Belle Vue House renovation set as contracts exchanged

Work to renovate Belle Vue House in Sudbury has moved a step closer as Babergh District Council confirms sale to local period property specialists McCabe & Abel. The house was brought back onto the market in January 2023 with developers interested in the retention and regeneration of the property invited to submit a bid on an informal basis.

All bids were considered by Babergh District Council and the preferred submission was presented to cabinet for the final decision with specialist property developers McCabe and Abel successfully winning the opportunity to bring the house back into use.

Richard Abel, partner, McCabe & Abel commented: “McCabe & Abel are absolutely delighted to have been chosen by Babergh District Council to restore Belle Vue House in Sudbury.

“Having nearly 30 years’ experience with restoring Listed and Special properties, we are looking forward to reinstating Belle Vue House as an outstanding backdrop to the wellloved Belle Vue Park.

“We will be applying for planning permission shortly to split the house into two family homes, safeguarding Belle Vue House for the foreseeable future. We hope the people of Sudbury will support the plan and embrace the restoration and saving of

this much-loved beautiful building.”

Belle Vue House and some of the surrounding land, including the former outdoor swimming pool site, had been vacant over recent years. In autumn 2022, the house became available after Churchill Retirement Living withdrew their plans which included developing on the land including the infilled pool site and renovating the house.

With the future of Belle Vue House now secured, plans for the remaining land including the former swimming pool site, which had been proposed for development for a new, accessible park entrance, will be considered by Babergh District Council in due course.

The coronation weekend was a colourful occasion that gave us many reasons to congregate and celebrate. Comparisons between 1953 and 2023 could scarcely be avoided, from the grand imperial but distant and deferential occasion seen on the tiny black and white tv sets of 1953 to the more personal, inclusive event available on multimedia and in full colour.

Unless one was privileged enough to sit in the chancel of Westminster Abbey, ironically the best view was not with those fortunate enough to have a seat in the nave, but for us, at home on TV. Inevitably questions of privilege, monarchy and state arose. These concerns are by no means new. The ancient Israelites were unhappy with their system of governance, which was a collection of local judges, and the people envied nations with kings. Generally, chaos reigned in Israel with each doing what was right in their own eyes. Against God’s advice an age of monarchy was heralded by a tradition of anointing and crowning. There were mixed results and discontent quickly returned. With the arrival of Jesus, many hoped that the occupying Romans would be overthrown in a glorious revolution and liberation would ensue. Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem as the anointed one yet within a week there were shouts of “not my king!”.

Instead of wielding power and oppression over one’s subjects, by contrast (and as we heard at this coronation), the Christian approach to leadership is not to be served but to serve. Jesus was political and revolutionary in declaring himself to reign over an eternal kingdom. The global and radical revolution he instigated was to change the hearts of individuals. Jesus understood that true freedom is only achieved by realising that we are all created equal, and in the image of God our maker.

Whatever system of governance we subscribe to none has endured like that begun by Jesus, who was born into poverty and knew rejection. His coronation was profoundly colourful and personal and in following him, we can know true freedom, justice, and peace.

I pray that you may know the peace of God, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and the love of Christ.

New Charity Shop Opens in Sudbury

DEBRA UK, the butterfly skin charity, opened a brand new shop on in Sudbury at 11am on Thursday 25th May, just in time for the long weekend.

Based at 8 Market Hill in the heart of Sudbury, this brand-new store offers a fresh and welcoming retail environment in which to browse a huge range of high quality, affordable pre-loved items, from fashion and accessories, to homeware and books plus much more.

DEBRA is the national charity and patient support organisation for people living with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a potentially fatal genetic skin condition that causes constant pain due to unstoppable internal and external blistering.

In 2023 DEBRA’s ‘A Life Free of Pain’ appeal aims to raise £5 million. Revenue generated through DEBRA stores enables DEBRA to continue to provide vital community support services for families and individuals with EB, and fund potentially life-changing research that could lead to effective treatments that stop the pain of EB.

DEBRA CEO, Tony Byrne said “We are delighted have opened a brandnew store in the centre of Sudbury and we look forward to welcoming the local community to shop, donate and volunteer with DEBRA and help us stop the pain of EB.”

Why shop at DEBRA?

JUNE 2023 FACTS AND FIGURES

Recently we have seen heard and read so many comments, criticisms and judgements regarding local councillors and council elections. I have been researching facts looking back over many years and the various councillors whatever political party they were affiliated. We need to reflect on the hours of dedication that is frequently ignored, and some sadly vilified and treated with contempt.

In the late 1990s I read an account of a Sudbury Town Council Meeting when it was recorded that the councillors had a long and heated debate regarding the hypothetical decision as to, if there was a visit by our Queen; what and who should be in the pecking order? Although, a royal visit was not likely to happen in the not-too-distant future.

If you are elected to serve as a councillor, it can be a huge learning curve, a loss of an individual’s family and leisure time, concerned. Worried and disgruntled constituents from your ward, emails, letters and telephone calls. It is not always appreciated that Town Councillors do not receive any financial gain for their time and effort. District councillors do, depending on their responsibilities, which are taxed.

If you consider the mean average of hours spent just in Town Council meetings alone, e.g., with a full council meeting for eleven months a year, plus at least two a month for finance, planning, leisure, policy and human resources, at two and a half hours maximum each meeting; the total hours in one year,82.5 times, that multiplied with four years. The result is 330 hours, or 13.75 days. This doesn’t include reading minutes and writing or reading reports. For the Mayor and Deputy Mayor far, more time is dedicated to serving the Town having served in both roles three times I respect and value those who have served in the past and are about to serve for the next year. Our new Mayor is Cllr Jan Osbourne, and her Deputy Cllr Alison Owen. Fortunately, they have previous knowledge of the role as Jan’s husband Adrian has served as Mayor twice and Alison’s father Jack has served for three terms, so they are very aware of their busy time ahead.

The first Lady Mayor was Mrs K.M. Hitchcock who was appointed in 1963. Another reflection of how women were not considered for this role, considering they had been allowed to vote since 1928, when the Equal Franchise Act was passed. Since 1963 until present day sixteen female Mayors have been elected in fifty years which is still only 32%. Just thinking about previous Mayors, we have many to thank for their contributions to Sudbury. Rev Tony Moore who served in 1975 and 1983. He represented the town by travelling to Sudbury in Massachusetts during the Bicentenary Celebrations. He launched the Town Christmas Fair and was the First Chairman for Friends of St Peter. He was also a painter who exhibited his paintings in the Visions of Sudbury Exhibitions. I purchased one of his paintings of cattle walking across Market Hill. Peter Goodchild served for two terms with great dedication and enthusiasm.

Peter for so many innovations, e.g., Setting up the Christmas Tree Festival on behalf of Sudbury Rotarians, Sudbury Rowing Club, Sudbury Town Twinning, and the organisation and arranging for the beautiful wall hangings in the Town Hall Assembly Room. If you have some time to spare do take the opportunity to visit the wonderful displays and collections in The Heritage Centre, we have another previous Mayor to thank for this, fortunately, he is very much alive and continues to serve with Sudbury Town Council. If you are unable to visit this Centre, it is easily available online

Hadleigh Cemetery

Natural Burials

Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider natural burials. There is nothing new about natural burial, far from it, as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial.

Hadleigh Town Council are therefore pleased to announce that the natural burial meadow at their cemetery on Friars Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk is open for those who wish to have a more environmentally friendly or natural burial choice. There is now also the availability to scatter loved ones’ ashes in the new Rose Garden and another new addition is our Tree of Life (right) where memorial leaves can be added. With this being newly installed, we must bear with growth of shrubs and bushes on the Rose Garden and natural meadow as they will take some time to fully flourish.

Planting, planting and planting.

Here’s a quick update about what is happening at Ark Farm…planting. That’s it, thanks very much, see you next month!

Seriously though, there is a lot of planting happening now, it always seems to just happen at once, every year, and each year I find myself surprised at just how fast things grow!

As I have mentioned before, Ark Farm is now, this season, going into full production, our conversion period is over and we can finally call ourselves

Organic, as of May 2023!

This doesn’t really change anything, I won’t be putting my prices up, the veg hasn’t gained some magical new health benefits and we haven’t just solved climate change, I also doubt it will bring in a sudden surge of new customers. Non-the-less, it does feel like an achievement and a welcome mile stone, particularly as when I arrived at Ark Farm, there was a poorly looking field of spring wheat (I think it was wheat…?) growing, barely, from the hard stoney clay soil, a mysterious patch had died off in the middle of the field and many folks questioned whether or not I should just find a better piece of ground where crops might actually grow.

So, to now have a field full of fruit and veg, and an organic license…and… actually beginning to earn a living, I think this Organic License carries a bit of weight behind it, a hard-earned piece of paper that in reality, only I care about! Quite satisfying.

Speaking of satisfying, the strawberry patch is looking beautiful, we have our first flush of flowers and even a few green berries appearing. The raspberries are looking great and I think I may have finally mastered broad beans, something that, for some reason I have been having trouble with in recent years. I caught the scent of the bean flowers on the breeze the other day, whilst weeding early beetroot, that was an extremely gratifying moment, one where all the work becomes worth it.

SUDBURY

Anyway, that’s all I have to say this month, to be honest, my mind is full of to do lists, this time of year is hectic to say the least so, if you don’t like hard work…become a lawyer!

Back to planting…

Thanks everybody!

My mission, this month, is to find a home for two retired racing greyhounds that tower over me and have languished at SESAW for over a year.

Bodie and Mikey, aged five and four respectively could be separated but that would be a shame as they have always been together. They need an experienced home with no cats, two on-lead walks a day and a comfy sofa. If you have room in your heart and home for these beautiful creatures, please leave a phone message or email with your contact details.

If you, like me, are not an early riser, here are two events for you! We will be selling various items at a Boot Sale on the Football Ground in Long Melford, CO10 9JY, 2.30pm on 9th June. We will also have a stall and a Pets Corner at the Summer Fete on Leavenheath Village Green, CO6 4PY, 1pm of 17th June. Do pop in to say hello if you fancy a trip out.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing! I should explain about Maisie She arr ived at SESAW one Chr istmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a bir th defect on her legs She patiently endured a long recover y per iod, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking ever yone who cared for her Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for shor t walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy

More volunteers are still needed to look after the dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals until the right persons comes along. If you would like to help or are looking for a new pet to complete your family, please visit our website or call in to see our many rescued animals. News from The Christopher Centre

Welcome from Kathy and Linda, Centre Coordinators.

Flaming June, let’s hope so after a very disappointing May and a soggy coronation we hope it didn’t spoil your celebrations.

It has been another busy month at The Christopher Centre! With new groups taking advantage of our low room hire prices why not come along and see if we can provide a space for you and your groups, family functions or a well needed office space away from home!!

We currently have a lovely office available to lease on a monthly or quarterly basis. If you would like to have a look at it please feel free to pop in and we can show you around or look on our website for more information on size etc. The Christopher centre is a lovely place to base your office with friendly staff, in the heart of town and a car park on site who could ask for more?

For those of you who are wondering what we do here, The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities or family events without the mess in your home. We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house a number of offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour.

Fly tipping

Sadly, in May we have seen several cases of fly tipping in our car park/ cartlodge and also in our large bins. This is very disappointing as we are a registered charity and will have to rely on our very kind volunteers to take this rubbish to the dump.

Thank You

We were very fortunate to have had some very kind donations last month and we are very grateful for them. This helps us to keep the centre running and being able to offer the services that we do. This also ensures that the Christopher Centre is a place in the community for the community.

A big thank you to Tony Fisher CEO of Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors. Tony came along to discuss our rights in the workplace with regard to Menopause. Many ladies have have been mistreated due to their symptoms and this has been highlighted in the news. (For information on this discussion please do not hesitate to contact us)

To all our wonderful room hirers, group leaders, organisers, Trustees and friends of the Christopher Centre for their continued support and encouragement.

And as always, a HUGE thank you to our amazing Volunteers who keep the Centre running smoothly, running our reception, keeping the outside Courtyard area clear and doing small maintenance jobs.

Volunteers:

We are always keen to welcome Volunteers who have skills they could offer the Centre, Gardening, Odd Jobs, Decorating, Reception Cover. We already have two volunteers who work very hard in our courtyard throughout the year making this area clean, tidy and presentable but as they say every little helps.

Please contact Kathy or Linda at info@christophercentre.org.uk or telephone 01787 313914 if you would like to get involved.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Concert

6 pm on Sunday 2nd July at St Gregory’s Church in Sudbury Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that their next concert will be on Sunday 2nd July at 6 pm in St Gregory’s Church in Sudbury. The two principal works for the evening are Mozart’s 3rd Horn Concerto and Méhul’s 1st Symphony. Mozart’s Third Horn Concerto is a real concert favourite, with a wonderful slow movement and a very jolly and witty hunting horncall of a finale. The soloist for the evening is the orchestra’s very own Robert Spivey, twice Mayor of Sudbury and a player in many local orchestras. The other main work for the evening is by Étienne Méhul, considered a master composer in France who should be much better known over here. His first symphony is a great piece, full of exciting and full throated driving lines. Other pieces for the concert include the Dances from Delibes’ Le Roi S’Amuse and Fauré’s Pavane, a beautiful, if far too short, piece, full of unspoken longing.

Robert has been performing with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra for close on twenty years and plays with many other local orchestras including Ely Sinfonia, Colchester Symphony, Suffolk Sinfonia and Wolsey Orchestra. His musical talent was identified as soon as he started playing the French Horn at the age of 11. After leaving school and going to university though Robert left the horn behind and did not take it up again for over 30 years. When he did take it up again he got lucky, he found a fantastic teacher in Jonathan Lipton of the Guildhall School of Music and a wonderful local accompanist, Ian Flowers. Jonathan is still guiding Robert in developing his playing but sadly Ian died a few years ago. Robert has asked that this concert is dedicated to the memory to Ian and his wife Sheila without whose support and encouragement he would not be the player he is now.

Étienne Méhul was a contemporary of Beethoven and their styles are not too different, full of strong and exciting passages. In France Méhul was particularly famous for his operas but tonight though we perform his 1st Symphony which was written at the same time as Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Both symphonies are dramatic and full of tension and we are pretty sure this will be the first time ever this work has been performed in Sudbury. So do come and be part of this historic event!

This will be a wonderfully enjoyable evening of music, do come and enjoy. For all information about the concert please go to www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com

Raising funds for Sudbury's Hive Community Hub

Among a number of events to raise funds for the Hive Community Hub in Sudbury, Andy Welsh (one of the Hive Trustees) and his wife Janet have taken on the challenge of walking the 190-mile Coast to Coast path from St. Bees in Cumbria to Robin's Hood Bay in Yorkshire, so they thought they would invite sponsorship for their ambitious hike to support the Hive Hub.

Andy and Janet began this adventure on May 6th and opted for 17 days continuous walking, averaging at about 12 miles per day. The longest day was 14.5 miles and the toughest probably the 13 miles from Patterdale to Burnbanks, which included the ascent of the highest point, Kidsty Pike (2,560 ft). However, the first five days in the Lakes involved at least 2000 ft of ascent each day, which was the hardest part of the route. The walk was designed by Alfred Wainwright as an alternative to the Pennine Way, which he regarded as a bit of a slog. Although currently an unofficial and mostly unsignposted trail, it will become an official National Trail in 2025.

Andy and Janet are 63 years old and this is their first long-distance trail. They opted for the relative luxury of pre-booked accommodation and transport for their baggage, but walked each day with just day packs containing extra clothing, food, water and essentials for mountain and moorland walking.

They have walked west to east, and followed the tradition of dipping their feet in the water of the Atlantic and taking a pebble from the beach in St Bees and transporting it to Robin Hood's Bay, where they will deposit the pebble in its new home and dip their toes in the North Sea.

Andy and Janet's progress could be followed on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Every donation (small, medium or large!), could help the Hive Community Hub reach their fundraising goal. Donations can still be made via GoFundMe, https://gofund.me/efcd193d.

A number of other Hive events are planned during June, with presentation of the Volunteer Awards taking place on Saturday 3 June, followed by an organ recital at 6 p.m. from Christopher Moore, a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a talented musician. He will offer an hour-long programme, including The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Bach's Fugue in G major as well as Dubois' Toccata. The organ recital is free and offers a glass of wine at the close. However, donations will be invited to help raise funds to maintain the organ and also contribute towards funding for Hive.

Make sure you can help your partner or a parent, should they need assistance

Tuesday Lunch-time concerts resume on 13 June, with ShantyFolk, a landlocked acapella shanty crew who love singing shanties but also like to weave in the occasional folk song, followed on 20 June by Pauline O'Brien and Mike Thomas, brother and sister who have sung together at folk events for many years, and have a varied repertoire, as well as playing a variety of different instruments, and on 27 June Voices from Sudbury Choral Society presenting an eclectic and varied programme from their repertoire. Each of these concerts is free of charge, but donations will be invited as audience members leave!

The former United Reformed Church was bought by Hive in October 2021 and provides facilities for local voluntary and charitable groups, who undertake a host of activities, including support for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.

What is needed to be able to help?

Major renovation of this historic building is required to create a much more versatile space for use by local people. Almost £500,000 will be needed to take forward all the work planned. However, the next phase, costing around £70,000, includes remodelling of the kitchen to create an office, as well as completely gutting the existing kitchen so that modern units and equipment can be installed, adding insulation to the roof space above Friars Hall and redecorating.

If you wish to help with funding this work please contact the administrator on sudburyhive@outlook.com.

To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.

If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?

LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

Did you know that we support patients and staff across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust? Did you know we don’t just support you with your general health, but with your mental health too? And we do the same for the amazing staff who care for us.

Donations have allowed us to provide a cancer counsellor and a staff psychologist. Read on to find out more about their roles.

Michelle

Michelle is the cancer counsellor. We have funded her role for the past 2 years and continue to do so. Since she started in post, Michelle has transformed the service. She not only has sessions with patients on an individual basis, but she can guide them to services and programmes that will help them during and after their cancer treatment including Pilates and men’s exercise classes which are also funded by My WiSH Charity.

The one-to-one sessions are vital to help patients navigate their journey and can help reduce the risk of psychological effects this disease can have long term.

Not everyone wants or feels the need to see a counsellor during their treatment, but we are so proud to be able to provide Michelle for those that do, and we know that she makes a difference to those she sees.

Marianne

Marianne joined the Trust during Covid to give staff much needed support. As you can imagine, working in full PPE in such challenging and unprecedented times took its toll on staff right across the Trust. Many had to learn new roles and adapt in ways we never knew would be needed. Nursing staff became like family to patients as their own loved ones were unable to visit. All this while worrying about what this unknown illness could cause.

Thanks to your donations to our Help Your NHS Hospital Covid Appeal we were able to introduce Marianne to the Trust to help and support staff. The West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has staff working from all over the world. Covid was especially hard for these staff as their family were overseas. Being able to offer them someone to talk to was vital.

We are so pleased that we were able to bring Marianne to the Trust. She continues to work with all staff who need some support for whatever reason.

We all need someone to talk too during trying times. Even if you have family and friends close by, sometimes you don’t want to burden them or you need someone neutral to lend you an ear. We can’t provide these services without your donations so please do support My WiSH Charity and help us make a difference.

Advice Column June

I’ve just had my bathroom retiled, but I’m not happy with the work. At first, things seemed to be going well, but then the tradesperson left to do another job and I had to chase them for updates. They did eventually come back and finish the job, but the work was pretty rough around the edges. They also left all the old tiles and plaster for me to dispose of, which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve now got the invoice, but I don’t think the price reflects the work done or the service I got. Can I challenge this?

It’s always frustrating when you run into problems with home improvements. You mention that the job looked “rough round the edges”, if this is to a degree you could consider the job unfinished or unsafe, you should be able to get the tiler to come back to fix it. You could also suggest removing the old tiles might be considered as part of finishing the job.

If the tiler considers the work complete, it’s worth knowing you’re protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which says the tiler should have completed the work with ‘reasonable care and skill’. If they haven’t done this, they’ve broken the law. The Act means you’re legally entitled to ask the tiler to fix the problem (if they provided the tiles as well as the service) or get money refunded (if they just provided the service and you bought the tiles). They should fix the problem or refund you in a reasonable amount of time, without causing too much inconvenience. As you’ve received the invoice for the work but not paid yet, now would be a good time to ask them to fix the issue or you can negotiate a lower price for the work.

Let the tiler know you understand what you’re entitled to. Speak to them in person, or contact them in writing/over email, there are template letters on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, either way make sure you have a written copy of anything agreed. Before you contact them, it’s a good idea to take photographs to use as evidence of the problem. Make notes about what happened, including dates and times. You should also gather any paperwork and receipts - was there any prior written agreement about who would dispose of the old tiles? Was the final cost in line with estimates or quotes given to you at the outset of the work. If not, there is advice on the Citizens Advice website about steps you can take. If you’re struggling to come to an agreement with the tiler, there are other steps you can take to solve your problem these include using ‘alternative dispute resolution’, which is a way of solving disagreements without going to court. There are full details about how to do this on the Citizens Advice website.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Rotary Club of Sudbury

News

On Monday, 24 April, Sudbury Rotary members were joined by partners and friends to celebrate the Club's formation (in 1950) with a Charter Night dinner at The Boathouse Restaurant in Sudbury. Guests of honour were the (then) Mayor of Sudbury, Ellen Murphy, and Mel Edwards who runs the 'Pick up and drop off' scheme at the Town Hall, supplying much needed provisions for a number of people. Entertainment was provided by Irie J who sang a number of classic tunes during the meal and afterwards, with some members getting to their feet to dance!

May was a busy month, even allowing for three bank holidays, with the Annual General Meeting, at which the past year's activities were reviewed, taking part in Crucial Crew (this year run by the Bridge Project) as well as the visit of a guest speaker on 22 May.

Looking forward to June's events, our speaker on the 5th will be Robin Drury from Sudbury, with Club Assembly on June 19th, at which the incoming President, Tony Platt, will outline his plans for the Club for the year ahead. Tony will take over the President's role on 3 July, at the beginning of the new Rotary year.

Rotarians will be helping their community by providing a bar at the Hive Community Hub, on Friday 30 June, when The Djangoliers, a quartet playing tunes in the style of Django Reinhardt, make a welcome return visit to delight their audience with a whole evening of music played by two guitarists, one double-bass player and a saxophonist. Tickets at only £10 each will be available from the Tourist Information Centre in Sudbury and on the door. The concert will raise funds for refurbishment work at the Hive Hub.

During the past few months, a number of visitors have joined our lunch-time meetings at Newton Green Golf Club, with a view to becoming members of Sudbury Rotary. They will join an organisation which welcomes men and women from all backgrounds, and undertakes numerous projects across the local community and further afield which will benefit others in need. Meetings take place on the first three Mondays of each month and we would be delighted to welcome you. Lunch is optional, but our meetings give an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Please let our Secretary David Taylor (07341 290415) know if you plan to visit us, so that we can advise the restaurant on numbers.
