THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

BBQ Galore At City Joints: Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is a shrine to good taste and good bbq...They've been featured on nearly every Food Network Best of shows, and have expanded to 9 locations. For 20 years, I've been making the pilgrimage to the original in upstate Syracuse, which is host to a mix of bikers, college students, locals and visiting sports teams who usually make Dinosaur their go to place, even before checking in to hotels. In our area, we have a Dinosaur in Harlem, Newark, and since 2013, in Brooklyn. Located inside a 1941 building which housed a motor freight company, the Brooklyn location is class all the way...A huge place, the walls are covered with original advertising collectibles, some tin signs huge. Food portions are gargantuan, and outsanding quality outstanding..To kick off, we recommend the fried green tomatoes, crispy fried, coated in Pecorino Romano cheese and Dinosaur served with cayenne buttermilk BBQ ranch dressing. Or to take it up a level, try the Dino poutine, a French Canadian specialty that is a mountain of hand cut fries with beef gravy, homemade pinto cheese and a ton of pulled pork..The price a mere $7.95, enough to feed 2-3. Sides are great, especially the mac & cheese, the bbq beans with pork ends, and fresh cut fries. The combos are many, but we suggest the St Louis ribs (very meaty), pulled pork, and the exquisite brisket, only $21.95 including 2 sides and cornbread. Or the brisket plate, that includes burnt ends, house cured jalapenos and onions. Dinosaur also has music Thursday to Sunday. Check out why this place is a must stop on the barbecue trail. Service is outstanding. Dinosaur -604 Union St, Brooklyn 347-429-7030

Of late Queens has joined the bbq movement, with several fine places setting up shop. CityRib in Jamaica has tucked away an industrial looking bbq place inside the lobby of what was once the public library, with its classic architecture. CityRib has appetizers that include grits sticks, chili dusted calamari, and wings with choice of buffalo, garlic parmesan, teriyaki or sweet & sour sauce. They have real tasty baby back ribs, plus a real well-done brisket, but our favorite was the pulled pork sandwich, CitiRib topped with coleslaw. Another good choice is the combo that includes pork shoulder and baby back ribs. CityRib also offers an inspired Sunday Brunch...try the eggs benedict, 2 poached eggs on english muffin topped with hollandaise sauce and your choice of brisket, salmon, or traditional Canadian bacon. Or a bit of the South in your mouth with chicken and waffles or cornflake and coconut crusted French toast. CityRib has a dj on Friday nights, and jazz in the Fall. Also check in for several weekday super savings specials. It's located at 89-04 Parson's Blvd, Jamaica 718878-3599

Rounding out our trio of gems is Butcher Bar in Astoria. This place is a meat lover's delight. For an appetizer, try the Butcher Bowl, mashed potatoes, fresh corn, cheese topped with smoked pork or chicken. Everything here is outstanding, but brisket is the word. Winner of the 2013 Best Innovative Brisket Award, their brisket reeks of Texas. Beautiful, artfully cooked brisket, get yours with some fat and bark on it, super tasty and beautifully tender. Meats can be bought by the 1/4-lb and up and include brisket, pork, burnt ends and more. The burnt ends are amazing, with a spike of heat, but nothing too outrageous. The combos come with choice of sides (good fries) and slaw, and a delicious cornbread. Pulled pork was succulent, plenty of bark mixed in. A complimentary apple cake is brought out for dessert. Butcher Bar is located at 37-10 30th Ave Astoria. 718-606-8140

CASINOS & RESORTS

It is impossible not to enjoy yourself at theis delightfully anachronistic production. The old Ocean One/Shops At Caesars building at Boardwalk and Park Place has been renamed The Playground. There are still has plenty of retail stores, but there are a number of bars and nightclubs with different themes, such as a 1920s speakeasy and a New Orleans honky tonk in the back of the complex known as “T Street.” Tanger has expanded the number of outlet stores you’ll find at The Walk, the town’s main shopping complex. Outlet malls have popped up with great regularity around the country, but The Walk features factory stores from brands such as Chaps and Skechers. AC No Longer DOA: The past year hasn’t been easy for Atlantic City’s casino industry, as several showplaces closed. It wasn’t that the gamblers were getting luckier – it was ever-growing competition from nearby casinos in the greater Philadelphia area as well as Resorts World in Queens made it hard for some of this area’s casinos to cover high fixed costs. Atlantic City officials have recognized that their city could no longer place all of their bets on casinos for their economic well-being, and have worked fast and Tropicana furious at diversification. “AC” is suddenly hot again. The upcoming Miss America Pageant actually left Atlantic City for a few years, but now has returned. The Atlantic City Comedy Festival is slated for Columbus Day weekend. In addition, there are high level wine and food festivals scheduled throughout the year. Entertainment has always been a forte for AC. Name acts continue to play the casinos, while Madonna will perform at Boardwalk Hall on October 3. While name acts understandably bring out high rollers, the relatively inexpensive house shows that the casinos are known for are every bit as enjoyable. This past summer, The Taj Mahal featured mentalist Wayne Hoffman showing off his ESP skills in “Mind Candy,” while The Tropicana offered an old school magic revue, “Madame Houdini,” with female prestidigitator Hellevi Woodman in the title role. A favorite of this reviewer, however, was The Borgata’s “Burlesque,” still scheduled for Thursday nights through the fall. It offers 1940s-style risqué song-anddance numbers as well as R-rated comedy.

the surf and be comfortable through midOctober. It’s also hard to beat the low impact exercise from walking the five-milelong boardwalk. There is a new tram that runs along the boardwalk that charges $2. The Trump Taj Mahal no longer has ties to “The Donald,” though the Trump name is prominent there and on their website, trumptaj.com. The Taj is celebrating its 25th anniversary, but the celebration has been a bit muted because of both labor and economic survival issues. Financier Carl Icahn has agreed to become the new owner of the Taj if he can get union concessions. Business aside, “The Taj” remains the gem of boardwalk hotels with its spacious rooms and plentiful restaurants. Il Mulino offers top-notch Italian cuisine, while Robert’s should please any serious steak fancier. On the less formal side, The Hard Rock Café, famous for its ribs and rock music memorabilia, is hot, as is a longtime favorite, White House Subs, famous for its overstuffed hero sandwiches. Harrah’s, across town by the Marina District, also has superb restaurants. Sammy D’s is a great place to go for light fare such as salads or a late night dessert, or have a full dinner. Dos Caminos offers tasty authentic Mexican cuisine, including the healthy salmon a la plancha. You can get to the Marina District from the boardwalk via the small buses known as The Jitney. NGHTMRE. He produces trap and dubstep and all subgenres of trap and dubstep. He’s got everything from dirty dubstep to chill dubstep to trap originals and trap remixes. NGHTMRE is a very versatile producer and has a relatively strong following in the EDM community. However, he’s the type of person that deserves to have even more recognition than he does right now. From his Nuclear Bonds EP with Slander and his array of remixes of songs by Rae Sremmurd, Lookas, Victor Niglio, Porter Robinson, and so many more. His musical style will even go past trap and dubstep, experimenting Party with all types of sounds. That’s the Thieves kind of versatility that the music industry needs. Someone who can make good, popular music, but that doesn’t conform to any norms or produce what he is told to. One song I haven’t been able to stop playing is his “Dum Dee Dum” remix. When it hits, it just makes me feel some type of way. I expect to see some big things from NGHTMRE in the future. Last, but certainly not least, is my man Jauz. Just a couple of months ago I had no idea who this was. But I’ve seen his name pop up everywhere from festival headlines to getting pretty big now (at least in my new tracks and all over my Facebook eyes), yet the general public has no feed. Jauz, like NGHTMRE, is all idea who they are. Of course they’re over the place with his production. not getting played on the radio and Some songs have trap vibe, some they didn’t do a collaboration with Justin Beiber. It’s got an eerie beginning that gives an ominous feeling that just breaks into some gangsta trap music. His other hit, “No Heroes,” is something I would play as the last song in a set with the confetti canons ready to go, having the whole crowd pumped and jumping. Sorry, just my DJ fantasy coming to life right there. But either way, he’s gonna blow up at the end of this year and in 2016. He’s already mi=aking his way into festivals and I think he will soon be headlining the trap and bass stages. The next person I’d like to bring up to the plate is As Electric Zoo draws closer, the energy I feel in the dance community is definitely stronger. It is one of those premier events that just gets you in the mood for all types of EDM, everywhere. This has definitely passed on through me and I’ve been scrolling through all of my tracked artists on both Soundcloud, Facebook, and Spotify, looking for new kinds of music. Although most of my feed tends to be taken up by an odd assortment of deep house and mellow tunes, I do occasionally find a song that really gets me going. There are a couple of artists that seem to be

Straight Outta Compton

Starring O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr., Paul Giamatti, Carra Patterson, Elena Goode, Alexandra Shipp, Keith Powers Directed by F. Gary Gray Universal

When it began, many people didn't understand it; white people feared it (as usual); much of radio (and especially MTV) wouldn't play it – but when hip hop was new, it was the poetry of the streets, the first serious new wave in popular music since Elvis and The Beatles. There had been fleeting fads such as punk, glitter rock, a short Latin burst, and even a swing revival, but nothing took over the public consciousness like hip hop and rap – mainly because it was real, live, and utterly true, the very definition of soul. This new biopic recants the story of the formation of N.W.A., comprised of the soon-to-be legendary Dr. Dre, Easy E, MC Ren, DJ Yella, and Ice Cube. What made N.W.A. different is that as a unit, it was deadly serious. No beating around the bush, no phony love songs – straight from the rough streets of Compton, California, these young men offered no-holds-barred stories set to jarring rhythms that were as honest as a diary and as explosive as any music ever recorded. No more silence from an abused generation – these were artists out to set the record (and the world) straight.

This new film, brilliantly (and perhaps slightly too reverently, a minor quibble) directed by F. Gary Gray, centers on the lives of Cube (Jackson Jr.), Easy-E (Mitchell), and Dre (Hawkins), all of whom are so utterly believable in their roles that, like Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, it's easy to believe these are the actual hip hop stars instead of actors portraying them. Perhaps not enough time is spent on the music itself, but for once it's a film that humanizes musicians to the point that their lyrics, styles, and performances

seem all the more accessible and moving. Buried under rough language and terrifying violence are real people that are easy to care about, and here they are presented, warts and flaws and insecurties all out in the open. Expect a spike in N.W.A. albums and downloads as this movie, despite predictions, soared to the top of the box office charts on the weekend it was released. It's an intense, riveting experience, but for those who seek a real glimpse into music history, it's not to be missed.

Sleeping With Other People (September 11): Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”) and the alluring Allison Bree star as a pair of goofs who fall for each other while at the same time … well, see the title. Consider this a rom-com with a decidedly adult edge. Meet The Patels (September 11): It's a comedy, but also a documentary about a clumsily arranged Indian-American marriage. It’s seemingly unlike anything seen before, according to advance notices, which also hint that this may be one of the funniest films of 2015. Goodnight Mommy (September 11): Horror is all in the family: Finally released after floating around on the festival circuit is this lauded chiller about twin boys that begin to doubt that the woman who returns home after cosmetic surgery is actually their real mother. Megaspooky, ultra-violent. Austrian; subtitled.

He told me that he plans to pursue more mainstream acting roles, but has no plans to leave the WWE. While some have complained that the Yankees have retired too many uniform numbers and given out too many plaques in Monument Park (Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte received honors two weeks ago), at least the team honors its alumni. The New York Mets don’t do that as often as they should. Speaking of the Mets and Yankees, the September 18 through 20 “Subway Series” at Citi Field will certainly have a lot of meaning for both teams as each is vying to win their respective division titles. It seems as if the Yankees always get the better of the Mets when the money is on the line. You might remember that the Mets went into a tailspin after they dropped two out of three games to the Yankees in April, after the Mets had won 11 straight games. Contending for a postseason berth is uncharted territory for most of the Mets, and the series will be as good a barometer as any as to whether they will be playing in October. My guess is that if they get swept by the Yankees, it will deflate them and ignite the floundering Washington Nationals. On the other hand, if they can take two of three from their city rivals, it will propel them to the NL East title. A paradox for Mets fans is the better that outfield Yoenis Cespedes performs, the harder it will be for the Mets to sign the impending free agent.

A prominent baseball columnist that I greatly respect told me off the record that he doesn’t believe that the Mets have the financial resources to sign him to a long-term deal. That will certainly leave a bitter taste in the mouths of fans.

engineered for heavy oil. From Motiv: “The Primal Rage Remix provides more length than the Jackal, and a very aggressive backend motion ... The impressive dual-density Impulse V2 core gives the Remix a high RG and high differential. The high RG allows the ball to push deeper down the lane for a more devastating back end, while the higher differential creates the track flare needed to make a bold move on heavier volume patterns.” The ball also feature's Motiv's Raw Fusion Hybrid Reactive cover stock, tuned with a 4000 Grit LSS finish. All in all, this looks like a heavy oil monster well-suited for accomplished bowlers. Forza Redline: We've already seen this yellow rock at local pro shops and in league

action, and it's certainly one of the most eye-catching new balls, especially as it rolls down the lane. This one could easily end up at the “A” or benchmark ball in many player's arsenals. Again, a successor: “It provides more length than the solid Forza, yet is still offers more control than the Octane …The powerful Torx weight block in the Forza Redline delivers a 2.50 RG and .051 differential on the 15# model. It revs up easily and is capable of generating over 5” of track flare … The Forza Redline is equipped with new Helix Pearl Reactive cover stock to provide length and retain energy on medium oil. This performance feature enables the ball to drive through the pins with maximum power … Being a benchmark ball, competitive bowlers will certainly use the Forza Redline to gauge the lane pattern.” Check out Motiv products at your pro shop. LIGBT Summer Stars: Joe Kingston, 28, of Ronkonkoma won his second LIGBT tournament title in a month with a victory at AMF Plainview on August 14. Bev Parker of New York City defeated four shootout finalists on August 2 at South Levittown Lanes to win her first LIGBT title and the $1,000 top prize. Leslie Farrell won $1,000 for her victory at the LIGBT tournament on August 23 at AMF East Meadow Lanes. The LIGBT is gearing up for its fall season; its eighth campaign promises to be its biggest yet. Find all the information at ligbtour.com.

Theater at Westbury appearance, when he was on the road supporting a new album called Off The Grid: Doin’ It Dylan. “There's a TV show called 'Hell On Wheels,' and we were asked to do some music for it,” said the everpersonable Daniels last year. “Because of the time period of the show, we were limited to acoustic instruments like they had in the 1800s. We had never done acoustic music before; the band sounded so different and so great. So we decided to do a whole album like that – and who better to go to than the endless well of Bob Dylan material. Plus, I was a huge Bob Dylan fan and I wanted to do a tribue to him, anyway. It was just a very opportune time to do this.” Much of Daniels' canon – “The Devil Went Down To Georgia,” “Still In Saigon,” “In America,” and so many

passed since GWAR was awoken from the prison of their Antarctic slumber in 1985. In those three decades, they have shaped the music and culture of mankind using broadswords and guitars, carving the human race to more closely

others – are nearly on par with Dylan, but in Daniels' own southern sound and style. Through the years, Daniels has been unwaveringly patriotic, performing overseas (three times in Iraq) and writing and recording songs in tribute to our troops; his “The Last Fallen Hero” was a post 9/11 classic. His stance on backing the US and our military is one that Daniels speaks of without reservation. “I have a very deep feeling for the military,” said Daniels in our interview last year. “There are no two ways about it: America is the greatest nation that ever existed. We don't realize what a great nation it is; even the other nations in the western world, they don't have everything we've got. They don't have all the freedoms that we have, things that we take for granted too often. We have the best of all worlds here.”

resemble their demented visage and psyche. The Scumdogs will celebrate their 30th anniversary (or as the Romans would call it, their XXX anniversary) by releasing a box set showcasing the musical and artistic genius of this misfit group of extraterrestrial mutants that world has come to love almost as much as they fear.” Also on the bill are the controversial Butcher Babies, who somehow manage to be utterly sexy and downright ominous at the same time. Hailing from Los Angeles, Butcher Babies offer an explosive stage show featuring two spectacular female lead singers. We offer you this: Google “Butcher Babies” and click “images.” Not a band for the faint of heart ... or the weak of libido.

Fall Film Festivals Galore: From Gore To Pups By Brian Stieglitz When New York film comes to mind, the first event many fans think of is The Tribeca Film Festival. However, Long Island is the home of three internationally acclaimed festivals, which get bigger every year: The Hamptons International Film Festival, The Long Beach International Film Festival, and The Gold Coast International Film Festival all unreel this fall right in our backyard. This year, The Hamptons International Film Festival is making some changes, with new co-chairmen named in Long Island native (and A-list actor) Alec Baldwin and Randy Mastro. In addition, signature programs are coming, including a Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights Program that underscores films with messages about social justice for those who cannot speak for themselves. In the past, films at The Hamptons Festival went on to win Best Picture at The Academy Awards – a distinction few other festivals can boast. This year’s festivities are October 8 through 12 at 337 Newtown Lane in East Hampton; for more information, call (631) 324-4600, or visit hamptonsfilmfest.org. Long Island’s city on the water features its fourth annual Long Beach International Film Festival this year. August gave us a glimpse into what this event has to offer with “Shorts On The Beach,” the annual event exclusively featuring short films. This fall, the Festival continues with receptions, international spotlights, industry seminars, and countless ways for the public get involved in the craft of filmmaking. The Festival begins September 24 and runs until Septmember 27, with four screening venues throughout Long Beach and the Village of Rockville Centre. For more information, visit longbeachfilm.com. For the fifth time, The Gold Coast International Film Festival will continue its tradition of hosting a festival rooted in Long Island. Each festival includes workshops, parties with a gala, and opportunities to speak with renowned film experts. Produced by The Gold Coast Arts Center, the festival hosts events and activities throughout the year that lead up to the event date. This year’s Festival takes place November 9 through 15 at venues throughout northwestern Long Island. For more information, call (516) 829-3536, or visit goldcoastfilmfestival.org. Outside Long Island, film fans can find a treasure cove in Manhanttan’s niché film community. This fall boasts a number of festivals in New York City that focus on alternative themes, specific genres, and even the concept of virtual reality. Fans of all things macabre and spooky can find an event to call their own with The New York City Horror Film Festival. Founded in 2001 by Michael J. Hein, this festival has been growing in notoriety with appearances by the late Wes Craven (director of the classics Nightmare On Elm Street and The Last House On The Left) and Rob Zombie (rock artist and director of Halloween ‘07). The event occurs every November at The Tribeca Cinemas, located at 54 Varick Streetin New York City, with this year’s event running from November 12 through 15. For more information, write to Ronnie@nychorrorfest.com, or visit nychorrorfest.com. This next event takes 3D past its limits as New York’s fifth annual Food Film Festival does things differently. Here’s how it works: Festival attendees watch a movie featuring a certain type of food or dish while enjoying that same dish as prepared by renowned chefs. Past experiences included the film Ramen Dreams, with Chef Keizo Shimamoto, creator of the Ramen Burger, cooking for the audience. The event strives to give back by benefiting hunger-related philanthropies, including The Good Food Project, The Billion Oyster Project, and The Food Bank For New York City. The festival takes place from October 22 through 25 at locations to be announced. For more information and more food porn, write to debpressman@gmail.com, or visit thefoodfilmfestival.com. For the first time ever in the U.S., moviegoers can attend a festival with canines as the stars of the event. The inaugural Dog Film Festival will feature films that highlight the connections between dogs and humans; its founder, Tracie Hotchner, strives to extend the efforts made by her talk show pseudonym, The Radio Pet Lady. Hotchner hopes this festival will allow others to embrace dogs the way she does. In addition to movies about dogs, the event also consists of an opening night gala and “Pooch Party.” Attendees and their dogs are welcome to celebrate the start of the festival and walk its green carpet. All events take place at The Peter Norton Symphony Space at 2537 Broadway, with opening night on October 2, and closing ceremonies on October 3. For more information on this event, write to info@dogilmfestival.com, or visit dogfilmfestival.com. At The Kaleidoscope Virtual Reality Festival, attendees can step inside a movie – literally. By putting on Oculus VR headsets and being equipped with Gear VR equipment, moviegoers will be able to experience films made by the first pioneers in the field of virtual reality filmmaking. Founded in May by Rene Pinnell and Michael Breymann (technical director for Industrial Light And Magic”), the goal behind this festival is to use virtual reality gaming to create a new language of entertainment. Kaleidoscope will travel across America’s major cities, coming to Manhattan on October 6 (location to be announced). For more information on the festival and this unique virtual reality project, write tol hello@kaleidovr.com, or visit kvrff.com.

PERFORMANCE Photo: The Movielife by Brian Stieglitz

Today’s Mixtape Festival • The Emporium • Patchogue The crowd was in rapture as fans started to scream and dance while the pop/punk band A Loss For Words hit its first note. Throughout Today's Mixtape Festival's fourth summer event, the bands played with a fervent energy that seemed

The Movielife

to stand out from other punk shows. With A Loss For Words playing its last Long Island show, hardcore punk act Kill Your Idols playing its first show in eight years, and Long Island natives The Movielife playing its first show in more than a decade, it was clear that this festival would have a lot of heart behind it. The Long Island punk scene usually boasts intimate shows within a tightly knit community. Singers jump into the crowd, fans crowd surf to the stage, and

the music feels like it is being played to you and not at you. This festival seemed to epitomize that vibe as singer Andy West of Kill Your Idols jumped into the crowd and was smothered by fans, who shouted his lyrics with him. Matty Aresenault of A Loss For Words spoke about how the hardcore scene is less about brutal breakdowns and harsh vocals and more about the messages behind the lyrics and how the musicians feel or think. This may sound like generic frontman preachment, but the evidence was delivered in the passion displayed at the Festival. It was as if every band – pop punk, hardcore, and everything in between – felt comfortable in their niche. As a result, so did the audience. A band highlighted at the Festival was The Movielife, which announced that this was their first show in more than 13 years, and it won’t be their last. The band is led by frontman Vinnie Caruana, who is also the lead vocalist of I Am The Avalanche. Although both bands sound similar with driving, aggressive verses behind catchy choruses, there was a surreal feeling when Caruana came out and started singing older songs. It was like traveling back in time to when The Movielife was a thriving punk band, but on this night they proved that they continue to remain relevant. – Brian Steiglitz

Royal Blood • Citi Field • Flushing The cliché “break a leg” took on a whole new meaning for Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters during their recent world tour. While on stage in Sweden, Grohl broke his leg during a nasty spill, and has since been forced to wear a leg brace. While some performers would throw in the towel, Foo Fighters just kept going on with their tour, with Groh sporting a full leg cast. We’re sure you’ve heard about their recent Citi Field show – but did you hear about the opener? Royal Blood left its stamp on the stadium as they laid down some good, old fashion blues. This fairly new duo from England is utterly unique – neither is a guitarist. Mike Kerr shredded on the bass with variety of techniques and styles, as Ben Thatcher’s heavy, hard-hitting druming added perfect rhythm to this dynamic duo’s performance. While Royal Blood’s style clearly is heavily influenced by the blues, there is a more than a hint of alternative/ grunge in their songwriting style. Kerr confidently brings forth simple

but intriguing verses with crisp melodies, followed by catchy but s incere choruses with hooks. During this opening slot, the duo performed songs from their self-titled album (“Come On Over,” “You Can Be So Cruel,” and “Better Strangers”); the no-holds-barred songs showed the band’s potential as songwriters and performers. Thatcher fills the empty voids for each song, leaving no space for the ears to wander; even as Thatcher slows down, Kerr’s raw, grungy bass picks things up. “Figured It Out) (recently featured in the new film version of Entourage) proved to be a crowd favorite, while “Little Monsters” showed Kerr’s strength in harmony and riffs. “Ten Ton Skeleton” and “Loose Change” were rocked before the duo ended with the perfectly themed exit music “Out Of The Black,” which earned an arena rock rarity: a standing ovation for an opening act. Clearly, this is just the beginning for Royal Blood. – Text & photo by Christopher Jon Smaragdas

Studio News Rapture Sound Studio

Your humble scribes at Studio News simply adore summer, and we're bummed that it's about to end – so at this time, we'll soothe our souls by checking out the every-bit -as-hot area studio scene: New to our listings is Rapture Sound Studio in Syosset, which features a variety of rehearsal rooms to choose from that offer drum kits, high-end speaker systems, mics, and stands all included. The studio recently reported a special: book two hours and get the second hour half-off, or book three hours and get the third free. Call Rapture Sound Studio at (516) 433-0070. Rapture opened in June; owners Chase Zabatta and Mike Oliveri created Rapture after having difficulty finding a spot where their bands could

practice. The struggle was finding a place that was convenient, affordable, and allowed music to be played. A musician and audio and recording engineer with a background in engineering from Quad Studios, Zabatta has played in rock and metal bands throughout Long Island on guitar and bass, as well as singing lead and backup vocals. Zabatta and Oliveri also have aspirations to build a state-of-the-art recording studio. “We created this business in order to provide quality spaces for talented musicians to freely explore their sound,” said Zabatta. Gizmos, Gadgets, & The Latest Trends Gear Heads The Apple Watch: The New Tech Toy’s Hottest Apps

There's no stopping the innovative, cutting-edge technology of Apple – but even after its megahyped release, even the staunchest Apple fans are wondering if the company's new Apple Watch is really the new “next big thing.” Clearly, the Apple Watch has drawn both raves and pans upon its recentl release. Sales have also flagged greatly after a robust debut. We'll take no sides in this great debate; however, here's the latest news about the product: According to a recent study from Horizon Media's Finger on the Pulse — the agency's proprietary online research community, comprised of 3,000 people reflective of the U.S. population — close to two-thirds of people 18-65 (62 percent) say they aren't interested in owning the Apple Watch. According to Horizon Media, interest in the Apple Watch lags that of the company's other recent innovation, Apple Pay. The current study finds that just two in 10 (21 percent) say they are interested in owning the new high-tech timepiece. As a comparison, earlier Horizon research found 50 percent of smartphone users expressed interest in using Apple Pay when it launched – more than twice as many as are interested in Apple Watch now. Only 17 percent of those surveyed are neutral on the prospect of owning an Apple Watch, suggesting there aren't many fence-sitters to convert to purchasers. "The results surprised us because new Apple products are typically in high demand," said Kirk Olson, VP of Trendsights at Horizon Media. "It's true that consumers often don't see the potential of new technologies before experiencing them first-hand. But the high level of negativity is a clear signal consumers are questioning the value of yet another connected device, even if it is from

Apple." In fact, while the hefty price tag for Apple's sleek timepiece range is the top deterrent (73 percent), the biggest challenge may be consumers' lack of interest in owning another connected device. When asked for the top five reasons they aren't interested in Apple Watch, more than half of detractors (53 percent) say they simply don't want another connected device, while nearly four in 10 say owning an Apple Watch would be "just another technology distraction." Finger On The Pulse empowers the agency to connect directly with 3,000 consumers, diving beneath the surface of beliefs and behaviors to uncover critical insights. New Apps For The Apple Watch: If the Apple watch is for you, there's going to be a wealth of apps designed just for it … Apalon Apps, a top 10 developer of iOS applications worldwide, aannounced the release of several of its most popular apps for the Apple Watch, including Weather Live, NOAA Radar Pro, and Speak & Translate. Those who have missed director Christopher Guest's droll hit comedy films (For Your Consideration, A Mighty Wind) bemoan the fact that he hasn't released a new picture in some time, but that's about to change: Guest will release a new comedy film, Mascots, during 2016 on Netflix, the streaming video service that's becoming a ratings force to contend with in original programming and movies. The new effort by Guest will detail the events at the (fictional) “8th World Mascot Association Championships,” where a group of men and women in “big heads and flurry suits” compete to win “the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award” and be crowned the world's best mascot. A major artist such as Guest working with Netflix is yet another feather in the cap for the video streaming company, where the quality of its new programming has best first-rate. As for Mascots, think Best In Show – with people inside animal suits … While we're on the subject of dogs: The EScore national media research company recently conducted a poll of children and adults to determine their favorite animated canine character, and the results were a bit of a shocker: Dug, from the aging Disney film Up, scored

adult group, in descending order in the Top 15 from #2, were Snoopy, ScoobyDoo, Brian Griffin (“Family Guy”), Gromit, Tramp, Pluto, Lady, Underdog, Goofy, Toto, Lassie, Clifford The Big Red Dog, Beethoven, and Pongo (“101 Dalmatians”). Learn more at epollresearch.com … Strange gets stranger: Former “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Norm MacDonald has replaced Darrell Hammond of “SNL” under all that breading … uh, makeup, as the new Col. Harland Sanders in the ubiquitous Kentucky Fried Chicken TV ads. From all accounts, this one of the oddest ad campaigns in recent history;

Dug

Greg Creed of Yum Brands, which owns KFC, told Food Business News that one and five people “hated” Hammond’s commercials. It's obvious that KFC is trying to get people to notice their aging fast food chain by any means possible – and with good reason, with such companies as Chick-fil-A and Chipotle are beginning to dominate that marketplace … Norm MacDonald More from “SNL” cast members: The SundanceNow Doc Club's Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers, and Bill Hader, also formerly of the late-night NBC staple, have guest curated a collection for Doc Club entitled "Armisen, Meyers, & Hader Favorites." The collection is available to stream now at DocClub.com; their show “Documentary Now!” premiered on IFC during August ... Another former “SNL” star, Rachel Dratch, made a riotous guest appearance on a recent edition of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.”

WHEELS & DEALS Lisa Polizzi: A Television Debut

Rock singer Lisa Polizzi, the frontwoman of one of Long Island's most popular club and cover bands, has been chosen to appear on a new TV program, “Star Of The Day,” which (at press time) was scheduled to premiere on September 19 at 5:30 pm on FOX. The full-throated vocalist reported that she will have the opportunity to perform with guitarist (and former New York Yankees player) Bernie Williams and his band; the program will feature celebrity judges, and will be hosted by longtime area newsman Ernie Anastos. The Lisa Polizzi Band will be part of a packed bill on that same date at Revolution in Amityville; Dave Alvin will host a showcase that also will feature Ionia and Suburban Decay. Polizzi and her band have performed at most of the top venues in the area during the past two years, and will return to The Lounge at The Space At Westbury on October 8. Find Lisa Polizzi at Facebook and ReverbNation.

Parsonsfield Launches University Café Season

Nationally touring Americana band Parsonsfield returns to the area with a new name on Sunday, September 20 at 7 pm at The University Café at Stony Brook University. Advance sale tickets at $20 are on sale via gpjac.org/UCafe.html through September 18; tickets at the door are $25 (cash only). Information at universitycafe.org, or (631) 632-1093. Many area music fans may remember this band from its previous name, Poor Old Shine, when it played the “Sunday Street" series in March 2014. Though they have changed their name to Parsonsfield, this is the same Americana band from Connecticut, infusing a rowdy rock spirit into their bluegrass and folk influences. The band consists of Chris Freeman (vocals, banjo), Antonio Alcorn (mandolin), Max Shakun (vocals, pump organ, guitar), Harrison Goodale (bass), and Erik Hirschmann (drums).

Baldwin native Melanie Martinez has made an extraordinary entry onto the charts with her debut album: Cry Baby arrived on the Billboard 200 at #6, while also coming at #5 on the “Top Albums” chart. The new album follows the 20-year-old Long Island native’s 2014 breakthrough, The Dollhouse EP. Cry Baby is highlighted by “Pity Party,” which debuted at #2 on the iTunes Store’s “Top Alternative Songs” before becoming a worldwide Spotify success, reaching #10 on the U.S. Viral 50 and #13 on the Global Viral chart. In ddition, the “Pity Party” companion video was recently tagged #hitoftheweek by MTV Hits, guaranteeing the week’s most plays on the network. The clip – conceived and directed by Martinez herself – has now drawn more than 5.5 million views and counting at her official YouTube channel. Martinez' debut concert on September 11 at Highline Ballroom in New York City has already sold out. More: melaniemartinezmusic.com. He's a poet … music composer … university lecturer ... and first and foremost, a singer and entertainer. The Iranian-born pop star Shahkar makes his Long Island debut on Saturday, September 19 at 9 pm at The Space At Westbury. For tickets and performance information, log on to thespaceatwestbury.com. Living in Tehran, at the age of 15 Shahkar found solace in writing poetry and eventually, in music. Without any formal instruction, Shahkar learned to play the guitar, piano, drums, and percussion. He found sanctuary in studying Political Geography, Urban Planning, as well as Music Composition. He immersed himself into these fields while producing several music albums

and poetry. In 2002, Shahkar received his Doctorate degree in Urban Planning with high honors. He was officially announced by The Iranian Department of Education the youngest student in the Doctorate program. But even before that time, his music success redefined him. In 1996, he founded the first fusion music concert even though performance was banned; in 1997, he released his classic The Lady Of Orient album, but he found hielf banned from performing live because of his country's laws and regulations. Despite his tribulations, Shahkar forged on, writing books and speaking at universities and colleges. Later music releases have included Your Magesty; during the past two years he has performed with top symphony orchestras around the United States.

RHYTHM TRACKING Punk, Punk, Punk! Something wonderful has happened: Ginger Coyote's hard work and perseverance in gifting the world with Punk Globe Magazine has resulted in a new book delivered by Teddie Dahlin and New Haven Publishing. It's The Best Of Punk Globe Magazine by Ginger Coyote, and almost instantly it has zoomed to the top of various best-selling charts on Amazon.com, where everyone is looking to buy a copy. The initial reaction has caused the book to sell out and get re-stocked several times already. This means that if you don't have one yet, finish reading this and then get over to Amazon, and join in on Ginger-Mania. Ginger's saga is detailed in this book, from moving at a young age from middle America to the West Coast, finding her way and finding a voice with the earliest print version of Punk Globe, to represent who she is and the scene that she came to represent – her real family, as it were. The covers of Punk Globe are lovingly curated, and the transition from a print to an online publication is detailed and explained at the beginning and the end of the book. All the colorful excitement in-between will keep you busy for weeks, as a who's who of the scene is interviewed, or actually serve as the interviewers. Ginger does a good deal of the interviewing in an enjoyable manner, while others, such Miss Guy of The Toilet Boys, interview iconic figures such as Debbie Harry. An extensive interview with Jayne County is performed by The Gypsy Poet; it's the first

By Jimi LaLumia

interview in the book, followed by Ginger's great session with Captain Sensible of The Damned. The book provides a treasure trove and timeline of amazing interviews with Pauley Perrette, Boy George, Bebe Buell, and Randy Jones of Village People. It's an endless array of tastemakers expressing themselves in a more comfortable setting than a typical mainstream magazine format. The Best Of Punk Globe Magazine is an absolute legacy item as far as the history of the U.S. punk and alternative scenes are concerned, and I know I will spend an inordinate amount of

time in the days to come, poring over the pages againand again. If you are or have been invested in the scene that Punk Globe represents, you most certainly owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book today. Sincere congratulations to Ginger Coyote on a lifelong job well done. In related punk news, the first indie label compilation album covering the 70s NYC rock scene, Various Artists – Max's Kansas City 1976, will be released early in the new year by the UK-based Jungle Records, marking the 40th anniversary of this historic, classic disc.

Her ‘Storm’ Brews Up Heat
