BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

SQUIRREL'S NUT BUTTER Julie Pastrick, President + CEO, Greater Flagstaff Chamber, introduces Squirrel’s Nut Butter (SNB) which makes the world’s best allnatural, anti-chafe and skin restoration salves locally. But suprisingly, Squirrel's Nut Butter started by accident. Stacy and Chris Thornley, co-founders of SNB, had no intention of starting a salve company. But when their daughter’s eczema couldn’t be quelled, Stacy set to work in her kitchen and eventually concocted a winning recipe. Thanks to the healing powers of all-natural ingredients, their daughter’s eczema was relieved. After this successful trial, Stacy started to hand out her blend to friends and family around Flagstaff. In the dry air of the high desert, the moisturizing salve helped to revitalize and hydrate skin. It was another year before SNB was officially formed after the owners’ friend, Brian Marshall, nicknamed Squirrel, used the slick salve in place of his usual anti-chafe cream. SNB worked better than the usual stuff. Later that year, Matt Keyes used SNB to keep from chafing during a 100-mile foot race called the Western States 100. He successfully avoided chafing and blisters all day. The co-founders wanted to make the world a chafe-free place, but they needed a company name before they could market their product. In honor of the man who dared to use our skin restoration product in an unconventional way, Squirrel's Nut Butter was born. Since 2015, SNB’s award-winning blend of coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax and vitamin E oil has been used by athletes like runners, hikers, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, horseback riders, and unicyclists, and by anyone, anywhere trying to improve their skin health. Founded here in Flagstaff, Arizona, a hotbed for endurance sports, SNB is firmly committed to helping endurance athletes achieve their goals without discomfort from damaged skin. To show our appreciation for the endurance community, we’ve volunteered at more than 100 events around the country over the last three years. We’ve spread our outreach locally, too, by sponsoring film festivals, assisting at races, and donating to events in the Flagstaff area.

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY, GROW YOUR BUSINESS, CONNECT & ENGAGE

Chris Thornley

Co-Founder of Squirrel's Nut Butter

SNB was founded because of athletes and continues to thrive because of athletes, and that’s why we sponsor more than 100 athletes around the country, including 20 in Flagstaff alone. From Western States 100 winners, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers, and world record holders, to ultramarathon finishers, serial marathoners, back-of-thepack runners, hobby joggers, avid volunteers and race directors, our many athletes span the competitive spectrum. Our athletes climb mountains, circle tracks, blast down roads and maneuver through boulder fields. They test our products in every condition imaginable, and our products improve with their feedback. Since our early days and thanks to input from athletes, we've expanded our product line beyond the original, four-ingredient blend. Today, our products include Saddle Butter, a cycling-specific, anti-chafe salve with zinc oxide; Born to Rub, a spicy salve for pre- and post-exercise; Happie Toes, a foot-specific salve blended with peppermint and tea tree oils; a vegan version of the original Squirrel’s Nut Butter; and two different Body Butter products for all-body skin restoration. Whether you’re trying to complete your first half marathon or your tenth ultra-marathon, or you need a product to hydrate dry skin or keep your healthy skin healthy, or even if you just want to learn more about our all-natural, anti-chafe and skin restoration products, visit us at www.squirrelsnutbutter.com or in person at 506 N Grant Street, Suite N here in Flagstaff.

Jay’s Bird Barn has so much to offer in regards to anyone who loves nature, and of course birds. What is really special and unique about Jay’s Bird Barn is their mixing technique for the bird seed they sell. Yavapi Exceptional Industries is a non-profit located in Prescott that gives disabled adults the opportunity to work, and Jay’s Bird Barn uses this non-profit to create their unique blends of bird seeds that suit to different Flagstaff birds’ needs. This store is not only for bird lovers, however, they offer so much more because they are also a Hallmark Gold Crown store. Visit their website at www.jaysbirdbarn.com. Aired 12/8/18

Neal Jacques – Machine Solutions Machine Solutions is an equipment manufacturer that believes you are more than just a customer when working with them, you are a partner. This company provides manufacturing and testing equipment for catheter and medical device manufacturers. What makes them stand out is their high quality products made from multi-million dollar machinery. Although they do have a plethora of opportunities across the country, Machine Solutions’ heart is in Flagstaff because it is where it was originally founded. Neil does stress how labor force is a struggle in this industry because of how difficult it is to find mechanical engineers. Although they hand out only a few internships to students at NAU, they also offer an apprenticeship program where they train students from the school district. Check out Machine Solutions at www.machinesolutions.com. Aired 12/5/18

Advancing a Strong Community

In this issue of @7000ft we chatted with the Flagstaff Young Professionals, (FYP) a division of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber. They are 21-39 year old emerging leaders in the community looking to make a change for the better. With a strong board of directors, and young professionals who care deeply about community, career advancement, and civic engagement, FYP shares what makes them so successful.

FLAGSTAFF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHAT DO MEMBERS GET FROM BEING A PART OF FYP? Kelcy Hambsch - FYP Co-Events Chair Revenue Manager, Choice International "Through FYP, members will be able to network with other individuals walking through the same point in life as them. They can grow professionally and socially through different events." WHAT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT DOES FYP DO? Rachel McNamara - FYP Co-Marketing Chair Digital Marketing Consultant, Avande "Civic engagement creates stronger ties to our community, and provides enrichment and awareness of local needs. We have been to many non-profits to serve them including the Food Bank, the Humane Society, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and more." DO FYP MEMBERS HAVE A SENSE OF BELONGING IN THIS GROUP THAT IS VALUABLE TO THEIR CAREER DEVELOPMENT? Megan Roach - FYP Co-Marketing Chair Foundation Specialist, Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation "Absolutely. FYP is a great way to connect with other young professionals in Flagstaff. Through our networking mixers and service events, members can learn about each other and other businesses and organizations in town. Our professional development events create opportunities for our members to learn new skills." IS THERE A FOCUS ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND IS THAT A VALUABLE RESOURCE OF FYP? Zach Polston - FYP Professional Development Chair - Realtor/Owner, Realtor and Cobra Bail Bonds "I believe it’s a very valuable part of FYP. One of the main focus points is to grow our members professionally and encourage them to help others as well."

ARIZONA MEXICO COMMISSION VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK

Julie Pastrick Serves as Board Member of Arizona Mexico Commission and is sharing her thoughts about the importance of ratification of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement. The United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) is our new, improved and best-ever trade agreement that is intended to replace NAFTA. The Greater Flagstaff Chamber supports its speedy ratification since nearly one quarter of a million Arizona jobs rely on this trade relationship. This new agreement could be the new global standard for United States worldwide. On November 30, 2018 in Argentina, the three countries signed the agreement in principle for the USMCA. That meant there is still an opportunity for “minor”

modifications to the text. 95 percent of USMCA is the same as NAFTA. The new agreement retains positive elements from the original NAFTA, which eliminated virtually all tariffs between the three North American nations. The end result is $1.2 trillion in annual trade with our North American neighbors which supports 11 million American jobs. And the improvements are vast and extremely beneficial to our country but it is also noted that Arizona is one of the most important states nationally to the agreement. Congress needs to approve the updates in this agreement that benefit the USA. We are on a very good course with additions such as a digital trade chapter that is touted to be the best ever negotiated, by any country. Protection of intellectual property is huge; enhanced custom provisions to benefit our many national defense

contractors; expansion of export markets for agricultural products; expansion of US Dairy producers into the Canadian market; stronger Rules of Origin which encourages investment in US companies; increased production all across America for farmers with products like soybeans, beef, and much more. Trade deals are difficult. That said, this one has had broad bipartisan support and we have made progress on addressing the issues important to labor and environmentalist groups as well. As a Board member of the Arizona Mexico Commission I have learned first-hand how important this relationship with Mexico is to Arizona businesses since Mexico is our largest trade partner times four. What’s good for Arizona is great for Flagstaff too. Thank you!

BUSINESS ADVOCACY MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL THWART ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WITH AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPONENT On the evening of 19 February, the Mayor and City Council were presented an ordinance to rezone approximately 15 acres of land at Butler and Sawmill from light industrial and heavy industrial to highway commercial and high density residential called the McGrath Partners Zoning Map Amendment Request. One week prior to the formal Council Meeting, the Mayor and Council heard presentations on the proposed development project of residential housing and commercial (mixed use/multifamily housing) by City of Flagstaff Community Development staff, including traffic engineers, the City’s Housing Department and various other city staff who provided countless hours to get the project to the finish line. After city staff presentations, Mayor and Council queried the developer Mark Lindley of McGrath Partners about the project and made several demands over what had already extracted. The demands included reducing the number of four-bedroom units and giving more cash to the City’s Housing Department. Over the course of the next seven days, McGrath engineers and team leaders worked with city staff to place in the development agreement the exact concessions asked for by the Mayor and City Council. At the 19 February Council Meeting, the Mayor and specific members of City Council again queried city staff and the developer for two-plus hours. After the questions, Councilmember McCarthy moved the rezone and it was seconded by Councilwoman Salas. There was no debate, and a 5 – 2 vote ensued denying the applicant the rezoning of property.

Sadly, the Flagstaff community lost an important housing and economic development project with the rezone denial. The project was estimated to generate over half a million dollars in property taxes annually, after completion, and would have been the new home to Goodwill and OneAZ Credit Union on the commercial piece. We cannot speculate on why certain individuals voted the way they did, as they did not explain their votes to the public during the discussion on the specific agenda item. The result is not a good sign for future developers who are willing to present economic development projects, including projects with affordable housing components in the City limits.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DENTISTRY

Dr. Ireland

Dentist, Northern Arizona Biological Dentistry

In 2016, Dr. Barbara Ireland was deciding where to build a holistic dental practice. Her research landed her family in Flagstaff, Arizona. Dr. Ireland was shocked to find that, in spite of the numerous naturopathic and integrative medical care options available, the northern portion of Arizona had little to no integrative dental care opportunities. This fact, coupled with her family's love for the mountains and seasonal northern Arizona beauty, solidified the decision to plant roots in Flagstaff.

Dr. Ireland and her husband/office manager, Andrew Kirkpatrick, were able to open Northern Arizona Biological Dentistry late 2017. They started out with one or two patients a day, networking with the local naturopaths, chiropractors and other integrative-minded businesses in the Flagstaff area. Historically, anyone interested in this type of dental care had to travel to Phoenix. Within the first six months, Dr. Ireland and Andy began to see growth at an unexpected rate and are now thrilled to report having a whole new list of stresses surrounding keeping up with a fast-growing dental office.

Biological dentistry is not a specialty. It is a paradigm shift with the basic fundamental premise of treading as lightly as possible on the patient’s bio-terrain, while delivering high quality dental care using the most biocompatible materials and methods available. At Northern Arizona Biological Dentistry, they offer alternatives to metal or BPA-laden restorative materials and facilitate biocompatibility blood testing for the more chemically sensitive patients. They offer a safe amalgam filling removal technique that protects both the patient and the clinicians from excessive exposure to mercury vapors. Mercury is the third most toxic substance to humans and makes up over 50% of an amalgam filling. They use minimally invasive restorative techniques and offer Myobrace, a myofuntional airway-centered orthodontic treatment that treats the cause of crooked teeth rather than the symptoms with no relapse or bonded retainers. They offer PerioLase (the only laser FDA certified for regenerative periodontal procedures) LANAP laser treatment for periodontal disease that can stimulate regeneration of the bone and gums and often save even the most hopeless teeth. Dr. Ireland feels grateful for the warm reception in the Flagstaff community and is currently welcoming new patients to Northern Arizona Biological Dentistry. Northern Arizona Biological Dentistry can be reached at (928) 440-5377 or management@nabdentistry.com
