ears ago, my Mom sent me a coloring-in book. I was twenty-seven. A little perplexed, I asked her why. “It’s good for stress,” she explained. Not one to doubt her wise counsel — particularly when it entailed me doing nothing but coloring-in —I gave it a try. It turns out that doing something as trivial as coloring-in has a remarkable effect on the brain. Today, there is a whole section dedicated to adult coloringin books — from the creative to the crude. Why? Because we are sending ourselves into an early grave worrying about inconsequential things that don’t matter. We have stopped making time to simply be, filling up our free time instead with endless status updates and overwhelming to-do lists. I mean, when is the last time you laughed out loud? Danced for no good reason? Let your mind wander freely? “Free, imaginative play is crucial for normal social, emotional and cognitive development,” says Melinda Wenner in Scientific America magazine. “It makes us better adjusted, smarter and less stressed.” So in this, our Play issue, we explore what it’s like to run wild in today’s world — from

indulging our inner child with the latest Star Wars inspired collection from Irregular Choice, to taking the leap and changing careers like dancer-turned-photographer Kane Bonke. “Play” means something different for each one of us and can lead to things one would never expect. For handbag designer Dominika Swaicka, it was the act of creating collages from holiday snaps that led to the launch of her eponymous line of amazing bags. For ready-to-wear designer Kristi Vosbeck, it was playing in her family’s clothing store that inspired her to create her own label in New York City. Whatever it is that makes you happy, I say indulge it. Carve out time to do something than is simply fun to do. When you look back on your life, it’s not the amount of Instagram followers you have, the number of cat videos you’ve watched or the mint condition of your very expensive designer sofa that matters. It’s that moment you laughed so hard jello came out your nose while playing Travel Guess Who that you’ll remember — it happened to my sister, it was hilarious. Until next time, may your heels be as high as your standards,

THE JUGGLER READY-TO-WEAR DESIGNER KRISTI VOSBECK’S BALANCING ACT.

G

rowing up in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, ready-towear designer Kristi Vosbeck honed her skills working at the family business – The Palace Shoe and Clothing Store. “I worked there over the summers and holidays and loved creating new looks and helping customers find what they were looking for,” explains Vosbeck. “I think these experiences, along with my love for fashion, are what propelled me to apply to Parsons School of Design in NYC. Once I started school, I became involved in fashion in a more professional way, from interning to starting my own company.” Now ensconced in the heart of Manhattan’s Fashion District, Vosbeck’s eponymous line of occasion wear continues to attract a loyal clientele looking for modern designs with a timeless feel. “Classic, sophisticated and elegant,” says Vosbeck of her creations, all of which are conceived and made in New York City. “Many details in the collection are very specific and it’s important to be able to see first-hand how everything is being made,” says Vosbeck of her decision to maintain local production. “I love that everything you need to put together a great collection is at your fingertips here in the Garment District. From fabric vendors, pattern makers and sample makers, to any kind of zipper or button you can imagine. You can find it all within the span of a few blocks of the garment district.”

“LIFE IS FULL OF UPS AND DOWNS, IT’S ABOUT FINDING THE BEAUTY IN ALL OF IT.”

HEAVEN HAS HEELS november 2015 | @HHHEELS

Designing, launching and maintaining a brand in the cut-throat New York fashion scene can be a daunting task but it’s one that Vosbeck takes in her stride. “I think anyone who is creative knows that when your art becomes your work it can be challenging. You have to be able to be free to do designs but also put on a business hat and know your customer while staying true to your aesthetic. Being a fashion designer has taught me that sometimes what you think will happen doesn’t, and things you never imagined, do. Life is full of ups and downs, it’s about finding the beauty in all of it, being grateful for every day you get the opportunity to contribute and give back.” For Vosbeck, the road to fashion fame has been paved with triumphs and challenges. Her latest accomplishment, her first child Kira — and the demands of balancing motherhood with design deadlines. “I always wanted to be a Mother,” she says. “But I didn’t want to have to give up my career to do it. My family and husband have been so supportive and helped make this last fashion week possible. The show, as they say, must go on!” Available at select boutiques and online at KristiVosbeck. com, New Yorkers will have a chance to get up-close and personal at Vosbeck’s Holiday Pop Up Shop November 21st 270 W 38th Street from 1pm-5pm. Check the site for more details. KristiVosbeck.com – A.R.

ANIMAL ATTRACTION HANDBAG DESIGNER DOMINIKA SWIACKA IS AHEAD OF THE PACK.

I

t all began several years ago, quite unexpectedly. “I was still working full time as a production manager for a British women’s wear brand,” explains designer Dominika Swiacka. “In my spare time, I started creating collages from images that I’d taken on holidays. I thought it would look great on a clutch, and that’s how it all started. From my initial experiments with the collages grew my animal-inspired, bold designs which have now become my trademark feature.” Originally from Poland, Swiacka has been based in London for over eleven years. It’s something she feels is reflected in her designs. “I have been exposed to many different influences [living in London] including East London’s diverse cultural scenes which have led me to incorporate animal-inspired prints in a non-standard way, much like the mix and match attitude that seems to have been home-grown here in London.” Production, however, is based in her home country of Poland. She flies frequently to meet with her Production and Manager and Head of Quality Control to assist in every stage of production. “Brand reputation is extremely significant to me,” says Swiacka.

“It’s the only commodity that is truly priceless.” Inspired by the world around her, Swiacka utilizes the latest innovations in technology to print her designs directly onto leather with the aim of delivering that wow factor we’re all looking for. Currently working on two new collections, it’s the creative process that drives her on to deliver designs that empower; accessories that confidently round off the perfect outfit. CROSSING PATHS WHEN GREAT MINDS COLLIDE: THE EVOLUTION OF NODE FOOTWEAR.

A node is a point where two lines intersect. For footwear industry veterans, Joshua Cohen and Lee Cousins, it was the perfect way to describe their creative collaboration. Dedicated to craftsmanship and traditional shoe manufacturing, NODE footwear is an intersection of “ideas, design and culture.” The result is a juxtaposition of modern concepts, and classic, timeless footwear. Node-Studio.com What attracted you to the footwear industry? Joshua: As a child I always liked building things, Lego, model Kits... Essentially shoe making at its core is engineering. My father was a successful shoe line-builder in the U.S.A. for many years, so when he started his own business in Asia, he asked me to join him. It’s a tough business but addictive, that’s the only way to explain it. Lee: I have always loved art, even as a child, and to me, the design of shoes is an extension of this; a good shoe is always a work of art. My father, grandfather and great grandfather were all in the shoe industry, and so it was almost inevitable that I should follow in their footsteps. The design of shoes has been, and remains, an unending passion for me. What do you know now, that you wish you knew then? Joshua: Lee can better answer this since I have only been in the business for ten years but in those years I have learned that its all about the details! Lee: I have been in the industry for over forty years, and in that time I have seen vast changes in the production of shoes, both good and bad. I wish I could have foreseen that the mass production of cheaper shoes, which has flooded all markets, would lead to the loss of individuality. I am not decrying cheaper shoes, as this has meant that good design has become more and more affordable, but for me, this is why NODE is so special to us, as it is keeping the craftsmanship of footwear alive and creating a product that is based on the use of beautiful leathers, traditional last making and quality. Do you think your geographic location has an impact on your design aesthetic? Joshua: I live in China and Hong Kong and the energy there is crazy amazing. Its growth is exploding, and the population is very open to new ideas contrary to what people may think. All the major brands are doing well here, but there is large segment of customer looking for something different and unique. Japanese and Korean brands are interesting here, but more amazing are the local Chinese design talent who have studied abroad and now returned to start their own labels. That’s really exciting

to watch here. We are collaborating with some of them. For example, our shoes will be at the Shanghai Fashion week runway show for VEGA she is really a designer to watch. Lee: I was born and still live in Northamptonshire, which is the heart of the U.K. shoe industry, making traditional shoes, and this definitely influences my design process. I am also a visiting lecturer at Northampton University and it gives me great pride to know that in my own way, I am helping to keep this tradition alive by passing on my skills to the next generation of shoe designers. What has been the brand’s crowning achievement to date? Joshua: For me, it’s been raising the bar on quality and delivering a product that stands on par with high-end European brands. We sacrifice nothing, every detail of the shoe is of the highest quality. As of today, we stand by the product, and people have noticed. Lee: I believe in this product and between Joshua and myself, we have created a brand that combines our personal inspiration with high quality. From the initial concept to the finished product, has been an amazing process. What’s the plan for NODE moving forward? Joshua: To maintain quality, that to us this is the key. For the customer, NODE is an amazing product because of our expertise, attention to detail and quality of the materials. We know how some brands cheat, but we are never going down that road. We are a small unit at the moment but we plan to open showrooms in Hong Kong or Shanghai in the near future. We are already showing in Felicities showroom that has been great for getting exposure in U.K. and beyond. We are very excited about the future because we feel we have a formula, a design process and great people supporting this effort. Lee: As Joshua said, I just want to continue to create shoes that customers will aspire to wear and for NODE to become an established brand.

HAT ATTACK WE CATCH UP WITH BUNDLE MACLAREN, LONDON’S HOTTEST YOUNG MILLINER.

How did you get involved in millinery? I’ve always loved hats but I felt that there was a real gap in the market for an interesting, contemporary and bold designer who could make hats for more affordable prices, so I did a year’s apprenticeship with Gina Foster and then completed the BTEC in traditional millinery at the Kensington & Chelsea College. The mixture of the two was great as got to see how a millinery business runs, as well as being able to learn traditional millinery techniques on the side. What do you love about designing headwear compared to other areas of design? Hats are great fun. They don’t take themselves too seriously and it’s always for a special and exciting occasion when someone comes to you to have a hat made, so you get to build up amazing and very personal relationships with your clients. What three elements do you feel are needed to create an amazing headpiece? Colour, confidence and wit. How do you think your culture heritage contributes to your design aesthetic? Hats are such a huge part of our British heritage. No one does pomp and circumstance like the Brits and we love any opportunity to bring out our finery and play at dressing up! I love the traditions and etiquette that sit alongside wearing hats ie. what type of hat to wear to what occasion. What’s appropriate if you’re mother of the bride or what’s expected if you’re attending the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. What materials do you most like to work with? I love working with felt. It’s wonderfully versatile and durable so you can be really experimental with it. We also use a lot of feathers in our designs which are such a clever and natural material with timeless elegance, colour and beauty. There are no ends to what you can do with the humble feather!

HEAVEN HAS HEELS november 2015 | @HHHEELS

What has been your crowning achievement thus far? I’m just thrilled to have started a millinery design business from scratch in my Battersea kitchen which has flourished five years later into a successful, busy and booming business. It’s a wonderful way to spend your day and earn a living and I feel very lucky.

“NO ONE DOES POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE LIKE THE BRITS”

What does the future hold for the brand? We produced our first trilby collection this year along with a bridal collection and both have been a huge success so we will continue to grow those. Our trilbies are going to be stocked in Anthropologie this autumn/winter which is very exciting. And we’re also in the creative phase of a very exciting new collection called Dare to Dream which is going to showcase some really special designs. So watch this space! BundleMaclaren.co.uk

BEAUTIFUL CHAOS THE JOY OF STARTING OVER WITH DANCERTURNED-PHOTOGRAPHER KANE BONKE.

What made you make the leap into photography? After spending my life in the entertainment industry, there really was no question that I would continue in a creative field once those days were up. I took some time out after my last contract and thought heavily about what made me want to get up in the morning. Obviously being creative was a big point but I have always loved dissecting photographs and creating my own stories. Plus, I have always loved creating beautiful shapes as a dancer, so I decided to put them all together and pick up a camera.

in front of the camera. I think this will be an advantage I take into photography.

Where did you study? I’m studying now! I am a very mature-aged student completing my Diploma in Photo Imaging, in Melbourne Australia. I will be finished at the end of this year. But being a creative, everyday life is a learning process.

What have you learned about yourself through this process — from concept to creation? That mistakes are sometimes your friend and not only can you learn from them but they actually may lead you to where you should be going. To always do what you love and surround yourself with other talented people. I would never have gotten these shots without the talented dancers who worked with me. I trusted them and was able to let go of being in control. I said dance and they did, while I worried about everything else. So I learned that nothing is ever completely wrong and always surround yourself with talented trustful people.

What’s it like being on the other side of the camera? I love it. I think as a creative person, we are born this way. So anyway to get your message outside of your head is a blessing. I loved performing all my life, but I am happy to not be the subject and to be creating the subject at this stage in my life. I think that since I was once a performer, this gives me an appreciation and respect for the talent

What inspired your latest work? Obviously my love for dance and what the human body can do. Dance is Universal, it’s beautiful, it’s chaotic, it’s healing. I suppose in a way, this is my first work that I am showing, and I suppose it’s a gentle transition from my last career to the next. It’s a homage to my former life and my love for dance. It is almost releasing my former self into my new self.

WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF FUN IT’S ALL ABOUT AT-HOME GLAMOUR THANKS TO FOOFOO SLIPPERS.

I

t was never the master plan, explains Will, owner and founder of FooFoo slippers. We’re chatting across the Atlantic about how this U.K. entrepreneur found himself immersed in the footwear industry — and surrounded by pairs of fluffy slippers. It was quite by accident. A few years ago, his then wife bought a pair of vintage slippers Online. Astounded by the cost and loyal-following, he bought a second-hand pair and successfully re-sold them. Seeing a market, he took it one step further and begun the long and arduous journey to developing the cult brand, FooFoo Slippers. Taking inspiration from the retro designs of the 1950s, Will set out to create the ultimate fluffy mule wedge slipper — an iconic style made famous by Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood starlets. “It can’t be that hard,” he explains of his first attempt of making the vintageinspired designs. In the early days, he made the orders entirely himself, often staying up all night to complete multiple custom designs. Although time-consuming — and not necessarily cost effective — he

found he had a passion for shoe making. Knowing intimately the process of manufacturing — what elements he felt were important to the style and integrity of the brand — allowed him to eventually find the perfect manufacturing partner in Portugal who was aligned with the brands high standards. Today, each Foo Foo slipper is handcrafted by Portuguese artisans, who themselves have a long and time honored tradition of quality footwear manufacturing. They are finished by hand in the U.K. which allows for a Bespoke service that is a hit with FooFoo Slipper fans. This is not a mass market brand and only a limited number are produced each month, so you’ll have to act fast to secure a pair of your own. This is a brand that is serious about slippers and providing the ultimate in quality — from the finest Australian sheepskin to a well-constructed scooped-edge wedge heel. It’s time to say goodbye to the UGGs and add a little glamour to your life. FooFooSlippers.com —A.G.

EYE ON BEAUTY

BRUSHING UP WITH THE BEST IN BEAUTY, NATALIE CAHILL, DIRECTOR OF BASE PRO ARTISTS. Describe Base Pro Artists in three words: Professional. Stylish. Creative. What inspired the creation of the brand? BASE Pro Artists was born from professional makeup artists who demanded more from their brushes and accessories. They wanted products which achieved ultimate application, looked stylish and provided a smoother, softer product delivery, making it comfortable for their clients. What’s your beauty background? I come from a makeup artist background and have worked with big publications/brands and the shows, LFW, PFW and NYFW. What do you love the most about being an independent beauty brand? Being independent we have a great sense of freedom, meaning we can create products that innovate the industry and by working directly with makeup artists we incorporate their feedback into our designs. If you were stranded on a desert island, what one beauty item do you take? Moisturizer. Your skin is incredibly important and I never go a day without using it. (And I could use any spare coconuts on the island to nourish my hair) What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? Dirty makeup brushes and sharing makeup brushes. It’s unhygienic and cleaning them is so easy, just a tiny bit of a mild shampoo and wash. Over the years I have seen a lot of infections caused by carelessness. Its not pleasant and especially makeup artists should know better, hygiene is incredibly important. Beauty to me is... That feeling of confidence, creativity and imagination. BaseProArtists.com

THE ALLURE OF ANTI-AGING HAIRCARE TURNING BACK THE CLOCK THANKS TO DEVELOPLUS’ I NNOVATIVE TAKE ON HAIRCARE. It’s 9am on a Thursday morning and I’m headed to Caravan Stylist Studio in the ultra-fashionable Gregory Hotel in New York City. Still slightly jet lagged, it’s the kind of morning appointment that you look forward to; one of pure indulgence thanks to Developlus’ Anti-Aging Hair Treatment System. A lot of products cross our desk here at Heaven Has Heels, with miracle-inspired claims and exotic

ingredients, the intriguing thing about The Anti-aging Hair Treatment System is the way in which it takes new technology in anti-aging skincare and applies it to haircare to fight hair loss, stimulate growth, prevent split ends, battle grays and restore shine. Eager to put it to the test, I offered myself up as a test subject. I figured if it could work on me, it could work on anyone.

DEVELOPLUS’ ANTI-AGING HAIR TREATMENT SYSTEM IS A THREE-STEP PROCESS: STEP 1: REVIVE Massaging the formula into wet hair, this step replaces your everyday shampoo. Revive is a detoxing clarifier, formulated to remove dull residue that aides your hair’s natural shine. Simple lather and rinse. Simple enough. STEP 2: RESTORE This is a 5-minute reconstructing masque formulated with Peptide Amino-Vitamin Complex to fight the graying process, stimulate growth and strengthen your hair’s natural fiber. Although I’m not a fan of waiting — for anything — I can appreciate that our hair needs a little TLC from time-to-time. It’s probably also not a bad thing for my health and well-being to be forced to stop and breathe, if only for five minutes. STEP 3: RE-ACTIVATE 1-2 drops is all you need of the Re-Activating serum, applied to damp hair as a leave-in conditioner. This is a rejuvenating elixir, enriched with Developlus’ Peptide Amino-Vitamin Complex; formulated to reinforce the hair shaft, soften, de-tangle and regulate moisture. Then, I was fortunate enough to sit back, relax and have my So, does Developlus’ Anti-Aging Hair Treatment System live up to the hype? I have to say, yes. My hair was movie-star fabulous. For days, people where commenting on the sheen and healthy glow of my glistening locks. The texture and luster it brought to my hair was impressive. Using a combination of Peptide, Alpha-Hydroxy, Vitamins and Proteins it attacks the “root” of the problem for ongoing haircare rather than

simply aesthetic results. For those looking for an easy-to-use treatment that has tangible results, then Developlus’ Anti-Aging Hair Treatment may well be the answer to your haircare prayers. Retailing at $19.99 I think it’s a great addition to your age-defying arsenal. AntiAgingHairTreatment.com ANGELA GILLTRAP

TEA-RIFFIC DIY BEAUTY HARNESSING THE HEALING PROPERTY OF TEA, ORGANIC INDIA’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE FARMING AND “TRUE WELLNESS” TRANSFORMS A SIMPLE CUPPA INTO AN EXPERIENCE IN S HARED ABUNDANCE. Smuggling and adulteration, criminal gangs and black-market dealings — the history of tea is as complex and intriguing as its many flavor blends. Legend has it that Chinese Emperor Shen Nung discovered the very first brew quite by accident when leaves from a nearby Camellia sinensis tree flew into the water his servant was boiling. A renowned herbalist, he decided to try the infusion. The rest, as they say, is history. Centuries on, tea has become an integral part of the cultural identity of both East and West civilizations. Today, a new generation of tea drinkers are looking beyond the ritual to the health benefits associated with various blends of tea. People now recognize the once exotic ingredients and their corresponding properties, looking beyond the exotic features to factor in the way in which they are farmed, procured and delivered. It’s one of the reasons Organic India has become such a phenomenon among conscious consumers. Founded in the 1990s, Organic India changed the face of agriculture ORGANIC INDIA TULSI GREEN TEA FACE MASK AND EXFOLIATOR Is your complexion looking a little dull? Liven it up with this easy-to-make face mask. This recipe also doubles as a skin exfoliator due to the loose leaf tea. Ingredients: 1 Tbsp ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi Green Tea (loose leaf) 2 drops ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi-Holy Basil Essential Oil 1 Tbsp raw honey Mix all ingredients together in a mediumsized bowl. in northern India by implementing a holistic approach of sustainable farming, education, and shared abundance. It works with thousands of small family farmers to cultivate tens of thousands of acres of sustainable organic farmland throughout India. Farmers and “tribal wildcrafters” are educated in organic and biodynamic agricultural practices, the company picking up the tab for the necessary organic certification. It then purchases the harvested crops and herbs at a premium market price. Crop rotation is an important part of this process, and farmers grow crops on their land for themselves supporting their family with a sustainable income as well as improving their own health and environment. It’s a mission of True Wellness — one that aims to provide training and a “life of dignity” to farmers, preserving health and environmental sustainability while bringing health, happiness, and True Wellness to each Organic India drinker.
