EDITOR’S LETTER

W

hen you work in magazines, you constantly feel as if you’re living life six months ahead. Your mind is in autumn when people are thinking spring; by the time the holiday season approaches you’ve been living festive puns for longer than you’d care to admit. The upside of this constant time travel is that you get to relive precious moments—and projects— come publishing time. Our spring cover, for example, was shot on November 11, 2014 which happens to be my birthday. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day surrounded by my incredibly talented friends and co-workers, working to create, what I hoped, would be one of our most impressive covers to date. They say a picture says a thousand words. Hopefully this shoot, and

indeed the many wonderful editorials that grace our pages, conveys in some small way the creativity, passion and dedication of our amazing team who worked tirelessly to go above and beyond. For me, images are snapshots of time; little reminders of precious moments captured for posterity. As we head into spring and start to defrost both inside and out, I encourage you all to reignite whatever passion it is that drives you. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Lost time cannot be found.” Spend it wisely. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. To all of our talented contributors, loyal followers and those near and dear who put up with me during deadline, I thank you. Until next time, may your heels always be as high as your standards,

Angela Gilltrap

INSUZANNE HER SHOES RAE DELIVERS TIMELESS STYLE.

B

rooklyn-based designer Suzanne Rae creates with her wearer in mind. “I think fashion is a very accessible and influential form of art,” she says. “It helps shape our every day and I want my collections—each piece actually—to help initiate, promote, or provide a positive, progressive experience for the wearer.” Featuring minimalist designs with a focus on sustainability, Rae’s 2015 Spring/ Summer collection is inspired by the beauty and sophistication of the Egyptian pyramids. “These perfect structures, created with an unfathomable and possibly lost technology, bear the sort of enigmatic elegance that blurs the past and the future,” explains Rae. “Their magnificence is timeless; both ancient and high-tech at once. It has even been proposed that instead of tombs, the Pyramids were structures built to harness free energy, much like the work proposed by Nicola Tesla. With so much yet to be discovered, the pyramids continue to capture our attention as well as our respect, much like today’s modern gentlewoman.”

A simple palette of light colors makes for a wearable spring collection of mix and match separates. Classic lines and casual silhouettes have become Rae’s calling card. This is elegant, everyday wear created with longevity in mind; designs in-tune with seasonal trends yet, not governed by them—a design trait she attributes to her home base in Brooklyn, New York. “I always say that I love Brooklyn because it is the only place in the world that truly encourages individuality, in all respects of taste,” says Rae. “I think that is amazing. It definitely fuels my imagination, and I’m able to think more honestly—more free from feeling the need to follow trends.” As consumers move away from “fast fashion,” timeless pieces from designers such as Suzanne Rae pave the way for a more sustainable fashion industry where the aim is for selfexpression, empowering us all to be ourselves regardless of what fashion dictates. CURIOUSER & CURIOUSER SAFA Şahin STRIKES AGAIN.

W

hen it comes to show stopping spring heels you can’t go past Safa Şahin’s latest collection. The Turkish designer—known for his dream-like creations—has once again delivered a collection that elevates footwear design to the next level. This surreal, spring collection was inspired by the work of Japanese artist and writer, Yayoi Kusama. Utilizing materials such as liquid polyester, silicon and plexiglass, Şahin has transformed the humble heel into fanciful, oneof-a-kind creations with colorful motifs, playful embellishments and gravity defying angles—a far cry from his previous black collection. “My collection usually depends on my mood,” says Şahin from his studio in Turkey. “I was very depressed when I prepared the black collection. I was like Alice [in Wonderland] in preparing this collection.”

Twisted heels and angular shapes, colorful uppers and intriguing lines make these shoes centerpieces rather than everyday wear. They are an artistic expression of Şahin’s inner most design inspirations. Since launching his eponymous line of footwear in 2008, Şahin has balanced his creative needs with practical obligations to deliver both wearable and abstract shoes. A footwear designer, painter and photographer, this is a designer whose inspiration knows no bounds. “For me, it’s never difficult to create new concepts and designs,” says Şahin. “I love my job.” Already at work on his next surrealist collection, Safa Şahin’s proves that the sky is the limit when it comes to inspired design. THE INTRIGUING WORLD OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT WITH FOOTWEAR DESIGNER DIANA CAMILLERI.

F

ootwear is one of the most challenging fields of product design. Our feet contain over onequarter of the bones in the human body; 33 joints and more than 100 muscles. A footwear designer is set with the daunting task of creating a workable, breathable, fashionable item in which to encase this complicated area of the human anatomy. For multitalented footwear designer and product developer Diana Camilleri, however, it’s all in a day’s work. “My passion for footwear started when I was a young girl; I used to love wearing my mother’s heels and playing dress up with my sister,” says Camilleri. The up-and-coming footwear designer combined her love of drawing and craft with her passion for footwear and enrolled in an evening course in Footwear Design while living in Milan. Later graduating from the London College of Fashion with a BA (Hons) Cordwainers Footwear in Product Design and Development. “I was stunned when I discovered the amount of components that are required to make a simple pair of shoes. Especially when they are handmade,” says Camilleri. Developing a cohesive range of fabulous footwear is

Camilleri’s favorite part of the shoe design process. Beyond choosing fabrics, looks, and color inspiration is the need to resolve fitting issues and refine techniques through a process of trial and error. It’s an exercise that is not for the faint of heart. “Nothing every goes smoothly,” says Camilleri. “As a typical example, you can design a shoe on paper and it won’t be until you create a mock-up when you come to realize that the design may not work. Working from 2D to 3D becomes problematic, and changes are almost always necessary.” But it’s this challenge that spurs Camilleri onwards. Inspired by nature, Camilleri’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection caught our eye. Aptly entitled, Nature Prevails, it features a combination of traditional dyeing techniques that utilize flowers, red cabbage, logwood and other natural ingredients to create a unique range of print and color variations. These are fresh, feminine designs with an emphasis on sustainability. Although this collection is not for sale commercially, be sure that someday, in the not-too-distant future, you may be wearing the result of Camilleri’s hard work. A step in the right direction. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

SOLE SISTERS

HARNESSING THE POWER OF THREE AT LUXURY ITALIAN BRAND, AGL.

I

t’s a family affair at accessories brand AGL—Attilio Giusti Leombruni. Launched in 1958 in Montegranaro—a small town in the Marche Region of Italy—patriarch Piero Giusti created a company with quality and comfort shoes in mind. His son, Attilio Giusti then took over the reigns, keeping the family legacy alive. Today, it’s his three daughters who preside over the brand, each bringing their own charm, expertise and style to create an enduring tradition that proves that blood is thicker than water. “Our entire family works in the business

with the management currently being in the hands of us three sisters, each with a different role,” says Vera Giusti. “Specifically, I am in charge of communications and brand image, my sister Sara specializes in sales and customer service, while our sister Marianna is the creative one, who designs all of the collections. My father Attilio Giusti and my mother Chiara Leombruni still work in the business, giving us the benefit of their experience. It’s definitely a family affair!” Far from being “forced” into the family business, the sibling trio developed their own

professional strengths outside of the company before choosing to work together. This, says Sara, is the reason they don’t feel the need to compete with each other to have their creative voices heard. “Each one of us has a huge trust and respect for the others’ opinions, abilities and personalities,” says Marianna. “We have different tastes,” adds Vera. “We don’t always agree on everything. We have developed a simple rule that helps us in making decisions. If two siblings both agree on something, that is a “go.” Luckily, we are three, so this rule is easy to apply.” Having daily access to their own factory, AGL can monitor the manufacturing process much more closely than other brands. “The production area of our factory is next door to our offices,” says Sara. “This proximity brings us more than one benefit: First of all our work is based on experiments. We are able to test the products and make changes and receive feedback from the production team and work with them to make improvements, right when a sample is created.” With comfort an important factor, this constant tweaking of designs is one of the great differentiation points of the brand. “If you are a real shoemaker, not only a shoe designer, comfort is really important,” says designer Marianna. “It’s our way to be honest to our clients and work in a professional way. Dedicated to creating luxury, Italian-made comfort shoes, AGL has the U.S. market in their sights for 2015. “What makes our footwear special, is that my sisters and I design and produce shoes thinking about our own lives,” says Sara. “We wear them every day. We combine our need for design and style with the comfort that AGL is known for, which comes from the craftsmanship techniques that our grandfather taught us. This is what we want to wear on our feet every day.” With celebrities Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts and Dakota Fanning already embracing the brand it won’t be long until we all add a little sisterly love to our shoe collection. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

BRIGHT YOUNG THING THE RAW STYLINGS OF LIRON KILGER.

B

orn in Israel, London-based jewelry designer Liron Kilger is not afraid of extremes. Her designs are far from understated preferring to create colorful, extravagant pieces that have caught the eye of fashion lovers the world over. On any given day, Kilger receives countless requests from stylists, photographers and creatives who have discovered her work Online or in magazines. For Kilger, it’s a motivating factor in the long and arduous journey from designer to business owner. “From the start, I’ve had an amazing amount of interest from press in some of the biggest fashion magazines worldwide which I’m grateful for,” says Kilger. “It motivates me to keep designing.” Kilger’s designs are inspired by years of

living and traveling the world. Whether it’s a big city, a little town, beach or market, she is moved by the architecture, culture and history of her surroundings. She then combines this inspiration with a hands-on approach preferring to work with resin acrylics and metal, even creating a collection of jewelry for the catwalk made exclusively from recycled materials. “I love using raw materials and turning them into something that is mine,” says Kilger. “I feel that I can express my desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used.” In the process of creating a new collection, expect to see more eye-catching designs from this upand-coming jewelry designer. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. In the quest for the simple life, we turn to technology. Multi-tasking apps, wireless networks, and constant connectivity has been both a blessing and a curse as we aim to strike a balance in our lives. The steady growth of wearable tech products has proved that we can combine fashion with function to help us keep on top of our evergrowing to-do list in style. This season, Swarovski has joined forces with California-based technology company Misfit to launch Swarovski Shine, a new line of wearable tech products with the glamor and sparkle you’ve come to love from Swarovski and the technical prowess of well-known tech firm Misfit. “Observing the high tech market, we felt the opportunity to inject an aesthetic added-value that would turn useful products into on-trend accessories. Working with Misfit was a fantastic experience which ensured us the uncompromised quality we as a brand are committed to,” said Joan Ng, Senior Vice President APAC product marketing, responsible for the project. At the center of the collection is a faceted crystal stone embedded with expert tracking technology from Misfit. It measures steps; calories burned; distance and even sleep quality and synchronizes wirelessly with an app on the wearer’s smartphone. With a simple tap, the Swarovski Shine activity tracker lights up to indicate not only the time but also the status of activity accomplished for the day. “With the Swarovski Shine collection, we were able to bring our strong jewelry styling point of view, developing versatile pieces which can work with this very practical device to really address modern and multifaceted women,” said Creative Director Nathalie Colin. With pendants, wristbands and bracelets on offer, there is something for everyone looking to add a great piece of jewelry with a purpose. Available in select Swarovski boutiques in China, Hong-Kong, and the USA in late March.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN

WE TALK FLOWER HALOS & MEOW CROWNS WITH MICHELLE MADONNA, THE BRAINS AND BEAUTY BEHIND FLOWER CHILDREN ONLY. What inspired you to create Flower Children Only? The idea behind Flower Children Only came to me in a dream one night. I dreamt that I had created silk flower headbands of fun, beautiful colors. When I woke the next day, I immediately told my mom about my amazing dream. It was my mom who convinced me to turn my dream into a reality. What had started as something that we did just for fun suddenly blew up and has blossomed into Flower Children Only. Are you surprised by how popular it has become? I was incredibly surprised! When Flower Children Only began, it was purely for fun. I was making flower halos only for my friends or myself. Before I knew it, I was filling out the paperwork to form a corporation and hiring employees. What does an average day look like for you? A typical day at TMG Headquarters starts at 8 am. My employees begin the day by preparing the one-of-a-kind silk flowers that are then used to create our handmade floral halo headbands. Our interns then clean and check the halo for any imperfections before filling the orders. I am usually kept busy throughout the day by returning emails, organizing the boutique orders, or making any specially placed orders. However, my favorite days are those when I have the time to spend the day designing new halos. If we love a new design, it is photographed, and the flowers are ordered as soon as possible.

If you had to describe Flower Children Only in three words, what would they be? Wild and Free Spirited. What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve come across since launching Flower Children Only? The biggest obstacle that I have come across has been the quick growth of the company. I wasn’t sure how to handle it. I was making every single order out of my apartment without any help before hundreds of orders began to come in. At first, I was worried that I would have to shut it down because I couldn’t keep up with the amount of orders. Luckily, with the help of my parents I was able to move the company into a larger space so that we were able to keep up with the demand. What has been the most rewarding? Making my Flower Children happy and seeing how beautiful each of them looks in their flower halo are the most rewarding things. I love hearing from them on social media about how much they love the product. What’s coming up for Spring/ Summer 2015? We have been working on a clothing line and hopefully will debut a few of the pieces soon so that I am able to know what my Flower Children think. FlowerChildrenOnly.com

SEASONAL SWITCH Your home is precious to you but so is your shoe collection. Free up space for your shoe fetish with a “store & deliver” service like BoxButler.com, MakeSpace.com & GardeRobeOnline.com. Photograph and inventory the shoes. Then box them up. Call for a pickup and voila! More space for more shoes. This kind of service is super for off-season shoes, once-a-year boots and out of fashion but must-keep designs.

electrically powered storage-base bed from FLOU. There are a few “lift & store” style beds on the market. Auto-lifting shocks may be what your bedroom was missing. Who knew? Gorgeous Italian design doesn’t have to stop at shoes. Those Italian lovers even make sure that once you own the shoes, they also have a place to live inside a lifting storage bed. Adore your bed just the way it is? No problem. Stash a few dust-proof 16 shoe organizers below, and you’re done.

THE GOOD OL’ SHOE BOX Well, more like, the new & improved standard shoe box. Container Store finally created a “Tall Shoe Box.” Perfect for today’s seven-inch heel. Keep your flats and sneakers from piling up in the corner or from mingling with your swankier shoes by sliding them into slots in an over the door organizer. Maximize dead wall space at the back of your walk-in closet and roll in a ten tier shoe rack flush against the wall. With it’s uneven bar construction it works best with high-heeled shoes or roll it in perpendicular to the wall and flush with your hanging clothes for more space saving. Do shelves stacked with plastic and cardboard shoe boxes have your inner-decorator feeling down? A shoe box with room for a view might just do the trick.

3

UNDER BED STORAGE As a general rule, I’m not usually keen on using under bed space. But some rules were made to be broken, and when it comes to shoe addictions, that underutilized area can be the perfect enabler. For fast & effortless access, you may need to improve your sleeping arrangements and splurge for an

BETTY BOOT For boots with 6” heels or over-the-knee length, laying them flat on shelves usually proves fool-proof. Max out low empty spaces for very active boot storage with this boot rack. Or go high by stacking up seven or eight mesh shoe shelves. Pop in a boot stand wherever you can squeeze out a few inches of floor space. And if you’re swimming in extra hangingrod space, it’s time to get yourself a butler—a boot butler. For boots that are rarely worn, go for boot-boxes stacked inside your new auto-shock bed or on a high shelf.

5

SHOW US YOUR BEST SIDE By now your shoe storage solutions should be taking form. Every underutilized nook and cranny is filled with the appropriate shoe and paired with its storage solution. But after a wild week of wining and dining, kicking off your shoes before sliding into bed, you can’t remember which shoe goes where. Why bother filling your head with that stuff anyway? Snap a picture. Print, peel & stick. It’s just that easy.

6

OBJETS D’ART Charge up your Kindle, donate your book collection—at least the paperbacks—

and use that liberated shelf space for displaying your most gorgeous shoes as objets d’art. Hiding some shoes away in a box is appropriate but others deserve to be seen. The options for putting your best shoe forward are limitless. Plexi-cube cases (think signed basketball collection here) work magic for showing off a shoe’s beauty. You can look, but you can’t touch. Mix up your new shoe gallery with some shoe stands or even a cake stand (with or without domed top). Even oversized hardcover design and art books can do double-duty as a shoe stand when stacked horizontally.

7

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT I’d imagine your iPhone is within arm’s reach. Search the phrase “shoe collectors” in the app store and the first one that pops up by Runner Apps is the way to manage and organize your shoes in the 21st century. If the photos featuring men’s sneakers deter you, then search, “myShoes” (all one word). Whether you’re a shoe fledgling or a seasoned shoe aficionado, the key to shoe sanity is creating storage that reflects you and your habits. Ditch & donate your boot inserts if, despite your best intentions, you never use them. Ditch & donate those heels you twisted your ankle in and are now too afraid to wear. Ditch & donate those boots from seven years ago that are two sizes too small. Create systems that you have the best chance of maintaining and using and not systems that are too complicated. Put a bit of time and effort into the project. It will be worth it. Slow and steady wins the new shoes.

There are plenty of amazing boots and flats on the market today, it’s all about finding a brand and style that works for you.” — Abigail, Makeup Artist “It really depends on the occasion. I always feel like I can achieve more in them. The key is finding good quality heels that can keep up with your lifestyle.” — Madison, Finance

SHAKERS

BEHIND-THE-SCENES with FASHION PRODUCER CHRISTINA NEAULT. From New York to Paris, London to Milan the catwalks are heating up with the season’s hottest looks, but what really goes on behind-the-scenes? We talk to fashion producer and consultant Christina Neault, one of Fashion Week’s movers and shakers. How did you get started in fashion? I always knew I wanted to be in fashion. I have been sewing and looking at fashion magazines since I was young. I went to FIT and kind of fell into show production. I would have never know that producing fashion shows could have been an actual career. What do you love most about it? The people! What are your primary responsibilities? I produce events, fashion shows, dinners, parties, etc. I also consult with designers and brands on partnerships, collaborations and branding. What are the key ingredients to producing a memorable runway show? Being organized, staying in budget, teamwork and most of all—a beautiful collection. What’s the biggest mistake a designer can make when it comes

to putting on a runway show? Not being ready to show. Doing a runway show is a huge undertaking financially and needs to be a long-term commitment. The press and buyers want to see consistency. How stressful is it, to work so intensely during fashion week? Work is always intense. Fashion week is just multiplied by 1000. What advice would you give to those who want to work behind-thescenes of fashion week? Be observant. Watch everything that goes on around you. You are only one piece of a very big puzzle. When it comes to the next-big-thing, which radars are on your onesto-watch list for 2015? There is a lot of fresh new talent out there but what I am really excited to see in 2015 is Chris Benz at Bill Blass and Peter Copping at Oscar de la Renta.

ELLARY’S GREENS

WHERE NUTRITIOUS MEETS DELICIOUS.

L

ocated in Manhattan’s West Village, Ellary’s Greens is part cafe, part restaurant or as some local residents like to call it; a welcome home away from home. Opened in 2013, it’s charming, cozy and nonpretentious, the kind of place where you can happily sit at the bar to dine alone or nestle down for a candlelit dinner for two. Either way, once you’ve eaten at Ellary’s Greens, you’ll realize it’s a step in the right direction. Opened in 2013, Ellary’s Greens is committed to serving local, natural and organic food sourced by the owner herself, New Orleans native, Leith Hill. What makes this establishment different from the many other Paleo, GlutenFree, Organic eateries popping up in and around Manhattan, is the fact that taste is not compromised for the sake of nutrition. At Ellary’s Greens, it’s about quality, seasonal ingredients; dishes created for discerning diners who crave clean, delicious food. Best of all, even those without dietary restrictions can enjoy the menu. As we continue to be bombarded with food horror stories, Ellary’s Greens is one of those places where all you have to do is eat—the research has been done for you. There is no microwave on the premises; each ingredient is “Sourced by Leith” herself. Even the menus are made from recycled produce boxes because this is an establishment that practices what it preaches, and it shows. Ellary’s Greens is proof that food doesn’t have to be complicated to be delicious. — 33 Carmine St, New York, NY 10014, EllarysGreens.com ANGELA GILLTRAP

clever contouring BEAUTY TV EXPERT GISELLE UGARTE TALKS SEXY SILHOUETTES. Contouring has been credited for flawless looking selfies and red carpet perfection, but what exactly is it? We ask Beauty TV expert Giselle Ugarte to satisfy our contouring curiosity. What is contouring? Contouring is how people use makeup to contort features on their faces and/or bodies. It’s like plastic surgery, without having to go under the knife! Can anyone learn how to contour? Absolutely! Practice! Practice! Practice! What tools do you need to do a great job? The two most important factors are coloring and blending. You need to find the best product for your skin type. I prefer a full-coverage liquid or a soft solid, because I love the made-up look; I’ll finish with matte powder for an exaggerated effect. You also need to find the right colors for your skin tone. For my olive skin tone, I use chocolate brown tones for contour and yellow tones two to three shades lighter than my skin for highlight. Don’t assume the kits marketed for contouring are right for you. Take the time to find the right shades, which may even be foundations (rather than formal bronzer or highlighter). For blending, I highly recommend using a flat-top kabuki brush, a suggestion made to me by drag queens, who I believe to be the ultimate masters of contouring. I actually use my flat-top brush for both application, using the precise, round edges, and for blending, alternating between long, smooth strokes and small, circular motions. What areas can you contour? Pretty much anything — cheeks, nose, jawline, cleavage, abs, legs, the list goes on! What are some beginner mistakes? An easy mistake is picking out the wrong colors. There have been times I’ve left the house looking orange or dirty. Blending is a pretty tricky balancing act, too, especially when it comes to body contouring. Shaping my nose is a daily struggle. Also, you want to make sure to clean your hairline with a damp towel afterwards, to avoid a dandruff, halo effect. Which celebrities use contouring? Every celebrity on a red carpet has contouring done, from Jennifer Lopez to Julianne Moore. Men do it, too. What’s your advice for those wanting to give contouring a try at home? Don’t go straight into a full-faced contouring routine. Start slowly, and master each area.

ugarte’s CONTOURING 101 Start by adding a little bronzer to your cheeks, chin and forehead for a boost of color, then gradually start to add structure to the placement. Put some extra concealer or start incorporating a highlighting foundation under your eyes and under your cheeks. Add some highlighting shimmer to the apples of your cheeks and down the center of your nose. And so on. Where I apply contour: Around my hairline, around my eyelids, both sides of my nose, beneath my cheekbones, along my jawline and just under my chin. Where I apply highlight: between my brows and down the center of my nose, beneath my brow bone, underneath my eyes and above my cheek bones, between the apples of my cheeks and my jawline and around my lips. For a little extra dimension and a finishing touch, I use a shimmery, highlighting foundation down my nose and on my cheeks. I usually sprinkle this along my décolletage. The shimmer is what creates that red carpet “glow.”

find your fragrance in the stars Trying to find the perfect perfume for you? With thousands of fragrances on the market today, it’s like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. So we turned to the stars for heavenly advice on finding your ideal fragrance; the only thing you need to know is your astrological sign. Whether you seek love, wealth, or fame, our top picks will help you shine like the brightest stars above. “Fragrance speaks to our emotions,” says astrologer Susan Miller, author of The Year Ahead and Planets and Possibilities. She offers suggestions to women and men for astrologically appropriate fragrances, noting that every sign has its own scent personality. For example, Leos are expressive and enjoy the best that life has to offer. Leo woman will adore rich, look-at-me fragrances. Pisces women enjoy the classics, and are attracted to traditional scents, especially the tried-and-true vintage perfumes. Whether you’re a luxury-loving Taurus or a sporty Sagittarius, there’s a fragrance for you destined in the stars. — JAN MORAN ARIES As a spring fire sign, the Aries woman derives excitement from diamonds and all shades of red. Aries will adore rich rose fragrances, especially those with a warm woods finish such as sandalwood or cedarwood. Tulips and amaryllis also rank high with this classy woman. TAURUS “Venus-ruled Taurus women simply never have enough perfumes,” Miller says. This earth sign loves opulence and beauty and is drawn to soft floral Oriental scents, especially those with violet, jasmine, and lavender.

florals. “The Libra woman,” Miller explains, “uses perfumes and body lotions as part of her allure – she can never have too many.” She adores orchids, narcissus and freesia; she likes a dash of sage in her food, and musk in her fragrance. SCORPIO “Scorpio women adore shades of red and spicy floral scents,” Miller says. “Her signature perfume is musk or a haunting floral Oriental.” Think hibiscus, spiced rose, amaryllis, and ginger for this autumn child.

GEMINI A child of spring, the Gemini woman adores cheerful flowers and sunny fruits. Miller adds, “Lily-of-the-valley is one of Gemini’s favorite flowers.” Yellow is one of her favorite colors, so daffodils and daisies rank high, too.

SAGITTARIUS The Sagittarian woman is active, involved, and sporty, and wants fragrances that will keep pace with her energetic lifestyle. She loves shades of deep purple and blue, and is partial to violet, rosemary, and carnation.

CANCER The water sign of Cancer loves armfuls of pearls and light summery florals. “Send her white roses, acanthus, or gardenias, or plant bulbs of whites or narcissus for her garden,” Miller says.

CAPRICORN This winter child of the earth loves rich, complex aromas. “For fragrance, she prefers classic scents from France,” Miller says. Imagine holly berries, African violets, rich jasmine, and luscious roses.

LEO Often larger than life, the fiery summer sign of Leo loves life’s center stage. Dozens of red roses, ruby jewels, blood oranges, and smoky incense enchant those born under this expressive sign.

AQUARIUS The Aquarius woman always knows the latest styles and modern gadgets, but she has a vintage side, too. Eclectic in her tastes, she enjoys an exotic mix of hydrangea, bird of paradise, and Russian leather.

VIRGO The Virgo woman craves order and embraces the classics. Fresh and summery is her style. She finds lemon, rosemary, lily, and lavender fragrances inviting and invigorating.

PISCES The visionary Pisces loves angels, water, and winter whites. She adores classic floral bouquets but likes a dash of patchouli or incense to warm white floral bouquets of jasmine, lily, and narcissus.

LIBRA The autumn sign of Libra loves airy

TALKING SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY WITH TEADORA’S FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR VALERIA COLE. How did you get started in the beauty industry? I spent close to twenty years launching categorychanging lifestyle products in the consumer tech industry. Being a Brazilian native, I also grew up using and loving rainforest ingredients in cosmetics. I would bring them back to the U.S. from my many business trips, and all my friends would fall in love with them too and ask for more. Through the years, I had hoped someone would introduce a comprehensive Amazon rainforest focused line into the U.S. market, but no one did. All the attempts seemed to be focused on a single ingredient and did not seem to focus on bringing out the lusciousness of the rainforest and do it justice, so when I decided to leave tech I saw that as an opportunity. It brings me tremendous joy to share this amazing treasure with the rest of the world while making sure that we were also doing our part in helping to preserve it. What do you love most about your work with Teadora? I love Brazil, and I love the U.S. I always had this huge desire of doing something that was a great exchange between these two markets. One that allowed me to share the beauty and bounty of my homeland while also allowing me to benefit both with some product or service consumers fall in love with. What ingredients does Teadora use that are different to other brands? Well, I guess the question is more around how we are using these ingredients differently vs. what ingredients are different. So we picked my seven favorite Brazilian rainforest ingredients, which we affectionately call: The Icons of the Rainforest. Then, instead of simply slapping Açaí into a product for the sake of its antioxidant properties and leaving it at that, we took these seven ingredients and put them together in a set of powerful elixirs that combine all their great properties. These superfruits are absolutely packed with different vitamins, oleic and fatty acids, antioxidants and other medicinal properties that peoples of the Amazon have used forever, and we combine those into an elixir that is used in certain products of the line. These are the proprietary and trademarked elixirs we call: RainforestYouth, RainforestHydration, and RainforestRetoration elixirs.

Why are these ingredients important? The Icons of the Rainforest (we literally created icons and pronunciation keys for them so that people can recognize the friendly icons and know how to pronounce their names) because of their amazing properties as I explained earlier. Some of them are more familiar to folks in the U.S. and some are not: Açaí, for instance, is a really popular one already, particularly for the food industry and also some cosmetics companies have used it for both body and hair. Others such as Cupuaçu, Buriti, Andiroba, and Pitanga are less familiar. I love Cupuaçu for example, it is such a powerful, cool, ingredient. It is from the chocolate family, a cousin of the cocoa. It has more antioxidants than Açaí, and it’s easier to harvest because of its sheer size; it makes one of the most moisturizing butters in the world. Buriti is another ingredient I absolutely adore, aside from it being a beautiful fruit, and for also being rich in antioxidants, it is also rich in vitamins C and E and has one of the highest concentrations of vitamin A among fruits and vegetables. Because of its pure beauty, we also used it as our muse for the development of the Teadora logo. I could go on and on, but aside from their amazing properties, there is another reason why these ingredients are important, and that has to do with rainforest conservation: by working and teaching these local Amazon basis communities to sustainably pick and process these ingredients, we are actually providing them with a booming viable economy based on forest that is worth more standing than cut for lumber or cattle. I grew up with a mother who not only believed in naturopathic ways, but was always an Amazon rainforest lover. She constantly reminded me that the Amazon were the lungs of the world, and our job as Brazilians and holders of the treasure was to protect it, and my desire is to do everything I can to help that cause. We created a program we trademarked Earth4you. You4earth. So proceeds from our sales are put into that program to fund a philanthropic exchange between U.S. and Brazil where we bring underprivileged teens from the U.S. to do social work in the communities where these products are sourced from. —TeadoraBeauty.com
