Relationship Help In Commack

There’s something rather poetic about a program such as this in the same town that hosts one of New York’s most notorious motor inns, but we digress: “Early Stages Of Separation & Divorce” is offered Wednesdays at 8:15 pm through April at The Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center in Commack. Info: (631) 462-9800, or log on to suffolkyjcc.org. assapequa's gift to real rock & roll is coming home for the holidays again: On the heels of announcing Rockin' Rudolph – their first studio Christmas album in 10 years now out on Surfdog Records – Brian Setzer and his Brian Setzer Orchestra have revealed the itinerary for their 2015 "12th Annual Christmas Rocks!” tour, which includes a stop on November 29 at 8 pm at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Tickets are on sale now; log on to thetheatreatwestbury.com or ticketmaster.com. The iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and three-time Grammy-Award winner and his 18-piece Orchestra will visit 31 cities on the

tour that began on November 14 in Minneapolis, which is also making stops in Detroit, New Orleans, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their 12th annual trek will feature music off the new album – which is available as a limited edition box set, CD, vinyl, or download – plus music from their three previous best-selling holiday albums, as well as original material from Setzer. "It's always exciting to add new songs," said Setzer about the set list for a show that annual is one of of the most highly anticiapated in this area. "I'm thinking about opening with 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.' We have never done that one before." Produced by Peter Collins (Rush, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper) and recorded in both Nashville and Hollywood, the 12-track Rockin' Rudolplh includes highlights such as the aforementioned "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "YabbaDabba Yuletide," and "Rockabilly Rudolph," among other notable Christmas classic tunes. Setzer's trademark guitar work and vocal stylings are matched with his orchestra's rockin' big-band horn arrangements. Setzer seems effusive about he and his orchestra’s take on holiday classics – as he should be as songs such as “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” burst from the speakers, buoyed by new-age big band arrangements and fresh energy. “Listen to that swinging chart Mark Jones and I wrote, and it catches your ear up top,” said Setzer. “You know that it is BSO, when it comes at you with the crazy chords from the beginning, but you don’t know what song it could be. It’s just like chaos, and it sounds like you are stuck in traffic. Then the song comes in, and it’s awesome. I had my way of scuffing it up and making it bad ass, substituting chords, scuffing about the vocal, and that great guitar solo. I really love the solo. It is where the microphone got bumped, and it was in the wrong spot. Like I said, the original ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ is great. You cannot beat it, but have to make it your own.”

Orchestra, and solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world's greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. In 2002, Setzer earned the privilege of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of "The Simpsons," alongside Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Tom Petty. During thta same year of 2002, Setzer was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th annual Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. In 2014, Setzer received the distinct honor of being asked by The Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 "Stray Cat" guitar, joining an elite collection of musical instruments on display. Perhaps what makes these holiday albums so special is that releasing them is not a marketing ploy in the least: Setzer has genuine affection for the classic tunes he’s selected. “First of all, these songs are great songs,” said Setzer. “It doesn’t matter if they are holiday songs or when they were written, they are just great songs. The trick is to make them sound hip, and some of them are eternally hip — you know? You don’t have to do too much. Take a song like ‘Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,’ which everybody knows. On the Christmas tour, I started playing that in a rockabilly fashion — which would be in a minor key — with a rockabilly beat and I just started singing. It could have been anything. Then it was over Christmas and I said, ‘Oh My Gosh! That probably started it.’ I was making it hip and cool and bringing it into my own style. That was really the first song that I made sound like that.” One of rock's legendary guitarists, Setzer is a "musician's musician" credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while singlehandedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the 80s and swing in the 90s). Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records, and received The Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of The Stray Cats, his 18piece Brian Setzer

Starring Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Christoph Waltz, Dave Bautista, Andrew Scott, Ralph Fiennes Directed by Sam Mendes Sony Pictures “Please, James Bond, save us once again!” That's not a line from this lastest spy meller based on the legendary 007, created by Ian Fleming – that's the assembled cry of theater owners, who have seen recent cinema receipt tallies drop more than at any recalled time in modern film history (see our Media column for more). There's no question that this – the 24th Bond film and the fourth to feature Daniel Craig as the debonair British agent – is the movie that truly launches the holiday film season. Directed again by Sam Mendes, whose

Film

Spectre

Skyfall presented the first aging, fallible James Bond, this new film (reportedly with a record budget of more than $300 million) sticks with the formula: The extended opening scene, this time set in Mexico City, is, as usual, worth the price of admission all by itself, with action and special effects fairly bursting off the screen. It's a thrilling start, but after the more human, somewhat sheepish Bond so deftly portrayed by Craig the last time out, this new epic fails to even hint at the last one, other than Ralph Fiennes replacing Judy Dench as M (killed by gunfire at the conclusion of the last film, forcing The Secret Intelligence Service to replace her). This time out, Bond comes up against Oberhauser (a shockingly

restrained Waltz), whose history has led him to a maniacal obsession to obliterate 007. Everyone's fine – the lust interest this time, Madeline Swann (Seydoux), is typically breathtaking – but the lavish special effects tend to overwhelm the pacing, as the folks at Sony seemed intent on selling the aging Bond character to the young crowd that fills multiplexes to see superheroes. It's all louder, more violent, and noiser, but that's what seems to sell these days. Spectre isn't the worst Bond Film (hi, Roger Moore), and not nearly the best, but watching Bond is like a welcome visit from an old friend. You won't be shaken or stirred, but the rugged Craig's winning performance, as always, will leave fans entertained. – Cody Bell

eyelash of winning the 2014 World Series – then proved they weren’t a fluke from last year. It remains to be seen if the Mets will be able to prove the same thing in 2016. The Mets will have to make a decision on several players who are now free agents, espcially outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and second baseman Daniel Murphy. Cespedes was acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the July 31 trade deadline, and was a key reason why the Mets leapfrogged over the Nationals to the National League East division title. Unfortunately, Cespedes did little in the postseason, and showed a low baseball IQ in the fourth game of the World Series by booting a ball in the centerfield, and took his sweet time picking it up. He also was caught off first base after Lucas Duda hit a soft liner to Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas to end that game, putting the Mets in a three games-to-one hole. Cespedes is expecting Fort Knox riches with his next contract, and the Mets, of all teams, are not going to do that for him. The decision on Murphy will be a tougher call for Mets general manager Sandy Alderson. Murphy is a homegrown Met, and has played in Queens

ESPN, which has had some financial Jeurys reversals this Familia year although still profitable, shut down its Grantland website. While there was predictable outrage from Grantland founder Bill Simmons, who ESPN chairman John Skipper booted out five months earlier, as well as from other sports eggheads, I happen to agree with Skipper. The truth is that Grantland did not get many eyeballs, otherwise ESPN would have kept it going no matter what its executives thought of the overrated Simmons. In my opinion, The Wall Street Journal’s Jason Gay is a far wittier columnist. I rarely saw anyone with a Grantland press credential at the sporting events that I covered. Who: Funk Filharmonik, easily one of Long Island’s longest lasting R&B groups (or of any musical genre), is about to take part in something unprecidented: The group’s “Funksgiving 30” – yes, meaning that it is the 30th year that the famed act will perform a Thanksgiving concert – is scheduled for Wednesday, November 25 at 8 pm at a new venue: The Madison Theatere at Molloy College in Rockville Centre. For reserve advance tickets, visit madisontheatreny.com. Doors will open at 7 pm for this all-ages show; light snacks and beer and wine will be available. The Artists & Their Sound: This longstanding powerhouse of a band has a history that few artists from any region could ever hope to duplicate; from their bio: “For 30 years, Funk Filharmonik has been a magnet for music fans and fellow musicians of all types in the New York metropolitan area. The music speaks for itself when they cover bands like Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, and Tower Of Power, as well as their own arrangements from their CD, entitled Everybody Get Down. “Funk Filharmonik’s performances have become an increasingly rare occurrence due to their individual touring schedules with marquee musical acts like Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, The Original Blues Brothers Band, Huey Lewis, ‘Live at Daryl's House,’ Joan Osborne, The Young Presidents, Richard Bona, Robert Davi, and Michael Cavanaugh, as well as Broadway and off-Broadway musicals. The fellas are known to surprise audiences with a spontaneous tune or arrangement, and even special guests. The jovial camaraderie that exudes from the stage is contagious. This is a must-see band and performance.” FF Trivia: Here’s some fun facts: The group’s original name was Funk Philharmonia; its first show was on November 21, 1985. Members have recorded or performed with Mariah Carey, The Allman Brothers, John Oates, and too many more national acts than we have room to list here ... Learn more at funkfilharmonik.com.

The Dark Star Orchestra – easily one of the most successful tribute bands on the road, performing the music of The Grateful Dead – return to the area on November 28 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. Tickets are on sale now via ticketmaster.com; for moreinformation, visit paramountny.com. Peforming more than 130 shows a year – every single year – Dark Star Orchestra has made it to The Grateful Dead’s staggering milestone of 2,318 shows ... played in nearly half the time of the Dead’s 30 years of playing together. Dark Star Orchestra has been endorsed by critics and fans and has played alongside every living member of the original Grateful

well as a following that echoes that of the original band as fans following DSO from town to town. “Playing with Dark Star Orchestra feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with The Grateful Dead,” said Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the Grateful Dead’s vocalist and frequent DSO guest. Fans and critics haven’t been the only people caught up in the spirit of a Dark Star show. The band has featured guest performances from five original Grateful Dead members in Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, GodchauxMacKay, Vince Welnick, and Tom Constanten, and even toured with longtime Dead soundman Dan Healy. Double Dose Of Dead At The Paramount Dead, as well as their soundman of nearly three decades. For more than 16 years, Dark Star Orchestra has embodied the Grateful Dead’s live experience for fans both old and too young to have ever seen their own Grateful Dead show, until recently. Recreating historic Grateful Dead set lists and intermittently crafting their own, Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within the Grateful Dead’s canon. Matching equipment, stage layout, and even band members (various eras have included female vocals or multiple drummers), Dark Star Orchestra’s determined commitment to “raising the Dead” has earned them high praise as

notable guests have included Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish, Keller Williams, Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Peter Rowan, the legendary Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, and many more. "For us it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years," the veteran rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Eaton explained. "We offer a sort of a historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985, 1978, or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s, we offer something they never got to see live."

WHEELS & DEALS REUNION AT REVOLUTION

First formed in the 1980s, Whitford/St. Holmes – featuring Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and Derek St. Holmes, best known for his work with Ted Nugent – is back, and their current tour will bring them to Revolution in Amityville on Saturday, November 21; tickets and info are at revolutionli.com. After selling tens of millions of records around the world with their current bands Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, Whitford and St. Holmes have reunited for their second album and world tour. The newly reunited lineup also features drummer Troy Luccketta from Tesla and bassist Chopper Anderson, a Nashville legend. The band’s second release is slated for early 2016, with a new single arriving soon. St. Holmes was the voice of many classic Nugent tunes, including “Stranglehold,” “Just What The Doctor Ordered,” “Snakeskin Cowboys,” “Death By Misadventure,” “Live It Up,” and “Dog Eat Dog,” among others. He’s also a revered guitarist. Whitford, who tours with The Joe Perry Project as well as Aerosmith, has made significant contributions to Aerosmith’s repertoire over the years, including writing (and playing lead guitar on) Aerosmith's hit “Last Child,” as well as countless other songs.

When Modest Mouse stormed this lavish club, it seemed everyone knew – the line of fans streched around the venue to see the punk-influenced band. Although the lineup of the group has changed many times, it’s

clear their most ardent fans still support them. Opening song “Strangers To Ourselves” was no surprise to those fans, who have followed the band through thick and thin. Issac Brock’s vivid lyrics and uniquely stylish voice were accompanied by his ambient guitar licks; adding to the pleasure was violin by multi-instrumentalist Lisa Molinari of Talkdemonic, who performed on vocals as well. The hit “As The Ocean Breathes Salty” followed, with Brock in full throttle.

Whipping his guitar about while somehow keeping his voice crisp and clear, the punk influence was fully apparent. After “Lampshades On Fire,” the band’s recent single, the group went on to play a variety of tracks from their catalog, not all of them hits – it wasn't until “Float On” was played that casual listeners got to hear a song they immediately recognized. The song was perfomred brilliantly; the chorus became a sing-along for the audience. “Doin' The Cockroach” showed how structurally powerful Modest Mouse is, chopping down chords before the song's climax. They took it down a notch with the bright “Sleepwalking,” but kicked it back into high gear for set closer “Fly Trapped In A Jar.” Encoring with seven (!) songs, Mouse came out jamming with “Dark Center Of The Universe,” which got the crowd moving, and they stayed up through the closer, “Parting Of The Sensory.” Modest Mouse clearly left their mark on their fans once again.

For more than 30 years, there has been one screaming banshee that helped pave the way and preserve the genre some call grunge: Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who appeared here for two acoustic performances in support of his new album, Higher Truth. Before the first song each night, Cornell made sure to shake some hands and pay homage to the mostly 30-to-40 yearold crowds that packed the shows. Never staying in one spot for more than a song, Cornell packed the shows (25 songs on the first night, 26 on the second) with cover songs, solo singles, and band favorites. “Fell On Black Days,” “Blow Up The Outside World,” “The Day I Tried To Live,” and “Black Hole Sun,” among others, gave Soundgarden fans their grunge fill. Unfortunately, Audioslave fans only received two songs per night, though “Like A

Stone” and “Wide Awake” were exceptional. Temple Of The Dog fans got to finally hear “Say Hello To Heaven,” “Call Me A Dog,” and “Hunger Strike, which hadn’t been performed since the early 1990s. Cornell mixed in covers such as Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are AChangin’,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You.” A little of everything meant a lot of enjoyment for the assembled throng. Closing both nights with “Higher Truth,” Cornell seemed to satisfy his fans with his twohour shows. To sit through a solo acoustic performance is in no way comparable to a real rock show, but Cornell proved that if you take the time to mix in the right songs from your discography and keep your audience intrigued and involved, you will have success. – Text & photos by Christopher Jon Smaragdas

Mass Hits: Top 40 has become something very different than it was from the 1950s through the early part of the 90s. It is more transitory than music media has been throughout the courses of the past 50 years. A big reason for

thus, are mostly disposable after a few hits. Media mavens such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber have learned to survive, by stunts and headlines as much as by tunes. As such, none of their prior hits show up as recent gold or, in the language of the industry, recurrents. The days of celebrating oldies, gold, or throwbacks, are done, as it seems that “ain't nobody got time for that” now. No bodies of work are looked upon with pride – just now, just this second in time, is all that

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

this is mass media making so many choices available for the consumption of tunes, so there is no universal radio station or MTV, if you will, where everyone experiences every- Guns ’N Roses thing together at the same time. The other culprit is radio, which offers a very slim window as to what the sound of “now” is; at one point, the street played a major role, as The Beatles were rejected by radio in 1963 until the kids said otherwise. The same is true of Guns 'N Roses, Nirvana, disco, and hip hop. Record store mingling made sparks fly (along with smart-ass record clerks), but that component is no longer in play. Trends, once frequent, are now dormant in music. Where, then, does that leave us? We hear songs that all resemble each other, and vocalists (mostly female) that resemble each other. The songs are chanted, repeated mantras, which serve as points of interest Adele

for a week or two, and then blend into the carpet or the wallpaper. "Stars” these days is a relative term, as the performers are too needy and too available, and

matters at radio, which sets the tone for the culture. Adele Again: So along comes Adele with her new album, 25, diving into the middle of the muddle – and after 30 million copies sold of her previous album, 21, the industry has their hopes pinned on 25 “saving the record business,” a heavy cross to bear. There is no record business to save, as there are no record stores to be saved, except for a handful popping up in each state, not nearly enough to support or generate what once was. The one exciting thing that I noticed while walking through Barnes & Noble was an aisle devoted to vinyl records, lovingly racked as they once were in Sam Goody's, where I managed the record department in the mid1970s at the Smith Haven Mall store. If only a concerted effort were to be made to sell vinyl and turntables to play them on, then things may change. Collecting may start again, and true fan bases may be established. Streaming is for the casual listener, but vinyl is for the true fan.

Song selections range from the sentimental ("Winter Wonderland" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas") to the irreverent ("F&*k Christmas" and "Jesus

Was a Dreidel Spinner"). Comics, magicians, female impersonators and even a somber clown have been additions, adding the mix that makes this a classic variety show. BITS & PIECES Lily Meola

From Maui To Wowee: Lily Meola A Rising Star

Maui-born singer/songwriter Lily Meola is just now finishing her first album, but her name and voice are already familiar to fans of Willie Nelson and Jamey Johnson. She's duetted with both – not only at the last three Farm Aids, but also on Nelson's To All the Girls ... album and Johnson's The Christmas Song EP. She's also toured with Nelson, and her upcoming album contains their collaboration as well as one with fellow Hawaiian Islander Kris Kristofferson. "You may know it: 'Me and Bobby McGee,'" she said with a slight laugh. "Normally, I would never touch that song; it's Janis Joplin, nobody can top that. But it's a duet with Kris Kristofferson, so I feel like, 'Yeah, I can put that out because he wrote it.' I feel like I've earned the right to sing it." Meola's got the kind of voice that can deliver swingin' honkytonk, cool jazz-blues, or a gospelpure "Hallelujah" with equal dex-

terity. Her "adoption" into the Nelson family included opening for Willie and his Family Band on tour. Her album will contain at least two of her songs, she says, in addition to tracks written for her by friends Tabitha Coldiron, Luke Houglum, Lukas Nelson, and Jim "Moose" Brown.
