It Must Be Spring: Tolentine Flea Events

T

It’s such a huge event it draws fans from Long Island and Brooklyn: Each summer Saturday, a huge flea market takes place at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, technically listed at 150-75 Goethals Avenue in Jamaica – though most regulars will tell you it’s on Union Turnpike in Flushing, which is the other corner of the site for this huge weekly event. This expansive flea market offers virtually everything you can think of – used electronics, new and vintage clothing, jewelry and crafts, records and DVDs, car accessories, tools, watches, off-brand and drug store-quality health and beauty aids – and the prices, as quoted by the event’s fans, are “out of this world.” Sure, there is lots of over-used crap that should rightly for the dumpster, but some buys are truly worth seeking out. A smaller version of the flea market usually runs on Sundays. – Bob Smith event. Photos (cover and aritcle) by Lori Stoll

he Madison Theatre at Molloy College in Rockville Centre presents one of the most lauded musicians of the modern jazz era, Peter White, on Saturday, April 25 at 8 pm. Tickets are now on sale; call the Madison box office at (516) 323-4444, or log on to madisontheatreny.org. White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. White, from England, learned his first chords on an acoustic guitar, then bought his first electric guitar in his early teens and studied the recordings of the reigning guitar gods of the day – Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. But his

musical aspirations ultimately veered back in an acoustic direction following an accident that doomed his beloved electric guitar. The axe was destroyed in a fire, one that White’s younger brother Danny – an aspiring pianist – accidentally started. “The funny thing is that Danny didn’t actually admit to setting that fire for at least 25 years,” sayid White. “I had been kind of obsessed with

the electric guitar at that point in my life, so that episode kind of forced me to go back to playing the acoustic. In retrospect, that’s a good thing.” White’s interests after the accident shifted more toward the music of acoustic artists Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell. Plugged or unplugged, he had decided by his late teens that music was his calling, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort in England when he was 19 years old. Barely a year later, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band; he worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of Year Of The Cat, the lead single from which became a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the

album marked the beginning of a 20-year association with Stewart. In that time, the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs, including Stewart’s 1978 hit, “Time Passages.” White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous (French for “wake up,” a title chosen by White in honor of his French mother). The album included several unused songs that White had written for Stewart, and it became a favorite among contemporary jazz radio stations. He followed with three records on the Sindrome label – Excusez-Moi (1991), Promenade (1993), and Reflections (1994) – before signing with Columbia for the 1996 release of Caravan Of Dreams. He maintained an ambitious release schedule through the ‘90s and beyond, but also found time to appear on recordings by many of his friends, including Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Jeff Golub, Lee Ritenour, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, and others. White released the album Here We Go in 2012; the 11-song set, produced by White and DC , features guest musicians. Smile, released this past fall, is the final CD in White’s trilogy of albums consisting entirely of his own material. White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep the experience fresh. “I’ll play a live show, and someone will come to me afterward and say, ‘Oh, I loved this CD,’ or ‘This song helped me through a bad time’ ...That’s what keeps me going – the idea that people out there really care about what I do, the idea that I’ve made a difference for someone.” The promoter of this concert and the “Smooth Jazz” series, Alan Stein, recently announced that three more concerts in the series have been booked for The Madison Theatre at Molloy College beginning this fall. Keep an eye in Good Times and the Madison website for updates.

However, things seem to have changed, and for the better: Corporately, AMF now seems to be welcoming back leagues. During the past year, local AMF centers have modernized, installing new scoring systems as well as giving many houses a fresh coat of paint, new menus, and other spiffy features. And yes – AMF centers are party central, with “lights out” and party bowling being the most prevalent game there. Serious bowlers aren’t left out; centers such as Commack, Babylon, and Smithown are often the sites of competitive tournaments. Rolling & Rockin’: LI’s Top Bowling Centers

here's no question about it: The sport of bowling, somewhat maligned and faded during the past couple of decades, is back in a big way. Some aspects of the sport aren't quite what they used to be – the PBA and league bowling, as two examples, now enjoy only a fraction of their former 1970s and 1980s popularity – but during the past three years, there's been an uptick in both interest in the sport as well as the numbers of people visiting bowling centers. So why is bowling hot again? We can think of three factors: Modern bowling centers. Forget the drafty, dank, and dark “bowling alleys” of the past – many of today's centers are bright and inviting destination spots, perfect for date nights or family events. It's a safe and fun way to let

Luxury & Fun: Bowlmor Long Island your hair down after a busy work week. Jason Belmonte. The Australian professional bowling sensation rockets the ball down the lane in a unique twohanded style, and is clearly one of the most emulated athletes of our time – he's proven that there's no “wrong” way to bowl, despite what old-timers and jealous former pros might believe. The lanes are now filled with two-handed bowlers, as well as young bowlers who don't put their fingers in a bowling ball at all. It's Affordable. Every product has gone up in price in recent years, but most centers offer attractive discounts or “party packages” that combine food and bowling at a reduced cost. In addition, modern bowling centers are havens for corporate get-togethers, kids' birthday parties, and even business meetings in centers that have conference rooms or large lounges. So what are you waiting for? Here's an overview of the area bowling scene, as well as what to expect as you lace up your shoes and try rolling a few games. Better yet, join a league so that bowling becomes an important part of your leisure time. You’ll make friends, have fun, and get healthy in the process.

San-Dee Lanes, 342 Hempstead Avenue, Malverne, (516) 599-1134 What probably is Long Island's smallest bowling center remains one of its most loved: It's just 16 lanes in a traditional bowling setting. What San-Dee lacks in frills it more than makes up for in charm; some recent upgrades make the small center as modern as any other, but with a certain “old school” appeal that keeps families and leagues coming back year after year. Specials: Attractive discounts for “Rent-A-Lane” and on Friday nights; for more, log on to sandeelanes.com.

South Levittown Lanes, 56 Tanners Lane, (516) 731-5700 Many are still mourning the demise of North Levittown Lanes, but the South Levittown location has picked up the slack admirably. The center is a home for competitive and league bowlers, but also offers “Rock 'N Glow” and other family themed features and a host of attractive special events. One of Long Island's most popular centers just keeps rolling on. Specials: “Dollar Bowling Days” are offered Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 pm; “early bird” and unlimited bowling specials are continually offered; log on to levittownbowling.com. Herrill Lanes, 465 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park, (516) 741-8022 Walk into this center and it's an obvious 1970s vibe; the AMF machines used above the pin decks are the same that were featured on several seasons of TV's “Celebrity Bowling” decades back. It might be a dean of area houses, but this meticulously clean and busy center is a favorite among league bowlers and weekend “Rock 'N Bowl” keglers alike. From birthday parties to competitive tournaments, Herrill is an important part of the social fabric in the New Hyde Park /Williston Park / Mineola area. Leagues flocked here during the forced big chain exodus two years ago, and they’ve stayed and scored.

Herrill Lanes

Specials: Herrill's “Bowling NY” card offers bowlers discounts at varying times; there are “Good Old Days” specials on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday from 9 pm to 2 am, with $1.25 for games and selected food items (with a $10 cover charge). Learn more at herrillanes.com.

Port Jeff Bowl, 31 Chereb Lane, Port Jefferson Station, (631) 473-3300 Many visitors might not think of scenic Port Jefferson as a haven for bowling, but Port Jeff Bowl does as exemplary a job of attracting children, families, and collegiate-aged bowlers as any center in the region. The center is the perfect mix of party and participatory, with tournaments and leagues going hand-in-hand with “Rock 'N Bowl” and children's leagues and parties. Specials: Offers, discounts, and special events are listed at portjeffbowl.com. The Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday unlimted “Bottomless Bowling” special is easily one of the area's best values on open bowling. Woodmere Lanes, 948 Broadway, (516) 374-9870 This popular center has been a Five Towns favorite for more than 50 years, an incredible accomplishment. This is a unique house in that it has a spacious bar and a professional performance stage adjacent to the lanes, making it perfect for parties and music-themed events. Yet, the center also boasts a thriving league attendance, thanks in part to its modern scoring system and stringent lane conditions. And we’ll state it again: Woodmere boasts one of the best cheeseburgers served anywhere. Food goes a long way in bringing in customers, and Woodmere is among the “tastiest” places. Specials: Details on its popular specials – Xtreme Bowling, “The Works,” and Tuesday night unlimited bowling – can be found at woodmerelanes.com.

Film Reviews

The Wrecking Crew

Produced & directed by Denny Tedesco Magnolia Pictures

When most people hear the term “wrecking crew,” they think of demolitions. Ask those who were involved in the recording industry in the 1960s and early 1970s about “The Wrecking Crew,” the odds are that you will hear about the great studio musicians who played on the records of nearly everyone who was anyone on the pop charts. Just exactly who was a member of The Wrecking Crew is debatable; among the bestknown were Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, and Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack. The vast majority of the musicians, such as drummers Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine, keyboardist Don Randi, bassist Carol Kaye, and guitarists Al Casey, Bill Pitman, and Tommy Tedesco, were content to stay in the shadows collecting session recording checks while avoiding the travel that many of their colleagues had to endure. Denny Tedesco (the son of Tommy Tedesco, whose rapidfinger Spanish guitar licks can be heard on many Gary Lewis & the Playboys records) produced this fine documentary about his father and his colleagues. It has taken Denny Tedesco almost 20 years to get this documentary released. In 1996, he staged a reunion of some of the more prominent members of The Wrecking Crew to sit around a table in an Los Angeles recording studio to talk about the good old days. The reason for the lengthy delay was not because of lawsuits, but rather on account of the hefty licensing fees involved with using even snippets of the many hit recordings on which the studio musicians played.

It’s a joy to hear Tommy Tedesco reminisce about the “Something Stupid” recording session that featured Frank Sinatra and his daughter, Nancy, as well as Carol Kaye showing how she improvised the bass line intro to the Sonny & Cher classic “The Beat Goes On.” Denny Tedesco was able to get the normally reclusive leader of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, to speak at length about how The Wrecking Crew was able to play every note that

he heard in his head, and recreate them in recordings. Sometimes the process was quick, but in the case of creating “Good Vibrations,” it took six months. Tommy Tedesco didn’t mind, since he notes nonchalantly that “Capitol Records was picking up the tab.” The documentary makes a big distinction between touring musicians and those who worked strictly on session recordings. The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine said that he and his band mates did not take umbrage to The Wrecking Crew doing the heavy lifting on their albums since The Beach Boys were so busy on the road that it would have been impossible for them to be in a studio

6 • Good Times Magazine - April 21 - May 4, 2015

tackling new material. The Monkees’ Peter Tork admitted that it bothered him that he was told to sit and watch The Wrecking Crew recording Monkees tracks at the time, but with age comes wisdom; Tork confesses that he now understands why these guys, many of whom are now in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, were used. On the other hand, Herb Alpert said that many of the members of his old group, The Tijuana Brass, always resented that they did not have anything to do with their records except pose for the album covers. Although not well-known to the public, The Wrecking Crew recorded with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin to Jan & Dean and The Grass Roots, and were well-compensated. In one of the sadder moments of the documentary, Blaine talks about how at one time he owned a Rolls-Royce, a 23-room mansion in Hollywood Hills, and a yacht, and then lost it all through a series of divorces. Blaine’s finances became so precarious that he had to work as a security guard in Scottsdale, Arizona because session work had dried up as rock bands demanded to record their own material. Record companies, fearing backlash from increasingly more sophisticated music fans, were eager to have bands record their own tracks. This film nicely follows in the footsteps of last year’s Academy Award-winning documentary about background singers, 20 Feet From Stardom. This may be the golden age of pop music film docs, as All Things Must Pass, which looks at the rise and fall of Tower Records, also recently had its debut at the South By Southwest pop culture festival in Austin. – Lloyd Carroll

SportsBeat Chris Mullin

It’s the question that’s been on many a sports fan’s mind: Did St. John’s University reach out to arguably its greatest player, Chris Mullin, to become its next basketball head coach while Steve Lavin was still in charge? It seemed just a little too convenient that Mullin accepted the job five days after Lavin was dismissed. Despite the doubts, Red Storm fans shouldn’t be too concerned about Mullin’s lack of head coaching experience. Given his stellar NBA career and considerable experience as a pro basketball executive, it should be a seamless transition. One of the knocks on Lavin was that he did not recruit in St. John’s own backyard, and didn’t kill himself developing relationships with local area high school basketball coaches. High School, should improve the Red Storm’s ability to lure local talent. Fran Fraschilla, the ESPN analyst who coached the Red Storm for two seasons in the late 1990s, told me at the National Invitational Tournament media luncheon that he thinks that Lavin, who was also an ESPN analyst before taking the St. John’s job five years ago, should take a year off from coaching and return to the TV ranks. The NIT is now being run by the NCAA, whose headquarters is located in Indianapolis, also the site of this year’s Final Four. Every NCAA official that I spoke with at the NIT media briefing, including many conservative retired basketball head coaches, went on the record to state that they were angered at Indiana Governor Mike Pence for signing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which appeared to give license for Hoosier businesses to discriminate against gay and transgendered individuals. Anyone who has attended a Brooklyn Nets game has undoubtedly watched the act of 79-year-old Bruce Reznick, better known as “Mr. Whammy.” Whenever an opposing player is about to shoot free throws, Mr. Whammy runs up to the stanchion and starts flailing his hands and arms in a hexing motion hoping to break the concentration of the man at the line and cause misses. Three weeks ago, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers complained to NBA security about Reznick. It’s doubtful that James was worried about his scoring being adversely affected by Bruce, but rather that his actions could open the door for other fans to rush to the court. Not surprisingly, LeBron’s clout ruled:According to Jason Schott, who is the Nets beat reporter for BrooklynFans.com, Whammy has been tethered to his seat since that Cavaliers-Nets

Duke Wants The Duke Again: From the PBA's Jerry Schneider: Prior to making his PBA50 Tour debut in the Pasco County Florida Open to kick off the 2014 PBA50 season, Hall of Famer Norm Duke was quick to point out that starting another new chapter in his legendary career on the so-called “PBA senior tour” was something he was going to take very seriously. It wasn’t going to be some kind of leisurely hobby. He’s lived up to his word: In 2014, Duke went on to become only the second player to earn PBA50 Player of the Year and PBA50 Rookie of the Year in the same season, winning two titles, including the Senior U.S. Open. The 2015 PBA season marks Duke’s 33rd season in PBA competition. His career dates back to 1983 when, at age 18, he won the Cleveland Open to become the youngest player ever to win a PBA Tour title. Since, he has amassed a PBA career that puts him among the PBA’s elite. “You know how it is when you’re young; you think you’re going to take the world by the horns,” Duke said of his early days on Tour. “But I quickly learned that as good as I thought I was, I had a lot to learn, not only about bowling, but life in general … I learned some lessons along the way and am pretty proud about the body of work I’ve been able to put together on the PBA Tour. I hope I can continue to build it on the PBA50 Tour.” At press time, it was not known if Duke will appear at the Johnny Petraglia PVL Open the week of May 2 at Farmingdale Lanes. LIYBT Results: Harris Mirza and Adam Zimmerman emerged as champions at the LIYBT tournament event on March 29 at AMF Plainview Lanes. cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie, and of course, Darrelle Revis ... The Jets announced that they will no longer hold summer training camp in upstate Cortland. Instead, they will remain in their Florham Park headquarters, probably because they have a new GM in Maccagnan along with a new head coach, Todd Bowles, and staying put would make things easier. Hopefully, Long Island officials will reach out to the Jets to return training camp here.

There have been rumors that the Jets are interested in coming to SUNY Farmingdale. Track star Usain Bolt can rival NBA stars when it comes to endorsements. He is the spokesman for Puma’s Ignite line of running shoes, and his likeness lined the back wall of the Javits Center where Nissan set up an exhibition area for the just concluded New York International Auto Show. As per tradition at the Show, Toyota showed off its official Yankees bullpen car. Rolls-Royce displayed its latest Ghost model; its rich leather interior smelled just like a new baseball glove. On the Saturday night before Opening Day, ESPN debuted its latest “E:60" documentary, “The Dark Knight Returns,” an hour-long profile of New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey. Jeremy Schaap did a fine job interviewing Harvey and others, including manager Terry Collins and Harvey’s agent, the inimitable Scott Boras. Interestingly, both Mets CEO Fred Wilpon and his son, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, refused to appear on the show. My guess is that they did not want to get caught on camera answering questions about Harvey’s high profile off-the-field activities such as dating the hottest models, dining at the trendiest restaurants, as well as wearing threads from the most expensive boutiques. Here is a suggestion for an easy and fun road trip: The Mets will be playing the Phillies in Philadelphia the weekend of May 7. The conventional wisdom is that the Phillies will be awful this year, and that means that getting a ticket to a game at beautiful Citizens Bank Park should not be a difficult task. In addition, the New Jersey Turnpike is now a 12lane highway until Exit 6, so hopefully the

days of those tiresome Great Adventure traffic jams will be in the past. While in Philadelphia be sure to try some of the city’s restaurants as well as visiting its cultural institutions such as Independence Hall, The National Museum of American Jewish History, The African-American Museum, and The National Constitution Center. The annual ESPN Day at the Tribeca Film Festival takes place on April 25. Among the documentaries that will be shown include a look at former NFL tight end and current CBS NFL pre-game personality Tony Gonzalez; drag racing in Castro’s Cuba; and a profile of bullfighter Antonio Barrera, who has been gored by those big bovines than any other toreador in history. Clark’s Desert Boot, a favorite for hikers, is now 65 years old. The Rascals disbanded in 1972, and Cavaliere's solo career has been going strong ever since. He now calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He’s also finishing his memoir, and has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. Visit his website, felixcavalieremusic.com, to learn more.

89 North Music Venue, Patchogue May 1 at 7:30 PM 89northmusic.com (631) 780-8992 This novel concept has performed everywhere from theaters to clubs in the region during the past several months: 45 RPM warms up the crowd with the songs from the AM band (including stuff most bands won't cover, from Three Dog Night to Andrew Gold to one-hit wonders such as Player), then Wonderous Stories takes over with their Yes-inspired “FM band” progressive and harder rock tunes from throughout the decades – it really is something for all.

ammy Adams, clearly one of the hottest pop/hip hop sensations of the moment, visits Long Island on Friday, May 1 at 8 pm to headline The Paramount in Huntington. Doors open at 7 pm for the general admission show; as with most Paramount events, there will be a Founder’s Room after-party. For tickets and more information, log on to paramountny.com. The last five years have been a wild ride: Sammy Adams, from Boston, caused quite a stir in 2010 when his debut album topped the online hip hop charts the week of its release. Samuel Adams Wisner was a senior at Trinity College in Hartford when he decided to inject some attitude into Asher Roth’s hit “I

Love College.” With the results posted online under the name Sam Adams, his answer song, “I Hate College,” made the rapper an Internet star in 2009. On the strength of his independent album

Boston’s Boy and mixtapes such as Party Records and Into the Wild, Sammy Adams built his rep through touring colleges and clubs across the country, and signed with RCA Records in 2012. Since then, the singer, songwriter, and producer has been in the studio with such collaborators as Pharrell Williams, Ryan Tedder, Mike Posner, and others, working on his debut album. “Pharrell gave me the best advice about making an album,” Adams said. “He said, ‘Just be in the moment with your songs

because if you try to write a song to be a hit two months from now, the culture can change,’” adding that “I want to make music that’s universal, that anyone can relate to. “I’ve had my biggest success so far with pop songs and it has inspired me to write super-catchy hooks that people can jump up and down to. It feels authentic to where I am creatively at this point and I’m excited to continue to explore and play with this kind of music.”

Studio News The Pandemic

As we write these words, there is still some snow on the ground, blighting the edges of shopping centers and lawns and reminding us of the cold, cruel winter that just passed (with honorable mention to that plethora of pot holes that never seem to get fixed). for their painstaking recreations of the songs (with emphasis on the later works never performed live by The Beatles). Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it; the reviews of the live experience have been beyond stellar. The Fab Faux are a labor of love that was born in 1998 when Will Lee (who’s played with all four Beatles), the famous bassist for Paul Shaffer’s CBS Orchestra on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” decided that he was determined to organize the greatest Beatles band without any props (sans period wardrobe, fake accents, wigs) and focus on the intricacies and soul of the music. and producer Rich Pagano, guitarist Frank Agnello, and keyboardist/guitarist Jack Petruzzelli. All five principals contribute vocals, making the Faux’s soaring harmonies as resonant as their multiinstrumental chops, which are further enhanced by the four-piece Hogshead Horns (featuring Blues Brothers, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and “SNL” band alums) as well as The Cremé Tangerine Strings. “It’s not just a cover band,” said the Faux’s Pagano. “This is the greatest pop music ever written, and we’re such freaks for it.” Vivino added, "It’s constant archaeology.” "Whenever anyone saw The Beatles perform it was just the four guys," Lee continued. "You never saw them on stage with a sitar or a string section. We have all that stuff." Learn more about these accomplished musicians at thefabfaux.com.

The Chainsmokers

What's going on, ladies and gentlemen? Hopefully you are very well, as I have been, too. If you haven’t been up on your game, that’s what I’m here to help with. I’ve been itching to go to some shows lately and there are finally a few in the area that may be of interest to you. Make sure you get to check out The Chainsmokers with Grandtheft and Bebe Rexha at Terminal 5 on Friday, April 24. If you haven’t been to Terminal 5, this is your chance to check out the iconic venue and have some fun while you’re at it. If you’re not feeling that show, fear not. On that same night you can swing on over to Webster Hall and check out Madeon performing with The M Machine. And then, how can anyone forget about the upcoming festival season! Two big festivals are coming up during Memorial Day weekend and you’re unfortunately going to have to choose between the two. That’s right, I’m talking about EDC New York at Metlife Stadium and Mysteryland USA in upstate Bethel Woods. I won’t go into details Madeon

about the lineups as this information is easily accessible with a simple Google search but what I will say is these are two very different environments. One takes place at the home of the New York Giants and the other is in the middle of the woods with a camping environment available. Both have very solid lineups. If you want the more urban environment with the carnival rides, EDC is the place for you to go. If you want a more relaxed environment where you can rage by day and chill out by night, Mysteryland might be your calling. I would like to just remind you that Mysterland is a 21+ event, so if you

haven’t quite gotten there yet, you might be out of luck. I hope you guys are craving some music as well because I’ve been downloading a load of stuff that I’m glad I can share with you. Now I know this isn’t the newest release, but if there are any Barely Alive fans out there, you’ll be able to back me up when I say that Torrent This EP is a work of epic proportions. He basically took a bunch of really awesome songs and made them more awesome. He took old classics such as “Better Off Alone” and put his signature dubstep twist on them and turned them into a completely new piece of art. And since we’re on the topic of epic remixes, the artist Eptic has one of his own. Take the craziness that is “Hostile” by Skism and Laxx and give it to Eptic to just take control. What’s produced is something that I can’t seem to stop listening to and that I can’t wait to play at my next show. Now, if I mentioned “Song 2” to you, you’ll probably think of the band Blur initially. However, when you hear that from now on, I want you to think of DJ Bl3nd and Mr. Black. They took a rock classic, kept the part that everyone loved, and turned it into a big room banger. Say what you want about big room, but this song has quite some merit on its own and is the right combination of everything that makes a quality electronic remix. And if we wanna stay on the topic of old songs with a new twist to them, I want you to think back to “Apache” by Sugar Hill Gang. A timeless classic, no? I’m sure everyone would agree. Mix that with a solid Melbourne bounce drop and you have a hit for sure. Kastra figured this out and made his bootleg of “Apache”, which does exactly what I have described to the greatest extent. C’mon, it’s a fun song that just got made more fun. How could you disagree? Well, I hope you all take my advice and have a good upcoming couple of weeks and get some new music on that iPod. Feel free to contact me at richiegtechno@gmail.com. Until next time, keep raging my friends!

other through the decades? Eddie A Secret Kiss: There is now a film Van Halen and David Lee Roth? It making the rounds on the Internet of seems to be part of the group process, Kiss performing in 1979 that right up to and including current teen features the flareup and walk-off by megastars One Direction. Regardless, original drummer Peter Criss. This no one does lifelong feuds and public sort of thing is of never-ending interest to fans of rock groups with legendary in-fighting. Just the other day, I was embroiled in a fan conversation concerning George Harrison and Beatles “leader” Paul McCartney, which was included in the band's last project, the Let It Be film. McCartney has words Lambert & Stamp about Harrison's playing, and George displays of such better than our very replies: "I'll play it however you like, own Kiss. Rock & rollover, baby! or I won't play at all if you prefer!" I went into shock the first time I saw Lambert & Stamp: A new, soon-tothat in a theater in 1970, because we be released documentary, Lambert & all envisioned The Beatles as being Stamp, is about the two gentlemen best buds and equals, even after Yoko who started the UK-based Track Ono entered the picture. Only later Records label and brought The Who did we discover how the other three to prominence as a result of their rebelled against McCartney as a unit. efforts. Advance trailers look "Motown 25" was recently released astounding; it's a flashback to the with great success as a single and most magic period in rock & roll – multi-DVD set, but what Supremes the 1960s British Invasion – and we'll fans really wanted to see is still under get to see the music business, in that lock and key – the onstage "push and era, as a “wild west” where there shove" between Diana Ross and Mary were no precedents, and thereby no Wilson during the group's reunion rules. There are so many turned out quite well for all parties others: How about Keith Richards concerned. The one major down note and Mick Jagger constantly at each for Track Records, which may or may not be included in the film, is the The Comedy late-70s UK punk era, when they Central signed Johnny Thunders & The Roast Of Heartbreakers and released the iconic Justin album LAMF. The album was Bieber released with a muddy mix, the label was going under financially at the time, and the greatest punk album of that era was lost for decades until UK Jungle Records rescued it 30 years later. A Bieber Blast: If you missed the recently aired Comedy Central Roast of teen tycoon Justin Bieber, try to find a way to see it (it’s available for streaming). It is one of the funniest, most contemporary events I can recall from recent days, and is an accurate time capsule for pop culture at this moment in time. Also, congrats to long-suffering Barry Manilow, who finally opened the closet door and married a man. Going to the chapel of love! Photos courtesy Sony Pictures Classics, Comedy Central

Christine Sweeney & The Dirty Stayouts

Well Worth The Late Nights

Who: During the past several months, Christine Sweeney – both as a solo artist and with her band, Christine Sweeney & The Dirty Stayouts – has arrived as a most intriguing area-based original music artist, featuring an earthy, organgic sound and displaying stunningly advanced songwriting acumen. The Artists & Their Sound: The band’s bio: “The Long Island music scene has proven to be a force of its own, seemingly alive and organic. Christine Sweeney & The Dirty Stayouts is a band that shines in the chaos. Their fun and catchy debut record, Lune et Lumière, was released in August 2014 and has been touted by critics and musicians alike as a fresh and comprehensive tour of the pop mind of one of Long Island’s rising songwriters. “Band members seemed to fall into place after Sweeney’s first EP was recorded in 2012. The initial push to create the band started with Mike Walsh (bass) encouraging Christine to find a group to help foster her sound. David Ferro joined the two with his bluesy style on keys and guitar. Samantha Kantor, Christine’s former roommate and singing partner from college, brought her talents to the mix. The two sing in such tight harmony that sometimes differentiating their voices is a challenge. The later addition of Hugo Lopez and his jazz style of drumming brought their sound to the next level. The sometimes gritty and raw vocals of Sweeney have been compared to Melissa Etheridge and Grace Potter, but also have the versatility to dance and flutter into something more sensual and delicate, like that of Norah Jones, with thoughtful

and honest lyrics. “Since the band’s inception, the five piece has been met with rave reviews on their expert stitching together of blues, rock and pop. ‘People are singing praises of the album, and we’re so happy,’ said Sweeney. We want to make everyone groove and enjoy these tunes as much as we do.” The album is available on Spotify, iTunes, CDBaby.com, at live performances, and at Looney Tunes Records in West Babylon. “Their live show is where Christine Sweeney & The Dirty Stayouts shine with their energy and honest performances. “ Our Take: We actually heard of Sweeney and her tuneful band through old fashioned word of mouth, and judging from their recorded work, this is clearly a performer and act with a big future both locally and on the national level. To Learn More About The Artists: Sweeney is all over social media: Instagram/twitter: @Sweenmusic; YouTube.com/ChristineSweeneyVIDS; Facebook.com/ChristineSweeneyMusic; and ChristineSweeney.com. Upcoming shows: May 22 at The Way Station in Brooklyn; June 4 as part of a packed bill for Patchogue Theatre’s “Live In The Lobby” series; June 6 at Seaford Relay For Life (5 pm), and July 10 at Grounds & Sounds Café in Stony Brook.

96 Tears The New Single From

JIMI LaLUMIA

Released by Chrome Orange Music/Media

BITS & PIECES Christina Perri

Christina Perri:

To Join Sheeran On Tour

Talk about a major double-bill: Christina Perri will hit the road this fall as the special guest on the second leg of Ed Sheeran’s North American headline tour. For ticket information and tour updates, visit christinaperri.com/tour. It has been quite a year for Perri since the release of her second album, Head Or Heart. In addition to high profile TV appearances, performances, and live events, Perri has been on her biggest worldwide headline tour to date, including sold out shows in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Perri also did a string of dates with OneRepublic as special guest on last summer’s “Native Summer Tour,” and joined forces with Demi Lovato for a run of dates on the North American leg of her blockbuster fall tour. “Human,” the first single from Head Or Heart, was certified RIAA platinum for sales now well in excess of one million.

The Damnwells:

Back For More

Indie rock band The Damnwells have released a new selftitled album featuring the original four band members via Rock Ridge Music. This is the first album since 2006 to include the original band lineup: Alex Dezen [lead vocals, guitar, piano], David Chernis [lead guitar], Ted Hudson [bass], and Steven Terry [drums/ percussion].) Since 2006, Dezen continued to make Damnwells records with a cast of musicians to fill in the blanks – but for the new album, he and his former comrades decided to “get the band back together” for real and joined producer Salim Nourallah (Old 97s)

The Damnwells

in the studio. They recorded at the intimate Tree Fort Studios in Austin, TX, where they sought, as Dezen says, to “capture as much live as possible.”

Pop’s Biggest Star?

Ed Sheeran:

Speaking of Ed Sheeran, as these words are being written it seems quite clear that the young artist standing alone on a stage holding an acoustic guitar might be the biggest attraction in the music world. Sheeran's early dates on his upcoming tour are selling out fast – tickets for his May dates at Forest Hills Stadium are already sold out – and, as noted above, he's added dates for fall. Sheeran’s summer tour is already proving to be a phenomenal success with most dates selling out in a matter of minutes, including Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Newark’s Prudential Center, and back-to-back nights at The Hollywood Bowl. The North American dates are part of Sheeran’s highly successful worldwide tour which culminates with three sold out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium. Sheeran is still riding high with the chart-topping success of his current

single “Thinking Out Loud.” Already one of the biggest songs of 2015, “Thinking Out Loud” has earned Sheeran the highest charting of his career at multiple formats, going to #1 at Top 40, Hot AC, and Adult radio, as well as holding the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a staggering eight consecutive weeks.

Snoop Dogg

A ‘Bush’ Of New Sounds

Snoop Dogg: Snoop Dogg will release a new album, Bush, on Columbia Records this spring. The new disc is produced by Grammy Award-winner Pharrell Williams, and is a creative partnership with Doggy Style Records and i am Other. Dogg recently unveiled a taste of the first single, “Peaches N Cream,” in a short clip in advance of the official music video. The “teaser” debuts on multiple digital platforms including the newly unveiled site, FollowTheBush.com. The historic pairing between longtime friends Dogg and Williams came after multiple successful collaborations in the studio, which started more than a decade ago. The duo made a pact with each other to restore the “missing” vibe in today’s music by creating songs dedicated to a “better present and an ideal future.” Channeling retro-futuristic funk topped with a mix of R&B and pop, Bush blossoms with “a funkadelic glow,” said Snoop Dogg, “totally different than anything either of us has ever done.” In a recent interview with Power106 radio in Los Angeles, Williams boldly proclaimed: “Snoop’s album is better than mine.”

Everything’s Coming Together

Liz Longley:

Liz Longley, the self-titled fourth studio album from the singer/songwriter and dual-instrumentalist, was released in March to much critical acclaim. The new songs on this album grew amidst a period of transition and travel in Longley’s life; crafted while moving between Boston and New York before finally settling in Nashville, the city which has its own unique influence on the sound of this release, these numbers pack the punch of pages torn from Longley’s journal. The growth in Longley’s songwriting is evident on this new release; she penned all 11 tracks, each connecting with the listener on a personal level, the music perfectly pairing vulnerability with enough mystery to allow listeners to find their own meaning. The album was produced by Gus Berry in Nashville and features sequencing and several new mixes from Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Sarah Jarosz).
