F

or design duo Fantich & Young, footwear goes far beyond fashion. It reflects the cultural history of the human race. For centuries, shoes have been a predictor of class; they have symbolized status and even warded off evil. We may think of them in terms of seasons and trends, but the fact is, it is a human privilege to wear shoes. Something we are reminded of as we talk design and inspiration with London’s hottest contemporary design duo. The toothy numbers you see before you, aptly named Apex Predator, were created as fine art sculptures inspired by the 2008 financial crisis. “The work highlights the bailout and whitewash of the

financial crash that accumulated not only in the political policy that some banking institutions were too big to fail, but were too big for trial,” says the pair. The shoes feature 1,050 teeth dentures, and although they are technically wearable, they are to be seen rather than worn. So how long does it take to make one of these shoes? That, you will have to guess as the pair keeps tight lipped. “Creativity is like a magician’s trick,” the pair answer. “Once you know how it’s done it’s not as fun.” With little to no promotion, word of the Apex Predator project quickly spread throughout the

digital world, attracting local and international fans fascinated with this original and thought-provoking take on an everyday item. “We were surprised when Apex Predator went viral and was then picked up by the mainstream media,” the pair comments. “The work then took on a life of its own; its original concept got blurred as people projected their own personal narrative on what kind of person would wear a pair of shoes such as this.”

fresh perspectives can be sought and discussed, and you feel able to solve theoretical and practical problems much easier.”

“The fact that so many diverse people from around the world connected with the work made us smile. The work straddled the creative disciplines of Fashion, Design and Fine Art, so with hindsight the demographic audience was always going to be larger than our other artworks.”

From the Museum Hundertwasser to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Apex Predator has been exhibited around the world with more exciting developments to come. “Due to the success of the Apex Predator we will be launching in September 2014 a pedigree lifestyle brand that will dramatically expand on the Apex Predator range,” says the duo. “It will be tailored for the discerning client with the taste for power and exclusivity. The full Apex Predator range will be exhibited in London, early autumn.” Now that’s something we can sink our teeth into. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

Mariana Fantich and Dominic Young have long been creating innovative pieces that are known to spark heated debate. The East London based artists first started working together in 2008, having been neighbors at the same creative warehouse. “When you work as a team, you can bounce off each other,” says the pair. “You get less precious with your ideas;

ETHICAL HEELS VEGAN FOOTWEAR BRAND BEYOND SKIN, PROVES THERE’S STYLE IN SUSTAINABILITY.

W

hen you make the choice to become a vegetarian you do so for a variety of reasons. For some, there are ethical implications for others, it’s a matter of health and well being. For Heather Whittle and Natalie Dean, the idea to create a vegan footwear brand stemmed from a combination of frustration and vanity. “At the time there was simply HEAVEN HAS HEELS august 2014

no stylish, good quality, nonleather footwear available,” says Whittle the brand’s Marketing Director. Launched in 2011, the duo saw the need for ethically produced, stylish footwear for vegetarians and meat lovers alike. “In the past, attempts to combine fashion and ethics generally resulted in one side of the equation being sacrificed,” says Whittle. “Beyond Skin was created to prove that fashion

and ethics did not have to be mutually exclusive.” A code of ethics governs the brand’s operating philosophy encapsulating the spirit of Beyond Skin, which is “To produce and work in a manner that is non-exploitative to animals, humans and wherever possible the wider environment.” Fundamentally, Beyond Skin is a cruelty-free brand, with sustainability at its core—and gorgeous shoes at its helm. Acknowledged as the first British, indie, luxury, vegan footwear brand, the trend for more sustainable, cruelty-free brands is on the rise. “We believe that brands like Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood— designing for Melissa shoes— and Natalie Portman’s

collection of vegan shoes helped increase awareness about vegan shoes and helped break many dogmatic preconceived ideas about what vegan shoes are like,” says Whittle. Many cruelty-free brands have been born as demand is on the increase. “You may have noticed that some large brands now offer vegan styles amongst their leather collection due to growing demands,” says Whittle. “Tragedies like the Bangladeshi crisis have gathered momentum for the ethical fashion movement, which has been great exposure for the cause. Large high street brands have had more pressure put on them through media exposure, encouraging people to be more and more keen to have transparency in regards to where

their purchases are from. This will organically lead people to discover ethical brands, where they previously, perhaps, would not have been researching.” The accessibility of information has helped this movement to grow with social media playing an integral role in educating and sharing information without censorship. It’s much harder to hide in today’s informationsaturated world. For Whittle and Dean, the decision to create a vegan footwear brand has not always been easy but has had its own rewards along the way. “It has been very challenging at times,” admits Whittle. “We were a little before our time, which made our life harder as we had to forge out a new market. It was key to build strong relationships with the press to be able to raise a discussion about non-leather shoes and ethical fashion, to try to break down many stereotypes that have been formed in these areas.” The days of ethical fashion being synonymous with dowdy design are gone. In its place brands such as Beyond Skin have developed new materials, styles and color palettes never before thought possible.

“Our philosophy creates the opportunity for us to embrace an unusual use of fabrics, prints and weaves within our designs, which has become our signature style,” says Whittle. “Our main struggle has been finding suitable, reliable manufacturers who can make non-leather shoes. We have met countless factories that have been unable to work with us due to the materials we use. It’s paramount to us that we don’t sacrifice quality at all, to continually demonstrate that a vegan shoe can be stylish and beautifully made.” Apart from commercial viability and the ability to balance the books, Beyond Skin measures its success by the amount of media coverage the brand and the ethical fashion movement receive as a whole. “For us, brand awareness and exposure are paramount, and benchmarks our success,” says Whittle. Celebrity support is also key in a market such as this. “It’s a great feeling when we get a celebrity wearing our shoes. Olga Kurylenko recently stepped out in some Beyond Skin’s at the Oscars this year. It is milestones like this that make us feel like Beyond Skin is succeeding, and our efforts are paying off!”

Inspired by everyday life in Brighton, Beyond Skin’s designs have a vintage feel with a modern twist. It’s an aesthetic that has attracted fans from around the world, and soon many more will be able to discover this innovative footwear line with a London and U.S. flagship store in the pipeline. Regardless of your taste or style aesthetic, one of the best things about vegan footwear is that you don’t have to be vegan to wear it. “We would like Beyond Skin to be accessible to as many people as possible,” says Whittle. “We promote ourselves as being fashion forward, thus attracting people to our shoes who love them just for the design. We have purposefully positioned ourselves this way, to keep our audience wide and help to change the face of ethical fashion,” says Whittle. In a world that often puts profit before ethics, Beyond Skin represents a new generation of footwear innovators that are offering stylish solutions to a global issue. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

HAT TRICK THE MILLINERY MAGIC OF DESIGNER PHILOMENA KWOK. “I make my hats for women who want to be noticed for their own reasons,” says Australian-based milliner Philomena Kwok. Offering custom, bespoke designs, Kwok crafts her creations in a grotto-like atelier in Crows Nest, Sydney Australia. The awardwinning milliner started out in jewelry design before turning her talents to haute head wear and for those searching for the perfect crowning accessory, they are glad she did. “I came to millinery in the most organic way,” says Kwok. “I started out designing jewelry, specifically bespoke bridal jewelry, and would continually get requests for the gemstone headpieces I was making at the time. Through a journey of discovery, learning, and delight in pushing the creative boundaries, I slowly moved into making hats and headpieces full time.” Kwok’s jewelry background helped pave the way for an onslaught of innovative designs, leading to the launch of her Ready-to-Wear accessory label, Featherhead. “My roots in jewelry design definitely gave me a different appreciation of the mechanics involved in creating wearable pieces,” says Kwok. “In the early days, there was a lot of crossover in the materials I would work with and I still do experiment with many techniques that differ from those more traditional milliners use.” Whimsical and alluring it’s Kwok’s bespoke creations however, that many yearn for the world over. “There is a certain escapism and whimsy to wearing a bespoke hat with which you can either amplify your personality, or shade it, showing only the parts

you want,” says Kwok. Rather than catering to the extroverts of the world, Kwok is quick to reiterate that wallflowers are welcome. “I would hope that any woman wearing one of my hats feels exactly how she wishes to feel—whether that may be mysterious, unique, understated or the brightest light in the room.” Apart from runway shows and countless awards, Kwok’s crowning achievement has been seeing her creations come to life on ordinary people living out extraordinary moments. “Through the history of my label I have been lucky enough to work with some incredible designers, stylists, performers and photographers. However, my most notable achievements are creating those truly memorable moments for the real women who wear my pieces— from the bride who realizes for the first time she is getting married when she sees herself in her veil, to the singer who puts on the signature headpiece that will burn itself into the memory of her fans.” Inspired by her surroundings and fellow milliners, Kwok gives her home credit for her success and unique designs. “Australians have a very distinct aesthetic,” says Kwok. “I find we—myself and as a collective—are drawn to bold lines and color palettes. Being at the other end of the globe means the fashion scene is less influenced by what’s going on next door. This results in the freedom to experiment, without the pressure to be different for different’s sake— something that I think is evident in my work.” With a strong racing culture and fellow milliners who propel each other to succeed, this is one designer who can truly make heads turn.— NICOLE ROSS

SWEET LIFE MEI PAK, DESIGNER OF ACCESSORY BRAND TINY HANDS, KNOWS ALL ABOUT THE SWEETER SIDE OF LIFE.

Waffles, pancakes, cinnamon donuts... When it comes to delectable scents, it doesn’t get much better than these. So what happens when you combine our love of food with our lust for fabulous jewelry? You have accessory brand, Tiny Hand’s, recipe for success. “Tiny Hands developed very organically,” says designer and founder Mei Pak. “It started as a hobby when I was just 15 years old

in high school. I had no idea how to run a business. My craft began with beaded jewelry and handbound journals. Then I was introduced to polymer clay and loved how versatile it was. I taught myself how to make fake candy and desserts out of clay and never stopped!” Featured on TV shows such as Parks & Recreation these handmade, scented pieces are as cute as they

are cool. Its success is still a surprise to its founder who has even created do-ityourself kits for budding polymer clay crafters. “When my husband quit his job the year before a notable growth spurt, I knew I had to put on my big girl pants and make great things happen in order to support my family,” says Pak. “In some ways, I am surprised at how Tiny Hands has grown to what it is today. It has become a household name for some, and people can spot a Tiny Hands necklace in a crowded room.” Launched in 2006, Tiny Hands is much more than a fashion fad. Based in Minnesota, these creations are customizable and have found their way across the globe. Conversation-worthy, Tiny Hands pieces represent cherished moments, rituals started with family and friends, food shared (or stolen) between loved ones. “I love thinking how what I’m creating will make hundreds of people smile,” says Pak. “Food is a common ground for so many of us; it’s the way to our hearts. That’s one of the few reasons I keep doing what I do.” With everything from corn dogs to donuts on the style menu, you’ll want to explore the sweet life of Tiny Hands. Bon appetite! — NICOLE ROSS

online confessions BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT OUR FAVORITE ONLINE DESTINATIONS.

We were there when it launched and from one shoe lover to another, we’re thrilled to take you behindthe-scenes of Just-Soles.com with founder Heather Holt. What was the inspiration behind Just-Soles.com? The inspiration behind Just-Soles. com was giving shoe lovers the opportunity to wear shoes they never wouldn’t normally be able to, and to have a platform where a shoe community can sell, and share together. What’s the best thing about running an online boutique? The best thing about running an online boutique is having the ability to reach people from all over the country. Having a physical store would be amazing as well, but it limits the amount of inventory I would be able to have, and it wouldn’t be user driven. Is there ever a time when you want to steal all the items for

yourself? All the time. Especially if it’s a Brian Atwood! A few of the Giuseppe (Zanotti) shoes that have gone up I wished my foot was bigger so I could rent them. I get excited when I get emails saying I have an item that needs approval before it can be published on the site. Then I get to open it and look at the shoes, and I get excited. I also get excited that I’m not the only one who is willing to rent/share my shoes. It lets me know there’s a market out there for this business. What does an average day look like at Just-Soles.com? Every day is different. Somedays it’s getting all the new items up and published, and handling the back in SEO. Answering emails if there has been an issue between users in a rental situation. I had a huge issue back in April with two users on a rental (the rental was not mine) that lasted for about 10 days. Coming up with content for all the social media outlets to reach new users. We haven’t done a lot of advertising as it is pricey so, trying to be creative within social media that is a great way of reaching people. Reaching out to bloggers and stylists who have a large following to establish a relationship to get a write-up with them. I try and run a promo every

month. What’s the most fun part of your job? I love sending personal thank you cards to everyone who rents, or buys from the site. Whether it is from my inventory or one of my users, I love adding that extra special touch. I also love writing on the blog. Love! Who are some of your favorite designers at the moment? My favorite designer—now and always—is Brian Atwood. I also adore Sophia Webster. Her collection that came out for Spring ’14 with the butterflies was so gorgeous. I love Casedei and the blade pumps. Also, Giuseppe Zanotti. Louboutin always does such strong, bold, inventive collections. His Fall ’14 was pretty incredible. Also, his ‘So Kate’ pump is becoming the go-to since his ‘Pigalle’ was pretty painful after about ten minutes in it. Both have incredible silhouette’s but the ‘So Kate’ is much easier to wear. What’s next for Just-Soles. com? I’m trying to do a “sell or rent for Breast Cancer.” It is a huge undertaking. Trying to get in touch with a public person/ celebrity to donate shoes for the cause. Now who can get me Blake Lively’s number?

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. Heavenly heel lovers have long cursed stilettos yet, can’t seem to stop themselves from purchasing pair after pair. It’s a love/hate relationship. On one hand, we love to wear them. On the other, we know that our time (and enjoyment) in them is limited. Enter Katharina Hermes, creator of HeelBopps. “I had the idea for HeelBopps after a friend of mine showed me a pair of heel protectors. They were so ugly!” she says. Unsatisfied with the look and design of the models currently on the market, Hermes set about creating a slip-on heel protector that was both stylish and practical. Having started her first successful handbag line at the age of sixteen, Hermes is no stranger to the industry—or the work that’s involved in getting a new concept off the ground. Based in Germany, she met with various engineers to develop a prototype for HeelBopps—a slip-on element that fits onto all highheels of more than 6cm in height and up to 1.3cm in diameter. It was developed to be a high heel accessory that would not only look great, but also help stabilize the heel so that stiletto lovers could get better use out of their heavenly footwear. In June, she launched them onto the wholesale market at Berlin’s Premium trade fair to great success so expect them to start hitting stores very soon. But take note, these are not your average throw away heel protectors. The basic Heelbopps sell for around $50 with bling-ed out Swarovski encrusted Heelbopps retailing at $100 or more. — HeelBopps.com

DINER’S DELIGHT TRANSFORMING THE HUMBLE HEEL ONE SPRINKLE AT A TIME. Searching for a show stopping gift for the shoe lover in your life? The Shoe Bakery may be the answer. Located in Orlando, Florida, the Shoe Bakery has been giving the humble heel the sweet treatment since opening for business in March of this year. “Initially, we received a lot of mixed reviews,” says Chris Campbell, Head Baker and Founder of the Shoe Bakery. “A lot of people felt that it was a crazy idea and we still get that now, but we are getting better responses where people think it’s creative, fun and interesting.” The Shoe Bakery specializes in decorating heels to look like various forms of dessert—and no, they are not edible. “The bulk of our orders come

from birthdays,” says Campbell. “We get a lot of orders from husbands who want to surprise their wives. We are just now starting to get more requests to do shoes for weddings.” The Shoe Bakery accepts custom orders via their website (ShoeBakery. com), or fans can choose from ready-to-ship creations such as the Mint Ice Cream Heel and Teal and Purple Cake Wedges but hurry, these sell out quickly. “I was told ladies love eclectic heels but I didn’t think it was to this degree,” says Campbell, whose background is in animation and fine art. What can we say? We enjoy the sweeter things in life. Bake on! — NICOLE ROSS

DRESSING FOR DINNER

HAVE WE BECOME A NATION OF DERELICT DINERS?

In the 18th Century dinner was more than simply a meal, it was an occasion. For the upper class, it was a chance to meet a potential suitor and reinforce ones social standing. Today, it seems we’ve lost our desire to dress for dinner, or is today’s dress code, simply a symbol of our luxury to choose?

honesty hour BATTLE OF THE SEXES: WHAT IS THE PERFECT OUTFIT FOR A FIRST DATE? CASUAL COOL OR GORGEOUS GLAMAZON?

H ER SAY

“Dress up! You only get one chance to make a first impression and why not be as sexy as hell?” — Jessica, Stylist “I think the best outfit for a first date is one that presents the most typical you. If you are a jeans-andcute-top girl then wear that, if your normal attire is to dress it up then follow suit so to speak.” — Brandie, Makeup Artist “Go all out. At least I do. First impressions are everything.” — Anne, Designer “I think if it’s nice weather, wear a dress. You always look hot and sexy in a dress.” — Kazandra, Nurse “In the era of online dating I think you have to at least make an effort to look like your picture! ” — Natalie, Buyer

HIS SAY

“I wouldn’t want a girl to under dress. I think go one notch higher than you would normally wear. You want to wear your outfit, not let it wear you.” — Tim, Personal Trainer “Jeans on the first date are cool. That’s when I get to see what kind of girl she is. So if I know they’re isn’t going to be a second date, I won’t feel bad that she wasted a good outfit on the first one.” — Troy, Mechanic “It really depends on the place of the first date, but for me, I prefer dressed up.” — Miguel, TV Presenter “Modesty is the best policy. There’s nothing wrong with showing a little skin but seriously, no girl looks great with bits hanging out. Let’s leave something to the imagination.” — Robert, Model

“There is just no comparison between having a dinner date with a man and staying home playing canasta with the girls.” — Marilyn Monroe

ORDERING ETIQUETTE: IS THERE SUCH A THING? Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick, founding director of The Etiquette School of New York proves that a little etiquette goes a long way. Q: Is it ever okay to order the lobster? A: It is okay to order lobster if your date suggests ordering it, or is ordering it himself. I wouldn’t, however, order it on a first date since it is a bit messy to eat. (Lobster tails would be a much better choice than a whole lobster.) Q: When it comes to drinks, should you order cocktails, wine or follow suit? A: A drink is a drink. One should order what one likes, but only in moderation. Of course, if your date is ordering a bottle of wine, it would be nice to share it with him/her. Q: Is it polite to let a man order for you? A: Letting a man order for you is a personal choice. If he would like to order for you—as men did in the past—why not let him? If you object however, to a man ordering for you, nicely tell him that you would like to order for yourself. Q: Any recommendations to ensure as few ordering faux pas as possible? I recommend ordering something that is easy to eat and is eaten with a knife and fork on a first date. It is much easier to make a good impression at the table. Knowing how to properly use one’s utensils, as well as how to place them in the resting and finished positions is the least one should know. Also, never put a used utensil back on the table. — Etiquettenyc.com

a touch of

MAGIC

AS TRADE SHOW SEASON BEGINS, WE GET THE INSIDE SCOOP FROM ADVANSTAR GLOBAL’S PRESIDENT OF FOOTWEAR LESLIE GALLIN.

You have the job of running four huge footwear shows; do you still come across shoe designs that inspire you? You bet. Nothing is as thrilling as seeing great talent, be it in design or quality of materials and craftsmanship. It is like being the one who finds the next Picasso. How would you describe MAGIC? MAGIC is where buyers from all over the world gather to select the fashions that you, the consumer will see in stores next season. MAGIC is where it all happens. New York and Paris Fashion weeks are all about glitz, glamour and runway shows (and we LOVE that), but MAGIC is where the business actually occurs. MAGIC has roughly 70% of the fashion retail industry represented at the show, an average of nearly $200 million per-day ($600 million over 3 days of show) order volume and 85% of the top 50 retailers in attendance. MAGIC is critical to the business of fashion. HEAVEN HAS HEELS august 2014

Since your beginnings in footwear, how much evolution have you seen within the industry, and trade shows particularly, throughout your career? I started in this industry years ago, running apparel divisions for Geoffrey Beene, Louis Feraud and ABS. When a friend introduced me to someone who was taking over a “Shoe Trade Show” called WSA... It all began. It was love at first try on, and I quickly realized footwear was my passion. When I started out, the footwear industry was for the most part an all-boys club, but that’s changed tremendously. Today, we see brilliant women like Diane Sullivan, CEO of Brown Shoe and CEO’s at Marc Fisher and Kellwood, and many more. I think the industry caught up and realized how incredibly capable and talented we women are! There is also room for new talent on all levels now—young designers and executives are embraced. It’s been amazing to see the growth of this industry through the years. How important of a role do you think MAGIC plays in the fashion and accessories industry? Huge. MAGIC has over 5,000 brands across every classification, trend and price

point—the entire men’s and women’s apparel, footwear, accessories and sourcing markets are represented in one destination over three days in Las Vegas (every February & August). Plus we have the largest & most qualified gathering of buying power around. As a brand in the industry who wants to be in stores—large, small, online and everywhere in-between; you should definitely have a presence at MAGIC. Up-and-coming talent is a huge component for MAGIC’s growth. What qualities do you look for in new shoe designers? Vision, passion and understanding of business. Without these qualities, one cannot hope to succeed. What advice would you give to up-and-coming industry insiders who want to work behind the scenes in footwear? There is no such thing as an overnight success or an easy way to the top. It’s like a good athlete who makes the game look effortless, but what you forget are the years of practice. Show your talents and your willingness to pay your dues. Stick with it. Nothing in the world takes the place of perseverance and good old hard work.

TALES OF A WELL HEELED WOMAN I ACCIDENTALLY ORDERED A $500 BOTTLE OF WINE ON A FIRST DATE. I was set up on a date, and it just happened to be after a long, exhausting day. I’d just finished up a huge project at work, and I desperately wanted to cancel, but decided to go and make the best of it. I’m putting myself in date mode, relaxing and readying myself for a glass of wine, promising to do the best I can even though my eyes are half closed. We get to the hotel—I’m wearing a little burgundy Herve fit and flare skirt, a pair of caged black booties, a cute tank with a leather jacket over it—I sit down, and the waiter asks me what I would like to drink. “Pinot Noir,” I respond. “What kind?” he asks. Now there’s a million kinds of Pinot Noir, my head is spinning so of course I say, “The best kind!” I’m not a big drinker, so I think he’s going to bring me a glass. It never occurred to me that he would bring me anything else. Then I see him talking to my date, whispering behind the menu. He walks away and all of a sudden a bottle comes to the table. As he pours me a glass, I’m thinking oh; my date wants the same thing as me, awesome we’re both going to be drinking the wine, I’m going to have three sips, I’m going to be drunk,

it’s going to be great! For him, this date goes from being chatty and exciting to can’t wait to send this girl home as I end up with a bottle all to myself. That very same day, my friend downloaded an app to my phone where you can take a picture of a bottle of wine to see where you can buy it and how much it cost. I thought it would be fun to show him how to do it thinking we just got this bottle of wine, let me show him this cool app, and if he likes it, he can put it on his phone. It shows up that the bottle of Pinot Noir we (well I) ordered cost $500. Oh crap. Of course, I didn’t say anything because the waiter talked to him before coming back to our table with the bottle so I figured he knew. I was so embarrassed because you don’t do that. I don’t just show up on dates and order obscenely expensive things, and I didn’t know how much money this guy makes or who this guy was. Before making me do so, he asked me if I wanted to take the bottle home. I never heard from him again. Moral of the story show the app before ordering the wine and rethink blind dates altogether. —MORTIFIED WINE LOVER

This month, we put the enabler of fashion consumption, Nikia Jefferson founder OF ChiTownFashionista.com, in our well heeled hot seat. Flats or Five Inches? Ugh! That’s a hard one. Underdressed or Overdressed? I’m a firm believer that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. What’s Your Fashion Mantra to the Masses? Fashion is subjective. TIPS FOR TAKING FLAWLESS SELFIES from Caroline TienSpalding, Perfect365’s in-house professional photographer Pay attention to the lighting: Harsh lighting can give your skin a strange hue or cast shadows that change the shape of your face, so pay attention. When you’re indoors, turn off your camera’s flash to avoid looking washed out. When you’re outdoors, look for a spot with natural lighting. The sunset is your best friend: The hour or two before sunset is the best time to take outdoor photos because it provides the softest outdoor lighting. Duck for cover: If you’re taking a photo mid-day, you’ll want to find a shaded spot. That’s when UVs are the strongest, which often causes washed out photos and harsh unflattering shadows also known as “raccoon eyes”. Work your angles baby: The most flattering look for most people is a slight turned head, where only one ear is visible from the frame. This will naturally slim your face and make your cheekbones pop. Watch how low you hold the camera: If you’re not careful holding the camera too low, you’ll discover a double chin you never had. For most, camera at forehead level yields the best results.

Celebrity stylist and owner of Ryan Darius Salon, Ryan Nickulas, shares his secrets to looking ten pounds lighter without breaking a sweat.

HOW IT’S DONE “The goal is to elongate the shape of your haircut,” explains Nickulas. “To achieve this your hair would need to be layered in a way that will remove the excess weight and slim down the overall silhouette of the cut. A parting closer to the center also tends to slim facial features.”

CELEBRITIES ROCKING THE SLIM CUT “Women with a strong jawline like Khloé Kardashian and Jessica Simpson have been rocking a center part with soft pieces no shorter than their jaw bone, for that elongating effect,” says Nickulas. “For women who like a little more movement around the face, a soft long fringe could do the trick.” “Jennifer Lawrence has worn the perfect fringe to frame her face. Parted slightly in the middle and cut with a steep angle resting perfectly across her cheekbones. This fringe will grow out beautifully or could be cut longer for those who can’t commit to the fullon fringe.” Whichever route you choose to go, we’re saying a big thank you because let’s face it, a visit to the salon is preferable to a trip to the gym. — RyanDarius.com

eye on beauty WE CHAT WITH BEAUTY’S MOVERS AND SHAKERS. When it comes to girl power, look no further than Me and The Girls—a luxury, organic beauty brand founded by former critical care nurse Sharon Hackney. A passion for developing beauty products combined with a strong sense of social responsibility led to beauty re-born, as Hackney combines the best in precious oils and exotic butters to create luscious products for beautiful skin. This month we caught up with the brains behind the beauty for a quick five question quiz. What’s playing in your office right now? The Grammy’s 2014. It’s a fabulous collection of music. If you were stranded on a desert island what one beauty item would you take? Sunscreen. I could use it as a base to make all kinds of other beauty products and save my skin from damaging rays. If you had to describe your brand in three words, what would they be? Engaging. Transparent. Innovative. What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? I hate beauty products that do not deliver on their claims. It’s not fair to consumers. What is your beauty mantra to the masses? Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!
