BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK Fall has arrived and the leaves are turning, temperatures are dropping and we look forward to a robust fourth quarter, 2019! If third quarter is any indication, we should prepare for a hectic holiday season with hopefully a unanimous, big focus on shopping local to support our small business community. The holiday season is an integral time for many retailers who make the lions share of their budget these next couple of months so please do your part and buy local! You'll be contributing to the livelihood we enjoy in Flagstaff. In this issue we are proud to focus our cover feature on a local construction firm that has truly grown from the boots up in Flagstaff. KCS is celebrating 20 years and I think you’ll like the interview with Tim Kinney, CEO. I sure did. Proof and testimony to hard work and desire to succeed is evident in his remarks. Most of you know I am an avid outdoor recreation buff. Whether it’s cycling, hiking, or running our FUTS system, I’m in. So the story you’ll read about the expansion plans for I-17 is exciting because it’s the critical highway connecting millions of residents in Southern Arizona to our great mountain town, the great outdoors, NAU, and all we have to offer. I was happy to receive an invitation to attend Governor Ducey’s formal announcement about the expansion we can look forward to. Please read the details in this issue. Next year is a census year. It’s really important that every Arizonan is counted. To that end, the Chamber will be working closely with the City and County Census Committees to support their efforts to get the means by which every Arizona can be counted understood by all residents. Arizona’s Complete Count Committee does just that and we’re proud to serve on the Statewide Committee to find and support the best techniques to count everyone. More on this over the next several months since Census Day is April 1.

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY, GROW YOUR BUSINESS, CONNECT & ENGAGE

Julie Pastrick President + CEO

And finally, we are at a critical time in our country when we need Congress to ratify the United States Mexico Canada (USMCA) trade agreement. Mexico's legislature has ratified. The USMCA is the strongest and most advanced trade agreement ever negotiated and rebalances our trading relationship with both Mexico and Canada. It is beneficial to American workers and it modernizes rules of trade among our countries reflecting the needs of our 21st century economy. You can learn facts, contact Congress, author a letter and engage industry. 12,000,000 American jobs are directly linked to this trade agreement. A new website can help you learn more: www.usmcanow.com Thank you to every business and non-profit that is a member investor in the Chamber. We believe strongly that a healthy business environment and a vibrant community are inseparable. To that end, without your financial support of your local Chamber,, we couldn’t do the work on your behalf. We are grateful. Enjoy Fall! Happy reading.

Advancing a Strong Community

Tim Kinney, CEO Gabe Smith, Executive Vice President Mike Thomas, President Kinney Construction Services Celebrates 20 Years

TIM KINNEY WHY ARE YOU IN YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION? My grandfather and uncles on my mother’s side were machinists. Everyone in my family had a shot at working in a machine shop at an early age. When I decided to go to school my uncles tried to convince me to major in mechanical engineering. I chose civil engineering because of the building and real estate development aspects. I graduated from NAU in 1982 when there was an unemployment rate of over 9%. The only job I could find was back in NYC with a large real estate company that had a construction division, so I went directly into the construction industry as opposed to engineering.

HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS OR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION? I have been in this profession for 37 years. I’ve been in business for myself as a Commercial General Contractor for 35 years and as Kinney Construction Services, Inc. (KCS) for 20 years.

FROM WHOM DO YOU SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE? I’ve had a long career with a broad variety of types of projects and clients in varied geographic locations. As a result, I rely a lot on my own experience and judgment when it comes to my business, but I’m always open to new ideas and the expertise of others.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR PROFESSION? It would be tough to break into this business today. There are big barriers to entry that were not there as much when I started out. My advice would be to be prepared to work 80-100 hours per week, always do what you say you’re going to do, and always take the high road no matter what the situation.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? Along with trying to mix pleasure with my

CEO/ KSC KINNEY CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

121 E Birch Ave #500, Flagstaff, AZ 86001 (928) 779-2820

business travels, I ride my bicycle in the woods, ride my motorcycle on long scenic trips, boat on Lake Powell, surf occasionally (a childhood pastime), hang out with my dog and horse, and visit with my two granddaughters, which is my biggest pleasure. They are a riot.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE IN OUR COMMUNITY? PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW YOU IMPLEMENT THIS ROLE IN DAILY WORK. My role in our community consists of a long history of volunteerism and monetary contributions. I particularly target the less fortunate and vulnerable community members including the elderly, children, the disabled, and single moms and dads struggling to make ends meet. I implement this on a daily basis through volunteering on boards and committees, donating services my company can provide, donating to organizations that meet our philanthropic mission of serving the less fortunate, and creating a culture of philanthropy throughout my company. I also support political candidates that share these beliefs regardless of their party affiliation.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? When I was young in business, my inspiration was achievement and being the best at what I do. Today, after a long successful career my inspiration comes from the young adults that work for me. I am inspired by their growth and achievements in their careers as well as their personal lives. Starting their families, having their first children, buying their first house. It’s like seeing my own children achieve these goals. I’ve entered a new chapter in my life on a personal and business level which also gives me inspiration. Life is good!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE AND STAY IN FLAGSTAFF? I was born and raised in New York and attended NAU from 1977 to 1982. Being a single father at the time, I unwillingly went

back to New York after graduation to seek work in a very bad economic climate. I set a goal to return to Flagstaff and achieved that goal in 1995. Once you get a taste of Flagstaff it’s tough to get it out of your soul. I sold my company in NYC and returned to Flagstaff. I was semiretired and had no intention of starting another construction company until I was coaxed by one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met, the late Stan Williams. After completing a few projects I was convinced that operating a construction company in Arizona was much more compatible with my ethics and values and KCS took off from there. Flagstaff is also a place I am very glad my children grew up in.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS? Persistence, hard work, and taking the high road at all times.

WHAT IS WORSE THAN FAILURE? Not pursuing something and finding out later that you could have achieved it. It is better to fail. You learn a lot from failure and those lessons stick with you.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU TODAY THAN IT WAS 10 YEARS AGO? Personal time enjoying my friends, relatives, horse, and dog.

WHAT MANTRA OR RULE DO YOU STRIVE TO LIVE BY? No one succeeds on their own, no matter how self-made you think you are. An old Canadian Superintendent on a railroad construction crew I worked on as a laborer used to say, “Hard ain’t easy.” There isn’t anything easy about making it in this world even if it’s just to survive. If you succeed in your goals, no matter how little or big they are, reach out to someone else and give them a hand.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 10 YEARS? Alive and kicking!

CHAMBER HONORS ODEGAARD'S SEWING CENTERS 50TH ANNIVERSARY TELL US ABOUT THE BEGINNING OF ODEGAARD’S SEWING?

Odegaard’s Sewing Center started November 1, 1969 at 108 N. San Francisco Street and I know this from the business license date that we still hang at the shop. But my grandparents were in Flagstaff for several years before that, managing the Flagstaff Singer Sewing Machine store before they bought the store from the Company, because back then the stores were all owned by Singer. They were pioneers in the business.

WHY DID YOUR FAMILY CHOOSE FLAGSTAFF?

My grandparents were living in Phoenix where my grandfather was working for Singer and my grandmother was doing alterations at a dry cleaning business. Singer was looking for a manager couple for the Flagstaff store and they took the opportunity. I was told by a longtime Singer employee that the Flagstaff Store was only the second store that was sold when Singer decided to sell off their stores with the first being located in Nogales. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MILESTONES ODEGAARD’S HAS HAD OVER THE YEARS?

Not sure if they would be called milestones but my Dad, Van Odegaard, started to work at the store in 1977 and still works the store today. I’m a third generation Odegaard who is working the store. For nearly four decades we were downtown, next to the Orpheum Theater but, luckily, and outgrew our space. Eleven years ago the opportunity to move to our current location on Fourth Street came up so we decided to move. It was a good move for us though many thought we were crazy because we did it at the height of the recession. Nonetheless, it worked out great for the business. WHAT COULD YOU ATTRIBUTE TO YOUR BUSINESS SUCCESS?

Hard work, sacrifice, being fiscally responsible, high level of customer service and having the passion of believing in our trade. With those values, you can create a family community that will support you. That said, it’s hard work to operate a brick and mortar store in today’s retail world.

CHAMBER BUSINESS ADVOCACY From Flagstaff’s Fourth Street Widening to Critical Highway I-17 Expansion Recent announcements from local and state governments on major Arizona transportation infrastructure improvements have been very good for Flagstaff residents and businesses according to Chamber President & CEO, Julie Pastrick. “It’s very nice when advocacy efforts pay off, and they are paying off in spades at the moment,” Pastrick stated when asked about recently announced projects. “We have been at this for a long time, and we know these road improvements will very much build a better future for Flagstaff. I-17 is a critical highway connecting Flagstaff to the Valley and safely arriving at our destinations whether for business, tourism, NAU students, or day to day mobility(without delays) will be greatly improved and will definitely benefit communities north of Phoenix.

Chamber President Julie Pastrick, back row center, was asked to attend Governor Ducey's press conference about improved safety and reduced congestion on I-17

The improvements Chamber President/ CEO Pastrick refers to include widening I-17 to three lanes along a 15 mile stretch between Anthem and Black Canyon City and also building an 8-mile stretch system of flex lanes on the grade between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. The flex lanes will operate as a separate two-lane roadway for one direction of traffic at a time depending on the need along those steep 8 miles. The project is set to begin by spring 2021 and completion is expected by 2023. In total the significant improvement projects will cost more than $300 million and with enhanced safety and reduced congestion, what a huge economic impact we are about to see for Flagstaff," Pastrick finished. Our local Fourth Street widening comes after many years of advocacy by the Chamber together with the City of Flagstaff and ADOT, who both

12

@

upped the ante and made funding for this particular project a priority. The construction project will begin in spring 2020, and will cost over $12 million, partially funded by the City of Flagstaff and ADOT monies received via federal grants. The Chamber sent several formal support letters for the project to the U.S. Department of Transportation in an effort to dislodge federal BUILD Grant dollars essential to accelerating the start of the project. Highway I-17 expansion funding was a Governor Ducey priority in the 20192020 Arizona budget to the tune of $130 million; with support from Senators Kyrsten Sinema, Martha McSally and others, ADOT won a competitive $90 million infrastructure grant for building America (INFRA) which goes towards this project; Maricopa Association of Governments is investing $50 million in the widening; and so it goes. State, local and Federal partnerships

7000ft | OCTOBER 2019 | VOL 5, ISSUE 7 | GREATER FLAGSTAFF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

are the core of how transportation infrastructure gets improved. We all know that both of these roadways will enhance our quality of life in the High Country.

GOOD MORNING FLAGSTAFF 9/12 On September 12th, the Flagstaff business community came together for Good Morning Flagstaff, hosted by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. WILLIAMS BUSINESS ALLIANCE LUNCHEON 9/25 The Williams Business Alliance, a division of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber, convened in the Santa Fe Room of the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel with train General Manager, Jeff D'Arpa last month. What a great opportunity Williams businesses had to connect with each other and with Flagstaff companies too. Good news was shared that was helpful to business including guest presentations from both Supervisor Matt Ryan, Coconino County and Career Navigator, Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona, Jennifer Gale. Supervisor Ryan was able to update local residents about the importance of Forest Health and measures that Coconino County has been taking since the Museum Fire happened in July. Resources are being dedicated to clearing high elevation timber and brush to prevent rapid spread of wildfire in both Flagstaff and Williams. He urged Williams businesses to contact the County to be very familiar with the many services they offer countywide. Jennifer Gale, Goodwill, presented a free opportunity for local businesses to upskill their current employees through a grant for Digital Literacy they have been awarded. All things internet, power point, excel, computer privacy and more are designed to be learned in four separate pods after which a certificate is awarded to the learner. The Greater Flagstaff Chamber is partnering with Goodwill to bring these classes to Williams for local business growth.

Besides promotion, advocacy, business exposure and raising visibility for member investors by connecting to more consumers, we produced Good Morning Williams, elected a Williams business leader to our Board of Directors, organized Business After 5 Network Development Mixers, and we are excited to feature the WBA in our Destination Flagstaff magazine. We have been happy that the two communities are working towards similar missions and every member counts. The Chamber advocates for the success and prosperity of all businesses, non-profits and educational institutions in our region-and we thank ALL our businesses for your trust and financial investment in the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. We have been happy together that the two communities are working towards similar missions and every member counts!
