Welcome back, Girl Scouts! Welcome back to the great big sisterhood that is Girl Scouts. Even though this year will be a little different than years past, Girl Scouts of all ages still have a lot to look forward to. In fact, given various school situations, Girl Scouts may be an even better opportunity than before for social and emotional engagement with a lot of fun and leadership learning along the way. This new Back to Girl Scouts magazine will walk you through activities and events your girl can experience in person, virtually, and a hybrid of both, as well as an ever-growing online catalog of options for council-sponsored program. Traditionally at this time of year you would be receiving a program guide, however, due to many of our partners still navigating reopening, we’ve decided an online option will be better to keep you constantly up-to-date. We encourage you to bookmark www.girlscoutsindiana.org/calendar and visit often as our program team will be creating new content daily. Please help us grow the Girl Scout sisterhood by shouting from the roof tops, sharing on social media, and telling your neighbors and friends. Girl Scouts is a safe, small group experience that is a perfect companion to the classroom. It’s something girls can look forward to, count on, and use to get out from behind a screen. When sports, clubs, and activities are all still in flux, we are not. At Girl Scouts, we are here, we are camping, we are learning, we are badge earning, and so much more. Yours in Girl Scouting,

Danielle Shockey CEO, Girl Scouts of Central Indiana

What to Expect in Girl Scouts This Year Troop Meetings Girls feel connected when they meet regularly with their troop. If possible, we recommend troops meet consistently at least twice a month: once in-person and once either virtually or as an outing. Some girls and parents may not feel comfortable returning to in-person meetings quite yet, and that’s OK. No matter if you meet in a public location or virtually, we have resources to help you. If your troop needs assistance, please complete the Back to Troop form on our website. Use the Back to Troop Form to: 1. Help you find a meeting place. 2. Request reimbursement for meeting location fees (1/month). 3. Request a Zoom license for $3/month.

COVID-19 Guidelines We want everyone to have a fun and safe year. Please follow our COVID-19 guidelines before, during, and after all troop activities.

Before Troop Meetings Mandatory Anyone with a fever of at least 100 degrees or any other COVID-19 symptom cannot attend. Suggested Weather permitting, seek an outdoor meeting space. No carpooling. Girls should limit items brought from home.

During Troop Meetings Mandatory Wash hands when arriving and before leaving. No-touch rule. No friendship squeezes, high fives, handshakes, or other physical contact. No shared water coolers or drinking stations. Serve only prepackaged food. Gloves should be worn when serving. If someone displays symptoms during the meeting, immediately isolate them. Record attendance at every meeting, include date and beginning and ending time. The Volunteer Toolkit can help with this. Suggested All participants should wear a mask when not actively participating in a physical activity unless outside and able to properly social distance.

After Troop Meetings Virtual Troop Meetings and Resources This year we’ve seen our leaders and girls creatively stay together when we couldn’t meet, and we want to help continue the fun! This year the Volunteer Toolkit has badges and activities designed for virtual meetings. Look for the WiFi icon next to an activity to choose virtual. Be sure to check out the Virtual Meeting Resources in the Volunteer Toolkit and Safety Activity Checkpoints to ensure your troop is safe when meeting online. 345405 Back_to_School_Magazine_Fall_2020.indd 4

Mandatory Sanitize all surfaces, tools, and equipment before and after use. If an attendee tests positive for COVID-19, the troop leader must contact Meg Booth at 317.924.6839 within 24 hours. Do not contact troop members; GSCI staff will confidentially contact all involved. Suggested Communicate regularly with families about current conditions and plans for the next meeting. Continue to assess troop family’s willingness to meet in-person.

A Sweet Guarantee! While many of the things she was looking forward to are canceled, Girl Scouts is still here. When choosing to sign up your troop for another year, know that Girl Scouts of Central Indiana (GSCI) understands the hard decisions and uncertainty parents are facing. That is why for the 2021 membership year, we are offering a money-back guarantee. If your troop* renews by September 18 and a girl decides she would like to sit this year out, GSCI will refund her membership back to the troop (valid until 10/31). Additionally, as you open your troop to new girls and invite them to join the fun, if she were to decide by Halloween that this wasn’t the “sweet” experience she was hoping for, we will refund her money as well (valid until 10/31). *Troops who received the spring renewal incentive of $50 are not eligible for the troop guarantee.

Financial Assistance Girl Scouts of Central Indiana believes Girl Scouting should be accessible to all girls. We’re committed to providing financial assistance to any girl in need; whether that’s with a yearly membership, help buying a uniform or other necessary supplies, or assistance in a council program. Through the generosity of our community partners, families, and volunteers, we can remove the financial barriers preventing a girl from joining Girl Scouts. Visit www.girlscoutsindiana.org/support to learn more about how you can help. 345405 Back_to_School_Magazine_Fall_2020.indd 5

Fall Product Program Bravely Be You and Trust Your Strengths!

Participating in the Fall Product Program is a positive learning experience that allows girls to utilize and learn goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. The product program is also a great financial tool allowing troops to fund activities throughout the program year. To give you a little more information we talked to a Girl Scout Junior in the field! Q: What items do you sell during the fall sale? A: We sell nuts, candy, and magazines to our friends and family. Q: What is the 2020 animal mascot? A: A sloth! Did you know pygmy three-toed sloths can extend their tongues 10 to 12 inches out of their mouths?! Q: Do you earn fun rewards for selling Fall Product? What has you most excited? A: Yes! I am most excited about the sloth socks & scrunchies at $500 and the sloth meet & greet at $850! Q: We heard about a program called ZOOanthropy. What is ZOOanthropy? A: ZOOanthropy is where you can donate to the Indianapolis Zoo to help them purchase supplies and food for animals like the sloths, dolphins, and many more! If you opt-in to ZOOanthropy you can help the Indianapolis Zoo AND earn the cute sloth-themed ZOOanthropy patch.
