B I N D I M U

Bindimu is an artist who has focused on her DJ career recently, PLAYING AT SOME BIG FESTIVALS AS WELL AS SMALLER COMMUNITY BASED EVENTS. She is always evolving in her creativity and finding new ways to express herself.

Hey Bindimu, A lot has been happening since the last time you spoke with Focus in the form of music. Tell us what you have been up to?

It’s been an interesting year with DJing, I’ve been a part of some amazing community based festivals and events. I also performed at Splendour for the first time. In the new year however, I’ll only be DJing at events that I’ll be producing and hosting, or community based events/festivals and focusing more on production. What was it that drew you to pick up the decks and want to DJ.

like to dive deeper into the roots of DJing and respect the culture. Are you creating your own music?

I’ve been producing basic soundscapes for my work as an artist. My focus at the moment has been creating mash up/ remixes featuring the voices of staunch Indigenous and Black women. Who inspires you the most musically?

As an Indigenous person, music has always been a part of my life so it was more like bringing my focus onto music in my career. All of my art practices kind of speak to each other.

My sisters and I used to have dance parties in the lounge room, listening to Missy Elliott, and I actually used to think about being a DJ. In 2018 I was working a lot more closely with musos and finally decided to stop joking around and jump on the decks. I would

Jazz musicians have always been a big inspiration for me. The dance between structure, skill and free flow improv speak to me a lot when I’m creating, but above all, my Kin and my Country. If I ever decide to really create music, it will be for Country and for my people. That is my biggest inspiration. Too many of our ancient songs have been taken and hidden and I want to make an emphasis on preserving traditional music and not just assimilating our songs and stories into westernised forms of music.

B I N D I M U

You have recently played at Splendour in the Grass. What was the experience of playing at a big festival like for you?

Honestly, it was exhausting. The excitement of playing music for, and by Blak artists for a commercial audience would’ve been amazing but was overshadowed by the continued disregard for my ancestral homelands. I put a lot of thought and mana into DJing so the experience was disappointing. The “north Byron parklands” are an important site for Minyangbal Bundjalung people and is one of the last corridors between the coast and ancient rainforest in that area. It stems from a deeper conversation and I’ve written a huge blog post about it that you can read in full on my website. You have performed alongside your partner, what is it like working together

creatively?

It’s been an amazing eye opener. We are all universes, and art and creativity can bring out practices and conversations that you may not have had otherwise. Our studios are attached, so it’s amazing that my partner and I find inspiration in each other’s practice, seeing our artworks/music from new perspectives/ dimensions and get to see each other in our creative mode.

You’re an artist not just musically, as you also create wearable pieces. Can you tell us about that and what it’s been like

transitioning from creating with your hands to creating music?

As an Indigenous person, music has always been a part of my life so it was more like bringing my focus onto music in my career. All of my art practices kind of speak to each other. I’m honoured to also be able to create wearable art for other performing artists and collaborate with them on unique styles. Where can people follow along your journey or have a listen?

Check out my website, I upload some of my short DJ mixes and you’ll find all my art, homewares and jewellery. bindimu.com/redbelly

MARTIN

Sam Martin is a local orthopaedic surgeon who recently took part in the incredibly challenging Simpson Desert Bike Challenge to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

20 COFFS COAST focus

Hey Sam, you recently took part in quite the adventure competing in the Desert Challenge.

What is the Simpson Desert Bike Challenge?

The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge is a fund raising adventure pushbike race. It’s run every year since 1987. It crosses one of Australia’s largest deserts - the wild and remote Simpson. This year it started at Purni Bore in South Australia and finished at Birdsville in Queensland.

The race takes place over 5 days. What is the format of the event?

There was a morning ride each day starting at 6. That was typically 70 km. Then there was a break for lunch followed by an afternoon ride of about 50 km. Every day was different,

the longest day was 134 km. On the third day there was a night stage instead of an afternoon ride. In all the stages you had to keep up an average speed of at least 12 kph or you would get picked up, “swept” for that stage.

very captivating about the outback.

As a doctor, I appreciate the amazing work that RFDS do for the residents and visitors in the more remote areas of Australia. Also, my wife Annemarie came to Australia from the Netherlands as a final year medical student to do a term with the RFDS in Broken Hill. That led to her staying here and us meeting, so I have a lot to be grateful to the RFDS for!

Why did you choose to take part in the challenge?

I went there for the adventure and the challenge and to see the sights as well as to raise money for a good cause. I would go back for the people. It was really a great bunch!

I’ve explored the outback very little. Until April this year, the furthest I had been west (aside from the WA coast) was Washpool National Park. We have made a few family trips this year and for me there is something

You couldn't just take the run of the mill mountain bike. What sort of bike did you need?

Almost all the riders were on fat bikes with tyres 4 inches wide or more - mine were 5 inches wide. A tubeless setup was also very important with sealant inside the tyres. There are so many sharp spiky things in the desert, you basically end up riding around with thumbtack type thorns (cats claws) stuck in your tyres. Continued over...

SIMPSON DESER T BIKE CHALLENG
E

When we hear the word desert we think of soft sandy dunes as far as the eye can see. What was the terrain like?

It’s a really unusual area. I have never seen quite such a lot of not much! Normally if you had an enormous national park there would be some focal points like a mountain, waterfall or lake. This is just hundreds of kilometres of stunning colour and detail and open spaces. The sky is very big out there. There was much more vegetation than I expected. The areas between the dunes (swales) are covered in shrubs and little trees and even the dunes have grass and flowers on them.

The riding was really varied as well with firm ground between the dunes and soft sand on top. There was also mud and huge salt flats. A whole lot of not much! What was each day like for you, from first to last?

Well each day got progressively harder until the 4th day which was the longest, with the highest and softest sand dunes. The first day was a bit of a gentle introduction, it was “only” about 100 km and the dunes were small and the ground was mostly firm. On the 2nd day there was a strong headwind and I struggled against that until I worked out the right tyre pressure. That was the closest I got to the sweep in the whole ride and it was

stressful. I very clearly recall the relief after 50 km of riding into the wind when the course turned north with the wind. At that point I still wasn’t sure I could ride the whole 500 km and I wasn’t sure how much energy to save for the challenges to come.

The third day was when I realised that if I rode slow and steady, I would be able to keep up the 12 kph and ride across the whole desert. The fourth day was the biggest. The morning was hard going with dunes getting bigger and bigger. I foolishly started the afternoon of the 4th day by pulling out one of the thumb tack thorns which gave me a leak on the starting line of that stage. Luckily when I rolled the wheel around in the sand it sealed up. The 4th afternoon was a struggle and riding in a group helped a whole lot with the wind but more importantly morale. The 5th day was just a fun ride around the dunes of big red and little red and then on into Birdsville where the celebrations began.

Just getting there was an adventure. The wonderful Mr Peter Wood was my support. He did a great job by the way! Peter has a lot of experience in the desert. He advised 5 days to get to the race start. The event was in the September school holidays, so I tried to minimise the time away from my family. As an orthopaedic surgeon, it can also be tricky to take a lot of time off. That gave us a strict schedule.

We left Coffs at lunchtime on the Friday and arrived in Birdsville late on Saturday. Then, to get to the start of the ride we drove across the Simpson desert in 15 hours. Poeppel corner is less than half-way across the desert at the junction of the Northern Territory, QLD

and SA. We were there at 2.30 pm and asked another group what the chance of making it to Purni Bore that day was. “None” was the answer, which spurred us on. They were right though, we got to Purni Bore at 12:30 AM. That was still ok, giving us a buffer the next day in case we needed to keep going further to get fuel. We weren’t sure until we got to Purni Bore how much fuel we needed to drive most of the way across the desert and back without filling up.

The mental, physical and emotional challenges of the ride are all a blur of sand, wind, corrugations, early mornings, bodily discomfort and sharp things! The tip of the little finger of my right hand is still partially numb. Luckily, it’s getting better and doesn’t interfere with surgery as I am left handed. What did you learn about yourself taking part?

I learned that I should listen to people’s advice a bit more carefully! I was advised to get nice soft bar grips before I left, but I thought the ones I had were ok. I was advised the particular tyres I had were hard work to ride long distances which turned out to be true. I was advised 3 days wasn’t really

enough to get to the centre of Australia from Coffs. I also learned that at the same time, sometimes you just have to go for it. How was the atmosphere amongst the riders? Amazing. It was a unique group of adventurous, supportive, like minded and fun people. Even though it was a race, everyone

was working together. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a group quite like it. You competed for the incredible charity Royal Flying Doctors. How much was raised from the event?

Over $25,000! Would you ever take part in the race again?

Yes absolutely. I've got nice soft bar grips now! Thanks Sam.

Hi ILLY. Has music always been something you have felt connected with and what are some of your earlier memories of feeling like this was something you could do?

Hey, yeah I’ve always loved music. I think it’s the same for most people right? I started listening to my parents' music, and whatever was playing on the radio and TV when I was very young. By the time I started high school I was finding my own taste, and pretty quickly found rap and hip hop and from then never really looked back. I’d say from 12/13 I started writing my own raps, so it was pretty quick. As far as becoming a rapper, I kind of just went from writing in my bedroom, to rapping with friends at parties, to open mic nights, to hype man for others, to an opener, to a main support, to doing my own shows. It’s been a pretty clear path, but I guess I didn’t really think it was a career until 100+ shows in haha!

Why Hip Hop? What is it about this genre that you love most?

When did you first start writing your own lyrics?

Pretty young to be honest. Around 12/13. I had a drum kit for about 6 months and was in a band. Then I really fell in love with hip hop, got rid of the drums, and pretty quickly started emulating the music I was listening to. I’m really happy this was before IG and Tiktok because I’m sure it was all awful, but you’ve got to start somewhere!

Where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from currently?

Same as always, from my life, my experiences, and usually try to zoom out from there and make it something that other people can feel too.

How has the Australian Hip Hop scene changed since you started creating music?

From the jump, if you’re not good on a stage, you’ll know, very quickly, because the crowd won’t react, so I’ve always wanted to put on a good show.

I love that you can say really whatever you want, that aspect has always drawn me in. There’s also such a huge range of what a rap song can sound like, so there’s room to try new things in a song, whether it’s stylistic, melodic, whatever. It was never just hip hop, but I think that having that as the base helped me massively, once people got used to rap in an Australian accent.

When I was starting writing music as a kid, Australian hip hop was entirely underground. The idea of having a ‘career’ in it, wasn’t really a thing. I was lucky that people like the Hilltop Hoods, Drapht etc came before me and opened doors up, that my generation was able to move through. It’s changed almost completely since then. And it keeps changing, keeps moving forward. I think social media has played a huge part in the change recently, so now artists are speaking directly to their fanbase, so it’s a lot easier to get out there.

Do you have a current favourite song on your playlist?

All my own demos I’m working on haha!

Oh and Ya Rab by Babyface Mal. You’re becoming well-known for your live performances, what makes your performance stand out do you think?

Yeah, we have always been killer live. It’s from playing so many shows, really. From the jump, if you’re not good on a stage, you’ll know, very quickly, because the crowd won’t react so I’ve always wanted to put on a good show. I’ve got two of the best in the business, Ben Ellingworth and Patrick Gabriel on stage with me who have the same mentality. No matter who is on before or after us, we will put on a better show than them. I think going in with that mindset is what gives us our edge on stage.

What do you hope people are feeling when they come away from one of your live shows?

I really just hope people are like “f** that was good”. A lot of the time people know the songs, but don’t know me, or know me and the songs, but don’t fully connect with them, until they see one of our shows. I think we usually get our point across.

You are playing a concert at the Hoey Moey here in Coffs on New Year’s Eve, what can people expect from this show?

A really big night! New Year’s is always a big night whatever, but getting to spend it on stage makes it that much better. We will be sure to bring the party with us!

What is one of your favourite NYE memories?

Honestly, there’s been more bangers than duds haha. I’ve spent almost all of them on a stage somewhere. So the one good thing about 2020/21 was being stuck in Melbourne with friends, because COVID meant there were no gigs. But I’m very, very, VERY happy to leave that a 1 of 1 experience.

ILLY is playing at the Hoey Moey THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE AND WE’VE HEARD HE PUTS ON A KILLER LIVE SHOW! AS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST HIP HOP ACTS we are pretty excited to see him coming to Coffs for the occasion.

This month I have the pleasure of interviewing Keziah. They are a peer support worker as well as a coordinator of BYP (Be Young and Proud) group that meets fortnightly and works in with our diverse youth. Being December and with Christmas and many festivities coming upon us I wanted to get some tips!

Keziah, can you tell our readers a bit about you and your peer support role with BYP. I would love to! Peer support is a lived experience role. I have grown up queer and experienced the struggles that a lot of young people face both being queer and with mental health. I role model a lot of how to be in the community, building tolerance and how they can support each other when they are going through tough times. I try to create a fun and educational safe space.

What do you see as challenging for the youth in BYP in social settings? There are so many challenges, some I can think of off the top of my head are always having to be the educators of the community. If you have never met a queer person then you probably have a lot of questions and usually it is up to them to answer them. It is a lot, even for someone like me who has decided to be an educator and advocator for the community, so have compassion for your queer young person if they tell you to google it! They have probably answered that question a hundred times!

Also, living in a regional area there is this constant struggle of whether it’s safe. Your young person is probably carrying around this weight of worry over whether they are going to be bullied or invalidated by adults in their life if they show their authentic self. It’s a lot to carry. Make sure your young person knows that you are an ally. Do you have any great tips when they are faced with pressures at holiday gatherings?

To queer young people I say, you’re not alone. Holidays and family gatherings can be hard because sometimes we must hide or water down our authentic selves for our safety. Please don’t feel invalidated in your identity, your safety is important and I recommend finding an ally in your family for support during the event.

And to people who want to support, make sure they know you are an ally, educate others

at the gathering and don’t leave it up to your queer young person. It’s game changing to have someone speak out in the support of the community.

Can you expand on BYP and who may be interested in participating? BYP is for young people aged 12 to 25. It happens twice a month at Groundworks in Coffs. It’s a place for young queer people to come and be authentic, meet others in the community and also to learn about all the supports there are in our area. I’m so excited aboout it! We would love to have you.

I also want to shout out another project I have been a part of. It is the Local Queer Podcast, a podcast made by queer young people for anyone who wants to learn more!

If you are interested in finding out more about BYP then feel free to call Groundworks on 5632 4020.

When did you first become interested in cookery as a career?

I found myself coming out of Year 12 with a passion for food and the drive to succeed in what I do best. What training did you undertake and where was your first job?

I have had the opportunity to work for a variety of fine dining restaurants in my 17 years in the industry starting my first job at Annuka Beach Resort here in Coffs Harbour I followed on in Brisbane and Sydney areas such as The Hilton, Aria, Wildfire and Redland Bay. From there I returned home and was given the opportunity to become head chef at Papa H’s. When it comes to creating a seasonal menu, what do you take into consideration?

I like to consider what people want from a menu by what’s in season. I always ask myself how I can make it better and how can I make the classics different while still coming in at a good price.

What local produce features on the menu at The Coast Hotel?

Our whole menu is to touch a little for everyone, whether you are after a light snack, something to share or a nice steak. What is your favourite dish on the menu currently and why?

I like to consider what people want from a menu by what’s in season, fruit and veg wise. I always ask myself how I can make it better and how can I make the classics different while still coming in at a good price.

My favourite dishes are our premium steaks and our fresh fish specials. These dishes give me the creativity to do something different and to showcase our diversity.

When it comes to special events and functions, what range of food and services can you offer?

I have had a lot of fun in creating our function menu. I didn’t want it to be bland and basic. We can cater to any dietary requirements needed for any event. Where do you source new ideas from?

I pride myself with the strong team and background of knowledge that we use to work

together to create new great ideas. What would you say is the biggest influence in your cooking?

Probably the high standards set by my previous Head and Executive Chefs. When I make something I'm always asking if it would pass or be good enough to serve.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy cooking?

Outside of work now is cooking with my kids, they are my number one fans and critics. How often do you change the menu?

We change the menu every season, we have just launched our Summer menu at the Coast. Do you have a favourite ingredient to work with?

This is a hard one. My fridge and dry store are full of fresh ingredients, depends on how I feel on the day as to what I want to create. Thanks Josh.

CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE

SUPPORTING THE UNITING CHURCH SOUP KITCHEN

Over the last few years, Sawtell RSL has developed a close relationship with the Uniting Church Soup Kitchen, supporting them by way of food drives and as recipients of our Club Grants Scheme.

We are once again, asking our wonderful community to support our 5th Christmas Food Drive by adding a few extra items to your next grocery shop and dropping them off to the Club’s reception. The food donations provide the soup kitchen with the ingredients they require to create nutritious, tasty meals for the local homeless who use the service that is run entirely by volunteers.

Items needed include, non-perishables, canned items that have a ring pull seal including canned meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, custard, long life milk, noodles, pasta, coffee and tea bags, sugar, corn flour, cereal boxes (individual serve boxes), mayonnaise, pickles and paper towels to mention a few.

The demand on the kitchen has grown over

time but the volunteer team have a policy that “no one is refused a meal. You come in, you sit down at one of the tables and we will serve you. No questions asked”. Items can be dropped off at the club until Sunday December 18. For any more information, please call Kate Drum on 6653 1577

What makes Maria's so special and a must-do when looking to dine out?

Italian families love to socialise and celebrate together. At Maria’s we see our customers as extended family.

Our newly refurbished restaurant offers a family-friendly dining experience that truly brings a touch of Italy to Coffs Harbour. It’s the perfect place for families and friends to gather and indulge in good company, good food and good wine…the Italian way. Tell us about your menu, what do you find is the most popular dish for customers?

Maria’s menu offers all your favourite Italian comfort foods with a modern twist, and a focus on fresh local produce.

One of our most popular dishes is the Whole Garlic King Prawns pan seared in garlic confit butter, Italian herbs & white wine, served on a thick slice of ciabatta to soak up all the delicious sauce. Our signature slow braised Lamb Ragu Pappardelle topped with mint gremolata & freshly shaved pecorino cheese is also a favourite.

Pizza lovers can delve into the Signorina Porcellino with chorizo, bacon, pancetta, red

onion, capsicum and basil or try the Agnello with our slow braised lamb, roasted capsicum, red onion, cherry tomatoes, topped with our house made mint yoghurt and fresh mint.

And of course, an Italian meal wouldn’t be complete without a divine dolce of deep-fried vanilla cream cannoli and berry compote or our Limoncello Tart with passionfruit coulis, crushed meringue & fresh strawberries. Maria's has a big history here in businesscan you tell us more?

Maria’s is synonymous with the iconic Jetty strip. We have been serving delicious Italian inspired food to locals and visitors alike for over 35 years.

After a 12-month hiatus, we re-opened in May 2022 and were overwhelmed by the support from our customers, old and new when we announced we were back! While our location on the Jetty strip is new, you can still expect the same delicious Italian fare just like Nonna makes, with a new ambience to dine in.

Food equals love and tradition in Italian culture. If you enjoy Italian food and eating, you’re going to love visiting us at Maria's! Have you found that after a tumultuous few years that people are excited to dine out again? What is your feedback?

COVID most definitely changed the landscape of hospitality. In general, people

are excited to be dining out again, socialising with friends and family, going on date nights and enjoying the ambience local restaurants have to offer. We have loved welcoming our customers back to Maria’s in a slightly more intimate venue where patrons can experience excellent customer service, quality food at reasonable prices and a great selection of wines or a delicious Italian cocktail. Besides dine in, people can order online and there is also an App – tell us more.

For the nights you want to stay in, our extensive takeaway menu offers all your pizza and pasta favourites, ordering is easy with the Maria’s Restaurant App. You can download the App from our website and have Maria’s at your fingertips.

Coffs Coast BUSINESSES

SHINE AT NSW TOURISM AWARDS

The Coffs Coast has a lot to be proud of, with four businesses taking home prizes at this year's prestigious NSW Tourism Awards. Six businesses were nominated for awards across six different categories at the prestigious NSW Tourism Awards.

This impressive feat showcases everything that makes our region great- from its dedication to sustainability and accessibility, to its strong Indigenous advocacy values. It also goes to show that travellers looking for an amazing experience should put the Coffs Coast on their bucket list!

Riverside Holiday Resort was the Gold winner of the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards for Excellence in Accessible Tourism. Riverside Holiday Resort is located next to the river in the tranquil Urunga. The resort affords 40 architecturally designed, spacious selfcontained two-bedroom apartments, with 14 upstairs, 21 ground-floor accessible, and 5 that are wheelchair-accessible. Riverside Holiday Resort proudly embodies a positive culture of inclusiveness in every aspect of the guest experience.

Wajaana Yaam Gumbaynggirr Adventure Tours was the Gold winner of the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards for Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Tourism Experience.

Wajaana Yaam Gumbaynggirr Adventure Tours is a 100% Aboriginal-owned business on the

Coffs Harbour Coast offering 2.5 hours of cultural stand-up paddle tours. With a social purpose of supporting the local Aboriginal Community, they are driven to offer a quality authentic product to their guests and to the wider tourism industry. Their tours take the guest on a journey through the Gumbaynggirr culture highlighting traditional stories, bush tucker and language.

The Coffs Coast Food & Wine Festival won the Bronze Prize in the Festivals Category. An outstanding achievement for a first-year event competing amongst long-standing festivals with decades of history such as Gold Prize winner Tumbafest. With a small team of just 2 people, Lindsay Russell and Dave Mansfield produced 17 events over 10 days in June 2022. Their festival hasn’t ended yet though, their finale celebration was postponed due to extreme weather, so you’ll be able to experience The Coffs Coast Food & Wine Festival at their Summer Sesh this November 26 & 27 at Jetty Beach House.

Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation won the Bronze Prize for Aboriginal & Torres Straight Islander Tourism Category. The programs that they deliver are

designed to ensure that Aboriginal youth are strong in terms of both cultural identity and educational success. It is their goal that our children complete and achieve at school at the same rate as all Australian children in order to compete for real jobs whilst also being knowledgeable and proud of who they are as Aboriginal people.

The Forestry Corporation, based in Coffs Harbour, was the recipient of a Ground Swell Award for their sustainability and conservation efforts with Take 3 for the Sea’s Ground Swell Campaign. The Big Banana Fun Park and The Observatory Holiday Apartments were also nominated for awards, a huge feat amongst such a large number of tourism businesses throughout NSW.

These awards are a testament to the hard work of local businesses and their commitment to showcasing what the Coffs Coast has to offer travellers even through such difficult times. We are sure this isn’t the last of awards for the area as tourist numbers continue to climb into this picturesque corner of Australia. So congratulations again everyone who participated – we can’t wait to see what you do next!

PAT CONAGHAN MP

YOUR FEDERAL MEMBER FOR COWPER

So Pat, it’s been a big year for you, how are you feeling as we wrap up 2022?

As we see out the year 2022, it’s time to reflect on the year that was. We saw an election, a change of Federal Government, learning to live with COVID-19 and a natural disaster or two, to name a few memorable moments.

Through all of this we have seen camaraderie, community spirit and the everpresent ability of regional people to roll up their sleeves and get on with the job, even when things aren’t going our way. It’s that very tenacity that I take with me to Parliament to fight for a fair go for the Mid North Coast and, despite a change of the guard, I will continue to do just that!

As we head into a new year with renewed focus and positivity, I would welcome any thoughts or concerns from the community that affect our electorate. Your input drives change, and I encourage people to call, email, make an appointment with my office or attend a mobile office to discuss ideas and issues. Together we can make our region stronger.

It was great to see some funding reinstated as a result of your recent efforts in Parliament. Can you tell us what

happened?

I recently called on the Albanese Government to reinstate the funding provided in the previous Coalition budget to an organisation called Fortem; an Australian organisation dedicated to the mental health treatment of front line workers and first responders. As a former Police Officer, I am incredibly passionate about the provision of mental health services for those who serve and protect us.

In Labor’s budget, this service had $8 million taken away that would have gone to the continuation of it’s current offices, one of which we have in Port Macquarie, and the expansion to Townsville, Ballina, Albury-Wodonga, Gippsland, Dubbo, Nowra, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Darwin, Launceston and Perth.

I could not allow existing services to be removed and argued for service expansion. In a region such as ours that has seen fire and floods, people losing lives and homes, we owe it to those who answer our call to now answer theirs when they deal with PTSD and the mental and emotional aftermath.

I’m relieved to say that the Prime Minister heard the call and reinstated the funding – a decision that is a welcome relief for our first responders. Thank you to all of you, past and

present.

We saw your updates on the Mid North Coast Veteran’s Hubs and your fight for funding to support them. How are things progressing?

It was fantastic to see the Fortem funding reinstated, but yes, we are still waiting for any funding to be confirmed for our critical Mid North Coast Veteran Wellbeing Hubs, despite it being previously budgeted for.

I spoke on this issue again in Parliament and I believe that the merits here mirror the merits of the Fortem funding, so I can’t understand why there is any delay or hesitation in reinstating it.

How a cost-effective model that would see not just one but four centres service the largest cohort of Veterans in NSW was overlooked is beyond comprehension.

The same $5 million required to achieve this has instead been apportioned to single centres servicing smaller numbers and covering less distance.

I will continue pushing for the funds to be re-instated, just as I did for our First Responders. Our local Veterans deserve nothing less.

Any final words for the year?

Have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you in 2023!

STATE OF PLAY

Work continues to surge ahead on the Coffs Harbour Bypass with construction due to begin in early 2023. Early works have been under way for some time, and now we are starting to see the project really ramp up. We recently celebrated the arrival of a $6m Rural Fire Service helicopter to be permanently based in Coffs Harbour. I started lobbying the then Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott in 2019 for this helicopter asset that can fulfill multiple roles including search and rescue. This year we also made improvements to IPTAAS. The Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme is changing the lives of regional patients in Coffs Harbour with a $149.5m funding boost statewide helping with financial aid for people seeking treatment away from home. We’re also helping with the cost of living by launching a $250 Travel Card for regional apprentices and university students.

Bringing the NRL to Coffs Harbour on a permanent basis is another goal and I’m glad we were able to secure funding for next year’s round.

We’re also helping councils by investing $50 million to help fix the increasing number of potholes brought on by this year’s extreme weather through the Fixing Local Roads Pothole Repair Round. This year also saw the Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School move forward in leaps and bounds. It’s so important to preserve indigenous languages and I’m confident this school will be a model for others to copy in the years to come. We also funded an additional $185,508 to train teachers at the school.

The Coffs Harbour Kart Racing Club secured

$2.165m for a major upgrade of their track and facilities. It adds another world class facility to our region which boosts tourism and makes our city a better place to be.

2022 has also been a tough year for many in our state. Our neighbours to the north in the Clarence and Richmond catchments had a significant flooding event which will take years to recover from, followed later by the Hawkesbury region, and then the west of the state has seen catastrophic flooding in November.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I hope you’re able to relax and enjoy some down time with friends and family.

PAUL T I D E Y

Hey Paul, tell us where your photography journey began?

I’ve always had a love of photography, but it really started when I began working in a toy shop in Lithgow, which had a developing mini-lab and a small camera section in it. Every lunch time I would read camera brochures, waiting for my opportunity to work in the Lab. We shortly became a Fletchers Fotographics franchise and I not only sold cameras, but took photos, developed, printed and enlarged photos. I then moved to England to work in a photography store, where I changed how the store functioned by actively engaging with customers to create individual experiences, rather than the stuffy ‘behind the counter’ service. By the time I left a year later, everyone was out on the floor serving.

I returned to Bathurst where I managed a Fletchers store for 6 years winning “Most Improved Store” and ”Franchise of the Year”. Circumstances changed and I moved to Coffs Harbour 22 years ago, working in the photographic industry for Camera House. So, I have been around cameras and taking photos for the past 35 years. It still excites me to work in an ever-changing environment, where current advances in technology surpass where we thought cameras would ever be. What type of equipment do you predominantly use?

Working in a camera store and teaching

photography has allowed me to own many different cameras from a variety of brands, including Olympus, Nikon, Yashica and Bronica. After 34 years of shooting predominantly Nikon, I jumped ship to Canon and now own a R5 mirrorless full frame camera. I shoot with three different lenses; a 15-35 wide angle for landscape, astro and portraits, a 24-70 general purpose fast lens and a 70-200, an awesome portrait lens and mid size telephoto for sport and motorsport. I also use Godox flashes for on and off camera portable lighting. How would you best describe your work?

Over the years my work has developed and changed. I suppose you could say I like to test the limits of photography and explore different genres. I find enjoyment in shooting portraits, astro, macro, high speed flash, motorsports and landscape. At the moment it seems to be darker, moody and emotive work that allows me to express myself artistically.

What would you say is your personal favourite shot and why?

I love such a diverse range of photography that it is hard to choose one. However, my personal favourite is a photo of my mother that

I took for a Canon photography competition about 10 years ago. The brief was bubble gum and I asked Mum over to take some photos. She asked what she needed to bring over with her, I said “just your teeth!”

I had my home studio set up, when she arrived. I sat her down on a seat and asked for her teeth. I was chewing the gum at the time. She was a bit of a card, so she pulled them out, I blew a bubble, stuck it in the teeth and gave it back to her. The look on her face was priceless. Everytime I look at that image it reminds me of her character, her sense of willingness to have a go at anything, but more so the love and trust that she had in me. That’s what makes a great image and I think that every photographer’s best image is one that has a personal emotion attached to it, taking them back to that moment in time.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced so far in your photography career and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenge for me was the change from film to digital. Film developing was processed at a Lab where your negatives and prints would be checked, colour and density corrected and printed as a final image. When I changed over to digital photography I had to

learn new processes, quality in pixels rather than film, develop better computer skills, transfer files without losing image quality, photographic programs and how to process the digital files myself. I had to learn Photoshop and Lightroom to be able to get the results I wanted as printing became automated and social media exploded. What would you describe as your dream shoot?

I have long dreamt of travelling to Antarctica for a photo shoot. The frozen landscape, wildlife and colours fascinate me. With a love for travel, nature and experiencing new things this destination is somewhere I would like to experience for myself and see what kinds of images I could produce. Returning home I would have images and an adventure to remember and relive every time I looked at the photos. You live and breathe photography and not only do you spend your time behind the lens, you also teach others. What aspects of photography do you teach?

I have been teaching photography for the past 12 years, focusing on small classes running over 4 weeks. Students learn all about the fundamentals of photography, light, exposure and how to use the features of their cameras. They learn all about how to control the camera and understand why they change things like shutter speeds and aperture to achieve the photographs they desire. But

taking the photograph is only one part of their photographic journey, so I run an editing course for beginners in Lightroom Classic, so that they can learn to process their images to their full potential. I also do a lot of one-on-one lessons with people in the field or in their home teaching them exactly what it is they need to know to improve their photography, how to use new equipment or to solve a problem they are having. What do you get personally out of teaching others?

learn all about how to control the camera and understand why they change things like shutter speeds and aperture to achieve the photographs they desire.

I watch camera reviews and learn new techniques in photography and editing. Photography is my passion. What is on the horizon for you as we head into 2023?

I am just about to rebrand my business to “Fundamental Photography” to reflect my vision of teaching the fundamentals of photography and bringing the fun back into it. I will be holding Photography and Lightroom classes along with the Sunset Landscape courses again, when the weather clears up.

I love it when people get as excited about photography as I do. They come in with their cameras that they have only been shooting in program mode for years, and leave with the knowledge and understanding of photography so they can take better photographs. I love it when students come back to show me their work or to thank me for making it so easy to learn and develop their love of photography. As I always tell my students, take photographs not snapshots!

Away from the camera where would we find you spending your down time?

I love spending time with my family, and walking the dog on the beach.

Also some new classes on off camera flash, astro photography and some fun things like steel wool and light painting

In addition to this, I am teaching at Camp Creative this year, which I’m really excited about. In the coming year, I also am looking at starting a passion project for War Veterans using photography as therapy which will incorporate digital storytelling, excursions and photobooks. For those willing to learn, what's the best way to get in contact with you?

I AM CODY

AGGIE HAT

Aggie Hat is a writer who has shared a very beautiful and personal story in her book - I Am Cody. The book explores Cody and her mother’s experience of gender diversity and the importance of being true to who we are.

Hi Aggie. You have recently released your book ‘I Am Cody’, is this your first book? How has it been to see it published?

This is my first book that has been published and I am thrilled to see it out in the public space. As Cody’s greatgrandmother says, “when we know better, we should do better” and this story enables people of all ages to better understand gender diversity. I Am Cody shares a special message, can you tell us about why you decided to write this book?

This story of us, Cody’s story, is a true story. She has been my creative muse for as long as she has been alive. On the day she explicitly shared her story with me, in the comfortable nest of pillows, my whole perspective changed. I have always believed in children having a voice and being much more than passive ‘adults in training’ but this experience elevated that understanding to a whole new level. She was so articulate and patient with me. Cody had tried many times before to explain her gender to me but I was stuck in my adult brain that has been trained to social norms. I knew then and there this was a special story that needed to be told so more and more people understand our children, understand more what they are given credit for and really can teach us so much. What was the process like for you from having the idea to writing the story and through to having the finished copy?

It was a very exciting time for me. I love writing and write creatively nearly every day. Cody’s life has been documented by many poems, stories and anecdotes. This particular story came to me quickly and flowed easily. After working with Crystal on the images for the book, the book was compiled, and I eagerly waited for the first box to arrive. It was an emotional and exciting moment looking through the first copy and a moment Crystal and I will never forget. We had forged a friendship through this process that took me by surprise. Given this story was a personal and important story, we really got to know each other well and I think that comes through in the book. The illustrations are so beautiful, how did you decide on the type of look you wanted

for the book?

Once I had written the story, I knew the type of illustrations I wanted and the many different layers of meaning through the images. I am not a visual artist so I needed to find someone with the level of skill and compassion this story deserved. It took a little while to find an artist to work with and when I first met with Crystal it became very clear we made a great team. We worked collaboratively so well, and she was brilliant in being able to bring the story back to life. It was more than bringing words to life, she captured the emotion and mood in each scene so beautifully. This was my favourite part of the process – talking about the nuances of detail and watching Cody emerge on paper. It must have been quite an experience sharing a story like this, what has the response been like from readers, and also family and friends?

I am so grateful and appreciative of the reception “I am Cody” has received. When the story was released it was during the campaign lead up to the election and gender diversity was being used as a political football. It was a very difficult period of time for me to witness but I was also witness to the outpouring of love, support, and acceptance from friends, family and the community members who loved the book. I gifted a copy of this book to some of our local schools and one student who read it burst into tears and said, “I wish my mum reacted like this”. This story is special to me and Cody, but also to a whole generation of children whose existence is currently being debated and adults whose existence has been denied for a long

time.

What do you hope people get from having this book available to them?

I hope this book brings about the opportunity for discussion, understanding and compassion. At the end of the day, we are all human, we are all in this together, and we all deserve acceptance, love and respect. This is obviously a topic that is close to your heart, do you plan on writing more on this topic?

It is a topic very close to my heart and I have more projects in the pipeline. Cody started school this year which has been a new experience for both of us and shed light on some issues that I had previously taken for granted. The second “I am Cody” book has been written and will be published as well. In the meantime, I continue to write blog posts that discuss and reflect on different situations we encounter bestofthinkers.com/blog I am also undertaking research in this area and look forward to being able to share that once it has been completed.

Where can readers find the book or more information?

There are more and more resources becoming available and I include a resources tab next to my blog. I recommend looking at Transhub transhub.org.au, the TransVitality toolkit transhub.org.au/vitality, and Pride in diversity prideinclusionprograms.com.au. To purchase a copy of “I am Cody”, please visit Inhouse Publishing inhousebookstore.com.au or it is available as an ebook on Kindle as well. Thanks Aggie.

IN BUSINESS WOMEN

SARGENT JULES

Can you tell us a little bit about your business?

I offer both Counselling and Remedial Massage Therapies from my studio in Sawtell.

I’ve been working one on one with people for 20 years and have come to realise that the link between the mind and the body is fundamental to who we are as living beings - there is no separation and nothing more important. You cannot treat a condition in one without paying attention to the other. That understanding, which has evolved over time, inspired me to train in both forms of therapy and combine the two. The talk and touch sessions I offer, (although I also offer both separately if you wish) addresses this connection and focuses on the support of both. What’s your favourite part of the work you do?

Being in contact with people; getting to meet so many humans and getting to be a part of their evolution, whether that be a physical or emotional healing. It is an absolute privilege and joy to be a part of that process. Who is your greatest influence in business? I don’t think I would single out any one

person. I have huge respect and admiration for anyone that trusts in themselves enough to start their own business, take the risks and believe that they can make a difference. Have you always lived on the Coffs Coast?

I moved up here about 5 months ago with my family from Sydney. We came through Sawtell on holiday a few years ago. I went for a walk over Bonville Headland, it was blowing a gale but I didn’t care. I stood and took it all in; the ocean, the endless expanse of beach, the rainforest and I just knew, I knew I wanted to live here. Everything that followed that experience reaffirmed that we should be here. The community spirit, the sheer space, the pace of life. Everything is perfect for us and this is where we want to raise our little boy. This place offers us everything we want for him… and ourselves. I just love it here. What piece of advice would you give

women making their way in the business world?

There are no better multitaskers on the planet, no-one more empathic, strong and capable. Trust in what you do, trust you will make a difference and that what you do matters.

Trust yourself - you have so much to offer, so much intuition in you and so much capability. I am constantly in awe of what women - what we - achieve. There are no better multitaskers on the planet, no-one more empathic, strong and capable. Trust in what you do, trust you will make a difference and that what you do matters. If you can do that you will find the determination and energy to keep driving forwards, tackling the obstacles that come your way, and you will succeed.

Where can people find out more about your business?

My studio is in Sawtell. All my contact details and information about the services I offer are found on my website www.julessargent.com If you are in need of any kind of support, be it physical or emotional, and you feel I can help, I’d love to meet you.

SAPPHIRE STUDIO

Sapphire Studio came about as I saw a gap in the offerings we had access to on the Coffs Coast. Being a mother myself, I know how incredible and resilient our bodies are – but sometimes we need a little extra help to recover, reach our goal weight, feel like ourselves again or just gain a bit of confidence that makes all the difference in the world. We offer three incredibly innovative treatments that not only help build muscle and reduce fat on a physical level, but also restore strength, heal injuries and rejuvenate your body on a cellular level.

Emsculpt is the first FDA-cleared energy device approved to burn fat and build muscle mass! It contracts muscles beyond what is possible through voluntary effort, meaning it not only implodes fat cells (for a 19% loss after four treatments), but also simultaneously builds muscle fibres (by roughly 16%) for more defined abs and rounder rear-ends. Celebrities including JLo, Britney Spears, Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian all publicly use and swear by Emsculpt!

Our Emsella Chair treatment is a high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM)

technology for the treatment of pelvic floor related disorders. It induces deep pelvic floor muscle contractions designed to deliver the equivalent of 11,200 Kegel exercises over 28 minutes!

It’s an amazing treatment for incontinence, sexual dysfunction, pain during intercourse, prolapse, and post-pregnancy pelvic issues. Our Total Xen Full Body treatment is low-level laser light therapy, utilising LED or lasers to improve recovery and accelerate wound healing. It helps improve cellular function that assists the body in its natural healing and recovery process. Total XEN is an effective treatment for those wanting to reduce inflammation, decrease post exercise soreness and recover from injury faster (among other benefits).

Our treatments are all FDA approved, clinically studied and require extensive training to perform. They are completely noninvasive and proven to be effective based on studies and years of industry use. I would love to talk to anyone interested in benefiting from these state-of-the-art treatments. Everyone is welcome at Sapphire Studio!

KANE GOIS

Kane Gois is a personal trainer who started out in the fitness industry after his own experience of taking his life back after struggling with his weight and mental health. He is now paying that forward by not only coaching people on a physical level but mentoring others, including youth from local high schools, on personal growth and confidence too.

Hi Kane. Can you tell us about how you came to be in the fitness industry?

I had spent most of my adult life in Banking and Finance. When we (my wife Peta and our 2 kids) moved to Macksville from Melbourne in 2016, I went through my battle with depression and I realised I had to make changes. Fitness was something that always appeased me, after I lost about 30-40kgs when we moved. With the weight loss and my mental battles I wanted to try and share my journey. What do you enjoy about it and what made you decide to open your own space?

The biggest joy I get is showing people that everyday doesn’t have to be perfect, but every day they show up, even for 5 minutes is a win. Seeing others building both mental and physical strength is humbling.

I was working at my home gym just before the floods, and I had a large group of clients. However, after the floods we lost a lot and we wanted to make a change and decided to use what we had saved to set up our space. During

my fitness journey I shared my battle with depression, anxiety and weight and I found so many others had similar stories to mine. Often, they would speak with people who have always had fitness, where I enjoyed showing them that it’s possible to get to their goals, as hard as they might be.

You have been through your own struggles with mental health, and sharing your story and helping others with theirs has become a focus of yours. When did you start to realise the impact you could have on local youth particularly in sharing your experiences?

For the longest time I was ashamed of my battle with mental health and often I would avoid the topic. I would keep quiet and I soon realised that my battle and attempted suicides weren’t a sign of weakness.

I started to find my voice and continue to share my story when we opened our space. My wife Peta encouraged me to speak more and I found a lot of men in the area had similar battles and often sat in silence. When I shared my story it empowered many of them to do the same. I started working with youth through Becoming

U, and having ADHD, I was able to connect with many of these young men. What I found was often you had amazing boys/girls who were just misunderstood or unable to express themselves. Often, I found these kids needed help understanding their emotions.

I provided them a safe space and many would open up or feel safe enough to share their stories with me, and build bonds for them to feel they could walk in anytime and someone would be at the gym to listen.

Can you tell us about your involvement with some local programs like the Becoming U project?

I work with groups of young men and women, showing them how health can be used to better manage their mental and physical health. Becoming U has become the catalyst for our involvement in a few local youth programs such as Bellingen Youth Shire and Lifetime Connect. The space is about allowing everyone to feel comfortable. So Becoming U and Bellingen focused on youth.

However, along with my staff such as Mel, we have been able to work with Lifetime Connect

70 COFFS COAST focus

helping victims of DV. This has been one of our new focuses as often these women don’t have a safe space to feel welcomed. So we allow them access to the facility and we look at times with lower foot traffic so they aren’t overwhelmed. They also get time to themselves which allows them to rebuild themselves. What do you get out of being involved? What have you learnt about yourself?

My biggest reward is seeing these groups I work with grow, both mentally and physically. Seeing so many of these young men and women stepping outside of their comfort zones using fitness to help them better manage their day to day activities. For me I’ve learned that my job may be fitness, but my vocation is helping others.

I enjoy being a mentor to so many of them and helping them see that they may not fit the box that is school, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be successful in life.

What do you hope the kids involved get out of being a part of your programs?

I hope the kids are able to better manage

themselves and use fitness to help them. Rather than, like most adults, it becomes a chore and they hate trying to be fit.

I also hope they all can see that even when you have bad days, if you show up and do something it’s a great win. They also gain an everlasting mentor, as I hope they feel they can always come back and they’re welcomed back whenever they need.

You arranged a fundraiser to help victims of flooding earlier this year, can you tell us about it?

After the recent floods in Lismore, my wife and the team believed we couldn’t just stand back and do nothing. So, with the help of a local - MJ Taylor, we spoke with local businesses and started the fundraiser.

We had to figure out how to draw the crowd and we thought the best way was to see the coach suffer. Hence my best friend Amanda and I completed 5 hours of straight burpees to give people something to come watch while they donated. We had no idea how much the community would get behind us, and we were blown away when we raised over $8,000. All the funds were given directly to families in Lismore who had suffered major losses. All up we were

able to help 5 families and 1 small business. You have created quite a tight knit community at Connective Fitness, what do you offer there that you feel creates that environment?

Connective Fitness is similar to most fitness centres when you think about classes and Personal Training. However, for us our point of difference comes back to the people, not just the staff but also the members. We have been able to create a collective of people who all have different stories, and the space we have allows them to share it. For me, I share my journey through depression and show others that they are allowed to not feel ok, and our space is safe for them to have those days. With my team, they all share journeys, sometimes it’s about fitness, other times it’s about their mental health or battles. Sharing their loads often lightens them for someone else.

What are some of your plans or hopes for yourself and Connective Fitness heading into the future?

That’s a loaded question, but I guess I want to do what I can to keep supporting our community for as long as I can. Growth for our business would be a bigger space, and maybe being involved in more programs to support the wider community of the valley.

THE GIFT OF SHARING AT CHRISTMAS

Many people look forward to Christmas; it can be joyful and full of happiness, and many people say it is the most beautiful time of the year, but that is not so for everyone. The sharing of food, fun, and festivities with family and friends is the media message we see at this time of year. However, this is not the reality for some families. In Australia, 47% (Australian Institute of Family Studies) of separations and divorces involve children under 18 years.

Christmas time can exacerbate feelings of fear and anxiety for separated families. Some separated families with complicated relationships have led to estrangement, where some family members have no contact. When relationships break down, tensions often arise with shared parenting arrangements.

Communication regarding Christmas arrangements is fraught with emotion. Focusing on cooperation and the importance of compromise, flexibility, and effective communication will prevent disputes and arguments. Getting to this stage may take a while after separation.

If your relationship has broken down and you can no longer communicate face to face without arguing or getting emotional, it might be more favourable to correspond through email. Ultimately you could use an impartial professional such as a mediator who can help you communicate with each other.

At Christmas, conversations around sharing time with the children are challenging. You may both have the same ideas for the festive season, and any compromise may leave you feeling disappointed. Talking about sharing time with your children may cause high emotional responses, making calm, rational communication difficult. Start your Christmas discussions as early as possible, even a year in advance. When discussing Christmas arrangements, do consider how you will provide opportunities for your children to join in celebrations with their extended family. Having early conversations will enable you to have clear, relaxed, and open-tocompromise communication.

A common worry for separated parents is that Christmas after a breakup will no longer be perfect. It helps to reset your expectations of Christmas. Try not to overcomplicate things; some things you have to let go of, yes it may not look the same, but you are creating new traditions and ways to celebrate. Your children are the central part of Christmas, making it memorable for them is what is essential.

To create a sense of ease with the new celebration traditions at Christmas time, we need to consider what worries children may have. Often young children worry about whether Santa Claus knows where to deliver their presents. Reassure them in an ageappropriate way about these kinds of details. Older children may have ideas about whom they want to spend Christmas with, so listen to them, and find a solution that works for all.

COUNSELLING CONVERSATIONS

Once you have agreed on a plan, work together to make it as successful as you can for your children. Talk positively to the children about sharing time at both houses. Adhere to the times you have decided upon and try to make transitions between homes as happily as possible, even if you feel sad about the changes. Christmas after separation can be challenging. It is all right not to feel all right. Make yourself a plan to take your mind off things. Make time for yourself to feel sad, and cry if you need to. Visit friends and family, go for a walk, and curl up with a good book and a nice cup of tea. Or do something completely different than you usually would, such as volunteering in a care facility to visit an older person or homeless shelter to give back to others.

Remember, if things do not go as expected this year, you might have new ideas to make things better next year. Learn to forgive yourself; you have done your best. You may not have all the correct answers straight away; each year is a learning opportunity. Gradually you will work out what is the right fit for your family.

I wish you all the best in your unified communications over the Christmas season.

O’ C O N N O R

SAM O’CONNOR

Sam O’Connor retrained as a Beauty Therapist about 8 years ago and making clients feel amazing is her passion and her special talent! When she is on the job she is giving her all to her clients and her studio Poppy & Rose Beauty Co. is thriving because of it.

Hi Sam. When did you do your training as a beauty therapist and why did you decide this was the career for you?

I kind of fell into Beauty Therapy about 8 years ago. My 2 boys were at school and my 3rd baby had just turned one, and after doing Family Day Care for so many years, I needed a big change. I had always been interested in doing nails, and enrolled to train as a Nail tech in 2014. Whilst doing the course, I had a few units that crossed over with Beauty and became so intrigued by it all. I then went on and completed my Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The thing that gets me up and into work everyday are my clients and the way they feel when they leave the studio. We provide a safe space of solitude and comfort here in the studio, whether it’s a 15 minute eyebrow wax, or a 90 minute massage, each and every one of them leave feeling better than when they arrived. We’ve become such a busy society that we forget to take those

little snippets to relax, and just stop. You run your beauty studio Poppy & Rose Beauty Co. in Bellingen, what sort of services do you offer there and do you have a favourite treatment or service to do?

Our most popular services would be waxing, tinting, and pedicures. We also do spray tans, acrylic nails, manicures, massage and facials. My favourite treatment to perform would have to be a relaxation massage. Having someone come into the room full of stress, and leaving in a total state of bliss is a great feeling. We also have the services of two very talented ladies who work from the studio, Shaniese, offering cosmetic injectables and Daisy, cosmetic tattooing. What is one of the weirdest or funniest experiences you have had as a beauty therapist?

Oh well, all the good stories I have to keep to myself, client confidentiality! The thing that makes me giggle the most is when someone is having a facial and they slowly start dozing off and then scare themselves with a loud roaring snore. Or seeing a child’s reaction to their mum’s new eyebrows after tinting, one

child burst into tears!

The beauty industry is always evolving, how do you stay up to date and how do you decide what services or products to take on in your studio?

We mainly keep up to date through our product suppliers, also with training courses and other local people in the industry. Social media is also such a big tool in keeping up with what’s hot and what’s not. If and when we do start to offer a new treatment, it is usually based around what our clients’ needs and wants are. They are our number one focus, so it doesn’t make sense to offer services that they are not interested in, or won’t benefit from.

What seems to be the most popular or up-and-coming treatments currently?

Our most popular treatments are waxing, by far. Coming into Summer everyone wants to be smooth and hair free.

What is the most challenging thing about running a beauty business?

Definitely the juggle! Finding time to be on the floor enough to fit all my clients in, as well as doing the behind the scenes work, I could use a clone or two!

What are your plans or hopes for the future of your business?

At this stage, I’m pretty happy with where the business is. My books are almost closed, I have an apprentice who is amazing and flying through her training, I’m working alongside Daisy and Shaniese to extend our range of services, and I have the best bunch of clients you could ask for. After a turbulent 2021, I’m really just basking in the glow of coming out the other side.

What have been your achievements so far?

In the past two years I have qualified and attended the Australian Age Championships, the national swimming meet. I am proud of this achievement as only started training with a coach in 2019. In April 2020, I qualified and swam at the Australian Age Championships at the Gold Coast 100m freestyle. In Dec 2021, I moved to North Coast Swim Academy with coaches Dean Lawrence and Daniel Bannerman. have increased the number of both swimming and land based (gym) training sessions. My swimming is getting faster and stronger. I swam at the Australian Age Championships in Adelaide in 2021 qualifying for both the 50m and 100m freestyle. I was seeded 61 however, ranked 31st after the race. This year have been selected by NSW Swimming for their Performance Pathway Program: NSW Regional Development Program for identified talented regional swimmers. I am excited to be attending the Development Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra from 27-30 September 2022. I have nearly been with Dan and Dean for a year, and look forward to some good results in the upcoming 2022/23 Swim season.

Why did you apply for this grant?

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

My short term goals are to make the top 10 in the finals at the Australian Age Championships 2023. Male swimmers peak at age 2223 so my longer term goals are to see how much I can improve in the next 5 years. I am excited for my future as I am only at th beginning of my swimming career, so I will continue to focus on my effort and giving it 100%.

My two older brothers, Luke (23) and Angus (21), are great role models. They are both very diligent and dedicated to their selected crafts. They encourage me too to pursue my dreams and passions and inspire me to work hard to achieve this. respect and admire

TEACHING HUB SOLUTION

EDUCATION UPDATE

Education has been featured in the Australian media recently as part of the great skills shortage debate. In August, Australia’s Education Ministers met with a selection of teachers, school leaders, and other education experts from a variety of sectors at Parliament House to prioritise actions to address the issue of teacher demand, supply and retention. A variety of strategies were discussed from fasttracking teaching degrees to accelerating visa approval processes for international teachers. While it is recognised that a multitude of solutions will be required to support the teacher supply shortfall, I believe more attention should be paid to the domestic education market and to the training process itself.

Many regions around Australia are developing an industry model that has been a key training philosophy for hundreds of yearsthe Master-Apprentice Model. Traditionally used for teaching practical trades, modern apprenticeship models now range from craft to high status in professional practices such as engineering, law, accounting, architecture, and management consulting. The Clinical Model is not too dissimilar to the MasterApprentice Model and provides structured student nursing opportunities and experiences

with professional registered nurses. In some states, the graduate nurse is also partnered with a registered nurse for orientation and induction processes.

In education theory, these methods of on-thejob learning are defined as Situated Learning Theory. Some innovative school districts, clusters of schools and associations have started to utilise this theory to adapt Clinical or Master-Apprentice Models to their own specific needs. On the North Coast of NSW, Bishop Druitt College with the leadership of the Association of Independent Schools NSW and a small group of lead schools, together with a local university have developed a threeyear trial pilot program called the North Coast Teaching Hub to address the teacher shortage in the region. This exciting initiative gathers together two experienced teachers (Mentor Teachers), two student teachers (Trainee Teachers), and a school hub leader per school to create a structure to build teacher skills that will equip and support our next generations of teachers. The model also aims to employ the Trainee Teacher as a Teaching Assistant throughout the process. One of the limitations of the current process is the financial sacrifice of studying and this model is one of the first to address this real life issue. The mentoring experiences, tertiary study, real-life Teacher Assistant experiences and hub support model

are all purposefully designed to establish an atmosphere and a set of experiences that will equip the Trainee Teachers to seamlessly enter the profession.

The North Coast Teaching Hub is also aiming at retaining local talent in our community without losing them to the larger urban centres. Trainee Teachers can also remain connected to their social and family structures. The professional growth of the Mentor Teachers is another expected benefit of this pilot program and could see classroom teachers build a portfolio of evidence that can support their own application for Lead or Highly Accomplished Teachers, which is a nationally recognised evidence-based promotion in teacher accreditation. Another benefit of this model is to connect tertiary educators and researchers directly to schools.

Principals of the selected schools can see benefit in this process by giving university lecturers and researchers regular access to the everyday processes of the teaching profession and to create action research opportunities with the host schools.

ZARA TEMESI

Zara Temesi has recently been overseas to compete in the World Championships in both Modern Pentathlon and Laser Run, and she has returned with the World Champion title for Laser Run and placed in the top 15 for Modern Pentathlon. What an achievement!

Hi Zara. When did you first discover the world of Pentathlon?

I first discovered Pentathlon when I was younger from the introduction by my parents. I began travelling with the Australian Modern Pentathlon team at a young age but never competed. It was the following years where I began to train and understand the enjoyment of this sport.

Can you describe the sport for those that haven’t heard of it?

Modern Pentathlon is a very challenging sport that comprises 5 different individual events; these consist of running, laser shooting, fencing, showjumping and swimming. With Modern Pentathlon it’s important to know that it isn’t just one factor that you have to work hard on but all 5 individual events.

What do you enjoy most about competing?

When I’m at a competition, what I

enjoy the most is the environments that you are surrounded by. These include the competitiveness, the friendships you create and the accomplishments that come towards the end.

Can you tell us about some of the competitions you have been involved in recently?

The most recent competitions that I have been involved in were the Laser Run World Championships and the Junior Modern Pentathlon World Championships. The Laser Run World Champs consisted of the running and laser shooting components of Modern Pentathlon and was a 5 x 600m running distance. I followed this competition with

the World Championships in Poland that included all 5 sports of Modern Pentathlon. During this comp I was involved in the women's relay and the individual. What are some of the results from those comps that you’re most proud of?

relay and the individual final. As a whole, these two were

I was able to leave the Laser Run World Champs with a gold medal in the junior category and after I began the junior to Poland and compete in the Modern Pentathlon World Championships. This competition has a qualification, semi final and final which I was relieved enough to reach finishing in the top 15. In this competition I was lucky enough to be able to compete in the Equestrian event in both the relay and the individual final. As a whole, these two

comps were my most successful having myself leave with a World Champion Title. You have travelled quite a bit recently, what has it been like being part of events that bring athletes from all over the world?

Travelling is a great honour and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to compete with such elite athletes around the world. Travelling has built within me a greater respect towards people doing this sport and expresses this shared appreciation and understanding towards each other. What have you taken away or learnt from the experiences of those big events? Modern Pentathlon has taught me a lot of life lessons such as

responsibility, discipline and determination. It has also highlighted the importance of a supportive team that surrounds you. It has taught me many things in my life and continues to teach me new lessons.

How often are you currently training and what sort of training have you been doing most?

I currently am training 6 times a week with some days doing more than 1 sport. This creates more strength and endurance towards competition like situations where you are being worked hard over consecutive days. Training wise, Modern Pentathlon is difficult to schedule and requires a lot of

time within your days to benefit from and allow yourself to be as prepared as possible for competitions. What are some of your goals for the future in the sport?

The future of the sport is beginning to change rapidly and has influenced my concept of future goals. As a result of the Equestrian component leaving the sport it has created a major shift in the views of a pentathletes future, making it difficult to set straight goals. In the future I hope to continue to meet new people who share the same enjoyment in the sport as I do, and achieve new experiences within competitions. I hope to continue in the path that I have and aim to reach more titles within the sport. Thanks Zara.

BRYCE Alisa

Alisa Bryce is a Soil Scientist who wandered into the field and now has a passion for the stuff! She has recently published her book ‘Grounded’ which explores the world of soil. Many of us may not have considered soil to be such an engaging topic but each chapter covers a new subject that may just surprise you...

Hi Alisa. You’re a Soil Scientist with a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Sydney and a Masters from the University of Cambridge, can you tell us about why you decided to study and work in this field and what you love about it?

I did not plan on becoming a Soil Scientist – I didn’t even know it was a career option when I left school. My natural talents lie more in the creative sphere – music and writing –so my parents were quite astonished when I chose to study Agriculture. I think I chose it because I liked being outdoors and didn’t want a career in music. The decisions we make when we’re 17….

First year was general science and I hated it, but in second year we had soil subjects and they quickly became my favourite. I struggled with high school science but when the concepts were applied to soil they made more sense. I particularly enjoy its paradoxes. It is ubiquitous but ignored, abiotic and biotic, living and dead. It is one of Earth’s

oldest resources but one of the younger sciences. It’s dirty, but an expensive beauty treatment. We are utterly dependent on it but take great pains to banish it from our lives.

Can you give us an example of the kind of work you have done in your career so far?

I’ve dug an awful lot of holes!

Although my degree was in Agricultural Science, I worked as an Urban Soil Scientist. The principles are the same – working with the soil to make plants grow better. I have assessed the soil on almost every sports field in Sydney, including some of the big stadiums, designed soil for green roofs and tree pits, visited many poisoned trees and some ‘poisonings’ that ended up being poor water management killing the trees, worked on many

construction projects and fixing soil so it can be reused in garden beds. I’ve also taught at TAFE and these days do quite a bit of science writing and translating research into plain English. This is usually agricultural.

You have recently published your book ‘Grounded’, can you give us a little rundown of what it’s about?

Grounded explores just some of the ways that soil is part of our lives, beyond gardening and agriculture. Such as how forensic scientists use the soil to catch criminals, how the soil might affect your escape tunnel plans (if the need ever arises), how the soil could hold the next wonderdrug, if quicksand is real, and if soil really affects the taste of wine.

The book is like a tasting plate – each of the 12 chapters is a sample of a different topic.

84 COFFS COAST focus
Grounded explores just some of the ways that soil is part of our lives, beyond gardening and agriculture. Such as how forensic scientists use the soil to catch criminals...

Why did you decide to write this book and what’s the idea behind it all?

There were a few reasons. Mostly I wanted to make soil relatable and to give readers a chance to engage with a topic they might not otherwise give a second thought. Most books about soil are about agriculture, gardening or environmental degradation which are very important topics, but what was missing was a book that lets readers just sit back and enjoy the wonderful world of soil.

Plus, there were two writing-related incidents. First, a publisher told me no-one would publish a book about soil because it was too boring. Second, I was doing a creative non-fiction writing course and when I said I wanted to write about soil the teacher said there was already a book on soil so no need. As if one book was enough. What is your favourite chapter from the book and why?

The Crime chapter is my favourite. I love mysteries and detective stories so the crime chapter was the first one I wrote. I spent half a day with Forensic Soil Scientist Rob Fitzpatrick, hearing about the cases he had been involved with, the criminals they helped catch, and other amazing stories like helping to recover stolen dinosaur eggs. I could write an entire book just about forensic soil

science.

Who is this book written for? Do you need to have any prior knowledge of the subject to enjoy the book?

Grounded is written for anyone even a little bit curious about this gritty stuff that blankets the earth. You don’t need any prior soil knowledge; you don’t need to have an interest in gardening, and you don’t need to be an environmentalist. You just need to be curious and ready to hear some great stories about soil in war, crime, wine making, cemeteries, health, beauty and more.

The book is written for adults but I’ve had some high school librarians comment it’s regularly borrowed. What sort of feedback have you had on

the book so far?

It’s all been positive, which is lovely.

What I wasn’t expecting was that the two chapters I thought would be too boring to include (sports fields and geophagy) are the chapters people pick out as the most interesting. Where can people find the book?

The Book Warehouse in Coffs (support your local independent bookstore!). Otherwise you can get it online from Booktopia and other major retailers. I’ve heard a rumour it was in some airport bookshelves but have no idea which ones. I'm also selling signed copies on my website. www.alisabryce.com.au People can leave a personalised message and I'll write it in the book and sign it for them. What’s next?

I’d love to make Grounded into a documentary so I’m working out how that could happen. I’m also working on a soil book for early high school and some kids books with soil as a theme. And there is some fiction on the way too…featuring a forensic soil scientist of course. Thanks Alisa.

Sometimes the nearest

so far away. Just ask Southern Cross University PhD graduand and soon-to-be Dr Scott Goddard.

During his days as a greenkeeper at Coffs Harbour Golf Club, Scott would pass the University Campus on the other side of Hogbin Drive and wonder how he might change from one kind of course to another.

The answer came via the Preparing for Success Program (PSP), which makes university study possible for people seeking a career change or those who may not have graduated high school. It set Scott on a pathway of study and research success.

Through the PSP and his subsequent studies, Scott's passion for sport aligned with a burgeoning interest in psychology. Alongside peers such as Associate Professor Christian Swann and Dr Chris Stevens, Scott learned, contributed and thrived as part of a cohort of researchers doing highly reputed work around sport and mental health.

Growing up beside the ocean at Scotts

Head on the NSW mid-coast, Scott attended Macksville High School – alma mater of rugby league great Greg Inglis and the late Test cricketer Phillip Hughes. His own sporting prowess lay with soccer, and he was promising enough to undertake trials in Germany.

"It didn't work out for me, which was obviously disappointing from the perspective of my aspirations as an athlete. However, more concerning was what I was actually going to do with my life," he says.

"I knew I wanted to be involved in sport in some way, so I undertook a greenkeeping apprenticeship between 2010 and 2014. Working at the golf club, I would see the University just

up the road and the thought of education gradually built in me. Towards the end of my apprenticeship, I was giving sincere consideration to study without really knowing how to go about it.

"The PSP was ideal. It provided clear information about my study options and obligations. I felt motivated and supported. I started my Bachelor of Psychological Science degree in 2015 and graduated in 2017, then did Honours in 2018."

For his PhD, Scott investigated one of the more intriguing aspects of sporting performance – flow states – which refers to when a person becomes fully immersed in an activity, or ‘in the zone’. In a sporting context,

things can seem

time seems to fall away, performance feels effortless and one's abilities and instincts are at their peak.

Think of basketballer Michael Jordan in his heyday, tennis great Roger Federer, runner Cathy Freeman and swimmer Michael Phelps. At their best, every performance was a masterclass in flow. Unsurprisingly, many sports around the world are keen to know more.

"It is an amazing psychological state and I am interested in seeing if a flow can be reliably induced on demand," says Scott. "It is considered the Holy Grail for sports psychologists and athletes due to its association with positive subjective experiences and exceptional performances. This is reflected by the large amount of research on flow. The problem is that flow states remain very rare and elusive, and that’s why finding strategies to reliably produce these experiences is so important."

Scott's PhD project monitored runners on

treadmills in a laboratory setting. Importantly, pressures and stresses that can come with competition or specific goal-setting were removed. The research included a systematic review of previous attempts to induce flow, interviews with runners about their flow states and perspectives on potential intervention strategies, before developing and evaluating a flow intervention across a pilot study and then a larger trial.

"For the intervention, I covered the digitaI displays on the treadmills, so there were no readouts of speed, distance or other performance indicators," says Scott. "At various times during the run I would relay positive feedback about their performance, but otherwise, the runners had no information other than how they were feeling.

"Focusing on flow states opens up questions about how to approach different events, thinking about what you are trying to achieve, and being able to perform positively

without experiencing unnecessary pressures or feeling let down by any perceived failure.

"Instead, you should set more open-ended goals and approach events with a sense of exploration rather than setting specific goals and ramping up the pressure. This can help athletes enjoy the experience more, while being able to perform at their best. This can also have a positive impact on your well-being, confidence and consistency as an athlete."

Since finishing his PhD, Scott has remained involved with the University, including work as a research assistant. His journey with Southern Cross University is also a great example for others pondering a return to study.

The question is, has Scott’s flow state research helped with his own sporting endeavours? He still plays soccer, turning out for Coffs City United Football Club.

"As I'm getting older, I find myself being moved away from centre-midfield [offence/ playmaker] and spending more time at centreback [defence]. Maybe I need to activate my own flow state to find my way up the field again."

ADVANCED MOTORING CLUB

The Advanced Motoring Club started out small with values of mateship, inclusivity and helping each other out, and it has grown into a club with over 500 members that stands by its values and supports numerous charities and members of the community.

Hi Craig. How long have you been involved with the Advanced Motoring Club and how did you come to be involved?

In April 2016, Stewart Copeland came and spoke to me about an idea to start a local motoring club that catered for all kinds of cars and valued the importance of the sensible motoring enthusiast. Stewart wanted a club that did not function on the politics, ‘backstabbing’ and ‘one-upmanship’ that exists in so many clubs and organizations … and shouldn’t be …. and a club that embraces the Aussie values of mateship and helping each other.

We both agreed that that is what we wanted and the rest is history. Can you tell us a bit about the Club and what you do?

The Club has grown from strength to strength and we are very proud of what we have achieved. We enjoy each other’s company as motoring enthusiasts and mates but also, there have been many charities and causes that AMC has supported with donations of money or goods since its’ inception and the list is now pretty impressive.

The Club now has over 500 financial members and continues to grow. We welcome all sensible motoring enthusiasts who embrace the values that we hold dear. Interested people can speak to Craig Markwort at Advanced Mechanical Services Unit 6/163 Orlando St, Coffs Harbour.

You get together quite regularly. Can you tell us about what you get up to when you meet up?

Stewart works part-time for Shannons Classic Car Insurance and is at the forefront of organizing and supporting motoring events in the local area.

He supports many organizations and charities and actively promotes the Club too. Stewart publishes a monthly calendar of events that can be accessed via our club Facebook page, or a calendar can be emailed out and the monthly itinerary will be published on our

Club webpage. We meet at shows, car and coffee gatherings, go on cruises, even have a monthly catchup dinner.

What are some examples of the sort of cars your members have?

We have a huge range of special vehicles in the club from Aussie muscle cars like Holden Monaros and Ford GT’s through to American, British, Japanese and European prized possessions from Pontiacs to Jaguars, Datsuns, BMW’s and so on.

What are some of the stand out cars on show?

We have a large number of very prized and cherished machines within the Club. Some are multi-award winning restorations, whilst others are in completely original condition and known as a ‘survivor’ in the motoring fraternity.

You also support charities with the AMC, tell us about some of the ones you have helped in the past and how?

Hopefully, there’s many more to come. I think AMC is making a big difference, and enjoying themselves in the process. It is important to me that we are not just a bunch of revheads, but are positive advocates for social change in the

society that we live in. Do you have any more fundraisers or events on the horizon?

AMC are currently involved in raising funds to support Lismore as they continue to recover from the awful floods that they have experienced in recent times. This is being led by our charity officer, Mark Tanner, who is very passionate about helping others.

Hopefully, there’s many more to come. I think AMC is making a big difference ... and enjoying themselves in the process. Thanks Guys.

I grew up in Germany and completed my apprenticeship with AutoHaus Ederer in 2003. I made the decision to move to Australia in 2006, and a year later met my now wife Ashleigh. I was working as a mechanic and NRMA technician before we opened Automax in 2012. In the beginning it was only Ash and I working with two hoists, and now we are a team of eight. In 2019 we expanded Automax to include our 4X4 products and services and have not looked back!

Other than myself and Ash (who takes care of everything behind the scenes), Joel Shannon is the other face of Automax 4X4. You’ll find Joel on our front desk dealing with 4X4 enquiries and sales. Joel is extremely knowledgable in all things automotive, housework and cooking.

What makes Automax 4X4 different from other companies in the local area?

We are fully independent, not a franchise. We spend extra time getting to know our customers, what they do with their car, and what they want to get out of it. We know how important it is to get your suspension right to suit your load, get the perfect canopy, or bestlooking front end protection. We’re all 4WD enthusiasts, we know the local areas, and we know what works best for our customers. What is the best advice you can give to a prospective customer?

You drive your car every day, you need to trust the person working on your car. If you don’t have confidence in your mechanic or fitter to do the right thing, find someone you

Absolutely! You tell us what you want and what you want to do with your car, and we will work out a solution.

There are always different price ranges with all products, the main thing to remember is we only sell products we believe in.

How has the local automotive industry changed over the last few years?

We have noticed people have been spending more money on their cars through and since the pandemic, mainly due to the lack of travel options and the increase in car value. Mechanics are busier than ever. In addition to this, the future of vehicles is changing with the introduction and push towards all electric vehicles. We continue

to put our staff through additional training courses and will keep doing so as the industry continues to evolve.

What are your plans for the future of Automax 4X4?

We’ve been growing this business since we first opened in 2012. We plan to continue growing, the possibilities are endless. Could there be a bigger, newer second location in our future? We don’t know, but we’d love it if there was!

Best 4WD tracks on the Coffs Coast?

There’s so many out there, but our favorites are the tracks in Barcoongere State Forest including Pebbly Beach and the Sherwood & Wedding Bells State Forests. Pebbly Beach is a family favourite for us, we love camping with our three kids by the beautiful beach and creek. You’ll often find a “fleet” of Automax 4X4 cars or motorbikes up that way. We are so lucky to call the Coffs Coast home. Thanks Markus.

hen you move into residential aged care, the room price might be quoted as a lump sum, but you will have the choice to pay for your room as a lump sum, a daily fee or a combination.

In the same way that you can choose to buy or rent a home, so can you effectively choose to “buy” or “rent” your room in aged care. If you don’t have enough assets to pay the full lump sum or don’t want to sell your assets, this choice can help with affordability. But there are several important things to consider. If you pay a lump sum (called a refundable accommodation deposit – RAD) this is not lost money. The balance will be refunded to you or your estate when you leave, with repayment guaranteed by the Federal

WGovernment.

While you live in the aged care service, you are giving up access to your money and do not earn interest, but you will reduce the fees that you might otherwise have paid for renting the room. As interest rates increase, so may the benefits of paying the RAD. As a bonus, you might also qualify for additional age pension because the RAD is exempt for Centrelink and Veterans’ Affairs assets testing.

The decision whether to pay the lump sum or the daily fee is not an easy one and requires full analysis of your finances. You need to analyse the benefits and make sure you retain enough liquidity to meet your other ongoing expenses. Your estate plans and family situation may also impact which choice is better.

When making your choice, it is important to look beyond just the impacts when you enter

care, but also what might change over time and what happens to your estate. Make your choice easier with advice.

I am here to help.

What another year it has been! Coming out of the pandemic continued to throw challenges at us with getting back to business.

We have found new ways to work, and many businesses have changed their business model to adapt and will be stronger going forward.

We would like to wish all our clients, family & friends a happy and safe Christmas and prosperous New Year. Please take care over the holiday season and enjoy the festivities.

Please note that our office will

be closed from 12 pm Thursday 22 December 2022 and reopen Monday 9 January 2023.

The festive season is traditionally a time to spend with family and loved ones. It is also a time to reflect on the year that has gone and focus on your plans for the New Year. I find that many people think about their financial situation over the holiday period and how they can do things differently or improve their situation in the year ahead.

WOOLGOOLGA SPORTS COMPLEX It was fantastic to be at the opening of the Woolgoolga Sports Complex this month.

This facility is great for local families and sporting clubs. It will allow us to attract major sporting and cultural events. Importantly, people from our local community have been employed to operate the complex. This is a game changer for the whole of the northern beaches.

I secured $10 million in Federal funding; Gurmesh Singh MP has also secured $8 million for this project and Coffs Harbour City Council are contributing $4.6 million.

GLENREAGH held a community day recently. Good conversations and catch-ups with many agencies in attendance. Thanks for the great community lunch and good to see everyone. The countryside is looking great as well.

HOPWOOD HOMES

HOPWOOD HOMES

Hopwood Homes have guided over 1,000 families to achieve their vision of building their own home. From breezy open-plan beach houses up and down the Coffs Coast, to cosy rural dwellings going west out to Dorrigo. We had a chat with director, David Hopwood to find out more…

What is news at Hopwood Homes?

Actually, a lot! Firstly, as you can see, we are missing a big personality in the room…Brian, aka Hoppy! Don’t worry he hasn’t retired yet; just taking more of a step back in the business to an advisory role! We have also relocated to a new office space in Industrial Drive. The new office space is a better

reflection of where we are now as a business. I think what I am most excited about is the new showroom. It will be an incredible asset to our business, homeowners, and suppliers.

To me, it is a bit special and something I am proud of.

Oh, and you may have noticed…We have also refreshed our branding!

Wow, you have been busy. Let’s focus on the re-brand for a moment. What does the new brand mean to you and your future clients?

The brand reaffirms our longstanding presence in the industry along with our values of quality, respect, and progression! We worked closely with local legends Jena and Mitch at Coastal Creative Agency, they really took the time to understand our business, it’s history, our clients and our

processes, to produce this incredible logo. It pays respect to craftmanship – the skills and knowledge that are required throughout the build process, by each individual working on the project. We are re-aligning ourselves with local businesses, trades and suppliers who share this same respect for quality and workmanship. The last two years have taught us a lot, and we aren’t done yet! The new brand, for me personally, is a reminder of that. I am proud of where we now stand and excited for our continued growth, and presence, on the Coffs Coast.

That does sound exciting. To achieve this, you must have an incredible team, tell us more about them and their unique roles?

We really do have an incredible team! Everyone in the office has unique input into the build process, and I value this from each team member.

We have recently had Nick join our team as Site Supervisor. Nick has an amazing eye for detail, an incredible ability to problem solve and is just generally, a nice bloke.

Brian Irvin, or Irv as we like to call him, has taken on the role of Operations Manager. Irv’s duties are paramount, with his lengthy experience as a consultant, and certifier to Tier 1 and Tier 2 Builders, Irv’s knowledge and expertise have had a great

impact on the business already.

The gentleman himself, Mr Mark Bohringer, is still part of the team as Estimator. Mark, or Boz as he is more commonly known, has been with us for 15 years. Boz has many years of experience as a Carpenter/Builder onsite, as well as Supervision. He is a tap of information as well as an absolute gentleman. Continued over...

We are realigning ourselves with local businesses, trades and suppliers who share this same respect for quality and workmanship. The last two years have taught us a lot, and we aren’t done yet!

Angie and Helen round out our Administration team. Helen is our Contracts Administrator as well as Selections Specialist. Helen is the bright beautiful face you first see in our stunning new office! Angie has been with us for 9 years, she really is the left to my right. I value Angie and her role, as Accounts Manager she also tells me when to stop buying pretty, new things, for the office…sometimes I listen!

As Selections Consultants, both Helen and Angie are also undertaking an interior design course to help guide our clients through the process of selections and finishes.

We also have our field crew Warren and Richard. They can be seen around town in our Hopwood Homes truck. Warren and Richard work tirelessly to keep our sites clean and safe, materials in check and do the heavy lifting. I did help them once…like I say though, leave it to the professionals. Tell us about some of the new, exciting projects you are working on now and in the future.

Our new Display Home in Moonee Beach

will open next year! This one is Palm Springs Inspired, but with more of a Coastal Cool aesthetic. Internally think bold colours coupled with crisp whites, and lots of textures! It will certainly get people talking.

We have also just released 5 new House and Land Packages in Taylor’s Rise Estate, Bellingen. The home designs are something different for us too, I have really pushed our designs to align with trends and feedback from our clients. Think Scandi-Barn and Resort-Style Homes. What are the stand out features or the benefits of building with Hopwood Homes?

Experience, quality, and our incredible team! Our homeowners actually get to watch their home being built right in front of them

via regular on-site meetings. Technology has also been a big focus of our company. Our homeowners are granted access to their project via a unique App, and Desktop Portal. They can manage their selections, get video and pic updates from site, access all of their financial information about their project and communicate directly with the team here at Hopwood’s. Again, this is something I am very proud of.

Tell us about your community involvement. Community means everything to me. This is certainly something Mum and Dad instilled in us as children – this doesn’t just mean the Community of the Coffs Coast but also our local industry community and small business community. We sponsor junior rugby league and oz-tag, Allegra School, local clubs, Rally for Cancer, and have even sponsored a junior membership to Zion Boxing Club. Supporting the local community and small businesses seems to be very important to you, why?

Business isn’t just about sales and making money. I am a big believer in establishing and supporting a network of like-minded individuals. Business can be tough; it can keep you awake at night – you are constantly reflecting on what you do, how you do it, and why? That can get tiring. So to know I have an incredible community around me, helps!

I think there are some great things about to happen in Coffs! And I want to make sure I am a part of that. I want to see the Coffs Coast continue to grow. I want to see our business landscape expand, and along with that the opportunities for locals. There are great little businesses opening their doors every week here in Coffs, and I want them to feel supported by their community! So, get out there. Looking for a date night idea? Try Haus of Clay and grab a coffee from My Mates Place while you are there, and a cupcake of course from Sugar Plum. I love ingenuity and can see that in so many of the new businesses opening here in Coffs. How can we get in touch?

REAL ESTATE

You’re having the jitters. YOUR OPEN HOUSE IS TOMORROW. And first impressions count!

Help your real estate agent make it an open house to remember. Help them clinch that sale. The rule of thumb is to prepare well in advance, and not 24 hours before. Twenty-four hours will not be sufficient time for the nitty-gritty that will make or break a public showing. You remember how it was during school. If we crammed, we most likely failed the exam the next day, but when we studied weeks in advance, we felt we knew the subject matter by heart. The same principle applies to open houses. The harder and longer you prepare, the better the results will be. It may even put a few extra thousand dollars in your pocket! Make a lasting first impression. Most real estate agents agree - a clean house is the #1 priority. The word “clean”, however, does not only mean a house that has been tidied up a few hours earlier, a walkway that was swept and hosed over, or windows that were cleared of dust and dirt. “Clean” means a lot more than that.

Studies have shown that dwellings painted in neutral colours convey a more pleasant and warmer welcome to visitors; they are able to visualize better about how their own personal effects can blend with the colours. Imagine having a wall that’s painted fire engine red or bedrooms that look more like an artist’s mural because too many psychedelic colours are

flooding the eye. Re-painting your house may not be a must, but if you decide to do so, do it a few weeks before, that way the fumes don’t linger.

The clutter, please – if you don’t want your potential buyers to trip just as they’re entering the house, eliminate unnecessary furniture and house accessories to allow for more breathing room. If visitors can’t move about freely because there are obstructions along the way, chances are they’re likely to go somewhere else. Buyers will want to see the size of the closets, so eliminate the clutter. Leave the clothes and shoes neatly hung, but remove your grandmother’s old sewing machine.

If you have a family at home, don’t forget the children’s bedrooms. You know you’ve always wanted an excuse to clean up the toys, this is your chance. If the kids haven’t played with it for a while, pack it up and store it, they will get a kick out of getting out of storage at your new home.

Be considerate. While dogs and other pets are adorable creatures, they have no place in an

open house. One or two of your buyers might not be animal lovers or are allergic to animal hair. Some buyers also know of the damage and dirt these creatures leave on their tracks, so keep them out of the house until the open house is over. I know they are part of the family, but they are not part of the family who are buying or looking to buy your home.

And oh yes, how about some nice, delicate flowers that don’t give off a strong smell? This simple gesture will do wonders to liven up your home. Choose different pastel colours to serve as a contrast to the neutral background.

On the morning of the open home, open the windows and doors if weather permits, there is nothing like fresh air. Also take into account the season. If it’s a hot day, turn on the air conditioner half an hour before the open house, nothing is more welcoming then a cool home on a hot day, and vice versa a warm home on a cold day.

Above all, trust in the advice of your real estate agent.

Thanks for reading.
