BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK Last month the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce & Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation presented the Chamber’s Annual Luncheon and Athena Awards with an energetic and well received keynote address delivered by Governor Doug Ducey. More than 600 movers and shakers from across the state, including local and state elected officials filled the High Country Conference Center to capacity. During the meeting we showed our new marketing video, ‘I AM THE CHAMBER’ (including its bloopers) showing just a few of the many faces who make up the Greater Flagstaff Chamber business investors. We are grateful to each of you who attended and hope you enjoyed the time together as much as we did. Chamber Awards were received by Craig Moody, Chamber Small Business Champion, Mammoth Restoration;Cecily Maniaci, Small Business Achiever, Toasted Owl Restaurants , Hoot Mart, Grand Canyon Spirits; and CT McMurry, Volunteer of the Year, QC Office Products. Each of these Chamber members showed a high level of business accomplishment and dedication to advancing the Chamber’s mission of building a healthy business climate and strengthening a vibrant community. We are proud to say that in this issue you can read more about the ATHENA Award recipients including Jesica Barker, DancEvolution, ATHENA Young Professional and Dr. Colleen Smith, President, Coconino Community College, 2020 ATHENA recipient. What a wonderful experience for 9 ATHENA nominees and 6 Young Professional nominees as the crowded room heard stories about their contributions to our community, their business success, and capacity to mentor other females along their career goals. Our Cover Story features a small business that warms the heart of many in our community because they care for pets at Wags and Whiskers. I found myself giggling when I read their Q&A and think you’ll enjoy their profile as well.

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY, GROW YOUR BUSINESS, CONNECT & ENGAGE

Julie Pastrick President + CEO

Even though the largest fundraising event for the Chamber just happened in February we now turn our sights onto The Classic, the Flagstaff Chamber’s annual golf outing that proves to be a wonderful time for all teams engaged year after year. Taking place on Friday, May 8 at the Flagstaff Ranch Golf Club we hope you register your team online today. In closing if there is one thing that I have learned about our local business community in recent years, it is the depth of our resiliency. Just think about it for a moment. Through thick and through thin, through good times and through difficult times, there is one constant. Our business community remains united, and committed to ever-strengthening our collective voice through your support of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber…where together we believe: a healthy and thriving business climate and a vibrant community are inseparable. KAREN & STEVE BUTLER WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION? We had a business in Phoenix, and after selling it and finding this business, we loved the idea, the location change and the challenge of taking on a new project! HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS OR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION? The business was opened in 1998, we purchased it in 2012 and got to work adding the two camp yards, private pet suites, several more dens, artificial grass and many more upgrades to provide the best quality boarding for Flagstaff pets. IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND CHANGE YOUR PROFESSIONAL PATH IN SOME WAY, WOULD YOU? IF NO, WHY NOT? Business wise, we would have looked for land rather then an existing industrial space and take more time to engage in seminars and classes right out of the gate. Personally, I wish we could have finished college. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY? Meeting the pets! They are very funny and bring so much joy- you can’t have a bad day, they won’t let you! We also love our pet parents. Like us they only want the best, so they are very willing to learn, listen and help us have such a positive atmosphere, not only for the dogs but to work in as well. The excitement dogs have coming in to see their friends always brightens our day.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR PROFESSION? Join the different groups out there for this industry, take seminars, meet your local vets, take HR classes, just become as knowledgeable about the industry as you can. Items you might not consider initially like chemicals, food, vaccines are things that you are going to need to be on top of, don’t let someone else educate you, do your own research. Keep an open mind and a willingness to learn. TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PERSONAL SUCCESS? Our marriage of 38 years! We both have different backgrounds and training but are willing to listen to each other (most of the time), share a good sense of humor and are willing to get dirty. We would never ask our staff to do something we aren’t willing to do ourselves. DOES YOUR WORK DIFFER FROM THE EXTERNAL PERCEPTION OF WHAT YOU DO? IF YES, HOW SO? Yes, very much so. People don’t realize all the back-house stuff that goes on. Lots of cleaning, paperwork, follow up, making sure vaccines are good, pets are healthy, training staff, physical labor, repairs, marketing etc...it's not just playing with pups all day! Preparation and maintenance for county inspections is pretty intense, and we are so proud to have gotten a 100% every year! Our own dogs stay here during the day with us and we want the best quality space for them as well as every animal we host.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN OR TO BALANCE OUT YOUR WORKLIFE? Dinners out, family time, and we love to take our 4-wheeler out in the forest roads and explore. WHAT INSPIRES YOU OR REMOTIVATES YOU? Our grandchildren. We want them to be proud of us and to be able to say my Nana and Grampa were good at what they did. And as Steve always says, we have to look in the mirror every day and be able to smile back at ourselves. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PUT DOWN ROOTS IN FLAGSTAFF? The weather, community, and a relief from the Phoenix heat! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING IN THE FLAGSTAFF COMMUNITY? The view, having four seasons and the night sky with beautiful stars! We love to sit outside at night and just look. WHAT PART OF YOUR LIFE TODAY COULD YOU NEVER HAVE ANTICIPATED 10 YEARS AGO? Being able to live here in beautiful Flagstaff full time.

AND THE RECIPIENTS ARE...

Dr. Colleen Smith President, Coconino Community College

Dr. Smith has lived a life of serving community, mentoring and being a true champion for women and the underserved for the past 40 years. Colleen is a first-generation college graduate, earning her bachelor's and master's at Texas A&M and her doctorate at Texas Women’s University. She has always been a pioneer for women entering male-dominated fields. In 1995 she took a position in Wyoming overseeing programs such as welding, electrical, mine maintenance, plumbing, and pipefitting – careers that are filled by mostly men which sets the tone for other women to follow in her footsteps. Also, Dr. Smith was the first female president of the Southwest Junior College Football Association. In 2016 Dr. Smith became the fifth president of Coconino Community College, serving 375 administrators, faculty and staff, and a student body of 9000 annually. And DR. COLLEEN SMITH today, only one in three college presidents are female which demonstrates her extraordinary Coconino Community professional excellence and her high-level talent that garners confidence and trust among her College peers in a male dominated arena. Under her leadership, she was able to secure a 1-million-dollar grant from Del E. Webb Foundation to allow the college to update its construction management facilities and add much needed classes in the trades. In her short tenure, she has created over a dozen collaborations in the Flagstaff community. Colleen is committed to giving back to Flagstaff outside of her role at CCC. Dr. Smith is an active member of the Arizona Community Coordinating Council, United Way of Northern Arizona, ECONA, LAUNCH Flagstaff, and the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. She has won more than a dozen distinguished leadership awards over the past years. Also, her passion for advancing and supporting women shines with leadership through the following organizations: Flagstaff Women’s Leadership, Arizona Women in Higher Education, League of Innovation Executive Leadership Institute and American Association of University Women. As an advocate for women, she has guided and advised students considering careers predominantly filled my men. Dr. Smith notably takes women under her wing, even opening her closet, to help young women advance to be strong leaders.

Jesica Barker Owner/Founder, DancEvolution

JESICA BARKER DancEvolution

Jesica founded DancEvolution in 2011 to teach her 3-year-old twin daughters to dance in their basement. She had a total of 10 girls at the time. In 2018, enrollment exceeded the capacity of their home and moved into a commercial building. Currently, Jesica has over 200 girls enrolled at her studio. During her 9 years as a dance instructor, she has impacted the lives of over 500 girls. Her annual revenue has grown over 600% since her first class. Jesica taught all classes until she bought the building. She now employs 4 women teachers who help with the busy schedule at DancEvolution. Jesica also recruits a half dozen other women to help with web design, costumes, social media, photography and more. One thing that makes Jesica and her business stand out is her installation of “LEAP” values, Love, Excellence, Accountability, and Positivity, among her students.

When Jesica is not busy with her empowering dancers, she is volunteering at her church mentoring women ages 11-18. She teaches these women lessons on faith, divine nature, individual worth, choice and accountability, good work, integrity, and virtue. She also sets up weekly activities to help women set goals in their spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical life. The activities include clothing and bedding drives for homeless shelters and Hope Cottage. They have also helped with the city’s Graffiti Busters program. Jesica also donates her time tutoring math to students. Finally, Jesica does outreach to the special need’s community, by donating her time and energy to a group of women with Down’s syndrome.

CHAMBER ADVOCACY: HOUSING FEE CONCERNS Mayor & Council to Consider Raising Fees 300% on New Commercial & Housing Development: City's Housing Fee Hikes Contrary to Affordable Housing On April 7, 2020, the Flagstaff Mayor and City Council will hear another request from City Community Development staff on raising current development fees on new commercial and residential development. The new fee hikes increase existing development fees 300%, and almost certainly make new housing development in Flagstaff more expensive. Housing developers pass the new fee hikes on to the home buyer in higher home costs. Flagstaff already has housing costs well above the national average. The Chamber receives quarterly cost of living studies, and Flagstaff's housing cost cumulative score for 2019 was well above 30% higher than the national average. Those City Councilmembers & City Community Development Staff in support of the fee hikes argue "growth should pay for growth," implying the additional fees are needed for the City to provide services to new residents. This theory is patently false and misleading, as new residents in Flagstaff will pay property taxes directly to the City. That property tax revenue is supposed to go to the general fund for services. Please take a moment and voice your concern about City policies that contribute to higher housing costs, higher rents, and higher prices on commercial goods. Visit our Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Action Center and send the Mayor and City Council a note about the proposed fee hikes. Speaking of using your voice, don't forget to utilize this grassroots advocacy software under the "Take Action" page on our website to stay in the loop about business-applicable news like this and to easily access contact information for local and state representatives. Connecting with your elected officials and taking a stand on legislation that impacts your business is a crucial part of being an engaged business owner, and can help you see how the chamber is advocating on your behalf. Staying involved of upcoming decisions and showing the diversity and strength of our chamber community is crucial as we face business changes over time. Thank you to Foothills Bank for helping to sponsor our VoterVoice Initiative!

Greater Flagstaff Chamber Honors Businesswoman Cecily Maniaci, Toasted Owl Cafe with 2020 Business Achiever of the Year Award Cecily’s three favourite things are vintage salvage, food, and people. One spring day while walking downtown Flagstaff with a dear friend discussing her new idea on how to combine her three favourite things, she came upon a small storefront in a bank on Birch Avenue for rent. Staring through the big glass windows, her mind went wild with ideas for her new shop. The space was small, but just big enough to make her dream a reality. The kitchen was very small with only a sink, convection oven and a three-plate burner and a toaster. Cecily created a small rotating menu that featured a breakfast burrito and three other dishes. She decorated the little shop with owls she had collected and the doors of the first Toasted Owl Café opened in the fall of 2013. With the help of her daughter’s Northern Arizona University friends as employees, the first restaurant had lines out the door, requiring a larger space. Cecily then found an old house a mile away on 12 Mike’s Pike that she felt would be perfect for the new Owl. After extensive remodeling including a new kitchen, dining room, retail display space and a 1200 sq. ft. dog friendly patio, the new restaurant opened in November of 2015 with great success. Feeding the need for an east-side location in Flagstaff, Cecily then found another space on Cortland St. After extensive remodeling, this location opened in March of 2017. The Toasted Owl Cafés have enjoyed tremendous acceptance and on the weekends, the dog-friendly patios are frequently packed, with lines of guests out the door. Outstanding media coverage and “best of” awards continue to support the brand as being the “best place to have breakfast and lunch” in Arizona. Cecily says, “I have to pinch myself every morning when I wake up to know that this is not a dream. It just goes to prove that if you love what you do, then everything else will follow.” Today, after thousands of meals, millions of smiles and a lot of hooting, the Toasted Owl Café® is now available as a franchise. If you’re a hands-on operator with lots of experience and financial ability and wish to open your own Toasted Owl Café®, you can learn more on their website!
