The failure of our decision makers to prioritise the well being of our queer communities means that Pride as a political movement is more important now than ever. While we dance our love and celebrate our resilience, we must also ask “What can we do now together to make this change happen, when others won’t?” We create spaces to share our stories. Talk loudly of our wildest hopes and dreams. Make small gestures and big

actions that support our most exciting, creative vision for how things could be. To me Foyle Pride holds that vision for the deep transformative change that is possible when we understand that injustice to one is injustice to all. When we know that we are more than who our decision makers tell us we are, that our individual and collective power is ours to reclaim, in unison with others who are diminished. Have an uproarious Foyle Pride. Long may its big heart beat in time with that of the original Pride movement.

It’s 2018 and the policies and rights we still fight for in the North are way overdue – inclusive sex education and protection for young LGBTQI+ people in schools, better access to health services for trans people, equality in marriage, to name but a few on a long list.

We’re looking for committed and motivated people to assist the current committee in supporting and delivering Foyle Pride Festival next year and beyond. If you feel you have what it takes then please attend our annual AGM in December to put yourself forward and we’re especially keen to appoint people who have experience in fundraising and finance. We would love to hear from you. Email: eimear@foylepridefestival.com
The Foyle Pride Committee 2018 welcome you all to this our annual (and 25th) anniversary festival. This year we reflect on 25 years of LGBT+ activism in the North West and also pay tribute to the Northern Irish Civil Rights Association that inspired many of those activists. The committee would like to take this opportunity to salute all those who have campaigned in the past, whose bravery and courage has led to what we now know as Foyle Pride. Their dedication to the struggle inspires us to move forward in our demands for full equality.
This years parade, over the route of the original Civil Rights March of October 1968, will be led by Civil Rights activists present on that day including Bernadette McAliskey, Eamon McCann, Dermy McClenaghan, Kitty O’Kane, Michael Farrel and Finbarr O’Dochartaigh together with the present Foyle Pride Committee.
We have an eclectic programme including talks, theatre, film and plenty of partying. Come along and join in. Everyone welcome!

DAY ONE
MESSAGE FROM MAYOR
(25 YEARS OF FOYLE PRIDE) EXHIBITION LAUNCH
Sat 18th August // 5pm Venue: The Guildhall, Whittaker Suite I look forward to being a part of this year’s Foyle Pride event, and I want to pay tribute to the the organisers who strive both to empower and to raise awareness about issues affecting the LGBT community. I want to encourage everyone to come along and show their support for equality, diversity and freedom during this joyful celebration.
Official launch of Foyle Pride Festival 2018 with the Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council and special guests. RSVP eimear@ foylepridefestival.com
Sat 18th August // 9pm Venue: Ulster Bank Building, Waterloo Place The exhibition will look at the last twenty five years of LGBTQ+ history in Derry and the North West. Using photographs, video, newspaper, journals other forms of media, it will reflect on a journey that has experienced many struggles and hardships but now finds our community in a much better place even if we are still denied equality of citizenship. It will also reiterate our determination to achieve those outstanding demands. Foyle Pride are delighted that Frankie O’Rielly will launch the exhibition. Frankie has lived in London for more than forty years. Aged sixteen he literally left school, then Derry when it was near impossible to live in a City in turmoil. For those of us who arrived in London after him he was an inspiration – out, proud and confident. He has had a very interesting life and is an important and integral part of contemporary queer history. We hope he will share some of that life history with us on this, his first Foyle Pride.
SUNDAY 19Th AUGUST
The Festival is a celebration of diversity and equality which draws a growing audience of all generations each year. The 2018 programme offers an eclectic mix of political, artistic and cultural events to challenge, stimulate and educate in equal measure – with plenty of fun for all ages.
GAY’S THE WORD
PRIDE LAUNCH & AWARDS
As Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District I am delighted to be associated with the Foyle Pride Festival and to offer my support for what has become one of the city’s most colourful and enjoyable celebrations. On beginning my term as First Citizen, I pledged that I would be a Mayor for all citizens, and that to the best of my ability I would serve with integrity and honesty, regardless of religion, class, colour, sexual orientation, gender or political affiliation. I want to pay tribute to all associated with Foyle Pride who have already been flying the flag for inclusivity and acceptance for many years, often in the face of prejudice and animosity.

LGBT history matters. Our stories from the past help us build our sense of community, culture and identity. Join us for an evening of debate and discussion with Dr. Brian Lacey, author of Terrible Queer Creatures: A History of Homosexuality in Ireland and Hilary McCollum writer and author of Life and Love Lesbian Style. Hilary McCollum will explore the evidence that a number of women leading the campaign for women’s suffrage in Ireland had lesbian relationships and this talk will be followed by a Q&A session. There were no gay organisations or facilities in Derry when Brian Lacey first came here in 1974. He was one of the people who helped set some up - including Carafriend, gay discos at Magee, and the first Pride festival in 1993. He will reflect on those events and some of his personal experiences in Derry during those years.

Deaglan O’Donghaile FHEA Senior Lecturer in English Literature John Moore’s University Liverpool. A committed believer in Walter Pater’s aesthetic ideals, Oscar Wilde also supported the political objectives of Irish republicanism. As a literary figure and public intellectual, he made his views clear from an early stage in his career, declaring in 1882 that ‘with the coming of the English… art in Ireland came to an end, and it has had no existence for over seven hundred years. I am glad it has not, for art cannot live and flourish under a tyrant.’ Addressing the Irish context behind Wilde’s aesthetic practices and beliefs, Dr Ó Donghaile will discuss his radical position on the crises that shook Ireland

An intense relationship develops that could change Johnny’s life forever. Nominated for a BAFTA. Director: Francis Lee.

There was a lot of media earlier this summer about the homophobic laws in Commonwealth countries. These countries were being criticised by the British monarchy (and British MPs) for their backward stances. However, nothing was said about the context of these laws, such as the fact that most of these laws were brought to these countries through British colonialism. Therefore, we want to look at examples of LGBTQ+ organisations in Commonwealth countries that are fighting homophobia and the legacy of colonialism. We thought this would be an interesting talk given that we are in N. Ireland - the last place in these islands without marriage equality.

LET’S TALK, LET’S ACT AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA AND TRANSPHOBIA Fri 24th August // 5pm-7pm Venue: Holywell Trust Adm: FREE What is homo- and transphobia? Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual. The same applies for transgender people experiencing transphobia. The PSNI have reported a rise in homophobic and transphobic incidents in recent years and we seem to see more and more LGBT hate crime stories spilling through social media every day. This event aims to question why Homophobia and transphobia exists and what we as young queer individuals can do to challenge it in our daily lives.

Set in the late 80s/early 90s, 120 BPM concentrates on the Parisian branch of AIDS activist group ACT UP, who, when not taking their struggles to big pharmaceutical offices and the streets, fight it out among themselves. With seemingly no help on the horizon and no future for those afflicted, it was very much a matter of life and death, and tempers frayed accordingly. “This is pure cinema ~ an enthralling, enveloping experience that seizes you fully, effortlessly mixing politics, sex, life, death and art.” ~ Alex Godfrey, Empire France.2017. Director: Robin Campillo. Cast: Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Ariel Borenstein. Duration: 2hrs.23mins. Cert: 18. Language: French with English subtitles.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the first Civil Rights March in the North (Coalisland to Dungannon Aug 24th 1968) Foyle Pride present a discussion on the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the LGBTQ+ community and our campaigns for equality and legislative change. Our panel includes Bernadette McAliskey who was on that first march and would go on to become a pivotal figure in the movement for change. Still actively campaigning on social justice issues Bernadette is joined by Ailbhe Smyth, a prominent figure in the Marriage Equality and Repeal the 8th campaigns in the South, and Eimear Willis, the youngest person to ever Chair Foyle Pride. Former Chair and one of the organisers of the first ever Foyle Pride Parade Sha Gillespie will chair this discussion and everybody is welcome. A panel of great women and many words!
