Designer Picks WHITBY WALLPAPERS BY MINI MODERNS

At the heart of fine design lies a passion for beautiful products and experiences. We asked some of our leading interior designers and retailers to select the items that make them swoon.

“The Mini Moderns designs are fun and funky and often inspired by a retro or historical influence,” says Lorna Sixsmith from Garrendenny Lane Interiors. “What I like about their designs is the appeal to both children and adults. Some of their wallpaper designs, such as Tick Tock and C60 Cassettes, can even be coloured in by children, making them truly individual. Their Whitby wallpapers have a nautical theme, featuring the majesty and wonder of the open sea but also that of a working seaside village with the fishing boats and busy seagulls. This design is perfect for a boy's bedroom and wouldn't be outgrown for many years. It would also look great in a home office, a dining room (in the red) or a bathroom. The Whitby wallpapers come in four colourways, are of fabulous quality and are a great price at €54 per roll.” Available in Lido blue, washed denim, red and stone from www.garrendennylane.com

HANDMADE CERAMIC LIGHTS “We’ve chosen this amazing range of traditional handmade cracked glazed ceramic interiors lights fittings from Broisseron in France,” says Michelle Crichton at Boulevard Interiors. “These unique fittings combine rich colours and appealing designs to create pieces that will do much more than just light up a room. Each piece is slightly different due to the handmade craftsmanship, which is more a work of art than a piece of furniture. These wall light, table lamps and chandeliers are the perfect finishing touch for any room with prices from €160.” Every design is available in an extensive selection of 24 different colours that you can view at Boulevard Interiors, Unit 3, Oakleigh, Donnybrook Hill, Donnybrook, Douglas, Cork, T: 021 4898268

ZOFFANY FABRICS “This interior is a good example of how old and new work well together,” says Justina Gruzdyte, interior designer at The Fabulous Fabric Company. “Zoffany collections always make reference to the past while using contemporary techniques and treatments to take the company forward as a purveyor of timeless and distinctive furnishings. The Frangipani collection in particular encompasses both traditional and contemporary interpretations of natural forms. I like this combination of contemporary lime green, turquoise and bright orange on the embroidered upholstery fabric Kashida which is a stunning reproduction of a 19th century antique Kashmir wall hanging. Every repeat of the design is slightly different from the last as the craftsmen follow the stencilled outlines of the motifs freehand. That alone is an example of design excellence!” Curtains: Zoffany Harvest blue/orange €176 per metre. Chair: Zoffany Kashida Multi €254 per metre. The Fabulous Fabric Company, Ballymakeera, Co. THE MONTY SOFA “Caseys Furniture is proud to be celebrating 90 years as a quality furniture merchant,” says Peter Casey. Since 1921, we have offered customers both classic, timeless pieces and that individual signature piece that becomes the cornerstone of your interior. With this in mind, I’ve picked a favourite piece that I feel captures both old-world sentiment and contemporary edge. The Monty sofa is a modern classic. It is elegant in shape, superbly crafted and upholstered. Reminiscent of the original Chesterfield button-back design, its retro charm is obvious while its lime and charcoal-grey palette offers a pop of contemporary colour and personality. It makes a bold yet elegant statement. Available in a range of interesting colours, the Monty sofa is cosy and comfortable. Be sure to call in and see my favourite piece instore with us at Caseys.” Caseys Cork and Limerick, www.caseys.ie.

HANDPAINTED WOOD AND SILK “Both the Secret Garden painting and the handpainted silk and damask design have a common thread – a mass of shape and movement and layering of texture,” says artist Sue Gifford. “The painting of the door is layer upon layer of different leaf shapes and different greens and tones of yellow as you would find in a cottage garden. The textiles I enjoy in the same way. In the silk there is both smooth and soft, and irregular weave, then it is tinted, and the background design reminiscent of falling leaves is painted over and over as it is blown across the fabric with the finch flying above. I like the repetition of 'things' even though not necessarily the same - for instance the mass of flower heads on the common thyme.” Sue Gifford, Loughruane, Castletownroche, Mallow, Co. THE HENLEY DINING TABLE “I love this table because it’s a true example of successful collaboration between old craftsmanship and new technology,” says Orla Holland at Interio. “I think it really stands out from mainstream tables on the market. It’s both beautiful and practical. I love the washed oak finish, which can sit perfectly in a traditional dining room with big silk curtains or in a more modern dining area or loft apartment. The single pedestal allows flexibility for more seating without the discomfort of being squashed up against a table leg and the circular design is very practical for dining. The Henley wood finish is based on a cellulose lacquer developed exclusively by the manufacturer, which enhances the look of the oak timber. What’s not to love?” Henley solid oak 8-seater 150cm diameter circular table €1495 (also available in 120cm). Interio, Quin Road Business Park, Ennis, Co Clare, T: 065 6843626, www.interio.ie

DEEP BUTTONED MIRROR “This luxurious deep buttoned mirror, finished in metallic navy leatherette, was designed for an exhibit showcasing Conbu Interior Design’s business,” says Angela Connolly. “I love the deep buttoning as it gives the mirror a plush and luxurious feel. The unusual navy metallic leatherette looks like denim. This piece is extremely versatile as it can be made in different sizes with many colour and finish options. Using different colours or finishes changes the entire look of the piece allowing it to fit into any interiors setting – modern or traditional.” Mirror in metallic navy leatherette 90x60cm €429. LENTI PENDANT LIGHT “This beautiful, modern light is very much admired in our showroom and often described as ‘space age’ by our customers,” says David Cahill, who owns Spa Lighting in Killarney and online lighting shop Lighting & Living. He has just opened a Lighting & Living showroom with furniture retailer Design Classics at the Sofa Factory premises in Dublin 8. “The Lenti looks great over a dining table or breakfast bar and we have specified it to a restaurant as it really does provide wow factor. The reflective material adds an interesting dimension to a room. Designer Eskild Hansen was inspired by a sculpture he saw in Chicago as well as some interesting cloud formation.” Made from chrome and glass this spherical pendant light is hung from two steel wires and a black electric cable. €330. THE PALLONE CHAIR “The Pallone Chair, designed by Boonzaaijer, Mazairac & de Scheemaker for Leolux in 1989 is a Leolux classic,” says Aoife Hayes at Objekt Design Space. “Originally designed for the ‘House of The Future’, it is impossible to put an age on it. Initially displayed in two colours for the striking balloon and backrest, its unprecedented success was demonstrated with its relaunch in 2009 for Leolux’s 75th anniversary. The new limited editions in 11 trendy tri colours became personalities ensuring this futuristic armchair can effortlessly find space in the interiors of today. Timeless yet trendy, an ethos carried through all furnishings at Objekt.” The Pallone chair combining humour and design, from €1649 at Objekt, Millfalls, Southquay, Newcastlewest, County Limerick, T: 069 78223, www.objekt.ie

TREE SHELVING SYSTEM “The tree shelving system is a modular design that satisfies Horizon Furniture's belief in cool, calm, functional and beautifully crafted furniture for use in the home,” says Fergal O’Leary. “The shelving can be made in any width with extra spines. It can go around corners with different shelf spacings and in different timbers and shelf finishes. The treeshelves are flatpackable, easily assembled and fixed to the wall at only one point at the top with a foot at the bottom which is adjusted to stabilise the shelves. The shelves are gloss lacquered solid poplar but can be made in any hardwood to match the hand shaped solid oak spine. What works best for me is the contrast of the high finish of the painted shelves against the handcrafted curved spine, creating a design that is very modern but which maintains a tactile warmth.” From €1350 for 2m high 1m wide system with lacquered shelves. Other options on request. Horizon Furniture, T: 021 4313313, M: 087 6362088, E: fergal.horizon@gmail.com

THE MYLESTONE THRONE “This piece showcases our appreciation of line and form with a whimsical approach,” says Diahann Carmody of Mylestone Interiors. “The cushions and colours specs are tailored to the clients’ needs; we marry function and form with elegance and beauty. We had a vision of bringing Mylestone’s handmade bespoke pieces to the public in a manner that would inspire and delight anyone with an eye for design. LE CORBUSIER STYLE RECLINER “I love this classic sling chair design based on the work of one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, Le Corbusier, renowned for his provocative ideas and revolutionary designs,” says Anita Oakey, proprietor of Aoki Interiors. “The sloping design of this chaise longue is certainly meant for you to relax in luxury. It gives the illusion that you are floating above the frame. The simple design and the chrome trim will make this an essential part of your modern room. The frame is in stainless steel and the cushions covered with faux leather available in black or white. The reversible frame turns it from a relaxing chair into a rocking chair.” 1.08m x 0.64m x 1.69m. €350 at Aoki Interiors, Carrick Business Park, Waterford Road, Carrick-On-Suir, Co.Tipperary, T: 051 614054, www.aokiinteriors.ie

THE SAXE CHEST OF DRAWERS “This is a lovely classic French piece,” says Dorothy Power at Roche Bobois. “It’s very versatile as it can be used as a night-stand in a bedroom or in a living room. There is also a great choice of finishes and colours available, and it's even possible to have the top in a different finish creating a very unique piece. This colour ‘Prune’ is a nice change from a wood finish or black and works well in both a contemporary or more classic setting.” The Saxe chest from Les Provinciales range is a recent arrival at Roche Bobois. Numerous patina/wood finishes and colours available. L70 x H79 x D40cm. €1,742. Roche Bobois, T: 01 6531650, www.roche-bobois.com

BESPOKE GLASS LAMPSHADE “I find the beams of coloured light and the reflections cast from this lampshade particularly enchanting,” says award-winning stained glass artist Bianca Divito. “Since I was a child I have been fascinated by the qualities of glass and how it reacts to light which has led me to creating bespoke light features. This lamp works best when positioned on a low table in a darkened room as the coloured reflections from the glass are cast onto surrounding walls giving wonderful light effects that are warm and inviting. I incorporated lovely chunky glass globs into the lampshade - they have a solid and smooth texture and add weight to the piece. I also commissioned the hand forged base, which is very organic in structure.” Tiffany copper foiled bespoke glob glass lampshade with hand forged base €760 at Damien Keane Garden Design Studios, Mt. Usher Gardens, Ashford, Co. Wicklow or directly from Bianca, T: 086 8471560, www.divitostudios.com

CUSHIONS BY FIONA TURLEY

WALNUT CONSOLE TABLE BY JONATHAN CHARLES “Rather than pick a piece that would be the ‘piece of the season’ I have decided to go for a piece that I really like possibly because it exudes old world charm and character which brings me back to the early days of my business when I used to deal in antiques,” says Tom McGillycuddy. “I have chosen a replica three drawer solid walnut console table by Jonathon Charles with oak drawer interiors and a parquet top. The detail on this piece is outstanding. It has fine but strong lines following the Georgian designs of yesteryear. This is one of those pieces that will not date and I find console tables blend in most settings. Jonathan Charles produces some of the finest replicas on the market today and the quality is reflected in the price, €1,895 (135cm wide 43cm deep 86cm high).” Lots, now at Manor West in Tralee, T: 066 7197983 or 066 7127117, www.lotsworldwide.com

Artist Fiona Turley has designed cushions to add the vital splash of pattern and colour needed to cheer dull days. “The orange turquoise range is for those who want a dramatic piece of art on their sofa. The tones of orange and brown will lift any space and the bright red poppies twist and turn on the velvet backed cushions,” says Fiona who works from her studio and craft/gift store in Kilworth, Co.Cork. The cushions in four designs are priced between €35 and €36 including feather filled pad. Each of the four designs is accompanied by a plain velvet cushion. The cushions are available online at www.fionaturley.com, at Gallery Crafts, T: 025 27972, in Kilkenny Design Shops and leading interior stores.

THE CAPRI SOFA “The Capri Sofa really appeals to me because in my opinion it’s a smart sofa, perfect for my life and my family, offering beauty without compromising on style or quality,” says Tara George at Squaredeal Interiors. “Its design is innovative, created by Italian experts and crafted in luxurious soft sensual Italian leather on an open base with clean lines and a wide chaise longue that make it particularly suitable to furnish contemporary living rooms. Despite its luxurious appearance the leather requires no maintenance and just wipes clean, leaving time for me to relax on it and transport myself away from the everyday stress of life.” Available in a range of colours and combinations. Two seater from €1140 in leather, €870 in fabric. The sofa pictured from €1935 in leather, €1515 in fabric.
