In the years following, Robinson continued to pen hits for the group, including “You’ve Really Got A Hold On

The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960s and early 70s, and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records, serving as in-house producer, talent scout, and songwriter. In addition to writing hits for The Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats including The Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye and others. “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “You Beat Me To The Punch,” “Don’t Mess With Bill,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “My Guy” are some of his songwriting hits during those years. Robinson later turned to a solo career, where he continued his tradition of hitmaking with “Just To See Her,” “Quiet Storm,” “Cruisin’,” and “Being With You.” He remained Vice President of Motown until the sale of the company, shaping the label’s success with Gordy. Following his tenure at Motown, he continued his tireless touring career, and released several successful solo albums. During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit and continues to entertain sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing, and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Robinson remains a beloved icon in the history of American popular music.

Film Reviews

The Martian

Starring Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Aksel Hennie Directed by Ridley Scott 20th Century Fox

Much unlike our usual stance on what comes out of Hollywood, we'll declare this first and foremost: The Martian, based on the best-selling 2011 novel, could very likely become one of the year's biggest blockbusters, and in decades to come it could very well become talked about in a similar way that people speak fondly of Star Wars, Jaws, and E.T. Yes, it's that good. If you're into Matt Damon, this is certainly the movie for you; the star spends a majority of the film alone on the big screen. If that sounds boring, don't let that nugget sway you: This is a space-flight film that grabs the heart and the mind from the first scene, and doesn't let up for more than two hours. In a movie that plays somewhat like a merger of Castaway and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Damon delivers an understated yet intense performance that clearly has the earmarks of an Academy Award best actor nod all over it. Director Ridley Scott does a stellar job of telling the story of a brave astronaut, Mark

By Cody Bell Watney, who is left on his own and basically left to die by his team of fellow space travelers after a a manned mission to Mars (say that 10 times fast) goes disastrously awry. The crew can't be blamed for leaving him; Watney's been impaled by an antenna, but he eventually recovers, using the space station to repair his body. That's all well and good – but the Mars space station isn't scheduled to receive another landing for years, he's going to run out of food,

and the world back on Earth is aching to save him. Sound intensely dour? Not in this case; the rich source material by Andy Weir provides room for laughs, fear, doubts, and hopes all at the same time. A great supporting cast (particularly Chastain and Wiig) only add to the inter-stellar entertainment. The Martian is a popcorn flick, sure, but it's the best kind: It has both a head and a heart. Let the awards roll in.

Knock Knock (October 8): What happens with a father and husband, left alone for the weekend, gets an unexpected visit from two “stranded” hot young women at his home? Sex and horror, we'll assume; Eli Roth (Hostel) shows former movie star Keanu Reeves how to star in a stupid movie that will no doubt suck – it's “on-demand” at the same time it will hit Theater 10 in about six mallplexes.

Anyone remember hard rock that wasn't a bunch of clowns in corny costumes? Here's the antidote: Since his 1976 debut album featuring his brand of 70s guitar rock, Travers has gone on to deliver melodic 80s rock, a blues period throughout most of the 90s, noted performances with various power trios during the first few years of the new millennium, and a fullblooded return to the trademark Pat Travers Band sound as he now is in his fifth decade of performing.

SportsBeat It’s still too early to for New York Giants fans to put up the white flag for the 2015 season, but it wouldn’t be hard to blame them. It was going to be an uphill climb after All-Pro defensive end Jason Jason PierrePierrePaul lost his Paul middle finger and part of his thumb stupidly handling fireworks during the July 4 holiday. Not surprisingly, the Giants pass rush has been below par, though veteran Robert Ayres played well in the early going. The difference between victory and defeat generally rests on the shoulders and throwing arm of quarterback Eli Manning. In the humiliating opening game, unfortunately broadcast on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” poor communication and clock mismanagement led to a heartbreaking 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. A week later, with the Giants up on the Atlanta Falcons 20-10, Manning was

Capuano is one of the most congenial, intelligent athletes in the sport (he graduated Duke University with a degree in economics), and he knows that at age 37 the odds are that his big league career may soon coming to an end. He told me that at least one television network has approached him about a career in broadcasting, but that he is seriously thinking about going for his MBA degree full time. My guess is that Capuano will be a Major League Baseball team executive in a few years. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman,

who grew up in Medford, suffered a leg injury that sidelined him for most of the season; he returned to action late in the season. Stroman took advantage of his down time and returned to Capuano’s alma mater, Duke, to finish the requirements for his bachelor’s degree. “I can’t understand why any athlete would go to Duke without intending to finish,” Marcus said. And yes, he told me that he grew up reading Good Times when I presented him with the latest copy. The Mets’ resurgence brought out celebrities who I had never seen at Citi Field before. The first album, Peter Karp's The Arson's Match, was originally broadcast live on Sirius Satellite Radio during a 2004 performance at the longlamented Bottom Line in New York City. The second CD, Change by Sue Foley, is a live acoustic blues album also recorded in 2004 in Toronto's famous Hugh's Room. All proceeds from the sales and downloads of the CD set will benefit The Ovarian Cancer

Fun in loving memory of Peter Carp's wife, Mary Lou Karp, who died from the disease in 2009. Get it at ocrf.org/ downloads. “Mary Lou Bonney Karp was a remarkable writer, a poet, a daughter, a mother and my wife of 25 years,” wrote Karp. “In June of 2008, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She died nine months later on February 17, 2009. While she had vague and disconnected symptoms for years, no one saw it coming. She was misdiagnosed (which happens often) with a back problem. This CD is to honor her memory. Before Mary Lou became sick, we knew nothing about ovarian cancer. Now I

Artie’s The Attraction: Longtime “Howard Stern Show” regular and A-list standup star Artie Lange headlines on Saturday, October at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury. Tickets and more informtion can be found at thespaceatwestbury.com. So what more can one fellow do? Comedian. Actor. Writer. Producer. Entrepreneur. Radio personality. One of the most sought-after live comedians in the business, Lange is currently the co-host of “The Artie Lange Show,” a Fox News Radio show

Tape after writing and performing with other troupes, including Midnight Madness and The Improvables. Lange’s breakout work with Live On Tape landed him his debut television role as one of the original series regulars on FOX’s “Mad TV.” The comic’s success on “Mad TV” led to being cast opposite Norm MacDonald in Lange’s first starring role in the MGM feature film Dirty Work. This led to a string of feature films, including New Line’s The Bachelor, starring opposite Chris O’Donnell and

know that it is a vicious, silent killer of women, and that the only way to stop it is to spread the word about early detection.” Our take: Even without the charity involvement, this double-dip of earthy blues is a stone bargain, featuring two great Nashville artists at the top of their games. We’ve said it before, and we’ll keep harping (so to speak) until every hears it: Contemporary blues is as real as any other form of pop – and Karp and Foley are exceptional together or solo. – Bob Smith

he created. Launched this past fall, the show has garnered rave reviews and a massive fan base. Lange was a regular on “The Howard Stern Show” for five years; during that time, his first memoir, Too Fat To Fish, became a New York Times bestseller, paving the way for his second book, Crash And Burn, published in 2013. Lange’s first TV standup hourlong special, “The Stench Of Failure,” premiered on Comedy Central in October 2014. Lange began his career in the clubs of New York City, where he helped to create the popular sketch comedy group Live On

Renee Zellweger; Lost And Found with David Spade for Warner Brothers; Kinka Usher’s Mystery Men; and the independent drama The Fourth Floor opposite Juliette Lewis and William Hurt. Lange also starred, co-wrote, and produced his own feature film, Beer League. He’s also been a regular guest on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and “The Best Damn Sports Show, Period.” He was a guest roaster on Comedy Central’s Roasts of Hugh Hefner and William Shatner, and also shot episodes of the hit series “Entourage” for HBO.

P

op’s daring new emerging star, Tove Lo, headlines on Tuesday, October 20 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington; Erik Hassle opens the show. Learn more and get tickets at paramountny.com. As anyone with ears will tell you, Sweden is quite good when it comes to fostering pop talent. With Stockholm’s Tove Lo, however, the typical mould of elegant heartfelt electropop has been beautifully corrupted by the sort of lyrical honesty and rawness that not only ruffles feathers, but makes you want to clutch your hand to your chest and wail along at the top of your lungs. Having self-released two examples of her unique take on pop – the clattering bloodletting of “Love Ballad” and the raw, but disarmingly melodic “Habits” – Tove Lo is ready to take her pop confessionals to a whole new level. Music was always going to be something Tove

TOVE LO

Pop’s Uninhibited New ‘It Girl’ Arrives At The Paramount Lo was involved in. Her high school, for example, wasn’t like most high schools. Run by teachers whose motto apparently was “f**k reading, let’s play music,” it was there that Lo met both of Icona Pop, forming bands left, right, and center and learning how to write songs. Singing in bands was something Lo also did, fronting a “math rock” band and playing what she affectionately refers to as “shitty” venues. “I wanted to write but couldn’t play anything, and the guitarist in the band put music to my lyrics so that’s how it all started,” she explained. “It was such hard music and it would change key and tempo all the time. You had to understand it, like mathematical rock. We’d play all these awful bars where there were no monitors or anything. It was always pretty rowdy, so I got a lot of stage experience.” At the same time, she also started working on her own demos in-between earning money as a session singer. “I think I just started to feel like I wasn’t really into that music anymore,” she explains of her need to spread her wings. “I wanted to experiment more with other sounds and not keep it so organic. I was into the electronic stuff that was happening, and the guitar player was very against that sort of stuff. I started producing my own songs on my computer,, which was fun.” Perhaps as a sign of her intent, those early recording sessions took place in a freezing cold shed turned makeshift studio. “My cousins had a shed outside of their house,” said Lo. “It wasn’t heated, so I had this heater in there and sometimes in the winter it would be -10. The days I didn’t have a session I’d walk my dog there and just sit there all day and produce my own songs. ‘Habits’ and ‘Love Ballad’ were kind of started there, actually.” In-between living her life, writing songs about the various ups and downs in her life (break-ups, drink and drugs, raucous nights out and emotionally barren mornings after) and earning a living, Lo also set about cultivating her songwriting career. At a party held by her friends Icona Pop to celebrate them signing a record deal, Lo decided it would be a good idea to harass some people from their label. “I just walked up to someone and said to him, ‘you have to hear my songs, they’re amazing’,” Lo laughed.

“It was just to get some feedback from someone. He was like ‘who the f**k are you?,’ but I forced him to give me his email address and so I got that and sent him some stuff. He replied saying there was something there, and we sort of planned a meeting in Stockholm.” From there, she signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, and before long she found herself being flown out to Los Angleses to hang out at pop songwriting legend Max Martin’s house via newfound friend and fellow songwriting legend Alex Kronlund. “It gave me so much more confidence because at the beginning, you don’t know what you like,” she said. “If someone says it’s good, you almost immediately believe them.” The impromptu meeting has since resulted in Lo becoming part of Martin’s pop songwriting team, working on some of the biggest forthcoming pop releases. However, it’s with her own songs that Lo’s real songwriting chops come to fore, as evidenced on her debut EP, the tellingly titled Truth Serum. At its core is “Habits,” which garnered so much blog buzz it led to not just a deal with Universal, but the attention of the pop label Neon Gold, who are releasing a special limited edition of Truth Serum on vinyl in America as well as hosting Lo at their SXSW showcase. Shifting effortlessly from verses that detail the lengths people go to to forget their pain (visits to sex clubs, casual sex with strangers, lots of drinking), to a chorus that soars with barely restrained anguish, “Habits” is anchored by

Lo’s impassioned vocal as it wraps itself around the line, “you’re gone and I’ve got to stay high all the time to keep you off my mind.” “‘Habits’ is about my ex,” Lo shrugged. “It was a lot of passion and pain clouded by smoke and it was chaos. Really up and down. He then changed his life around and joined a Buddhist movement, and I wasn’t ready for that at all so I left.” Did she ever think of restraining her honesty in any way? “I don’t like to filter it. I get into a flow and get it out, but if I stop myself I just think ‘why? Why be subtle? Just say it as it is.’ It’s not ‘I’m a single girl, let’s party all night long,’ it’s more ‘I’m really destructive right now and I don’t care.’ I think my honesty bothers some people.” Her performances also could be dubbed “uninhbited” and perhaps shocking to some; her Paramount debut will likely be talked about for some time to come. No matter the outcome, Tove Lo is easily one of the hottest new artists of 2015, and a best bet to supplant the “girly girl” current radio stars and take her place at the top of the pop world. Learn much more at tove-lo.com, or find her on Facebook.

Photos provided by the artists or their representatives and area venues; Winery Dogs by Jamel Toppin (jameltoppin.com)

Long famed for its special music events, Looney Tunes Records in West Babylon will feature the red-hot Winery Dogs performing acoustic tunes and signing autographs on Wednesday, October 7 at 8 pm; learn how to attend at Ltcds.com. It would be easy to call The Winery Dogs a supergroup: Vocalist and guitarist Richie Kotzen made his mark with Poison and Mr. Big, bassist Billy Sheehan has been rocking for decades with Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, and others, and drummer Mike Portnoy was the co-founder of progressive metal superstars Dream Theater. To attend this event, fans must purchase their new CD, Hot Streak, from Looney Tunes. After you pick up the CD, you will get a wristband to attend this event. During this event, the band will perform some acoustic songs, and sign autographs. The Winery Dogs perform on October 10 at Best Buy Theater in New York City. Long Island Filmmaker’s Busy Year It has been quite a year for Merrick filmmaker Debra Markowitz and her films The Last Taxi Driver, Leaving, Stuff, and Living With The Dead, as well as other films she cast and produced. The Last Taxi Driver and Leaving both were screened at The Northeast Film Festival in Teaneck, New Jersey on September 12 and September 13. Leaving was nominated for three awards: Markowitz for Best Director, the film for Best Short Film, and lead actress Molly Ryman for Best Actress in a short. Hitting Long Island again, The Last Taxi Driver was screened at The Long Beach Film Festival in its comedy shorts block on September 25 at The Long Beach Hotel. Markowitz has been busy: She also directed the film By Blood, starring New Jersey’s Joseph A. LONG ISLAND SOUNDS Text & photos by Christopher Jon Smaragdas

Peter Frampton / Cheap Trick • The Paramount • Huntington Do you feel like they do? Experiencing Peter Frampton and his band along with Cheap Trick may make you realize how inspiring these rock veterans are, and help you realize where some of the greatest ballads of today’s pop/rock world came from. Cheap Trick, the ultimate rock & roll party band, lit up The Paramount stage with “Hello There,” and hooked the audience right from the start; the band was exceptionally tight and rocked hard. Lead singer Robin Zander sported a leather hat and jacket; his confident style showed how he has influenced so many lead singers through the decades. Lead guitarist Rick Nielsen delivered his usual stellar performance, offering his quickly licks with Pete Townsend-like guitar moves. Sporting his signature hat and a pair of cool shades, Nielsen seemed to be truly enjoying himself even more than usual. Blaring out “Lookout,” “Big Eyes,” and “Ain’t That a Shame,” these 70s stalwarts hit high gear with “Heaven Tonight”; Nielsen’s guitar changes were sublime, and the pacing was impeccable. The crowd-moving

hit “The Flame” was peformed near the end of the set, followed by “I Want You To Want Me,” which ignited the crowd. With many on their feet, Cheap Trick bled into “Dream Police” and perhaps their

biggest hit, “Surrender.” Exiting with the hard-moving “Gonna Raise Hell,” Trick had many enthralled fans chanting for more. The legendary guitarist Frampton and his band opened with “Something’s Happening” and “Doobie Wah” to get the room going. Feeling the excitement from the audience, they somewhat surprisingly offered the classic “Show Me The Way”quite early in the set, which prompted some in the crowd to storm the front of the stage. Using his TalkBox (which many call

the guitarist’s signature sound), Frampton was all smiles. As he began to deliver the beautiful “Lines On My Face,” it was apparent that Frampton’s backing band excelled in every style; the well-chosen musicians helped Frampton deliver all styles of songs with precision and force. More surprises: Frampton turned to soul with his cover of the Stevie Wonder hit, “Signed, Sealed, & Delivered,” getting the patrons moving once again, featuring his

singing that hasn’t aged a bit. At the halfway point, Frampton offered his guitar epic “I’ll Give You Money,” which served was a prequel to the

remaining songs for the evening; the oft-covered “Baby I love Your Way” was another crowd pleaser. Even more surprises: An instrumental cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” which captivated the younger members of the audience, who certainly knew the 90s grunge hit by heart. Ending the set with “Do You Feel Like We Do” (stretched to nearly 15 minutes long), Frampton again got to show off his Talkbox and his love of blues by soloing for minutes. After the earthy performance, Frampton chose to encore with The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and really took it home for the crowd. In many cases, a setlist of just 10 songs from a headliner would usually makes many in an audience believe they had been cheated, but not in this case – when Peter Frampton does 10 songs, you get the same length of incredible music, if not more. Add in Cheap Trick and their 18 songs, and it surely would be impossible for any classic rocker to think he or she got anything less than the very best during one of the few double bills that worked like a charm, despite the artists’ stark differences.

Moonshine Falls Bluegrass For A Modern World

Who: Moonshine Falls, a band that bridges the gap between traditional bluegrass and the “New Blue” movement, was formed in 2013 in New York City by Mary Noecker (bass and vocals) and Dave McKeon (mandolin, guitar and vocals). Drawing from the canon of bluegrass standards as well as writing songs that fit seamlessly with those of yesterday, the members of Moonshine Falls create a sound that is steeped in tradition without drowning in it. Weeds In The Ballast, their debut CD, was recorded at The Treehouse in Ridgetop, Tennessee, by Grammy-nominated engineer Tim Carter, and was co-produced by Carter and McKeon. Carter is also featured on banjo along with Matt Combs (current staff fiddle player for the Grand Ole Opry) and Smith Curry on Dobro. The Artists & Their Sound: McKeon began playing mandolin by accompanying his father, a banjo player, at 4 years old in Poplar Ridge, New York. McKeon's writing is heavily influenced by his life in this small farm town. His musical skill is not only evident in his playing and songwriting but also in his craftsmanship as a luthier. His latest pride is the mandolin that he built for himself after the theft of one that he had played for over 20 years. It is this mandolin that he played on Weeds in the Ballast. McKeon is also sharing the genre, andfor four years has been running a weekly bluegrass jam in the city introducing new pickers to the music. McKeon is joined by Noecker, a graduate of New York University's music program. She spends most of her free hours studying the various styles and compositions of first generation bluegrass players, and is currently working on a method for analyzing the structure of bluegrass songs for possible future publication. The new album, Weeds In The Ballast, has been receiving considerable airplay on bluegrass stations such as bluegassmix.com. Here are a few new ones that require your total attention: Diana Ross: Reflections is a text with color pics from the good folks at New Haven Press, and it is the result of the hard work of the esteemed British writer Ian Phillips. The UK has remained steadfastly in Motown's corner since 1964, and Ross remained a chart-topper and headliner there even after things had cooled down for her in the U.S. in the 1990s. Reflections is a meticulous study of every album that Ross has ever participated in, starting with the 23 albums that were released as The Supremes and, in 1967, Diana Ross & The Supremes (I told you he was meticulous). Each recording is analyzed, and each track written about, with details of what was going on in The Supremes universe at the time of each release. The Beatles have numerous books like this out there, and it's about time that America's #1 recording act of the 1960s had one as well. Equal care and attention is paid, one by one, to the 32 solo albums that were released by a solo Ross after she left The Supremes. That makes a staggering 55 albums that Ross has participated in over five decades – and they're still selling and she's still touring. If you are a fan of the diva, as I am – or know someone who is – this is the stocking stuffer that you'll need not too long from now. Make your way over to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your favorite bookseller and do what must be done. There is a never-ending fascination with punk rock – old, new, and future. An independent publishing company, Microcosom, has released interesting titles dealing with the indie scene that gave birth to the genre. Underground: The

By Jimi LaLumia

Subterranean Culture Of DIY Punk Shows by Daniel Makagon goes into great detail on the touring aspects of punk and the history of going from house shows to the formation of a national network that developed through the years. It was a system that Green Day, Rancid, and Offspring participated in, as well as the hundreds of bands who continue to play to small but loyal audiences as they release 7’ vinyl singles and spread the

word through online “zines.” Cratedigger: An Obsession With Punk Records by Bob Suren is exactly what it sounds like it would be – the art of collecting of those 7’ singles and the underground pipeline by which they make their way from coast to coast. Suren goes from collector to band member to store owner, all powered by this particular hobby. In a time when mainstream music seems vapid to some, this is the other side of that coin. Back in the day when giants walked the land of the music industry, there was no giant more revered or feared than the one detailed in Allen Klein: The Man Who Bailed Out The Beatles, Made The Stones, And Transformed Rock & Roll. How's that for a book title? Yet, every statement in that title is true, and the details are flawlessly presented in this new book written by longtime industry expert Fred Goodman. If you're interested in how the music business really works, or would enjoy the incredible tales involving the biggest artists in the history of pop music, this is a must read. The Sam Cooke saga alone (and the game-changing tactics that Klein created on Cooke's behalf) is in itself worth the price of admission. The music industry is now light years away from the sometimes heavy hands of the likes of Klein, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. Study hard – there'll be a quiz next week.

Julie Belle:

Singer/songwriter Julie Belle has released a melodic new single, "Long Road," the second release from her new EP, You Were Younger, which was released in mid-September. "This is my favorite song on the EP," Belle said. "It was my favorite to record, and it's my favorite to listen to now. Ironically, it was the hardest to write ... It was like I had to sit and wait patiently while it marinated for a few years. And when it was time, the parts that were missing showed up all at once a couple weeks before I went into the studio to record it. The band really locked in on this one in the studio; everyone seemed to understand this song on a visceral level. It was worth the wait." Find Julie Belle online at juliebelle.com, and Twitter and SoundCloud; her new EP is available everywhere music is sold, including iTunes.

MEDIA Hot Stuff: The adult-themed Playboy TV network recently launched the docu-comedy series “Undercover” starring the hot (in more ways than one) comedian Kate Quigley; the show airs on Saturdays. On the series, the quick-witted Quigley serves as a tour guide and all-access host as on each show, as viewers go “undercover” to a different “adult” destination. "Not only is Kate Quigley hilarious, she's the only host out there who would let us set her on fire while she was wearing a leather thong. That's dedication to the job," said Wendy Miller of Playboy TV. Whether it’s fire play, fembots, giantess worship, or S&M dungeons, each 30-minute episode certainly isn't for the faint of heart: “My mind was blown about 200 times working on this show,” said Quigley. “I learned more than I knew existed about the world of sex, and we barely scratched the surface.” Quigley also is heading toward the “A-list” of popularity as a standup comedian, particularly in California clubs; she’s as remarkably silly as she is stunning. Shockingly, this new series is every bit as entertaining as anything the major networks have offered this season; clearly, PlayboyTV isn’t just Playmate videos these days. More Media: The alwaysenjoyable retro home video company Shout! Factory has recently unleashed some unique offerings on DVD and Blu-ray

home video, including “The Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special” starring Paul Reubens (which hits stores today, October 6), the seventh season of the 80s sitcom “The Facts Of Life,” the first two seasons of the debonair and dryly funny Roger Moore (later to become James Bond) as “The Saint,” and one of the 1970s few actualy hit monster movies, the vampirethemed The Return Of Count
