Back to the future with Sanderson’s new 50s collection

Sanderson is a well known fabric and wallpaper company that has been designing and producing fabrics and wallpapers for over 150 years. Well known for their excellent quality and their classic designs, Sanderson have looked to the past, in keeping with the current trend for retro and vintage furniture, and reinvented many of their 1950s designs in their latest collection.

60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain 1951

Even though Ireland was well and truly independent in 1951, we would also have been influenced by the Festival of Britain in 1951 which revived an optimism amongst the designers as new commissions came in. The public were bored with rations and wartime dreariness and was starting to demand variety and bold vibrant colours. With the increase in new homes and the start of interiors magazines, DIY was forged as a new hobby as people tackled their homes with gusto. Vivid pillar-box red, kingfisher blues and acid greens became popular colours. New advances in science such as atomic power and the discovery of the structure of DNA were reflected in architectural structures at the time as well as in wallpaper and fabric designs.

Why is the 1950s era so popular now? Part of the attraction is harking back to a bygone era when life was simpler and people were used to ‘mending and making do’. The 1950s was also a time for strong colours, timeless design, uncluttered stylish furniture that was somewhat futuristic and attractive with its clean lines. Fabrics, wallpapers and artwork had bold patterns with strong colours. Many of these 1950s designs have now been revitalized for contemporary living as we yearn for brightness in our homes safe from all the exterior doom and gloom. Together with the 60th anniversary for the Festival of Britain, it seems that the 1950s is back to stay for a while.

Fifi was an original wallpaper design from Sanderson in the 1950s. It was actually discovered recently in a loft where it had been hidden away for the last 50 years. I think it is perfect for a girl’s bedroom, a dressing room, walk in wardrobe or bathroom. It features the hourglass figure of
