Brief History of Development • Angkor Empire between the 10th and 13th centuries • became part of French Indochina in 1887 • Following Japanese occupation in World War II, Cambodia gained full independence from France in 1953. • In April 1975, Communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh and evacuated all cities and towns. At least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, forced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime under POL POT. • December 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside, began a 10-year Vietnamese occupation • UN-sponsored elections in 1993. the king was restored, making Cambodia the world's only post-communist country which restored monarchy as the system of government.

Pre-school Education in Cambodia UNICEF helps local government build preschools in Cambodia A safe learning environment UNICEF’s child rights programme in Cambodia, known as ‘Seth Koma’ in the Khmer language, is working with rural communities to build pre-schools that provide children with a safe learning environment, including access to clean water and latrines. In the past year, UNICEF has assisted about 900 preschools in six rural provinces, helping to bring early education to some 20,000 children.


Pre-school Education in Cambodia UNICEF helps local government build preschools in Cambodia Preparation for formal schooling “Currently the Cambodian Government doesn’t have the necessary funds to provide early childhood education to all Cambodian children, especially in the rural areas,” says UNICEF’s Seth Koma Programme Officer, Tessa Rintala. There are problems with children enrolling in school at a later age, dropping out or repeating classes. “UNICEF believes that community pre-school education actually better prepares children for formal schooling and aids them to be more socialized and adjusted for school life,” notes Ms. Rintala.
