FOYLE PRIDE FESTIVAL | 1
Saturnalia was an ancient Roman festival in honour of Saturn the god of agriculture. It was a celebration of goodwill towards people who were divided by strict Roman rules governing social class especially slaves. During this time slaves were allowed to swap their roles with their masters and dine on fine food and wine and enjoy the illusion of a life not granted to them that was cruelly taken away after a week of celebrations. Saturnalia grew from a celebration to a desire - a desire to break the chains of slavery and experience freedom, liberation, equality and dreaming of a better future. A desire that we still feel to this day.
Welcome... It is indeed an honour to be asked by this year’s committee to open this short introduction. I have been involved with Foyle Pride for many years and so proud to be a part of the first pride parade in the city. I have seen it grow from strength to strength. It is a credit to all those involved that Foyle Pride remains true to the principles of the wider LGBTQ campaign for full equality and civil, social and human rights. This year we remember those less fortunate than ourselves in places as diverse as Uganda,Russia, Pakistan, Iran and indeed Orlando,Florida. We remain committed to campaigning on their behalf.

Pride is also a celebration and we rejoice in the advances that we have made and will continue to make. We recognise that the battle for Marriage Equality has not yet been realised here in the North as yet, but we are confident of victory in the near future. We thank the current Health Minister for her removal of the ridiculous lifetime ban on gay men donating blood and we appreciate all the help and support from those who support our right to live as equals. I will end with a quote from Audre Lorde “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” Café Soul

‘Pride in Your Health’ MOT Day The Foyle Arena Adm: FREE Drop into The Rainbow Project’s health day taking place upstairs in the Foyle Arena. Come and get your blood pressure and carbon monoxide tested by a pharmacist and have the opportunity to ask pharmaceutical advice, and take advantage of our rapid HIV and syphilis testing service. No appointment is necessary and we’ll be testing throughout the day. People will also be there to provide hand massage and health information throughout the day. As well as this, we will also have the following workshops and taster sessions available: Healthy eating workshop with dietician, Mindy Perley-Martin Yoga taster with Caitlin Gallagher Badminton taster with the Foyle Arena Positive mental health talk with Counsellor Dean Lee and Counsellor Caitlin Gallagher

A favourite son of both Manchester and his home town Liverpool Gerry Potter has been wowing audiences nationally with his own unique brand of domestic-fantastic free verse. Gerry has a reputation for putting his Scouse voice on the line a soaring sing-song accent, strong on poetry and strong on the causes of poetry.

Still Coming Out of Conflict Tues 23rd August | 7pm VOID, Patrick Street Adm. FREE In 2016 there are many parts of the world in which living as an LGBT person remains extremely difficult, if not impossible. While some of these places seem far afield, others are right in our own backyard. Rampant homophobia, violence and oppression have shaped the lives of each of the panelist. Hear from a variety of perspectives and their fight for a more equal world. Speakers: Dean Lee: Counsellor with the Rainbow Project, organiser of LGBT BME support groups in Belfast. YES Donegal activist Sinead Murray Lynch: A year after the Marriage Equality Vote, Donegal still has to combat homophobia. Abdul Rawashda: A Palestinian gay man who has seeked assylum in Norway, following detention for his sexual orientation in Palestine, Norwegian ‘Gay of the Year’ in 2013. Also speaking is one of the many sons of Derry who felt forced out of the city back in the 70s. FREE Les Ismore hosts a game show/meltdown in which three randomly chosen contestants compete for the Star prize of a trip to EuroBarries in Portrush! AND the chance to become Quizzical Champion!! Like a mythological creature comprised of equal parts game show and man, Les Ismore has straddled the enraged bullock that is Light Entertainment in Ulster for 3 decades. From a boyhood compering illegal games of “Back Alley Bullseye” to his recent run as host of Channel 9’s unfairly maligned “Extreme Musical Chairs”.
Bennigan’s Film Club Screening: ‘In The Turn’ Wed 24th August | 9.30pm Bennigan’s Bar, John Street Adm. £4 A documentary about a 10-year-old transgender girl who finds acceptance and empowerment in the company of a queer roller derby collective.
Les will be joined on the night by the woman who puts the Trance into Entrancing, Dawn Donmey, who despite suffering recent multiple head traumas will be there to ably assist all things Quizzical. “Let’s Get Quizzical” is created and performed by Rory Mc Swiggan, Caoimhe Sweeney, John Leighton and Matthew Mc Devitt and is a regular Wednesday night fixture of Bennigans, Derry.

Love is a human right. And we aim to celebrate love on this day. Come along to this special celebration of love… ‘A chaotic embrace’ seeks to engage people by asking them to embrace the spontaneity of the present moment and open to experiencing the heartfelt emotion of witnessing an unplanned and unexpected celebration/ritual of love between two people unknown to them; and in doing hope to subvert beliefs and conceptions commonly held around love and the ritual of marriage and open a dialogue around the essential nature and purpose of romantic union.

We Won’t Wait: The fight for marriage equality Thurs 25th August | 6.30pm City Hotel, Queens Quay Adm. FREE Northern Ireland remains the only place in these islands without Equal Marriage. After the successful referendum in Ireland last year, hopes and expectations have been raised to push through equality here as well. This panel explores the organising, activism and fight that won Equal Marriage in the rest of the UK and the Republic of Ireland and aims to point the way forward for Equality in the North.
