Paper Bag Players Celebrate At Mulcahy’s

For the 45th year THE PAPER BAG will take place on Tuesday June 25th at Mulcahy’s from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Billed as “The World’s Only 70 Piece Rock Band” (probably around 85 this year), over 50 songs are played each year in what can be described as a wonderful “organized chaos”. There are several ORIGINAL members in the band from Day 1, with over 20 who have been involved for more than 30 years. To be specific, the LAST Tuesday in June.

Started in 1979 by Mike Guido in upstate Whitehall NY, the show relocated to LI gaining more members each year. Playing places such as The Silver Dollar, The Lion’s Cage, Rumrunner’s, Salty Dog, Sundance, SPIT, and Paradise, the Paper Bag moved to Mulcahy’s in 1995 where it has been ever since. People who have moved away plan their vacation back to LI for the last week in June to attend. Musicians from many states and Canada travel here to perform with their Paper Bag Family.

Each year, The Paper Bag has a theme, and songs are chosen around it. “The Money Bag” (2012) featured “She Works Hard for the Money”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “You Better You Bet”, “Eat the Rich”. In 2006, “The School Bag” setlist contained “Teach Your Children”, “Smokin’ in the Boy’s Room”, “See You in September”, “Magic Bus”, “My Old School”. For 2024 it’s “The Glad Bag”. You figured it out.

Everything starts in March with the Executive Board Meetings. A theme is chosen and setlist to go with it. The Section Leaders reach out to the Players/Sing-

ers and the process begins. Many phone calls and emails are traded. Charts are written and shared. “Who has what solo” and harmonies are decided. “Special Events” during the show are planned. Each member of the Band and Paper Bag Family (200+ folks) chose a name for the back of their TShirt. Rehearsal? As a whole, it’s for a few hours the night before and a few the night of the show. Is every song rehearsed? Well, no, and that’s what adds to the fun.

While the numbers change (remember, musicians lead complicated lives), expect at least 14 Guitarists, 8 Horns, 5 Keyboards, 6 Bass Players, 14 Drummers/Percussionists, 25 Vocalists... and various other devices of music and sound. If a Violin is needed, they get one. If a Triangle is needed, they get one. In addition, the year marks the 15th year of participation for the NCPD Pipe & Drum Band. This is the TOTAL Entertainment Package.

Mr. Guido kicks-off the music exactly at 8PM. You have never seen another show like this. Some say it shouldn’t even work … but it does … year after year. It’s planned to work, and everyone on that stage is on the same page. The question asked often is “why on a Tuesday??”. The answer is easy: Tuesday is musician’s night off.

Browse The Paper Bag website to see it’s full History, Master Song List (about 2000 songs now!), the Players, AND TO BUY TICKETS (save money buying online!). www.paperbagmusic.com

The most important suggestion is (and it’s printed on the ticket) “We strongly urge you to take the next day off”.

SPORTS BEAT

Injuries marred the Mets’ 2023 season, and all indications are 2024 will not be much better for Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s favorite MLB team. Their ace pitcher, Kodai Senga, reported to spring training with a dead arm, and probably will not get on the mound at Citi Field until June at the earliest. If that were not bad enough, two of their better relief pitchers, Drew Smith, and Brooks Raley, went on the injured list for various arm ailments.

The worst injury news, however, was the loss of catcher Francisco Alvarez, who lost his footing rounding first base and cushioned his fall with his hand, resulting in a broken thumb which required surgery in a game against the Dodgers in LA last month. He will be out until late next month. This was the same injury which prematurely ended Brett Baty’s 2022 rookie season.

It is safe to say, the 1966 Rolling Stones’ tongue-in-cheek misogynistic classic, “Under My Thumb,” will not be played over the Citi Field PA system anytime soon.

The major storyline for the Mets this year will be the future of first baseman Pete Alonso who will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 campaign. My guess is there will be a meeting of the minds between his agent, Scott Boras, and team CEO Steve Cohen. Alonso has made it clear he likes

being a Met, and the perks which come with it, such as appearing in television commercials for Citi Cards, Car Shield, and BMW. He is a good actor, and he told me he realizes playing in the nation’s largest market helps him get those gigs. It is to be seen whether he will be the face of a cologne the way Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is for Ralph Lauren’s Polo 67.

One of the brightest Mets prospects, Luisangel Acuna, who was acquired last July in the Max

Scherzer trade from the Texas Rangers, is getting playing time in centerfield for the Syracuse Mets. He has spent his minor league career as an infielder, but if he can be a credible outfielder that will make him extremely valuable. Expect him to make an appearance in Queens before the season’s end.

2024 has been a glorious year for women’s hoops. The Women’s NCAA Tournament championship game garnered higher ratings than its longestablished men’s counterpart for the first time. Much of the credit for that goes to University of Iowa sharpshooting guard Caitlin Clark, and to the undefeated University of South Carolina.

Caitlin Clark was the main reason the press room was packed for the WNBA Draft held last month at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Clark spoke to the media for 15 minutes after being chosen by the Indiana Fever who had the first pick. Like Derek Jeter, she said a lot without saying anything memorable.

Stanford University power forward Cameron Brink, who resembles a young Julie Newmar, was selected right after Clark by the Los Angeles Sparks. Unlike Clark, Cameron Brink was not afraid to be spontaneous and engaging. Brink grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, which is the corporate

Pete Alonso

home of Nike. Despite that, Brink signed an endorsement deal with New Balance. “Both of my parents worked for Nike for 25 years. However, New Balance decided to make me their first women’s basketball and I could not turn them down,” she told me. My take is Brink did not want to play second fiddle to Caitlin Clark who I rumored to have received an eightfigure deal from Nike.

It will be interesting to see how the NBA television playoff ratings shake out without the presence of two of its biggest stars, LeBron James and Steph Curry, whose teams were eliminated in the first round.

The Jets’ selection of Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fanashu in the first round of the NFL Draft was good news for QB Aaron Rodgers, and even better news for tight end, and Lindenhurst native, Jeremy Ruckert. Most mock drafts had Gang Green selecting University of Georgia tight end Brock Bowers with the pick. Bowers was taken three picks later by the Las Vegas Raiders.

David Berson’s first job as CBS Sports president, succeeding the retiring Sean McManus, was a dirty one, as he jettisoned both Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason from

“The NFL Today” panel. He made a good selection however in having former NFL QB Matt Ryan join that show.

Ryan was a game analyst for CBS last year. He made a humorous observation about a former Jets passer. “Zach Wilson holds on to the football longer than it takes to read the menu at Cheesecake Factory!”

Ann Liguori was an original air personality on WFAN, and for many years you could hear her reports on golf and tennis on the station. “What’s the story, Ann Liguori?” was a frequently run promo the station used for her. The East End resident is still active in the media and has authored a book about her conversations over the years with pros on both the PGA and LPGA Tour titled “Life on the Green” (Hatherleigh Books).

Few people have the Rolodex Ann Liguori does, and her conversations with Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Nancy Lopez, and so many others are fascinating. On a serious note, Player recalls the abuse fellow pro, Charlie Sifford, received at many tournaments in the 1950s and early 1960s because of the color of his skin.

On a far lighter note, Nancy Lopez recalls the time she met Tom Selleck at a Lionel Richie concert.

Mother’s Day may have passed, but it is not too late to pick up a copy of veteran boxing writer Thomas Hauser’s memoir about his mom, aptly titled “My Mother and Me” (Admission Press). His mom worked at the New Yorker at a time few women were in the business or media worlds. Hauser makes her sound like a real-life version of Beatrice Arthur’s “Maude” which fans of the Norman Lear 1970s CBS comedy will fondly remember

WILLIAMS JR. AT HARD ROCK

Hank Williams Jr. takes the stage at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on Friday, July 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale at HardRockHotelAtlanticCity.com, Ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000.

In 2022 Hank Jr. continued to redefine the boundaries of rock and country music with the genre-crossing, chart-topping release of his most recent album, Rich White Honky Blues. Debuting at No. 1 on the Current Country, Americana/ Folk and Blues Albums charts, the project was a successful collaboration between Williams and GRAMMY-winning Producer, Dan Auerbach. The 12-song-set was recorded live, reprising classics from Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, R.L. Burnside, Muddy Waters, and more, delivering reinvigorated classic blues sounds infused with Williams’ signature rock and country flavor.

MOHEGAN

SUN SHOW

Cheap Trick announced their 2024 concert dates including a show inside Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, August 4th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com. Subject to availability, fans of the Rock legends can purchase tickets at the Mohegan Sun Box Office starting on Saturday, April 13th. Cheap Trick is an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe since 1974 for their instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of Pop Rock ‘n’ Roll. The band – Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and Daxx Nielsen (drums) – are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from “He’s A Whore,” “California Man” and “Dream Police” to “Surrender” and “I Want You To Want Me.”

2016 saw Cheap Trick’s long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cheap Trick closed the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with a show-stealing performance that prompted Rolling Stone to rave, “Their smoking three-song set (was) played to perfection, with Zander hitting all the notes he hit at Budokan back in 1978.”

JOHN FOGERTY’S CELEBRATION TOUR

John Fogerty continues his Celebration Tour this summer including a stop at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, June 16th at 7:00 p.m. Joining in the party as special guests are fellow ‘bad to the bone’ music icons, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, and Rock band, Hearty Har.

Tickets are on sale Friday, March 15th at 10:00 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com. Rock fans can purchase tickets at the Mohegan Sun Box Office subject to availability.

As founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty’s career spans 50 years and he is hailed as one of the most influential musicians in Rock history. As the writer, singer and producer of numerous classic hits including “Born on the Bayou”, “Green River”, “Proud Mary”, and “Bad Moon Rising”, Fogerty is a Grammy winner who has been honored as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists, 100 Greatest Songwriters, and 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone.

In December, 1973 at The University of Delaware’s Lane Hall, a guitarist, a drummer, and their rhythm guitarist set up on the small bandstand. Though the three-piece band had barely rehearsed, guitarist George Thorogood and drummer Jeff Simon had been bashing out covers of songs they loved. Five decades, 15 million albums and more than 8,000 performances later, few bands can still rock the house like George Thorogood.

Led by brothers Shane Fogerty (guitar/vocals) and Tyler Fogerty (guitar/ vocals), the Los Angeles Rock band Hearty Har formed in 2012 and quickly became known for their exciting and raucous live shows.

Grunge Rockers Samsara Set to Skillfully Wander The Karmic Wonderland this Summer with Big Gigs Throughout the Northeast

Fast emerging hard renegades SAMSARA are primed to take over the northeast region this summer, with music and video releases plus huge performances scheduled throughout the NY, NJ, and MA areas - including shows at The Porch in Boston, Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn NYC and a return to the Great South Bay Music Festival on their homebase Long Island, NY in July.

The music video for their song “In Too Deep” drops on 5/23/24, and their next upcoming single, “Alive”, is set to be released on 6/20/24. Comprised of local New Yorkers from Queens and Long Island who base their time partly out of Boston, MA : Dylan Trif, (Lead Vocals), Charlie LoMonaco, (Guitar/ Background Vocals), John Devito, (Bass), Ben Bustamante, (Drums/ Background Vocals), and Brendan Sandhovel, (Guitar) - SAMSARA draws their influence from several styles including grunge, funk, metal, and alternative.

SAMSARA’s “alt sound” weaves in grunge with today’s modern rock. The band has received praise from professionals within the music community. In September of 2021, they came in 2nd place at the Tarrytown Music Hall’s “Rock The Hall”. Their music has received airplay on SiriusXM’s Channel 21, as well as different college radio broadcasts and local radio stations.

SAMSARA has played some of the most notorious rock venues in the tri-state area, a handful of regional music festivals and street fairs, and has worked with several seasoned professionals in the music industry. They have recorded extensively at Shelter Island Studios with Producer Steve Adobbo and with the iconic Gordon Raphael.

On Saturday July 27th at 5pm, join SAMSARA, The Kindergarten, Set Theory, Ryan Walsfich, Izzy Potter and more for a very special benefit concert fundraiser to support Ronald McDonald House at Nostalgia Bar in Bethpage, NY.

TECHNOBEAT

This year has already been shaping up to be a great festival year and it’s only the beginning. As we move into the middle part of this year, there will be dozens of festivals vying for your attention. Be wise with your choices and think about what it is you really want out of a festival experience. I recently attended two very different festivals, both unique and inspiring in their own way.

First up was a yearly endeavor for me: South by Southwest in Austin, TX. SXSW brings together every major aspect of our lives and culture and puts it together in a week long experience bringing you keynotes, panels, concerts, and “activations” from everything including music, health, tech, government, theater, movies, television, gaming, comedy, and so much more. It truly is a week packed with nonstop events to check out and experience and I got to see a little of everything this past year.

Audible, a subscription platform to listen to audiobooks and podcasts, set up an entire carnival this year right in the downtown area of Austin. There were your classic carnival games, foods, and even a full-sized Ferris Wheel to soar up high into the skies of the city. Upon playing all the games, you could turn in a card to get free swag. If that wasn’t enough, on their opening night, they had a DJ performance from The Knocks to ring in their installation. It felt like a unique and clever way to engage consumers with their brand and make everyone feel like a kid again.

Another spot I found myself continuing

types of Latin beats throughout the night and keeping the party going. There was a giant wall where people could sign with a painting of various areas of Costa Rica on it as well as plenty of Costa Rica branded swag being thrown out left and right. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but the energy I felt there was incredibly natural and fun and it got me even more excited to head down to Costa Rica in the future.

One of the best acts I saw during SXSW was Mel Bryant & the Mercy Makers, an indie rock group hailing from Nashville. They brought the energy like is only possible during SXSW! Lead singer Mel Bryant has a powerhouse of a voice that’s able to hit notes all over the place and bring the audience into the music with her. Her unique voice mixed with topical, vulnerable, and relatable lyrics and themes allows everyone to feel like they were a part of the journey to lead to the song being made. Add on top of that killer guitar riffs, fun and captivating drum parts, and an overall energy that says “Fuck You” to the establishment, this band is not one to be missed. They are on the up and up and for good reason. Now, this show was a special one for me as it combined two turntable masters together in one spot. I got to check out Skratch Bastid’s BBQ at the Austin Garden section of Inn Cahoots on the east side and boy was this one for the books. With opening performances from some of the best DJs to ever do it, this BBQ combined classics with a new twist to them and plenty of scratching on the decks. I was initially graced with a performance by Statik Selekta, who is no stranger to bringing the heavy heat to the decks. This man kept the flow moving, and also the crowd, for the entirety of the set bringing style and technique that most of of us only dream of having. Once he closed out his set, it was time for a rare backto-back performance between Skratch Bastid and DJ Jazzy Jeff! These two went for almost 2 hours and hit us with nonstop banger after banger, switching off who was playing and adding a bit of swag to each others’ performance until the sun set and all had left. Everything about this event was perfect and I’m so glad I got to be a part of this experience.

After the dust from SXSW settled, next up on my radar was the Texas Eclipse music festival. Unlike many other festivals, this was a one-time event put on in the hill country of central Texas to align with the total solar eclipse that took place on April 8. This festival was a massive undertaking for many reasons and the team behind it managed to pull it off great given the deck of cards they were dealt. For a first year festival operating on a very diverse and difficult landscape with a massive lineup over 4 days, this was by far one of the most exciting events I had been to. The space was massive with a nonstop plethora of activities to do and places to see. You could hop on over to Quarry Lake and take a dip in the water to cool off from the hot Texas sun. Or maybe you were feeling a bit nerdy and wanted to head to Space Camp and learn a little about the world and the universe out there. Throughout the weekend there were scientists, astronauts, engineers, and public figures all giving talks about what lies beyond Earth. There was yoga and mindfulness sessions to keep your mind at easy and restore your energy after a long day of dancing and moving. This event kept you entertained all weekend long and if you wanted to stay up every day for 24 hours for the whole weekend, there would be almost no time where there wouldn’t be anything to do.

was the

House,

an outdoor plaza area and serving free food and drinks and really giving a taste of what those “Pura Vida” vibes are all about. The area was transformed into a green light and rainforest themed area with DJs spinning all

In terms of the actual stage setup and music, they blew it out of the water. They had a little bit of everything for everybody including house, bass, jam bands, trance, techno, funk, and literally everything in between encompassed within electronic music. The Eclipse Stage was where the magic really happened. This is where the likes of Boogie T, Subtronics, Zeds Dead, Tipper, and Of The Trees got to throw down all of the filth. The stage was massive and the lighting design was on point. One of the highlights of the weekend for me was the drone

show that took place leading into Of The Trees’ set. There was ambient background music that began. And then, all of a sudden, at least 1000 drones flew up from behind the trees and started making intricate designs. We saw a spaceship forming and opening up, illuminating the sky with rainbow colors. We even saw an artistic rendition of the solar eclipse, all done with drones. I’ve never seen a show like that and I know I was in awe of what I was watching; and

so was everyone else in the crowd. It was a truly special moment where everyone was stopped and staring at the beauty in the sky.

Another spot I think this festival hit just right is what I’ll call the “immersion” factor. During my entire stay, I truly felt like I was in a different world, a different planet. All of the art installations really transported the audience to a new and exciting place. Watching artists paint and provide in real time was an immersive experience and getting to see the creativity blossom in front of my eyes allowed me to detach from my normal day to day. The vibes were incredible and I couldn’t be happier with what I got to experience.

Although the last day was cancelled due to impending storms, I feel that it worked out for the best. Everyone was able to get out safely and I ended up watching the solar eclipse, such a unique and special moment, at my campsite with all these special people in my life. A solar eclipse is a moment people talk about but it’s hard to really describe how beautiful it is and the emotions it invokes. It was the icing on the cake to an amazing weekend.

I’m so glad I’ve gotten to share these experiences with you and I hope you find a festival that suits your needs and desires and that you get to attend all of these amazing events coming up this year. If you have anything you’d like to reach out to me about, drop me a line at richiegtechno@gmail.com. Until then, keep raging my friends!

WHEELS & DEALS

MILES TO DAYTON 20 YEARS

Miles to Dayton celebrates 20 years of creating and performing original music this year. To commemorate the occasion, they will present four special concerts throughout this year, where they perform one of their four original albums in its entirety.

First up is their first album, released back in 2004, entitled “A Long Way Back”. A “sad song” collection of tunes for sure, yet with so many glimmers of hope and light. It’s been fun and equally emotionally challenging to go back and listen/work on these tunes. Back in the day, you could find them performing these tunes of beautiful yet tragic woe at various coffee shops all over Long Island. “Eastenders” in Riverhead and “Cool Beans” in St. James come to mind. We could not think of a better venue for this first “m2d 20 years” performance than the newly minted“ People’s Pub”in Bayport,. This concert featured the m2d family band with special

against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.

FOREIGNER’S FAREWELL TOUR

“I Want To Know What Love Is”, “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” and more Top 10 hits than Journey. FOREIGNER, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band behind these iconic songs, announced the next leg of their farewell tour this fall, with special guests Loverboy and Lita Ford on select dates.

After one last show with Styx and John Waite in Memphis on September 20, the tour is set to continue on September 23th, at West Virginia’s Charleston Civic Center. FOREIGNER will be joined by LOVERBOY, one of the 80’s biggest hitmakers, and LITA FORD, the queen of rock and heavy metal. The spectacular shows will thrill audiences with stellar performances of more than 20

combined chart-topping songs. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.com or Foreigneronline.com.

DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL FALL TOUR

Dashboard Confessional announced their 2024 Fall tour featuring special guests BOYS LIKE GIRLS and Taylor Acorn. Produced by Live Nation, the 28city tour kicks off on September 10 at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ, making stops across the U.S. in New York, Los Angeles, Houston and more before wrapping up in Irving, TX, at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory on October 27.

With its poignant lyrics and haunting melodies, this track delicately balances themes of love and conflict, offering listeners a deeply resonant experience. Its multifaceted nature allows it to seamlessly transition between being a soulful companion for solitary introspection and a vibrant anthem that unites diverse audiences in moments of reflection and celebration.

while Castillo’s skillful mixing ensures that every detail shines through, creating a truly immersive listening experience.

There are several upcoming releases in the pipeline. The band will be releasing a number of singles in the coming months, followed by a highly anticipated full album release, “Misfit Memoirs,” in mid-2024. After over 25 years, the band is entitled to its “memoirs.” The album’s theme will be about looking back and understanding who you are, and the regret and hard lessons learned along the way. The first single, released March 4th was “Curse,” a song telling the true-to-life story of a family and the rejection by parents of their child for being different by way of a dialogue between the parents and child. Future singles will include “Once Upon a Time,” and “Slip Away.”

Additionally, this is truly an album by UniversalDice. Besides performing the songs, it was written, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered by the band. Even the cover art, lyric videos and just about anything else you might think of were handled/ created by band members. For more info: www. universaldice.com

COUNTRY

TANYA TUCKER’S TEQUILA CANTINA

Country Music Hall of Fame member and GRAMMY Award-winning artist Tanya Tucker got into “Some Kind of Trouble” at the grand opening of Tanya Tucker’s Tequila Cantina at Nudie’s Honky Tonk on lower Broadway, Nashville. In true Tanya style, the legendary artist, dressed in a custom Double D Ranch periwinkle suit embellished with rhinestones, galloped down the infamous Broadway Street on the back of a beautiful black Friesian stallion named Lauw that was adorned with fresh flowers. Thousands watched on either side of Broadway to witness the historic ride of Tanya Tucker from Fifth Avenue to the front door of Nudie’s Honky Tonk.

The high-spirited grand opening provided an exclusive, advance look at the second floor of Nudie’s that has been transformed into a lively cantina-style bar, reflecting the spirit and charisma of Tanya Tucker herself. The immersive experience captures Tanya’s unique personality and love for fun. Patrons are surrounded by a number of Tucker’s most iconic costumes and memorabilia from her illustrious career.

Tanya Tucker’s Tequila Cantina is now open at Nudie’s Honky Tonk located at 409 Broadway, Nashville from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m. daily. The kitchen closes at 10:00 p.m

WONDER WOMEN OF COUNTRY

Kelly Willis, Melissa Carper, and Brennen Leigh, who have joined forces as power trio Wonder Women of Country, have released a new single, “Won’t Be Worried Long.” The track is the latest from their EP, Wonder Women of Country: Willis, Carper, Leigh, released on March 15th. “Brennen and I got together back in 2019 to write a song about our love for old country music,” says Carper of the song. “When we first met each other, in 2009, we realized we shared a lot of the same influences such as Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and the Carter Family. I think we both tend to think that the old county music is still the best music in existence and what we prefer to listen to just any time but especially when going through hard times.”

Their six-song EP, Wonder Women of Country: Willis, Carper, Leigh, was recorded at Bismeaux on the Hill in Austin, TX in December of 2023. The EP features two songs by each artist, including a couple of Carper/Leigh cowrites, and a reimagined version of John Prine’s “I Have Met My Love Today.” Each harmony-laden track captures the magic these three create night after night on the road.

TOBY KEITH JOINS HALL OF FAME

Toby Keith, John Anderson, and guitarist James Burton are joining the Country Music Hall of Fame. Election to the Country Music Hall of Fame is country music’s highest honor, and new members are elected annually by an anonymous panel of industry leaders chosen by the Country Music Association (CMA). Congratulations to the new members-elect who will be inducted during this year’s Medallion Ceremony on October 20.

Few artists have had as big of a career as Toby Keith. Outspoken and self-confident, Keith knew what he had, even when others didn’t recognize it. Every time someone undervalued him or sold him short, he turned the slight into motivation and creative fuel for a career that ranks with Country’s greatest.

JAZZ & BLUES

COREA & FLECK FINAL DUO PROJECT

I know it sounds unlikely. But it really happened. Once upon a time, I played banjo in a duo with Chick Corea.”– Béla

When the 18-time Grammy Award-winning banjoist speaks of his years-long collaboration with the late pianist Chick Corea, he can sound like a bashful student musician, still obviously in awe of the jazz titan whose impact transformed him as a teenager in the ’70s. Their new and final duo album Remembrance is out now, and serves as a moving final document of the profound creative and personal rapport that Fleck and Corea first showcased at album length with 2007’s Latin Grammy-winning The Enchantment. It’s also a crucial addendum to Corea’s legacy, featuring three previously unreleased Corea compositions as well as five short free improvisations, or impromptus, that Fleck has infused with written music. Remembrance is available on LP, CD and all streaming platforms. Recorded live in concert, during the duo’s final tour dates in 2019, and via traded sound files, Remembrance runs the stylistic gamut — from Corea’s additional unreleased tunes “Enut Nital” (or “Latin Tune”, spelled backwards), and his harmonic wonderland “Continuance,” an older work that resurfaced in the duo’s setlist, to new Fleck compositions, like the ebullient “Juno,” through clairvoyant interpretations of Thelonious Monk and Scarlatti, to challenging exercises, like Fleck’s “Small Potatoes,” that evoke Corea’s unsung work in the jazz avant-garde.

Quickly transferring to Broadway from its sold-out engagement at the Park Avenue Armory, “Illinoise,” is a unique theater experience – neither a traditional musical or play. Choreographer/director Justin Peck (Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury have created a unique dialogue-free dance and sung work adapted from Sufjan Stevens’ popular 2005 album. Twelve astonishing dancing actors gather around a campfire and enact tales from their characters’ journals while separately three extraordinary vocalists sing Stevens’s haunting and rousing songs. Peck describes “Illinoise” as a “catharsis of opening up to the community around oneself.” (St. James Theatre) https:// illinoiseonstage.com/

Rachel McAdams brings star wattage to her Broadway debut in the Broadway premiere of Amy Herzog’s 2017 moving play “Mary Jane” in which she plays a single mother whose life revolves around caring for her critically ill two-year-old son and her sacrifices to keep him alive. McAdams has said, “This play isn’t just about taking care of a child. It’s about taking care of each other.” And under Anne Kauffman’s direction, April Matthis, Brenda Wehle, Susan Pourfar and Lily Santiago play the eight women who offer a support system and community for Mary Jane. Award-winner Jessica Lange returns to Broadway in “Mother Play, A Play in Five Evictions,” the new semiautobiographical play by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel (“How I Learned to Drive”). Beginning in 1962 outside of D.C., the work chronicles how a bitter and disillusioned mother and her then teenage children (played by Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger) survive and endure a changing world over the course of 40 years and learn to accept the past. In his Broadway debut Steve Carell headlines Lincoln Center Theater’s starry “Uncle Vanya” portraying the title character who, along with his niece (Alison Pill), toils at their family farm to provide an income for his entitled brother-in-law (Alfred Molina). His brother-in-law’s visit with his beautiful young wife (Anika Noni Rose) upends their lives as well as that of the neighboring doctor (William Jackson Harper). By using contemporary language and setting it in the near present, playwright Heidi Schreck (“What the Constitution Means to Me”) has adapted and updated Chekhov’s haunting classic about unfulfilled lives, regrets and unrequited loves. (Vivian Beaumont Theatre) https://www.lct. org/shows/uncle-vanya/ Michael Stuhlbarg chews up the scenery in his fiery performance as Russian math prodigy, billionaire and business oligarch Boris Berezovsky in playwright Peter Morgan’s (“The Queen,” “The Crown,” “Frost/Nixon”) latest history-based drama “Patriots.” Morgan pits the exuberant power-hungry Berezovsky against the Frankenstein monster this kingmaker has created when his puppet, Vladimir Putin (Olivier Award-winner Will Keen), a lowlevel deputy mayor and former KGB functionary, morphs into an autocratic dictator. As Putin’s absolute power rises, Berezovsky is stripped of his money and power, his security chief (Alex Hurt) is poisoned and his business partner (Luke Thallon) turns on him. Rupert Goold directs. SARAH GAYLE MEECH ANNOUNCES NEW LP

This month, Meech’s friend, the late Mojo Nixon, gave the song its world radio premiere on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country. “‘Easin’ On’ is about freedom,” Meech explains. “Leaving the past in the rear view.
