As I sit here right now, I can feel the festival withdrawals setting in. Every part of me wants to go back to Lost Lands and re-experience the last weekend of pure bliss and incredible music. Making its debut

TechnoBeat At Lost Lands With Richard Joseph Branciforte

in Thornville, Ohio, Lost Lands was a bass music fan’s dream. Let’s go through what made it so

amazing and some things that need to change for next year. General organization was on point. The lines to get into the venue were fast and efficient and the free high quality earplugs that were given to each guest were

key in protecting your ears from the incredible high volumes and low frequencies. The two stages that patrons could visit were far enough away that they did not interfere with each other and each one had it’s own vibe to it. The Cave of Souls took you into a giant enclosed and curved tent

with stalagmites and stalactites coming from the floor and ceiling, ancient hieroglyphics being projected on the outside of the tent, with the vibrant and enticing lighting. For a secondary stage, this one was great. The sound quality was awesome and the tent was (usually) big enough to fit everyone to see the artist. As the night went on, though, trying to see your favorite artist at the Cave of Souls was a bit of a hassle and sometimes not worth it if you didn’t arrive 15 minutes before the start of the set. In general the walk between the two stages wasn’t too bad. There was one section where the merchandise was being sold that acted as a bottleneck as the lane narrowed and didn’t allow as many people through. However, once at the Prehistoric Paradox, all of that was quickly forgotten. Excision really outdid himself with the abundance of enormous dinosaurs all around the festival grounds and the main stage. Oh, and don’t for get about the massive pyrotechnic volcanoes on either side of the stage. The Prehistoric Paradox stage was the ultimate experience for a festival stage. And I absolutely have to give a shout out to PK sound. The highs, mids, and lows came through extremely clearly and I couldn’t get over how crisp the subs and bass kicks were. The music was the perfect volume; extremely loud but also somehow giving you the ability to have a conversation with your friend next to you. Looks like I need to get a PK system in my home. One important thing that needs to be assessed for next year is the water situation. There was only one water station inside the venue for the thousands of people and the supply they were pulling from was being overburdened, causing water refill times to reach around five minutes per person. If you planned ahead, this usually wasn’t too big of a problem, though. Now, let’s get to the music. This was a dream lineup if I’ve

ever seen one; every artist performed at their peak. I was able to see artists I had been trying to see for a very long time and also got to see some of my favorite artists perform on the same stage. I thought Sullivan King absolutely killed it with his metal/dubstep mixture of a performance and he had an insane amount of energy. Some other artists that greatly impressed me were Phiso, PhaseOne, Illenium, Midnight T B2B Figure, Cookie Monsta, and of course

Excision and his four sets from that weekend. Each one of his sets kept getting better and better. I, of course, have to give a shout out to my girl Rezz. She blew my mind, just as she always does during a live show. The sounds that come out of the speakers when she goes on stage are jaw dropping and the energy she brings is unparalleled. I made sure that as soon as I got home, I started going through all of the sets I saw and downloading songs nonstop. This was easily one of

the best festivals I’ve ever been to, and one of the best weekends of my life. Thank you so much to Excision and his team for putting this on and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for next year.

David Sedaris

Humorist & Best-Selling Author Returns To Staller Center He’s a good read: The humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris returns to Long Island – his only appearance here on his current tour – on Friday, October 20 at 8 pm at The Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. He’ll read from new and unpublished works, and he’ll take audience questions as well as sign books both before and after the reading. Tickets are $48 at stallercenter.com or at (631) 632-ARTS [2787]. “David Sedaris had a performance at Staller Center in October 2013 to a sold-out house of 1,000 people,” said Alan Inkles, director of The Staller Center. “Audience members pleaded to have him back as soon as possible, and we have honored the request. We are thrilled to be the venue for his only Long Island appearance on his U.S. tour.” Sedaris began a rigorous touring schedule in September, with 54 dates through January 2018. He will have readings at numerous European cities, followed by 40 U.S. readings, and travel to Australia in January. His most recent book was Theft By Finding: Diaries 1977-2002, consisting of selections from the diaries that are the source for Sedaris’s autobiographical essays. For nearly four decades, Sedaris has faithfully kept a diary in which he records his thoughts and observations of the odd and funny events he witnesses. Anyone who has attended a live Sedaris event knows that his diary readings are often among the most joyful parts of the evening. Now, in Theft By Finding, his favorite entries are available in print. The book will be on sale at Staller Center along with other Sedaris favorites. Also just published is Jeffrey Jenkins’s David Sedaris Diaries – A Visual Compendium anl lustrated volume of artwork and images selected from 40 years of diaries. The book begins with a forward by Sedaris. The last few years have been banner ones for rock vocalist Lisa Polizzi and her band. The Ultimate Cult Classic At Patchogue Theatre

Patchogue Theatre is partnering with ZEN Productions and The ZEN Room for the third year for a presentation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday, October 28 at 8 pm. The ZEN Room's live "shadowcast" enhances the experience on Patchogue Theatre’s stage as they act out your favorite scenes with audience participation. Prop bags for the audience will be sold in the lobby for $5 prior to the show. The pre-show reception will begin at 7:30 pm, and will include a Halloween costume contest with giveaways for first, second, and third places, as well as the traditional "virgin sacrifice" before the show. There will be a "meet & greet" with the shadowcast after the show in the Theatre lobby. As if that weren’t enough, Clarkson is joined by members of Earth Wind & Fire on one of the album’s tunes, “Whole Lotta Woman.” The first single, “Love So Soft,” was rushing up the charts as this issue went to press; it’s a unique soul/pop anthem that’s different than anything she’s released before, yet stays in the tenor and tone of her best work to date. Clarkson will also return to NBC next year in her role as coach on the new season of “The Voice,” set to premiere in February. array of #1 Billboard singles and total worldwide sales of more than 25 million albums and 36 million singles. The Texas-born, Nashvillebased singer/songwriter first came to fame in 2002 as the winner of “American Idol’s” inaugural season. Clarkson’s debut single, “A Moment Like This,” followed and quickly went to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, ultimately ranking as the year’s best-selling single in the U.S. Thankful, Clarkson’s 2003 debut album, made its debut atop the SoundScan/Billboard 200 on its way to a two-time platinum certifica-

tion from the RIAA. Clarkson is no doubt one of pop’s top singles artists, with 17 single releases now boasting multi-platinum, platinum, and gold certifications around the world, including such global favorites as “Miss Independent,” “Because Of You,” “Mr. Know It All,” “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” “Heartbeat Song,” and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” the last of which holds the Billboard “Hot 100” record for the biggest chart leap in a single week, from #97 all the way to #1.

In the year of 1970, four young musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles came together to create a new style of music. Exploring the possibilities of progressive, classical, and world influences yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack, and Burleigh Drummond created a new sound that was defined and recognized as Ambrosia. Originally labeled as America’s answer to the progressive invasion of such English acts as Yes and King Crimson, the group quickly proved it was all that and much more, as its albums painted aural landscapes covering the gamut of musical styles

and attracting the collaboration of such cultural icons as Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Alan Parsons. In its brief recording history, Ambrosia garnered five Grammy nominations, five Top 40, heavy airplay, and the respect of the musical community. All this was in addition to sold-out concerts around the world. Today, the band has three of its original members intact, plus the additions of guitarist Doug Jackson on electric guitar, Mary Harris on keyboards and vocals, and lead vocals and acoustic guitar by Ken Stacey.

A typically inept New York Mets maneuver: Rather than being up front about his pending dismissal and allowing manager Terry Collins to enjoy a victory lap during their the team’s final homestand, upper management refused

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

to formally admit that he was toast. Mets GM Sandy Alderson was steadfast in insisting that a statement would be issued only after the season concluded. Dragging things out only created backbiting, which could have been avoided. Suddenly, stories were leaked that Collins ran his players into the ground (particularly closer Jeurys Familia, who missed most of the year with a shoulder injury) by not giving them proper rest. Some anonyTerry mous young players Collins claimed that Collins favored veterans and did not communicate well with them. That kind of cowardice rightfully angered team captain David Wright, who went public with his displeasure at their disloyalty. While it’s patently unfair to blame Collins for the spate of injuries that have happened to the Mets this

season, there may be some veracity to the complaint about how he handled Familia. I remember when the Mets were winning a rare blowout against the Dodgers late in the summer in 2016. I was shocked that Collins had Familia pitch the top of the ninth inning with his team up by a score of 15-2. On the other hand, I can’t understand how any Mets player could have a serious beef with Collins; if a player was struggling, Collins never threw him under the bus; the manager would tell the press: “We’ve got to find a way to get him going.” As far as the charge of favoring veteran players, Collins was certainly guilty – and so is nearly every other manager in history. Veterans tend to have the highest salaries, and obviously Mets’ ownership would have been enraged had the manager not played them. SNY Mets field reporter Steve Gelbs joined Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez in the booth during the Mets’ home finale. Gelbs led a poignant discussion about the stresses that players feel when things aren’t going well such as worrying if they’ll be traded, or worse, sent to the minor leagues. Will such players be able to support their families if they find themselves out of baseball? It’s surprising how infrequently those kind of player concerns are brought up to the public. “Big Papi” Oritz was an honoree at the 2017 Buoniconti Fund Dinner. I asked him if he is in touch with actor Kenan Thompson, who does a spot-on impression of him during occasional “Weekend Update” segments on “Saturday Night Live.” Oritz flashed his usual smile: “Kenan is my man. We text all the time!” He added that he thinks more people know who he is from Thompson’s caricature of him than from his 20 seasons in the majors. Oritz added that he hopes to make an appearance on “SNL” this year. New York Giants offensive tackle Justin Pugh doubled as a pitch man for the newest men’s grooming products from Conair Men at a recent media launch in the East Village. Pugh has one of the best-maintained beards in sports, so he certainly was a smart choice on Conair’s part to be a celebrity endorser. Pugh’s appearance came two days after the Giants were beaten by The Philadelphia Eagles 27-24

in a heartbreaking last second defeat at Lincoln Financial Field. “I’ve never been in a game where my team lost on a 61-yard field goal,” Pugh said philosophically. Ironically, Justin grew up an Eagles fan in Holland, located in Bucks County. I asked him if that has caused any issues over the years: “My family are all now Giants fans, but my friends are still big Eagles fans and they get on me,” he said with a laugh. Last year, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks signed Portland Trailblazers swingman Allen Crabbe to a lucrative contract when Crabbe became a restricted free agent last summer. The Blazers matched the Nets’ offer, and Crabbe remained in Portland. Marks didn’t give up, and in June the Blazers traded Crabbe to the Nets in order to reduce payroll. At the Nets media day, Crabbe seemed thrilled with Marks’ pursuit of him: “It’s great to be wanted!” he laughed. Crabbe will welcome the relative anonymity of playing in the Nets' market: “In Portland I couldn’t go anywhere without being recognized. My teammates and I were treated like rock stars.” How long it will take Carmelo Anthony to regret waiving his no-trade deal with the Knicks to go play in Oklahoma City? The Thunder have a fine team, but OKC is a small market, and a conservative place to boot. The death of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner at age 91 last month brought

out a lot of the old tropes about how men bought it for the articles. While that old bromide always generated a few guffaws, the reality is that Playboy actually did feature outstanding articles – and that extended to sports, where Anson Mount’s college football and NFL previews were always highly anticipated. Mount’s son, also named Anson, is the lead actor in ABC’s new action series, “Marvel’s Inhumans.” RIP, “Hef.”

Irascible Aussie: This stand-up comedian is truly “Legit” — with numerous Netflix specials under his belt, including his latest Freedumb, his own weekly series on Comedy Central, and years of experience performing live at venues and comedy festivals, Jim Jefferies knows how to work an audience until they’re rolling in the aisles. The comedy superstar will headline on Saturday, October 28 for two shows, 7 and 9:30 pm, at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. For more information and tickets: (631) 288-1500 and whbpac.org. This show is for mature audiences (no one under 18). Jefferies has proven to be one of the most prolific comedians working today; he’s never off the road for long. This stop is part of his “The Unusual Punishment Tour,” which means his fans can expect the same kind of non-filtered humor that’s made him one of top standups on the planet at this writing. Comedy Central has extended the first season of the new late night series “The Jim Jefferies Show” and ordered 10 additional episodes. The series features the Australian comedian’s unapologetic, honest, and international approach to culture and politics. New episodes began in September for the show, which follows Tosh.0 in a highlight for the network. “I’m very grateful to Comedy Central for making our relationship more official,” said Jefferies. “Like all my relationships, I look forward to a few more months with Comedy Central before it starts crying outside of a bar at 2 am. Jim Jeffries Or spray paints ‘liar’ on the side of my car.” Each week, Jefferies tackles the week’s top stories from behind his desk and travels the globe to far-off locations to provide an eye-opening look at hypocrisy around the world. Featuring interviews, international field pieces, and man on the ground investigations, Jefferies covers the most controversial issues, all through the lens of his distinctive brand of comedy. “The Jim Jefferies Show” ranks as the #1 new comedy in 2017 among men 18-34 among all ad-supported cable in prime time, and has had a great start on the digital front as one of Comedy Central’s most-viewed new series on its owned and operated platforms across the past two years. Jefferies has also found critical success as an actor, where he played the role of “Charlie” in the feature film And Punching the Clown, that premiered at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival and he created, wrote, produced and starred in the critically acclaimed series “Legit,” which ran for two seasons on FX. Continue The Jim Jefferies Show experience on Comedy Central’s Snapchat Discover channel, with original content on Tuesdays.

Blues You Can Use: Our monthly look at new blues albums, either available now or are James soon to be: Armstrong Texas' Catfood Records (love that label name) will release James Armstrong's Blues Been Good To Me on October 20. Armstrong, whose songwriting is as strong as his sterling guitar playing, is a veteran of the genre recording since the 1960s, yet: “I’m extremely happy with the results of the recording,” he said. “Blues Been Good to Me is the most exciting recording I’ve done in years” … The legendary Nighthawks are back on the boards, with its summer release, All You Gotto Do, rising up the blues charts … Also back on October 20 is the longtime lead vocalist of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson, whose new Blues & Boogie Vol. 1 on the Severn label is a full-scale

concept for Alive! '75 – A Tribute to Kiss appeared spontaneously on the evening of October 5, 2013, one might argue that it has roots dating back 35 years and has been simmering quietly for all that time. “Back in 1979, a few of our founding members originally built what may have been the first ever ‘Kiss-a-mania’ tribute and began performing in local venues in the Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge sections of Brooklyn,” wrote the band. “After a few years of modest success (and graduation from high school), the group disbanded to individually pursue various alternate musical interests, though they remained

very close over the years ... But it was that one night on October 5, 2013, while Anthony and his wife were out enjoying a Doors tribute band performance when the idea struck — it was good music, but Anthony felt much else was missing. A vision for much more was forming in his head ... ‘Where is the light show?’ ‘Why not have a realistic stage set?’ ‘What about the time period?’” Soon, the band started in earnest, and now is one of the region’s top-grossing tribute acts. Judas Priestess ranks as the world’s only all-woman tribute to Judas Priest. Formed in 2009, this striking group of leather and chainclad New York-based based women rockers has created a worldwide reputation, complete with rave reviews from music critics and fans, and has the blessing of Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford. Popular from their many area appearances, Priestess truly has become a national phenomenon, performing all over the country and earning press on TV, magazines, and one high-profile metal websites. We can attest: Priestiess is real Priest while still being feminine and reverential.

The song tells the story of a trick-or-treater who gets caught up seeing the Frankenstein monster everywhere she looks. “Halloween has always been a favorite holiday of mine, and I had such fun co-starring with Butch Patrick in the music video for a song called ‘It’s Only Halloween.’ I decided to create a few of my own; I loved playing a witch in ‘Rapping With The Witch’ in 2015, and this year I get a chance to do a song from the viewpoint of a trick-ortreater.“ The new song was produced for the label Shimmy Cat Records and distributed through CDBaby, and is available at iTunes, Spotify, CDBaby, and Amazon.

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

The Chelsea Takami Band Stunning New Original Music

Who: The Long Islandbased Chelsea Takami and her band haven’t been on the scene long, but they’re making a huge splash in just a matter of months. Already, she has performed at such top area venues as The Lounge At The Space Theater in Westbury and K.J. Farrell’s in Bellmore. The musicians have been hard at work with the recording of a debut album. The Artist & Her Sound: From her official bio: “The emergence of Chelsea Takami’s music could not have come at a better time. With today’s world in constant flux, we need a message of honesty; something that will stand the test of time within the months and years to follow. “Takami is the artist who delivers truth and meaning through her music with natural rhythm, enticing melodies, great charisma, and an open heart. She delivers real, well-crafted stories that hint at a burgeoning talent; one which will undoubtedly mature and sweeten with time. “As the daughter to world-renowned Shotokan Master Sensei Toyotaro Miyazaki, Chelsea was often placed under expectation that she would one day follow in her father’s footsteps. It had come as somewhat of a shock to Master Miyazaki when his only daughter chose to pursue life of music, but it turns out that the two worlds aren’t as far apart as one would think.” “I believe I carry my father’s spirit, focus, ambition, and love of performance,” said Takami. “I think I do honor his legacy; but it just happens to manifest into a different art form.” “Chelsea is currently raising money via indiegogo.com to produce her first EP at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove. She and the team are working tirelessly to create a quality project that will far exceed all expectations. And with this artist already building a name for herself, those expectations are high. To date, Takami and the community as a team have raised over $10,000. The project is still accepting backers and offering in return a chance to connect on a personal level with this rising star as well as become a part of this dynamic project. For more information, visit igg.me/at/TakamiMusic. “Though Takami has only recently joined the live music scene as a fulltimer, she has wasted no time in creating her own niche, and has already been featured on many internet radio shows, festivals, and television. Almost any given night brings an opportunity to see Takami perform live, and a full schedule of her shows can be found at ChelseaTakami.com/shows.” Takami can also be found on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as on YouTube.

Music As A Target: The horrible news about the shooting attack at the Route 91 Harvest Country Festival in Las Vegas led me to this conclusion: Popular culture, and popular music in particular, appears to be in the cross hairs, as the saying goes. The list is maddening: The Pulse gay dance club in Florida; the rock concert at The Bataclan Club in France; the Ariana Grande stadium show in the UK; and now this packed country music festival in Vegas. Popular music has been a powerful weapon for cultural

gotten over my “who had the name Heartbreakers first” grudge (Johnny Thunders did). Rest in peace, Tom Petty. Hall Of ... What, Exactly? It's time for my early rant regarding The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame nominees. Chaka Khan and Nina Simone? Really? Rock & roll? Make no mistake, both ladies are extremely talented and their bodies of recorded works are breathtaking, but they really need to change the name of this "Hall" because it now has gone beyond the point of ridiculousness. Kate Bush is a fine performer, but I find there to be nothing “rock & roll” about her; the selections seem to become

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers change in the world – more powerful than any political speech – and apparently has made some powerful enemies in the process. We stand with those that we have lost, and will continue to support live music everywhere – now more than ever. Another Loss: It simply continues to unnerve me as this progression of deaths in rock and pop continues unabated with almost every Rhythm Tracking that I submit. The grim reality is that time is on the march, and the generation of pop and rock's greatest era is aging and dying – something that none of us of that generation really want to look into the eye of, but I'm looking. Tom Petty is one of the most talented and loved of his generation, and even his death was a cause ofcontroversy as some news outlets prematurely reported his passing before it actually happened. I sat and listened to the Hard Promises album on a clean vinyl pressing, turntable spinning like it was 1980, and his talent and style made itself evident once again. I have even

whatever Jann Wenner and Seymour Stein decide them to be. Why not add more disco to the list while you're at it, boys? I once again implore everyone to write in a vote for The MC5, who are the only ones truly worthy to be voted in by real rock fans; also still left standing outside in the rain are the groundbreakers The New York Dolls, T.Rex, Mott The Hoople, the first ever openly trans rocker

Wayne/Jayne County; and Motown's first #1 singles group, The Marvelettes, who were a source of inspiration to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Shame on the R&RHOF!
