For many of us finding a good vehicle is like finding a place to escape mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or even socially. Maybe you enjoy local drive-time get-a-way’s. Maybe you enjoy listening to peaceful music while riding. Maybe spending time with your favorite person while riding on a long winding road going nowhere fast is your thing. Whatever kind of drive time escape you choose to indulge in, it’s important to nurture your mind, body, and spirit by giving yourself an outlet that’s outside of the norm A simple break from routine activities is my version of balance and peacefulness because it’s all about the driving experience for me

In 2019, Mercedes-Benz took a hit and its thee-year streak as the top luxury automaker in terms of sales in the U.S. was ended by its German archrival, BMW. However, it looks like the Three-Pointed Star is looking to take the crown back from Bavaria with a commanding lead in the recent sales charts. According to Automotive News, quarterly sales reports from luxury brands have already come in, except for Jaguar Land Rover. With the numbers in, Mercedes has widened its lead over BMW, picking up from a strong start in Q1 2020.

Back in April 2020, Mercedes reported 67,746 units sold in the U.S., excluding the vans, while BMW sold 59,455 vehicles. In Q2 2020, the Stuttgart-based automaker tallied another lead over BMW at 59,461 Mercedes units sold versus 50,957 BMW cars sold. This ballooned Mercedes’ lead over BMW by as much as 16,795 units at the halfway mark of the year. To nobody’s surprise, Mercedes’ source of income for Q2 2020 is its lineup of crossovers/SUVs. The GLEClass led the charts with 9,500 units sold, followed closely by the GLC-Class with 9,461 deliveries. The E Class remains as the best-selling non-SUV/crossover model in the MB range with 6,857 units sold in Q2 2020.

Behind BMW, Lexus follows closely in Q2 2020 sales race with 50,456 units sold. Tesla ranks fourth with 36,800 units delivered, while Audi concludes the top five for the U.S. market 34,843 sold units.

As expected, sales numbers were down for the first half of 2020, primarily because of the coronavirus pandemic that struck and still wreaking havoc in the country.

2022 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring

The Honda Civic has a reputation built on 50 years of affordability, efficiency, and durability, My daughter currently owns a 1996 Honda Civic. To this day she still own it and she’s not giving it up for anything. It’s now 2022 and everything we came to expect from the last Civic (exceptional acceleration and fuel economy, well-balanced driving manners, spacious interior, above-average build quality) has been elevated with cleaner and classier looks, improved tech, and the overall increase in refinement. It’s a class leader. Throughout its 11 generations, the Civic has generally followed a pattern of a revolutionary redesign followed six years later by a more evolutionary approach.

As the all-new, 11th generation model, the 2022 Honda Civic falls into the evolution category. The engine choices and interior dimensions are basically identical, the driving experience isn't terribly different, and the overall shape is similar. It looks more expensive than it is. Most of that goes for the also-new 2022 Civic Hatchback. The interior is similarly more premium in appearance, if not plastics quality, with a striking new design that manages to simultaneously declutter the cabin and improve the infotainment system with extra physical buttons. I love the retro-inspired air vents? The Civic looks better inside and out, remains a terrific compact sedan to drive, and its surprisingly spacious cabin and trunk provide impressive practicality.

This is still an economy car, so there's plenty of hard plastic about (center console, door sills), but what you see and touch most come together in a tasteful, modern design that looks (and feels) like it belongs in a much pricier car. Honda’s tradition is going strong. This 11th-generation Civic gets a thorough makeover inside and out. Some may say the new Civic's more conventional design is boring and there’s little new under the hood, where you'll still find a

base four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged four-cylinder that provides quicker acceleration. Civic does have a few new additions. On the top-level Touring and Si trims, for instance, there's a wireless charging pad, a digital instrument panel, and a 9-inch touchscreen with additional wireless functionality for CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. I was impressed with the 2022 Honda Civic.

The Honda Civic hatchback is an excellent buy. It offers admirable performance, a refined and roomy cabin, and plenty of connectivity and safety tech to please most buyers. While it's slightly more expensive than most competitors, you'll find that it offers great value due to the amount of standard features for the price.

I tested a Civic Sport Touring hatchback, which has the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. started out slow, but power grew steadily and quickly. The Civic's continuously variable automatic transmission is welltuned and responsive when you need a burst of speed. The available manual transmission has an excellent clutch, making it easy to use. Around turns, the Civic is stable, sporty, and entertaining to drive. The tires squealed but maintained grip on the road. Braking performance is strong too. Civic is effortless to drive. The Civic's suspension does a pretty good job of smoothing out bumps in the road. The front seats are supportive, and the leather upholstery breathes well to help keep you cool on hot days. The seats lack adjustable lumbar support, so beware if you have a bad back.

The climate control layout is a clear improvement over the previous generation's setup, with great vent coverage for the cabin. Road noise is noticeable at any speed and can be rather intrusive on coarse surfaces. Wind noise is thankfully more subdued, and the rest of the interior feels solidly constructed and free of vibration.

The Civic hatch has an attractive cabin design. All controls are within easy reach and intuitive to use. It's also roomy the front can comfortably seat taller and shorter passengers equally well. While there's plenty of rear

Outward visibility is aided by narrow front roof pillars and sideview mirrors that are mounted on the doors, freeing up your view out front. The roofline causes you to doublecheck over-the-shoulder views, and the back window is a bit short, but the multi-angle rearview camera helps you spot anything that might be behind you.

The Civic's infotainment screen is mounted near the top of the dash, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road for too long to adjust the radio or available navigation. It's intuitive to use and quick to respond. The graphics look a little dated, but the map functions just fine. Our Sport Touring hatchback trim had the larger 9-inch screen, while lower trims get a smaller 7-inch version. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard. While both systems are wireless on the Sport Touring trim, we found using a USB cable provided quicker connection speeds.

Honda's advanced driving aids work well for the most part. We did experience a few false alarms and overzealous

shoulder room and legroom, the sloping roof means taller passengers may find headroom lacking. Otherwise, you won't have much trouble with space in the Civic.

mild hump that leads into the rear seating area. One thing we really liked about the previous Civic was its clever interior storage. Honda implemented more traditional storage spots for this new Civic, a small step back in our opinion. Still, the center armrest bin can hold a good amount, the cupholders are large, and a rubberized charging pad in front can help keep your phone from sliding around as it's charging.

The Civic offers three anchor spots for front-facing child safety seats, and the main lower anchor points are easy to access. Larger rear-facing infant carriers will likely compromise front passenger space a little, but this is true for most cars in this segment.

The EPA estimates the Civic Sport Touring hatchback (which has the turbocharged engine) will get 35 mpg in combined city/highway driving. This is a few mpg better than what most other rival hatchbacks get.

The Honda Civic hatchback may cost a bit more than the competition, but its pleasing performance and many standard features justify the added cost. In interior quality, it comes close to matching the Mazda 3, the class benchmark. It has the kind of refinement that we would have expected from the more expensive Honda Accord. We recommend stepping up to at least the EX-L trim for the hatchback since it comes with the more powerful and efficient turbocharged engine.

systems when lane markings were poor, but these occurrences were infrequent. The adaptive cruise control sometimes brakes a little late, but it generally works well to reduce the burden of driving in stop-and-go traffic.

The storage is good. The Civic hatchback's trunk can hold up to 24.5 cubic feet of cargo, which is above average for the class. The hatch offers plenty of space since the wheel wells don't intrude too much into the cargo area. You can fold down the rear seats to provide more space. Unfortunately, the surface isn't completely flat due to a

Honda's warranty, which lasts for three years/36,000 miles (basic) and five years/60,000 miles (powertrain), remains fairly unremarkable compared to what other manufacturers offer. But the company builds a good product that generally holds its value well. Roadside assistance, available for the first three years/36,000 miles, is standard fare for this class. This little Honda hatch has a good amount of performance. The sporty handling lets more spirited drivers actually have some fun rather than feeling soft or disconnected. Usually, these abilities are reserved for the more performance-focused models like the Civic Si and Type R, which tells you how good this car is. This Civic replaces its predecessor's youthful design with a simpler and more elegant style inside and out, eliminating a lot of the clutter and fake vents, which makes it more appealing to a broader audience. The interior also has a better, more premium feel to it than previous years.

2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Limited AWD

The Santa Cruz was more than a delight to drive. The Honda Santa Cruz combines compact-truck utility with funky looks and a fun-to-drive attitude. It's a bit pricier than its main rival, the Ford Maverick, and the styling may not be everyone's choice, but it has a list of features and a premium interior that certainly justifies the bigger price tag.

The 4-door Santa Cruz shares most of its underpinnings, powertrain, front-end sheet metal, interior layout, and unit-body construction with the also all-new Hyundai Tucson crossover SUV. The Santa Cruz also adds the lively 2.5-liter turbo/8-speed dualclutch powertrain option from the Santa Fe Calligraphy. The defining characteristic of the Santa Cruz is its 4foot-long open bed that takes the place of the Tucson's enclosed cargo area. The small truck's turbo powertrain and polished ride impress.

While J.D. Power classifies the Santa Cruz as a midsize pickup, Hyundai is marketing it as a Sport Adventure Vehicle and targeting buyers who wouldn't necessarily be interested in larger, more rugged truckbased offerings or any sort of truck at all.

The Santa Cruz is the newest example of halfcar/half-truck models. Designed for personal, recreational use, the Santa Cruz stretches 13.4 inches longer bumper to bumper than the Hyundai Tucson SUV. Still, it is nearly a foot shorter overall than the Nissan Frontier and almost 1-1/2 feet shorter than the Toyota Tacoma. It's configured to be easier to park and

get better fuel economy than other midsize pickups that have grown in size and weight in recent years while maintaining an open bed for toting dirty or bulky items. And because it's based on a unit-body crossover SUV rather than a truck frame, the Santa Cruz is designed to offer SUV-like driving dynamics and the smoother ride and sharper handling associated with them.

The Santa Cruz is available with a choice of two 4-cylinder engines that can be configured with frontor HTRAC all-wheel drive (AWD). For 2022, the Santa Cruz lineup includes base SE, mid-level SEL, turbocharged SEL Premium, and range-topping Limited trim.

Because the Santa Cruz is based on the Tucson, it will be offered with the same extensive infotainment and driver-assistance technology. Another plus is the dramatic front-end design and wing-shaped LED running-lamp lighting signature, carried over from the Tucson, that's integrated into the parametricsegmented grille. Truck shoppers have had two broad categories to choose from in recent years: midsize trucks and full-size trucks. But now there's now a third alternative: compact trucks. And one of two new pioneers for this class is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. If you don't want all of the full-blown capability and expense of a midsize or full-size truck, the new Santa Cruz is worth checking out.

2022 Lexus RX 450h AWD F SPORT

The h is for hybrid. The Lexus RX hybrid has been going strong for 15 years. Today's RX 450h is a descendant of the original RX 400h, the first luxury hybrid vehicle when it debuted for the 2006 model year.

The 2022 Lexus RX 450h is more powerful, refined, and efficient than that original, and it's popular enough with Lexus customers to have outlasted several competitors that have vanished from the market.

Given the RX hybrid's steadfast availability over the years, perhaps it comes as no surprise that few changes accompanythefive-passenger midsizecrossover SUVfor the2022modelyear.Freshexteriorpaintcolorsandanew interior hue make news, and foglights are now available as a stand-alone option for 2022.

The limited-production RX 450h Black Line returns, but Lexus plans to build only 400. Lexus has been in the hybrid-making business for quite some time, so it's no surprise it makes some of the best.

The RX 450h's bold styling could be a polarizing point for buyers, but its combination of impressive attention to detail, interior appointments and practicality makes it an undoubtedly attractive proposition in the luxury SUV scene. Our only real reservation: It underperformed its EPA fuel economy estimates in our testing.

Drive Time of The RX 450h drive?

The RX 450h feels good on the road, with easy effort steering and even quicker pickup than the non-hybrid models. And thanks to a well-tuned brake-by-wire

system, the RX 450h is capable of surprisingly smooth stops, which can be a real weak point for hybrid vehicles. It's not only quicker than the non-hybrid RX 350, but it alsodeliversasmootherdrivingexperienceoverall.That's a double win.

Our instrumented test numbers confirm the 450h is sufficiently quick, clocking 60 mph from a standing start in 7.3 seconds. But that does put it a few car lengths behind Volvo's potent hybrid SUVs. Suspension updates forthe2020model yearmake the RX 450hfeel abit more agile and nicely counteract the added weight from the batteries and hybrid components.

Comfort of The RX 450h?

Comfort is a RX hallmark,and the 450h largely continues to deliver on that promise. The front seats are wide and accommodating, but the cushions feel a bit flat. The second-row seats are pretty comfy too, and they have the ability to recline. The suspension does a good job of taking the edge off rougher road surfaces and bumps, but the hybrid's added weight produces more residual motion after the 450h hits a bump, making for a floaty ride. The cabin is well insulated from traffic and wind noise as well astiredrone,andthesilenceofthehybridpowertrainonly adds to the serenity. You'll never have to raise your voice to have a conversation.

2022 Genesis G70 RWD 3.3T Sport Prestige

We've always loved the G70 because it went up against the Germans and held its own while, at the sametime,notlookinganythinglikethem.Butthere was still something about the styling that was missing as if it was lacking a truly eye-catching theme. All that has changed now for the newly refreshed G70. It takes cues from the rest of the lineup with its quad parallel head and taillights, and the result is echelons better. There are two different turbocharged engine options and all-wheel drive is also on the table. We drove the potent 3.3T in rear-wheel drive configuration and Prestige trim.

There's so much to love about premium sedan that drives as good as it looks. Especially in rear-wheel drive configuration, the G70 shines with its balanced dynamics andquick responses. Sport+ mode really extracts the most out of the engine and transmission for serious delights. It's balanced, tactile, and plenty quick, too. The G70 reminds why we love rear-wheel drive sport sedans with just the right amount of power.

Ride Quality: The ride is very comfortable but still properly firm for a luxury sports sedan. It manages bumps with aplomb without feeling disconnected. You get a great ride and true connection with the road.

Acceleration: 0-60 comes in a quick 4.5 seconds, which outpaces most of the competition, and Sport+ mode does a great job of holding it into gear. The 8-speed automatic transmission downshifts very well.

Braking: The brakes are very good but could use more bite to match the 3.3T's power and handling. It's progressive and has good modulation.

Steering: The steering has some decent effort to it, and there's some good feedback coming through.

Handling: The optional Sport Package in our tester provided truly great adaptive suspension, and there's minimal body roll that's very predictable. We love the rear-wheel drive setup that

allow you to kick out the rear end properly when exiting a turn. The new screen and infotainment software that's commensurate with the luxury brand look. The screen is now bigger and sits in a rectangularframe atop the dash. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are standard.

Infotainment System: The 8" screen has been replaced by a properly large 10.25" screen with improved graphics and OS. It adds polish to the cabin, as well as great functionality.

Controls: Genesis controls are all well laid-out, with buttons in linear, crisp format and with some of the best climate control knobs in the business. Steering wheel controls are similarly excellent. The center stack canted toward the driver is one of our favorite aspects. While the dimensions of the 2022 G70 are pretty much the same as the outgoing car, it might as well have been a full redesign because the difference a year can make is truly palpable. The new design is far more cohesive, more sophisticated, and more aggressive. Genesis took this refresh seriously, and the results are better than we had hoped.

Front: The trapezoidal shield grille has been revised to be simpler and more triangular. The parallel quad headlights look very good, indeed, and even the lower fascia vents have been cleaned up.

Rear: We love these taillight versions of the thematic lighting because they are a bit angled at the outer edges. The taillights also meld well with the trunk lid crease. The ovular tailpipes are fine, but we would've preferred round versions.

Profile: Thesinglebodycreaseisstillthere,butthefrontfender vent is now functional and better looking. Gone is the old chrome chevron version, which was purely aesthetic and not very attractive. The dark chrome wheels with the red brake calipers popping through look phenomenal.

Cabin: The G70's cabin is one of the best in the business with diamond-quilted Nappa leather seats,

2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus

The Mazda CX50 Turbo Premium Plus was a delight to drive, but before I get too deep into my likes and dislikes, I need to make a public confession. I WANT ONE. It’s hard to test drive a car then you don’t want to give it back. If you are a woman, and most likely you are because the readers that look to me for advice, expertise and review pleasure are women drivers. I don’t mean women who simply shuffle the kids around. I’m talking about women who drive for sport. Women who drive for leisure women who drive to relax, get away and just enjoy their very own machinery.

We get ourselves removed from the manufacturer's holiday card list, a quick recap: The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a five-seat compact SUV designed expressly for U.S. and Canadian markets. It addresses what some might consider shortcomings in the Mazda's compact CX-5, with more passenger and cargo space and better towing and off-road abilities. While the bulk of Mazda’s are imported, the CX-50 is built in Alabama at a new plant jointly operated with Toyota

Compared to the CX-5, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 stands about 6.5 inches longer and 3.0 inches wider,

with about an inch more ground clearance (the exact figure varies based on wheel and tire size) but a 2.0inch-lower roofline. This engine is just about adequate in the CX-30, and the CX-50 is 320 pounds heavier than that vehicle so how's that going to work? Mazda's aging six-speed automatic and allwheel drive come standard, and fuel-economy estimates are decent (25 to 27 mpg in the EPA combined cycle) but short of class leaders. Mazda plans to add a Toyota-sourced hybrid powertrain as an option in the not-too-distant future.

Great For Curves

It should come as no surprise the 2023 Mazda CX50 is at its best on a sharp, twisty road, where its admirably precise steering and well-damped suspension give the kind of precision we expect from a German sports car. Mazda's G-Vectoring system makes smart use of the center and rear differentials to control weight transfer; among its tricks, it keeps weight on the front end to sharpen corner turn-in. Few cars (let alone SUVs) respond so intuitively to steering inputs as the CX-50 like the Miata, you can practically think it through the curves.

But as talented as the CX-50 is, we can't say it's always enjoyable. The steering, though exceptionally accurate, is also heavy. The ride is rather firm, and in the chassis' heroic efforts to keep all four tire contact patches glued to the Earth, the CX-50 bobs, and weaves on uneven pavement. It seems even Mazda's suspension wizardry can't overcome the behavioral issues of a torsion-beam rear axle. We also felt the vague tug of torque steer at certain engine RPMs, particularly on corner exit. And remember we mentioned the CX-50's width? On some narrow roads, the CX-50 felt as big as a full-size pickup. We were able to make rapid progress on the most challenging sections, but our speed was hard-won the CX-50 felt like it was working against us rather than with us.

Drive Styles

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 features multiple drive modes, something Mazda has steadfastly avoided in the past. We looked for a marked difference between Normal and Sport modes, but Mazda intentionally avoided this; the company's take is that drive modes should not change the car's character, but rather preserve it in other words, ensure a consistent driving experience even when conditions change. That's a notable goal, but it also misses the point somewhat. In our view, one of the purposes of multiple drive moves is to give a driver a break during less-demanding conditions. Good as the CX50 was on that one curvy lane (and yes, we tried it in Normal and Sport modes; the differences were quite subtle), it would have been a lot less fatiguing on average roads if we could have dialed down the steering effort and off-center response.

Mazda's philosophy works better on dirt and gravel surfaces, where the Off-Road mode makes the car respond much as it does on dry pavement. On terrain uneven enough to get a wheel in the air, the CX-50 did a great job getting power to the ground. Unfortunately, the CX-50 has no hill-descent mode, which Mazda basically dismisses as a gimmick. Perhaps it is, but after descending a steep, loose hill while trying to modulate the brakes with the CX-50 in a semi-slide, we were reminded that a gimmick that provides peace-of-mind is a useful one indeed.

CX-50s with the turbocharged engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. We got a chance to tow at max capacity and were impressed by the SUV's stability. TheCX-50hasaTowing drivemode(whichreplaces

Sport when a trailer is connected) that once again uses the center differential to shift weight forward and improve steering response. We found the difference too subtle to feel, but to be fair, a strong sense of self-preservation prevented us from jerking the wheel with the trailer attached.

Lots of Selections

Mazda plans to launch nine versions of the 2023 CX50, beginning with the naturally aspirated 2.5 S. Priced at $28,025, it includes all-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The non-turbo 2.5 model will be offered in S, Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium, and Premium Plus trims, while the turbocharged 2.5 will come in Turbo, Premium, and Premium Plus models. We drove the latter, priced at $42,725 with dual-zone climate control, a power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, Bose stereo, and leather seats heated and cooled in front and heated in back). A 10th model, the top-of-theline Meridian Edition, will feature black wheels, offroad tires, and hood graphics; Mazda hasn't yet announced its price.

All in all, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is an SUV that average drivers will likely find too single-minded. Mazda concentrated on making the CX-50 a good performer in the curves, and that's an admirable trait, but it comes at the detriment of day-to-day comfort. And while rear space and cargo room are better than the CX-5, they're hardly best-in-class features.

Perhaps using the CX-30 platform was Mazda's mistake, as the CX-5 has a much better ride-handling compromise, and perhaps a simple stretch of that

longtime favorite would have worked better. Adjustable steering feel and damping and more sound insulation would make the CX-50 a much more livable SUV.

The CX-50 comes adventure ready and signifies a new styling expression in the Mazda lineup that blends the brand’s striking Kodo design with outdoor confidence. CX-50 respectfully interacts with its newfound surroundings while emphasizing Mazda’s trademark driving experience and expanded off-road capability, allowing drivers to be closer to nature.

The CX-50 is available in 10 packages with two efficient powertrain choices – a Skyactiv-G 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, or a Skyactiv-G 2.5L Turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 256 hp and320lb-ftoftorqueon premium 93 octane gas, 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular 87 octane gas. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The CX-50 comes standard with i-Active All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology and new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, or Mi-Drive with Sport, Off-Road and Towing modes on select packages. Drive modes can be selected with the Mi-Drive control and will help the crossover SUV perform naturally and confidently in a wide variety of driving conditions, such as off-road terrain, snow or while towing up to 3,500 pounds on select packages.

CX-50 2.5 S Package

The entry-level CX-50 2.5 S offers customers an impressive array of standard premium safety, convenience, and technology amenities, such as an 8.8-inch full-color center console display, eight-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlayTM and Android AutoTM integration, Mazda ConnectTM Infotainment system, two USB ports, remote keyless entry with push-button start, a 7-inch TFT LCD instrument panel display, among many other standard features.

Moving to the exterior of the CX-50, standard features include unique 17-inch Gray Metallic alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear roof spoiler, bodycolored power side-view mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, and dual exhaust outlets. All CX50 2.5 S packages come exclusively with a SkyactivG 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode and standard i-Activ AWD system with Mi-Drive with Sport and Off-Road mode with a 2,000-pound towing capacity.

2022 Kia Soul

The Kia Soul has a lot going for it. Its boxy shape gives it a seriously roomy passenger cabin and cargo area. It's also fun to drive, with above-

The Kia Soul is one of the rare vehicles that defies easy categorization. On the outside, the Soul resembles a boxy SUV, but its car-like ride height and lack of all-wheel drive make it more like a hatchback. While its taxonomy might be confusing, the Soul's wide range of strengths makes it one of our favorite small runabouts. For 2022, the Soul gets a few updates that build on its recent 2020 redesign. The larger 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen is now more widely available, and the base touchscreen is a little bigger, growing from 7 inches to 8 inches. Fans of the manual transmission will need to pour another one out, however, because the Soul has lost its shift-it-yourself gearbox.

How does the Soul drive? Maximum acceleration from the 2.0-liter engine is a little lacking, but the Soul feels perfectly spry around town. The steering is natural, and cornering abilities are better than expected. In most cases,

average handling abilities and an intuitive continuously variable automatic transmission. Minor grievances aside, this small SUV is one of the best out there.

the CVT automatic feels like a traditional automatic. In Edmunds' track testing, the Soul posted a 0-60 mph time of 8.8 seconds, which is a respectable time for a little SUV.

The steering features a light effort that builds up naturally when you move from center. The Soul has cornering abilities similar to sportier rivals such as the Mazda CX-3 and Mini Countryman. The only true downside is the touchy brake pedal, which takes some getting used to. The brake response builds too quickly, so you have to be smooth on the brakes to avoid lurching. Unlike some other subcompacts, the Soul doesn't offer all-wheel drive.

How comfortable is the Soul? The front seats are reasonably comfortable even after you've been sitting for hours. The rear seatback angle is fixed but is set at a comfortable angle. The ride is firm and controlled but never harsh. Unlike some rivals, the Soul doesn't shudder like it's falling apart when it's driven over bigger bumps.

At highway speeds, the upright windshield generates a noticeable but not irritating level of wind noise, and some tire noise is evident too. Simulated gearshifts mean the engine doesn't drone at full throttle like some CVT automatics.

How’s the interior? From an ergonomic standpoint, the simple interior design means there's not much to mess up. Navigating through touchscreen menus is easy thanks to an intuitive interface and physical buttons for high-level functions. A height-adjustable front seat and a generous range of steering wheel adjustment help accommodate drivers of all sizes.

The tall roof and wide door openings make it easy to get into the front and rear of the deceptively large cabin. There's lots of headroom and legroom in front and back four adults will have no problem taking road trips. All windows are tall and narrow with the exception of the small, upturned window in the rear three-quarter view.

How’s the tech? We tested the X-Line trim level, which has the basic six-speaker audio system. Without a dedicated subwoofer, bassy sounds come out of the speakers but lack punch. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility is standard. On every trim except the base LX, you also get advanced safety features such as forward collision mitigation and a blind-spot monitor.

How’s the storage? The Soul has a deep cargo well that gives it more cargo room than other small SUVs. Though this configuration has impressive volume (24.2 cubic feet), there's a large hump at the base of the rear seats when you fold them, which limits utility.

Storage space is decent for the class, with a good number of bins and cubbies for front occupants. Installing a car seat is tough despite a roomy back seat the anchors are inset deeply and access to the tethers is hampered by this trim's nonadjustable headrests.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA rates the CVT automatic-equipped Soul at 30 mpg combined (27 city/33 highway), which is slightly better than most competitors. However, we weren't able to replicate these numbers in real life. Over 350 miles of driving (100 of which were on the highway at a reasonable pace), we averaged just 26.8 mpg.

The continuously variable automatic transmission isn't exactly fun to use, but it is well tuned and a bit more responsive than other CVT automatics. There's also not muchpower aboard get the Turbo for apeppier engine. Still, even the mid-tier Soul is fun to toss around corners and has a pleasant ride.

The Soul uses its boxy shape to its advantage by providing lots of interior and cargo room. Styling is distinct and unmistakable. The premium audio system even gets beat-synced speaker lights, which adds to the fun factor.

The 2022 Kia Soul is available in six trim levels: LX, X-Line, GT-Line, S, EX, and Turbo. Each successive trim gets you more standard features, and the Turbo has a more powerful engine as well.

2022 Hyundai Elantra

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra sleek and modern styling is a standout in the class, and even at its affordable price, it comes with an impressive list of standard features. A baseengine and an overabundance of hard plastic inside kept it from claiming the distinction as the Top-Rated small sedan, but it's still a competitive choice among rivals such as the Honda Civic, Kia Forte and Mazda 3.

Happily, if you decide to go with the Elantra, you are not locked into the standard engine. There's the N Line model, which has a 201-horsepower turbocharged engine that's pretty strong forthis classofcar. Oriffuel economy is a priority, there's the Elantra Hybrid that gets up an estimated 54 mpg in combined driving. Then there's the new Elantra N. We originally thought it would come out for 2021 but its arrival got pushed to this year. Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out a stout 276 hp. This motor, along with a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, makes the N an absolute blast to drive on curvy back roads.

How does the Elantra drive? The base 2.4-liter fourcylinder engine is lacking when itcomes tospeed. Elantra reached 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, which is slower than average compared to rivals. Its power is sent through a continuously variable automatic transmission that Hyundai tunes for optimal fuel economy, so it too is not very impressive for spirited driving. But in typical situations, the transmission delivers a smooth experience, and there's only a little of the notorious droning noise that CVTs are known for.

Elsewhere, the Elantra is pretty middle-of-the-road. It handles corners decently well for a small sedan, behaving predictably, and it's not easily upset over bumps. But for a sporty drive, you'll want to get the N Line, which comes with a sport-tuned suspension.

How comfortable is the Elantra? The Elantra delivers a smooth ride. There's enough plushness to soak up bumps in the road well, but it also settles relatively quickly. The seats are also comfortable for the most part. The driver's seat bottom feels just a touch flat, and itmight not provide enough support on road trips more than a few hours long. There isn't much in the way of side bolstering to keep you planted when cornering either.

The climate controls are easy to use, with big dials to work the available dual-zone climate control. The heated seats, when equipped, activate quickly. There is noticeable wind noise as you increase speed, but that is typical for the class, and passengers can more or less carry-on conversations at normal volume.

How’s the interior? The Elantra cabin is well-thoughtout, with plenty of space and good outward visibility in the front row. We're also pleased to see the back seat gained 2 inches of legroom over the previous generation, allowing for quite generous accommodations for taller passengers. Their heads might still graze the ceiling, but the Elantra is among the most spacious in this class.

Our Elantra Limited test vehicle came with a poweradjustable driver's seat. It has a wide adjustment range, so it should suit short and tall drivers alike. The steering

wheel also has an ample amount of adjustment, making it simple to find your ideal driving position.

How’s the tech? The Elantra Limited's twin display screens, one for the gauges and one for the infotainment, are pleasing to use. The infotainment screen has easy-tofollow menus and quick and clear directions. The Elantra also scores extra points for including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though they only come with the standard 8-inch infotainment screen. Confusingly, the larger 10.25-inchscreenrequiresacordtoruneithersmartphone integration system. Another bright spot is the Limited's improved voice activation system that responds accurately to web searches, addresses and even climate control commands. The available full suite of advanced driving aids is one of the best modern systems, with smooth adaptive cruise control and lane centering. We experienced no false warnings during our testing.

How’s the storage? Trunk space is slightly above average for the class, at 14.2 cubic feet, which is the same size as in the previous-generation Elantra. The rear seats fold flat with remote release latches in the trunk some may find them more convenient than the releases on the seats themselves. Cupholders and storage cubbies for front passengers are nothing out of the ordinary. A wireless smartphone charging pad on the Limited trim is

a nice touch.

In the back, there are two anchors on each rear outboard seat to fasten child safety seats into place. The anchors are easy to find between the cushions. The spacious back seat means you should be able to load rearfacing seats without having to scrunch into your driving position.

How’s the fuel economy? Depending on the model, the Elantra with the 2.0-liter engine gets an EPA-estimated 35-37 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Either way you're looking at excellent fuel economy. We easily verified the EPA's estimate and even exceeded it on our mixed-driving 115-mile test route, achieving an impressive 41.8 mpg.

Is the Elantra a good value? Now you've entered the Elantra's sweet spot. It simply runs away from the competition with five years/60,000 miles of limited warranty coverage, 10 years/100,000 miles for the powertrain and free maintenance for three years/36,000 miles. We also find the pricing attractive, especially considering the long list of features that comes standard on every model. Our only complaints: the amount of hard plastic in the cabin and a back seat nearly barren of any design.

The Elantra has some wow factor with its effusive exterior styling, large bright screens, and excellent voice controls. But it makes no claim to driving excitement and it's easy to see why. Hyundai made an excellent allarounder, not a passion purchase. That's what the N Line version is for. MSRP range: $20,200 - $33,650

2023 Mazda CX5 Turbo

No one looks to small crossover SUVs for distinctive style or grand times behind the wheel. These are vehicles that emphasize the "utility" in SUV and wring maximum space for people, pets, and personal effects in a quest for daily-driven competence. The 2023 Mazda CX-5, with its tight rear quarters and skimpy cargo space, manage to rise near the top of the class? Simple:

The CX-5 delivers joy to its driver. Not mere satisfaction for a job well done, but the same pleasure you might get from a small sport sedan and open highway, withtheaddedbenefitofroomforsuppliesfromthehome improvement store. The CX-5's base four-cylinder engine is a good introduction, but the car comes alive with its optional turbocharged counterpart. The turbo engine gets a slight boost, up 6 horsepower from last year's model when filled with premium gas. The CX-5 has always deftly balanced ride comfort and responsive handling, but this year's minor suspension updates aim to reduce road noiseandvibrationsandtightenupcontrol.Finally,subtle revisions to the front and rear bumpers, headlights and sundry panels give the CX-5 a dose of fresh style.

Rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Rogue offer more rear legroom and cargo volume, but the CX-5 is unmatched when it comes to combining performance and refinement in such an affordable package. How does the CX-5 drive? The base engine provides underwhelming acceleration while moving and overtaking on the highway requires some planning. It fares slightly better from a dead stop the 0-60 mph run on our test track took 8.7 seconds, which is typical for rivals with a base engine. The available turbocharged engine gets the CX-5 to 60 mph in only 6.6 seconds. Handling is where the CX-5 excels. Since it's sharp and communicative, you can take corners at speeds greater than rivals without squealing tires or feeling like you're out of control. The car is unfazed by quick left-to-right transitions. This is the best-handling small crossover. No doubt about it.

How comfortable is the CX-5? The front seats are shaped well and generally comfortable. The rear bench seatisflatonthebottom,whichmightmakelong-distance driving uncomfortable for rear passengers. But the rear seatback can recline for added comfort. The CX-5's ride quality is firm but comfortable. Midcorner bumps barely faze the CX-5, and it never feels floaty. Road imperfections are dealt with immediately. Noise in the cabin is really only evident at highway speeds. Even then, you won't have to raise your voice to talk to passengers.

How’s the interior? The cabin is driver-oriented with all controls withineasy reach.The CX-5 is spacious upfront, and there's enough headroom for tall folks all around.

Rear passengers might feel cramped by the sculpted outboard seats, which also make it difficult for an adult to sitinthemiddle.Rearlegroomisalittletight.Anelevated driving position, tall windows and narrow pillars make this an easy car to see out of. The exception is the view over your shoulder; the rear windows are a bit smaller than those of competitors but provide a decent view to limit blind spots. The backup camera's resolution is crisp.

How’s the tech? The infotainment system is easy to use overall, and the 10.25-inch display screen is bright and attractive. The available integrated navigation system is also easy to figure out. CX-5s with the head-up display can project turn instructions right onto the windshield. Mazda's voice control system is based on natural speech recognition. It's good at entering destinations, calling people, and tuning to terrestrial radio stations. The usability of the CX-5's advanced driver aids is a mixed bag. The lane departure warning system emits a unique low-pitched buzzing sound that really gets your attention. But the blind-spot monitor is overly sensitive, even triggering while passing vehicles that are several car lengths behind.

How’s the storage? The CX-5 has a cargo area that's a bit smaller than those in competitors, but we were able to fit two large suitcases without impeding rear visibility. The portal to load items is also a little smaller than the Honda CR-V's because of a higher cargo floor height and shorter max open height of the liftgate. Storage space for small items inside the cabin is abundant. Got small kids? Four slots on the outboard seats allow access to the car seat anchors. It's easy to push

past the slots, but the anchors are inset a bit. The tethers on the seatback are easy to reach even with thecargocoverin place. Push downon theplastictab that keeps stuff concealed to access the tether.

How’s the fuel economy? Estimated fuel economy stands at 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving for an all-wheel-drive CX-5 with the base engine. We managed to get 28.8 mpg from our test AWD CX-5 on our 115-mile mixed-driving evaluation route, so you can probably expect to match the EPA's number. Some top rival crossover SUVs will still get you slightly better fuel economy.

Is the CX-5 a good value? There's not a single cheap-feeling trim piece in the CX-5. All materials, from the available leather upholstery to the buttons and controls, feel expensive. The only disappointments are the malleable side bolsters that rub against the center console in turns. Everything else is exceptional. Fully loaded, the CX-5 can be a bit less expensive than top-trim competitors. Warranty coverage is average for the class, and there is no free maintenance included, also typical for the class. The CX-5 is impressive from the moment you lay eyes on the expressive, sharklike nose. The good vibes continue when you take a seat inside and see the beautifully constructed cabin that puts all other vehicles in this class to shame. For starters, the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which include Frontal Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Pedestrian Detection and Bicyclist Detection, features an enhancement to the lens camera and millimeter-wave radar elements to expand the response range. A new update to the PCS on LSS+ 2.5 includes Intersection Turning Assist. At intersections, the system has the capability under certain conditions to recognize an oncoming vehicle when performing a lefthand turn, or a pedestrian when performing left and righthand turns, and is designed to activate typical PCS functions if needed. Additional new PCS functions include Emergency Steering Assist (ESA), which is designed to enhance vehicle stability and help prevent

All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) can be activated above 30mph and is designed to perform vehicle-to-vehicle distance controls down to 0 mph and can resume from a stop. DRCC also includes a new feature that allows for smooth overtaking of slower vehicles. If traveling behind a vehicle going slower than the preset speed, once the driver engages the turn signal, the system will provide an initial increase in acceleration in preparation for changing lanes and; after the driver changes lanes, the vehicle will continue acceleration until it reachesthe original preset drivingspeed. LSS 2.5+ adds Curve Speed Reduction, which can automatically reduce vehicle speed, if needed, through certain types of curves.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA) is designed to help notify the driver if it senses an inadvertent lane departure at speeds above 32 miles per hour via steering wheel vibrations or audible alert. It can alsotakeslightcorrectivemeasurestohelpkeepthedriver within the visibly marked lane. When DRCC is set and engaged, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is designed to provide slight steering force to help steer to the center of the lane to assist the driver with staying in the lane using visible lane markers or a preceding vehicle. LTA alerts thedriver witha visual warningandeither an audiblealert or steering wheel vibration. In the new ES, the lane recognitionperformance, whichmakes LTA possible, has beenimprovedwithenhancedrecognitionoflineandroad edge, lateral G performance, and enhanced control and stability after lane change. With LSS+ 2.5, LTA receives improved course recognition and can track the paths of nearby vehicles in adjacent lanes for greater lane centering capability.

Additional carryover features include Intelligent High Beams, which detect preceding or oncoming vehicles and automatically switches between high beam and low beam headlights to help provide greater visibility. Road Sign Assist (RSA) is designed to acquire certain road sign information using a camera and navigation maps when data is available and displays them on the multiinformation display (MID).

Seductive Elegance, Refined

The 2022 ES receives various exterior design updates, including a new grille pattern on all trims, excluding ES F SPORT. The new mesh pattern emphasizes the vehicle’s elegant design with a series of concentric “L” shapes that radiate from the front Lexus emblem, all finished in a new Graphite paint. This new grille design offers a refreshed look, while still preserving ES’s provocative elegance. Tying the frontend design together are redesigned standard bi-LED headlamps with dynamic auto-leveling.

A wide array of wheel designs adds the finishing touch to the ES exterior. For 2022, the all-new standard 17-inch wheel features thicker spoke ends that are layered in “V” formations to produce a sporty impression. A larger 18-inch wheel, which is available on Base and Luxury trims, has also received an update, and features a split-10-spoke design with two-tone Black and machined finish for a clean and sophisticated look. An additional 18-inch five-spoke alloy noise reduction wheel is available with the Luxury and Ultra Luxury trims. ES F SPORT models get exclusive 19-inch split-five-spoke alloy wheels with a new Black finish that accentuates the model’s sporty exterior.

Lexus Key Driving Signature

The new 2021 Lexus IS launched an era of vehicles developed at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama with a shared Lexus Driving Signature. Since Lexus launched, the tactile feel, behavior, and execution for each model has been driven by the vision and efforts of the Chief Engineer. Moving forward, the efforts of the CE will be focused on elevating the vehicles to a new standard of performance and handling as developed by Lexus International President and Chief Branding Officer Koji Sato and Master Driver and Brand Holder Akio Toyoda. The ultimate goal is to deliver a new generation of Lexus vehicles that is more balanced, refined in control, and confident than ever before. Linear steering, brake responses, and optimized handling with exceptional ride quality is the result of heightened focus on tuning of the chassis and its interactions with the control surfaces through diligent evaluation at a test facility unlike any other.

The 2022 ES builds on the strides made with Lexus Driving Signature on IS and IS 500 with additional performance updates, including a new rear suspension member brace to further enhance torsional rigidity, handling stability, and ride comfort. The ES brake system has also received updates on both gas and hybrid models. Thebrakepedal shapehasbeenenlargedonall ESmodels to improve foot stability and confidence when the pedal isdepressed.OnESgasmodels,thevacuum brakesystem master cylinder and booster have been optimized to provide a more linear brake pedal feeling and response. F SPORT Options for Elegance and Handling

The seventh-generation ES built on the GA-K platform allowed for a more dynamic exterior design and the introduction of the first-ever ES F SPORT. Since its introduction, it has attracted a younger and more diverse

buyer interested in race-inspired styling and F SPORT control honed on the track. For 2022, the ES F SPORT will offer luxury sedan enthusiasts more choice with a revised grade strategy that separates style and performance enhancements. The ES 250 AWD and ES 350 will continue to be offered in F SPORT trim, and 2022 adds a new ES 300h F SPORT grade. These models will focus on exterior and interior styling with features like exclusive F SPORT badging, mesh grille with dark surround, trunk lid spoiler, unique 19-inch wheels with new Black finish, steering wheel, front seats, pedals, shift lever and knob, and gauges with removable display ring.

For buyers looking for additional performance, ES 350 F SPORT will offer an all-new Dynamic Handling Package (DHP) that includes Sport+ and Custom Drive modes, Intuitive Parking Assist, and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). The AVS system on ES 350 F SPORT with DHP is capable of 650 levels of adjustment to deliver optimal ride quality and precise control. Adjustments are based on information from sensors that measure both linear and vertical g loads, vehicle speed, steering angle, yaw rate and master cylinder pressure in addition to information from the engine control computer and skid control computer.

2023 Genesis G90 AWD 3.5T E-Supercharger

G90 introduces a bold new direction that premium cars should pursue, with advanced.

The G90 proves a luxury car doesn’t need a maddeningly complex infotainment system. Access to features is easy to figure out; the screen is a “toucher” that makes direct selections possible for those who prefer that kind of operation. Driving and convenience controls are within easy reach of the driver. (There’s something about the angled blades on either side of the instrument cluster with trunk-release and panel-lighting buttons that reminds me of overdone “space-age” instrument arrays on Chrysler makes, circa 1961.)

Though a fairly big car by today’s standards, the G90 drives like it’s a little smaller than it is. Ride is pretty comfy without going flabby, even in “Comfort,” or overly stiff in “Sport.” I felt a few odd standing starts momentarily delayed, then abruptly engaged but this wasn’t consistent. The engine was fairly quiet under concerted acceleration, and it delivered easy cruising and passing power. While some automakers are throwing in the towel on sedans, Genesis is giving its flagship G90 a good polish instead. Updated for 2023, the full-size luxury sedan gains styling tweaks inside and out, a new suspension that promises a smoother ride, and new

high-tech features to automate the driving experience.

Exterior Enhancements

The 2023 G90 sports a new face, with an update to its signature grille and slimmer two-line headlights that mimic the Genesis badge. The sedan’s rear end is also updated with full-width taillights and an elongated trunk. Genesis says it lowered elements including the license plate, sensors, and reverse lights to draw focus to the upper area of the vehicle and to achieve a cleaner look.

A Smoother, Calmer Ride

The G90 will house a new 3.5-liter turbocharged engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission to replace the outgoing options: a standard 365-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.3liter V-6 and an available 420-hp, 5.0-liter V-8. Genesis says performance specs for the new engine will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s arrival.

In addition to the new engine, the G90 will get new suspension technology for a smoother ride and improved handling, according to the automaker. A camera-based Preview-Electronic Control Suspension system that monitors road conditions to optimize the suspension in various conditions will come standard. An air suspension offers three settings to improve stability depending on conditions: During high-speed driving, the system can lower the vehicle height for improved wind resistance, raise the vehicle on rough or uneven terrain, and elevate the front wheels when going down a steep slope.

Genesis says a quieter ride will accompany the smoother driving experience that comes from the

suspension updates. This is thanks to a noisecanceling system called Active Noise Control-Road, which deadens road noise in each of the sedan’s seats.

New Automated Tech

Another way the G90 aims to help drivers take a load off is with new automation features including an EasyClose system that closes the vehicle’s doors with the push of a buttonor a press of the brake pedal (for the driver-side door). A hands-free smart trunk system uses sensors to automatically open the sedan’s trunk when the driver stands nearby, and a Digital Key system uses a smartphone app that lets the driver unlock and start the vehicle by simply touching the door handle.

How It Drives: The Mazda3 Turbo has a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 227 horsepower on regular gas (250 with premium gas). That motor is the most powerful of the Mazda3’s three engine options; the other two make 155 horsepower and 186 horsepower.

The Turbo is an expensive upgrade in a new Mazda3 hatchback, requiring 9,000 more of your hard-earned dollars. I don’t think it’s worth it. While it is the strongest of the three available engines, it doesn’t make the 3 feel powerful – just a little faster. The midtier, 186-horsepower engine costs 30% less, and it’s certainly not 30% worse. In fact, it’s pretty lively. It also doesn’t need premium gas to get its top performance, as the Turbo does.

The Mazda3 is among the few compact cars still available with a manual transmission, and that adds to the fun. Both the 186- and 250-horsepower engines can have one. Most people will choose the automatic, and that’s a great transmission as well. While the majority of automakers are using continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) to save gas, Mazda sticks with a traditional 6-speed automatic, which makes it feel faster without hurting fuel economy. Not Only Gorgeous, Its Turbo Tough

Mazda3 attribute, regardless of the engine. Only the Honda Civic can match the Mazda3’s cornering. The 3’s ride is firm but not stiff, which bolstered my confidence in corners without making me uncomfortable. It really feels like a little luxury car, a theme that recurs in the cabin.

Interior Comfort & Quality: The Mazda3’s interior is Porsche-like – driver-focused, sleek, high-tech, and premium. It’s the nicest interior in the class. The leather front seats in our test car were supportive and had plenty of head- and legroom, although they are somewhat narrow, which could squeeze wider drivers.

Though the Mazda3 is gorgeous inside, there’s a lot about it that isn’t practical. The rear seats are cramped – with the front seats set for my6-footheight,Ididn’t have enough legroom and there was barely enough headroom. The Mazda3 hatchback’s cargo area is roomy compared with a sedan, but it can’t hold anywhere near the cargo that fits behind the hatch of an SUV. The hatchback also has huge rear window pillars that create large blind spots.

Technology & Usability: The Mazda3’s infotainment system looks sleek, like the rest of the vehicle, but it has a steep learning curve. The central screen isn’t a touchscreen; instead, a knob between the front seats rotates to select items on the display. Another knob controls the volume. It’s intuitive once you’re used to it, but it takes a while to get used to it. The Mazda3 isn’t a high-tech wonderland, but the base hatchback has a ton of features, including items. as diverse as adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and lane keep assist, making it a great value.

2023 Toyota Tundra TRD

I’ve always loved Toyota products and whenever I get a chance to test drive, I raise my hand high.

The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra full-size pickup debuted last year after great anticipation. The third-generation Tundra made an immediate impact on the segment, thanks, in part, to its two new twin-turbo V6 powertrains, the most powerful of which surprised many since it is a hybrid. Already offering a wide array of choices and options, the 2023 Tundra enters the new model year a new SX Package that offers an updated appearance without a hefty price tag.

At 1 Lone Star Pass in San Antonio, Texas, a new Tundra rolls off the line every minute. To date, Toyota has invested nearly $4 billion in its Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) plant, creating thousands of American jobs and assembling up to 180,000 Tundra’s per year. TMMTX has been focusing on Toyota’s largest pickup truck since 2008, and the 2022 Tundra is a clear example of how the full-size truck embodies its larger-than-life home state.

With up to a 12,000-pound max towing capacity on the i-FORCE engine model, the all-new Tundra is the most powerful Toyota pickup truck. That’s palpable on the Tundra’s exterior, as the full-size pickup was designed to dial up the spirit of previous models to emphasize strength. And with a new aluminum-

reinforced composite bed and all-new multilink rear suspension, it doesn’t just look Texas-tough, it is. Driving Experience

Mazda's all-new electrification technology, called eSkyactiv EV, further enhances the human-centric approach for driving dynamics and handling of a Mazda vehicle. Powered by a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, the front-wheel drive 80.9 kW electric motor will deliver an output of 107 kW (143 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 271 Nm (200 lb-ft), providing a smooth and connected feeling that helps enhance confidence for the driver. The battery pack is developed with MX-30's natural driving experience in mind. The battery pack is mounted under the floor in a flat, modular arrangement with a thin cooling system to keep the battery operating at the right temperature for optimal performance. This positioning also supports the vehicle's low center of gravity. MX-30 may feature a powertrain unique to the current Mazda lineup, but it maintains a driver and vehicle connection that supports a natural driving feeling. The 35.5 kWh battery can be charged to 80% within approximately 36 minutes with a Level 3: DC 50 kW fast charger, 2 hours, and 50 minutes with a Level 2: AC 240V / 30 amps charger, or 13 hours and 40 minutes with a Level 1: AC 120V / 15 amps charger.3 When plugged-in, an indicator light will show the charging status. While Mazda is confident with the performance of the battery, an eight-year, or 100,000-mile warranty, is included to help add peace of mind. The three-year complimentary Mazda Connected Services also allows owners to remotely monitor and control the state of the MX-30 through the MyMazda App. This includes remote start / stop charging and checking battery levels, in addition to features such as remotely setting the climate control or locking the doors.

2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line

Thetried-and-true Lexus GX getsafewupdates for 2022, but at its core, it's the same luxury SUV it's always been. It uses old-school body-onframe architecture but has that famous Lexus reliability and some serious off-road chops. However, against a crop of more modern, more capable SUVs, is that enough. That said, the GXisn't pretty. It's 16 feet long with ahugegrilleand lab-sided design. It looks like a Lexus, for sure, but I'm not really sure if that's a good thing these days. The GX has a big following in the overlanding community. Off-roaders appreciate its reliability, stellar suspension, and ease of customization. Full-time four-wheel drive is coupled with Lexus' Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System keeping all four wheels on the ground over uneven surfaces for superior traction. A locking center differential can split the torque evenly from front to rear and a low range keeps the SUV motivated over slow and rocky terrain.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE AWD

If the venerable Toyota Corolla were an SUV, what would it be like? Thankfully, just like the smart, sensible, and sporty Corolla Cross – which fills the gap between the C-HR and the ever-larger RAV4. Roomy on theinside,easy to drive and peppy enough to keep up with traffic, the Cross is truly the working man’s CUV.

There’s nothing ostentatious about the Cross, and yet it is easy on the eyes – drawing style cues the RAV4 – and highly functional. Let’s count some of the ways it’s like the Corollas we’ve known over the years: Good on fuel? Check. Simple to operate? Check. Bit of a wallflower? Check. Mediocre power, but reliable performance? Check. Something you’ll learn to love over years of ownership. Check.

Price: How Much Does The Corolla Cross Cost?

The Cross comes in six model and trim configurations (three trims, plus two drive configurations), starting at $24,890 plus $1,860 freight for the FWD L model, and reaching $36,235.70 all-in price for the top-of-the-line AWD XLE. You can get into AWD with the L for as little as $26,290 plus $1,860 freight. The base model

comes with a six-speaker audio system, 7” touchscreen display, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, compatibility, heated front seats and 17” steel wheels. The LE adds push button start, heated faux leather steering wheel, alloy wheels, and blind spot monitor. The XLE upgrades the audio to a 9-speaker JBL system, adds 8-way power seats and dual zone auto AC, a power back door and moonroof, 18” alloy wheels and fog lamps. Toyota has priced the Cross competitively with the FWD Kia Seltos (starting at $23,095), the CX-30 (starting at $24,700), and Taos (starting at $26,695).

A Look Inside The Compact SUV’s Cabin

The inside of the Cross is both inviting and comfortable. The two lower trim levels come with cloth seats, and the top-of-the-line XLE’s seats are covered in Toyota’s nicely done SofTex faux-leather (actually thermoplastic polyurethane), available in a calming two-tone beige and black theme. The comfortable front seats provide ample headroom.

Legroom is good in the front, but rear legroom is a trifle shy. The 60/40-split folding rear seat will accommodate three across. Controls are easy to find and simple to figure out. Apple CarPlay/Android

Auto are standard even on the base L’s seven-inch touchscreen. Higher trim levels have an eight-inch touchscreen, and the XLE also gets a wireless charge pad and four USB ports. The XLE has a partly digital gauge pod. Large glass area and heightened seating position provide great visibility.

There is just one powertrain for the Cross – the familiar 2.0-litre, 16-valve four-banger mated to a CVT. Fuel economy is a respectable 8.1 city/7.4 highway for AWD and 7.6/7.0 FWD, yet the undersized 50-litre fuel tank provides a range of only 450 kilometers. Horsepower from this non-turbo engine is rated at 169 hp at 6,600 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm – less than the 175 hp/195 lbft of torque found in the turbo Kia Seltos.

Towing capacity and that CVT transmission Towing capacity is rated at a measly 1,500 pounds –in other words, “don’t bother trying.” Although, as a car enthusiast, Ihate the mushyfeel ofCTVs, Toyota has refined the Cross’s tranny and fitted a physical first gear to give a more direct feel when starting out. Even with the CVT’s annoyances, however, driving is a pleasure, with a light feel on the wheel and sure-

footed cornering around town. Just be careful to give yourself lots of time to build up momentum when overtaking other vehicles.

Takeaway

There are two compelling reasons to consider the Corolla Cross if you are in the market for a compact SUV: 1) the Corolla’s mind-bending record of reliability, and 2) value for dollars spent. I’ll bet the Cross will still be going strong long after the bloom of new love is gone, because it’s about as close to indestructible as an affordable car can get. But you will not just be buying a reliable car. Here’s a look at Toyota’s entire small SUV lineup.

With its muted colors, simple interior, and ergonomically designed seats, the Cross is a pleasant car to sit in – whether just for a cross-town drive or for hours across Canada’s snowy prairies. And with AWD available at a price even a student (well, at least some) could afford, it provides a sure-footed experience that ensures you will get to where you want to go without a migraine. Now that’s value!

2022 Genesis G80 AWD 3.5T Sport Prestige

Much like its parent company, Genesis, the luxury division of the Hyundai Motor Group, has been on a massive product offensive over the past 18 months that has transformed its lineup. Everything Genesis sells is new or recently new, from the pure electric GV60 compact crossover, to the larger GV70 and GV80 SUVs and its forthcoming 2023 G90 flagship sedan, which is also allnew. The focus of this review, the G80 Sport, is a new performance variant of the second-generation mid-size G80 sedan that was all-new in 2021

G80 Sedan Pricing

The G80 Sport comes well-stocked in both the U.S. and Canada, although option packages are available. The base MSRPintheU.S.,whereit’sknownasthe3.5TSportAWD, is $65,250 (USD), while pricing starts at $73,500 (CAD) in Canada. In the U.S., two option packages are available. Sport Prestige with all-season tires ($6,000 USD) adds items such 20-inch sport alloy wheels, Nappa leather seating and a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster. Sport Prestige with summer tires ($6,500 USD) adds to Active Noise Control to the list of features included in the all-season package. In Canada, the 3.5T Sport Plus AWD package ($6,500 CAD) comes with a 12.3-inch 3D instrumentcluster, Nappa leather seating, 16-way power driver’s seat, rear wheel steering, Sport+ mode and launch control, surround view monitor, blind-view monitor, carbon fiber interior and more.

2022 Genesis G80 Sport Interior

As one might expect, the G80 Sport comes fully loaded. Among the highlights are Sport exclusives such as V-pattern leather seating, three-spoke steering wheelwith red stitching

and carbon fiber door garnishes. Other standard amenities include a 21-speaker Lexicon premium audio system, 14.5inch HD multimedia system with embedded navigation, heated steering wheel, heated / ventilated front seats, headup display and more.

The G80 Sport cabin is spacious, exceedingly comfortable, with impressive fit and finish. Genesis designers have filled the cabin with an array of soft touch materials, stylish plastic andcarbonfiber inserts andbrushed metallic accents that brighten up the centre console and dash panel while retaining ease of use.

One negative here is the decision to place a rotary gear selector directly below a rotary multimedia interface controller, which can cause one to be confused for the other. Rotary gear selectors are spreading across the industry like wildfire, which is a shame – and a potential hazard – given gear shift levers are much more intuitive.

Performance / Drive Impressions

The G80 3.5T Sport AWD / G80 Sport has one powertrain, a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine (375 hp / 391 lb-ft.) paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Fuel consumption is 16 / 25 mpg or 14.8 / 9.9 L /100km (city /highway). Despite its sportier aesthetic, the G80 Sport is still a premium cruiser, and it cruises along quietly in everyday driving situations. However, by flipping the drive mode selector from eco to sport or sport+, engine revs spike, the 8-speed’s shift pattern becomes more aggressive, and the driver’s seat pinches your sides! In this mode, the G80 Sport awakens, transforming from daily driver to pavement-eating.

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition

This special edition SUV provides a glimpse of the upcoming 2022 Highlander lineup (and lots of bronze). The hybrid's efficiency is tough to beat. Customers looking at the hybridpowered Highlander for 2022 can now step things up with a touch of bronze. The 2022 Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition built on the Highlander Hybrid XLE grade is only available for the hybrid model, powered by the 2.5L petrol inlinefour with electric motors front and rear, paired to an AWD drivetrain (check out our 2020 Highlander Hybrid review here). It comes in either the Bronze Edition-exclusive Cement color, or Wind Chill Pearl that’s new to the entire 2022 Highlander lineup which entered its 4th, redesigned generation in 2020.

So, really, the upgrades on this mid-size SUV are all cosmetic, including 18-inch bronze wheels, bronze interior stitching, illuminated bronze door sills, mid-century modern-inspired SofTextrimmed seats with fabric insert and bronze stitching, and a special bronze logo embroidered on the floor and cargo mats. Toyota states the Highlander Bronze Edition is a glimpse into the lineup’s future offerings, like the height/tilt power passenger seat adjustments which are now standard on Highlander XLE and above trims for 2022. Other noteworthy features with this special edition SUV taken from the XLE include a digital rear

mirror, hands-free liftgate, in-dash ambient lighting, DRLs, and puddle lamps with the Highlander logo.

I drove the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition back in January, which was awkward timing, really. Bronze seems like an odd choice for an Olympic year. Sure, it’s thematically consistent, but it also seems a bit selfdeprecating. While it wouldn’t make much sense to call something with bronze wheels a “Gold” or “Silver” edition, we’ve already seen the liberties Toyota is willing to take with its special edition model names. Surely something that didn’t suggest a third-place finish was available.

The Highlander was delivered in frigid conditions that persisted throughout the week. This immediately reminded me just how long it takes to heat the cabin of a three-row crossover in subfreezing temperatures. The hybrid powertrain didn’t seem to make matters better. The Highlander frequently started up without the internal combustion engine, which seems problematic when you want to circulate coolant to run a heater, but I’m certain Toyota’s engineers thought of that. And the seat and steering wheel heaters which couldn’t possibly rely on hot water from the engine were just as sluggish.

But this warm-up time gave me the chance to familiarize myself with the Highlander’s cabin. The Bronze Edition is exclusive to the Hybrid. Based on the XLE, it’s available in one of three colors

Cement (which is exclusive to Bronze), Wind Chill Pearl (new for ’22) or Midnight Black Metallic (that’s black) with a smattering of bronze accents outside and in. In addition to the equipment that comes standard on the XLE, the Bronze Edition adds a hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a digital rearview mirror, upgraded power outlets, puddle lamps, in-dash ambient lighting and a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory. It’s a popular equipment package with bronze accents, in other words.

This was the first time I’ve actually driven the new Highlander Hybrid, and apart from the aforementioned gripes with the cabin temperature, which I chalk up to a simple reality of living with a large car in the Midwest, my biggest gripe is with the infotainment, which is based on the 8-inch system that is standard all the way down to the LE model (Limited and Platinum have access to a much better 12.3-inch unit).

That said, the 8.0-inch unit still boasts a reasonably impressive standard feature list, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and four USB charge ports. And since this tester came without the optional navigation upgrade, the small screen’s ho-hum display resolution isn’t much of an annoyance. Still, it would be nice to see the 12.3inch unit available lower in the lineup as it’s a

significant upgrade in usability (plus, the Kia Telluride's own widescreen display is now standard throughout its line).

The Bronze Edition’s strength is that it’s based on the Hybrid, which is inherently advantageous in a segment where few exist. The Ford Explorer is the Highlander’s dynamic superior thanks to its RWD chassis and generally sportier tuning but you’ll pay thousands more up front and its combined 27 mpg figure pales in comparison to the Highlander’s 36. Even in the cold, the Highlander managed 31 mpg combined during my short time behind the wheel.

Most of that time was spent in snow, which allowed the Highlander's all-wheel-drive system the opportunity to distinguish itself. While it had no trouble wrangling the Hybrid's 243 horsepower on cold, dry pavement, the white stuff made things a bit trickier. Toyota says the Bronze Edition checks in at 4,515 pounds with AWD; that's quite a bit of mass to rein in. A decent set of snow tires would go a long way to improving winter confidence.

While there’s nothing particularly exciting about it, the Highlander Hybrid is as efficient as three-row gasoline-powered SUVs get. Its lack of edge makes it comfortable but not sloppy, and it’s the kind of cruiser that can pack away hundreds of mindless freeway miles with little effort and longer stretches between fuel stops.

2022 Lexus NX 350h Luxury AWD

The Lexus NX crossover comes to 2022 with a redesign that delivers dramatic styling, a cabin with a giant touchscreen, and four new powertrains including a plug-in hybrid, to better challenge its many European competitors. It's built more for comfort than sport, with a pleasant ride the best facet of its handling.

The NX 250 hosts a 2.5-liter inline-4 making 203 horsepower, mated to an 8-speed automatic with frontwheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The NX 350 has a 2.4-liter turbo-4 making 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, using the same transmission but sold with AWD only.

There are two hybrids. The NX 350h makes 239 horsepower and uses a CVT designed for electric power, with 10 simulated gears. The new NX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid with a range of 37 miles of electric-only driving. It pairs a 2.5-liter inline-4 with two electric motors and batteries, with the rear motor providing allwheel drive. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a quick 6.0 seconds, using its total of 302 horsepower.

The EPA rates the base FWD NX 250 at 26/33/28 mpg, and the AWD version at the same combined mpg. The turbo-4 engine gets 22 mpg city, 29 highway, 25 combined.

The NX 350h hybrid with AWD is rated at 41/37/39 mpg. The 450+ plug-in hybrid gets 36 mpg combined after it's used its 37 miles of electric range, for a net of 84 MPGe.

The 2022 NX has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, and active lane control. Options include a head-up display, a surroundview camera system, and automatic park assist.

LINE UP

Made in Canada, the NX comes as NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h and NX 450h+. The NX 250 for $39,025 comes with synthetic leather, wood, or black trim, a 9.8inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 10speaker 296-watt sound system, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Optional all-wheel drive is $1,600.

The $41,625 NX 350 and $42,125 NX 350h are equipped the same, but with turbo and hybrid powerplants, respectively. The Luxury package on these models for $7,500 adds leather seating, a 14.0-inch touchscreen, a 10.0-inch head-up display, a sunroof, LED headlights, satellite radio, ambient lighting, and 20inch wheels. The 350 models can be had with an F Sport package with distinctive wheels and trim; stand-alone options include a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

For $56,635 the powerful 450h+ hybrid comes with the Luxury trim, plus adaptive dampers and 20-inch wheels; the F Sport package is also available. Its standard charger is 3.3 kw, but with the optional able

6.6-kw charger on Level 2 charging system, it can reach full charge in 2.5 hours.

The 2022 NX now looks more like its siblings, the mid-size RX and subcompact UX. The sharp wrinkles and character lines of the outgoing NX are retained and amplified, and the fender flares enlarged, to make the new version bolder and more dramatic. The glass in the side windows is more steeply tapered.

The spindle grille is also exaggerated, wider and taller than it was before both higher and lower. The taillights are connected by a band of light spanning the rear.

The F Sport has a similar titanium-look swath around the car, from the dark grille to the rocker panels to the bottom of the rear bumper.

Interior

The big new available touchscreen is located at the driver's fingertips, under a bezel integrated with the center console. The standard screen is a mere 9.8 inches compared to this 14-inch giant that shouts high technology.

The cabin materials are of high quality and chosen well. They come in a variety of colors from ivory to maroon and can be lit in 64 different shades with the ambient lighting. The standard upholstery is synthetic leather in black, brown, beige, or red, with a choice of piano-black or wood trim.

The NX introduces Lexus' new infotainment system, which does away with the old touchpad on the console. This new system uses the touchscreen or voice commands. The 14-inch screen controls climate functions, while its navigation display can fill the screen. The system can stream Amazon or Apple music, is automatically updated, and can save the profiles of different drivers, including learning how they drive.

The NX's wheelbase has grown by 1.2 inches and overall length by 0.8 inches (it's also 0.8 inches taller), without adding any more room to the rear seat or cargo area. The driver gets it all: 1.8 more inches for their legs, and 0.9 inch for their head. The back seat is comfortable for two medium-sized people.

The NX has 22.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat, and 46.9 cubic feet with the seatbacks lowered.

The 2.5-liter inline-4 in the NX 250 posts output of 203 horsepower, and it takes the front-drive model 8.2 seconds to reach 60 mph; it's 8.6 seconds with AWD. NX 350h Hybrids aren't much quicker but feel stronger because of their low-end electric power.

The turbocharged NX 350 hits its stride with 275 eager horsepower. It's fluent at highway merging and passing, and its transmission shifts cleanly.

TheNX450h+plug-inhybridisthesecret performance weapon. It can do 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds. With battery power and a net 302 hp, it has instant torque from a start, and decent passing power. The 18.1-kwh lithium-ion battery pack can deliver 37 miles of all-electric driving, a tease of future electric Toyotas and Lexuses with allelectric power.

TheNX350and450h+areavailableasFSportmodels, with adaptive dampers and damped chassis crossbars that make the structure more rigid. No NX is agile, but these improvements make the most of the NX's conventional suspensiondesignand its carefully controlled ride and steering feel.

The all-wheeldrive system, standard on every NX but the NX 250 where it's optional, is not designed or intended for off-roading, instead offering security on slippery pavement.

SUMMARY

The 2022 Lexus NX leans heavily into digital displays and driver assistance for its crossover credibility. It's best in hybrid forms, where fuel economy soars, but the strong performance of the NX 350 is a great alternative.

2023 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature

Not only does the 2023 Mazda CX-5 deliver on the brand’s reputation for athletic handling, but it also offers a near-luxury experience for mainstream money. It’s this particular blend of nimble road manners and interior refinement that makes the CX-5 one of our favorite small SUVs, especially higher-end models that come with the optional 256-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The entrylevel engine is a pokier 187-hp four, but all-wheel drive is standard on all models as is the CX-5’s lithe handling, which will satisfy regardless of your choice of engine. The CX-5 isn’t perfect although, that depends on who you ask as it’s not as spacious as rivals such as the Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4. Few compact SUVs can match the Mazda’s panache, though, and in a segment full of pragmatic options the CX-5’s charms are alluring.

The CX-5 is joined by the similarly sized CX-50 in the lineup this year creating a sibling rivalry within the same showroom, but Mazda says it plans on selling both models for the time being. The 2023 CX-5 is largely unchanged from last year but gains a new optional Rhodium White paint color.

We think the Turbo trim best exemplifies the CX-5. With the upgraded 256-hp turbocharged engine, its quickness better corresponds with its athletic handling. Its exterior is elegantly sporty with trim-specific gloss-black accents. Its interior mirrors that sportiness with red accents and stitching.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 256-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration. Both engines pair with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission and allwheel drive. You don't need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But

italso soaksuproughroadswithoutcommotionandhastheride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. At the same time, the Mazda comes alive on curvy roads. The electrically assisted steering provides satisfying responses. The Signature model we tested had a reassuring brake-pedal feel that operated without delay and without being too touchy when you apply the brakes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With two engine options, the CX-5 has two fuel-economy ratings. The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 27 highway. We've tested both on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, and the standard engine returned 32 mpg compared with the turbo four's 30 mpg result. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Wake up inside the top-tier CX-5 models and you might think you've been abducted by kidnappers driving an Audi or a Mercedes. First-rate materials and a fabulous layout make it feel especially upscale. The floor-hinged accelerator pedal feels better than the more common version that is suspended above the floor, the well-crafted steering wheel is directly in front of the driver and not offset at a slight angle, and all of the frontseat armrests are at the same height for optimal comfort. Sacrifices come in small packages: in this case, the CX-5 held just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats in our testing. The storage bay does benefit from a completely flat load floor. There are also several nooks and crannies in the cabin to store smartphones and other small items. For instance, the center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful bin with a removable shelf.

2023 Toyota Corolla XSE

Few cars could have a better foundation for success than the Toyota Corolla, a nameplate that has appeared on more vehicles worldwide than any other. Although the Corolla has been around for more than half a century, it has always kept pace with changes in motorists’ needs and preferences. That’s how it has come to achieve world-record sales of more than 50 million across 12 generations since 1966. This ability to adapt with the times is just as evident today with the announcement of the New Corolla. While the visible exterior and interior updates are an evolution of the 12th generation Corolla’s design, more significant changes have been made to the powertrain and electronics.

With fresh styling, the introduction of fifth generation hybrid electric technology, a comprehensively upgraded digital user experience and an extended range of Toyota TMate safety and assistance features, the New Corolla is equipped to strengthen its role as a core volume model for Toyota in Europe. Its enduring appeal is reflected in the fact it has achieved its highest market share in Europe in its history and is Toyota’s second best-selling model in the region.

There is “a Corolla for all” with hatchback, Touring Sports and sedan versions. These will be joined by an SUV – Corolla Cross in the second half of the year. This breadth of choice ensures the top body style choices in different markets across Europe are catered for, each one benefiting from the same high levels of quality design and technology.

The Corolla also retains a competitive advantage in being the only model range in its segment to offer full hybrid electric power, technology that delivers the kind of fuel efficiency and zero emission driving capability that are fast-growing priorities for customers.

Fresh Design

Each Corolla body type has its own look and appeal. The new range gains a more refined and contemporary

appearance with changes to the front grille mesh pattern, fog light bezels and alloy wheel designs. Higher grades of the hatchback and Touring Sports models gain new bi-LED headlights; on High grade these come with an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS).

The exterior color choices include three new color’s inspired by current trends in architecture, product design and fashion. Juniper Blue is the new key color for the hatchback and Touring Sports, with a vibrant, flaring tone. When viewed close-up, it reveals red undertones which create a fresh effect with subtle changes in color. For the sedan there is new green Midnight Teal, an elegant finish that reveals a special shade effect when viewed from the right perspective. Metallic Grey, available for all body types, is a timeless shade with wide appeal, its appeal enhanced by dark silver flakes in the paint.

For the interior, the mood is more modern and premium with new graphics, trims and embossed patterns that add three-dimensional depth and tactile appeal to the upholsteries, surfaces, and finishes. The trim and seat upholstery combinations follow new Dark and Light Harmony (depending on body type) (2) themes with coordinated colors and finishes to give the cabin a contemporary, elegant feel.

Fifth Generation Toyota Hybrid Electric Technology

The New Corolla features the fifth generation of Toyota’s world-leading self-charging, full hybrid electric system. As with the current model, 1.8 and 2.0-litre hybrid systems are available. Both benefit from significant changes to their engine and electric motor that enhance the driving experience with extra power, improved performance and drivability, and same or lower CO2 emissions (depending on the powertrain). The power control unit (PCU) and transaxle motor have been redesigned and the lithium-ion battery is more powerful, yet smaller and lighter (mass reduced by up to 18 kg, depending on the powertrain).

Total power from the 1.8-litre system is 140 DIN hp, bringing a 1.7-second reduction in the 0-100 km/h time to 9.2 seconds. Despite this performance increase, CO2 emissions are expected to be unchanged at 102 g/km. For the 2.0-litre system, total output has risen to 196 DIN hp and almost half a second has been shaved from the 0100 km/h time, taking it down to 7.5 seconds. A reduction of 3 g/km in the combined cycle CO2 figure is expected, to 107 g/km.

Improved Drivability and Acceleration

Further steps have been taken to deliver acceleration that feels natural and rewarding to the driver. Previously, the focus was on linear acceleration; now, recalibration of the hybrid control has produced acceleration that more closely mirrors the driver’s intention and their use of the throttle pedal, producing the appropriate G-sensation and an intuitive feel. This has been achieved with a reduction in engine speed during acceleration. Powertrain noise under acceleration has also been quietened.

The User Experience

The New Corolla benefits from Toyota’s latest digital and multimedia features, designed for a better user experience and future-proofed so that new features and upgrades can be introduced with seamless over-the-air updates.

The enlarged, 10.5-inch multimedia display presents graphics in high definition and has an anti-glare screen, ensuring excellent visibility in all lighting conditions. Starting from the Mid-grade(2) the driver’s instrument display has also undergone a transformation with a new 12.3-inch combimeter that can be customized to the driver’s preference in four different modes: Casual, Smart, Sport and Tough.

Cars come with an inclusive four years’ access to Toyota Smart Connect or Toyota Smart Connect+ (according to model grade), giving access to “always on” cloud navigation and real-time traffic and journey information.

The driver can also make use of a new on-board voice agent that recognizes natural, conversational requests to operate the multimedia, or vehicle functions such as opening or closing windows. Also, a number of remote services are available using the MyT app, allowing drivers to use their smartphone to lock or unlock their car, operate the climate control to heat or cool the cabin prior to a journey, activate the hazard lights and locate their vehicle.

Enhanced Safety and Driver Assistance

The New Corolla is equipped with Toyota T-Mate, which combines the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense package with other active driving and parking assistance systems which not only make driving easier and safer, but also helps protect all the vehicle’s occupants and other road users.

Improvements in the operation and functionality of the systems include Acceleration Suppression, which reacts to sudden use of the accelerator when travelling at low speed; collision avoidance support when making a turn at an intersection; Emergency Steering Assist that can now react to oncoming vehicles; lateral collision avoidance and curve speed reduction.

Over-the-air software updates will keep the functions up-to-date and enable new ones to be added as they become available during the vehicle’s lifetime.

The Toyota T-Mate features include a Safe Exit Assist system. This will trigger a warning if it detects a door being opened into the path of a vehicle or cyclist approaching from the rear.

There is also a new Rear Seat Reminder which will alert the driver before they leave their car that they may need to check if they have left something on the back seats.

Corolla GR Sport

Since its introduction in 2020, the GR SPORT grade has proved highly successful in delivering a sportier profile for Corolla and extending the car’s appeal, in particular helping attract new customers to the Toyota brand. More than 20,000 have been sold to date.

Inspired by TOYOTA GAZOO RACING, the GR SPORT has a more powerful look that accentuates the Corolla’s sharp, dynamic styling with unique exterior and interior design elements.

The new Corolla GR SPORT has new-design 18-inch machined alloy wheels and a new-look rear bumper and under-guard. The seats in the hatchback and Touring Sports versions have a fresh finish with the GR logo embossed in the headrest and a new micro-hexagon pattern in the silver ribbons along the edge of the bolster and cushion. The GR logo is also added to the push-button starter.

The New Corolla range will go on sale in Europe during the first quarter of 2023.

2023 Hyundai Elantra Limited

As we inch closer to a future of more Electric Vehicles (EVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are a winning recipe that touts some of the best fuel mileage numbers we’ve seen in vehicles like the latest Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.

After experiencing many variations of the new seventh generation Hyundai Elantra, including the raucous performance oriented Elantra N, there’s a lot of respect for the brand’s compact sedan. The affordable segment is a welcome sight. Now, in experiencing the new Elantra HEV, there’s even more respect earned for a vehicle that often surpasses its EPA-estimated fuel consumption numbers in the real world to best most of its competition.

The new Hyundai Elantra for its seventh generation already has an excellent platform as I have experienced in many previous reviews of the vehicle in its gaspowered non-hybrid trim levels. Having the hybrid version of the Elantra this week takes a different approach for the platform where it utilizes its sleek design to benefit from decent aerodynamics having a drag coefficient of 0.28 retaining much of the sleek looks of other trim levels. The Elantra Hybrid comes in two trim levels, Blue and Limited. My Limited trim gets updated LED headlights, a dark chrome front grille, and larger 17-inch alloy wheels.

Performance and Driving Character

Having a solid platform to work with, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid feels decent out on the road only

hampered by a powertrain that isn’t very eager to get things moving. Working with the combined power output of 139 horsepower there isn’t much to inspire performance. However, the hybrid system seems to fill the power void areas of its 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that by itself produces 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque, which then equates to a total of 195 lb-ft of torque. Power is directed to the front wheels only and the transmission is a neat choice of a 6-speed automated dual-clutch that does well to manage the power where you often don’t notice the shifting, which is a good thing.

The electric motor alone can produce 43 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque which helps get the Elantra Hybrid out of the hole initially pretty well but isn’t followed up with anything substantial as you climb past 25 mph and up to 60 mph, which takes about 8.8 seconds to hit 60 mph from a stop. Fundamentally, you’re not going to win any races with the Elantra Hybrid, but it is zippy enough to not be dangerous.

The handling and ride quality seems to make up for the lackluster bit of power where the Elantra Hybrid handles well feeling like the chassis can handle a lot more along with having a decent ride quality and stability at Interstate speeds. The only fault I find in the drivetrain, apart from the Elantra Hybrid not exactly being “quick,” is the braking feel sometimes is not as seamless as I would like in its transitions from the regenerative braking and use of the friction brakes. Otherwise, the

hybrid system works wonderfully keeping a decent reserve of battery power and often utilizing the battery power over the engine to retain most speeds.

The Elantra Hybrid’s sophistication is often a seamless experience where you hardly notice transitions from the electric motor to the gas engine, or gear shifts for that matter. There’s a welcomed quietness also where the Elantra Hybrid feels almost premium even with the gas engine running. When the gas engine shuts down the only sounds you hear are the eco-friendly tires and a faint bit of wind noise.

Fuel Economy: The new Hyundai Elantra Hybrid shines for its exceptional fuel economy where the EPA estimates of 49 mpg city, 52 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined, which are often bested in real-world driving. I saw my highway figure as high as 54 mpg and in the city, I saw an average of 52.4 mpg. The hybrid system is easy to learn for its engine engagements and allows you to muster out better mpg numbers with some smart planning on your drives. With those figures, you get an exceptional range of up about 572 miles on just one 11gallon tank of regular unleaded fuel.

The only thing I wish Hyundai would do is mark on the power meter how much throttle you can give the vehicle to utilize the battery power before it kicks over to the gas engine. Such a marking on the power gauge like Toyota does would help as far as power management to potentially get even better mpg out of the Elantra Hybrid, which is already a surprise to beat out the EPA figures.

Interior and Technology: Having covered where the new Hyundai Elantra is a winning formula for a compact sedan, I’m happy to see that the interior remains

virtually the same in the new Elantra Hybrid. There aren’t any surprising aspects about the Interior being any different than other Elantra gas-powered non-hybrid trims in the new Elantra HEV. There’s a welcoming space in the cabin of the Elantra with a surprising amount of space for a compact sedan and a lot of forward and rearward adjustment for the heated and ventilated front seats allowing you to find the optimal driving position – even for someone who is over 6 feet tall like myself.

There’s the welcomed infotainment system in the Elantra Hybrid featuring the 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster replaces where the RPM gauge is usually displayed with the hybrid power meter.

In the area of safety, the new Elantra Hybrid comes with all of the expected active safety features minus a surround-view 360 camera in place of a traditional rearward camera view, which removes the availability of the clever live-view blind-spot monitor system. Otherwise, you still have the welcoming blind-spot monitors, lane departure warning/keep assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, safe exit warning, forward collision warning/emergency braking, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and smart cruise control with stop & go and a highway driving assist feature.

Price: Further making the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid a winning recipe, the pricing for the base Blue trim starts at just $24,400 whereas the loaded-up Elantra Hybrid Limited trim comes in at $29,000 before any fees where you will be expected to pay almost $31,000 when you tally up the destination/freight charges.

Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance

I’ve always been a fan of Lexus and the unrelenting quality put into their vehicles that naturally remain at the top of the list for reliability. When it comes to performance, Lexus has always been conservative and such a position has done well for a myriad of buyers who don’t mind the specs of competition outdoing them. For their compact luxury sedan, the Lexus IS, there’s been much of a want from enthusiasts to bring back the IS F and shove the glorious sewing machine-smooth 5.0-liter V8 under the hood. Well, for the 2022 model year, their wish somewhat comes true but again in a conservative package, the new IS 500 F Sport Performance.

Performance and Driving Character

The Lexus IS has always been a favorite of mine ever since its conception as the 2001 IS 300 giving us a taste of the old Supra-inspired inline 6-cylinder engine. Since then, the Lexus IS has grown in its maturity and retained a compact size but brought us the IS F in 2008 with a 5.0-liter V8 under the hood. While that V8 was still down on power compared to direct competition, it stood the test of time and now we have the latest iteration of that engine that produces 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The powertrain, in its rear-wheel-drive only configuration with a naturally aspirated V8, is something that gives Lexus major points from the enthusiast community as being one of the very last forms of such a raw luxury vehicle. In that, the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is more of a subtle step in the performance arena not to compete with the definitive performance kings in the form of the BMW M3, Mercedes-AMG C63 Sedan, or even the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. No, the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is what its name signifies, “F Sport” instead of the real deal “F” vehicle from Lexus such as the RC F. That means it runs with the BMW M340i, the AMG C43 Sedan, and the Caddy CT4-V (non-Blackwing).

If you think about it, that makes the IS 500 F Sport Performance somewhat the king of its class because all of those competitors don’t have a V8 or the horsepower numbers to match. Smart play, Lexus!

When it comes down to sheer performance, the Lexus IS 500 is a gem for being a grand touring compact luxury machine. The 5.0-liter V8 engine is glorious in that it emits a delightful intake manifold growl around its midrange RPM that’s only accentuated by an artificial sound via an adjustable Active Sound Control (ASC) system. Though, if you turn off the ASC system, you’ll still be left with an amazing harmonic burble from under the bulging aluminum hood as you climb into the revs and start smiling just above 7,000 rpm. This V8, the same power mill found in the canceled Lexus GS F, the current Lexus LC 500, and RC F, is music to an enthusiast’s ears, and that makes up for its softer performance qualities.

Those soft performance qualities are filtered through the entirety of the new Lexus IS 500, which is essentially a Lexus IS 350 F Sport but with a V8 engine. There are a few other traits that make the IS 500 its own vehicle, such as the hood bulge to clear the V8 engine, a noticeable oil cooler hiding behind the menacing-looking dark spindle mesh grille up front, and the unique staggered and stacked quad exhaust tips out back.

Demanding power from the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is a strange thing as you’re required to lay far into the gas pedal for the proper throttle response when you’re already moving. The 8-speed automatic transmission doesn’t want to downshift as you like until you push hard on the throttle through a kick-down notch before you get to the proper lower gear. While you still get full throttle before reaching the kick-down on the gas pedal, there’s somewhat of a disappointment from the transmission’s lack to downshift to the lowest possible gear – and this is a returning character flaw of Lexus. Initial throttle response from a stop is instant and permits a clean

0-60 mph run taking 4.4 seconds. Overall, performance is decent and the IS 500 bites back with just enough grip even though its suspension is soft even in the firmed-up damper setting for its adaptive suspension. The softness translates into an excellent ride quality, probably the best in a vehicle of this small size that I’ve experienced.

Fuel Economy

The fuel efficiency in the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is not too bad considering you have a beefy V8 to play with. Though, pushing that V8 hard will have the IS 500 sucking down copious amounts of premium fuel and you’ll never match those EPA estimates of 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. If you drive the IS 500 as a commuter, which it does comfortably around town, you’ll easily match those figures but don’t expect to muster out much more than what’s stated on paper in the real world.

Interior and Tech

Inside of the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is the same cabin, layout, and aged switchgear from when the current third-generation Lexus IS was introduced in 2014. Of course, since then, the IS has received refreshing updates for its exterior that are quite attractive in my view. However, the interior remains to have a good fit and finish with plenty of soft-touch surfaces but here many areas can be improved upon, and only so much that the small updates can do to keep the IS fresh. For starters, the infotainment unit, once being the vehicle’s biggest complaint in using a cumbersome touchpad interface, now has a 10.3-inch touchscreen interface. While the touchscreen essentially uses the same menu sets and functions of the past, there is still the touchpad interface present even if you don’t have to use it much. I will say, there’s something good about having a vehicle where everything works 100% of the time in knowing how many modern infotainment units have so many annoying glitches and software bugs on other vehicles. The Lexus IS 500 will have none of those, and its build quality shows as a vehicle that will probably outlast

most cars on the road for respectable maintenance costs. Additionally, there are the expected active safety features including adaptive cruise control all included.

The gauge cluster is the same old unit, which I must say has aged well considering it is fully digital and has the unique sliding center RPM section – all derived from the Lexus LFA supercar from many years back. There are also the welcoming aspects of having a plethora of physical buttons and knobs and a unique automatic climate control touch-capacitive temp slider.

The seating areas are somewhat tidy for the most part as they have traditionally been in the Lexus IS but the seating remains comfy with some welcoming bolster support in the front sporty heated and ventilated seats with plenty forward and aft travel. The back-seating area is very small with limited legroom if you have two average to large size adults sitting up front. Thankfully the rear 60/40 seatbacks fold down for added cargo room as the trunk is only 10.8 cubic feet with the seats in place.

What is so surprising about the Lexus IS 500 is that even though it is still based on an old platform, it continues to turn heads and remains quite unique in the scheme of competitors. Additionally, the IS 500 F Sport Performance could very well pave the way for a full-on IS F but my bets are kept at bay as time marches on towards an EV future and the IS 500 F Sport Performance could very well be one of the very last 4-door naturally aspirated V8 vehicles around. Put that in your exhaust pipes and smoke it!

Pricing

The pricing scale for the Lexus IS has remained competitive and adding a V8 engine doesn’t make things get outrageous as you would think considering how some of the IS 500’s German competition stacks pricing and options. The new 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance starts at $57,575 before any fees and my IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium trim test vehicle with very limited options comes to about $62,670.

2023 Mazda CX 9 Signature AWD

The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row midsize SUV and currently the largest SUV in the automaker's lineup, sitting above the recently introduced Mazda CX-50. An all-new three-row crossover SUV dubbed the CX-90 is on the horizon, which could mean the CX-9's days are numbered. But for 2023, at leasttheCX-9 is still in the mix.

Fuel cost Estimation: This year's CX-9 receives only minor changes. The most significant of them is that the base trim level, the Sport, is no longer available. That means the former next-step-up Touring is now the least expensive CX-9 trim on offer and, as such, the CX-9's entry-level price is a few thousand dollars more than most rival three-row SUVs. But you are getting a pleasingly well-equipped SUV out of the deal. Plus, updates over the past few years such as standard allwheel drive and an upgraded infotainment system have done a lot to keep it from falling behind in a highly competitive class.

Just about every mainstream automaker has an SUV in this class so it takes a lot for a product to stand out. Some of Edmunds' top picks include the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot and Volkswagen Atlas. If you don't need a third row (and the CX-9's is one of the least spacious third rows around), the new Mazda CX-50 looks and feels a bit more modern than the aging CX-9. But no other three-row looks and feels quite like the CX9. It's sporty, sure, but it's also quiet and comfortable on the road, enhancing the premium feel even further.

What's it like to live with? When Mazda last redesigned the CX-9 for the 2016 model year, we took

one into our long-term fleet for a full year. Over the course of 22,000 miles, we learned plenty about what's great about the CX-9 and what's not. Note that while there have been some changes to the CX-9 since 2016, most of our observations still apply.

Our Verdict: The Mazda CX-9 is one of the more distinctive three-row midsize SUVs, prioritizing style and driving experience. It also comes closest to closing the gap with the luxury brands with its impressive cabin materials and design. It falls short when it comes to cargo, utility, and third-row accommodations, which seem like important things on a midsize-SUV shopper's list. And it's a big reason why it isn't higher up the ranks. How does the CX-9 drive: The Mazda CX-9 feels like a smaller midsize SUV in many ways, including the way it drives. It's a bit more athletic than competitors on a winding road, with confident brake response, and it's easy to maneuver in tighter confines. The all-wheeldrive system is tuned mainly for inclement road conditions, but it can handle your weekend "softroading" excursions.

There's a sufficient amount of power on tap that's available right off the line, delivering great response when you need to get going. Accelerating to 60 mph takes 7.6 seconds, which is good for a three-row midsize SUV, and the transmission shifts smoothly, making for a seamless daily driver experience.

How comfortable is the CX-9?Whether you're commuting or taking a long road trip, the CX-9 delivers

a good degree of comfort. Much of the credit goes to the smooth ride, which strikes a balance between sporty and compliant. Taller tire sidewalls contribute to this balance, helping provide cushion against road imperfections. Inside, the CX-9 has well-sculpted front seats that offer ample support, but it's worth noting the third row is quite small and not as comfortable as many competitors' back rows. The cabin, however, is luxurylevel quiet, which is impressive. Our test car's climate control is easy to use, but it might not blow cold enough if you have polar bear blood running through your veins. The heated and ventilated front seats work decently, and rear passengers have access to climate controls for their area.

How’s the interior? The Mazda CX-9's interior is thoughtfully designed, simple and elegant, and a benchmark for non-luxury SUVs. The primary controls are easy to reach and use. The main control dial is instantly intuitive and provides quick navigation within the menus of the sharp-looking 9-inch infotainment display.

Getting in and out of the CX-9 is easy, and access to the third row is much improved thanks to new secondrow captain's chairs available in the Signature trim. The first and second rows have a good amount of room, but the third row is best reserved for kids. Visibility isn't quite as open as in other SUVs because of the CX-9's thickish pillars and a rear window that's on the smaller side.

How’s the tech? The optional Bose stereo system delivers clear and powerful sound. Smartphones are easy to pair and quick to be recognized on startup. There are also plenty of USB ports to keep everyone's devices charged six total in our top trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard.

All CX-9s come loaded with advanced safety and driver aids such as adaptive cruise, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, forward collision warning and lane keeping assistance. They're well-tuned to deal with heavy traffic, and false alarms are rare. Adaptive cruise and lane keeping work well to relieve the burden of heavy traffic.

How’s the storage? The CX-9 falls behind the competition in cargo and utility. The 14.4 cubic feet behind the third row could be adequate for many shoppers, but for comparison, there's 21 cubic feet in the class-leading Kia Telluride. Max cargo is equally short, with 71.2 cubic feet in the CX-9 and 87 cubes in the

Telluride. Thoughtful interior design makes the CX-9 easy to live with and growing families should find adequate space for all their things. Door pockets and cupholders are nicely sized. Car seats are easy to install with the second-row captain's chairs. There's a good amount of room for any size car seat, even large rearfacing ones. If you plan to do much towing, the CX-9 doesn't lead in that area, maxing out at a lower-thanaverage 3,500 pounds.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA fuel economy rating for our all-wheel-drive CX-9 is 23 mpg combined (20 city/26 highway), which is slightly better than average for this class. We were mostly able to hit those fuel economy targets, but they can be easy to miss if you're heavy-footed. If saving money is more of a priority than max engine power, the CX-9 has the ability to run on regular octane fuel.

Is the CX-9 a good value? The CX-9 is definitely among the leaders in terms of its build quality, especially in top Signature trim. Entry-level models are generally more expensive than the competition, but the Mazda justifies the higher cost by including more standard features. It's priced fairly competitively at the top end, and the interior closely resembles a luxury-class cabin thanks to exquisite materials, uniform gaps, and clean, elegant design. The exterior paint is well done too. Warranty coverage and ownership benefits such as roadside assistance are pretty standard for the class.

The Mazda CX-9 Signature is a standout in the threerow midsize SUV class, mostly for its striking design and relatively engaging driving experience. It feels decently athletic through corners but not at the expense of ride comfort. It's the most original offering in the segment.

Which CX-9 does Ella recommend? The Mazda CX-9 has long been a bit more expensive than its rivals, but the higher price is offset by a greater number of standard features. That's especially true of this year's model, as the previously midtier Touring model becomes the new base trim. We rather like this introductory model, which has a generous level of standard content. We'd spend a little extra for the Touring Plus model, however, which adds ventilated seats and a third-row bench among other extras.

cautiously signal right and slide into that far righthand lane, the officer will speed up and zoom past you in hot pursuit of someone really breaking the law. Alas, he stays behind you and you face reality, that bitter, always present friend, and pull into the next available driveway.

Ever have those days when you wake up and think, this is not my life. This cannot be my life. This is not how I pictured things would look at this stage. First of all, I pictured myself thinner. Much thinner... and, somehow, just smarter. Future me was very happilymarriedtoa veryhandsomemanwho thoughtthat I hung the moon, a man who appreciated my subtle quirks and found my wit captivating. I was independently wealthy and only had to work outside the home if I felt like it. The bills were paid, my children had grown into well-adjusted, productive adults with lovely families AND homes of their own. Reality is a bitter companion.

As you can guess, my current life resembles exactly zero items in the above run-down. Not going to talk about the weight, draw your own conclusions, and after 50 something years, I'm still not quite sure how to properly fix my hair. And I'm single, single, single, so very single. Sigh. My incredibly intelligent son lives with me still (thank God he doesn't have a family because they'd probably be living with me, too.) After this wretched lock-down, post-Covid nightmare I'm not only NOT independently wealthy I'm workingmultiple jobs and side gigs to survive.

Any of this sound familiar? We all have our Hot Mess Moments... for some of us, they last years. But let's just decide to keep going and seek out the amusing side of it all. Hopefully, this little corner of type will give you a brief break from your reality and you can laugh with me at mine.

This is where I sat when the officer cautiously approached my driver's side window. Faithful to his training that there was the chance that I was going to pull a fully loaded Glock from under my seat and start blasting away, he stayed just far enough back to be able to beat a hasty retreat should such a barrage ensue. Smiling pleasantly he asked me how I was doing today. I smiled pleasantly back and said I was doing very well, that is until he pulled me over. He nodded knowingly and kindly accepted the driver's license I extended as a peace offering. He informed me, in a fake shocked tone that he had clocked me driving 48 mph in a 35-mph zone. I was incredulous. oh how could this possibly be?? He smiled as he retreated to his vehicle presumably to discover how many states I might be wanted in and I was left to contemplate how many more Door Dash deliveries I was going to have to make before I got this ticket paid off. It was going to be a lot. After givingmesufficient timeto reflect onall thebad choices I had made in my life that had gotten me to this place, he sauntered back up to my window. He had good news. "Ms. McKinney, I'm just going to give you a warning today. Yes, you were speeding but you were actually going with the flow of traffic. You were just unfortunate enough to be at the back of the pack where I could catch you. I would highly advise you next time to be at the front." I promised with all my heart I would indeed strive to do as he advised.

So, my friends, we may not always feel like we have it all together but we are in good company. We all have our Hot Mess Moments... I say we go big or go homelet's try to stay out in the front of the pack.
