like to introduce myself for those of you who don’t know who I am - my name is PC Katie Jarrett and I am the Community Engagement officer for Hadleigh and the many villages in the surrounding area. I transferred to Suffolk last April but prior to that I’d been a Police Officer in Surrey Police for 17 years. I have been in this role now since September and if there was a role made for me this is it. From School inputs, attending fetes, partnership working, attending community meetings and of course the social media posts keep me extremely busy. On the whole this remains a really lovely area but it’s not exempt from crime and disorder. On top of the list is vehicle antisocial behaviour. This is a fairly frequent occurrence involving the car parks around Hadleigh. Meeting in large groups, loud exhausts, performing donuts (skidding in a circle). Primarily just having a complete disregard for the locality and the people effected by their behaviour. My Safer Neighbourhood team colleagues work tirelessly trying to reduce this type of activity. Sadly its not just vehicle ASB we are suffering from but ASB from a group of youngsters in the villages who think its amusing to knock on doors and run away, to congregate in places not meant for them and leaving a pile of rubbish in their wake. Do you know where your children go after school/at night? Perhaps a word to find out what they are doing. My colleagues have been making enquires and visits to see children and parents are imminent.

Plan for the future, protect your interests and preserve your wealth

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are becoming increasingly popular among couples due to the desire to preserve family assets for younger generations. But many are not familiar with these types of Wills or realise their benefit until speaking with a solicitor.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution.

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late. This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard.

How your property is owned is important Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do? A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property. Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income. Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income. These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and peace of mind to the surviving spouse/partner.

Speak to an expert from Holmes & Hills Solicitors It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you.

For expert advice on planning for the future, contact Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and speak with one of our specialists from your local Holmes & Hills office.

The River Stour Trust is a charity formed in 1968 with the aim of keeping as much as the river as possible open for navigation from Cattawade to Sudbury for everybody to enjoyed. From Easter to the end of October we have boats at various locations along the river. Boats are kept at the Granary in Sudbury and do trips through Cornard lock to Henny. A boat is positioned at the Talbooth restaurant for pre or after lunch charters, to bring the bride to her wedding by water or the couple to their reception after the marriage ceremony. The boat at the Talbooth is also available on a Sunday for those having lunch to take a short trip on the river. The other part of our operation is at Flatford where we offer walk on half hour trips from Flatford to Fen bridge and back. The Trust has only one full time and one part time paid member of staff and the other people that do work for the Trust are all volunteers. The volunteers skipper the boats, help clear the river of over hanging tree branches, reed clearance, maintain the jetties, and carry out boat maintenance in the winter. The Trust’s present project is to get the Dedham lock back into operation. The new lock gates are made all that is required now is the funds to fit them. Like most organisations the River Stour Trust is always looking for volunteers either for skippering the boats or undertaking the other jobs that need to be done. If you would like to volunteer have any questions and would like more information please contact me on email boac707@btinternet.com and I can either put you in contact with the right people in the Trust or answer your question.

Call for volunteers at Little Hall

The very fabric of Little Hall captures the history of Lavenham and the growth and later decline of the cloth trade. In a prime position on the Market Place there has probably been a building here since the 13th Century when Lavenham got its market charter. Built for a family of clothiers, it is a typical hall house of the type found all over southern England.

As the cloth trade in Lavenham declined in the 18th and 19th Centuries so did the fortunes of the wealthy clothiers who left to seek business elsewhere. These fine houses were divided up and by the middle of the 19th Century the house was home to five or six working families.

It was purchased in 1924 by twin brothers Robert and Thomas Gayer Anderson along with the Great House next door. The brothers set about restoring the property naming it ‘Little Hall’ in 1935. Both brothers travelled widely during their military careers and collected artefacts from around the world. Little Hall is filled with their collection of antiques and antiquities and retains the atmosphere of a friendly family home.

In the 1960s and 70s it became an outpost of Kingston College of Art at that time in Surrey. The house was offered to Suffolk Buildings Preservation Trust and was opened as a museum in 1975.

Little Hall is the only medieval residential property in Lavenham open to the public and is run entirely by volunteers. If you would like to be a part of the Little Hall story, we would love to hear from you. You can email us at recruit@littlehall.org.uk or check out our website www.littlehall.org.uk where there is lots of information about the house and garden.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering at this lovely old house and garden please join us on: Saturday 25th February 2023 11am -1pm Find out what roles are on offer and meet some of the present team. There are some wonderful stories to tell and volunteering is incredibly rewarding. Even if you only have a few hours a week to spare, any help would be most welcome.

“Top Marks” for Great Cornard Jobs Fair

James Cartlidge MP will be holding a Jobs Fair in Hadleigh on Friday 17th February, which follows hot on the heels of his successful event in Great Cornard last April. The Fair led to a number of uplifting real life success stories: one attendee was offered a job on the spot and started the following Monday. Over 400 people attended last year’s event with more than 50 exhibitors showcasing their vacancies and opportunities - leading to multiple positive outcomes for local people and employers.

“The selection of employers, the mix of advice, jobs and colleges, apprenticeships etc, made for a wide spread of choice and options. It is something that should definitely be held more often, as I don't think people really know what is out there locally. Top marks, that's what community should be about, when is the next one?” – Attendee

“It was good to have the opportunity to find out more about local employers. We found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. It would be lovely if this event could become a yearly event.” – Attendee
“We found the event very useful and it was a good opportunity to help people understand the job opportunities. From an ‘exhibitor point of view’ I wanted to congratulate you on the organisation and engagement on the day. We were impressed with the number of companies who attended and the steady flow of people looking for employment. We look forward to future events.”

I appreciate that cost of living pressures will remain a key concern for most readers. In terms of the Government’s response, we are providing direct support with energy bills but also addressing the underlying cause, i.e., higher inflation, driven by Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Regarding support, typical households will have received around £1300 help this winter, through the Energy Price Guarantee (estimated to be worth £900) and £400 Energy Bill Support.

Of course, not every household is ‘typical’, and many South Suffolk constituents use heating oil, but I can confirm we are making available a £200 ‘Alternative Fuel’ payment for such households, which should be paid automatically in February through your electricity supplier. I can also confirm that the Energy Price Guarantee will continue into April, supporting most households with an estimated further benefit of around £500, together with additional cost of living payments for pensioners and those on benefits.

As to the bigger picture, the Prime Minister started the new year by announcing his target to halve inflation by the end of the year. This doesn’t mean that in the months ahead the price of things you buy will fall by 50%.

Rather, it means that as a Government we will work hard to ensure our ‘fiscal’ policies (i.e., decisions on tax and spend) work as closely as possible with the independent Bank of England to keep a lid on pressure that might otherwise leave prices higher for longer.

In particular, this is about good housekeeping – running our national public finances in a responsible fashion, which is why we’ve had to take difficult decisions on certain taxes, freezing some for the time being. However, we have done this in a compassionate way, ensuring that we keep borrowing down but still providing billions more in funding for the NHS and schools, whilst of course delivering the extensive support with energy bills.

Finally, we need to look to the future and focus anew on local economic growth. Our unemployment rate remains very low – a blessing in such challenging times – and in fact most local businesses are struggling to recruit. This is why on Friday 17th February, I will be holding my next constituency Jobs’ Fair at Hadleigh High School, with over 40 exhibitors including: engineering firms; retail and logistics; public sector employers (e.g., the NHS and police); plus colleges and further education providers.

Are you a driver aged 60+?

Would you like advice on how to keep driving safely for as long as possible

GrandDriver, run by the Suffolk County Council Road Safety Team, is a scheme for anyone over the age of 60 who currently drives and would like to keep driving for as long as possible. There are two parts to the scheme - a theory workshop, and a driving assessment. The workshop lasts for 3 hours and we discuss how driving has changed, and how to cope with this as we get older, how our health can affect driving, and simple adaptions you can make to ensure your comfort in the car. There is a chance to discuss any concerns you may have about driving; we also have a refresh on the Highway Code and do some hazard perception. The driving assessment is arranged at a time and place to suit you, takes place in your own car and lasts for around an hour. The trainer will discuss any aspects of the drive that are increasing your risk and offer suggestions and alternatives to reduce your risk. At the end you'll receive a written report outlining all that was discussed. Both the workshops and the driving assessments are currently free of charge to attend. The next workshop is in Hadleigh on 21st March 2023.

Bob the Gardener’s February thoughts…

“One of the first jobs after leaving Chadacre, an agricultural college near Bury St. Edmunds, was working on a large dairy farm in Saudi Arabia. I worked a two-year stint rearing calves. Desert life was harsh, and with minimal change in the weather from one month to another, it really taught me to appreciate the changing seasons when I returned home to Suffolk.

We all have our favourite times of year. Without Winter, we would not appreciate Spring. My point is, as the days gradually lengthen, you may feel that unstoppable urge to get out in your garden and plant stuff! If you are afflicted with this desire, please think of us here at Hollow Trees farm plant Centre…We have great plants at great prices, ready for their new homes!” www.hollowtrees.co.uk

hear this on TV but it’s been our clear message to clients for the past 14 years. When we first meet new clients, we like to be able to say ‘Before we start, there won’t be any inheritance tax – not a penny – when either of you sadly passes on’.

We can say this for two reasons. First, there’s a lot of misunderstanding about the tax (generally, property and other assets up to £1million are exempt if the Wills are drafted correctly). Secondly, we take an interest in new clients before we even meet them by checking public information about them and their home.

This gives us a flying start to the first meeting, usually with the clients benefitting from home advantage. This can also provide a useful reminder –being ‘on site’ - of any family treasures to be mentioned in the Wills or letter of wishes.

The Will Business now has over 1,000 clients, based mainly in South Suffolk and North Essex. We provide a fully professional service. This includes indepth legal experience, common sense, documents which people understand, safe storage of their Wills and excellent value for money (also, there’s no VAT). There is no place nowadays for home made wills or wills made by an uninsured amateur. There are tricky legal requirements and simple mistakes can make the will invalid – bad news for the intended beneficiaries and a risk never worth taking by the will maker.

Every week, there are reports about inheritance claims, typically involving millionaires and celebs, but thousands of families have unreported cases stuck in the same sad queue.

Insurance claims at a local level have become more common for two main reasons. First, increases in property values can make it worth doing, with old council houses still worth around £250,000. Secondly, there are solicitors (like the old ‘ambulance chasers’) who offer their services to claimants on a ‘no foal no fee’ basis. The fee for a successful claim can be substantial and make a large reduction in the beneficiaries’ expectations.

We witness just about every Will we write (which helps us to confirm its validity and resist any claims about the will maker’s mental capacity) and the signed Wills are kept free of charge in the fire safe at our associate’s offices in Ipswich.

Many of our clients are elderly and for them, at a late stage in life, it is not usually a matter of just making a Will. We make many Lasting Powers of Attorney (both types) and for those who haven’t yet made at least the LPA for property and finance this has become an urgent matter. LPAs are only effective once they have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian and this can now take a worryingly long period up to six months or more – an age if you are suffering from ill health or losing mental capacity.

In the absence of an LPA for health and care we would normally recommend the client to sign an Advance Decision (or Living Will as they are often called) which we send to the client’s GP for placing with the medical records, to be used if mental capacity has been lost.

These are just some examples of the areas which we cover in our advice to clients. If you would like more information or a quote, please call us on 01206 263420 / 07543 426401 or email us at trevordodwell@aol.com.

Starting on Saturday March 11th 2023 there will be a regular Community Indoor Market on the Second Saturday of every month in Elmsett Village Hall, (IP7 6PA) from 10am - 2pm.

I have invited stall holders who hand craft, repurpose items or sell home-made or Eco friendly products and there will be refreshments throughout the day supplied by various Community groups each month. There will also be collection points for some recycling items that you can’t put in your blue bin e.g. batteries, foil blister packs and glasses.

Please come and support your local community and artisan traders. We would love to see you there, treat it as a warm space, a place to meet up with friends for a cuppa, plus maybe find some unusual and unique items to buy. If you are interested in having a stall or organising the refreshments one month for your group, please contact Jan King on 07712 424901

Hadleigh Men’s Shed

Hadleigh Men’s Shed was launched in October 2022 and is currently preparing its first workshop space which we have for 12 months. The committee is continuing to work on the setup and we now have a constitution, have filled the roles of chair, secretary and treasurer and a bank account has been opened. It is also now a member of UK Men’s Sheds Association.

permanent home for the shed and explore the options. New members are continuing to join.

Some tools and furniture have kindly been donated. Although the setup is still in progress, in January we had our initial session (on chisel sharpening) which was very informative and well attended.

Work and training sessions are currently being held regularly on Wednesday evenings 7pm to 9pm. Activities will expand over time.

Hadleigh Men’s Shed is a relaxed place supporting the local community by providing somewhere to • meet up and make new friends

• learn new skills

• share expertise

• work on or get help on your own projects

• work on community based projects

• enjoy companionship over a cup of tea

“It is not what we make but coming here and being a part of a community which is important.”

Thank you, everyone!

On behalf of The Christmas Present Trust, we would like to thank everyone who helped us once again provide a free meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for those in Hadleigh and surrounding areas who could not be with family or friends. We would particularly like to thank the following: Andrew’s Butchers (the turkey was amazing); all those involved with The Ansell Centre; Keith Avis Printers; Hadleigh Cares; Hadleigh Town Council; Brett Valley Lodge; Hadleigh Orchestra; Franey, Rand and Pest House Charities; Kathryn Grandon and Simon Lanning from Babergh District Council; Suffolk Building Society; Bob for his wonderful potatoes; Erivica Cakes; Under The Bridge ukulele group; Ginger Bee; Julia and Neil from Hadleigh Food Bank. Our volunteers once again have been superb over the three days; decorating the hall, peeling the vegetables, welcoming and helping our guests, collecting guests and delivering meals, serving the food, washing up, tidying and finally packing everything away. We could not manage without them.

A final thanks to all those not yet mentioned; those who gave their time, donations, support and good wishes. Hadleigh really shines through all of you. We will be having a get together in the spring to have a catch up with our volunteers and interested parties. We now need to bring more people into the organising of this event so that it can continue for many more years. The date will be announced on the social media pages for Hadleigh and, of course, in the Hadleigh Community News.

Tomlinson Groundcare

Tomlinson Groundcare is situated in 20 acres of lovely grounds at Buxhall near Stowmarket and offer 'try before you buy', free friendly advice and the option of free demonstrations at your premises.

When looking to purchase a new lawn mower it is necessary to work out the size of area to be cut, the terrain and the finish you would like to achieve as this will make a huge difference to the mower you require. We probably have the largest range of ride on mowers in Suffolk, as well as John Deere we also have in stock the ALKO T22-110 High Grass mower £4899, which makes easy work of high grass and also the ALKO Solo rider R7-65 HD which is suitable for a small garden £1899.

Lawn mowers will be soon be started for the first time whilst some will start easily, others maybe a little more difficult. If you have a mower that refuses to start, drain the old petrol and replace with fresh. Due to the ethanol that is now added to normal pump petrol, unleaded fuel only lasts 30 days before it deteriorates, it can also absorb moisture over time resulting in starting problems. If this doesn’t solve the problem, contact our service department for help and advice.

Another option to starting issues is to try an Alkylate fuel (Aspen 4 is one example but other makes are available) for four stroke machines that remain stable for up to five years. For chainsaws, strimmers etc. that maybe used less frequently, we recommend Aspen 2.

As well as petrol mowers, we can supply a range of AL-KO and EGO battery mowers, strimmers, hedgecutters etc.The batteries are interchangeable between tools making them very economical and versatile. We are selling an increasing number of these each year.

The company was founded by the late Robert Tomlinson in 1991 who always wanted his customers to have an experience rather than just purchase a mower. That is still our ethos today while we can't sell you time, we can sell you the right equipment to save you time and enable you to enjoy your garden. We look forward to meeting you, at our premises or on our stand at the South Suffolk, Hadleigh and Suffolk Shows.

Hadleigh Garden Club

We began the new year with a colourful talk by Chris Whiting on Dahlias. As you can see a man passionate about these showy blooms. He is a national judge and exhibits himself, always coming away with awards.

The amount of Dahlias he grows need vast storage to over winter once lifted from the ground. But even wrapped in layers of fleece he has sadly lost numerous amounts to the frost. So most of us take the chance and leave the tubers in the ground to take their chances. A mulch will give the plants some protection. The painstaking efforts of exhibiting has so many extra hurdles as Chris explained. The warmth in a show marquee can cause the blooms to droop even before judging. Or just days before a show the entire crop are attacked by red spider and a years work destroyed. But that’s gardening!

What ever we grow be it fruit and vegetables or flowers nature can be kind or cruel. That is the constant challenge and gives us satisfaction or disappointment. So let’s plan and plant for 2023. The excitement of new shoots and buds brings the promise of a good year ahead.

Our February meeting is back in the Guildhall , entrance opposite St. Mary’s Church. This months talk will be “Gardening in the Shade” and as always guests are welcome at £4, members £2. The competition is a small posy although I am not sure what will be appearing in the garden, aconites or snowdrops perhaps.

We look forward to welcoming you on February 13th at 7.30 pm.

Tea and coffee together with a raffle - do join us.

Hadleigh Flower Club

For our December meeting we had a wonderful demonstration from Helen Sheard from Ingatestone, Titled “Festive Spirit”. Her designs were all foam free, and she was very informative about using sustainable materials in the flower industry. She did more modern designs with a great mixture of traditional and more modern colours. She informed us about her journey into flower arranging and how she had travelled the world working with flowers. A very festive feeling had by all. January we had no meeting, but we will be back February 14th 2023, this will be a little different from our usual demonstration where we will be welcoming a speaker from Perrywood Nursery, Tiptree. The Hadleigh United Reformed Church. Arrival 7pm for 7.30pm start. As always, we will look forward to seeing you.

St Elizabeth Hospice Fundraising - Our guests in assembly during January were Woolly and Owl-fie from St Elizabeth Hospice. Community Fundraiser Brandon visited the school to explain to the children how their donations would be spent. We raised £778 for the hospice over Christmas which when added to our 2022 fundraising means we have raised a total of £1823 - a fantastic amount for our small school. We thank everyone for their support in helping us to raise such vital funds.

Hadleigh Cemetery Natural Burials

Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider natural burials. There is nothing new about natural burial, far from it, as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial.

Hadleigh Town Council are therefore pleased to announce that the natural burial meadow at their cemetery on Friars Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk is open for those who wish to have a more environmentally friendly or natural burial choice. There is now also the availability to scatter loved ones’ ashes in the new Rose Garden and another new addition is our Tree of Life (right) where memorial leaves can be added. With this being newly installed, we must bear with growth of shrubs and bushes on the Rose Garden and natural meadow as they will take some time to fully flourish.

Sow, Grow and Farm Topic

What a fantastic start to our new Geography topic in Kestrel class. The children all came into school dressed as farmers and Mr Pratt brought his tractor into school for the children. He also gave a talk with slides about farming, we learned so much and want to thank Mr Pratt for visiting us! Goldcrest class have been looking at the book ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy. They used the book to inspire them and have started to make blankets for Mr Bear. They found this quite a challenge, but those of them that have completed the task so far have shown great perseverance!

If you are considering Bildeston Primary as a school for your child, we would welcome a visit. Please phone the office on the number below. We would love to meet you.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our walk on Saturday 11th Feb will start and end in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and proceed to Kersey via the Monks Path (for those wanting a shorter walk they can meet the group at the Kersey Bell at 1015). From the Bell we will take a circular walk of 4.5 miles via College Farm, Lindsey Hall, Bridge Farm and back to the Kersey Bell around 1230. After a refreshment break the group will return to Hadleigh via Kersey Vale. The distance of the entire route is around 12 miles and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1430. As usual, we aim to maintain a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr). Walkers should be aware that any weather is possible in February so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

Our Accelerated Reading Scheme is Launched The start of the Spring Term has seen us launch our Accelerated Reading Scheme. This scheme helps the children read at their appropriate level and when ready they can progress to the next stage. It is designed to help with their understanding of the story and they take a short quiz each time they finish a book. We are looking forward to the positive results this scheme will bring to all aspects of learning within our school.

Sammy the Sea Squirt! Suffolk Mind in partnership with Suffolk County Council visited our school to deliver a yoga-based activity session to our younger children in Hedgehogs and Otters Class. The children took part in breathing activities based on the story ‘Sammy the Sea Squirt’ to help bring to life the positive links between movement and mental health. All the children received a copy of the book to enjoy at home and remind them of the techniques learned to help them keep calm.

Suffolk Energy from Waste Facility

Visit Our Eco Council are discussing how we can improve as an Eco School and coming up with initiatives and changes we can make, both big and small throughout the school to reduce the amount of waste we generate. To enhance the children’s understanding of what happens to our waste in Suffolk, Badgers and Owls Class visited the Suffolk EFW Facility at Great Blakenham. They learned and saw how our domestic waste is turned into electricity and how the by-products of this process are used in other industries. The children were able to take part in interactive tasks to show how much energy we needed throughout the day and how they can do their part to reduce the waste they create. They made pledges to help reduce waste such as, using reusable drinks bottles and not using plastic bags. If you get the opportunity, it is worth a visit!

Pantomime Time After all the fun leading up to Christmas, we decided to have an enriching activity in January when we all went to see the Rock and Roll Pantomime – Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the New Wolsey Theatre. It was a lovely experience for the children and a chance for them to engage in live theatre together with their friends.

We’re Back and Raring to Go!

After a successful Winter Concert (despite some of our lovely members having caught the dreaded cold that seems to be lingering longer than usual) Hadleigh Community Choir have started rehearsals for their next venture. Roll on Summer! We are looking forward to finalising the recording of a choir cd which will be out this year and distributed free of charge to care homes, community groups and individuals who maybe unable to access our concerts, funded by a grant from Hadleigh Town Council. In addition, we will be performing at a Hadleigh Fashion Show on Saturday 29th April, organised by Liz Wilson, and at the wedding of our much cherished Musical Director, Sarah Gallop. Our Summer Concert will be on Saturday 15th July and, as if that wasn’t enough excitement to see us through the current weather, we have been invited to sing at Lullingstone Castle in Kent over the August Bank Holiday.

It’s going to be a busy but exciting few months ahead and we would love you to join us. We invite anyone who likes to sing, to rehearse every Thursday in Hadleigh URC, Market Square (next to the Ansell Centre) from 7.30pm - 9pm. There are no auditions, we will provide you with music and MP3s so you can rehearse at home, and we look forward to welcoming you. On behalf of HCC, I wish you a Happy 2023.

at The Shelley Centre

Looking back at previous blogs for February I see masks everywhere. I like this picture of a rider trying out the pad on my back, with two masked helpers giving him confidence. I’m there gently giving his muscles a workout and strengthening his core, but he won’t know that! Its my secret which I share with all the live ponies who work here. We have been lucky to engage the help of Abi Sinclair to help the team out with expert horse care whilst Lyn takes some time off. Welcome, Abi, even though Babs and I don’t need your help at all, we hear the herd is so glad you are here. As usual for February we are muddy and wet, but the super big sitting room cum kitchen is sheltering the human volunteers from the wort of the weather. There’s lots to look forward to in 2023: we shall reinstate the Shelley Show; the Hadleigh Show will sport our amazing cakes and plant tent; the volunteers will continue to stimulate and educate the riders and to cap it all, Anglican Water will be driving a large pipe through Shelly and there will be attendant disruption! Exciting.

Mid. February will see our school age riders taking half term off, so have fun and keep well!

Demand on Practice services is exceptionally high at the moment with the resurgence of ‘flu and Covid. This has been further exacerbated by doctors and other personnel also falling prey to the bugs and unable to work. The Practice is doing its very best to keep up with this high seasonal demand. For everyone’s protection masks must be worn inside the building.

Yet another reminder that appointments can always be booked on line. A number of next day appointments are made available after 7pm the night before. To take advantage of this simple, effective booking procedure new users need to show photo ID at reception and request the log in details. A new check in machine has been installed to replace the previous outdated model. Patients are requested to make use of this to help keep the queuing at Reception to a minimum and free for patients not seeing a doctor. Dr Hill retired at the end of December. She will be greatly missed by colleagues and patients.

There is new outside defibrillator near the front door of the Practice. Free training sessions are available at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre for the next two months. For reservation details visit the VisitHadleigh website or look for posters on display in this magazine or throughout the town.

Anyone remember last summer’s heatwaves? Me neither, but there must be some sunlight getting through the clouds, judging by our quirky mascot outside.

A few years ago, a small plastic solar powered Pug was left at our gate. Perhaps a dog lover thought he would bring us more luck than the traditional waving cat. Apparently these Chinese talisman are actually Japanese and not waving but beckoning. The right paw invites good fortune but our Edmond beckons friendship with his left paw, perhaps suggesting true friends are worth more than money?

We are certainly blessed with wonderful people who come in each day to care for the animals awaiting new homes, including dogs like seven year old Buster who cannot see. His sense of space and touch is fantastic but he likes his world to remain static so that he can negotiate it accurately.

Buster enjoys his walks, he knows the exact whereabouts of his dinner - and the treat you are offering him! Slowly build up trust, talk to him as you approach so he is not frightened and a rewarding relationship will develop. Please leave a phone message or email if you would like to meet this special boy, or if you would like to become a volunteer. New adults are always welcome to help with feeding, walking and cleaning the living quarters. All we ask is commitment to one morning per week. There are lots of grateful animals waiting to meet you, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Councils’ new tenancy policy recognises ‘a home is not just a house’

Council tenants across Babergh and Mid Suffolk can look forward to continuing certainty over their homes with the possible adoption of the councils’ new tenancy policy. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ cabinets will meet next week to discuss the adoption of the policy, which supports the councils’ vision to improve the wellbeing of its tenants, supporting the development of family life and thriving communities across the districts. The policy sets out a clear explanation of the range of tenancies that the councils offers and how and they are managed. The policy reinforces the councils’ recognition of and the importance of all residents having a safe and sustainable place to call home, alongside the need for high-quality social and affordable housing.

Babergh’s cabinet member for housing, Cllr Jan Osborne, said: “The adoption of this policy will ensure that we are in line with the requirements of the Housing Regulator and the councils’ aim to be a good landlord and support our communities. “The implementation of secure tenancies is current best practice within the housing sector. It is important that social and affordable homes are managed in a way that is fair and balanced for all residents and this policy supports that.”

The tenancy policy aims to: ·explain how tenancies will be managed ·provide tenants with security of tenure ·recognise tenants’ needs, aspirations and changing lives and provide a service which meets these ·make best use of our limited supply of homes - by enabling and encouraging tenants to move to more suitable accommodation if their home no longer meets their needs

·support our tenants to sustain their tenancies ·tackle breaches of the tenancy proportionately ·deter and tackle tenancy fraud.

The tenancy policy is in line with Government policy and allows the Councils to continue to provide long-term security tenancies. If will formalise the processes in place with no significant changes to our current practice of tenancy management, or the rights of existing or new tenants.

Great News!

The Trustees of The Soper Collection Charity are delighted to announce that a permanent home has now been found for The Soper Collection. The new home is Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby. There will be permanent hanging of some Soper artwork and a major exhibition is scheduled for 24th June - 17th September this year, 2023: ‘The Natural World - The artwork of George, Eileen and Eva Soper.’ At last, after the initial exhibition in 1991, the glorious artwork of the Soper family will be revealed to the public in the entirety of its range. Pannett Art Gallery in Pannett Park is delighted to be the new owner and apart from exhibiting the work regularly they will, in due course, be using the collection educationally at all levels.

George Soper and family visited Whitby in 1911, 1912 and 1913. These visits are recorded in the old Whitby Gazette records. To have found a home with such a connection is indeed satisfactory. This record pins down some of the previously unidentified artwork to Whitby and the surrounding area. The working horse and wildlife artwork of the family is, of course, applicable all over England. It would be good, if possible, for a locally connected study opportunity to be set up. We, the Trustees, invite you to look, wonder, and, if possible, to donate to further exhibition requirements and facilities. Most gratefully received previously donated money is now with Pannett Art Gallery for constructive use there. Please look at websites: www.thesopercollection.org. and www.pannettartgallery.org.

There are many dropdown pages on The Soper Collection website covering the Soper story and the collection content.

We wish you a wonderful experience if you are able to visit Pannett Art Gallery, Pannett Park, Whitby.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice

As the weather has turned colder, I’ve noticed mould and damp in our flat. It’s mainly in our bedroom, including some black mould on the carpet. I’ve been chasing our letting agency, who say they’ll speak to our landlord. I’m really worried about how this might affect our health. Our tenancy agreement isn’t up for eight months, what can I do?

It’s good that you’ve already raised the issue with your letting agency. Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to work out the cause of mould or damp This can make it difficult to work out if your landlord is responsible, unless there’s an obvious cause, like a leaking roof.

There are many causes of damp that properties can get. The most common are rising, penetrating, construction and condensation damp. On our website www.citizensadvice.org.uk there is information that may help you work out what type of damp you have, who is responsible and what you can do. Check your tenancy agreement too for mentions of repairs and damp and reach out to Citizens Advice on anything you’re unsure about.

A landlord will have to act in relation to damp if it makes the property unsafe for someone to live in. This could be for example, if it is making the tenant or a member of their family ill. The landlord will also be responsible if the damp is related to repairs they should have carried out, like if heaters are broken. If the damp has damaged items that the landlord is responsible for, such as carpets and window frames, they’ll likely have to cover the cost of repairs.

One of the most common causes of damp is condensation. To prevent this, it’s important to keep homes well-heated and well-ventilated, but for a lot of people this will be trickier to do given the colder weather and higher heating costs. You may be eligible for help to insulate and heat your home and should visit our website to find out more.

On our website we also have advice on things that can make damp worse and may impact the landlord taking responsibility for repairs. These include drying clothes on heaters or blocking air vents.

If your landlord is responsible for the damp in your property but doesn’t act, there are steps you can take, such as reporting them to the local authority. If you’re in social housing, you might also be able to use the landlord’s formal complaints procedure. There is more information about this on our website. If it reaches the point where you want to get out of a fixed term tenancy agreement early, do speak to an adviser first, as there might be better ways to approach the issue.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

Whilst it is tempting to keep the bike in the shed until the Spring or join a spin class, it can be fun and exhilarating to ride outdoors over the Winter. HCC cyclists will be out and about weather permitting. Here are a few handy tips for winter riding:

1Check the weather. Beware of ice so avoid early mornings and late afternoons if it is forecast.

2Make sure you’ve got a decent windproof jacket and gloves and waterproofs if showers are expected.

3You’ll need a set of lights if you’re out early doors or after 4pm. Don’t buy the cheapest.

4Mudguards are handy if you’re riding in a group.

5There are tyres which are virtually puncture-proof and they are definitely worth the investment.

6Get your bike serviced.

And remember to protect yourself at all times.

Hadleigh CC members participated in races at the UCI World Masters CycloCross Championship 2022 held at the Suffolk Showground in December including our Treasurer Nick Webber and our Juniors, Evie, Aaron, Charlie and Ciaran.

The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Fridays (women).

The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

First hole in one of the year at Stoke by Nayland

2023 was just hours old when Stoke by Nayland saw its first hole in one of the New Year. Playing in the traditional New Year’s Day Scramble, Dan Mills aced the short par3 third hole on the Gainsborough Course. Dan, who lives in Colchester, used a 53 degree gap wedge, pitching the ball directly over the flag where it bounced once and spun back into the holewhat a way to start 2023.

In the Sports Bar after the event Dan rang the bell and shared a bottle of brandy with the members.
