Dirty Grandpa: ‘The Benny Hill Show’ For The 90s Generation
Somewhere along the line – maybe it was around the time that he started popping up on “Saturday Night Live” on a regular basis – it was discovered that Robert De Niro could be funny. Much like Leslie Neilsen years earlier, suddenly De Niro stars in more comedies than dramas, quite the turnaround for a legendary, Oscar-winning thespian. In a film not quite as crass as its title implies, the flimsy plot features De Niro as Dick (laugh riot, right?), who, immediately after the funeral of his wife, insists that his straight-laced yet hunky grandson, Jason Kelly (wooden, stultifyingly unfunny Efron, cast seemingly so once again he can take his shirt off), to take him to Daytona for spring break time.The pair teams up for the, you guessed it, an array of karaoke, frat parties, and young babes – not the least of which is Aubrey Plaza (pictured here), whose

he Paramount in Huntington recently announced that Eric Burdon & The Animals with special guest Leslie West of Mountain, originally scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2015, has been postponed and rescheduled for Saturday, February 6 due to Eric Burdon’s health. West, the legendary guitarist, will be unable to return for the rescheduled show – but he will be ably replaced by Randy Jackson, best known for this role and frontman and creative force for the longstanding, legendary Long Island-based rock supergroup Zebra. In these parts and in this publication, Jackson barely needs an introduction, as he remains one

Zebra shot to fame nationally during the 1980s with a pair of hit albums and FM staples such as “Who’s Behind The Door” and “Slow Down,” and both Jackson and the band haven’t slowed a step since. He was part of two major bands, first as the vocalist of The Animals, and later for fronting the funk band War. The Animals ruled the pop and singles charts for much of the 1960s, scoring such classics as "The House of the Rising Sun," "Sky Pilot," "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." In 1970, Burdon joined the California-based funk band War, and the hits started rolling in once again with "Spill The Wine, "Tobacco Road," "Paint It, Black," and "They Can't Take Away Our Music." A New Star -– Finally: From the PBA's Bill Vint: Jon Van Hees’ patience finally paid its biggest dividend when the 11-year part-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour competitor from Rhode Island defeated Jason Sterner to win the PBA Scorpion Championship at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada, becoming the first Rhode Island native to win a PBA Tour title. “Elated, thousands of emotions,” the 34year-old Van Hees said about winning a title in his first national television appearance at the end of a string of 106 career tournaments. “I’m trying to get a handle on them. It’s been an unbelievable 48 hours … I started this quest 27 years ago. I’ve always been kind of a late bloomer, but if I put the time and effort into it, I can usually get to where I want to go.” Van Hees got his title after surviving a 209191 battle with Lonnie Waliczek in the semifinal round, and a couple of bad frames in the title match after building a nearly insurmountable lead. Chapman may face a suspension because of a domestic violence charge. Aside from that, the Yankees have a solid bullpen with Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances. As the Washington Nationals found out after they acquired Jonathan Papelbon, bullpen chemistry can be a fragile thing. Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump got off a good one-liner at the expense of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, the finance chairman of Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign: “If Woody had been with me, the Jets would have at least made the playoffs!” Trump stated on Twitter. New York Giants owner John Mara could have done a better job selling the notion that it was Tom Coughlin’s decision to step down as team head coach rather than the actuality that he was fired. t’s here once again, and this season things percolated like crazy in these parts in anticipation of Super Bowl 50, to be played on Sunday, February 7 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. During the last week of the NFL campaign, area fans were hopeful that the New York Jets could somehow, despite their under-achieving past few years, make it all the way to the world’s most-watched sporting event – but it was not to be. Mad About Paul: The longtime star and creator of the classic TV comedy “Mad About You,” Paul Reiser, has returned to standup comedy – and he’ll make a tour stop on Saturday, February 6 at

Reiser is clearly a seasoned actor, writer, and producer – his recent series, “Married” (FX) and “Red Oaks” (Amazon) have been hits – but he’s taking a break from the creative process to return to standup comedy, the art form that gave his his early show business fame. His character of Paul Buchman from “Mad About You” is as indelible as Archie Bunker or Andy Taylor; these days, he’s happy to show his more personal side once again. Still, he’s thrilled with what the series, which co-starred Helen Hunt, has meant to so many fans – and to TV history. “You know, when you create a script for a TV show, you really just see the next hurdle ahead of you: How do you get on the air? And then if that goes well, how do you come up with next week’s script, and the next week?” Reiser told Good Times. “I dont think anyone could ever be crazy enough to plan any kind of success like that so far down the line. Having said that, we did always strive to make it a show that was about something. Something that could last. That had, at the core, something that would give us plenty of material to work with week after week, season after season. and fortunately – the center of the show – the question of what makes a relationship work – there’s no shortage of stuff there to work with.”

So why standup once again – and why now? “I had always planned on getting back to standup, after ‘Mad About You,’ but for whatever reasons, I kept sort of kicking that can down the road,” said Reiser. “Then one day a couple of years ago, I was doing a little thing, hosting some charity event – and those are nothing, you go up and tell two jokes and bring up the mayor. But this particular night, there was a great crowd, the mood was right, and it just sparked that thing for
Paul Reiser me. I got home that night and thought, ‘man, that was so fun – why am I not doing that more often?’ And then I just went back in to the comedy clubs – just like when I started at 19. Go down, try some jokes, come back the next night, do it again … till you get it right.” These days, the multi-facted star is juggling live appearances with his many projects; with this type of schedule, it’s certain that Reiser will remain in the national consciousness for years to come. “I’m developing a three or four TV shows, one of which I would star in, the others that I’d just be writing and producing,” said Reiser. “And it looks like we’re going to make a second season of ‘Red Oaks’ on Amazon, which is exciting. It was a really fun group of talented people, so I’m glad that show started to find its audience.”

Who: Good Times receives thousands of requests for reviews, but sometimes something crosses our desks that is so exceptional that we help spread word: “Love You More Than Yesterday,” produced by Tom Douglas (who also co-wrote the song), marks a fantastic debut for young singer Joanna Pisciotta. The Long Island native’s debut video clip on YouTube was launched early last summer, and already has generated more than 100,000 views with no signs of slowing down. Accordig to Douglas, the digital single has also sold more than 1,200 copies on iTunes, a figure that few indie releases come even relatively close to. The song is an upbeat and rocking piece of pop craftsmanship with a great hook and a beautiful vocal by Pisciotta. It’s about as radio-ready as any indepenent The Hit single we’ve heard in a quite YouTube Clip awhile, and is worth checking out by pop fans. The song is also available at Amazon, Spotify, Google Play, and everywhere music is sold. The Artist & Her Sound: Her official bio: “Joanna Pisciotta is an 18-year-old singer/songwriter from Long Island, New York. She had been singing since she was a toddler, but didn't start performing for people in public until she was about 14. “Eventually, Pisciotta met music producer and songwriter Tom Douglas, and created the song ‘Love You More Than Yesterday,’ which took around two years to release. In the creativee process, both Tom and Joanna grew at their craft, and continue to excel to this day. Creating this song was an amazing experience for Joanna, and she is thankful she had the opportunity to do this.”
It was 1970, 1971; I was writing for magazines right out of high school, including Good Times. Hippies were at their peak. I’m sure I had heard the name David Bowie; it passed me by, and I kept right on going. Hunky Dory, folk singer in a floppy hat, okay, whatever.
Sane, cemented the problems that were already evident. AM and FM radio didn't want to know about this “homosexual” (which is what, I was told, WABC radio deejay Cousin Brucie allegedly said about "Space Oddity," the one glam period single that actually got some brief airplay). Aladdin Sane’s cover art, with the nude, colorful, thunderbolt graphic, cemented the “unisexual” image ... and there were no hits off the album. The fabulous "Jean Genie” bombed on the singles chart; they removed the gay-oriented hit single that was on the UK album, "John I'm Only Dancing,” from the U.S. version of the disk and replaced it with “Lady Grinning Soul." RCA and MainMan had begun to panic; the hillbillies in America were simply not having it. "Time" and a cover of "Let's Spend The Night Together” were also released as singles, and flopped as well. I was livid, as were the core followers, but the end result was no more touring from Bowie, and the end of The Spiders From Mars, as the band was dissolved. The year of 1973 saw the next Bowie album, Pin Ups, and its single, "Sorrow,” do no more business than the previous releases, even after NBC's "The Midnight Special” gave Bowie an entire 90-minute program timed with the release. Changes were to follow: Bowie started wearing a suit, and the MainMan “gay empire” was diffused; a lot of money was going out but not coming back in. After Diamond Dogs and another flop single ("Rebel Rebel") in 1974, Bowie eventually put on a suit and made great soul/funk dance records, and started having massive hits – a #1 with "Fame" and all the rest that followed. He went into various musical genres, and years later, those old, original RCA albums from early-to-mid-70s suddenly became hailed as classics by the same people who did everything they could to destroy them, and him. I followed it all, sometimes losing interest, but I always realized that “gay Bowie” was always in there, and that he is truly The Man Who Changed The World. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten, and my memories of 1972 through 1975 will always be with me. Rest in peace.

I deeply trusted my mentor, Gloria Stavers, who ran the teen bible, 16 Magazine. In 1972, she ran a rave review of The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by David Bowie. As RCA was one of the few labels that wasn't sending me free records – and because I trusted Gloria – I went out and actually bought a copy of the album. I listened and smiled, and eventualy followed this artist forever – I realized this was me, he “knew” me, talked about me. I became a Bowie boy. I wore the album to death and became a "Bowie witness,” practically going door to door turning my friends on to it, on to “that queer,” as some said. I wondered why I wasn't hearing Bowie on album rock radio, or why the brilliant single from the album, “Starman,” wasn't racing up the singles chart. Next, I heard radio guys making fun of the very idea of David Bowie: David Bowie. I 1947-2016 read Robert Christgau, who belittled the recorded work of this “fairy,” as the rock critic referred to him. I remembered where I was, where I had always been, trapped in the hateful, homophobic America of the early 70s, and now it had a target: David Bowie. I became a vengeful warrior, found out about the Bowie-based company MainMan, headquartered in New York City, populated with Andy Warhol-related folks such as Leee Black Childers, Tony Zanetta, Jayne (who was still Wayne) County, and all the rest. Bowie's company became a gay umbrella of sorts for Lou Reed, Iggy & The Stooges, Dana Gillespie, and Mott The Hoople. David and Angie Bowie were the rulers of this empire, with manager Tony Defries running the business. I made frequent visits to the Manhattan office, got on their mailing list, and fought the losing battle for Bowie to be taken seriously. Ziggy was a low-charting flop on the album chart; I was devastated, and that made me more determined. The album that followed, Aladdin
