Based in Amsterdam, Mees delivers conceptual, yet wearable designs that are inspired by her global fashion journey. Here, you will find the glamour of her stay in L.A., the casual elegance of her atelier-base in Amsterdam and the clean, sharp lines of Copenhagen. Drawn to design from an early age, Mees moved to the U.S. to study fashion and photography at seventeen. On her return, she began working for Tommy Hilfiger later going onto further study at ArtEZ Academy of Arts in Arnhem. After working as a designer for various labels,

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2015 | @HHHEELS

Mees decided it was time to go it alone. “After all these years studying and working for other brands, I felt I had something else to say and that this was the time to say it,” says Mees. ”This was when I started Dorhout Mees.” Natural materials form the basis of her eponymous line, but it’s the unexpected elements that give each design an air of originality. “I love to work with all silks, wools, cashmere...” says Mees. “But I also like to work with materials that would not be considered wearable per se and make them wearable. Like copper, wood or glass. I like the contrasts.” So how would Mees hope a woman feels in her designs? “I love this question because that is what it is all about for me,” says Mees. “I want her to feel empowered, beautiful, unique and relaxed all at the same time. Because her beauty and confidence are for her to enjoy.” Dorhout-Mees.com — JULIA STUART

SHIELD MAVEN

CHARLENE ONG’S FORCE MAJEURE.

A

lways dress as if you’re going to meet your worst enemy. It’s one of our favorite sayings and these Shield shoes, are the kind of head-turning creations we long for. Not only are they unique, but they are as inspiring as their creator Charlene Ong. “I have always been a creative individual and as cliché as it may sound, I have always been passionate about shoes. However, I never thought that I could actually pursue a career in footwear designing,” says Ong. “Previously, I was working in PR and would walk by the London College of Fashion everyday whilst en route to one of our clients. One day I decided to go in to inquire about the role of being a footwear designer and what I would need to do to become one. I was encouraged to prepare a portfolio in my own time and apply for the course at Cordwainers, thankfully I was accepted and it was the best decision I’ve ever made!” Drawing inspiration from science fiction, Ong’s creations are wearable pieces of art. They are designed with multiple goals in mind, one being innovation. “I think it is extremely important to constantly challenge the paradigms of footwear design,” she says. “This is not only with regards to its aesthetic but to the processes involved in footwear manufacturing. Chau Har Lee challenged traditional footwear methods by attempting to reduce the number of processes involved in the production of shoes. She did so without sacrificing the consideration of creating something beautiful. I believe that this constant strive to re-create and push boundaries is an essential practice across all fields of design, not just in fashion.” Sustainability is also an important aspect. “We should be designing with the intention of creating shoes that can last a lifetime,” she says. “As opposed to the throw-away culture that we currently live in.” Finally, it’s the trans-formative quality of design that

excites this up-and-coming designer. After all, why limit our fashion choices to the mundane and practical when you can have the surreal? Balancing this lust for creative innovation with practical applications however, can be a challenge, one Ong is well aware of. “As a designer, you constantly crave the new and exciting but you also desire seeing your designs actually being worn. So as tempting as it may be, you can never design with pure indulgence.” With numerous projects in the works, you can rest assured we will be seeing more of Charlene Ong’s out-of-this-world creations. In the meantime, we will dare to dream of these heavenly heels. CharleneOng. co.uk — NICOLE ROSS

SPELLBOUND

THE INNOVATIVE DESIGNS OF KEI KAGAMI.

K

ei Kagami is not driven by fame or fortune, rather he creates with a desire to push the boundaries of what seems possible; to challenge our idea of the everyday. Combining his skill as a fashion designer, tailor and architect, his conceptual designs have cemented his place among fashion’s most innovative—it’s been a lifetime in the making. Kagami was born and raised in Tokyo, moving to London in 1989 to work alongside John Galliano. When the label shut its doors three seasons later, he chose to stay on in London enrolling at Saint Martins College with classmates Alexander McQueen and Wakako Kishimoto. “I haven’t really achieved anything,” laughs Kagami. “Especially in business. But when FIT museum in New York purchased one of our HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2015 | @HHHEELS

conceptual pieces for their permanent collection, I felt I culturally contributed to the business of fashion.” The BBC news remains one of his greatest sources of inspiration when it comes to designing footwear, but he is quick to point out that he is first and foremost a fashion designer. “We rely on our ready-to-wear designs as a business,” says Kagami. “We don’t make any profit at all from our shoe collection. However, it’s important that we keep designing them. It motives our creativity.” And when it comes to creativity, you’d be hard pushed to find a more spellbinding collection as his Hanging Garden Spring/Summer 2015 offering (pictured here). A collection that continues to hold him—and his designs—in the hearts of heavenly heel lovers everywhere. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

Handcrafted in New York City, these strong statement pieces feature under-stated yet powerful silhouettes that appeal to the everyday warrior woman. Quality is particularly important to the Russian-born designer and you will find these pieces adhere to her strict design standards. Each piece is made from sterling silver featuring either black or white diamonds. Chose from the Valkyrie ring, named after the fierce warrior women of Norse mythology. Or perhaps the Bellatrix is more to your liking. Either way, you’re sure to be reminded of your own inner strength with one of these pieces in your collection. ValentinaKova.com — ANASTASIA RUBIN

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. What if you could digitally scroll through the contents of your wardrobe by season? Color? Style? Your own personal visual inventory. Fashion innovator, Mounissa Chodieva, makes this a reality as the founder of Vault Couture. What is Vault Couture? Vault Couture is a virtual wardrobe, digitally accessible 24/7. Clean, organized, perfect. Your favorite looks, travel bags, and wish lists, all in one place, ready to be seamlessly delivered to you anywhere in the world with a butler-style service. So whether you’re a time poor, jet-set business traveler looking to take the hassle out of packing for trips, a collector of haute couture looking to keep your collection in pristine condition, or simply running out of space in your closet and want to store last season’s wardrobe, Vault Couture offers a tailored solution to your wardrobe needs. You don’t have to be short of storage space to enjoy Vault Couture; this service is also perfect for those short of time who love the organization and accessibility we offer, complementing a busy lifestyle perfectly. We professionally photograph each piece in your collection, recording every seam and stitch, creating a virtual wardrobe for you to access. This means you can pull together looks or pack for trips in no-time and without turning your wardrobe upside down in the process! Your garments are then stored in a climate-controlled, air-purified facility in Central London and we facilitate efficient delivery of your pieces wherever and whenever you need them, whether this be your full wardrobe or a capsule collection for frequent travelers to access internationally. What was the inspiration behind launching Vault Couture? The idea was born out of personal need, I am a frequent traveler, often needing to pack quickly and travel at short notice. Lack of time to organize or think through what is actually needed for the trip inspired the concept. A virtual wardrobe allows me to think through my outfits on the go, from anywhere in the world, without turning my closet upside down and having excess luggage. Seeing my wardrobe on my palm allowed me to understand how to make most use of what I already owned. The platform’s capability to search through my wardrobe based on color, season, brand and size are extremely useful for this purpose. So instead of chasing this season’s color pallet by buying more, I could see what I already had in that color, and instead of buying similar, it would drive me to invest in items that would update my looks and compliment the items already owned, make them still relevant and on trend.

I also saw a real need for those who come to London regularly, to be able to store a capsule business wardrobe plus a few items for casual wear instead of dragging them along in a suitcase every time they travel. Items like winter jackets, evening dresses, and tuxedos could be available when needed without the hassle of renting or buying on short notice. How do you think technology has changed the way in which we shop and organize our clothes? Everything has gone digital. We are in an age where technology is advancing so rapidly, and Vault Couture is part of that movement, we recognized the demand for our service and the freedom it offers our clients. What is your background? I am a trained lawyer, and my corporate career evolved with my last public position being the head of Investor Relations and Director of Communication of a public listed company. Today, I am an entrepreneur/ venture capitalist investing in start-ups and growth business. How long did it take to develop Vault Couture? It took us two years to develop the IT system and find the ideal storage premises and equip them to the highest standards to be able to provide required level of care for people’s wardrobes. We launched Vault Couture in 2012 and have big plans for the coming years. What can we expect in 2015 and beyond? Soon we will be introducing a function that lets you rent your items out and receive value for your items while they are advertised for sale until the items are actually sold. It is again an efficient way to recapture maximum value of your items that you no longer desire. — VaultCouture.com

MODERN

warrior WOMEN Modern-day warrior women are passionate, determined and courageous. They don’t follow; they lead. They are continually pushing themselves out of their comfort zone to do more and be more, not in the act of competition but in the pursuit of what they can offer the world. These six women personify these qualities and more. Whether it’s saving lives on the operating table or bringing beauty and tranquility into our homes, they are proof that it’s not the profession, it’s the intention that matters.

LAURA IVORRA FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER LauraIvorra.es

They say a picture says a thousand words, for photographer Laura Ivorra, it speaks volumes. The Spanish beauty moved half a world away to Brooklyn, New York, to pursue a career in the cut-throat world of fashion photography. Her move paid off. Today, she is a highly sought after international photographer contributing to some of the world’s most prestigious magazines—including this one! She didn’t wait for an opportunity to come knocking, she went and found it. While others were partying in the name of networking, she was building her book and honing her craft. Her boundless energy, tireless work ethic and caring spirit make her one of our chosen modern-day warrior women. How did you get into photography? When I was young, my grandfather gave me some money, and I bought a small camera. I started taking pictures of my friends and realized how much I was enjoying it, so I decided to start studying artistic photography. What do you love about it? When I have my camera in my hand, I forget all about my problems. It is my moment to disconnect and see the world from a different point of view. How can images affect the way we feel? I think a picture can be an open window to the imagination, so everybody has a different perception of the same moment. For me, that is the magic of photography.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2015 | @HHHEELS

How do you feel what you do is important? I always try to think that every picture I’m taking is as important as the next. What inspires you? A lot of things. Sometimes my inspiration comes from a book, a person I’ve met, or even a spot. I love to go to McNally Jackson in Soho, grab a coffee and buy a lot of magazines from all over the world. It’s my moment. What’s the best part of your job? The opportunity to meet a lot of different people and the freedom to create my own worlds.

KRISTEN R. SCARPATO UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY

Kristen R. Scarpato is truly a modern-day warrior woman. Holding a masters degree in public health—with a focus on International health care—she is one of a growing number of women entering the traditionally male dominated field of Urology. An area of medicine that is on the cutting edge of technology, Kristen uses her unique skills and expertise to care, not only for her patients here at home, but also in places such as Malawi, a country that is in desperate need of urological care and education. How did you become involved in urology? In medical school, I loved all the clinical rotations (except pediatrics). Deciding on urology was partly the result of being in the right place at the right time. Ultimately, the people and the opportunities within urology are what attracted me most. We are “the happy surgeons.” What did your friends and family think when you decided to pursue this field? My father half in jest, said, “You can’t be a urologist – you’re a woman!” Secretly, I think he was thrilled that one of his eight children followed in his surgical footsteps. All of my friends and family were encouraging though. What do you love about it? This is a difficult question, as I love so much about it. I think most, I love my fellow urologists. In general, urologists are smart, motivated, happy individuals—the kind of people you want to work alongside. The field also attracts people with a good sense of humor. It is definitely important to maintain some humor in medicine.

How do you feel what you do is important? Most urologic cancers—like prostate, kidney, or testicular cancer—can be successfully treated. Patients do very well after being treated and are frequently cured of their cancers. That’s important (and gratifying) in my mind! What inspires you? My family inspires me. My grandparents, parents, and siblings, have all been great role models. They all have solid work ethics. Also, my patients. I see many people with difficult health problems who continue to make the most of their particular situation. I can’t help but want to be the best I can be, for them. What’s the best part of your job? Hm… That’s a toss up between the opportunity to perform really cool robotic surgery or the frequent gratifying patient encounters. Urology is a great mix of surgery and medicine allowing us to have time in the operating room but also significant clinic time to really get to know our patients.

ARIEL KILEY

YOGA & MEDIATION TEACHER, AUTHOR OF SMITTEN: THE WAY OF THE BRILLIANT FLIRT ArielKileyYoga.com It’s 12:50pm on a Tuesday afternoon. A growing crowd of bare-footed New Yorkers wait patiently outside Equinox’ group exercise room at Rockefeller Center. It’s an eclectic mix of people. The one thing they have in common, is their almost-religious attendance of this Vinyasa Flow class. The instructor is Ariel Kiley. The popularity of this class—and the many Kiley takes around the world—is the result of her expertise, quest for knowledge and of course, her personality. Not a class goes by that she doesn’t share a piece of information she has learned; an observation she finds amusing; a series of movements created to inspire. Aside from her classes in Vinyasa Flow, Gentle Yoga and Yoga Therapy, she is a licensed Yoga for Runners and Integrated Yoga Tune Up® instructor. For Ariel Kiley, yoga is more than a trend, it’s an enlightened way of life. How did you become involved in yoga? In my teens, I was very drawn to enlightenment philosophy and constantly sought out books, experiences and teachers that challenged “reality” as I knew it. In my ‘20s, I lived near a yoga studio, so I’d stroll down the street and take really gentle classes. As my practiced deepened, I felt a strange sense of awakening from within. I could suddenly see tiny buds on trees. Life became much more vivid. One thing led to another and then I was teaching yoga full time.

How can yoga affect the way we feel? Through breathing exercises, physical poses, and mindaltering philosophies, yoga literally changes the chemical and hormonal composition in your body and brain. It can make you feel harmonious, energized, centered, courageous and vibrantly alive.

What do you love about it? The practice is designed to bring you home to your unconditioned self while also tuning you into your natural urges to change and evolve. Just as the present moment perpetually renews itself and appears different, within each of us there is something ever-changing and also constant. Yoga shows you how to experience both simultaneously. From there, a sense of revelation and freedom arises.

What’s the best part of your job? Getting to be with people all day! I teach adults and teens throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn and lead training all around the world. I’m also building an Online community called Amazing Day Yoga. Spending so much time interacting with humanity makes me very, very happy.

LUCIA PURON INTERIOR DESIGNER & ART DIRECTOR DecideDesign.Blogspot.es

Sometimes I wish I’d never seen Lucia Peron’s McKibbon Loft, then perhaps I wouldn’t want a swing in my living room. The 1800 square foot Brooklyn loft is an example of Puron’s expertise. As an Interior Designer and Art Director, she is a woman who seems predestined to make the world a more beautiful place. Her job is part translator, part dream maker as she brings to life the ideas, concepts and aspirations of her clients. From private homes to industrial spaces, the goal of this modern-day warrior woman is to transform the world around us into a place that is efficient, livable and elegant. How did you get into interior design? Interior design has been a passion of mine since I can remember. Before I decided to pursue designer as a career, I actually studied chemistry for four years. I took the long way, but in the end I did it and I enjoy it so much. What do you love about what you do? I love beauty and all day I am surrounded by beautiful things. I think that is a luxury and a privilege and I feel tremendously lucky. How can our surroundings effect the way we feel? Our spaces change our moods. We work happier in a beautiful office, we sleep better in a room with light colors, we sell more in a elegant store ... Even food tastes better with a nice presentation. Colors, textures, proportions... They

are really important for the way we feeling, more than we really think. How do you feel what you does is important? I create or change people’s houses, offices, stores, restaurants. I design more than spaces, I design ways to live and that is a really big deal. What inspires you? I am a very sensitive person so I can be inspired by everything—patterns, songs, conversations, other spaces, feelings, movies. I don’t pick my inspiration, it just blooms! What’s the best part of your job? The best part of my work is to help people to improve their lives. The moment I show my clients the reality of what they had in their mind but didn’t quite know it, that is an amazing feeling, I always see it in their faces.

IRENE WONG OWNER, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, DIRECTOR | IW PRODUCTIONS iwProductions.tv

If you’ve ever dreamed of traveling the world and sampling the best cuisine it has to offer, then Irene Wong is your official warrior woman crush. An award-winning producer and Emmy-nominated director, she is the owner, executive producer and director of IW Productions who produce Unique Eats, Man Fire Food, Unique Sweets, Summer’s Hot Cocktails and 5 Ingredient Fix. An eye for detail and a passion for production make her one of our favorite behind-the-scenes superstars. How did you become involved in television production? My introduction to television production was at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY. They taught a few classes in broadcasting but also provided production services for the school. We used to shoot and edit the school’s musical productions. After graduation, I branched out of Brooklyn and studied at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where I majored in film, television and radio production. I also did a double major in Broadcast Journalism. What do you love about what you do? The shows we do focus on food, cooking and travel. It’s an incredible way to see, hear, taste and experience the world. I love being able to tell a story. There is some researching, storyboarding and logistical planning that takes place during preproduction. But once I arrive to a location and get to know the people I’ll be featuring, I start to see more layers to the story. I also love collaborating with my talented production team—from the producers who find the best stories and characters, to the field crew who captures the most stunning images and sounds and the editors and story producers who go through hundreds of hours of footage and craft an entertaining, informative and beautiful show.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS may 2015 | @HHHEELS

How can specific shows we watch effect the way we feel? I hope my travel shows inspire people to book a plane ticket and visit another part of the world. I hope my cooking shows make people so hungry that they cancel whatever plans they had for the day, and head straight to their grocery store and cook a delicious dinner for friends and family. Food, cooking and travel should inspire people to be adventurous, conversational, nurturing and most of all, happy. How do you feel what you do is important? Everyone is busier than ever. We get up early and stay up late so that we can juggle a million different things. When someone tells me that they watched my show, visited a restaurant we featured or cooked a dish that everyone loved, then I feel I’ve helped slow them down and take some time to enjoy life. What inspires you? Travel is my biggest inspiration. Dining in a restaurant or in someone’s home introduces me to new ingredients and flavors. I lug a heavy stack of magazines for every flight to read about new destinations, to see the latest food styling trends, and be inspired by certain colors, fonts and layouts.

FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE: NONE. I LISTEN TO MY GUT. THREE CHARACTERISTICS OF A MODERN DAY WARRIOR WOMAN: DECISIVE YET THOUGHTFUL. HARD WORKING. AN ACCEPTANCE THAT YOU CAN’T HAVE IT ALL. MUST-READ BOOK: I’LL KNOW AS SOON AS I’M DONE READING THE 500 COOKBOOKS ON MY SHELVES. PROCRASTINATION BUSTER: UNFORTUNATELY, I’M THE QUEEN OF PROCRASTINATION. SO, IF THERE’S ANY ADVICE YOU CAN PASS ONTO ME, I’D APPRECIATE IT. IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE: HAVE MORE FUN.

MOVERS THE GROWING KNITWORK OF WOOL AND THE GANG.

How did you get started with Wool and the Gang? The concept of Wool and the Gang was born out of a passion for sustainable fashion. We met while studying textile design at Central Saint Martins in London. After school, we both worked at Alexander McQueen and Balmain in Paris. Our initial idea was to bring back knitting in a way that was fun, cool, easy and fast. We wanted to dust off the “old image” of knitting. During the past five years, we built a community of makers, and with a rising trend for transparent fashion, we’ve pushed our brand further by allowing our community of “Gang Makers” to make clothes for our customers through our online platform. Our vision is to reevaluate the traditional fashion business model; we want to connect people to the products they’re buying and to the people who make them. It’s all about transparency! Localized, transparent manufacturing can actually speed up the traditional fashion cycle, all made possible using technology. Our Gang is growing around the world, delivering fashion in a sustainable way.

Have you been surprised by its success? We are surprised every day that our dream and vision has come to what it is today. It’s hugely grounding seeing the Wool and the Gang team enjoying and supporting our mission. However, we sincerely believe the time is now for change in fashion; this is the drive to bring a new business model to the industry. For us, it’s important to connect with your clothes whether you’ve made them yourself or someone has made them for you. So, in that sense, finding people who have this same value and passion isn’t a surprise, it’s a movement, and we’re proud to be a part of it. Why do you think knitting and DIY crafts have become so popular? Learning a craft is the secret of happiness. We live in such a fast paced world, we think crafts have made a huge revival. As with food, there currently is a trend with going back-to-basics. Making your own clothes gives such a wonderful feeling of achievement, not to mention there is proven research that knitting is a form of meditation and can even help fight dementia. In last few years, the top five Google “how-to” searches were crochet, knitting and meditation. I think this is reflection of what people are craving in order to create balance in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. What do you love about working in Wool and the Gang? We love bringing back the connection between yourself and clothes, from creation to wearing. That goes to appreciating the materials your clothes are

made with, to the values of how your clothes are made, to ultimately feeling good in the clothes knowing they have been crafted in a sustainable way. We love good, timeless designs, therefore we love to design apparel and accessories that will withstand the test of time. A basic, good quality sweater will probably be worn with love and less likely end up in the fashion graveyard, a landfill. What’s the most difficult thing you’ve ever knitted? Socks are the most challenging little things to knit but equally rewarding. We love to knit bonkers things, from giant six-foot snowflakes to yarn bombing over shiny disco balls. What new developments do you have in the works? We have just started releasing our new spring and summer collection for 2015. People tend to think knits only are for winter, but we have the silkiest soft Pima Cotton, which is perfect for summer breezy evenings. We’re adding a new craft category to the mix, which includes knit pillows and we will also be introducing a crochet homeware collection in May. We also encourage our community to host knit parties in their home or a local bar or cafe where you get to bring your friends together and get your knit on. We have two gorgeous, exclusive pieces for the spring and summer knit parties—a necklace as well as a clutch. We always have a few tricks or knitting sticks up our sleeve so watch this space! — WoolandtheGang.com

WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

They started a knitting revolution. Jade Harwood and Aurelie Popper, former fashion school buddies, transformed the wonderful world of knitting thanks to their on-trend knit kits and drool-worth designs. Attracting beginners and experts alike, Wool and the Gang bring together a global network of knitting fanatics to create sustainable fashion made with love. We caught up with the dynamic duo—and their flock of merry knittings—at New York hotspot The Wooly.

trending WHY HAND CHAINS ARE THE NEW STATEMENT RINGS. Accessory designer Neely Phelan has long been on the forefront of style trends. Her eponymous jewelry brand blends antique and vintage elements to create one-of-a-kind pieces destined to become timeless staples. We caught up with the multi-tasking designer and Mom-of-three to talk about the latest in statement jewelry: hand chains. What are hand chains? Hand chains are a stylish way to adorn your fingers and wrist together. This accessory type has many flavors of style but has been around for centuries. What inspired you to add these to your collection of jewelry? While hand chains have been around for a long time, they are also a hot trend right now. Given the demand in the market, I wanted to serve my customers with a set of pieces that made their hands more intriguing. In addition, I wanted to design something unique that could serve as a conversation piece. What materials do you use? Vintage style plays a foundational role in all of my designs. I love to rework vintage and found objects such as dress clips, brooches, and rare unique pieces and mix them with natural earth stones. The history behind each vintage element I use make it unique and I love the thrill of finding extraordinary pieces that make a statement. Is there such a thing as a modern warrior woman? Of course! We are women who inspire and make a difference in each other. In addition, we have to take responsibility to be difference makers. I like this quote from Reese Witherspoon, “If you want to see change in the world, you have to be responsible for it.” I believe modern warrior women take chances and conquer their dreams. We empower each other to do it all and support each other throughout this journey. We are the gateway and balance between all of the crazy things that we tackle in a given day—from motherhood to operating a business.

What role do you think jewelry plays in our lives? Jewelry can play a personal and intimate role for women and men. It enables someone to express individuality and personality. Jewelry can also enrich someone’s self-confidence and strengthen his or her overall sense of style. My goal is to design pieces that will inspire and make a difference in someone’s life. My hope is that they will be worn and treasured for decades to come. — NeelyPhelan.com

WELL HEELED HOT SEAT Lime and Vine brings together two of our favorite things; style and comfort. The contemporary knitwear label pairs luxurious fabrics with flattering designs for the ultimate in casual chic. This month we put Brand Director, Young ChungStuart in our Well Heeled Hot Seat to talk style, comfort and those extra few inches. — LimeandVine.com Flats or Five Inches? If the flats aren’t my Chloe Susanna boots, sneakers (Chucks, Vans or Nikes), or flips-flops (Havianas), then I am a five incher all the way. Overdressed or Under-dressed? I would say underdressed, though being under-dressed is being “over”dressed sometimes. Does that make sense? In all honesty, if you are armed with confidence and just be yourself, you can never really be under-dressed now can you? After all, it’s the person that makes the clothes, not the other way around. Satins or Sequins? Gimme the sequins and in gold! Again, I am pretty laid back, but if I’m going to go glitzy, then let’s go big or go home! Also, I can have gaudy tendencies from time to time. Not to say that sequins are, but you know what I mean. Enormous Bag or Tiny Tote? Enormous bag. I am a mom and I need to make sure I’m armed with all necessities at all times! Though I never really did the small tote thing prebaby either. What’s Your Fashion Mantra to the Masses? Wear the clothes honey, don’t let them wear you. Be yourself, be free, be comfortable. Being comfortable in your own skin is the sexiest accessory to any outfit. If You Could be One Shoe What Would You Be? I would be the Chloe Susanna boot. It’s comfortable, goes with everything, is classic, but has the perfect amount of edge.

twinkle toes YOUR FEET MAY KNOW YOU’RE SICK BEFORE YOU DO. The human body is an amazing mosaic of systems that, on a good day, work in harmony to get us out the door. Of course, we’re not always calling the shots. Illness strikes at the worst time. Reflexologists have long believed that the foot is intrinsically connected to other parts of the body. In that vein of thinking, Dr. Levine—a top NYC podiatrist—offers several tips on how your feet can clue you into the health of your whole body! Institutebeaute.com GOT CRAMPED FEET? If you often experience cramping in your feet, you might be suffering from dehydration. Dr. Levine recommends 1-½ liters of water everyday—that’s a doable six cups. A boost of potassium is also great for preventing cramps so don’t hesitate to grab a banana—potassium plays a key role in the chemical process that drives muscle contractions. GOT COLD FEET? Your feet should run between 75°F and 90°F, anything below that indicates circulatory problems. This symptom could be linked to a myriad of problems including stress, smoking, or high cholesterol. One cigarette can reduce blood flow to the extremities as much as fifty percent for up to an hour. Exercise and healthy eating habits reliably improve circulation. GOT A BURNING SENSATION? A burning sensation in the ball of your foot can be indicative of nerve damage, otherwise called neuropathy. With this condition, the nerves in your legs and feet erroneously communicate pain and discomfort to your brain, even when there is none. The main causes are diabetes and alcoholism. In many cases, a doctor will prescribe vitamin B12 to help cope with neuropathy related issues. GOT RED, SWOLLEN FEET? Little known fact, while they don’t sniffle or sneeze, your feet can be affected by allergies too. Outbreaks on your feet can be caused by foods like eggs, milk, or soy. Most other cases involve direct contact with an offending substance—such as the dye used in your socks. Also pay attention to the lotions you use. Parabens—preservatives used in cosmetics—can irritate your skin, so look for “paraben-free” products. GOT DRY, CRACKED HEELS? Each cell of your epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) is more than seventy percent water. Constant pressure, or non-supportive shoes, can lead to patches of thick, dehydrated skin. But your cracked heels could also be a symptom of weight gain and/or hormonal changes during menopause that dry out the foot. Avoid hot baths or showers to guard the natural oils in your feet’s skin and regularly moisturize.

the braid-y bunch OUR RESIDENT HAIR EXPERT TALKS RUNWAY BRAIDS. Images: Rui Vasco/ModaLisboa

Known for his metallic marvels, Valentim Quaresma wowed the fashion crowd at ModaLisboa with yet another stunning Spring/Summer collection. Aside from the jaw-dropping jewelry creations, the styling proved once and for all, that braids are back. We asked our resident hair expert Selda Cortes to give us the low down on this season’s most coveted up-do. What kind of hair do you need to execute the perfect braid? They are many different type of braids for different length hair. Often though, medium to long hair is the easiest to work with. When the hair is dirty, some type of braids are easier to do as the hair doesn’t slip from your fingers. What’s the advantages of braiding? Braids always look good, and if you’re in a rush it can be your style goto. It only takes a few minutes and looks fabulous. Can you learn how to braid or do you feel like it’s something that’s passed down? Some braids are easier than others. For example, one of my favorite braids is a fishtail braid and I think it’s very easy to learn. Anybody can do it.

We always wore braids for school, how has the braid come-of-age? A young girl might be encouraged to wear braids to school for the simple purpose of keeping long hair out of her face and eyes. Additionally, encouraging a girl to braid her own hair has value as an exercise in selfdiscipline and attention to careful grooming. An adult braid can be looser and more playful, referencing youth while creating a tension between formality and fun. What are three tools you need for the perfect braid? A brush, a rubber band, and a texturizinging product. I recommend called Piece Works from Eufora. Who rocks a braid better than anyone else? I love Jennifer Lawrence’s halo braid! She knows how to rock the hairstyle while looking sexy and playful at the same time.

IN-SPA-RATIONAL THE ENCHANTING LIFE OF ILSE JACOBSEN. When we grow up, we want to be Ilse Jacobsen. The Danish designer has built an empire that includes a collection of resort wear, ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear. She has three flower shops (Blomsten by Ilse Jacobsen), her own spa (Kurbadet by Ilse Jacobsen) and an award-winning line of beauty

products (Ilse by Ilse Jacobsen). Better yet, she does it all from the idyllic seaside village and summer resort where she was born and raised Hornbæk, Denmark. “I start my day very early in the morning,” says Jacobsen. “Each day I head of to the spa to get the physical benefits of the spa facilities, read my

paper and drink my cup of tea in silence. This way I start every day doing something good for myself and gather my energy for the projects ahead.” Jacobsen suffers from a form of rheumatism. For her, the spa is not only a luxurious place to forget about the pressures of everyday life, but it is a place of healing. Located in the heart of Hornbæk, Kurbadet by Ilse Jacobsen, focuses on a holistic approach to health and well being. It includes a spa area with a steam room, sauna and an indoor, heated therapy pool. In also has a large outdoor area with a heated pool which allows visitors to swim year-round. The spa offers a variety of treatments performed by a seasoned beauty and healthcare team. Services include everything from personal training, to massage and beauty treatments. And then of course, there is the restaurant, a must-visit entity in itself. Serving up new Nordic-style food based on seasonal ingredients, this popular Hornbæk hot spot offers unrivaled seaside views and an air of refined elegance and tranquility. “One of my absolute favorite things to do is cook,” explains Jacobsen. “I relax when I am preparing a meal for the people I love and I can spend all day in the kitchen. When I cook, my mind is all about the meal and I forget everything about my business. Because

food is such an important interest of mine, I of course have a fantastic restaurant in my spa as well. In the restaurant you can enjoy healthy and tasty dishes made from quality ingredients.” Jacobsen may seem to live a charmed life but it has been twenty years in the making juggling projects, deadlines and professional commitments. “My many different products and various brands demand dedication and focus, as well as very hard work and skilled employees,” says Jacobsen. “I am used to balancing the demands of my business and working hard, as this has been part of my core business, for as long as I can remember.” For someone who seems to done it all, what could possible be next? “We are very focused on our current markets and existing brands to ensure growth and stability and this [Kurbadet by Ilse Jacobsen spa] is our main focus for now,” says Jacobson. “However, I keep on getting new ideas and we are always working on new projects within the company—it keeps us and the customers excited—so who knows, what will happen in the future...” We look forward to the next installment of the world of Ilse Jacobsen. Until then, we will settle back, relax and enjoy a slice of serenity, a world away, with our own Ilse by Ilse Jacobsen products. IlseJacobsen.com— ANGELA GILLTRAP
