BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK Another year comes to a close as we embrace the hope and excitement that 2020 will bring. Looking ahead, local businesses are preparing for a $3.00 wage increase within 12 months…$13 this year and $15 in 2021. As we engage with our members of every kind of business, we hear you and your uncertainty in the future as this shift to higher wages simultaneously shifts entire business models, numbers of employees, hours offered for work and price points that impact consumer buying power. The Chamber will continue to advocate on your behalf, survey local business to track effects the wage increases have and provide tools and services to address needs and concerns. In this issue, we are very pleased to highlight our good friends at the Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation, local leaders in nonprofit work in our community. For many years the Foundation has been the lead sponsor for the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and ATHENA Awards, and are dedicated to celebrating the hard work and enrichment that ATHENA and Young Professional nominees bring to our community. Please enjoy this article which also features 2019 ATHENA recipient Christina Caldwell of Goodwill of Northern and Central Arizona, and Young Professional recipient Kelly Culbertson of Nackard Pepsi. Speaking of this event, the time is right now to sign up for the Annual Meeting and Athena Awards taking place on Friday, February 14, 11:30-1:15 at High Country Conference Center. You can RSVP by calling the Chamber or by registering your table or sponsorship online. This event sell out quickly and is a wonderful community event, so please plan ahead and set aside the time to attend.

NORTHERN ARIZONA HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION WHAT LED TO THE FORMATION OF NORTHERN ARIZONA HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION? There were several reasons that made sense in creating a separate nonprofit corporation: First, it provides a more effective vehicle for the investment of charitable gifts and for the management of an endowment program, a deferred gift program, and an investment portfolio. It benefits donor stewardship: attention and reporting to donors is better in a fundraising-focused organization. Next, cooperative grants and projects with other community health entities is easier for a separate foundation. Finally, an independent foundation provides donors with greater assurance that their gifts will be used as requested and not ‘lost’ in the millions of dollars flowing into the health system. They take comfort knowing that leaders on the board are concentrating on seeking gifts, making grant awards in the community, and ensuring funds are invested wisely. WHEN WAS IT ESTABLISHED? The Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation was established as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in July 2016. WHAT IS THE MISSION AND PURPOSE OF YOUR FOUNDATION? We are committed to our vision: a future when every person in northern Arizona has equal access to quality healthcare and the opportunity to achieve optimal health. We engage in meaningful philanthropy

and grant making to advance health and wellbeing for everyone in the region. In essence, we support the communities of northern Arizona by raising the level of health and quality of life. We accomplish this work through funding, convening, and advocacy with donors, funders, nonprofits, governments, and community agencies to advance health and wellbeing. WHAT ARE THE MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS FOR THE FOUNDATION? Our region’s health priorities drive our fundraising and grant making priorities. These priorities are positive behavioral health outcomes, reduction in the incidence and negative impacts of chronic disease, and improved access to quality care. During 2020, our efforts will have an even stronger focus on mental and behavioral health, a growing area of need in northern Arizona. ARE THERE OTHER FOUNDATIONS YOU LOOK UP TO IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY? Our Foundation is a rarity, in that very few such foundations are focused on both raising and disbursing funds for community health. Most raise funds for their associated health system only. Our mission involved both raising and disbursing funds while we support both the health system and health-focused community nonprofits. TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THE FOUNDATION’S SUCCESS? Our success begins at home, starting with our incredibly dedicated staff and Board of Directors. Each person is committed to our vision and mission

and contributes to both through their talents. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with some of the most creative and dedicated people. Our passionate donors and funders bring their ideas to the health challenges in our region. Dedicated nonprofit leaders serve our diverse communities, and foundations work with us to maximize our collective resources to advance the state of health in northern Arizona. We could not achieve our vision without these amazing people. HOW CAN AN ORGANIZATION GO ABOUT APPLYING FOR FUNDING? For those eligible nonprofits that support the region’s health priorities as we defined above, there are two options for funding. The Foundation offers sponsorships in amounts less than $5,000 to support events and initiatives that advance community health in northern Arizona. Those interested should visit nahealthfoundation.org/foundationsponsorships We also offer the Northern Arizona Community Health Grant, an annual competitive grant award in amounts greater than $50,000. The priority for the 2020 grant cycle is behavioral health. We seek applications for projects that will have maximum impact on advancing the improvement of behavioral health outcomes. Ideally, the projects will involve collaborations and applications will support innovation in behavioral health approaches. JOINT SESSION BETWEEN CHAMBER AND CITY COUNCIL On December 9th, The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce was engaged in a joint session with the Flagstaff City Council and Mayor. President and CEO Julie Pastrick spoke on the importance of economic growth and job creation before attendees including Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans, Vice Mayor Shimoni, and the council members. Brought to speak on the crucial issues of healthcare, infrastructure, transportation, small business health and the local economy was a Chamber-organized panel of Flo Spyrow, Guillermo Cortes, Ron Getto, and Robby Findlay. Each with their own perspective on the local economy and future of Flagstaff, they presented with passion for their work in equal part with their concerns for community issues that need to be addressed. Topics ranged from taxation to minimum wage to local housing costs, with an emphasis on the need to keep local business strong and maintain our community as an attractor for employers as well as potential employees and to ensure the financial health of our city.

Dan Folk addresses Flo Spyrow, Vice Mayor Shimoni, and Julie Pastrick about the process for zoning and approval for local infrastructure and built work projects near the end of the council session, December 9th.

Flo Spyrow, CEO and President of Northern Arizona Healthcare as well as Chamber Board Director, shared her focus on building a robust economy by balancing the needs of education, healthcare, housing and economy. As the only Level 1 Trauma Center North of Phoenix, NAH has over 104,000 annual encounters and is a vital aspect of the local economy providing high quality, safe care to locals and visitors alike. With an eye on the horizon, she spoke of the rise of ambulatory care and focus on affordable care and transparency. Robby Findlay of Findlay Automotive Group voiced his perspective as a business owner locally and across the state. His ability to draw comparisons between the local business climate and economic indicators across the state has brought up concerns on the rate of local taxation and the obstacles to pricing cars in Flagstaff and his drive to always keep the price competitive with Phoenix dealerships. With the auto industry as a major indicator of the economy, his points raised financial concerns that were echoed by Ron Ghetto, owner and operator of Starlight Lanes. After the vote to raise minimum wage passed, Ghetto took the leap forward to pay his employees $15.50 hourly now rather than gradually increasing, and has concerns about it's impact over time. Already he is having to balance fewer hours to avoid raising prices, but not being able to hire younger, entry level employees due to a loss of profits weighs on him. He spoke on how important he views a first job in teaching responsibility and time management, and with the raised minimum wage he sees it being much more difficult for young people without experience to be hired. This was echoed by a reminder that these higher wages will be passed on the community via increasing prices, a trend already in motion. Rounding out the Chamber panel was Guillermo Cortes, a partner of SWI as well as a partner in Kickstand Kafe, a local favourite coffee house. With interests on both the municipal and local sides of business, Cortes highlighted the importance of community development and for speed and collaboration in zoning projects to allow Flagstaff to remain competitive and attractive. While there has long been a "Flagstaff way" of doing things, it is important to embrace changes necessary to keep our community healthy and thriving. The Chamber thanks the panel members as well as the Mayor and Council for their time and the collaborative nature of the session, hopefully the first of many of this format.

Councilwomen Jamie Whelan speaks on the importance of issues being brought to the attention of the city council, seated between Ron Ghetto and Flo Spyrow who provided local insight on the Flagstaff economy, saying "we just need to be able to do what we are doing tonight... [to] collaborate and communicate "
