She currently produces TV shows and documentaries for the European market. She also produces live feeds from California for the German news station N24.

Sophie is majoring in Journalism, French and International Studies at the Missouri School of Journalism. Gabi Hegan is the founder of CityKinder. com, a lifestyle and community website for German-speaking parents in the New York City metropolitan area. Starting out as a journalist in 1982 in Germany, Alexander was trained in photography, editing and reporting for print, TV and radio. n Chancellor Merkel Announces First Federal Law on Integration

or the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany there is to be a federal law on integration, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced in Berlin on April 15, 2016. The governing coalition of Germany has agreed on packages of integration and anti-terrorism measures, as well as other legislative proposals, but those initiatives still need to come to a vote by the Bundestag. The chancellor stressed that the new law will embrace services offered to refugees, but will also focus on the duties of citizenship that the refugees will be required to meet in the integration process. Failure to comply with these duties will lead to cuts in welfare benefits. For instance, it is crucial that refugees learn German and that they get trained on a job. Not everybody can stay in Germany without meeting these standards, stressed the chancellor. n Read full article on www.germany.info

n Fewer Asylum Seekers Entering Germany

he number of refugees seeking asylum entering Germany in the first three months of 2016 has dropped considerably – in fact by 66 percent. In the first quarter of 2016, a total of 170,000 asylum seekers arrived in Germany, as compared to about 500,000 in the last three months of 2015, reported Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière. “It is important on the one hand to integrate refugees with good prospects of staying in Germany more rapidly,” said de Maizière, “while on the other ensuring that those who have no prospects of staying are returned more swiftly to their own countries.” Commenting on the number of asylum seekers from the Western Balkan states, he reported that one year ago this group accounted for 61 percent of the total. Now they account for only 5 percent of requests for asylum. “This is a clear indication that the classification of the Balkan states as safe countries of origin is having the desired effect,” he said. n Source: German Information Center – www.Germany.info

n One Million Electric Vehicles on German Roads by 2020: Germany Wants to Become the Leader in Electromobility

n April 27, 2016, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble announced that Germans who buy an electric car would receive a 4,000 euro subsidy and those who buy petrol-electric hybrids would receive a 2,000 euro subsidy. The German government will finance 50 percent of the subsidy, while the car industry will finance the other half. The subsidies are part of a 1.2 billion euro package to bring e-cars to German roads. The subsidies will be granted to e-car buyers until 2019. In addition, the German government will invest 300 million euros between 2017 and 2020 to increase the number of charging stations in Germany by 15,000. Economic Minister Sigmar Gabriel said the new plan should bring the number of e-cars in Germany to at least 500,000, which would make Germany a much larger market for electric vehicles. n

Hans-Dietrich Genscher Dies on April 2, 2016 (AP/dpa) On April 17, domestic and foreign dignitaries paid their respects to former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher at his state funeral. One of Germany’s longest-serving foreign ministers and one of the key architects of the reunification, Genscher died at 89 on April 2.

erman Chancellor Angela Merkel and former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, among nearly 800 others, were in attendance at the funeral held at the World Conference Center in Bonn (the former capital of West Germany before Berlin became the capital after German unification in 1990). “Genscher was a German patriot and a committed European. He was a blessing for our country,” German President Joachim Gauck said during the service. James Baker, the U.S. secretary of state under President George Bush from 1988-1992, told those in attendance that Genscher’s contribution to German unification had been indispensable. “As we say in Texas, he could be as tough as the leather on a cowboy’s boot,” Baker recalled. Genscher served as foreign minister, first of West Germany and then of the reunited nation, for 18 years under chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl. “European unity is the answer to the mistakes of the Germans and of European history,” Genscher stated as he announced his retirement

from parliament in 1998. “It is the answer to a terrible world war. These reasons stand even today.” Genscher was also clear about the lessons Germany had learned from the horrors of its Nazi past. “I have always considered it my generation’s responsibility to prevent a repetition of the events of the period from 1933 to 1945 in Germany, committed by Germany,” he wrote in his memoir. “That task will go on in perpetuity. We must prevent even a relapse into a new nationalism.” Genscher was born March 21, 1927, in Reideburg, near the eastern city of Halle. Drafted into the regular German army in the final months of WWII, he was captured by American forces in 1945 and imprisoned in Britain. After the war, he studied law at Leipzig University, but became disenchanted with communist East Germany and escaped to the West in 1952. n

U.S. Primaries 2016:

If Germany Could Vote A commentary by Prof. Dr. Harry Friebel The primaries for the U.S. presidency are in full swing and Germany has joined the discussion – in newspapers and magazines, in online media, in debates on social media and blogs, and even in special surveys. The media provide the German public with a never-ending flood of news and commentary.

he presidential election in the U.S. focuses more on the selection of a person than of a party program. Nevertheless, the issues of immigration, the economy, gun control and health care have emerged repeatedly throughout the campaign, particularly in numerous televised debates. According to a representative survey by YouGov Germany1, 15 percent of the German population would like to have “a U.S.-style campaign.” Nearly two-thirds (62 percent) say “I approve of the way campaigns are run in Germany.” Nevertheless, according to YouGov, 32 percent of respondents are following the campaign in the U.S. “rather closely” or “very closely.” It is generally expected in Germany that the election on November 8 will be a duel between the former U.S. Secretary of State Clinton and real-estate tycoon Donald Trump. Between the two parties, as well as within the Republican Party, an inexorable elimination competition is taking place. The media in the U.S. foment this battle even further. An appeal to moderation by President Obama as part of his final State of the Union address has been roundly ignored. Concerned, he said at the time that “the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better,”2 and that the future of the United States will only be positive “if we fix our politics.” 3 Three surveys on the preferences of Germans for the 45th president of the U.S. come to similar conclusions:

The magazine STERN reported on the results of its own survey “Germany Chooses” that 80 percent of Germans would vote for Clinton and 20 percent for Trump.

•

Based on a survey by “TNS EMNID,” the TV station ntv reports that

“Germans would choose Hillary Clinton for president.”4 More than three-fourths would cast their vote for her – while only one in twenty would vote for Donald Trump.

Clear differences between East and West Germany also emerge, as well as with regard to German party preferences: Clinton does best in West Germany and among supporters of the Greens, the Left Party and the SPD. Trump receives considerably more support in the East and among supporters of the AfD party (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany). The slogans used by Trump and the AfD are very similar. While Trump proclaims, “I will build a great wall on our southern border,” the AfD declares, “We need a fence for protection on the border with Austria.” The AfD is a right-wing populist party that was newly founded in 2015. In 2016, due to the escalation of the refugee crisis, it has developed into the third most-popular nationwide power. The party now holds seats in the parliaments of all German federal states that have held elections in 2016. As part of an additional Europe-wide survey by YouGov, over 8,000 people in the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway were asked how they would react if either Trump or Clinton won the election. A victory by Trump would make 46 percent “scared,” 40 percent “disappointed” and 27 percent “sad.” Conversely, an election victory by Clinton would lead 40 percent to feel “relief,” 40 percent “optimistic” and 20 percent “happy.” This emotional connection of the respondents is astonishing. The overall message of all surveys is clear: Old Europe wants Hillary Clinton to emerge victorious. President Barack Obama agrees, recently remarking, “I continue to believe that Mr. Trump will not be president. The reason is that I believe in the American people.”5 n

August wird die Olympische Fackel bei der Eröffnungsfeier im Maracana-Station in Rio de Janeiro eintreffen. Das Olympische Feuer war am 21. April im Heiligen Hain des antiken Olympia in Griechenland in einer traditionellen Zeremonie entzündet worden. Danach hatte die Flamme Zwischenstation am Sitz des Internationalen Olympischen Komitee (IOC) in Lausanne gemacht. Das Organisationskomitee sagt, die Marktforschung habe eine Unterstützungsrate für die Spiele von 70 Prozent ermittelt. Olympic Flame Reaches Brazil

The Olympic torch will be carried through all of Brazil’s 26 states in advance of the summer games. A Syrian refugee child is one of the torchbearers.

he Olympic flame arrived in Brazil three months before the start of the summer games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff promised that the summer games would be a great success, despite a “very difficult, critical period in the history of (Brazil’s) democracy,” according to the Associated Press. The head of state is currently facing an impeachment process. In a government press release, she said Brazil was aware of political instability, but athletes and tourists could nevertheless expect to be “warmly welcomed.” “We have created every condition to provide the finest hospitality for all athletes and all visitors from other countries,” Rousseff was quoted in an EBC Agencia Brasil article. Bearers will carry the Olympic flame through 300 cities in all 26 states of the host country. Hanan Khaled Daqqah, 12, is one of the 12,000 torchbearers. She fled the war in Syria with her family and found a new home in Brazil. On August 5, the Olympic torch will arrive at Maracanã Stadium for the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

The Olympic flame was lit during a traditional ceremony at antique Olympia’s sacred grove in Greece on April 21. The flame then stopped at the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne. The organizational committee said that market research showed a 70 percent approval rating for the games. Lewis Hamilton Dedicates Canadian Grand Prix Victory to Ali as Mercedes Driver Wins Canadian Grand Prix

n the recently run Canadian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton began in pole position alongside his teammate and main-title rival Nico Rosberg. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, starting in third, roared into the lead, while the two teammates appeared to make contact. Vettel recorded faster lap times but could never erase the time he lost during his two fuel and maintenance stops to Hamilton, who took the race. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” Hamilton said aftertaking his victory lap. “That’s for Muhammad Ali.” Hamilton also performed the famous “Ali shuffle” atop his car for cheering fans. Williams’ Valtteri Bottas placed a surprising third ahead of Red Bull’s 18-year-old wunderkind Max Verstappen in fourth and Rosberg in fifth. n

How Do Americans Perceive Germans?

n April 2016, the German Information Center released the results of a study titled “Perceptions of Germany Among the U.S. Population.” The study, which was conducted by Magid Associates, found that 53 percent of Americans say they have an “excellent” opinion of Germany. Furthermore, 65 percent believe Germany is a modern and forward-thinking society, 64 percent say Germany is a major economic power and 61 percent say Germany plays an important role in the U.N. It’s also important to note that many respondents claimed a “neutral” opinion or responded with “I don’t know,” and only a fraction (4 percent) disagreed with those three statements. n

Germany’s Tom Kühnhackl Wins the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins

om Kühnhackl has become the third German to win the NHL’s Stanley Cup after the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks in the finals. “Unbelievable,” was the way the 24-year-old Kühnhackl described winning the cup after the Penguins 3-1 victory over the Sharks in game six of the finals contested in San Jose, California. “The adjustment at the beginning was really hard,” he told NHL.com, “but now I am standing here. I cannot believe it.” Kühnhackl moved to North America at age 18 and made his NHL debut in January. He went on to appear 42 times this season for the Penguins and played in all but one of his team’s 25 playoff matches. He is the third German to win the Stanley Cup, after Uwe Krupp with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996 and Dennis Seidenberg with the Boston Bruins in 2011. Kühnhackl comes from a storied hockey background. His father Erich is considered one of the best players to ever play the sport in Germany, and helped the national team to a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympics. “I think it is really important for Tom because he went through a very difficult period,” Erich told NHL.com. “He was injured a lot and fought through it and went on his way and never stopped.” n

German Basketball Team Failed to Qualify for 2016 Rio Olympics: Dirk Nowitzki Retires from German Team

allas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki stands by his decision, announced in February 2016 in an interview with German newspaper Bild, that he would not play for the German national basketball team anymore. “The last match at Euro 2015 was my last match for Germany,” he reiterated in a recent interview with Agence France Presse via Interaksyon.com. Nowitzki, 37, has been a fixture in international competition since 1997. In 2008, he helped push Germany to its first Olympic Games since 1992, eventually retiring (for the first time) in 2011 after Germany failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Nowitzki returned to the team for EuroBasket last year. In that tournament, he moved up to second on the all-time EuroBasket scoring list. Given the fact that Germany was not able to advance to an Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2016 Games, it’s no surprise Nowitzki has decided to walk away. He most likely wouldn’t have participated anyway – the scene as Germany was eliminated from EuroBasket screamed retirement – but being awarded a qualifier may have changed his mind. As it stands, Nowitzki has accomplished everything he can on the international level. German basketball is in a far better place now than in 1997, and Nowitzki’s ascent to all-time greatness played a huge role. n

n a special address from the White House, President Obama paid tribute to his “personal hero,” Muhammad Ali. The president honored Ali’s greatness as an athlete, an ambassador of peace and interfaith understanding, and a voice of social justice. He then shared some of his own Ali memorabilia, including one of TASCHEN’s collector’s edition volumes, “GOAT: Greatest of All Time”, personally gifted to the President by “The Champ” himself. Präsident Obama eröffnet Hannover Messe Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte der größten Industriemesse der Welt sind die USA das Partnerland. Und Präsident Obama lässt es sich nicht nehmen, eigens dafür nach Hannover zu reisen. Wie hat die Messe das geschafft?

s ist in der Tat ein Coup, den die Organisatoren der Hannover Messe da gelandet haben: Noch nie hat ein US-Präsident in Europa eine Messe eröffnet. Und die niedersächsische Landeshauptstadt Hannover hätte ohne die Messe wohl auch niemals auf dem Reiseplan des vermeintlich mächtigsten Mannes der Welt gestanden. Der Plan der Messemacher, allen voran Wolfram von Fritsch, Chef der Deutschen Messe AG, Barack Obama nach Hannover zu locken, war verwegen. Aber sein Plan ist aufgegangen. Mit dem Auftritt von Barack Obama rückte nicht nur Hannover für zwei Tage in den Mittelpunkt des Weltgeschehens, auch die größte Industriemesse dürfte von diesem Glanz sehr profitieren. Der Image-Gewinn ist jedenfalls enorm. Zumal mit Deutschland und den USA zwei der führenden Industrienationen der Welt auf dem Messegelände eindrucksvoll zeigen, wie sie sich die Welt der industriellen Produktion von morgen vorstellen. Die Sache mit dem Partnerland hat Tradition in Hannover, sowohl zur Computermesse Cebit als auch zur Hannover Messe, der großen Industrieschau. Vor fünf Jahren bereits habe man die Idee gehabt, erzählt Jochen Köckler vom Vorstand der Deutschen Messe AG und verantwortlich für die Hannover Messe im Gespräch mit der Deutsche Welle. Damals habe sich das Land, bedingt durch den Fracking-Boom in der Ölförderung begonnen, sich zu reindustrialisieren. Schließlich hatte es Präsident Obama sich auch zu einem Ziel seiner Amtszeit gemacht, den US-Anteil an der weltweiten Wertschöpfung wieder zu erhöhen. Damit rückten die USA wieder stärker in den Fokus der Messe, die sich als weltgrößte Veranstaltung für sogenannte Investitionsgüter - also

Barack Obama was first U.S. President to open Hanover Fair The world’s largest industrial technology trade fair hosted the United States as its partner country. And President Barack Obama even made a personal appearance in Hanover. So how did organizers make that happen?

he organizers of the Hannover Messe pulled off a real coup this year: Never before had a US president opened the world’s largest industrial technology fair. And it seems pretty likely that a visit to the capital of the German state of Lower Saxony would never have been on the agenda for a man often described as the world’s most powerful. More than a few people smiled wearily when Wolfram von Fritsch first suggested the idea. But the head of the international trade fair organizer Deutsche Messe is the person who is smiling now. His plan worked. The appearance of US President Barack Obama hasn’t just made Hanover a place of global media interest for a couple of days: It has also lent new prestige to the industrial technology fair. The increased attention has allowed the world’s two leading industrial nations, the United States and Germany, to show - and impressively so - what production will look like in the future. Having a partner country has long been the tradition at both the digital business fair CeBIT and the Hannover Messe. Jochen Köckler, a Deutsche Messe board member and the man responsible for the Hannover Messe, told Deutsche Welle that organizers had come up with the idea five years ago. At the time, the United States had begun to reindustrialize with big oil having found a big boom in fracking. Finally, Obama had made it a goal of his administration to increase the US share of the global production market. The trade fair is the world’s largest display of machines and devices for industrial production. Organizers opened an office in Washington, DC, and, project leader Marco Siebert began to pound the pavement.

Maschinen und Anlagen für die industrielle Produktion - sieht. Die Messe eröffnete ein Büro in Washington, und dort begann der Projektleiter Marco Siebert mit dem Klinkenputzen. Aber irgendwann kam die Sache in Bewegung. Vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr lud Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel Obama nach Hannover ein. Und kurz vor Weihnachten verkündete der Präsident seine Reisepläne via Twitter. Bei den Messemachern in Hannover dürften die Korken geknallt haben. Natürlich ist durch die enormen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen in diesem Frühjahr vieles auf der Hannover Messe anders als sonst. Messehallen, in denen sich der Präsident am Montag, 25. April, umschauen wird, sind schon seit Sonntag gesperrt. Aber die Aussteller zeigen überwiegend Verständnis, lockt das Ereignis doch wesentlich mehr Industrieprominenz als sonst auf die Messe. Ein wenig verstellt die ganze Aufregung um Obama allerdings den Blick auf das eigentliche Messethema: die sogenannte vernetzte Industrie (Integrated Industry) oder auch: Industrie 4.0. Mit Deutschland und den USA treffen zwei führende Anbieter solcher Technologien in Hannover aufeinander. Die Amerikaner ihrerseits gelten als Vorreiter der Informationstechnologie, die deutschen Maschinenbauer als Hochburg industrieller Fertigung und Automation. Immerhin haben beide Länder Anfang des Jahres gemeinsame Ziele vereinbart, was den Aufbau zuverlässiger Infrastrukturen und Systeme angeht. Mit 465 Firmen stellen die Amerikaner einen Großteil der ausländischen Aussteller auf der Hannover Messe. Das ist die größte Zahl von US-Unternehmen, die je an einer Messe außerhalb des eigenen Kontinents teilgenommen haben. Insgesamt verzeichnet die Messe mit über 5200 Ausstellern aus 75 Ländern ein deutlich gestiegenes Interesse. Ob das alleine am Obama-Faktor liegt, ist fraglich. Die Messemacher von Hannover freut es so oder so. n

At some point the project picked up steam. About a year ago, German Chancellor Angela Merkel invited Obama to Hanover. And, just before Christmas, the president announced his travel plans on Twitter. Trade fair organizers in Hanover must have been popping champagne. Naturally, the enormous security precautions that have been put in place mean that this year’s Hannover Messe is different from most. Trade fair halls that Obama is scheduled to visit on Monday, April 25, were already closed on Sunday. But exhibitors have generally been understanding. After all, Obama’s presence is raising the trade fair’s profile. However, that also means that attention has been refocused on the excitement over Obama’s visit and less attention is being paid to this year’s theme: “Integrated Industry” - or “Industry 4.0.” In Hanover, the world’s leading technology innovators and manufacturers are coming together. The United States is known for its pioneering information technology, and Germany for mechanical engineering, industrial manufacturing and automation. Of course, there is also competition between the countries - for example, over the standards that will apply in the future: Will German Industry 4.0 lead the way? Or will it be the industrial internet from the United States? Either way, earlier this year the two countries agreed on common objectives for building reliable infrastructure and systems. With 465 firms present, Americans make up a plurality of the foreign exhibitors at the Hannover Messe. In total, there are more than 5,200 exhibitors from 75 countries taking part in the trade fair - a significant rise in interest. It’s debatable whether that’s a result of the Obama factor. Copa America, “the oldest international continental football competition” (according to the organizers), will for the first time ever be held outside of its traditional South American home. Over the course of 32 matches, 16 teams will compete to truly become champion of the Americas. “It is awesome that the United States is hosting this historic tournament. The Copa America Centenario will raise awareness of soccer in the U.S. and make people pay more attention to soccer,” says Kat Swift, a leader of the Philadelphia-based Bundesliga Fan Coalition, one of the largest Bundesliga fan clubs in the United States that is not focused on a specific team. “It is the highest caliber tournament in the U.S. since the 1994 Men’s World Cup,” adds Alison Kasic, organizer of the Beltway

Der Einfluss des Turniers ist sowohl auf als auch außerhalb des Spielfelds spürbar.„Es ist sicherlich eine gute Herausforderung für das USTeam in einem Jahr ohne Weltmeisterschaft, besonders für die jungen Spieler,” so Kasic. „Und von einem organisatorischen Standpunkt gesehen, könnte diese Meisterschaft dazu beitragen, dass die USA eine bessere Chance haben, auch mal eine Fußballweltmeisterschaft auszurichten.”

Blues, an official Chelsea FC supporters group in Washington, D.C., and a member of the American Outlaws District of Columbia Chapter. Chile is the defending champion of the tournament first played in 1916. Uruguay is the all-time record holder with 15 champion-ships, followed by Argentina with 14 and Brazil with 8. “Look at the quality of teams in Copa—it is top heavy. While not having the depth of the Euros, it has world class teams and star power,” says Jeff Meyer. Meyer, typical of a new generation of American soccer fan, did not grow up playing or watching soccer, but became a fan of the “beautiful game” as an adult. “It is a pretty big deal . . . there are big-time countries and they are playing in the country’s best stadiums.” The impacts of the tournament can be felt both on and off the pitch. “It should be a good challenge for the U.S. team in a nonWorld Cup year, especially with several young players coming up,” says Kasic. “From a logistics standpoint, if the tournament goes well it should help position the United States for the next time U.S. Soccer bids to host a World Cup.” Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field is one of the ten stadiums, and the Berlin-born Swift plans to attend. “The U.S. team needs to make a good showing, it will be really good for soccer in this country.” The U.S. Men’s National Team is in a bracket with Columbia, Costa Rica and Paraguay, which opened play on June 2. And their chances? “I am cautiously optimistic,” states Kasic. “I’d be pleased with the quarterfinals.” Swift echoes her sentiments, mentioning that she “hopes that they make it to the quarterfinals, that would be great.” Meyer adds, “they should get past the group no problem. Hope they make it to the final four.” n

In the pressure cooker games against Costa Rica and Paraguay, the MNT rose to the occasion and got the results they needed. On June 16, 2016, the U.S. will face another sterious challenge against Ecuador.

Here are a few details about the U.S. Men’s National Team: The U.S. roster for Copa America Centenario is made up of three goalkeepers, eight forwards and 12 midfielders/forwards. There are 14 players from the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad, and a total of 19 who have already appeared in qualifying for

Russia 2018. The group includes Kyle Beckerman, Alejandro Bedoya, Matt Besler, Michael Bradley, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Clint Dempsey, Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Fabian Johnson, Jermaine Jones, Chris Wondolowski, DeAndre Yedlin, and Graham Zusi. Dempsey leads the team with 124 appearances and 49 goals, which ranks second in USA history. Meanwhile, 20-year-old goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is the only player on the roster without a senior team cap. Christian Pulisic is the youngest player on the roster at 17 years, while Tim Howard is the oldest player on the roster at 37 years. 12 players on the roster come from MLS, three from the English Premier League, two from Liga MX (Mexico), one apiece from the Scottish Premiership, Ligue 1 (France), and Tippeligaen (Norway) along with four from the German Bundesliga.

The German Connections of the U.S. MNT Roster at Copa America 2016 The Coach | Jürgen Klinsmann In 2011, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati named Jürgen Klinsmann as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, making him the 35th coach in the history of the program. Klinsmann has been involved in soccer almost his entire life as a player, coach, television analyst and consultant. As a player, Klinsmann was one of the game’s premier forwards and enjoyed a 17-year career that included stints in four major European leagues for a number of clubs, including VfB Stuttgart, Inter Milan, AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich. One of the most well-known international players of all-time, he earned 108 appearances for Germany and scored 47 goals while helping the team win the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and the 1996 European Championship. Klinsmann also has a famed coaching career and was named manager of the German National Team in 2004. He guided Germany to a third place finish in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, earning him Coach of the Year honors in Germany. Two years later, Klinsmann took over the head coaching position at Bayern Munich before accepting the position as coach of the U.S. MNT in 2011. Klinsmann considers the Copa America Centenario to be the second biggest stage in the world along with the European Championship. Before the tournament started, Klinsmann set the semifinals as the goal for his squad.

John Brooks | Defender John Brooks grew up in Berlin, joining his hometown club Hertha BSC and using his US citizenship to join the USMNT. Brooks made that choice as a youth international after representing both the USMNT and Germany at youth international level. With his club, Brooks progressed quickly through the youth and reserve teams, debuting for Hertha’s senior squad in 2012 and taking a starting job. He has moved up to the 1. Bundesliga with Hertha BSC for the 2013-2014 season.

Fabian Johnson | Midfielder Fabian Johnson is one of the discoveries of the Jürgen Klinsmann era in charge of the USMNT. Eligible to play for the United States as well as his native Germany, Johnson accepted a callup in 2011 and went through the process of changing his national registration to the USA. On the club side, Johnson has proven himself a crucual part of Hoffenheim’s lineup in Germany’s Bundesliga. Starting his career with 1860 Munich, Johnson has also played for Wolfsburg. He played at Under-19, U-20, and U-21 levels for Germany, and was part of their UEFA U-19 championship in 2009. Since the 2014/2015 season he has played professionally for the German club Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Jermaine Jones | Midfielder The son of a member of the US military and a German mother, Jermaine Jones spent his early years in the United States before returning to Germany with his mother. This allowed Jermaine to play for either the USMNT or Germany. He chose Germany, appearing for their youth teams. Since Jones was not capped at senior National Team level, a FIFA rule change allowed him to switch to the United States in 2009. At club level, Jones is an established talent in Germany’s Bundesliga, playing first for Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, back to Frankfurt, and ultimately signing with Schalke 04 for the 2007-08 season. Jones left Schalke during the 2014 January transfer window, signing with Besiktas in Turkey’s Super Lig. Jones saw out his contract with Besiktas, joining the New England Revolution in August, 2014. The day before the start of the 2016 MLS season, Jones signed with the Colorado Rapids.

Christian Pulisic | Midfielder It’s a rare thing for a 17-year-old to emerge as a member of the USMNT, but that’s exactly what Christian Pulisic did. He started by becoming a regular with Bundisliga power Borussia Dortmund,

quickly turning that into a call up with the United States. From there, Pulisic became the youngest player to score a goal in the modern era of US Soccer and a member of the 2016 Copa Centenario squad. He signed with Borussia Dortmund for the 2015-2016 season with the expectation that he would play in the academy. Instead, Pulisic debuted for the senior squad on Feb 21, 2016. Pulisic eventually made nine appearances and scored two goals. Borussia Dortmund finished in 2nd-place in the Bundesliga.

Bobby Wood | Forward Bobby Wood rose through the ranks of the USMNT program after moving to Germany as a teenager to play for 1860 Munich. Establishing himself in the 2.Bundesliga, the Hawaii native made 50 appearances for 1860 Munich before a 2015 move to Union Berlin. He debuted for the full USMNT on August 14, 2013 in an international friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Wood scored his first USMNT goal against the Netherlands at Amsterdam ArenA on June 5, 2015 and scored again against Germany on June 10. Die deutschen Spieler ließen den Ball laufen und schnürten den Gegner streckenweise am eigenen Sechzehnmeterraum ein. Als alle dachten, nun sei die Partie zu Ende, folgte doch noch ein Höhepunkt. Kurz nachdem die Dauer der Nachspielzeit angekündigt worden war, betrat Schweinsteiger für den schwachen Götze den Platz. Doch statt lediglich ein wenig den Ball laufen zu lassen, setzte der 31-Jährige zum Sprint an und bot sich bei einem letzten deutschen Konter über links in der Mitte an. Shkodran Mustafi’s first international goal handed the world champions the lead, before Bastian Schweinsteiger came off the bench to score on his 117th international appearance in stoppage time. Schweinsteiger, professionally playing for Manchester United. hasn’t played club football since March following a knee injury in his debut season in the English Premier League. But after sneaking into Joachim Löw’s early 27-man squad, the former Bayern stalwart proved he was physically ready for the European Championships. With Mats Hummels making progress in his recovery, and Antonio Rüdiger dropping out of the squad completely, the 24-year-old Mustafi was selected as Löw’s favored candidate to partner Jerome Boateng in central defense. Opponents Ukraine had some obvious threats, emanating from the talented wide duo of Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko. The opening goal arrived eight minutes later when Toni Kroos’ precise free kick was powerfully converted by Mustafi, who plays his club football with Valencia. The intricate interplay in attack disappeared after the break, but the Ukrainians appeared unable to take advantage. The German players were restricted to long-range shots with the central access to goal blocked and Bayern’s Mario Götze struggling to find space in the box. Löw had the luxury of a star-studded bench to pick from, with Leroy Sane, Mario Gomez, Julian Weigl and Joshua Kimmich waiting in the wings. But the German coach went for experience, switching Julian Draxler for Andre Schürrle, and later, Schweinsteiger for Götze. Finally, in stoppage time, Manchester United midfielder Schweinsteiger combined with Özil before finishing off with a first-time finish at the far post. It was the midfielder’s first international goal in five years, although more importantly, it was the Germany captain returning to international action, giving Löw further options going forward. The German team is set to face what is widely regarded as their toughest opponent in Group C of Euro 2016 in France. A victory over Poland would see “Die Mannschaft” take a big step towards the knockout stage. n

Die 11. Amgen Tour von Kalifornien ist gerade am 22. Mai zu Ende gegangen. Es ist Amerikas größtes Radrennen und überraschenderweise stammt der populärste Vertreter des Rennens aus Berlin. Und woher kommt es, dass deutsche Radweltmeister in diesem Jahr mehr Tage in Kalifornien Rennen gefahren sind als auf den Straßen Deutschlands?

The 11th annual Amgen Tour of California, which is America’s biggest cycling race, wrapped up on May 22 and – most surprisingly – its most popular Race Ambassador is from Berlin. Why, you might ask, have Germany’s world-champion cyclists spent more days in 2016 racing in California, rather than on roads in Germany?

Es sind eher die vielen Sonnentage, die die deutschen Top-Radrennerfahrer in den goldenen Westküstenstaat locken. In einem lustigen Werbespot schaut Voigt aus dem Fenster seiner Berliner Wohnung und sieht ein kaltes und nasses Berlin. Dann hat er plötzliche die gute Idee, Kalifornien, bekannt für seine mehr als 300 Sonnentage pro Jahr, zu besuchen. Und tatsächlich kam Voigt drei Wochen vor der Amgen Tour dieses Jahr nach Kalifornien und führte ein 86-Meilen-Rennen mit seinen Fans an. Und seid Jahrzehnten ist vielen Profi-Radrennteams absolut bewusst, was für ein besonderes Vergnügen es ist, den Pacific Coast Highway per Rad zu befahren. Dieses Jahr rasten die Teilnehmerinnen der UCI World Tour der Frauen tagelang durch Weinberge, Wüstenlandschaften und Berge. Und die Männer-Division der Amgen Tour legte knapp 800 Meilen in acht Staffeln (Tagen) zurück und erklomm dabei sogar Strecken, die mehr als 2.000 Meter oberhalb des Lake Tahoe liegen. Leider konnte die Gewinnerin des Amgen Rennen von 2015, Trixi Worrack aus Deutschland, ihren Titel nicht verteidigen, da sie sich kürzlich verletzte. Bei den Männern fuhr der deutsche Meister von 2011, Robert Wagner vom Team LottoNL-Jumbo, ein sehr gutes Rennen und John Degenkolb, der deutsche Gewinner der beiden größten Eintagsrennen (Paris-Roubaix und Mailand–San Remo) im letzten Jahr, hatte sich von einer lebensgefählichen Verletztung erholt und nahm wieder am Amgen Rennen teil. Er gelangte unter die ersten acht in den letzten beiden Rennetappen. Kalifornien ist schon lange ein Reiseziel gewesen, wohin die TopRadrennfahrer vor dem kalten und nassen Europa flüchteten. Bereits vor 20 Jahren kam zum Beispiel das Rennteam von T-Mobile und verbrachte einige Wochen im Winter hier. Die Sonne und die herrlichen Landschaften haben Deutsche immer wieder auf diese Seite der Welt gelockt, um per Rad eine lange Tour zu genießen. n

t is not because of Disneyland, although Berlin’s now-retired cycling star and the event’s Race Ambassador Jens Voigt might like to bring his wife and six kids to Anaheim for the rides; more likely, those top German cyclists love coming to California because of the Golden State’s perennial sunshine. A funny German commercial shows Voigt looking out his windows at home in cold and wet Berlin, until he gets the bright idea about visiting California, with its 300-plus warm, sunny days a year. And visit he did, as Voigt led an 106-mile fan ride this year on the Queen Stage of the massive Amgen Tour three weeks before the actual race. Several of the world’s top pro teams, in both the men’s and women’s divisions, have known for decades that there’s a lot to be said for cycling along the Pacific Coast Highway. This year competitors on the UCI Women’s WorldTour raced for days through vineyards, deserts, and in the mountains. The men’s Amgen ToC covered almost 800 miles in eight stages/days traveling as high as 7,000 feet above Lake Tahoe. Unfortunately, the women’s 2015 Amgen champion, Germany’s Trixi Worrack, was recently injured and so could not defend her title in 2016. On the men’s side, the 2011 German National Champion Robert Wagner (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) rode well and John Degenkolb, the German winner of two of last year’s greatest one-day races, the 2015 Paris-Roubaix and Milan San Remo, returned to the Amgen men’s race after a life-threatening injury. He finished in the top eight of the last two stages of the competition. California has long been a place where Germany’s top cyclists come to escape the cold and wet of Europe. After his first Tour de France win, Jan Ullrich and the Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile racing team spent winter weeks here.” It seems the lure of the sun and the gorgeous landscapes of California are undeniably the reasons Germans love coming to the other side of the world to strap on their helmets and get into the saddle to enjoy a long bike ride (or race) in the Golden State. n SUMMER 2016 www.german-world.com 31

For its 44th presentation, the grand finals concert of the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition for young opera singers showcased ten outstanding talents. The ethnic diversity among the singers also proves that singing opera is growing worldwide.

Nedra Zachary, president and co-founder of the Zachary Society, was very pleased to announce that a total of $57,000 in prize money was to be distributed among all the singers, with all participants given an equal amount and then additional prizes awarded for each singer awarded a top honor by the distinguished judges. For award placement, the judges considered the vocal quality, stage presence and audience engagement of each singer. An audience of 1270 opera enthusiasts cheered for their favorites and in several cases those cheers include “Encore, encore!” Contestant Vanessa Vasquez demonstrated vocal and dramatic versatility by performing “Un bel di, vedremo” from Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” and ”È strano...Ah, fors’é lui…Sempre libera” from Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Galeano Salas’s rendition of “Che gelida Manina” from Puccini’s “La Boheme” displayed maturity of voice and confidence when beautifully delivering an aria sung so famously by others. The works performed ranged from compositions from Amadeus Mozart to Ambroise Thomas. Within the audience were André Courville, the competition’s 2015 first-prize award bass-baritone; Dr. Carlos Gamboa, Vice Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Angola; and movie/TV personality Barbara Rush. n a ceremony at the State Capitol of Oklahoma, German Consul General Ricarda Redeker officially bid farewell on April 11, 2016, to the Honorary Consul in Oklahoma City, Mr. Charles Wiggin. He has been the Honorary Consul for nearly 21 years and is now retiring. At the ceremony, Redeker thanked Wiggin for his dedicated work and service and presented him with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his longtime commitment to Germany. The Secretary of State of Oklahoma Chris Benge also attended the ceremony.

On that day, Redeker appointed Wiggin’s successor, Jeremy Tubb, as the new German Honorary Consul in Oklahoma City. Mr. Tubb is a trial lawyer and litigator who has strong ties to the community in Oklahoma and is also fluent in German. n n Consul General Neumann Visits Las Vegas,

Midwest KEEPING UP A LONG TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE –– By Jenny Peters ––

For more than 50 years, brothers Harry and Guenter Kempf have kept German traditions alive and well at their popular Chicago Brauhaus in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago. What began in 1965 as the Treffpunkt Restaurant and has since evolved into the Chicago Brauhaus has always been a convivial place, since the brothers – both immigrants from Germany – are not only restaurateurs, but musicians as well. Two Kempf generations: Guenter, Harry, and Alfred at the annual Maifest (f.l.t.r.)

arry’s journey to America began in 1956 when he was only 19 years old. Coming from a musical family, he bought a bass fiddle upon his arrival in Chicago and used his talents by working as a singer at the restaurant Zum Deutschen Eck. Later he formed a trio and eventually even a 10-piece band called The Continental Ensemble. In 1963, Harry opened Zum Lieben Augustin next to the German theater on Lincoln Avenue. Upon Harry’s invitation to visit him for one year in America, Guenter Kempf left a prosperous job in an appliance manufacturing company in Stuttgart with the promise by his boss to get his job back after one year. However, instead of going back to Germany, Guenter opened Treffpunkt with Harry on Lincoln Avenue in 1965, together entertaining their guests with music: Harry on his bass and Guenter on the drums. Lincoln Avenue was an unfinished street at that time consisting of Treffpunkt, Meyer’s Deli (now Gene’s Delikatessen) and various storefronts. The Chicago Chamber of Commerce intended to create an ethnic center in that area but without any businesses, it was long shot. In order to attract more people, Harry and Guenter decided to run an Oktoberfest. This event, now named German Day Fest, still spills out onto Lincoln Avenue for three fun-filled days in September and is a highly anticipated Chicago party every year. For the first 20 years, things went well for the Kempf brothers until a fire started in Witzel’s Shoe Store in 1985, right next to Treffpunkt, which lay soon in ruins. Luck would have it that the Kempf brothers had purchased a furniture store across from Treffpunkt a year before in order to turn it into a big banquet facility. Within less than three days, Chicago Brauhaus, modeled on Munich’s Hofbräuhaus, opened across the street from the previous Treffpunkt location, and it has been there ever since. Visitors have always been greeted by music, originally played by both the Kempf brothers and nowadays by the famed Brauhaus Trio, still led by Guenter while Harry devotes himself to the kitchen as the restaurant’s longtime chef. The Kempf brothers also hold an annual Maifest featuring special bands and entertainers from Germany and other European destinations. Luckily, the family tradition is continuing with Alfred (Freddie) Kempf, Harry’s son, helping to keep things running smoothly. There are plenty of different kinds of ales and lagers straight from Germany on the menu, along with wines and cocktails, all designed to pair perfectly with the classic German fare the Kempfs serve up. ans of white asparagus from Europe were treated to this delicacy at its best for a few weeks at Swiss Chef in Valley Glen and Jägerhaus in Anaheim. Röckenwagner in Santa Monica offered it for two days only. The GermanAmerican Chamber of Commerce in San Francis-co even had it flown in by Lufthansa from Germany for their annual White Aspargus Dinner, prepared by master chef Thomas Rimpel (photo). I had the chance to enjoy weißen Spargel at Swiss Chef and Jägerhaus. Chef Ueli at Swiss Chef offered the white gold from Alsace, which had an exquisite taste. The Black Forest Ham and Sauce Hollandaise that I ordered along with it were very flavorful and complemented the delicate vegetable very well. At Jägerhaus I opted for white asparagus with melted Swiss cheese, sautéed onions and red potatoes, which was a heartier, delicious option and offered for an amazingly low $15.95. My only complaint: Spargelfest ended too soon! It should continue until June 24, St. John’s Day (St. Johannis), just like in Europe. Jägermeister Shifts Gears Inside a Secret Speakeasy By Jenny Peters

veryone in America knows that Jägermeister, the famed German digestif made with 56 herbs and spice, is famous for being served as a shot, to be quickly tossed down your throat. In fact, Jäger is by far the most popular shot (1.5 ounces of liquor, served neat) poured in the U.S.A., ever since its original surge in popularity here in the 1980s.

But these days, the brand that was introduced in 1935 by Wilhelm Mast in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany, is out to change perceptions, which is why Jägermeister held a secret speakeasy event recently in Los Angeles. Guests were chauffeured to a secret spot in Burbank, where the massive “Wulferis & Buttle” rolling speakeasy awaited. Located in an 18-wheeler semi-trailer, this homage to all things Jäger transports visitors into a long-past world, a mash-up of an old hunting lodge and a Prohibition-style secret bar. There, Jägermeister ambassadors and

mixologists offered up samples of the way the liqueur works as a base for cocktails, including an Old Fashioned Pastor (Jäger, tequila, bitters and more) and a Jägermeister Flow (Jäger, Mescal, Rum, pineapple juice). “It’s so much more than just the shot,” said Willy Shine, the brand’s resident mixologist and the night’s host. “Jägermeister is a great base for creating many innovative cocktails – we’re simply getting the word out!” The “Wulferis & Buttle” speakeasy is rolling across America this summer, making select stops along the way, spreading the news that Jägermeister isn’t just for shooting any more. The German-American Steuben Parade Committee and its Chairman Robert Radske recently announced the two Grand Marshals who will lead the 59th Annual Steuben Parade on September 17 in New York: Ice skater Katarina Witt and Germany’s Ambassador to the U.S. Peter Wittig. Excellent choices, since both nominees enjoy a stellar reputation in their respective fields.

She won her first gold medal in Ladies Figure Skating during the 1984 Olympic Games of Sarajevo, and her se-cond gold in 1988 in Calgary. Witt founded WITH WITT Sports & Entertainment GmbH in 1995 – an agency that has set new standards for figure-skating productions. In 2005, she established the Katarina Witt Foundation, to help children with special needs regain mobility and a positive attitude towards life. ¦

Peter Wittig joined the German Foreign Service in 1982. He has served as the German Ambassador to the U.S. since April 2014. He was German Ambassador to the UN in New York and represented Germany during its tenure as a member of the UN Security Council in 2011 and 2012. Rebecca Koehler Crowned as Miss German-America 2016 On May 15, at a pageant ceremony at Liederkranz, in the heart of Yorkville on New York’s Upper East Side, Rebecca Joy Koehler, a resident of North Bergen, New Jersey, was crowned as the new Miss German-America for 2016! Ms. Koehler is a student of interior design and realestate photography. She will preside over the Steuben Parade’s Queen’s Float, along with her two princesses, Michaela Stuart of Greeley, Penn., and Oona Yasukevich of Brooklyn, New York. All three speak German – one of the requirements for these highly honored positions. Miss German-America will receive a $5,000 scholarship at the end of her term, while each of the two princesses will receive a scholarship of $2,500. The queen and princesses are also joined by the Junior General von Steuben, Franz O’Purk, and the junior princesses Frieda O’Purk, Kaete Weinseiss and Katherina Stropnicky. ¦

Germans and Americans alike came decked out in dirndls and lederhosen to enjoy a night of good food, live music and, of course, lots of “Prosits der Gemütlichkeit!”

BB & the Polkahaus (Alexa Poller and Julian) entertained the crowd with music and also hosted a few well-spirited competitions inclu-ding “Best Dirndl Dress” and “Strongest Lederhosen Calves.” The evening ended with everyone dancing the night away. The star of the evening was – naturally – the delicious Paulaner beer brewed in the restaurant’s own on-premises microbrewery, according to the original recipes. The film of the phenomenally successful Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music” was shot on lots of real locations around Salzburg, Austria. And while plenty more were recreated on soundstages at the 20th-Century Fox studios in Hollywood, taking a trip to the Salzburg region will have your whole family singing along with the Von Trapp family.

he opening aerial shots of the movie are in Salzburg’s glorious Lake District, the Salzkammergut, and in neighboring Bavaria. The castles you can see are Kloster Höglwörth, an old monastery on a peninsula of Höglwörther See in Upper Bavaria; and Schloss Anif, located off highway E55, a few miles south of Salzburg.

The mountain atop which Maria (star Julie Andrews) makes her first twirling appearance is Mehlweg, near the Bavarian village of Marktschellenberg, about six miles from Salzburg. Convent interiors of Maria’s abbey were recreated in the studio, but the exterior really is Nonnberg Abbey (large photo). There you can visit the courtyard and peek inside the chapel – which looks nothing like the interior recreated back in Hollywood. The film cheats a little with the exterior, too. As you’ll find if you visit, the real Nonnberg Abbey doesn’t look out over the picturesque old town of Salzburg, but instead to the nondescript southern suburbs. The reverse shot, of Maria leaving the abbey, was filmed way across the city on the Humboldt Terrace in front of the Museum of Modern Art. As Maria leaves to take up her post with the Von Trapp family, she sings “I Have Confidence in Me,” which was filmed in Salzburg’s Residenzplatz; that also served as the location for the “Anschluss” scene in the movie. The “Villa Von Trapp” is a combination of two different Salzburg locations. The tree-shaded lane, where Maria alights from the bus, is Hellbrunner Allee, running south from the old town. Here you’ll recognize Schloss Frohnburg, a 17th-century country house, now the Mozarteum Music Academy, which was used for the intimidating gates and front entrance of the villa that Maria nervously approaches. The lakeside terrace, however, was filmed at Schloss Leopoldskron, a Rococo cas-

tle on Leopoldskroner Teich, a small artificial lake on the southwest of the town, now a seminar and conference center. By the way, the real Villa Trapp is located in Aigen, a suburb just to the southeast of the Old Town of Salzburg. Since 2008, it’s been open as the Hotel Villa Trapp. The little footbridge over which the von Trapps skip at the beginning of the “My Favorite Things” montage of Salzburg is Mozartsteg, north of Mozartplatz. They finally head off for a picnic in the meadow above the village of Werfen, 25 miles south of Salzburg in the Salzach River valley. Maria’s wedding, which actually took place in Nonnberg Abbey, was filmed in the baroque, twin-towered St. Michael’s Church in Mondsee, about 15 miles east of Salzburg on highway E55/E60. The mountain over which the family finally escapes to freedom is above the village of Obersalzberg, near the village of Rossfeld, 12 miles south of Salzburg. In reality, as Johannes von Trapp, now 77, explained at a press conference in October 2015 celebrating 50 years of the “The Sound of Music” movie, his family didn’t really climb over the hills and trek across the border, but took a train. And he confirmed that Maria and his father did not marry at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in nearby Mondsee, either. S

Among the many attractions along the Hellbrunner Allee in Salzburg, the Frohnburg Castle is a widely neglected one although thousands of tourists worship it because of the movie “The Sound of Music,” in which it was used for the exterior shots of the Villa Von Trapp. Originally, Schloss Frohnburg was built between 1660 and 1680 by Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf as a summer manor and was called “Schloss Grafenau.” Through marriage, the castle went to the family of the Counts of Frohnberg who gave the new name of Schloss Frohnburg to the building. Later it became the property of the Counts of Kuenberg. Schloss Frohnburg went through its prime around 1700, when 13 gardeners maintained its extensive parks and gardens. In 1957, the Count of Kuenberg sold Frohnburg Castle to the Republic of Austria, which now uses it as a dormitory for students of the music conservatory Mozarteum as well as a concert venue and rehearsal site.

Follow the new “The Sound of Music” trail in Werfen and discover Fortress Hohenwerfen

This is a fairly new offering in Salzburg, as the trail only opened to the public in late October 2015. It is the stunning shooting location where the picnic scene was filmed, with Julie Andrews teaching the children to sing. This area on the outskirts of Werfen is known as the Gschwandtanger. “The Sound of Music” Trail is 1.4 kilometers long, with 12 information stations along the way, many of which are interactive. Don’t miss the impressive fortress Hohenwerfen, which overlooks the village of Werfen. It is the second-biggest fortress of Salzburg and constructed in the style of a medieval castle. The Festung Hohenwerfen is also famous for its bird-of-prey shows. The European hotel in “Just Married” with Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy was also filmed at the Werfen castle. Another big attraction is the Salzburg Ice Caves (Eisriesenwelt), the biggest ice caves in Europe that are open to visitors.

Enjoy Mondsee

The town of Mondsee extends along the northern tip of a crescent-shaped lake, noted for its warm water. It is one of the prettiest towns in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut – and one of the most tourist-filled ones. Like most towns in the Salzkammergut, it has a scenic lakeside promenade and a picturesque market square. Historically, Mondsee is ancient: Neolithic finds were made here and are on display. The monastery was founded in 748 and should not be missed.

n Furth’s Dragon-Slaying Pageant: See Germany’s Oldest Folk Play

n Furth, the Bavarian Forest near the German-Czech border, a fearsome dragon menaces that small town. But fortunately, year after year, the valiant locals confront and eventually manage to slay it. Furth’s dragon-slaying festival, a spectacle that attracts tens of thousands of visitors, traditionally begins in the second week in August and is scheduled from August 8 to August 21 this year. The pageant’s origins date back to 1590, when killing the dragon was part of the Corpus Christi procession. Later it became a separate event and was given a regular date in the summer. Over time the pageant has been sensitively modernized and updated.

The dragon slaying is enacted ten times or so during the festival, a feat involving some 1,400 participants, 250 horses and all manner of props from wagons to cannons. But there’s no doubt that the real star is the new dragon that has dominated the stage since 2010. It really is a monster, the biggest walking robot in the world, weighing eleven tons, standing 4.5 meters tall and measuring over 15 meters in length. Its top speed is 1.5 kilometers an hour; it roars, breathes fire and smoke and has a 16-meter wingspan. There’s also an exciting program of pageant activities: shooting, a medieval market, bird of prey displays, a grand historical procession and a traditional Germanvolksfest with a beer garden and fun fair. n

n The Queen of German Wine In honor of the 200th anniversary of Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine-growing region, this year’s election of the German wine queen will take place in the charming city of Mainz on September 30. The representative of the German wine industry, the wine queen is elected for one year, chosen from the different wine queens from Germany’s thirteen wine regions. n American Brewery to Open Doors in Berlin

merican craft brewing company Stone is taking a chance on the German market with the first American craft-beer brewpub, slated to open this summer in Berlin. The California-based company will be the first American brewery to brew and operate in Europe. Craft beers were slow to take hold in Germany, where many still hold fast to the 500-year-old Bavarian Purity Law. However, craft beer has seen a spike in popularity in recent years. In fact, German breweries are transitioning to small-batch, specialized products in response to demand. The German Brewery Association notes that of the 1388 registered breweries in Germany, nearly 50 percent call themselves “microbreweries” – a name that is synonymous with craft beer in the U.S. “We are living through a renaissance of beer and brewing,” said DBB head Holder Eichele. “The German brewery landscape is becoming ever more diverse. Every week, new high-quality beers hit the market. Consumers have never before had such a variety.” And now there’s American beer added into that mix! n

The jury selected a colorful cross section of contemporary German films, including successes from the Toronto and Berlin festivals, as well as other works from well-known directors and promising newcomers. Five of the selected movies were U.S. premieres, including the opening-night movie “The Weather Inside,” a thoughtprovoking drama by Isabelle Stever starring German actress Maria Furtwaengler.

Known to most Germans in the audience as the cool and poised Detective Charlotte Lindholm in the series “Tatort”, the popular actress portrays Dorothea Nagel, a public relations adviser for an international aids organization working in an unspecified, war-torn Arab country in order to organize an aid campaign. While there, she discovers that the luxury of her decadent lifestyle, designer clothes and cocktails, stands in stark and cynical contrast to the needs of the poor. Seized by the spirit of adventure, she tumbles head-on into an affair with the 24-year-younger Alec, who appears to be nothing more than a handsome Arab drifter. Two bodies and two worlds collide. Her new muse and the uncontrollable events of war turn her previously biased view of reality on its head. Who is actually helping Maria Furtwaengler with her mother, actress whom? Driven by her passion and indulKathrin Ackermann ging excessively in alcohol, drugs, and sex, Dorothea slowly begins to lose control. n May 18, 2016, Deutsche Welle and MHz Networks announced the extension of their partnership at a reception in Washington, D.C.; in attendance were guests from politics, business and the media. DW is now available in approximately 400,000 households in the U.S. capital on channel MHz 11. “The investment and focus on our English TV channel continues to pay off and this agreement with MHz Networks is an important step,” said DW Director- General Peter Limbourg in his welcome address. Headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, MHz Networks has been broadcasting a threehour block of DW from 15:00 to 18:00 (EST) on its channel MHz Worldview since October 2015. MHz Worldview is picked up by DirectTV, more than 31 PBS stations and many other cable networks.
